President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated three Nigerian Navy Ships – NNS SHERE, NNS FARO, and NNS IKOGOSI, and three AW109 Trekker helicopters: 501, 502, and 503 into the Nigerian Navy fleet.

Tinubu, speaking at the inauguration yesterday in Lagos, said that the addition of the three Fast Patrol Boats and three maritime surveillance helicopters, affirmed the country’s commitment to securing its maritime domain.

The president was represented by the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle.

“The sea has remained a pillar of our nation’s economic prosperity, and for the past 69 years, the Nigerian Navy has stood as the guardian of this blue territory.
“These patrol ships and helicopters are force multipliers in our fight against piracy, oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes.

“This inauguration is therefore a reflection of our determination to empower our institutions and protect our resources,” he said.

Tinubu assured the navy that his government would continue to prioritise its needs, saying, “as a strong navy is the cornerstone of a secure and prosperous economy”.

He commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, for his leadership in ensuring that the Nigerian Navy had pursued fleet modernisation with vigour, bridging capability gaps, and restoring pride to the force.

“Today’s induction is a fruit of your strategic foresight, and I commend you, your team, and all partners who turned this vision into reality.

“I also commend the National Assembly for its partisan commitment to funding and oversight, which are instrumental to achieving this feat.

“Let us sustain this unity of purpose, for the sea does not distinguish between political lines; it demands our collective vigilance,” the president said.
Tinubu also appreciated the international allies and technical partners for their collaboration, which underscored a shared truth that maritime security “knows no borders.”

“Together, we are proving that the Gulf of Guinea’s safety is not Nigeria’s burden alone but a global imperative.

“To the officers and ratings who will crew the ships and operate the helicopters, as you operate these assets, remember that the weight of Nigeria’s aspirations rests on your shoulders.

“Let us envision the future they herald: a future where our waters are impervious to criminality; where fishermen cast their nets in peace; where global trade flows unhindered through our ports,” he said.

The president said that the Nigerian Navy remained the guardian of the blue economy and urged them to sail forth with courage and know that a grateful nation stood behind them.

Akpabio to Governors: Don’t Choose ‘Kneeling’ Loyalists as Successors /2025/06/01/akpabio-to-governors-dont-choose-kneeling-loyalists-as-successors/ /2025/06/01/akpabio-to-governors-dont-choose-kneeling-loyalists-as-successors/#respond Sun, 01 Jun 2025 04:58:59 +0000 /?p=1088494

The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has advised second-term governors to be circumspect in selecting their successors.

According to the Senate president, governors who settle for successors simply because they kneel before them might be setting themselves up for betrayal when they finally leave office.

The ex-Akwa Ibom State Governor stated this yesterday at the inauguration of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway’s first 30 kilometres in the Lekki area.

Akpabio stressed the place of vision in leadership, urging second-term governors, especially those in the All Progressives Congress (APC), to prioritise visionary leadership over patronising loyalty.

The event was attended by President Bola Tinubu; Works Minister Dave Umahi, as well as second-term governors including Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos).

Akpabio said: “We have a president who has both sight and vision. And this, for me, is something I must advise our governors, particularly those of them who are in their second term. Do not give power to anybody who is not looking for power.

“Don’t give power to anybody who is not prepared. Don’t go hiding in your heart that ‘this boy is very subservient; he is always kneeling when he is talking to me, and his wife is always rolling on the floor. I think I should make this one the governor.’

“If you do that, you are giving power to somebody who is not prepared for governance, and they will disappoint you. This is where betrayals normally start. I am just trying to give some advice.

“For the progressive governors, I believe that all of you are doing well because you are being led by a man who has both sight and vision.”

LASG Seeks Strategic Partnership with Foreign Entities Over Coastal Erosion /2025/05/20/lasg-seeks-strategic-partnership-with-foreign-entities-over-coastal-erosion/ /2025/05/20/lasg-seeks-strategic-partnership-with-foreign-entities-over-coastal-erosion/#respond Tue, 20 May 2025 02:15:44 +0000 /?p=1084688

•Intervention to cost over N3trillion

•Fixes 1,163 deplorable roads in two years, secures $22m for fibre installations

Segun James

To address the growing threat to its coastal areas due to erosion, the Lagos State Government, LASG, has announced plans to deploy ground technology to battle the menace.

The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Hon. Ekundayo Alebiosu, who announced this yesterday, revealed the government has embarked on a strategic working visit to the Kingdom of Netherland to explore international best practices and forge partnerships for sustainable coastal management.

In another development, LASG, through the state Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency, (LASIMRA) disclosed it has successfully intervened on 1,163 roads, covering approximately 78.42 km across various categories between 2023 and 2025.

Besides, the government also revealed it has secured foreign direct investment of $22 million to roll out quality fibre installations across the metropolis and reinforce its status as a growing digital hub.

Meanwhile, according to the state Waterfront Infrastructure Development boss, Alebiosu, a groyne is a rigid hydraulic structure built from an ocean shore or riverbank that interrupts water flow and limits the movement of sediment. The technology has been effectively used to arrest coastal erosion and stabilize beaches in several parts of the world, including the Netherlands.

His words: “Though Lagos State has already begun implementing this technology, the sheer scale of the challenge to stretch the usage along the 180km stretch of shoreline presents a significant financial burden. It costs a huge amount to construct a single groyne, and with a targeted 180km coastal stretch, the projected cost exceeds N3 trillion, a figure that makes it clear that strategic collaboration is required.

“This is not just a Lagos problem, it is a national environmental and economic challenge. If we are serious about preserving our shoreline, preventing further erosion, and protecting coastal communities, then a robust partnership with the federal government and the private sector is not just desirable, it is absolutely necessary.”

The Commissioner described the Netherlands, renowned for its pioneering coastal engineering solutions, as a perfect case study for the state government’s delegation. The Dutch model, which integrates groynes, sand nourishment, and nature-based solutions, provided insights into how sustainable and economically viable approaches can be adapted to suit local conditions in Lagos.

He emphasised that the Lagos State Government is actively pursuing a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework to finance and implement large-scale groyne deployment and coastal protection infrastructure.

“This initiative also aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s broader agenda to secure lives, protect public and private assets, and unlock the economic potential of Lagos’ vast waterfronts.

“We cannot afford to delay. Entire communities are at risk, and if left unchecked, the consequences of coastal erosion could be devastating, not only to the environment but also to livelihoods and investments across our coastal zones,” he said.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working with international partners, federal agencies, and private investors to deliver long-term, climate-resilient solutions that will preserve the waterfronts for Lagosians.

Meanwhile, on his part, the Special Adviser to the Governor, Office of Infrastructure, Engineer Femi Daramola, and Special Adviser, Office of Works, Dr. Adekunle Olayinka, revealed these on Monday, during the on-going ministerial press briefing to give scorecard of the offices and commemorate the second-year of the second term administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, held at Alausa, Ikeja.

According to Daramola, “Over the past year, the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency, LASIMRA, has recorded significant progress in strengthening communication infrastructure and regulatory efficiency across the state.

“A standout achievement, increase in revenue generation, made possible through improved permit processing, stakeholder compliance and the introduction of digital workflow systems that have enhanced transparency and operational speed.

“To address the growing demand for reliable connectivity, the State has advanced its investment in broadband infrastructure.

“An additional 2,700km of fibre duct installations is underway, complementing the 3,000km previously delivered. Furthermore, LASIMRA secured foreign direct investment of $22 million toward the rollout of quality fibre installations, reinforcing Lagos’ status as a growing digital hub.

“The deployment of a Geographic Information System (GIS) to map and monitor fibre routes, masts, and towers has improved planning and responsiveness across the telecoms landscape.

“Alongside this, the Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) Law is now in full implementation, offering greater protection for critical infrastructure.

“Regular monitoring and enforcement exercises, a comprehensive infrastructure audit and enhanced collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have all contributed to improved compliance and service quality.

“From the inception of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat administration, the THEMES and THEMES+ Agenda has served as a blueprint and a call to transformative action.

“Under the Pillar “T” – Traffic Management and Transportation, the Office of Infrastructure has taken bold and strategic steps to improve road connectivity, expand access and elevate infrastructure delivery standards.

