The Group Stage of the 2026 World Cup were concluded in the early hours of yesterday with the eight best third placed teams emerging to join the group winners and runners up.

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana that finished second in Group A behind co-host Mexico opened their Round of 32 knockout fixture against Canada last night in Los Angeles.  This knockout fixtures are packed with all the  big names, dark horses and a couple of fairytale stories too. This first knockout matches will ultimately set the stage for the road to the New York New Jersey Stadium on 19 July when the final game of this 2026 edition will be played to determine the winner. Below are the 16 fixtures of this Round of 32.

Sunday, 28 June

South Africa v Canada (8pm)

This is uncharted territory for both nations, who have previously never reached the knockouts. Canada may have left home soil but expect plenty of fans to travel down to Los Angeles.

Monday, 29 June

Brazil v Japan (6pm)

The stars against the system. A fixture that just screams World Cup – the Selecao against the Samurai Blue. Much-fancied Japan beat the five-time champions 3-2 last October and – 20 years on – will look to avenge a 4-1 defeat in the 2006 group stage.

Germany v Paraguay (9pm)

Paraguay will face Die Mannschaft seeking revenge for a 1-0 defeat in the last 16 in 2002, with the prospect of facing France looming for the winner.

Tuesday, 30 June

Netherlands v Morocco (2am)

This could be the tie of the round. The Netherlands, predicted as tournament winners, against a Morocco side who reached the semi-finals four years ago and have since added sought-after 18-year-old wonderkid Ayyoub Bouaddi to their midfield.

Ivory Coast v Norway (6pm)

Unstoppable force meets immovable object. That’s Erling Haaland versus an Ivory Coast defence that did not concede in 10 qualifiers. The only guarantee here is Norway’s fans ‘Viking rowing’ their way into Dallas.

France v Sweden (10pm)

We all know about France’s abundance of riches in attack, but the other end of the pitch throws up the most intriguing battle – Viktor Gyokeres v Arsenal team-mate William Saliba. Which of these Premier League champions will come out on top?

Wednesday, 1 July

Mexico v Ecuador (2am)

Mexico at the Azteca is a spectacle worth the early start. And you can have a scouting report on England’s potential last-16 opponent written before breakfast.

England v DR Congo (5pm)

Talking of Thomas Tuchel’s side, it’s the Three Lions’ only family friendly kick-off of the tournament.

Belgium v Senegal (9pm)

Both sides left their best until last in the group stages. There are signs there just might be some sparkle left in Belgium’s golden generation, and while Senegal were officially the worst third-placed qualifier, they managed eight goals in their games against France, Norway and Iraq, and their off-field distractions appear behind them.

Thursday, 2 July

USA v Bosnia-Herzegovina (1am)

It might not quite be the 4th of July, but the co-hosts head to San Francisco Bay in bullish mood, despite the narrow loss to Turkey in their final dead-rubber group game. They face a Bosnia side who might have qualified at the expense of Italy in March, but failed to turn heads in the initial stage.

Spain v Austria (8pm)

Likely to be a clash of size and styles as fit-again Lamine Yamal and the European champions face a rather more direct Austria side who managed to sneak through in the dying seconds of their final game.

Friday, 3 July

Portugal v Croatia (12am)

The last dance? Surely we won’t see 40-year-old Luka Modric or 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo at another global tournament in four years’ time, so one of their World Cup careers is likely to end in the early hours of Friday morning.

Switzerland v Algeria (4am)

Thirteen World Cups, just four group stage exits. Switzerland just seem to always be there, but they are looking for a first knockout win in eight attempts against an Algeria side who possess a 20-year-old named Ibrahim Maza, a player so good he’s known as ‘Mazadona’.

Australia v Egypt (7pm)

Mohamed Salah’s quest for Egypt’s scoring record is a fascinating subplot, especially as the man he is chasing – Hossam Hassan – is his manager, who hauled him off 12 minutes into the second half of their last game when Salah was one short of his record.

Argentina v Capo Verde (11pm)

Six-goal Lionel Messi against 40-year-old Cape Verde stopper Vozinha might, on paper, look like the World Cup’s biggest mismatch, but the veteran keeper has already kept two clean sheets and become a national icon this summer.

Saturday, 4 July

Colombia v Ghana (2.30am)

The sights and sounds of a World Cup are always special, and this clash in Kansas City should work most of your senses. Colombia games have been a sight to behold so far, with their passionate fans packing out the stands in yellow and belting out the national anthem, and Ghana’s supporters are likely to give as good as they get too.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said in a statement yesterday that the decision underlined the team’s deliberate commitment to appointing a leader whose achievements, professionalism, and exemplary character embody the values of Nigerian sports.

Olopade emphasized that the selection was intentional and based on merit.

“We are intentional about the selection of our team captain. Duro Ikhazuagbe

World Record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, stormed to another sensation’s best world-class performance of 12.27 seconds to claim victory in the event at the Paris Diamond League.

On a day that things went well for Amusan, with the tailwind also legally at +0.7m/s, Tobi Expresss, as the petit Nigerian sprint hurdler is fondly called, stormed out of her lane four block with a reaction time of 0.135 seconds to lick the entire field.

American Grace Stark finished second in 12.38s, just ahead of compatriot Alaysha Johnson, who clocked 12.39s, while Dutch woman Visser improved on her heat performance to finish fourth in another season’s best of 12.41s.

According to the National Sports Commission, (NSC), Amusan’s victory represents another significant milestone in Amusan’s resurgence this season as the reigning Commonwealth champion continues to build momentum ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The victory also earned Amusan the maximum 21 Diamond League qualification points, moving her to the top of the qualification rankings after four of the eight qualifying meetings and strengthening her bid to reach the Diamond League Final.

Last week, Tobi Amusan was listed as one of Nigeria’s representatives to the 2026 Commonwealth Games taking places in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23rd – August 2nd.

She is expected to once again defend her 100mH crown which she won in Gold Coast, Australia and Birmingham, UK in 2018 and 2022 respectively.

South Africa’s remarkable FIFA World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday evening in Los Angeles after a spirited defensive display was undone by a dramatic stoppage-time strike from Stephen Eustaquio, handing Canada a 1-0 victory and a place in the Round of 16.

Having become one of Africa’s great stories by reaching the knockout stages for the first time, Hugo Broos’ side once again demonstrated the discipline that had defined their campaign.

Facing a Canadian side ranked significantly higher and buoyed by passionate home support in Los Angeles, Bafana Bafana absorbed sustained pressure for much of the contest but never lost belief.

Ronwen Williams produced another commanding display between the posts, while Khuliso Mudau, Siyabonga Mbokazi and Aubrey Modiba led a defence that repeatedly frustrated Canada’s attacking stars.

Canada dominated possession during the opening half but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against South Africa’s disciplined defensive block.

Nine out of the 10 African teams at the World Cup advanced to the second round in a major breakthrough for the continent’s football that could lead to bigger representation at future tournaments.

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana however lost 1-0 in stoppage-time  in their Round of 32 clash with co-host Canada in Los Angeles last night

The 90% success rate comes on the back of Morocco  reaching the semi-finals in Qatar four years ago and offers hope for the future of the game on a continent â€Œthat is soccer-mad but whose progress is often held back by administrative and logistical factors.

“It’s a source of great pride that there are so many African teams qualified for the Round of 32,” said Democratic Republic of Congo coach Sebastien Desabre after his side came from behind to earn a thrilling 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan and  secure their progress.

“For many years the African continent has been working hard and making progress,” said the Frenchman with some 15  years’ experience of working with both clubs and national teams in Africa.

“Sure, there is still room for improvement, and â we must ensure we try and remain humble but we are happy to be part of this progression of African football,” he said  after Saturday’s first World Cup win for the Congolese.

