Indigenes of Irri community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State yesterday disrupted operations at Oil Mining Lease (OML) 60 Flow Station operated by Oando Plc.

The flow station, formerly operated by Agip Nigeria Limited, supplies 60 to 70 percent of gas to Kwale/Okpai Gas Plant.

The protesters, mostly men, women and youths, stormed the flow station and prevented workers access and exit to their offices on the premise that the oil firm failed in associating with the development of the community.

They claimed they took the action over alleged insensitivity of the company to the plight of Irri community where oil was discovered shortly after that of Oloibiri in Bayelsa State.

The angry women carried placards reading thus: ‘We Need Our PIA Deductions’; ‘Our Skill Acquisition Centre/Hospital Dormant’; ‘No Single Project By Oando Since 2017’; ‘Irri Needs Gas Turbine. We Need Employment’; ‘We Need Upgrade Of Our Indigenes in Oando’; ‘We Need EIA Report’, among others.

The protesters vowed not to vacate the premises of the oil company until their demands are met.

To demonstrate their seriousness, the protesters placed a coffin at the entrance of the facility, performed some rituals before setting up canopies where food were prepared for them for as a long as they occupy the firm.

Odio Silas Efajemue, the Odio- in-Council, who spoke on behalf of the traditional ruler of Irri, His Royal Majesty, Simon Wajutome Odhomo, Igbogidi 1, the Odio Ologbo of Irri kingdom, lamented the pathetic power situation affecting the community.

He said: “The Flow Station formerly operated by Agip and now taken over by Oando has been operating in our community for many years and there is nothing to show for it. Irri is in darkness for many years now.

“We need light (power), and if we do not get it and our other demands are not met, we will shut down the flow station.”

The President, Irri Development Union (IDU), Mr. John Ozaveva Eweh said Agip now Oando, has been operating in the community for many years adding “In all these years, the community has been left behind.”

He disclosed that the leadership of Irri has written several letters, made series of requests but no avail.

“The firm never even deemed it fit to respond to series of our letters making demands but to no avail. They are in our land working and exploiting our God-given resources without giving regards to our community in which they operate,” he added.

The Secretary to the palace of Odio-Ologbo of Irri kingdom, Hon. Efewoma Okiroro Otuaga, also lamented the ignominy with which Oando has been treating the community.

He said since Oando took over operations from Agip, the new management never deemed it necessary to even pay a visit to the royal father of the community.

Otuaga also lamented that none of their Indigenes holds any management position preferring to recruit them for manual labour, stressing that an Irri man with a doctorate works there as a junior staff.

He stated the protesters would remain at the premises of the company until their demands were met adding that if in the next 48 hours, shut down the operations of the company.

Head of the military deployed to the facility, Captain K.O Popoola, made several attempts to placate the protesters but to no avail.

He had to plead with them not to be violent in their agitation, assuring them that a report had been sent to the appropriate authority to look into their demands.

NMDPRA Seals 19 Illegal LPG Outlets in Delta /2025/02/05/nmdpra-seals-19-illegal-lpg-outlets-in-delta/ /2025/02/05/nmdpra-seals-19-illegal-lpg-outlets-in-delta/#respond Wed, 05 Feb 2025 03:44:35 +0000 /?p=1053922

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) yesterday sealed 19 illegal Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and category D cooking gas outlets in Delta State.

The Coordinator, NMDPRA in Delta, Victor Ohwodiasa, told journalists yesterday that the illegal gas outlets were sealed within the past two weeks.

He said the illegal gas outlets were shut in Orerokpe, Ogwashi-Ukwu, Warri and its environs.

The category D class of LPG operators were the ones within localities that refill gas from licenced gas plants for customers to pick up from them.

Ohwodiasa, said the illegal gas outlets were shut over offences ranging from lack of prerequisite approvals to operate such facilities and unsafe locations.

“During the operations, about 28 illegal outlets were spotted by the authority. We tried to see if it is possible to have them regularised as they were wrongly sited.

“The outlet that was sealed in Ogwashi-Ukwu was a five metric tonnes refilling plant constructed on a roadside closed to a high tension cable.

“The authority looked at the environment, it was wrongly sited, on a right of way and has no approval. It was sealed and a relocation order issued immediately,” he said.

Owhodiasa disclosed that other offenders were the ones doing what he called, “decanting,” meaning bottle-to-bottle transfer, which he said the NMDPRA does not allow that.

“What they are expected to do is “bottle swap”, bring your empty cylinder and go with a filled one,” he said.

The coordinator said the essence of the exercise was not to frustrate the small-scale gas business owners but to ensure they operate in a safe and secure environment.

Ohwodiasa appealed to landlords not to allocate portions of their land to the LPG category D operators who want to do illegal business in their premises or properties.

According to him, the essence was to prevent possible fire outbreaks that could destroy lives and properties of the operators and the neighbours.

He said the NMDPRA was committed to ensuring lives and properties were adequately protected.

“Imaging someone storing cooking gas close to where welding operation is taking place or where a woman is frying beans cake or roasting corn. Once there is leakage, the resultant effect will be catastrophic.

“If the operator of the illegal outlet does not appreciate his life, we must ensure he does not kill himself and others by illegally operating such facility,” he said.

Ohwodiasa said the regulatory authority would continue to sustain the exercise in the state and assured that anybody found wanting would face the full wrath of the law.

He also said any offender who refuses to relocate his facility would be handed over to the relevant security agencies for prosecution.

The coordinator appealed to the public to report anyone transferring cooking gas from one cylinder to another to the NMDPRA for prompt action pleading, “help us to serve you better”.

Ohwodiasa, while assuring that the regulatory body would continue to sensitise the operators, said the authority had annual stakeholders’ engagement with the gas plant owners and the category D operators.

He also said that the regulatory authority organise jingles on radios and televisions stations to educate people on the best ways to handle cooking gas because of its volatility.