“From Year 2019 to 2023, the State Government successfully completed 171 roads translating to 177.40km across the state – a clear demonstration of sustained focus and delivery standards.

“Despite global and national economic challenges, particularly from May 2024 to date, the time of infrastructure delivery has remained steady.

“From Year 2023 till date, we have completed 61 roads translating to 56.52km – each one targeted to enhance connectivity within communities and ease of movement across local government areas.

“Since our last engagement, the Administration of Mr. Governor; Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and the Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat has recorded visible and measurable progress in the delivery of road and bridge infrastructure.

“A total of 33 strategic roads totaling 36.89km have been commissioned across the state, with many more completed and currently awaiting formal commissioning. In addition, a number of projects are at advanced stages of completion and steadily approaching readiness for public use.

“LASIMRA also deepened engagement with stakeholders through forums, workshops and feedback mechanisms that foster transparency and joint problem-solving.

“Together, these interventions reflect a strategic approach to building a future-ready digital infrastructure for Lagos, aligned with the THEMES+ Agenda and supporting the State’s long-term vision of connectivity, innovation and inclusive growth.

“It is imperative to mention that LSPWC has evolved from routine maintenance into full-scale road construction.

“Between May 2023 till date, the Corporation has successfully intervened on 1,163 roads, covering approximately 78.42 km across various categories including palliative works, damaged road furniture, routine pothole repairs, hydraulic desilting and major reconstruction on strategic roads, delivering projects such as:Abudu Smith Street, Victoria Island, Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road, Agege, among others.

“Beyond roadworks, the Corporation has also undertaken interventions on essential road furniture, including: Reinstating some missing manhole covers across the State’s right-of-ways Repairing and reinstating pedestrian bridge furniture such as handrails and danpalon sheets at Falomo Bridge, Ojodu Berger, and the 7Up Motorways.”

Further according to Daramola: “Theft and vandalism of public infrastructure are criminal offences and offenders will be prosecuted.’

“To enhance infrastructure durability and reduce vulnerability to tampering, we have commenced the use of composite materials for manhole covers and handrails, making them less prone to theft and better suited for long-term resilience.

“As Lagos continues to expand, the demand for high-quality infrastructure has grown in parallel with global economic shifts.

“The infrastructural deficit required to position Lagos as a true 21st-century megacity remains enormous, reflecting both the scale of growth and the complexity of urban needs.

“Although the cost of infrastructure delivery has risen due to inflation, foreign exchange volatility and increases in material prices, the state government has responded with strategic discipline and innovation. Instead of allowing funding pressures to affect momentum, the administration has implemented more efficient delivery models.

“The 2025 budgetary allocation reflects a deeper financial commitment and also a clear focus on achieving more with the available funding.

“These measures ensure that every investment contributes meaningfully to the development of resilient, inclusive and future-ready infrastructure in support of the Greater Lagos vision.”

Lagos Revenue Rises by 45% to N1.3trn in 2024 /2025/05/13/lagos-revenue-rises-by-45-to-n1-3trn-in-2024/ /2025/05/13/lagos-revenue-rises-by-45-to-n1-3trn-in-2024/#respond Tue, 13 May 2025 03:51:57 +0000 /?p=1082479

•To convert idle assets to liquidity, fund infrastructure development, says finance commissioner

Segun James

Lagos State Commissioner for Finance, Abayomi Oluyomi, has disclosed that the State recorded a significant growth in its revenue which rose by 45 percent to N1.3 trillion in 2024, compared with the N895 billion recorded in 2023.

Abayomi disclosed this while giving a report at the annual ministerial briefing on the activities of his ministry between 2024 and 2025, to mark the second year of the second term of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat’s administration.

The Commissioner also said N14 billion was generated from Land Use Charge in 2024, a 37 percent increase compared with 2023.

He said that local rating agencies had rated the State at A1 + while the Fitch Ratings put the State at AAA

He further said 800,000 properties in the State are on the State government’s database, but lamented that several property owners were owing the State property tax.

He explained: “Driven by strategic reforms and innovative financial practices, Lagos State has continued to set the pace in revenue generation. We closed 2024 with a record-breaking N1.3 trillion, a significant jump from the N895 billion generated in the previous year, representing a 45 percent increase.”

Oluyomi put the State’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at $259 billion, which makes it to remain not just Nigeria’s economic hub, but Africa’s largest sub-national economy.

On the debt standing of the State, Abayomi said the state’s debt-service-to-revenue ratio of 19.2 percent was the lowest in the country, while the State recorded a total-debt-to-GDP ratio of 3.83 percent and a total-debt-to-revenue ratio of 172 percent in 2024.

As a way of generating more revenue, the commissioner said the government would convert its N3 billion worth of property lying idle into money money-making investment.

He added that N67.9 billion was paid to 20,956 retirees between 2024 and 2025, while N290.43 million was received from insurers for damages to public infrastructure.

Abayomi noted that out of the three million tax payers on the state’s database, only 700,000 Lagosians pay tax.

He urged Lagosians to pay their taxes, adding that the State government was going to use creative ways to generate more money and ensure more Lagosians pay tax.

He said in 2025, the State would launch the Lagos State Economic Summit and Lagos State Sovereign Wealth Fund.

Lagos State Subsidised Public Transportation by N14.9bn in 6 Years /2025/04/23/lagos-state-subsidised-public-transportation-by-n14-9bn-in-6-years/ /2025/04/23/lagos-state-subsidised-public-transportation-by-n14-9bn-in-6-years/#respond Wed, 23 Apr 2025 02:53:51 +0000 /?p=1076674

•60m passengers moved by transport system since inauguration  •Marina-Mile-2 Blue Rail Line moved 2 million passengers

•Construction of Green Rail Line to kick-off 2025

Segun James

Lagos State Government said the state-owned transport system moved over 60 million passengers in six years, and revealed that the state had subsidised public transport fare by N14.9 billion within the same period.

The government said the Marina-Mile-2 Blue Rail line had, since inception, transported more than two million passengers.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made the disclosures at the 2025 press briefing on the scorecard of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration in the last one year, held in Alausa, Ikeja.

Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL) was established by the state government to save commuters’ time and money and enhance socioeconomic development of the state.

Osiyemi said, “LBSL has moved a total of 60,882,000 passengers from May 2019 till February 2025. LBSL currently moves over 42,266 passengers daily with an average of 1,000 bus trips per day.

“LBSL average fare for February was N542.66 while informal public transport fare was N1,097.73.

“Since inception, the LBSL average fare has been N261.67 cheaper than the average fares in Lagos. LBSL has implicitly subsidised fares for the Lagosians transported to an estimated sum of N14.9 billion.”

The commissioner further explained, “LBSL Driving School produced an additional 144 drivers to make a total of 3,537 certified high-capacity bus drivers as of 18th March 2025.”

He added, “Public transport is safer than private cars in terms of accident rates and severity. Public transport enhances the overall safety and security of passengers. Public transport moves more people with fewer vehicles.”

Osiyemi also said public transportation “reduces congestion – public transport reduces traffic congestion and travel time”.

He stated that public transport saved energy, as one bus could replace up to 40 cars, and had less fuel consumption, and reduced emission up to 95 per cent.

LBSL was established to provide a modern, safe, secure, convenient and reliable bus transportation system that integrates with other modes of public transport within the state to deliver a socially inclusive service that is affordable and accessible to all.

The appointed State Bus Operator responsible for upholding standards set by the regulator, Lagos Area Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA), serves as the benchmark to other operators.

According to Osiyemi, “Ridership of LBSL has moved a total of 60,882,000 passengers from May 2019 till February 2025.

“LBSL currently moves over 42,266 passengers daily with an average of 1,000 bus trips per day.

“On affordability,  LBSL average fare for February was N542.66, while informal public transport fare was N1,097.73.

“Since inception, the LBSL average fare has been N261.67 cheaper than the average fares in Lagos.

“LBSL has implicitly subsidised fares for the Lagosians transported to an estimated sum of N14.9 billion.

“LBSL driving school has produced an additional 144 drivers to make a total of 3,537 certified high-capacity bus drivers as of 18th March 2025.”