Tunisia’s  Carthage Eagles were the only African team that failed to make it past the first round at the finals, with Cape Verde, Egypt,  Ivory Coast, Morocco and South Africa finishing runners-up in their respective groups and Algeria, DR Congo, Ghana and Senegal all finishing among the eight best third-placed finishers.

“The global competitiveness and world-class quality of African football is being recognised and highlighted by the victories and qualification to the World Cup Round of 32, by each of  the nine African national teams,” said Confederation of African Football President Patrice Motsepe in a statement on Sunday.

“The hard work and investments in youth  football development, coaching, professional football leagues and football infrastructure in each of CAF’s 54 member associations and in the CAF competitions, is bearing fruit,” he added.

Africa will â€Œneed to â continue its trajectory at the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States if it is to successfully lobby for more places at future tournaments.

Nigeria’s Eniola Bolaji won a silver medal yesterday at the 2026 British & Irish Para Badminton International.

The Paralympic bronze and World championship silver medallist lost 2-0 (21-18, 23-21) to Japan’s Shino Kawai in the SL3 women’s singles final at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena in Dublin.

Bolaji enjoyed an impressive run to the final, recording wins over India’s Neeraj 2-0 (21-15, 21-3) and France’s Milena Surreau 2-0 (21-19, 21-13) during the group stage.

The multiple African champion continued her dominant form by defeating TĂŒrkiye’s Halime Yildiz 2-0 (21-16, 21-7) in the quarter-finals before cruising past Australia’s Celine Vinot 2-0 (21-7, 21-9) in the semi-finals.

An elated President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih, praised Eniola Bolaji for another outstanding performance on the international stage.

Orbih described her display in Dublin as fantastic and expressed confidence that the Nigerian star has what it takes to defeat Shino Kawai in future competitions.

He revealed that the federation is already working on plans to secure overseas training programme aimed at helping Bolaji close the gap with Shino who dethroned her as world number 1. Orbih said:

“It was a fantastic performance and I am very happy with what Eniola achieved. I am motivated to intensify efforts to ensure she trains outside the country because it is only a matter of time before she starts beating the Japanese player, Shino Kawai.

“I have congratulated her for setting the tone once again, and we are looking forward to arranging a three-month training tour abroad to further improve her game.”

Orbih also commended the support the federation received from the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA) while acknowledging the sponsorship of Yonex, and GIG Logistics toward the athlete’s development.

He expressed optimism that with sustained support and international exposure, Bolaji will continue to challenge for major titles ahead of future global competitions.

Nikola Vlasic scored a late header as Croatia booked their place in the World Cup last 32 with victory over already-qualified Ghana in Philadelphia.

Nikola Vlasic scored a late header as Croatia booked their place in the World Cup last 32 with victory over already-qualified Ghana in Philadelphia.

Zlatko Dalic’s side needed to avoid defeat against the Black Stars to be sure of a place in the knockout stages, but Vlasic’s effort seven minutes from time ensured they qualified as runners-up to England – who beat Panama in Group L’s other game.

Ghana defender Derrick Luckassen had cancelled out Petar Sucic’s stunning first-half opener in the 73rd minute, but the Black Stars were unable to hold on for a point and will now head into the last 32 as one of the best third-placed sides.

Croatia’s victory also ended Scotland’s faint hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Finalists in 2018 and semi-finalists four years later, Croatia carried the greater threat in the first half and went close to taking the lead on 17 minutes, when Vlasic’s long-range drive grazed the outside of goalkeeper Benjamin Asare’s right-hand post.

But Dalic’s team took a richly deserved lead when Inter Milan midfielder Sucic collected Mateo Kovacic’s pass before arrowing a low, right-footed drive through Luckassen’s legs and into the bottom corner.

Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo dragged a low shot narrowly wide of the far post late in the first half, but it would have been a scarcely deserved equaliser for Carlos Quieroz’s side, who failed to muster a first-half shot on target for the third game in succession.

However, the Black Stars appeared revitalised by the half-time introduction of Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu, who flashed a powerful shot narrowly over the bar early in the second half.

Ghana were rewarded for their improved second-half showing when Luckassen headed home Ernest Nuamah’s delivery – a goal which was awarded by the video assistant referee following a near four-minute check for offside.

Kwasi Sibo was in an offside position from Nuamah’s cross, but on-field official Drew Fischer eventually informed the crowd that the Ghana number eight was not interfering with play when the cross was struck and gave the goal.

The momentum appeared to be with Ghana as the game entered the final 10 minutes, but Vlasic nodded home Luka Modric’s delivery to earn Croatia their second Group L victory.

Bellingham Inspires England to Top Group L /2026/06/28/bellingham-inspires-england-to-top-group-l/ /2026/06/28/bellingham-inspires-england-to-top-group-l/#respond Sun, 28 Jun 2026 00:48:00 +0000 /?p=1220134

‱ Kane now Three Lions all-time Mundial goalscorer

Harry Kane became England’s all-time World Cup goalscorer but it was Jude Bellingham who inspired Thomas Tuchel’s side to top spot in Group L as he grabbed a goal and an assist to secure a 2-0 victory over Panama.

After a sluggish first half at MetLife Stadium, in which Panama caused England plenty of problems on the counter-attack, Bellingham took control of the game and proved to be the difference maker as he broke the deadlock with a smart finish (62) before teeing up Harry Kane (67) as he went out on his own as the Three Lions’ leading scorer at World Cups.

Bellingham’s performance impressed Sky Sports’ Gary Neville. “Bellingham is an absolute superstar and our best player in this game by a mile,” Neville said on ITV. “He is the one player who looks in-form, he looks fresh, he’s sharp and playing at the level you would expect.

While England, who were already guaranteed of a place in the knockout phase following Friday’s fixtures, dominated the ball in the first half, they struggled in the final third. With Croatia leading Ghana 1-0 and heading for top spot in the group, the pressure was on for Tuchel’s side to deliver after the break.

Not for the first time in his England career, it was Bellingham who delivered, poking home Bukayo Saka’s corner to find the breakthrough that was so desperately needed.

Bellingham then turned provider five minutes later as Kane headed home his inch perfect cross for his 11th World Cup goal to break Gary Lineker’s long-standing record as England sealed top spot to set what looks like a potential last-32 showdown with Senegal or DR Congo.

A 1-1 draw against IR Iran was enough to secure a place in the knockout stage for the first time in Egypt’s history

The milestone was achieved through determination, driven by a united group and their coach, Hossam Hassan, who has been widely praised by the Egyptian public.

Hassan, reflecting on a historic night in Seattle, said “We’re proud to have gone unbeaten in the group stage, even though it was tough, as I’ve said since the beginning. It’s an honour to progress to the next round. I’d like to thank my players because they’ve brought immense joy to our fans.

“We’re ready to face anyone,” added the coach. “We’re capable of playing our brand of football and adapting while respecting every opponent. We won’t fear anyone. The World Cup is a unique competition and, of course, we’ll have to take on strong sides. We’re prepared for every scenario. Anything is possible in football.”

One of the heroes behind the achievement, who brilliantly saved a first-half penalty from Mehdi Taremi spoke to FIFA. “This is a dream for us,” he explained. “We’re so grateful to have qualified. It was such a tough game, but we knew how difficult this group would be. All our matches have been tricky so far. What matters is that we’ve got through, which is what we wanted. We know we’ve made history, so we’re very proud. It’s an incredible feeling which is hard to put into words.”

The goal to break the deadlock was tucked home by Mahmoud Saber, who cut an emotional yet focused figure after the game in Seattle as he turned his attention to the upcoming showdown with Australia. “I feel so proud to be here at the World Cup on the biggest stage in football,” he explained.

“We’ve picked up a significant result tonight and are thrilled to be through to the knockout stage, knowing we’ve made every Egypt fan happy. It’s a real privilege to have scored at the World Cup. Now we’ll study Australia closely and try to be ready to face them.”