The coordinator thanked the Chief Executive of NMDPRA, Ahmed Faruok for his consistent support for the state’s operations

Tompolo Accuses Nigerian Navy of Aiding, Abetting Crude Oil Theft   /2024/11/20/tompolo-accuses-nigerian-navy-of-aiding-abetting-crude-oil-theft/ /2024/11/20/tompolo-accuses-nigerian-navy-of-aiding-abetting-crude-oil-theft/#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2024 07:34:27 +0000 /?p=1032750

*Says navy collaborates, encourages oil thieves

Sylvester Idowu in Warri

Chairman, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), one of the private security firms engaged by the federal government to secure oil assets, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, has accused the Nigerian Navy of frustrating the war against crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.

Tompolo said the Navy was aiding and abetting crude oil theft and other sharp practices associated with petroleum products in the oil-rich region.

He accused the navy of collaborating and encouraging illegal oil barons to sabotage the country’s economy.
Ekpemupolo made the accusation on Monday night while receiving the national leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by its National President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), at Oporoza, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

He lamented that the navy was working at cross purposes with other state actors and private security outfits saddled with surveillance over the country’s economic assets in the region.

The Tantita boss told his guests that operatives of the Nigerian Navy were colluding with criminal elements to steal the country’s oil wealth.

Ekpemupolo recounted instances in which the operatives of the navy had stalled the arrest of oil thieves at various creeks of the Niger Delta.

He said the operatives, especially from the Nigerian Navy, freely provided and offered security cover and protection for the oil thieves in the course of their nefarious activities.

Ekpemupolo lamented that personnel of the Nigerian Navy openly confronted their counterparts from the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and officials of TSSNL in a desperate effort to secure passage for oil thieves.

He said the development constituted a cog in the wheel of progress in the war against sabotage of the country’s economic assets.

Tompolo stated, “While doing this work, we have stepped on a lot of toes of people over there in Lagos and Abuja. Most times, you see that Tantita Security Services now have engagements in open confrontation with the Nigerian Navy, which has refused to cooperate with us in the war against crude oil theft.

“The navy is working at cross purposes with other government and private security agencies saddled with the responsibility to curb illegal oil bunkering.

“The navy is aiding and abetting these criminals to continue to sabotage the nation’s economy. In fact, the Nigerian Navy is frustrating us. The operatives of the navy are colluding and collaborating with these criminals to swindle the nation.
“The operatives are neck deep in the menace of oil bunkering. They are making it difficult for us to win the war.”
The Tantita chairman explained, “Just few days ago, men of Tantita Security Services intercepted a vessel carrying stolen crude oil in Port Harcourt, the personnel of the Nigerian Navy provided escort duties on-board the vessel.

“The navy personnel on-board the vessel and others speedily mobilised to the scene with gunboats and other equipment, opened fire on our men and officials of civil defence corps and DSS, who insisted that the vessel could not sail further.”
Ekpemupolo said the naval personnel eventually prevailed due to their superior firepower, and secured passage for the vessel.

He added, “Similar situation occurred at Ovwian community in Delta State, recently, when naval personnel also overpowered and subdued Tantita operatives to secure safe passage for another vessel carrying stolen crude. The cases of involvement of naval personnel in oil theft are too many to recount here.

“Every well-meaning Nigerian knows the function of Nigerian Navy and Tantita now, but nobody wants to come out to face the truth. The Nigerian Navy we support to safeguard the nation’s maritime assets has sacrificed its constitutional obligation for pecuniary benefits.”

Ekpomukpolo did not spare NBA. He said its members made their services available to arrested oil thieves, explaining, “If we happen to arrest anybody now, we would get a lawyer from Abuja, Lagos or Ibadan, to deploy all legal nuances to secure freedom for the criminal.

“We want to implore and beg members of NBA:  you have a duty to play in this present situation because if we are not careful in this country, maybe we would not have money to do any reasonable thing. All of us here know that Nigeria is facing hardship.

“We are going to do our part locally. But you are there at the top. If we arrest today, lawyers would stand on the other side and this side.”

Ekpemupolo appealed to lawyers to assist in the fight against oil saboteurs.

He stated, “What I want to appeal is that you need to help us. If somebody is coming to load a vessel of 500 metric tonnes in this community, nobody has that capacity to embark on such job here, the person comes from either Lagos or neighbouring countries or Abuja.

“A hungry man here, who is serving as an errand boy to the barons, is the one that would be arrested.”

However, despite the challenges, Ekpemupolo assured that Tantita would collaborate with other patriotic bodies to ensure steady rise in the production of crude oil.

He congratulated all stakeholders who made the recent attainment of 1.8 million barrels per day (mbpd) production of crude oil possible and assured that Tantita would spare no efforts to ensure that 2mbpd of crude oil was attained by December 2025.

Responding, Osigwe commended TSSNL and other stakeholders on the attainment of 1.8m barrels of crude oil per day and promised that NBA would collaborate with Tantita and other stakeholders to stamp out the menace of crude oil theft in the region.

He explained the purpose of the visit by NBA.

Osigwe stated, “Our branches in the oil-bearing areas should be interested in the issues of oil theft which goes on in many communities because it has affected our national economy and also impacted negatively in the ability of government to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

“It has also impacted negatively on our foreign reserves. It has adversely affected Nigeria’s ability to meet its minimum OPEC quarter for oil production. We felt that the matter should be taken seriously.

“We thought that it would be a good place for us to come first to get first-hand knowledge of how this battle has been fought, and the challenges approached, and how the fight has helped improve the Nigerian economic standing.

“And after our NEC meeting, we heard the big announcement by the NNPCL CEO that oil production, first time in many years, has risen to 1.8mbpd with the hope of rising to about 2 million barrel per day by December.

“And we thought that this is very important because in the last few years, Nigeria has been borrowing to fund the budget, borrowing to pay salaries and execute projects.

“And our understanding of the economy is that if the country earns more from oil, which we produce, we would be able to borrow less and the government will be able to do some of the developmental activities and put infrastructures in place as expected.”