On the electric light rail mass transit with regard to blue line ridership, the commissioner explained that the first phase had five stations and 13 kilometres of track: Marina to Mile 2.

Osiyemi explained, “The five stations already operational are Marina, National Theatre, Iganmu, Alaba, Mile 2

“The first phase has already commenced full commercial passenger operation and has transported more than two million passengers to date.

“The full line is set to be 27 kilometres: Marina to Okokomaiko. Construction of phase 2 from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko started in December 2023.

“Expected to carry 500,000 passengers a day, the Lagos State Government has acquired additional three brand new rolling stock.”

The red line project is a 37-kilometre rail route from Marina, via Iddo, to Agbado along the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Right of Way (RoW), run via Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju and Agbado, with overpass at Yaba, Oyingbo, Mushin, Ikeja.

Speaking on the project, Osiyemi said, “Phase1 (Oyingbo to Agbado): construction and operation of railway systems from Oyingbo to Agbado, sharing the track of NRC standard gauge from Ebute Metta to Agbado (27Km).

“Phase 1 already commenced full commercial passenger operations. Phase 2 (Oyingbo to National Theatre) – contract for the construction of civil work awarded to CCECC on February 29, 2024. The state government has also acquired of additional rolling stock.”

On the upcoming rail projects, the commissioner added that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the proposed Green Line had been signed with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to develop the Line Metro Project to further expand the state’s public transportation network.

Osiyemi disclosed, “The construction of the green line project is expected to kick off later this year, 2025.”

The Green Line is a 68-kilometre rail project that will run from Marina to Lekki Free Zone Purple Line Metro Project.

The commissioner stated, “Preliminary discussions has commenced on the 57-kilometre Purple Line that will traverse from Redemption Camp on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to Ojo connecting Volkswagen on Lagos Badagry Expressway.”

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on industry experts and stakeholders in Nigeria’s power sector to leverage on the unbundling of the sector by the federal government.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Lagos Energy Summit,  themed: ‘’Journey to Energy for All’’, the governor emphasised that unbundling holds the key to delivering sustainable, reliable, and affordable electricity to Nigerians.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the critical role energy plays in economic growth and development, stressing that reforming the sector is essential for industrialisation and improved quality of life.

Also, a former Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, who was guest speaker at the event, echoed the governor’s sentiments, noting that decentralising power generation and distribution allows for increased efficiency, competition, and innovation.

He urged stakeholders to harness emerging technologies and investment opportunities to drive long-term solutions for Nigeria’s energy challenges.

Both leaders reiterated the need for collaborative efforts across government, private sector, and regulatory bodies to ensure that reforms translate into real benefits for the populace.

The former minister commended Sanwo-Olu for his earlier steps on electricity sustainability from the Bola Tinubu administration, stating that 80 million Nigerians lack electricity supply and urged governments at all levels to take decisive actions to address the gap.

“In the next 20 years, natural gas will be the fuel to power electricity with about 210 trillion cubic feet of gas,” he stated.

In his address, the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, said the summit would lay the foundation for a sustainable future that would make the city conducive for all.

He held that the state government would continue to engage the audience and carry out quality research to shape the future that would make Lagos a more livable place to activate innovations and ideas.

Ogunleye also said the event would be a key e-mobility platform to have a root for the Lagos gas master plan, make the city a choice destination for everyone to live their dreams and partner with the private sector while creating a community of interest across the divide.

•Trump names Boulos special envoy to DRC in drive for minerals deal

Segun James with Agency report

The United States is open to exploring critical minerals partnerships with Congo, the State Department said in a statement to Reuters on Sunday, after a Congolese senator contacted U.S. officials to pitch a minerals-for-security deal.

Democratic Republic of Congo, which is rich in cobalt, lithium and uranium among other minerals, has been fighting Rwanda-backed M23 rebels who have seized swathes of its territory this year.

Talk of a deal with the U.S. – which is also in discussions with Ukraine over a minerals pact – has circulated in Kinshasa for weeks.

“The United States is open to discussing partnerships in this sector that are aligned with the Trump Administration’s America First Agenda,” a State Department spokesperson said, noting that Congo held “a significant share of the world’s critical minerals required for advanced technologies.”

The U.S. has worked “to boost U.S. private sector investment in the DRC to develop mining resources in a responsible and transparent manner,” the spokesperson said.

Kinshasa has not publicly detailed a proposal, instead saying it is seeking diversified partnerships.

“There is a desire for us to diversify our partners,” Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya said last week, adding there were “daily exchanges” between Congo and the U.S.

“If today American investors are interested in coming to the DRC, obviously they will find space … DRC has reserves that are available and it would also be good if American capital could invest here,” he said.

Regional Stability

Andre Wameso, deputy chief of staff to Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, travelled to Washington earlier this month for talks on a partnership, two sources told Reuters.

On February 21, a lobbyist representing the Congolese Senator Pierre Kanda Kalambayi sent letters to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other American officials inviting U.S. investment in Congo’s vast mineral resources in exchange for helping to reinforce “regional stability”.

That initiative was not sanctioned by the broader Congolese government or presidency, according to two Congolese officials. There are, however, several initiatives underway, albeit in nascent stages, sources from Congo’s presidency, its ministry of mines, and from Washington told Reuters.

A Congolese delegation had been scheduled to meet with the House Foreign Affairs Committee on March 6, but cancelled the meeting at short notice, according to two sources.

Meanwhile, Us President, Donald Trump is poised to appoint Massad Boulos, a Lebanese-born businessman with deep ties to Nigeria, as his special envoy to the Great Lakes region in East Africa. This strategic move aligns with ongoing discussions between the United States and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) regarding access to critical minerals vital for advanced technologies.

Boulos, whose son Michael is married to Trump’s daughter Tiffany, was appointed as Trump’s senior adviser for Arab Affairs in December. Early in his career, he worked in his family’s Nigeria-based business, Boulos Enterprises Ltd., a major player in motor vehicle distribution. The company, which has operated in Nigeria for decades, specializes in assembling and distributing motorcycles, power bikes, and tricycles. It has played a significant role in Nigeria’s transportation sector, particularly in providing affordable mobility solutions to millions of Nigerians. Boulos has also been involved in the retail and real estate sectors in Nigeria, further solidifying his influence in West African business circles.

He is expected to receive security and diplomatic clearances soon and may visit Kinshasa, DRC’s capital, and Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, later this month.

Lagos Government Unveils Digital Malaria Eradication Programme /2025/03/05/lagos-government-unveils-digital-malaria-eradication-programme/ /2025/03/05/lagos-government-unveils-digital-malaria-eradication-programme/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2025 02:01:13 +0000 /?p=1062352

•Sanwo-Olu: Disease has robbed Lagos of productivity, resources

•State remains lowest burdened in malaria epidemic

Segun James in Lagos

Lagos State has transited to the most important stage in its rollback strategy against malaria – a killer disease that records 200,000 fatalities annually in Nigeria.

The state became the first sub-national in the country to launch the Pathway to Malaria Pre-Elimination and Digitisation Programme – an initiative aimed at reducing the malaria burden through digital innovation and strengthened public-private sector collaboration.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu launched the tech-driven health initiative being supported by the World Bank, World Health Organization (WHO), Maisha Meds and other multilateral partners.

The project would move Lagos towards malaria pre-elimination by enhancing diagnostic accuracy, improving case management and linking patients to social health insurance schemes.

Lagos became the first state to transition to the digitised system of malaria prevention, as the World Bank-funded Immunization Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) draws to an end by December 2025.

Nigeria is said to have the highest malaria burden in the world, accounting for 27 per cent of the global cases and 200,000 deaths annually, with most of the fatalities reported among children.

Lagos remains the lowest malaria burden, despite its population. The State currently has 2.6 per cent burden, falling within the low transmission bracket among the 28 sub nationals where the IMPACT project is being undertaken.

In spite of this progress, Lagos still records 900,000 cases annually, needing more strategic response from the state to sustain its rollback.

Sanwo-Olu, while unveiling the programme, described malaria as a “socio-economic burden” that drained families’ household income, while robbing communities of productivity.