Yusuf  Retains Prime Atlantic Squash Double Crown /2026/06/28/yusuf-retains-prime-atlantic-squash-double-crown/ /2026/06/28/yusuf-retains-prime-atlantic-squash-double-crown/#respond Sun, 28 Jun 2026 00:40:00 +0000 /?p=1220125

Quadri Yusuf successfully defended his titles in the Under-19 and Senior Men’s categories of the Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament, overcoming Giwa in two gripping five-set finals to complete a remarkable double for the second consecutive year.

Yusuf defeated Giwa 3-2 in both the U-19 and Senior Men’s finals, replicating the feat he achieved during the 2025 edition of the tournament.

In the women’s U-19 final, Loveth Balogun edged Zainab Ishola 3-2 in a closely contested encounter, while defending champion Rofiat Abdulazeez maintained her dominance in the Senior Women’s category with a convincing 3-0 victory over Misturah Durosinlorun.

Speaking after his triumph, Yusuf described the victories as special, noting that defending both titles was more difficult than winning them for the first time.

“I’m very happy to win both categories again. It shows that the hard work and sacrifices throughout the year have paid off. “Winning once can be difficult, but defending the titles is even harder because everyone wants to beat you.

Giwa pushed me to my limits in both finals and I had to stay focused from beginning to end.

“What makes this victory more satisfying is seeing how much we have all improved.

“The level of squash keeps rising every year and that is good for the sport in Nigeria,” he said.

Reflecting on his rivalry with Giwa, Yusuf said both players had matured significantly since their fierce battles at the 2025 edition.

“Last year was like a battlefield. We were younger and more emotional. This year, we showed more maturity, respect and composure on the court.

“We both understand the game better now. We fought hard for every point, but we remained professional throughout. I think that is a positive sign for Nigerian squash,” Yusuf added.

A disappointed but gracious Giwa acknowledged Yusuf’s superiority on the day while expressing determination to return stronger.

“It hurts to lose both finals after coming so close. I gave everything I had and unfortunately it was not enough.

“However, I will take the positives from this experience. Playing in two finals has shown me that I am improving and I believe my time will come. I congratulate Yusuf and I will continue working hard,” Giwa said.

Abdulazeez, who successfully retained her Senior Women’s title, said consistency and discipline were key factors behind her victory.

“I am delighted to defend my title. Every tournament comes with pressure, especially when you are the defending champion.

“I stayed focused on my game plan and tried not to underestimate any opponent. Winning this title again means a lot to me and motivates me to keep improving.

“I also want to commend the organisers and sponsors for creating a platform that allows players to showcase their talents,” she said.

Earlier, Group Managing Director of Prime Atlantic, Ayo Otuyalo, represented by Tobiloba Ariyo, the Marketing, Corporate and Marketing Manager described the tournament as highly competitive, noting that its standard continued to improve annually.

“The quality of matches we have witnessed this year has been exceptional. Every edition of the tournament seems to surpass the previous one.

“We are proud to support a competition that continues to discover talents, develop players and contribute to the growth of squash in Nigeria.

“The level of competitiveness and sportsmanship displayed throughout the tournament gives us confidence that the future of Nigerian squash is bright,” Otuyalo said.

Also speaking, Tomi Falase, the Chairman Lagos State Squash Association commended the players, coaches, referees and sponsors for their contributions to the success of the championship.

“The sponsor have just told me that the fifth edition will be bigger and better because of how impressed he is.

“The same boys that were star performer in 2023, and the star on senior men today that shows growth.

“I must applaud all the players for their dedication and excellent performances throughout the tournament.

“The coaches deserve recognition for their efforts in developing these athletes, while the referees ensured fair play and professionalism.

“We are also grateful to Prime Atlantic for its unwavering support. Their commitment has been instrumental in making this tournament one of the most important squash competitions in the country,” Falase said.

The tournament once again highlighted the growing depth of talent in Nigerian squash, with many observers noting the remarkable maturity displayed by young players during the competition.

Unlike the intense and emotionally charged rivalry witnessed in 2025, this year’s encounters between Yusuf and Giwa reflected significant growth in character, composure and tactical awareness, underlining the steady development of the country’s next generation of squash stars.

South-East Basketball Getting New Life with Court, Championships /2026/06/28/south-east-basketball-getting-new-life-with-court-championships/ /2026/06/28/south-east-basketball-getting-new-life-with-court-championships/#respond Sun, 28 Jun 2026 00:28:00 +0000 /?p=1220116

Basketball in the South East has continued to show growth and development with every passing month in the last few years.

It was indeed a full weekend of activities from June 5 to 7, 2026, for many young basketballers scattered across the South East region of Nigeria. There is something ironic about this part of the country when it comes to the game of basketball.

At best, the East had always served as a good scouting place for players, but without major clubs and events, the outlook is changing with visible programmes that have aligned them with the other sections of the country.

Ugo Udezue, who represents the region on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, is pushing hard to create activities that can produce young players and truly qualified coaches over the years. Udezue returned from the USA to set up the African Basketball League, which successfully ran on the continent. The ABL, later known as the Continental Basketball League, is truly the blueprint for whatever league is being played on the continent currently. The idea was to give the Africa-based professional basketballers greater opportunities.

The drive now is to give the South East a breath of life.

Through the weekend of June 5, Ebonyi State took a significant step in its sports development drive as it hosted the maiden South-East Regional Basketball Championship, hailed as a landmark event for youth empowerment and talent discovery. One of the major highlights of this basketball fiesta is the commissioning of a new basketball court built and donated by Ugo Udezue.

Speaking at the event on behalf of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Richard Idike, said the competition marked the first time Ebonyi was hosting a regional basketball tournament of such magnitude.

A major highlight of the event was the commissioning of the newly constructed Hon. Richard Idike Basketball Court.

Idike praised the NBBF President, Engr. Musa Kida for his contributions to the development of the game in Nigeria, and also commended the South-East representative on the NBBF board, Udezue, for his role in bringing the tournament and the new basketball facility to fruition.

He noted that, “The championship goes beyond competition, providing a platform for regional integration, friendship, and the discovery of future stars capable of representing Nigeria.

Coach Kingsley Auchu (popularly known as Coach Saucer) believes a good court is what the young players in the Abakaliki area lack.

“This is a welcome development. For a very long time, we didn’t have anything (the basketball court) like this. This is very good for our programmes, and this should help us go global.”

But even as the people of Ebonyi celebrate growth coming with facilities, training schedules, and Enugu eventually hosting the NBBF’s Men’s Premier League, not everyone agrees that the new court or programmes would make any impact in the lives of the locals.

“Which impact, which new court?” Victor Okoro, the Abia State Basketball Association Chairman and a member of the national board, queries.

“I don’t think this thing can make any impact. I have been reading about a new court in Abakaliki, but I don’t know where this court is. There’s no new court; it is propaganda. What he (Ugo Udezue) did was to paint a portion of the old extended car park at the shopping complex. He only renovated the place.”

Okoro, who admitted that he had not personally seen the court, said he believed the reports he got.

“People from there called me to inform me of what was going on.

“My concern is getting the President (Musa Kida of the NBBF) deceived that you have built a real court and mixing his name with this kind of thing.”

And not far away from Abia, just across to Imo State, a former Chairman of the state’s basketball association, Kelechi Anosike, spoke about the new court.

He said, “There’s no new court in Abakaliki.”

He promised to send evidence the following day that the court was not a new one but he is yet to do so.

Based on the statements of Okoro and Anosike, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Sports, Idike, was asked to clarify the status of the court.

“I am not surprised that somebody would say such negative things about this project. Some people are just on standby to run down anything associated with the government or anything done that helps in the government’s drive towards sustainable development.

“Anyone saying it is not a new court is deliberately being mischievous. What do you need to build a court that makes it look like an impossible task?

“For this project, we got a place secured, and that was how the project began from scratch.”

The commissioner then made a plea for other persons who are willing to partner with the government for sustainable developments.