Osigwe added, “We also thought to take this visit as an opportunity to see the impact of oil exploration in the environment of the oil-bearing communities in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. And also see in what ways these communities, which form the wealth base of the nation, have benefitted from oil exploration activities and how the oil exploration has negatively impacted these communities.”

The monarch of Gbaramatu Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oboro Gbaruan II, Aketekpe/Agadagba, Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, thanked NBA for the visit, which he said was timely.

According to him, “We need people like this to come to see for yourselves, this is Gbaramatu.  Before now, people were making all sorts of allegations against Gbaramatu Kingdom, but now you are here. We always tell people, if you are coming to Gbaramatu Kingdom, don’t be afraid.”

The Ijaw monarch said the kingdom was working for the peace of Niger Delta by extending hands of fellowship to other kingdoms.

He said, “Ijaw people stand for truth. We are a peaceful people.

“This is Gbaramatu Kingdom, we stand for peace, we stand to extend hands of fellowship, we work for the peace of Niger Delta, and this is how we find ourselves.”

He lamented the absence of government infrastructure in the kingdom, despite being a major contributor to the purse of the nation.

Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, yesterday mourned the demise of former deputy governor of Delta State, Professor Amos Utuama, describing him as a defender of rule of law.
Similarly, the Senator representing Delta North District, Senator Ned Nwoko described the passage of Processor Utuama as monumental loss to Deltans.
The deceased, a Professor of Law in University of Lagos, was the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Chief James Ibori’s administration.
Utuama, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who was Deputy Governor of Delta State between 2007 and 2015 when Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan was governor, passed at 77 years.
While reacting to his death, Senator Omo-Agege, in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Sunny Areh, described the deceased as a legal luminary that distinguished himself in fighting for the rule of law to prevail in all affairs of state and levels of government.
He said Prof. Utuama was one of the persons that headlined the emergence of a stable federation at the onset of the Fourth Republic.
“Having come into Chief Ibori’s government as an accomplished law teacher, Prof. Utuama was very instrumental in using his stature to instill a level of stability and respect for states at a time the Fourth Republic was still wobbling as a federation where different political parties held sway in different states”, Omo-Agege said.
He recalled the days when Chief Ibori initiated the legal battles that preceded the commencement of the payment of 13 percent derivation fund as enshrined in the Constitution adding that Prof. Utuama’s stature and expertise drove the legal process that gave victory to the Niger Delta states.
“Indeed, the Niger Delta, not just Delta State, has lost a great son. His legacy will never be forgotten and Nigeria was lucky to have had him in government at the time his calibre was desperately needed,” Omo-Agege stated.
He commiserated with the Urhobo nation, Delta State and the Niger Delta region on the death of the former deputy governor, in his tribute.
In his tribute, the Senator representing Delta North at the National Assembly, Prince Ned Munir Nwoko, described the exit of the former deputy governor of Delta State as a monumental loss to Deltans.
He described the deceased as selfless in the service of the state as deputy governor under the administration of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, between 2007-2015.
Senator Nwoko stated that the late Professor Utuama as a legal luminary, outstanding academic and proficient administrator, helped in stabilizing Delta on the path of peace, social cohesion and sustainable development.
His words: “Delta lost an illustrious son. The former deputy governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Professor Amos Utuama, would be remembered for his invaluable footprints in Nigeria’s law profession, education, democracy and governance. He was humble and respectful even in his towering status.
“I can attest that late Professor Utuama led exemplary life. He was elected Deputy Governor under the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, but he was fair and just beyond boundaries.
”On behalf of my political supporters and the entire people of Delta North, Anioma, I extend heartfelt condolence to his immediate family and the people of Otu-jeremi Community, in Ughelli South Local Government Area for the loss of this statesman, scholar and role model.”

Olu of Warri Disbands INYC Leadership Over Failure to Adopt New Constitution /2024/10/30/olu-of-warri-disbands-inyc-leadership-over-failure-to-adopt-new-constitution/ /2024/10/30/olu-of-warri-disbands-inyc-leadership-over-failure-to-adopt-new-constitution/#respond Wed, 30 Oct 2024 01:59:26 +0000 /?p=1026310

The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has disbanded the executive of Itsekiri National Youths Council (INYC).
The monarch announced the dissolution on Monday night during a meeting he summoned to stop the lingering crisis facing the Itsekiri youths’ body.

Itsekiri Youths Assembly had been bogged down with succession processes following failure to adopt a new constitution and conduct election to elect new executives at the National and chapter levels.

Olu of Warri expressed disgust that the process of having executive position in the INYC for about 30 years has been by selection of persons loyal to certain leaders.

The Warri Monarch, at the well-attended Itsekiri Youths Assembly, also declared that nobody above age 40 should be operating as youth in Warri Kingdom.

He immediately appointed Presidents of National Association of Itsekiri Graduates (NAIG) and National Association of Itsekiri Students (NAIS) as the core of a committee to draft new constitution for INYC.

The committee, according to the monarch, will have Chiefs Omolubi Newuwumi and Wilson Olley as working advisers.

According to the Warri Monarch, the constitution drafting committee, which is likely to have more members, has up till January 2025 to conclude its assignment for a new executive council of INYC to be elected.

Local Content Act: Itsekiri, Ijaw, Ilaje Graduates Threaten Shutdown of Chevron Facilities in Delta, Ondo /2024/10/17/local-content-act-itsekiri-ijaw-ilaje-graduates-threaten-shutdown-of-chevron-facilities-in-delta-ondo/ /2024/10/17/local-content-act-itsekiri-ijaw-ilaje-graduates-threaten-shutdown-of-chevron-facilities-in-delta-ondo/#respond Thu, 17 Oct 2024 04:47:03 +0000 /?p=1022332

Graduates of Itsekiri, Ijaw and Ilaje ethnic nationalities have threatened to occupy Chevron facilities in Delta and Ondo States over alleged flagrant disregard for the local content act by the oil firm.