For the state, the governor said the programme represented hope rooted in innovation, collaboration and determination, stressing that the success of the project would help Lagos reclaim billions lost annually to the disease.

He said: “For many households with modest incomes in Lagos, malaria treatment can consume up to three per cent of monthly earnings. This financial strain often forces families to make heartbreaking choices between healthcare and other basic needs like food or education.

“The economic impact extends beyond households, with businesses suffering absenteeism, schools recording lower attendance and our healthcare system bearing the weight of preventable cases.

“Malaria is more than a disease; it is a socio-economic burden that has held back individuals, families, and communities for far too long. It robs us of our productivity and drains household incomes.

“Today, we are changing this narrative by leveraging digital tools that will ensure that malaria cases are tracked in real time. This programme represents hope rooted in innovation, collaboration and determination. The eradication of malaria is not just a health goal; it is an economic imperative.”

Sanwo-Olu said the benefits of eradicating malaria in the State would go beyond health success, noting that a malaria-free Lagos would not only raise productivity and enhance quality of life, it would also bring about better education outcomes.

The governor said the objectives were ambitious but achievable. The efforts, he said, required government agencies, healthcare providers, community leaders, development partners, and residents to work together.

He said tracking must be done on monthly basis to ensure consistent monitoring of the progress

“This vision is ambitious but achievable. It requires all stakeholders to work together with unwavering resolve. Success will not come overnight, but with sustained effort and collective action, we will prevail.

“This effort reaffirms our commitment to safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of every Lagosian,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Isiak Salako, observed that Lagos had the most comprehensive implementation strategy to roll back malaria, noting that the state had shown the tendency to achieve total elimination.

He said the Federal Government had supported efforts by sub nationals, taking steps to reverse the trend of malaria epidemic.

He assured that the change made by the United States government in funding global health care would not adversely impact the progress recorded by Nigeria to rid the country of malaria.

Lagos Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said Lagos, over the last 15 years, had been winning the war against malaria due to improved diagnosis, immunisation and effective treatments.

He said: “Due to intense programmatic work, malaria prevalence in Lagos has declined from 15 per cent in 2010 to 10 per cent in 2015 and now 2.6 per cent in 2025. These efforts have made Lagos fall into the low transmission category.

“Despite this, malaria remains a major public health issue in Lagos with around 900,000 cases recorded per annum. Over 50 per cent of outpatient visits in public health facilities are due to febrile illnesses presumed to be malaria.”

Stressing on the strategy being implemented by the state government to drive malaria pre-elimination, Prof. Abayomi said with a strong political will and innovative infrastructural transformation, Lagos would push forward its responses against malaria elimination.

He added that Lagos would have a unique opportunity to achieve its malaria prevention objectives with human resource strategy, digital interventions, health financing through insurance and steadfast partners in donor and private sector space.

Don’t Re-enact Collapse of First, Second Republics, Bode George Warns Tinubu /2025/03/05/dont-re-enact-collapse-of-first-second-republics-bode-george-warns-tinubu/ /2025/03/05/dont-re-enact-collapse-of-first-second-republics-bode-george-warns-tinubu/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:50:14 +0000 /?p=1062366

•Declares Nigeria becoming an embarrassment in comity of nations on his watch

•Says current political situation portends looming darkness

Segun James

Former Deputy National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, yesterday, warned President Bola Tinubu not to allow a re-enactment of the events that led to the collapse of the First and Second Republics with some of the actions of his government.

George stated that the country was becoming an embarrassment in the comity of nations due to some of the president’s actions, which defied logic.

He warned the president not to allow despotic and unpatriotic elements to destroy the present democratic process, adding that the current political situation in the country portends a looming darkness.

George, in an open letter to the president, titled, “From Osun to Lagos and Rivers: Darkness Looms,” said the council crisis in Osun State a few weeks ago, which led to killings, was not only illogical but heartless.

He stated, “We now have a situation in which some people interpret the law to suit their selfish interests. What happened in Osun is a straightforward case but government officials at the federal level complicated the situation with unnecessary interpretation of the law.

“In Nigeria, the law is being turned upside down and this is dangerous to our democracy. Why are people so desperate? What exactly is the issue? Can’t we do something with decorum?

“Some of us are worried because we lived through what happened in the First Republic, which started in 1962, and what happened in the Second Republic, which started in 1983. Tinubu should not allow a re-enactment of the collapse of these Republics.

“Look at what is happening in the Lagos State House of Assembly.  It is absolute lunacy. Thirty-six out of 40 members impeached Mudashiru Obasa and since then, we have witnessed this embarrassing show of shame.

“To say the return of Obasa as Speaker on Monday is shocking is an understatement. It is an international embarrassment and the joke is on the presidency.

“Obasa was impeached on January 13 and since then, agents of darkness turned the Assembly to a theatre of war. What sort of democracy is this?

“Lawmakers have the powers to choose their leaders but since they took that decision, it has been one crisis after the other, fuelled by extraneous forces. Why should Nigeria and Nigerians be embarrassed like this globally? What is our offence?

“Why should this embarrassing and disgraceful behaviour be allowed by the powers that be in Abuja? Why should the Centre of Excellence be turned to Centre of Confusion?”

George added, “Look at Rivers, the economic life wire of this country. The whole thing is a total mess. What sort of judgement will subject people to misery, extreme pain, wretchedness, distress and unhappiness of no federal allocation, no salary, no infrastructure, no food and other essentials of life?

“I am not a lawyer but I see the verdict as disheartening. This can cause problems for the country. That judgement is not fair to the people of Rivers State.

“I just pray that some elements will not start bursting oil pipelines, which may eventually affect the country’s revenue. The people are hungry and angry. Tinubu and other APC chiefs desperate to capture all states should have a rethink.”

The PDP chieftain also stated, “In the country today, we have deficits in areas of democracy and rule of law. That is why everything is upside down. Also, electoral irregularities, such as intimidation and vote-buying, continue to be widespread.

“These became glaring during the Edo and Ondo governorship elections in September and November, 2024, when vote buying was done in the open.”

George said, “The security situation has also deteriorated. Youth Corps members, serving their fatherland are now being abducted by terrorists. Terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and communal clashes have become the order of the day.

“Instead of the president to tackle these vices, APC members are busy sowing seeds of crises all over the country. This is the time to say enough is enough.

“Lagos is the largest electoral state in Nigeria, followed by Kano and Rivers. If we deliberately make two of the three states to be unstable, what does that portend for Nigeria?

“I want to remind all Nigerians, especially those in government, that GOODNESS is an investment that will never fail. Whatever good you do will also have a reward. Where there is love, there is no need for perfection. I wish Nigeria and Nigerians the very best every time.”

Peace Returns to Lagos, Obasa in Dramatic Return to Speakership /2025/03/04/peace-returns-to-lagos-obasa-in-dramatic-return-to-speakership/ /2025/03/04/peace-returns-to-lagos-obasa-in-dramatic-return-to-speakership/#respond Tue, 04 Mar 2025 02:27:03 +0000 /?p=1062011

•Meranda resigns, back in office as Deputy Speaker

•Lawmakers emotional, cry as they accept ex-female leader’s resignation

•How Tinubu stood his ground against Obasa’s removal

•President’s choice thanks party leaders who intervened in his favour

Segun James

Peace returned to the Lagos House of Assembly yesterday, as Mr. Mudashiru Obasa resumed as Speaker in a dramatic turn of events, allegedly, directed by President Bola Tinubu, who is also national leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), bringing the Assembly crisis to an unexpected end.

The lawmakers, who had orchestrated Obasa’s removal on January 13, reluctantly, amid tears, accepted the resignation of their preferred speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, who was also returned to her former position as Deputy Speaker.

Hon. Sanni Okanlawon equally resigned as Deputy Chief Whip, while Hon. Setonji David resigned as Chief Whip.

David was re-elected as Deputy Chief Whip after his nomination by Hon. Kehinde Joseph, while Hon. Richard Kasunmu retuned as Deputy Majority Leader. Hon. Adewale Temitope retained the position of Majority Leader.

Similarly, the former Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojeed Fatai, resigned and was elected as Chief Whip.

With this development, Meranda served as Speaker for 49 days before bowing to the supremacy of the ruling APC.