Coach Nwoyechi works with the Enugu State Sports Commission as a basketball coach. He expressed his shock at Anosike’s statement.

He said, “I went to Ebonyi State with Ugo, and so I know about the project from Day One. This court was built on a space. We started work from scratch.

“I am not saying this to please Ugo. He made a huge sacrifice using personal funds, and I have an idea how much this thing cost. It was completely funded by Ugo.

“Anosike knows he is not telling the truth.”

He also spoke about the recently concluded tournament.

“Again, Ugo funded this competition completely. Some of the cash sent to the participants passed through me, and so I can talk about this event in terms of organization and financing.”

The second phase of the NBBF’s Men’s Premier League is ongoing in Enugu. This is quite rare in Nigerian basketball. This flagship competition of the federation had never been held in the South East region in decades. Udezue, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of AFA Sports, says he remains resolute on making an impact in that region.

He says, “I understand that if you don’t have naysayers, you’re probably not doing something right.

“Our focus remains on basketball development, youth empowerment, and infrastructure across the Southeast. We are proud of the progress being made in Ebonyi, through Coal City Blazers, and through other initiatives that are creating opportunities for the next generation.

“We will remain focused on the work and leave the commentary to others.

“My thanks to Honorable Idike for his support throughout the process, and I also want to give thanks to the NBBF President, Engr. Musa Kida for his steadfast encouragement.”

Maduka Okoye: Beautiful Bride Turin Bound? /2026/06/27/maduka-okoye-beautiful-bride-turin-bound/ /2026/06/27/maduka-okoye-beautiful-bride-turin-bound/#respond Sat, 27 Jun 2026 03:49:41 +0000 /?p=1219677

Ialian Serie A giants, Juventus have been linked with a move for Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye and Udinese have reportedly informed the Old Lady that they will only consider selling the Nigerian goalkeeper  for a fee in the region of €15 million this summer.

Juventus are currently in the market for a new goalkeeper and have identified the Super Eagles shot-stopper as one of their top transfer targets ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The Turin giants had initially focused their attention on Aston Villa and Argentina international, Emiliano MartĂnez. However, difficulties surrounding a potential deal for the World Cup-winning goalkeeper have prompted Juventus to explore alternative options, with Okoye emerging as a serious candidate.

Okoye’s performances have not gone unnoticed, attracting interest from several clubs across Europe. Juventus are believed to be among the most determined suitors as they seek to strengthen their squad ahead of another title challenge and their return to European competition.

According to reports from Italian media outlets, Udinese value Okoye highly and are reluctant to let him leave cheaply.

The club has therefore placed a €15 million valuation on the former Sparta Rotterdam and Watford goalkeeper, a figure comparable to the amount Juventus are reportedly willing to spend on Martínez.

The 26-year-old shot-stopper is coming off an impressive campaign with Udinese, having played a pivotal role in leading the club to a 10th-place finish in the Italian top flight.

Okoye kept 10 clean sheets in 30 Serie A appearances, often producing moments of sheer brilliance to keep his side competitive.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, as former league champions Juventus are keen to secure his services on a permanent deal. As they look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming campaign, Okoye has emerged as a primary target.

The Nigerian international is currently valued at €9 million by Transfermarkt and has two years remaining on his contract.

Udinese have a reputation as a selling club and would likely be open to negotiations should a suitable offer arrive. In anticipation of a potential exit, they have already identified a replacement.

According to Sleeper Football News, the

Kosta Runjaic’s side have identified Bologna goalkeeper, Federico Ravaglia as the ideal candidate to replace Okoye.

The 26-year-old developed through the Bologna academy but spent significant time on loan at various clubs, including SĂŒdtirol, Reggina, Gubbio, and Frosinone.

Despite his experience, he has yet to establish himself as a guaranteed starter. It remains to be seen whether he would be an effective replacement for Okoye, who has been outstanding for Udinese over the past two years.

Okoye’s stellar club form has also seen him solidify his position as the undisputed number one goalkeeper for the Nigerian national team.

It will be interesting to see how this transfer saga unfolds, as both Ravaglia and Okoye should have clarity regarding their futures in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Okoye has addressed talks about his future at Udinese amidst other interest from top clubs in Germany, England, and France.

Okoye’s performance at the club level, coupled with his displays in Nigeria’s friendlies against Poland and Portugal, just before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has put him on the radar of top clubs.

The Germany-born Nigerian has a contract with the Bianconeri that runs till the summer of 2028, and clarified that he’s focused is on his task with Udinese.

“I am really very happy at Udinese, and I really appreciate the association, all the employees, the beautiful city that has become my second home, and the people very much,” the former Watford goalkeeper said in an interview with Transfermarkt.

“Also, the peace and routine I found here. Of course, I still have goals in my career, but currently my head is complete at Udinese.

“I enjoy it without thinking too much about the future. In football, things can change quickly, and if it happens, I know that the club is well positioned, and I can still earn him a nice replacement.

“But until then, I’m 100 percent Udinese professional.”

According to the report, the agent of the 21-cap Super Eagles goalie has been contacted by clubs from all the top four leagues, including the Bundesliga, and top teams from the Turkish SĂŒper Lig, but Okoye isn’t flattered.

“It is a good push for me as a person to know that you are in demand and that one or the other club is on the list.

“However, I leave this to my advisors, where I am in outstanding hands with Gabriele Giuffrida and Co. That’s their part, and I have absolute confidence in their work,” the former DĂŒsseldorf goalie concluded.

Despite Nigeria not qualifying for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, the team’s goalkeeper, Okoye has become an overnight internet sensation after going viral for his smouldering good looks.

Standing tall at 1.9 metres (6ft 6 inches), Okoye caught the attention of the internet while playing a pre-World Cup friendly against Portugal earlier this month. His prematch walk in particular was clipped and shared online, garnering millions of views and earning him the label of “the sexiest footballer in the world”.

The 26-year-old player’s follower count on Instagram also climbed up to an impressive 1.3 million. “Honestly, I think I was not prepared for this because it was quite big. I have had some viral moments here and there, but nothing like this,” Okoye said in an interview with social media journalist Joy Ejaria via Ahlan Dubai about his new-found fame.

Okoye was born in August 1999, in Germany to a Nigerian father and German mother. The young footballer honed his talent on the pitch in Germany before joining the Dutch professional football team Sparta Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where he was voted player of the season in 2020-2021, per Life After Football.

In 2023, Okoye joined Udinese Calcio, where he has been ever since. In 2025, Okoye was suspended from the sport for two months after he was investigated for match-fixing during a game against Lazio, a professional sports club, in 2024.

Given his good looks, Okoye is no stranger to receiving attention from women. “My priorities are somewhere else than being a fine boy. As a professional, you have to keep these things aside. You cannot combine sports with too much womanising,” he said. “It has always been a part of me because women have always been a little bit crazy about me. But I don’t really pay too much attention.”

Okoye keeps a low profile and has shared little about his private life. He was last linked to Jelicia Westhoff, a Dutch model, with whom he shares a son.

However, it’s unclear whether the pair are still together.

With the summer transfer window now gathering momentum, it remains to be seen whether Juventus and other suitors will meet Udinese’s asking price  for Okoye.

in Africa’s Youngest World Cup Starters Ranking

Ibrahim Mbaye, who was named in Senegal’s starting XI for their ongoing clash with Iraq, has joined an exclusive group of African footballers to have started a FIFA World Cup match aged 18 or younger — a prestigious list that notably features two Nigerian forwards.

According to Opta statistics, the PSG starlet has been listed among the youngest African players to start a FIFA World Cup match, placing his name alongside several historic teenage debutants from the continent.

However, Nigeria’s contribution to this elite list remains highly significant, with Femi Opabunmi and Bartholomew Ogbeche both occupying standout positions in World Cup history.

Opabunmi remains the youngest African player to start a World Cup match, having featured at just 17 years and 101 days old.