The graduates under the aegis of National Association of Itsekiri Graduates (NAIG); Egbema-Gbaramatu Graduates Employment Front (KOMBOT) and National Association of Ilaje Graduates (NAIG) in Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) areas of operation in Delta and Ondo States, have consequently given the oil firm a seven-day ultimatum to comply with the local content act and halt further recruitments pending the resolution of their demands.

The graduate bodies demands were the outcome of an emergency meeting held in Warri yesterday and therefore appealed to President Bola Tinubu to prevail on the management of the Oil firm to halt its ongoing staff recruitment exercise until the company guarantees them 70% of the employment opportunities.

The bodies, otherwise referred to as the 3Is, in their resolutions demanded that all host communities’ contract staff, including VT 5 and VT 6 graduates, be converted as staff of Chevron Nigeria Limited while contractors of host communities be given right of first refusal in the award of drilling contracts, well head maintenance, production and procurement as well as the reinstatement of Comrade (Engr.) Timmy Okeoghene Okirika, who was terminated by CNL in purported breach of the RDCs, GMoU, PENGASAN CBA, Labour Act, ILO Convention and the National Assembly and Federal Ministry of Labour Resolutions and orders.”

The graduate leaders, in a communique signed by the President and Secretary of NAIG, Esiategiwa Donald Mino and Mrs. Tetsoma Neyin Uruneden; President and Secretary of KOMBOT, Tare Olaye and Charles Kin as well as the President and Secretary of National Association of llaje Graduates, Ikuesan Ademola Kelly and Temidunmi Akins Adeyemi, respectively, expressed displeasure with flagrant disregard for the local content act by the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited.

The communique stated: “Outcome of our emergency meeting, left us grieving and rearing to disrupt the operations of Chevron Nigeria Limited, because the Local Content Act of Nigeria, was not put into cognizance in CNL recruitment exercise.

“It will be heartbreaking to know that events of the past few years, have been characterized by the deliberate and blatant disregard for the opinions, suggestions and aspirations of our people, thereby, leading to the shrinking of our confidence in the commitment of Chevron Nigeria Limited to the peaceful resolution of the issues at stake.”

The graduate bodies recalled the Interview, Screening, Test, Examination and Selection Processes in which their members performed better than CNL’s preferred or anointed candidates, was quickly and deliberately set aside and cancelled to prevent the Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Ilaje from gaining meaningful employment into Chevron.

It noted: “Chevron Vocational Training Program (VT): This programme was meant to recruit and train candidates to be converted into Chevron staff after successful completion. In 2008, huge number of our people (Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Ilaje) successfully went through the selection process, but only few persons were called for the training at Ogere, Ogun State, in 2013, after prolonged protest and confrontation by the host communities.

“This programme, which paved the way for our people to be employed in various roles, was deliberately stopped by Chevron in 2016.

“Our people who successfully completed the Chevron Vocational Training Program (VTP 5 – 2013 & VTP 6 – 2014) are yet to be converted to Chevron Permanent Staff, after Eleven (11) years training completion and working as Contract Staff.

“These persons are overdue to be converted to Direct Chevron employees, having owned the cognate experience to perform excellently in their various roles. Instead of converting them, Chevron would secretly recruit to fill existing positions.”

The graduate bodies maintained that there were thousands of eligible and brilliant graduates of Itsekiri, Ijaw, and llaje, idling because Chevron would prefer to engage them with short term jobs, probably few days, weeks and months, instead of full-time opportunities that were sustainable adding “Chevron has exclusively reserve professions positions such as legal, engineering, medical, accountants, IT analyst and others for their cartel.

“The oppression faced by our people and the current situation defeats the spirit and intent of the Nigerian Local Content Law. The provisions of section 28(2) of the Law explicitly encouraged and authorized companies to employ personnel from their areas of significant operations. It specifically states thus: ‘The Board shall ensure that the operator or project promoter shall maintain a reasonable number of personnel from the areas it has significant operation’.

“In pursuit of the Local Content Act, we have held series of peace meetings between our Regional Development Committees (RDCs) now Host Community Development Trust (HCDTs) and Chevron, which yielded no meaningful result, with Chevron Nigeria Limited, insisting on provoking violence”, they added.

Stakeholders’ Engagements: Group Applauds Presidential Amnesty Coordinator /2024/10/13/stakeholders-engagements-group-applauds-presidential-amnesty-coordinator/ /2024/10/13/stakeholders-engagements-group-applauds-presidential-amnesty-coordinator/#respond Sun, 13 Oct 2024 13:57:00 +0000 /?p=1021258

South-South Reawakening Group (SSRG) has commended Presidential Amnesty Programme Coordinator, Dr. Dennis Otuaro, for engagements with stakeholders across the region in the quest to understand their needs, in terms of training and re-training of youths as well as empowerments of women and aged in various communities.

The group noted that besides creating an enabling environment for open feedback with the people, such engagements would also create an enabling environment for the people to be well informed on the activities of Amnesty program in the region and by so doing, bridge the gap of distrust and acrimony that had existed between management and indigenes in recent past.

SSRG, in a statement issued in Warri over the weekend signed by its Convener, Joseph Ambakederimo, also Chairman Board of Trustees, Community Development Committees of Niger Delta Oil and Gas Producing Areas (CDC), called for sustainability of the stakeholders engagement, as a way of giving the people sense of belonging.

The statement read: “The Presidential Amnesty Program coordinator Dr. Dennis Otuaru’s continued engagement with stakeholders and people of the region is very well articulated and a forward looking strategy in problem solving.

“We applaud the continued transformative stakeholders’ engagements in the region, bringing the people to speed with happening in the Presidential Amnesty Programme is key, it strengthens cooperation and build trust.

“The meetings and engagements undertaken by the leadership of the hold great potential to build strong, long-term partnerships that will not only connect people of the region but drives sustainable growth across multiple strata.”

The group expressed delight that the leadership is purposeful, responsive, and people-serving and urged leaders at all strata of society and all sectors including the governors in the region to reinvent themselves and lead with a servant leader mindset, and lead with selflessness and dignity in the mould of Dr. Dennis Otuaro.