Obasa had in a successful counter-push upturned the election of Meranda, the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, albeit with the support of Tinubu, who deployed security and other institutions of state in his support.

The Assembly had been engulfed in a leadership crisis since January 13, when Obasa was removed as Speaker, a move that did not have the support of Tinubu.

The latest development followed a strategic meeting of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the powerful group of political leaders and elders of APC in the state, with members of the Assembly on Sunday.

It was gathered that after the marathon meeting, Obasa had to beg for his return and promised to turn over a new leaf.

But in all the meetings, the interest of the president, who was said to have insisted on Obasa as Speaker, no matter what anyone thought or what the law stipulated, remained the key consideration.

Sources claimed that the president considered the removal of Obasa as a coup against him and had told the party leaders at some point that the punishment for coup was “death”.

Ƶ gathered from reliable sources that the president took the issue so personal that he refused to see Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu or talk to him, refusing to at least give the governor the privilege of fair hearing or the benefit of the doubt.

All Tinubu was interested in, one of the sources added, was an indictment of Sanwo-Olu, a situation that would give him the leeway to move in against the governor and do exactly what many believe he had always wanted to do to the second term governor.

Unfortunately, a source stated, a major damage had been done across the board to all parties, including the president, the governor and the party itself, and things could never be the same again.

The source, a member of the GAC, was disappointed in Tinubu’s arrogance with power

The president was alleged to have squealed that Obasa would never resign, adding that the inherent animosity between him and other lawmakers, as well as the governor, would ultimately undo the party in the state.

However, at plenary yesterday, the lawmakers took turns to eulogise Meranda’s good qualities.

Moving the motion under Matters of Public Importance, Hon. Aro Moshood said, “Today, I stand in the house with a deep respect of leadership. Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, I want to appreciate your leadership style since you have started piloting the affairs of the house.

“Madam Speaker, under your leadership, we have witnessed a new focus, presiding with passion. You have been a source of inspiration to us. Thank you, may God bless you.”

Obasa, expressed his gratitude to Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Olusegun Osoba, and the leaders of GAC for their support in facilitating his return.

The Assembly immediately after adjourned sine die.

Lagos Unites Lekki Economic Zone Stakeholders for Accelerated Growth /2025/02/26/lagos-unites-lekki-economic-zone-stakeholders-for-accelerated-growth/ /2025/02/26/lagos-unites-lekki-economic-zone-stakeholders-for-accelerated-growth/#respond Wed, 26 Feb 2025 03:16:27 +0000 /?p=1060186

•Introduces operation Quadrant Ignite to transform economic zone as Africa’s premier business destination

Segun James

Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment (MCCTI) yesterday brought together major drivers and stakeholders in the Lekki Economic Zone for collaboration towards accelerated development of the corridor.

The relations between the zones and enterprises became formalised with the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) by Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited – representing the Lagos State Government, Lekki Free Zone Development Company (LFZDC), Lagos Free Zone, Dangote Enterprise Zone, Alaro City, Lekki Ports and others at Alausa, Lagos.

The Commissioner for CCTI, Folashade Ambrose, described the occasion as historic as leaders of enterprises in Lekki Economic Zone rose above the walls of economic partitions and organisational divides, to collaborate and set off a transformational shift that would redefine business and investment landscape in the Zone.

Her words: “Today’s event marks a significant milestone in our collective desire to ignite the latent potentials of the Lekki Economic Zone, exploring its huge opportunities and accelerating its development with the entrance of additional investments.

“It is part of the broader plan to transform the region into an economic and industrial hub, catering to various sectors including manufacturing, real estate, trade, logistics, and services.

“The signed MoU reflects our concerted efforts to position Lagos as a key hub for trade and investment in West Africa, attracting both local and international businesses. The zone is expected to significantly impact the Lagos economy by creating a more diversified industrial base and offering numerous opportunities for businesses and investors.”

Speaking further, the Commissioner stressed that the initiative would allow stakeholders such as government agencies, businesses, and local communities to pool resources, share expertise, and collaborate on infrastructure development, leading to more effective and efficient use of resources.

“By working together, we will also create a conducive environment for investments, industrial growth, and job creation, driving the growth of both the Lekki Economic Zone and the broader Lagos economy.

“In addition, the partnership will lead to the development of world-class infrastructure, including transport systems, utilities, and communication networks, which will improve business operations and the quality of life for residents.

“It will also afford stakeholders from different sectors, including government and the enterprises, an opportunity to share risks associated with large-scale development projects, leading to minimised financial burden and making the projects more sustainable,” she said.

Ambrose affirmed the commitment of the State government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to continuously initiate strategies, facilitate ideas and sustain the drive to ensure Ease of Doing Ƶ environment that supports businesses prosperity and strengthens the economy.

“This collaboration will drive more cooperation and inclusion in many areas that will further strengthen the Lekki Economic Zone and make it more attractive to businesses and investors. “We strongly believe that by creating an enabling environment for business, the Lekki Economic Zone can attract both local and international investors, driving long-term economic growth.”

Describing the ceremony as epoch-making, Managing Director/CEO, LWIL, Adeniyi Akinlusi, remarked that the stakeholders’ collaboration would transform the Lekki Economic Zone considerably.

Managing Director/CEO, Lagos Free Zone, Adesuwa Ladoja, stated that the coming together of investors in the zone was a game changer for existing and potential investments in the corridor.

Meanwhile, as part of efforts to transform the LEZ into Africa’s premier destination for manufacturing, trade, and investment, the Lagos State Government has come up with an initiative tagged, ‘Operation Quadrant Ignite (OQI)’ aimed to have more robust infrastructure.

Ambrose who made the disclosure at Lagos Design Week 2025, Design and Innovation Exhibition, “The Roadmap to Industrialisation,” pointed out that Lekki had long been envisioned as the industrial nerve center of Lagos, and through OQI, the vision is positioned into reality.

She pointed out that the theme was a clarion call, an urgent appeal for strategic partnerships, bold investments, and unwavering commitment to unlocking the immense potential of Lagos State as Africa’s foremost industrial and economic powerhouse.

The Commissioner noted under the leadership of Sanwo-Olu the Lagos GDP has increased from N27 trillion to N41 trillion within four years, adding that as part of the strategy to propel Lagos into a new era of industrial growth, the State through the MCCTI was preparing to launch a comprehensive industrial policy that would serve as a transformative guide for the state’s economic development.

The government therefore convened a Consultative and Validation Exercise on February 10, 2025, bringing together captains of industry, policymakers, and thought leaders to contribute their expertise and insights.

The forum was instrumental in ensuring that the policy is not just a government document but a living framework shaped by those at the forefront of industrialisation, investment, and commerce.

In her keynote address, the Commissioner noted, “The Lagos State Industrial Policy (LSIP) 2025–2030,” was more than a vision, but also a structured and strategic roadmap designed to elevate Lagos into a globally competitive industrial hub.

“This policy is set to enhance infrastructure development by expanding industrial zones, strengthening transportation networks, and ensuring a stable power supply that meets the state’s growing demand.

“It will also create a more seamless and efficient business environment by simplifying regulatory processes, eliminating bureaucratic hurdles, and fast-tracking approvals for industrial projects to attract both local and international investors,” she added.

In his comment, the moderator during the panelists’ session, Olamide Ogunlaja, reiterated that Nigeria has so much depended on oil for economic growth, saying, “the group has been oil sector and non-oil sector. All other sectors have been grouped as one.

“It is a shame because of the abundant talents we have in the country that have not been harnessed. We have young talents that can make contributions,” he added.

Chekwas Okorie to FG: Name INEC Headquarters After Prof Nwosu /2025/02/25/chekwas-okorie-to-fg-name-inec-headquarters-after-prof-nwosu/ /2025/02/25/chekwas-okorie-to-fg-name-inec-headquarters-after-prof-nwosu/#respond Tue, 25 Feb 2025 04:39:05 +0000 /?p=1059868

Segun James

The founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Chekwas Okorie, has pleaded with the federal government to name the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja after, Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who superintended the June 12, 1993 election, is still considered the best and fairest election in the history of the country.