The former Nigeria international made his appearance at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, etching his name into the record books as one of the tournament’s most remarkable teenage starters. In third place is compatriot Ogbeche, who also represented Nigeria at the 2002 edition of the competition.

The forward started a World Cup match at 17 years and 244 days, further reinforcing Nigeria’s reputation for producing exceptional young talents capable of performing on football’s biggest stage.

Cameroon’s Salomon OlembĂ© and Rigobert Song also feature in the list, highlighting Africa’s rich history of youthful participation at the global tournament.

Senegal Pummel Iraq 5-0 to Boost Round of 32 Ticket /2026/06/27/senegal-pummel-iraq-5-0-to-boost-round-of-32-ticket/ /2026/06/27/senegal-pummel-iraq-5-0-to-boost-round-of-32-ticket/#respond Sat, 27 Jun 2026 03:46:50 +0000 /?p=1219683

Senegal boosted their chances of reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup with a 5-0 victory against 10-man Iraq.

The Lions of Teranga finished third in Group I with three points to climb to fifth among third-placed teams, but they will still need results elsewhere to go their way to secure a place in the last 32.

Senegal played a near-perfect game in Toronto as they looked to bounce back from defeats by France and Norway, and the result pushed Scotland down to ninth in the table of third-placed sides – with eight to advance to the next round.

Fast-starting Senegal opened the scoring after only four minutes. Abdoulaye Seck’s header from a corner took a decisive deflection off Sunderland midfielder Habib Diarra on its way past Iraq goalkeeper Ahmed Basil.

Iraq’s problems were compounded nine minutes later when referee Anthony Taylor sent off defender Rebin Sulaka for pulling down Sadio Mane at the edge of the penalty area – deeming it denial of a goalscoring opportunity after a video assistant referee review.

Mane tested Basil from the resulting free-kick, but Pape Thiaw’s side, who needed goals to improve their goal difference and thereby their chances of progressing to the next stage, failed to register another shot on target in the first half.

But they capitalised on former Manchester United midfielder Zidane Iqbal giving away possession at the edge of the box as Lamine Camara cut the ball back for Ismaila Sarr to apply a simple finish to make it 2-0 in the 56th minute.

Their lead was extended three minutes later as Pape Gueye curled a left-foot strike into the top corner – his first involvement after coming on moments earlier.

Villarreal defensive midfielder Gueye added his second goal with another thunderous effort in the 71st minute before fellow substitute Iliman Ndiaye sealed the 5-0 win, that they would hope will be enough to send them through to the knockout stage.

Dembele’s Hat-trick Sees France Defeat Norway’s  Reserves /2026/06/27/dembeles-hat-trick-sees-france-defeat-norways-reserves/ /2026/06/27/dembeles-hat-trick-sees-france-defeat-norways-reserves/#respond Sat, 27 Jun 2026 03:43:47 +0000 /?p=1219667

Ousmane Dembele scored a superb hat-trick in 32 minutes as France defeated a rotated Norway side to finish top of Group I at the 2026 World Cup.

Pre-match hopes that this game would be an epic showdown between Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe were quashed by the arrival of the teamsheets.

Norway manager Stale Solbakken made 10 changes after two group victories, including resting Manchester City forward Haaland, who has four goals in the tournament along with Mbappe.

But into the narrative void stepped Dembele, who delivered the second-fastest men’s World Cup hat-trick ever with three goals of the purest quality.

It was the first time a player had scored three goals in the opening half of a match in the tournament since Russia’s Oleg Salenko against Cameroon in 1994.

And it was the second-quickest World Cup hat-trick ever from the start of a match, behind Erich Probst’s 24-minute treble in 1954 for Austria against Czechoslovakia.

France were led by assistant coach Guy Stephan, with boss Didier Deschamps having returned home following the death of his mother.

They completely dominated the early stages and deservedly broke through in the seventh minute. Having won the ball in Norway’s half, Mbappe spread it wide right to Dembele in space. The Ballon d’Or winner squared up his marker and slammed home past Egil Selvik.

It was 2-0 in the 20th minute when Dembele completed a lightning counter-attack by cutting off the right-hand side on to his wizardly left foot and whipped a curling shot into the far corner.

Norway struck back within 79 seconds, the French defence declining to respond to an attack straight from the kick-off which ended in Rangers attacker Thelo Aasgaard sweeping the ball past a wrong-footed Mike Maignan.

But Dembele was far from done, as he moved himself into contention as the tournament’s top scorer with his fourth goal.

Again he cut on to his left foot and, with four surrounding defenders paralysed by fear, curled another effort past Norway reserve keeper Selvik.

Strand Larsen had a poor penalty saved at the start of the second half, after Oscar Bobb was brought down by Theo Hernandez, while Bobb himself also had an effort stopped by France keeper Maignan when found unmarked in the box.

Dembele was subbed off after 65 minutes as the tempo dropped after the break, but his Paris St-Germain team-mate Desire Doue stepped up to add a fourth in the 94th minute with a looping header.

Chief Suo: The Literary Architect of Pidgin Sports Commentary /2026/06/27/chief-suo-the-literary-architect-of-pidgin-sports-commentary/ /2026/06/27/chief-suo-the-literary-architect-of-pidgin-sports-commentary/#respond Sat, 27 Jun 2026 03:42:27 +0000 /?p=1219666

To understand why Chief Suo Chapele’s commentary is such an unmatched vibe, one must look beyond her electric delivery to her unique English and Literature background. She does not merely translate the game; she deconstructs it.

Where standard commentary relies on clinical, dry analysis, Chief Suo Chapele uses her literary foundation to treat the pitch as an open page with endless possibilities. Her training allows her to spot the hidden subtexts of a match; the quiet psychological warfare between a striker and a goalkeeper, or the structural irony of a defensive team suddenly caught on the counter-attack.

She applies classic narrative arcs to 90 minutes plus of football, building suspense during midfield stalemates and delivering explosive climaxes when the net bulges. By pairing rigorous tactical evaluations with spontaneous, poetic outbursts, she elevates everyday Warri pidgin, with a healthy nod to Nigeria’s vast spread of local dialects into a structured, premium broadcast language.

“No Be Juju Be That? Kpoko!!!”-  Inside the Commentary Box.

To truly appreciate the Chief Suo Chapele phenomenon is to hear her process the frantic action of a high-stakes World Cup match in real-time. Here is how she breaks down the tactical chaos into instant, viral gold:

On a Masterful Midfield Playmaker: “Okpo Oyibo go say dis one na telepathic sorcery! Baba  just thread that ball through needle eye, no be juju be that?”

On a Stumbling Defender Caught Out of Position: “Dem don lost defender for supermarket! He still dey look for price tag when striker don already collect change, pack luggage, run comot, omoshor!”

On a Shock, Last-Minute Winning Goal: “Pressure don finally burst pipe ayakata! The stadium don scatter! This one na premium, undiluted, calculation-defying football! Tear your ticket, the show don finish!”

On a Striker Missing an Open Goal: “Ah! Bros how far na? You dey look ball, ball dey look you, you come send the maka why?!”

Why She Stands Out in 2026

While other native-language commentators excel within their specific regional borders, Chief Suo Chapele’s pidgin acts as the ultimate linguistic bridge. It is accessible to the professor in Lagos, the casual viewer in Accra, and the diaspora fan in London.

By blending high-level tactical insight with hilarious, unscripted analogies, she has successfully demystified football tactics. She has made the sport exceptionally welcoming to a massive wave of new (female) viewers who tune in as much for her magnetic personality as they do for the action on the pitch. In a tournament of spectacular goals, Chapele’s remains Africa’s finest highlight.