The group stated: “The people’s livelihood, jobs and our national security are at stake if the Presidential Amnesty Programme is not sustained and improved funding is guaranteed.

“What we are advocating will cost money but some things are just too important to ignore, therefore making a case for better funding for purposes to expand the mandate of the programme will not cease.

“We will continue to make this case because the present leadership has shown undiluted capacity that needed to be encouraged and supported in all of its ramifications.

“The issues around calling for the expansion of the programme would be in addition to begin further engagements in collaboration with the Community Development Committees of Niger Delta Oil and Gas Producing Areas (CDC) and operators of the unlicensed refineries and pipeline vandals taking it from where the Community Development Committees of Niger Delta Oil and Gas Producing Areas (CDC) has achieved with a view to bringing them under the Presidential Amnesty Programme fold and provide alternative incentives to make them look away and have a new lease of lives.”

SSRG noted that the Presidential Amnesty Programme is the agency of government well suited to undertake the initiative that the CDC is putting forward “because in our interaction with the operators it was discovered that many of them are willing to further their educational pursuit, some are willing to acquire new skills in diverse areas of human endeavour such as steel fabrication and Metallurgy, areas where they have already shown some prowess and needed to be put through formal training that will further add to national development.

“It is important to note that the CDC has made very important gains chiefly amongst which is identifying and putting a face to unlicensed refineries operators in the region and the willingness of the operators to come out of the creeks and engage in meaningful talks that will eventually turn their lives and livelihoods for the better and for society.

“In view of the foregoing we urge the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to take a critical view of the CDC’s initiative and successes to deepened this engagement with the operators and reap from the gains therein”.

Oxytane Africa Investment Limited has unveiled Oxytane, a product that enhances high-performance fuel treatment. This will help production and manufacturing companies cut fuel and diesel costs and reduce emissions.

The General Manager, Operations of the firm, Eseosa Vanessa Oviawe, while unveiling the products in Warri yesterday, said they were produced in UK and Indonesia and being marketed in Nigeria by Oxytane Africa Investment Limited.

According to her, Oxytane is cutting-edge product for reshaping fuel efficiency and emissions reduction.

“The world is shifting toward more sustainable practices and Nigerian businesses, especially those with high fuel demands. But with Oxytane products, manufacturing companies now have the opportunity to reduce costs, cut carbon footprint, and tap into the growing carbon credit market.

“Oxytane, a revolutionary fuel additive, is at the forefront of this movement, providing practical and profitable solutions for companies seeking to optimise their fuel consumption and environmental impact,” she said.

Oviawe, described Oxytane as a high-performance fuel treatment that improves fuel efficiency, cleans contaminated fuel, and dramatically reduces carbon emissions.

According to her, Oxytane was designed for petrol, diesel, and kerosene use, adding that it optimises fuel systems, ensuring that every drop of fuel would be utilised more effectively.

“This leads to lower fuel consumption, extending the life of fuel supplies and cutting operational costs, making it essential for industries reliant on diesel and other fuels.

“Oxytane’s precise dosage guidelines make it easy to incorporate into daily operations such as; 10ml of Oxytane treats 50 litres of fuel; 20ml of Oxytane covers 100 litres; 30ml of Oxytane is effective for 150 litres; 100ml of Oxytane works for 500 litres; 1 litre of Oxytane treats 5,000 litres of fuel. These precise measurements allow companies to maximize fuel efficiency, reduce costs, and enjoy better overall performance,” she said.

By enhancing fuel combustion, Oviawe disclosed that Oxytane helps cut down on harmful emissions, stressing that this makes it a crucial tool for businesses aiming to meet environmental standards while reducing their impact on the planet. Adopting Oxytane also signals a strong commitment to sustainability, which can enhance a company’s public image.

“With the carbon credit industry valued at over $500 billion, Nigerian companies can generate significant revenue by reducing their emissions with Oxytane and selling their credits, similar to what many European and American firms are doing.

“Oxytane works with petrol, diesel, and kerosene, making it ideal for various sectors, from logistics to power generation. Its versatility ensures businesses in multiple industries can take advantage of its cost and environmental benefits.

“Also, Oxytane Africa Investment Limited offers emissions inventory services to help businesses and government bodies track their emissions and qualify for carbon credits.

“This means Nigerian companies can not only save on fuel but also generate new revenue streams from their sustainability efforts,” she added.

Oviawe further disclosed that â€œOxytane product is distributed across Nigeria through a strategic partnership with NNPC Retail Limited.

“The product is available at NNPC Retail Company-Owned Dealership Operated (CODO) stations nationwide, making it easily accessible for both individual consumers and large businesses.

“For industrial clients looking for bulk purchases, Oxytane Africa Investment Limited has established dedicated offices at NNPC Retail Apapa in Lagos and Katampe/Kubwa in Abuja.”

Women from across the Niger Delta region have said they and their children will not be part of the planned protest slated for October 1 against the Federal Government.

The Niger Delta women, from all the ethnic groups in the region at a stakeholders’ engagement put together by the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) in Warri Wednesday, expressed the fear that there were some internal and external motives behind the protest.

Rising from the meeting with the theme ‘Niger Delta Women: Empowerment As A Panacea For Peace, Stability and Economic Growth,’ the women lamented that many self-interested bodies are presently going about with ulterior motives asking people to do negative things.

The gathering was in continuation of the expanded Niger Delta stakeholders’ meeting of women groups and youth bodies, community leaders, opinion leaders, elders, traditional rulers and camp leaders by the Amnesty Programme office.

In their resolution at the end of the parley, the women directed their children and wards to shun the planned protests against the authorities.

To this end, they pleaded with Nigerians to give the Bola Tinubu administration a chance to confront and deal with the multi-faceted challenges facing the country.

While lauding President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its support for women and youths in the region, they stated that: “When you appoint the right people into the right position, then you should start seeing positive result.”