According to Okorie, in a statement he personally signed, “it is sad that the most visibly unsung hero of the much-celebrated June 12, 1993 presidential election in Nigeria is Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the National Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) which later became INEC.

“Nigerians commended President Muhammadu Buhari for declaring June 12 as Democracy Day in the place of May 29. He also affirmed late Chief M.K.O Abiola, the winner of the June 12 presidential election, along with Alhaji Babagana Kingigbe as his running mate.

“The two were accordingly honored with the requisite national honors of GCFR and GCON, respectively.

“Regrettably, no mention was made of Professor Humphrey Nwosu in the honors list for the historic June 12 election. Professor Nwosu had long before President Buhari honored the June 12 heroes, written his book where he gave account of the true outcome of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, including the figures scored by Chief MKO Abiola the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, and Alhaji Bashir Tofa, the presidential candidate of the National Republican Convention, NRC, showing Chief Abiola’s resounding victory in that election.”

Okorie insisted the undisputed fact is that there would be no June 12 celebration in Nigeria without Professor Humphrey Nwosu.

“He stuck out his neck in the face of obvious threats to his life by a military junta determined to scuttle the election and announced the actual election results. This did not prevent General Ibrahim Babangida, the military President of Nigeria, from proceeding to annul the election.”

He stressed that “after more than three decades, General Ibrahim Babangida publicly presented his memoir in which he vindicated Professor Humphrey Nwosu. He even boasted that it was under his watch that Nigeria had the fairest and freest presidential election.

“Yet the architect of this unprecedented national feat remained unsung. The big question is, when will Nigeria have the good fortune to have the likes of Professor Humphrey Nwosu to preside over our Independent National Electoral Commission again?

“President Muhammadu Buhari has done his own bit by giving Nigeria a more acceptable Democracy Day, which is June 12, and honored late MKO Abiola as former President and a posthumous award of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR. The ball is now in the court of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give Professor Nwosu a befitting national honor.

“Unfortunately, Professor Humphrey Nwosu died recently and his burial program has been announced by his family.

“It is the expectation of Nigerians that President Tinubu should authorize a national burial for him. It will be to the credit of President Tinubu, the only true civilian to be elected President of Nigeria after President Shehu Shagari and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to approve the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to be named after Professor Humphrey Nwosu. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should seize the moment.”

The Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), a non-governmental organisation initiated by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, continues to present essential food items to vulnerable groups across the nation.

Senator Tinubu stated this in Benin, the Edo State capital, during the distribution of essential food items to vulnerable groups under the Food Outreach Programs of the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI under its Social Investment Scope.

Senator Tinubu said government will continue to pursue policies and programs aimed at making life better for Nigerians.

Represented by the Wife of the Vice President and National Vice Chairman of the RHI, Hajia Nana Shettima, the First Lady pointed out that the food supplies were made possible by an anonymous public-spirited company and also the Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa) who are committed to supplying food items on a monthly basis to RHI for onward distribution to Nigerians.

Her words: “I am pleased to share with you all that since inception in 2023, the Renewed Hope Initiative has made significant progress in our efforts to support our people, particularly women and youth, towards building a better life for their families.

“I want to assure you that there will be more activities this year under the five scopes of the RHI, that covers Agriculture, Education, Economic Empowerment, Health, and Social Investment.

“These programs aim to further compliment the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR”.

The First Lady through her representative appealed to beneficiaries not to sell the food items, as they are intended to support their families.

In his remarks, Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, expressed gratitude to the First Lady for her relentless efforts geared towards supporting vulnerable groups.

He acknowledged the role RHI is playing in meeting the needs of the citizens, pledging his government’s support to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and also the RHI, an Initiative of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

The Edo State RHI Coordinator, Mrs. Edesili Anani also assured that the food items will be distributed to the targeted beneficiaries in the state.

The Food Outreach Program of the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI under its Social Investment Scope was launched on the 8th of March 2024 in Abuja the Federal Capital Territory with the aim of providing essential food commodities to vulnerable groups and people with disabilities.

It would be recalled that in December, Elderly Citizens in Edo State also benefited from the RHI Elderly Citizens Support Program of the RHI where 250 elderly got two hundred and fifty naira (N250,000.00) each, various food items, in addition to free health checks.

The train of the Food Outreach Scheme of the RHI is expected to be in Kwara State next, followed by Kogi and Abia States for similar distribution.

Detty December: Lagos Shines Bright, Sets Heights for Tourism, Entertainment, Arts, Says Sanwo-Olu’s Aide /2025/01/21/detty-december-lagos-shines-bright-sets-heights-for-tourism-entertainment-arts-says-sanwo-olus-aide/ /2025/01/21/detty-december-lagos-shines-bright-sets-heights-for-tourism-entertainment-arts-says-sanwo-olus-aide/#respond Tue, 21 Jan 2025 04:25:18 +0000 /?p=1049614

•Generated over $71.6m in revenue from events

Segun James

Lagos State once again lived up to its billing as tourism and entertainment capital of Africa, with a notable December 2024 season, generating over $71.6 million in revenue across tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors.

During the season, tagged “Detty December,” hotels alone accounted for over $44 million, while short-let apartments contributed over $13 million, underscoring Lagos’ immense economic potential as a destination city.

Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, made the revelation at the weekend during the review of the “Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report,” with officials of Tantacom Experimental Projects and other stakeholders.

Aregbe, who also commended the report released recently by the MO Africa Consulting on the impressive millions of dollars’ revenues generated from the December season, said tourism remained a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State, with the “Ember” season playing a key role.

During the “Detty December,” Lagos hosted a wide array of spectacular events that drew massive crowds and highlighted Nigeria’s rich heritage, among which were the Mrs. Universe Africa event, Greater Lagos Fiesta, music concerts, fashion shows, cultural exhibitions, culinary events, Spotify Wrapped Concert, Lungu Boy Block Party, Rhythm Unplugged, Entertainment Week Lagos, Joeboy, The La Vida Experience, African Fashion Week, and Fashion Souk.

The season also drew locals and members of the Nigerian diaspora, popularly known as IJGBs (I Just Got Back), as well as international tourists who were eager to experience the energy and diversity that made Lagos a global cultural destination.

Beyond the economic benefits, “December in Lagos” has become a platform to celebrate Nigerian arts, culture, and music on a global stage. It fosters community spirit, strengthens ties with the diaspora, and reinforces Lagos as a destination of choice for cultural tourism.

Speaking on the success of the “Detty December,” Aregbe said the Sanwo-Olu administration was shaping a Lagos that blended tradition with creativity, creating unforgettable experiences for all. He stated that various activities held during the “Detty December” not only enriched the cultural landscape but also had a profound economic impact.

He said the progress recorded by the Lagos State government reflected the visionary leadership of Sanwo-Olu and the support of the deputy governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, stating that their dedication to fostering growth in tourism and culture laid the foundation for the achievements.

Aregbe said, “Tourism remains a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State, with the ‘Ember’ season playing a key role. This season represents a period of unity, vibrancy, and celebration, fuelled by the dynamic spirit of Lagosians.

“From enterprising artisans in local markets to creative entrepreneurs shaping the entertainment and tourism sectors, the resilience and ingenuity of Lagos people lie at the heart of its success. The participation of residents, alongside visitors from other states, has been fundamental in establishing Lagos as a cultural and tourism hub.

“As a government that listens and welcomes innovative ideas and collaborations, the insights from this season will be carefully studied, with key lessons factored into the 2025 Lagos Tourism is Rising campaign. As we reflect on these successes, we look forward to building on this momentum, creating more opportunities for Lagosians, and ensuring our city.

“As Lagos looks ahead to 2025 with the ‘Lagos Tourism is Rising’ campaign, the goal remains clear: to build on this momentum, celebrate our cultural richness, and solidify Lagos as a beacon of tourism, culture, and economic excellence.”

Aregbe expressed gratitude to the hospitable people of Lagos, industry stakeholders, performers, and artisans whose creativity and participation were instrumental in the success of “Detty December” and instrumental in making Lagos the tourism and entertainment capital of Africa.

He added that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture played a pivotal role in ensuring the season’s success.