Eze Cleaqes Launches Digital Sports Platform to Connect African Talent with Global Opportunities /2026/06/27/eze-cleaqes-launches-digital-sports-platform-to-connect-african-talent-with-global-opportunities/ /2026/06/27/eze-cleaqes-launches-digital-sports-platform-to-connect-african-talent-with-global-opportunities/#respond Sat, 27 Jun 2026 03:38:59 +0000 /?p=1219653

As Africa’s digital economy continues to expand, technology-driven platform, Cleaqes, has unveiled Cleaqes Sports, a new digital initiative designed to identify, showcase and connect grassroots sporting talents across Africa and the Caribbean with global opportunities.

Speaking at the launch, Head of Marketing at Cleaqes, Charity Owoh, described the company as more than just a platform, noting that it is a technology ecosystem created to connect Africa and the Caribbean with the rest of the world.

According to her, the growing global interest in African culture, business, tourism, entertainment and sports presents enormous opportunities for the continent, and Cleaqes is positioning itself as a bridge between local communities and the global diaspora.

“Cleaqes is more than a platform; it is a technology that connects Africa and the Caribbean to the world. The diaspora space is huge, and many people want to engage with African culture and know what is happening across the continent. Our goal is to showcase talents, businesses, creators, organisers and opportunities through technology,” she said.

Owoh explained that the company operates through several digital pillars, including Cleaqes Stories, Cleaqes Tourism, Cleaqes Events, Afro-rated Podcast and the newly launched Cleaqes Sports.

She noted that the tourism platform serves as a digital marketplace where users can discover destinations, book travel experiences, access trusted service providers and explore unique attractions across Africa and the Caribbean.

According to her, the platform addresses one of the biggest challenges faced by travellers and consumers—access to reliable and verified vendors.

“We are bringing users and trusted vendors together, making it easier for people to find authentic experiences across Africa. There are still many hidden gems that people have not discovered, and technology can help unlock those opportunities,” she stated.

She further highlighted the company’s events discovery platform, which enables event organisers to promote events, sell tickets and stream activities to audiences across the world.

Using comedy shows and entertainment events as examples, Owoh explained that creators can expand their audience beyond physical venues by leveraging Cleaqes’ live-streaming technology.

“Someone outside Nigeria may not be able to attend an event physically, but through our platform they can watch it live. This creates additional revenue streams for creators while helping them reach a broader audience,” she added.

Beyond tourism and events, Cleaqes also operates Afro-rated Podcast, a media platform dedicated to telling African stories and engaging members of the diaspora on issues affecting the continent.

However, the company believes sports presents one of the greatest opportunities for Africa’s youth population.

Product Manager for Cleaqes, Aisha Oladunjoye, said the new platform was created to identify talented athletes from grassroots communities and provide them with the visibility required to attract international opportunities.

According to her, the initiative will initially focus on football while building a digital archive of emerging talents from streets, school fields and local communities.

“This is a technology platform built to help local talents gain exposure and visibility before a global audience. We are starting with football because we recognise that there are countless gifted young people whose talents remain unseen simply because they are not attached to major clubs or academies,” she said.

Oladunjoye  stressed that technology provides the scale required to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity.

“Technology can go where our legs cannot and where our voices cannot. Through this digital platform, we can place local talents in front of global scouts, clubs and opportunities,” she explained.

She added that although the platform is still in its foundational stage and has not yet entered formal partnerships with schools and universities, awareness campaigns will target students and young athletes across communities.

According to her, Cleaqes Sports plans to deploy aggressive digital marketing campaigns while also engaging directly with local communities to identify promising talents.

“Our objective is to make enough noise through every available digital channel and physical outreach. We want young people to know that their dreams are valid and that their sporting abilities can become global careers,” she said.

One of the unique features of the platform, she explained, is its ability to document athletes’ growth journeys over time.

“When we eventually produce another Messi or Ronaldo, people will be able to return to the platform and track that athlete’s development from the beginning. The platform becomes a record of their journey and progress,” she noted.

As part of its international expansion strategy, Cleaqes Sports is exploring opportunities for African athletes to participate in the Prime Minister’s Cup in Barbados, a move expected to provide exposure to international competition and scouting networks.

The company is also seeking strategic partnerships with stakeholders, including airline operators, to facilitate mobility between Africa and the Caribbean. In particular, it is exploring potential collaboration with Air Peace following the airline’s direct route connecting Nigeria and Barbados.

In addition, Cleaqes Sports announced plans to participate in the upcoming Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) Summit 2026 in Lagos, where it hopes to engage investors, sports organisations, governments, brands and media institutions.

The company said its long-term vision is to build Africa’s leading digital sports ecosystem, leveraging technology to transform grassroots athletes into globally recognised champions while positioning African sports as a major force within the international marketplace.

From a Hospitality Suite to a Historic World Cup Moment: Four Decades After My International Career Began, Football

Opened Another Door and I Found Myself Honored as a FIFA Legend

By Paul Lucky Okoku

When a community chooses to honor its sporting pioneers, it is not celebrating the past—it is investing in the future.

The Badge That Means More Than Football

During FIFA World Cup 2026 activities in Atlanta, I experienced something that caused me to pause and reflect.

It was not the match.

It was not the VIP access.

It was not even the opportunity to stand alongside fellow footballers from different parts of the world.

It was the realization that decades after our playing careers, FIFA still remembers.

That recognition matters.

In football, FIFA sits at the highest level of the game. Players may represent clubs, leagues, regions, youth national teams, Olympic teams, or senior national teams. Yet every footballer understands that FIFA represents the pinnacle of international football.

That is why the FIFA Legends designation carries special meaning.

It is bigger than a club.

It is bigger than a league.

It is bigger than an individual achievement.

It is global.

WHEN FOOTBALL REMEMBERS, FIFA RESPONDS

One aspect of this experience deserves special reflection.

The title ‘FIFA Legend’ was not something we chose for ourselves.

It was not a nickname.

It was not a personal branding exercise.

Throughout the FIFA World Cup 2026 activities connected to East Point’s hospitality and engagement program, participants were consistently introduced, credentialed, recognized, and celebrated as FIFA Legends.

Everywhere we went, we heard the same words: FIFA Legends.

At hotels.

At receptions.

At transportation pickups.

At hospitality events.

At media engagements.

For me, the significance was not the title itself.

The significance was the realization that more than four decades after my international career began, football still remembered.

And when football remembered, FIFA responded.

That last line is powerful because it becomes the takeaway:

Football remembered. FIFA responded.

East Point Did More Than Host an Event

The City of East Point, in the Greater Atlanta area of Georgia, deserves enormous credit.

This was not simply a hospitality exercise.

It was intentional.

Under the leadership of Chantel Ross-Francois, President and CEO of the East Point Convention & Visitors Bureau, East Point brought together football legends, civic leaders, entrepreneurs, tourism officials, and community stakeholders in a celebration of football’s power to connect people.

Throughout the week, visiting FIFA Legends were provided hospitality, transportation, access to World Cup activities, media exposure, and opportunities to engage with local leaders and residents.

The professionalism was evident.

The passion was genuine.

The appreciation was sincere.

Most importantly, East Point demonstrated how a local community can leverage the world’s biggest sporting event to create meaningful connections that extend far beyond football.

A Distinguished International Gathering

The delegation reflected football’s international character.

Representatives included former players and football professionals connected to Nigeria, South Africa, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Jamaica, and the United States.

Among those participating were former Trinidad & Tobago captain and World Cup veteran Stern John, South African football legend Lance Davids, former Super Falcons goalkeeper Judith Chime, Caribbean football ambassadors, civic leaders, entrepreneurs, and community advocates.

Football may have brought us together, but conversations quickly expanded to leadership, youth development, education, tourism, culture, and community impact.

That is one of football’s greatest strengths.

The game often becomes a bridge to something larger.

Watching a World Cup Match for the First Time

One of the highlights of the week was attending the FIFA World Cup match between South Africa and Czechia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta.

Despite representing Nigeria internationally and participating in FIFA competitions as a player, I had never previously attended a FIFA World Cup match as a spectator.

This was my first.