The Niger Delta Women Leader, Madam Beauty Warejuowei, who read the communiquĂ© of the meeting, urged women in the region to “stand firm and make the best use of opportunities given them by the authorities”, adding that: “This will give government the encouragement to do even more.”

According to her, “The Niger Delta region has been having PAP coordinators before now, but this is the time we can say the right people has been appointed to the right position.”

The Administrator of PAP,  Dr. Dennis Otuaro, commended the women forum for their support for the present administration just as he acknowledged their role in sustaining peace in the region.

He said: “We have to do it together. Talking peace in the Niger Delta, it is our women that are sustaining the peace.  The destiny of Niger Delta is in the hands of women.”

Otuaro added that the economic challenges in the country were temporary and appealed to the women group not to relent in their efforts to support the administration’s socioeconomic initiatives.

The PAP Administrator assured the women groups of sustained empowerment, vocational trainings, grants and scholarships to further add value to their lives.

Notable women leaders from the Niger Delta that graced the meeting included a frontline woman activist in the region, Ann-Kio Briggs; Chief (Mrs) Vero Tamgbowe, Madam Beauty Warejuowei, as well as the President of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Jonathan Lokpobiri and the pioneer IYC President, T. K. Ogoriba, among others.

The Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area in Delta State, Weyinmi Isaac Agbateyiniro, has cautioned property developers in the upland and riverine areas to steer clear of natural water channels.

Agbateyiniro in a statement issued at the weekend frowned at the manner in which some persons build residential houses, shops and other business structures on water channels.  He warned that  his administration would not tolerate situations where shop owners erect makeshift structures on drainages.

The council boss challenged community and opinion leaders as well as heads of faith-based organisations to partner his administration in the resolve to re-orientate the minds of residents of Warri, to ensure cleaner environment and prevent flood disaster in the city.

Agbateyiniro stressed the need for people of Warri South Local Government Area to be  compliant with ongoing efforts by the state government and his administration  on cleanliness and beautification, cannot be over-emphasised.

Indigenes of four Itsekiri communities in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State have asked for help to fight against the menace of ocean surge leading to coastal erosion.

The devastating ocean surge has been sweeping  through Ogheye Eghoroke, Orere, Ogheye Zion and Ogheye Ajadogo communities for the past two weeks.

Sole Representative of the Olu of Warri/Liaison to Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Edema Collins Oritsetimeyin, in a statement  lamented the plight of residents of the communities and threat to their ancestral homes.

Oritsetimeyin disclosed that the Itsekiri communities were facing a dire situation due to the relentless ocean surge that has wreaked havoc on their livelihoods, homes, schools and vital infrastructure.

“Ugbeni Primary School, the only school in the community, had been completely washed into the ocean. Several homes, including the residence of the community leader (Olare-Aja), built in 2020 by Hon. Daniel Ireyenieju, have been lost to the advancing waters.

He noted that during an on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected communities, some residents, whose homes were washed away, revealed that they are now forced to squeeze 10 people into a single room for shelter.

“Most alarming is the fact that the community’s only borehole, which served as the sole source of drinking water, has also been claimed by the ocean, leaving residents with no choice but to rely on ocean water for bathing, without access to clean drinking water.

“The situation in the neighboring communities is worse. Ogheye Zion and Ogheye Ajadogo have been entirely submerged, with no trace of the communities’ existence.

“Efforts to reach Orere, the adjacent community to Ogheye Eghoroke, were unsuccessful due to the lack of access to a jetty, as much of the community has been swallowed by the ocean.

“Legacy of Oil Exploration Ogheye is host to Chevron’s offshore oil block, Okan Field, where oil was first discovered in 1963,” he said.

Oritsetimeyin observed that for  over 60 years, oil exploration activities have taken their toll on the shoreline of the communities noting that the  combined effects of oil extraction and natural forces from the Atlantic Ocean have eroded the coastlines, leaving these communities more vulnerable to the encroaching ocean.

“As a result, homes, schools, and the livelihoods of thousands of residents, whose primary occupation is fishing, have been destroyed due to pollution, oil spills, and other harmful consequences of oil exploration activities.

“Additionally, the high infant mortality rate in the region is alarming, and this is largely attributed to toxic pollutants saturating the environment, further endangering the lives of these communities.

“We’re calling on the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Delta State Government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), the United Nations, and all well-meaning individuals and organisations to come to the aid of these vulnerable communities.

“We also call on Chevron, given its long-standing presence in the area, to lead efforts in addressing this crisis. The damage caused by decades of oil exploration must be countered by meaningful action to support the communities that have borne the brunt of environmental degradation,” he pleaded.

The project was brought to fruition in partnership with Fortyfour Services Limited to enhance science learning in the community.

District Governor of D9142, Chinedu Ikegwuani, who unveiled the project during his official visit to Zone 8, expressed satisfaction with the contributions of Rotary Club Edjeba in the upgrade of facilities at the laboratory.

He observed that there were lack of basic things to prepare students for science and improve their knowledge adding, “what I saw in the renovated Physics laboratory is a very good way to start, having the basic needs in the laboratory both for Physics and Chemistry that were ready.

His Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri, has charged his subjects to begin development of their villages by “returning to and rebuilding” the riverine areas.

The monarch also declared that henceforth to become chiefs, elected government officials and community leaders, individuals are to own “homes” in their communities.

The traditional ruler in a statement made available to newsmen in Warri, Delta State, on Monday, noted that the Itsekiri nation had found favour with the current Delta State Government with the recent inspection of the Trans-Warri Road by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and an assurance that it will be completed in two years.

Describing the development as a “symbolic victory” as it (the bridge) will connect the people to their ancestral home, the monarch said “this isn’t just meant to make transportation to and from Ode-Itsekiri easy, it’s also a clarion call to signify the return of Itsekiri to its roots, and to the things that made us great in the first place.

His words: “It is also a symbolic directive, for our people to start returning back to their various homes, especially in the riverine areas. First of all, we cannot keep living in the trauma of the aftermath of the crisis that drove our people out of their various villages all over the riverine.”