•Lawmakers say they’ve had enough of him

•His deputy, Moji Meranda, takes over

•Assembly clerk suspended, replaced in acting capacity

Segun James

In a well-executed civilian coup, some members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, numbering 32, yesterday, impeached the speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, while he was in transit from faraway Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States.

The lawmakers claimed they had had enough of Obasa and simply decided to try someone else, saying change is the only thing that is constant.

Upon removal of Obasa, who had been Speaker since 2015, they promptly replaced him with his deputy, Hon Mojisola Meranda.

Deputy Chief Whip of the Assembly, Hon. Fatai Mojeed, was also elected the new Deputy Speaker.

All existing structures in the legislature, including the standing committees, were equally dissolved.

Following in the same wind of change, the Assembly suspended its Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, and replaced him with Mr. Abubakar Ottun, in acting capacity.

The latest development came a few weeks after Obasa was alleged to have displayed open disrespect for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the 2025 budget presentation by the governor.

The impeached speaker had also seized the opportunity to hint at his own political plans, including a possible shot at the governorship.

Although the accusations levelled against Obasa bordered on corruption, the move to impeach him had been on the cards for some months following his battle with Sanwo-Olu.

Obasa had been embroiled in a series of controversies concerning his handling of the Assembly and the finances of the state legislature.

The impeachment of the longest serving Speaker of the Assembly, who was first elected in 2015, happened during an emergency plenary over alleged misappropriation of funds and lack of transparency in the management of the Assembly.

The motion to remove him was moved under Matter of Urgent Public Importance by Hon. Femi Saheed.

Saheed stated, “In line with provisions of section 92(2) (C) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Obasa is accused of gross misconduct and poor leadership, which included perpetual lateness to legislative sessions and meetings, high-handedness and lack of regard for honourable members, gross abuse of office and privileges, intimidation and oppression of honourable members by inciting members against one another, amongst others.”

Saheed alleged that Obasa also “practices an authoritarian and undemocratic leadership style in discharging his duties,” and ought to be removed.

Following the adoption of the motion, the impeachment was made by the 32 members through a voice vote.

Subsequently, Meranda emerged as new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, while Mojeed emerged Deputy Speaker.

Ƶ had exclusively reported that a prominent political leader in Lagos State, Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi, had reported Obasa to President Bola Tinubu while giving a situation report.

Olusi not only accused Obasa of being insubordinate to political leaders in the state, but also alleged that he had been rude to Sanwo-Olu, who had been tolerating him on account of his perceived closeness to Tinubu.

Obasa had recently been vocal on his ambition to be governor of Lagos State, and even declared that no one could stop him.

Since 2023, he had been at daggers-drawn with Sanwo-Olu over issues of political control. He refused to clear some nominees of the governor for the executive council until he was given two slots by the governor.

Every year, he had refused to attend the signing of the state’s appropriation bill, apparently, seeing it as beneath him. Also, he was said never to have attended events where the governor was present, and if he did, he had deliberately come late after the governor was seated, in blatant breach of protocol.

The lastest of such actions happened on Sunday, January 5th, during the state’s annual thanksgiving service at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan.

Obasa’s removal came after he allegedly oversaw the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for back-up vehicles for lawmakers, as well as other controversial activities.

Obasa, 52, was first elected Speaker on June 8, 2015, resuming office alongside former governor, Akinwunmi Ambode. He was the second speaker of the Lagos Assembly to be impeached since the inception of the Fourth Republic 1999, after Hon. Jokotola Pelumi in 2005.

Repeated charges of fraud and political thuggery had marked his speakership. In 2020, Obasa allegedly diverted the Assembly’s funds to his personal firms and bank accounts.

He was once invited for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after the anti-graft office became overwhelmed by media reports about Obasa’s alleged financial mismanagement. He denied all the allegations, and no charges were filed after he met with detectives of the agency.

However, there are indications that Obasa may be picked up by EFCC as soon as he touches down at the airport from the US today.

With her election yesterday, Meranda became Lagos State’s first female speaker.

Taking her oath of office, Meranda, who represents Apapa 1 Constituency, said, “I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.”

Between 2007 and 2008, she worked in the oil and gas industry with Cirrus Nigeria Limited as a procurement manager.

A core Lagos indigene, Meranda is the younger sister of the Oniru of Oruland, Oba Gbolahan Lawal.

She joined politics in 2008, playing active roles in Apapa Local Government Area, first, as Senior Special Assistant on Intervention and Intergovernmental Affairs to the then Chairman, Ayodeji Joseph, and, later, as Supervisory Councillor for Health.

In 2014, she joined Worthline International Services Limited as head of operations, and in 2015, she returned to politics and was elected member of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The lawmaker is an advocate of gender equality and has called for women to be allowed fair and full representation, especially in political circles.

Meranda believes there was need for a massive reorientation to ensure that women were on “the same level” with men, especially in politics.

She holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mass Communication from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ).

Some civil rights activists have appealed to the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) to release the report of its investigation of the allegation of corruption levelled against the Radiography Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN), a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Health.

ICPC had earlier this year quizzed some management staff of the RRBN over allegations of misappropriation of funds and other alleged corrupt practices levelled against the Registrar, Prof. Mark Okeji.

Some of the allegations include embezzlement of COVID-19 fund, over-inflation of contracts, including that of the Enugu Zonal Office building; use of unqualified contractors for execution of projects; and violation of procurement policies.

The Registrar was also accused of spending huge sums of money on vehicles above the maximum approved limits for the agency.

The Registrar was also accused of buying a house in Abuja that is alleged to be worth more than his legitimate earnings for six years at the agency.

One of the affected officials who was invited was said to have resigned after she was confronted with the weighty allegations.

While the Registrar did not respond to phone calls and WhatsApp messages, another top official of the agency who pleaded anonymity, confirmed that he was invited over the allegations but denied any wrongdoing.

“Yes, I was invited by ICPC to explain something about the allegations and I have submitted my statement that I was not involved in any embezzlement. I don’t know anything about it,” he said.

He however confirmed that one of his colleagues who was also questioned resigned when confronted with evidence.

Reacting to the allegations, human rights defence activist, Comrade Moses Ajibo, in a short statement, praised the ICPC for its doggedness in the fight against corruption.

He urged the agency to release the report of its investigation and charge those who have questions to answer in court.

“I use this opportunity to call on the ICPC to publicly tell Nigerians the outcome of their investigation of the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria following the allegations before the commission,” Ajibo said.

Also speaking, civil rights crusader, Comrade Obinna Anachuna, hailed the ICPC for its achievements in the war against corruption.

“I respectfully call on the ICPC to release the outcome of the investigation of corrupt practices levelled against the Radiographers Board about four months ago. This will enhance the confidence Nigerians have on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration,” he added.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has said that the current 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state will be replaced by administrative areas.

It also gave the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu the power to suspend erring local government chairman and their deputies.

This was contained in a bill for a law to provide for Local Government’s System, Establishment And Administration and to  Consolidate All Laws on Local Government Administration and Connected Purposes, which went through public hearing yesterday.

The bill specified that the system of Local Government would be by democratically elected local governments. This is coming on the heels of the suspension of the chairman of the Alimosho LGA by the House without authority of the governor.

According to the bill, there shall be twenty (20) Local Government Areas in the State as specified in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

The bill came on the heels of the financial autonomy recently granted the 774 local governments in the country by the Supreme Court, which specified that money would not be released to any local government, which has no democratically elected executive members.

“As from the commencement of this Law, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) shall conduct elections into the twenty (20) Local Government Councils in the state as recognised by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as altered).

“The twenty (20) Local Government Councils shall have designated Area Administrative Offices as listed in the 1st Schedule to this Law for effective and efficient local government administration in the State.

“Each Local Government Area will have its headquarters in the place names in the third column of Schedule 1 to this Law.

“There shall be thirty-seven (37) Area Administrative Councils in the State with the names specified in Schedule 11 of the Creation of Local Government Areas (Amendment) Law of 2004,” the Bill stated.

It added that each Local Government’s Administrative Council shall be headed by Area Administrative Secretary, who shall be appointed by the governor subject to the confirmation of the House.

The Bill stated further that each Area Administrative Council shall be funded by the Local Government Area under which it falls.