The atmosphere was electric.

The organization was exceptional.

The global nature of the event was unmistakable.

Watching supporters from different countries gather under one roof reminded me why football remains the world’s game.

A Match That Refused to End Quietly

Czechia appeared destined for victory.

Disciplined.

Organized.

Efficient.

They took the lead and controlled significant portions of the contest.

But football rarely follows a script.

As the match entered its closing stages, South Africa found the equalizer that transformed disappointment into celebration.

From the FIFA Legends Suite, the reaction was immediate.

The crowd erupted.

The stadium came alive.

A draw had suddenly become a victory of spirit.

The result may have been recorded as 1-1.

The emotion felt much bigger.

“Take Me Home”: The Song That United an Entire Stadium*

Long after the final whistle, another unforgettable moment remained.

The familiar lyrics of John Denver’s classic anthem, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” drifted across Mercedes-Benz Stadium and transformed thousands of strangers into one choir.

Then something remarkable happened.

Thousands began singing together.

Americans.

South Africans.

Visitors from around the world.

For a few precious moments, there were no strangers.

There were no language barriers.

There was only one voice.

As a first-time FIFA World Cup attendee, I found myself singing along with everyone else.

The scoreline will be remembered.

But the sound of an entire stadium singing together is what I will never forget.

That was the moment when my first World Cup truly felt like a World Cup.

Why I Wanted South Africa to Win

I am aware of the difficult conversations surrounding xenophobic attacks that have affected fellow Africans in South Africa over the years.

Those concerns are real.

Those concerns matter.

And they deserve continued attention.

But football is different.

For ninety minutes, I was not viewing South Africa through politics.

I was viewing South Africa through football.

And as an African, I found myself hoping they would find a way back into the game.

Not because difficult issues should be ignored.

But because football remains one of the few places where Africans can celebrate together rather than divide themselves.

On this day, I wanted Africa to smile.

And when South Africa equalized, part of Africa smiled.

When Football Becomes Bigger Than Football

After the match, the celebration continued outside the stadium.

The rain came.

Nobody cared.

South African supporters continued singing and dancing.

What struck me most was the unity I witnessed.

Black South Africans.

White South Africans.

Young and old.

Men and women.

Singing together.

Dancing together.

Celebrating together.

Many proudly wore South African colors and traditional attire.

I stood there watching, listening, and appreciating every moment.

I did not understand all the words of the songs being sung.

I did not need to.

Their joy required no translation.

Their unity required no explanation.

The scene reminded me of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of people coming together across racial lines in mutual respect and common purpose.

That evening, football became bigger than football.

It became a celebration of shared humanity.

History Made Before the First Whistle

Only after the match did I fully appreciate the significance of what I had witnessed.

The referee and both assistant referees were women.

Together, they formed the first all-female on-field officiating crew in a men’s FIFA World Cup match.

History had quietly walked onto the field before kickoff.

Referee Tori Penso, assisted by Kathryn Nesbitt and Brooke Mayo, handled the occasion with confidence and authority.

What impressed me most was not their gender.

It was their competence.

If nobody had informed me afterward that history had been made, I would simply have said they officiated an excellent match.

And perhaps that is the greatest compliment possible.

More Than a Match

When I left Mercedes-Benz Stadium, I was thinking about much more than a 1-1 draw.

I was thinking about the journey.

From Lagos to Atlanta.

From youth football to the FIFA World Cup.

From participant to observer.

From dreamer to honored guest.

Football had come full circle.

The Importance of Being Remembered

Perhaps the most emotional aspect of the week was the recognition itself.

Many footballers complete distinguished careers and quietly fade into history.

Some are forgotten.

East Point chose a different path.

The city deliberately honored former players and football professionals whose contributions helped shape the sport.

For me personally, more than four decades after my international career began, that recognition was deeply humbling.

Football opened another door.

Once again.

Meet the FIFA Legends

The East Point FIFA Legends Celebration brought together former international footballers whose careers spanned World Cups, Olympic Games, continental championships, and professional leagues across the globe.

Among them were former South African international Lance Davids, whose football network includes five players currently representing South Africa at the FIFA World Cup 2026; former Jamaican international Jermaine Hue, former Nigerian Super Falcons goalkeeper Judith Chime, a FIFA Women’s World Cup and Olympic Games participant; Stern John, Trinidad & Tobago’s all-time leading goalscorer and a member of the country’s historic 2006 FIFA World Cup squad; and Renson Haynes, former St. Vincent & the Grenadines international, national team manager, and football administrator.

Together, they represented different nations, generations, and football journeys, yet shared a common bond through their contributions to the global game.

*The People Behind the Celebration: Football Ambassadors and Community Builders*

Behind every successful event are individuals whose vision, leadership, and commitment bring ideas to life.

East Point’s FIFA Legends initiative benefited from the leadership of Chantel Ross-Francois, President and CEO of the East Point Convention & Visitors Bureau; Nick Shah, Chairman of the East Point Cultural Arts Council; Robb Pitts, Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners; and former East Point Mayor Patsy Jo Hilliard, a trailblazer in Georgia public service.

The celebration was further strengthened by the participation of Chris Bullock, South African football executive and FIFA-licensed football agent; Dr. Prince Ero Ibhafidon, international businessman and entrepreneur; and Shelley “Butch” Anthony III, founder of This Is It! Southern Kitchen & Bar-B-Q, whose support reflected the strong partnership between football, business, tourism, and community development.

Their collective efforts helped transform the East Point FIFA Legends Celebration into a memorable week of football, cultural exchange, youth engagement, and international friendship.

Final Whistle

The record books will show a 1-1 draw between South Africa and Czechia.

History will remember the first all-female officiating crew in a men’s FIFA World Cup match.

I will remember something more personal.

I will remember East Point honoring football’s past while embracing football’s future.

I will remember FIFA Legends gathering in fellowship.

I will remember thousands singing “Take Me Home” as one voice.

I will remember South Africans celebrating together in the rain.

And I will remember a sport that continues to unite people across continents, cultures, races, and generations.

Four decades after football first opened doors for me, I found myself walking through another one—not as a player chasing a dream, but as a FIFA Legend being honored by the game that helped shape my life.

Football gave me memories.

Football gave me friendships.

Football gave me purpose.

Football was not my destination.

It was my transportation.

Football opened the first door for me as a young player. Four decades later, it opened another as a FIFA Legend. The game changes. The stadiums change. The generations change. But football’s ability to connect people, preserve memories, and create opportunities remains timeless.*

Share Note

If this story resonates with you, share it with someone who understands that football is more than ninety minutes. It is memory. It is identity. It is opportunity. It is legacy. And sometimes, decades after the final whistle, it still opens another door.

LSSTF to Revamp Iconic Rowe Park Hall, Squash Courts /2026/06/27/lsstf-to-revamp-iconic-rowe-park-hall-squash-courts/ /2026/06/27/lsstf-to-revamp-iconic-rowe-park-hall-squash-courts/#respond Sat, 27 Jun 2026 03:35:58 +0000 /?p=1219639

The Lagos State Sports Trust Fund (LSSTF) has announced plans to restore the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex at Rowe Park, Yaba, with a full renovation of its Indoor Sports Hall and long-neglected Squash Courts. The project marks a significant step in reviving one of Nigeria’s most historic sporting landmarks.

For decades, Rowe Park has been a cradle of talent, nurturing athletes who rose from grassroots beginnings to national acclaim.

During an inspection of the facility on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, LSSTF Chairman Wahid Oshodi described it as the “heartbeat of grassroots sports in Lagos,” noting its central role in talent discovery.

“This is the home of talent discovery in Nigeria,” Oshodi said. “Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved that we update, renovate, and do whatever it takes to bring this facility back to international standard.”