The monarch urged all Itsekiri sons and daughters to be “united” and determined to achieve the goal as neither “government,” nor “neighbours who are encroaching” their lands would develop the place for them.

Atuwatse III said he would take the lead by rebuilding “the Ejo Hall in Bateren. After that is done, the land given to AtĂșwĂ tse II in Ajudaibo, will be developed, marking his presence in Benin River and Escravos River areas, respectively.”

He further directed that burial and temotsi (marriage) rites be conducted in the villages, unless cases where the deceased gave otherwise instructions for his or her funeral.

Encouraging his subjects to be proud of their villages, he pointed out that such activities would bring life to the hinterlands.

The traditional ruler re-emphasised his position on discrimination against persons of women’s lineage, stating “we will not tolerate discrimination against people because they are of a woman’s lineage.

“Not only are they welcome to bring development, they are welcome to serve in elders councils and other administrative structures at the community level. We cannot afford to be discriminating against ourselves any longer. We need each other.”

The Nigerian Army, yesterday, said it would sustain its operations in Okuama Community in Ughelli South Local Government area of Delta State until equipment and arms were recovered.

General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, declared during the inauguration of the remodelled and reconstructed Transit Accommodation for soldiers at the 3 Battalion, Nigerian Army, Effurun in Uvwie Local Government.

The project was constructed and donated by the Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), a private pipeline surveillance outfit owned by Dr Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo.

“We remember with sadness, the event of March 14, 2024 in Okuama Community, where our troops were brutally murdered. We will not rest, we will continue to conduct operations until our equipment and arms are recovered,” he said.

Abdussalam said the transit accommodation would addressed the critical needs of the troop adding that the initiative was in line with the philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

The GOC commended the management of the TSSNL for the laudable project, which according to him would benefit the Unit, Brigade and by extension the Nigerian Army.

He said the project underscored the importance of completing operational successes in the field with sound administration and robust welfare of troops.  The GOC also said initiative had demonstrated the importance and power of quality leadership and unity of purpose in the attainment of one big goal.

A group, under the auspices of Better Deltans, has advised Governor Oborevwori to ignore those opposing the demand for audience by Delta State Oil  Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) Contractor’s Forum’s over issues affecting contractors in the delivery of his MORE AGENDA.

Better Deltans, in a statement issued yesterday in reaction to a publication titled ‘DESOPADEC Contractors and Delta State Government: Enough Is Enough’ authored by one Joseph Esivwenughwu, described the publication as a charade aimed at seeking eye service from the government.

In the statement signed by Better Deltans Chairman and Secretary, Messrs Erhirhi Owede and Gbemue Arubima respectively, wondered how somebody that claimed to be an accountant, politician and analyst could not decipher that “we contributed to your election is different from we put you in office” as claimed in his jaundiced writeup.

The group also noted that if the said author had read series of publications from the DESOPADEC Contractor’s Forum in recent times, there was never a time it claimed to be in competition with other contractors in the state since its scope of work has always been under the interventionist agency.

“In response to an intruder who does not understand the difference between what is going on between the governor and DESOPADEC contractors, our group known as Better Deltans is forced to react to a fake and jaundiced publication credited to one Joseph Esivwenughwu titled ‘DESOPADEC Contractor’s and Delta State Government, Enough Is Enough.'”

The group noted that DESOPADEC Contractor’s Forum meant well by seeking the governor’s attention to certain areas that will be of benefit to his agenda and not like some self attention seekers that have nothing to offer the state in terms of development.

Better Deltans said “It is not out of place for a DESOPADEC Contractor’s Forum, who worked for the governor reacted when they see that the governor is not keeping expectations promised to desopadec and contractors.

“The person who did this publication should learn how to read properly before publishing anything. Engr. Ogie Samson, who is the Chairman of DESOPADEC indigenous contractors forum, held meetings with different groups to ensure the patience of every youth in the oil producing area to work with the governor and this is why there has been no protest by DESOPADEC contractors forum.

“It is also not out of place if contractors react due to poor payments and variations that are not done. It will be ideal to understand that DESOPADEC Contractors work for the governor just like all other bodies who want the best for the state. There is a difference between putting someone in a position and contributing to ensure the emergence of someone,” it stated.

The group said it observed that the DESOPADEC Contractor’s Forum has been very diplomatic in approaching the governor of Delta State to iron out some issues, not because they are scared but because of the peaceful and educated nature of the Chairman of the forum, Ogie Samson.

“We would like to remind the governor that some people he trusts so much are completely practicing anti party politics and will want DESOPADEC Indigenous Contractor’s Forum to have a coalition with the state government to put Oborevwori in bad light. The Forum will not fall into their trap. DESOPADEC Contractor’s Forum has a robust relationship with the governor,” it concluded.

The Chief of Staff (CoS) to the Governor of Delta State, Hon. Johnson Erijo, has solicited the support of individuals and organised private sectors in the development of the oil rich state.

Erijo made the solicitation yesterday shortly after inspecting a six-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) built and equipped by Chuks Agidigbo Leadership Foundation and MEDAST Nigeria Limited at the Central Hospital in Kwale, Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The CoS, who was overwhelmed at the state-of-the-art equipment at the ICU, urged operators of the organised private sector and well-to-do individuals to contribute to the development of the state, especially in the provision of infrastructure.

“We are here to inspect the ICU at this hospital, this is a very good development and I will brief my Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori with a view for us to know when it will be most suitable for us to formally receive the structure and facilities from the donors, Chuks Agidigbo Foundation and MEDAST Nigeria Limited,” he said.

Erijo  noted that the gesture was worthy to be emulated by the operators of the organised sector, well-to-do individuals, especially, Deltans,  saying that government alone cannot produce facilities  for the people as stated by Chuks Agidigbo.

Also speaking, Special Adviser to Governor Oborevwori on Project Monitoring, Goodnews Agbi,  said the burden on government to provide infrastructural facilities for the benefit of the people of the state will reduce if well to do individuals and organisations contribute to the development of the state.