The renovation comes at a crucial time, with Lagos preparing to host the maiden National Intermediate Games in October. Oshodi assured that the hall would be ready, explaining: “We have just a few months, but work is ongoing. The plan now is to accelerate progress and ensure completion before the end of September.” He praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to grassroots sports, stressing that the project is not only about competitions but also about recreation, youth engagement, and keeping young people off the streets.

For many Lagosians, Rowe Park is more than a sports complex—it is a landmark of memory. Its courts and halls have echoed with the cheers of young athletes chasing dreams, and its legacy is deeply woven into Nigeria’s sporting fabric. Oshodi acknowledged this heritage, expressing gratitude to donors and partners who are helping restore the facility to its rightful place.

Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, described the renovation as a turning point. He called the complex a “laboratory for talent development,” recalling how countless Nigerian sporting icons began their journeys there. “This is an opportunity to restore past glory while ensuring sustainability through proper maintenance. Whether for recreation or competition, the facility will serve its purpose,” Fatodu said.

Looking ahead, Fatodu painted a vivid picture of October’s festival of sport. “Hosting the National Intermediate Games gives us the chance to showcase Lagos as fully prepared for any competition. By mid-September, this facility will come alive again, ready to host over 12,000 athletes and officials. It will be a huge celebration of sport,” he enthused.

NSSF Applauds Nestlé’s Enduring Role in School Sports Development /2026/06/27/nssf-applauds-nestles-enduring-role-in-school-sports-development/ /2026/06/27/nssf-applauds-nestles-enduring-role-in-school-sports-development/#respond Sat, 27 Jun 2026 03:33:01 +0000 /?p=1219638

The Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) has commended NestlĂ© Nigeria Plc. for its unwavering commitment to grassroots sports through the consistent sponsorship of the country’s longest-running school basketball competition — the MILO Secondary School Basketball Championship.

Now in its 26th edition, the annual tournament has produced numerous talents who have gone on to represent Nigeria at continental and international levels.

At a press briefing ahead of the national finals, which tip off todays, NSSF President Olabisi Joseph described Nestlé’s support as “unrivalled.” She noted: “On behalf of the Nigeria School Sport Federation, I sincerely thank NestlĂ© Nigeria Plc. and the MILO brand for their unwavering support and commitment to youth development through sports. Your investment over the past twenty-six years has positively impacted millions of Nigerian children and created a legacy in school sports.”

Joseph emphasized that the championship has become more than just a competition: “For 26 editions, the impact has been remarkable. The MILO brand has partnered with NSSF to build a foundation where passion meets purpose, serving as a breeding ground for excellence. Many young talents discovered here have gone on to represent their states, wear the national colours, and even build successful professional careers both at home and abroad.”

Beyond the basketball court, the tournament has instilled discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship among students. It has also promoted academic balance, cultural unity, and leadership development, shaping participants into responsible future leaders.

This year’s edition saw over 13,000 schools across Nigeria compete from state preliminaries to the national finals, with 12 teams — including debutants from Katsina and Ekiti — battling for glory in Lagos. Joseph remarked: “What started as a modest initiative has grown into a national movement. The participation of over 13,000 schools this year alone demonstrates the tremendous impact and reach of this programme.”

In addition to the competition, the finals will feature clinics, mentorship sessions, and cultural exhibitions. To ensure fairness, NSSF will deploy screening, biometrics, and data capturing to confirm eligibility of school-aged participants.

Joseph concluded that the championship is not just about winning trophies but about nurturing confidence, leadership, and citizenship among Nigerian youth.

Giwa, Quadri Set for Prime Atlantic Squash Double Final Showdown /2026/06/27/giwa-quadri-set-for-prime-atlantic-squash-double-final-showdown/ /2026/06/27/giwa-quadri-set-for-prime-atlantic-squash-double-final-showdown/#respond Sat, 27 Jun 2026 03:31:04 +0000 /?p=1219637

Emerging squash stars, Shuaib Giwa and Yusuf Quadri will renew their rivalry in both the U-19 and senior men’s finals at the Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament after recording convincing victories in their respective semifinal matches.

Giwa secured his place in the U-19 final with a 3-0 victory over Joshua Daniel before causing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by defeating senior player Samson Asade 3-0 to reach the men’s final.

Quadri also enjoyed a successful outing, overcoming Benjamin Monday 3-0 in the U-19 category before defeating his older brother, Ayomide Yusuf 3-0 to qualify for the men’s final.

The double qualification sets up a fascinating battle between two of Nigeria’s brightest squash prospects, with both players chasing honours in the junior and senior categories.

The encounter also rekindles a rivalry dating back to the 2025 edition of the tournament, when the pair met in the U-19 final and Quadri emerged victorious.

Speaking after his victories, Giwa expressed confidence ahead of the two finals.

“I am confident about meeting Yusuf in the finals. We know each other’s game very well and I am ready for the challenge.

“I have worked hard to get to this stage and I will give my best in both matches,” he said.

Quadri said ” Giwa and I will play the best of squash and I am optimistic about retaining my title in both categories.

“I will play as I should, I have trained and I will leave the rest to God,” he said.

Nigeria Squash Federation President Wilson Egberipou said the performances of the young players were evidence that investments in youth development were beginning to yield results.

“I expected some upsets and a high level of play because some of the junior players have been exposed to better techniques through our development programmes.

“It is turning out to be a fruitful investment. I am impressed with what I have seen and happy that the results are beginning to show,” he said.

In the women’s category, Rofiat Abdulazeez defeated Faridah Soliat 3-0 to qualify for the final, while national No. 2 Mosturah Durosinlorun beat Awawu Balogun 3-0 to set up a title clash with Abdulazeez.

The finals are expected to provide a fitting climax to the tournament, with Giwa and Quadri’s quest for a double crown likely to be the centre of attention.

Spain’s Nico Williams Ready to Start  against Uruguay /2026/06/26/spains-nico-williams-ready-to-start-against-uruguay/ /2026/06/26/spains-nico-williams-ready-to-start-against-uruguay/#respond Fri, 26 Jun 2026 09:32:00 +0000 /?p=1219182

Winger Nico Williams said yesterday that he was ready to join teammate Lamine Yamal in Spain’s starting 11 in their crucial Group H game with Uruguayan the early hours of Saturday.

Spain top the group ahead of the match in Guadalajara, Mexico — after beating Saudi Arabia 4-0 in their last game, with back-from-injury Yamal playing a starring role — but still need a result to confirm their qualification in first place, and avoid a potential clash with Argentina in the round of 32.

Yamal played 45 minutes against Saudi Arabia in Atlanta, while Williams was limited to a half-hour cameo.

“Physically I feel good,” Williams told journalists ahead of Spain training in Guadalajara on Thursday. “But I still need to find competitive rhythm, that spark that defines me. That will come, with the extra training I’m doing.”

Williams, who was key to Spain’s success at Euro 2024, said whether he comes into the starting line-up or not will be decided by coach Luis de la Fuente.

“I’ll keep working as I have been,” he said. “If the boss gives me a chance, that will be welcome, if not, I’ll keep working hard and supporting my teammates … No, [there’d be no problem starting].”

“[Messi] doesn’t surprise me,” he said. “Messi is Messi. He does the things he does, he’s incredible. And as well there’s VinĂcius [Junior], [Erling] Haaland, [Kylian] MbappĂ©, competing for the Golden Boot … I hope we can be clinical in front of goal, and see the best of Lamine, too.”

In Spain’s game with Saudi Arabia, Pedro Porro came into the side at right-back and linked up well with Yamal. “It’s a privilege to play with him,” Porro said. “There are various aspects of the game which you have to bear in mind when you have a player like Lamine in front of you, but that’s all. I’ve played a lot of games with him already, and over time we understand each other better.”

Winger YĂ©remy Pino praised de la Fuente’s role in managing the squad.

“He’s been so impressive with me,” Pino said.

“In the way he treated me, when I came back from a long-term injury. He supported me. For me and the group he’s essential, he helps this team grow and believe in itself.”