“If everybody is doing this, if everybody have the heart to execute projects where there is need for such and they are capable of executing such projects and donate to the government, the burden on government will reduce.

“We are very grateful to you, Mr Agidigbo for this project, we will notify the governor for proper handover of this project to the state government”, he said.

Chief Executive Officer of MEDAST Nigeria Limited, Mr. Chuks Agidigbo, who initiated the project, had while taking Hon. Erijo and top government functionaries on tour of the ICU, disclosed that the experience of people during COVID 19, spurred him to execute the project.

He disclosed that the unit has oxygen flow meters, ventilators, nurse station for monitoring of patients, among other facilities.

“During COVID 19, we saw the need for this facilities to be provided for our people, it is a fully equipped Intensive Care Unit, there is provision for continuous flow of oxygen as this is one facility that is required for the accreditation of a University Teaching Hospital.

“Our aim of providing this facility is to encourage people to find ways to mobilize private sector support for government because, government cannot do it alone, this is the first that we are building in Delta State and by the grace of God, it will not be the last,” he added.

Oborevwori Applauded for Creating Ministry of Riverine Infrastructure /2024/08/20/oborevwori-applauded-for-creating-ministry-of-riverine-infrastructure/ /2024/08/20/oborevwori-applauded-for-creating-ministry-of-riverine-infrastructure/#respond Tue, 20 Aug 2024 03:29:26 +0000 /?p=1005177

The initiator of the creation of Coastal Areas Development Agency (CADA) in Delta State, Chief Sheriff Mulade, has commended the Sheriff Oborevwori administration for creating the Ministry of Riverine Infrastructure.

Chief Mulade, who is the Ibe-Sorimowei of Gbaramatu Kingdom and the National Coordinator of Center for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ) while giving the commendation over the weekend however pleaded for statutory status to the ministry.

The peace advocate said the creation of the ministry and the appointment of Chief Ebikeme Clark both indicated that Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori is a true democrat eager to carry all segments of the state along in his development strides, particularly those in the deprived riverine areas.

He commended the governor for his move to solve the problem of infrastructural deficit in the riverine areas by creating the ministry which he said would go a long way in helping to ease the plights of coastal and riverine rural dwellers.

“I must commend Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for this bold step, which is long overdue. It shows that the governor has a listening ear, and I believe through the establishment of this ministry, the riverine areas will be given a sense of belonging, and will equally experience a new lease of life if adequately funded,” Mulade said.

He said the riverine areas play host to mainly maritime, oil and gas production activities, which he said constitute the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy.

He, however, noted that the riverine areas lack many basic amenities despite the huge contributions to the development of the state and Nigeria at large.

“We have been crying for years over the deliberate neglect of the coastal dwellers after over seven decades of oil exploration activities, accentuated by the lopsided distribution of socio-economic development,” he added.

Chief Mulade also noted that while the move was commendable, he was still bothered about the prospect of the ministry in terms of its permanence as a statutory agency backed by law.

He therefore appealed to the Oborevwori-led government to send an executive bill to the State House of Assembly to make the Ministry of Riverine Infrastructure a statutory institution to help guarantee its existence beyond his administration and give more assurance to stakeholders that their welfare is paramount to the government.

He noted that the infrastructural deficit in the riverine areas of Delta State might not be totally addressed within a few years due to the difficult terrain of the coastal areas that will attract heavy funding to implement viable projects.

The Ijaw-born development and peace advocate  strongly appealed to Governor Oborevwori to consider the Ministry of Riverine Infrastructure as a development priority that requires adequate funding to achieve its purpose of creation, devoid of politics.

Delta Chieftain Tasks PDP Not to Allow APC Return to Power in 2027 /2024/08/18/delta-chieftain-tasks-pdp-not-to-allow-apc-return-to-power-in-2027/ /2024/08/18/delta-chieftain-tasks-pdp-not-to-allow-apc-return-to-power-in-2027/#respond Sun, 18 Aug 2024 10:01:00 +0000 /?p=1004773

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, Chief Sunny Onuesoke, has urged the major opposition party to ensure that the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not return to power in 2027.
The former governorship aspirant affirmed that the PDP has made significant preparations for the 2027 general election to reclaim power from the APC.
He explained that the current poor administration of the APC has resulted in acute hunger, inflation, and the continuous devaluation of the naira compared to the 16 years of PDP governance.
Onuesoke made this statement while responding to questions from journalists about the PDP’s position in 2027.
He noted that Nigerians have experienced both the PDP and APC, and have discovered that the opposition party is far superior to the ruling party in terms of achievements and a human-centered approach to governance.
He explained that the PDP can take pride in its 16 years of nurturing democracy, ensuring freedom of speech, protest, and association—freedoms he argued are currently lacking under APC leadership.
“The social media was unfettered, and Nigerians enjoyed the maximum freedom. The PDP also nurtured the economy to a six per cent annual growth rate, especially after the significant debt relief effort,” Onuesoke said.
“Moreover, many now enjoy mobile phones, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc., all of which emerged under the PDP government. Let us attempt to list the achievements of the APC government since it took over. It is marked by hunger, intimidation, suppression of media and protesters, inflation, and insecurity.
“They have spent only one-third of the time the PDP was in power. This is why I am optimistic that the PDP is the party for national harmony, freedom, and economic development,” he stated.
Onuesoke, who challenged the APC to name one sector they have developed since assuming power, said the PDP grew the GDP from $59 billion to $565 billion in 16 years, while Nigeria is sinking deeper into financial trouble and accumulating more debt under the current APC administration.
“You can count the number of industries the PDP improved in 16 years – banking, television, entertainment, telecom, insurance, and the internet all grew significantly under the PDP. Name one sector the APC has developed,” he queried.
He also stated that the recent #EndBadGovernance protests have exposed the APC-led federal government’s lack of initiative in resolving the nation’s challenges, which were deliberately imposed on Nigerians by what he described as a “single bellicose statement.”