Moreso, it was stated that each Local Government Area has the power to delegate any of its functions to the Area Administrative Council falling within the  territory of the Local Government Area.

The Lagos State Government has warned youths that engage in cybercrime that whatever crime they commit now will have repercussions in the future as the internet never forgets.

This advice was given by the Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, yesterday, at a one-day seminar on Building a Strong Cyber Safety Awareness in Schools held at the Balmoral Hall, Lagos.

Mojola explained that the internet offers boundless opportunities to learn, connect, and grow, just as he emphasized that it also comes with risks.

“Young people, in particular, are increasingly vulnerable to the dangers lurking online. Cyberbullying, phishing scams, identity theft, exposure to inappropriate content, and online predators are just a few of the challenges students encounter in cyberspace.

Sadly, many students are unaware of the risks and become victims of these threats”, he said.

“Today’s event, conducted in partnership with the Safe Schools Alliance, epitomizes the proactive approach we must adopt to ensure that our schools remain safe in both physical and digital realms by cultivating a robust foundation of cyber security awareness,” Majola added.

He, however, emphasized that the Lagos State Government remains committed to eradicating cyber-attacks hence the safety awareness seminar in schools, just as he added that they decided to begin with the children to protect them children from being infected abolition and also to allow them to decipher the right from the wrong information, and particularly not to fall into temptation of joining wrong and non-educative and unproductive websites.

Also contributing, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Sesan Ogundeko, said the Lagos State Government would want our children to know the need to access the Internet and the implications of knowing what is good and what is bad for them, hence the need to inculcate a seminar of this nature in their mind as being witnessed today.

Also, in his remark, Dr. Bisi Esuruoso, the Lead Resources, Safe Schools, Lagos, said seminars such as this are timely as they highlight what benefits the seminar will undoubtedly prepare schools across Lagos to effectively tackle cyber threats, thereby fostering a safer digital environment for everyone involved.

Students spoke on the lessons learned as they hope to put everything into practice, emphasizing that with the rise of false narratives and cyberbullying in social media, it is believed that this seminar by the Lagos State Safety Commission will equip students with the right tools to guide themselves against cyber bullies.

Sanwo-Olu Gives Amnesty to Developers, Building Owners Without Approval Till Dec /2024/10/16/sanwo-olu-gives-amnesty-to-developers-building-owners-without-approval-till-dec/ /2024/10/16/sanwo-olu-gives-amnesty-to-developers-building-owners-without-approval-till-dec/#respond Wed, 16 Oct 2024 04:13:52 +0000 /?p=1021727

•Fashola underscores importance of town planners in government, Lagos mega status

Segun James

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, extended the provision of amnesty to owners and developers of existing buildings without planning approvals till December 31st in the state.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, had recently disclosed that the deadline for the amnesty would last till end of October.

However, Sanwo-Olu’s extension, yesterday, at a two-day Physical Planning Summit organised by the government at Eko Hotels, Lagos, was greeted with wild jubilation and acceptance by the audience.

The theme of the summit was, ‘Rethinking Lagos: A New Vision for a Regional and Integrated Megacity.”

Sanwo-Olu, who acknowledged the impacts of the achievements of one of his predecessors, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, which he claimed other successors had continued to build on, noted that town planners must be placed in the rightful position.

In his keynote address, Fashola noted that, “A megacity is not a choice; it is not a destination, but a status. The number of people within a designated area is 10 million and above. Once you have that, you have a megacity.”

He explained that this status of megacity has placed a burden on Sanwo-Olu, which meant there were more headaches because of the number of challenges that go with it.

Fashola challenged town planners in the state, saying in the megacity arrangement, “the most important member of that cabinet is the town planner. It is the responsibility of town planners to ensure how the megacity evolves.

“The town planners have become docile; they have not taken the driver’s seat; they have not been vocal. If the town planners had taken a step on the journey of visioning, some of the problems we face today would be solved.”

On the environment, the former Minister of Power and Housing added that, “Nature has been kind to us, if not kinder because we have almost everything. But how do we use those resources? That is the role of town planners.”

He stressed that part of the problems in the country was that people built houses before constructing the roads, saying unfortunately after the building, they have no roads to their houses.

He charged the town planners to take the frontal role, adding: “It is the responsibility of the town planners to play a pivotal role before the economic planners come on board.”

On the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT), Fashola pointed out that the government should carry out steps to curtail the excesses of motorcyclists and tricyclists.

He recalled how he had to use veto power as the then governor during a State Executive meeting to have BRT scale hurdles for the betterment of the transport system in the State.

“The government will have to reclaim the BRT from the tyranny of motorcyclists, tricyclists, and Europe. I saw hesitancy during my time. The power of the governor can be used to be a good bully. We must reclaim the BRT, we spent a lot of money to build it.”

He observed that the proliferation of Okada, tricycles,  was in conflict with what was envisioned on climate change.

Earlier, Olumide said, “The Summit is aimed at better positioning the State for investment as proposed in the ODPs. It has brought experts in urban planning, resilience, development partnership, legal and policy analysis, risk management, project finance and governance to explore options available for implementation of the sustainable development.”

He explained that operative development plans have been exploited by the governor to be “very responsive to the need for an orderly, organised, livable and sustainable environment and has demonstrated it by a dogged implementation of the THEMES+ Agenda especially the Making Lagos a 21st century Economy Pillar.”

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, assured the creative arts sector of his administration’s commitment and support for the industry.

Sanwo-Olu spoke on Sunday after watching a stage play, “Kurunmi”, written by renowned playwright, Professor Ola Rotimi, at Terra Kulture in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Kurunmi explores the themes of supremacy of tradition, social change, responsible leadership, control, and accountability.

The governor said his government’s commitment to the sector was reflected in the Lagos State government’s investments in various initiatives, including training, manpower development and the promotion of arts among others.

The play, which paraded a large cast of 75 young and veteran actors and crew members, was staged at Terra Kulture Arena on Saturday and Sunday, September 28 and 29.

It was put together by Stagecraft Studios and Film Productions.

Sanwo-Olu was accompanied by his Special Adviser on Tourism, Art, and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, and other close aides to watch the play produced by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, and directed by a renowned movie producer and actor, Mr. Oladapo Muyideen, popularly known as ‘Lala.’

The stage play was also watched by top executives of First Bank, one of the major sponsors, as well as veteran Nollywood actors and actresses, which included Yemi Solade, Mercy Aigbe Adeoti, and her husband, Kazeem Adeoti, among others.

Speaking on the command performance at the stage play, Sanwo-Olu said, “Kurunmi is a powerful exploration of themes, such as the supremacy of tradition, social change, responsible leadership, control, and accountability.

“Set in the Yoruba kingdoms of Oyo, Ijaiye, and Ibadan, the play follows Kurunmi, a military leader and war general, as he navigates internal strife and external threats from imperial powers.

“The play is produced by my media aide, Gboyega Akosile, and directed by Mr. Oladapo Muyideen.

“I firmly believe that our support for the arts and creative sector is crucial for fostering an environment where this industry can thrive. Our commitment is reflected in our investments in various initiatives, including training, manpower development, and arts promotion, among others.”

Commenting on the stage play, Adeoti commended Sanwo-Olu for supporting the arts.

She said, “Watching the play KURUMI tonight gave me a nostalgic feeling! It took me back to my theatre arts days at the university. I do miss the stage!

“Well done to the amazing cast and crew; it was a great watch! Special shout out to the Executive Producer, Gboyega Akosile, and the Artistic Director, Lala.”

The staging of the play at the weekend was supported by Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture. It was art of the government’s effort to promote the historical heritage and prevent the African culture and traditions from going into extinction, as well as expose and awaken the consciousness of youths to the role of good leadership anywhere they find themselves.

The play was part of  First Bank’s First@arts initiative aimed at promoting the arts, preserving cultural heritage, and providing a platform for creative expression.

Other sponsors included Nigerian Breweries Plc, with its Goldberg beer, an attestation of the brand’s connection to the culture and tradition of its consumers.

•Lagos police vow to dismantle criminal networks, parades 98 suspects

•Anambra command arrests supplier of food to gunmen, recovers pistol, live ammunition

Segun James in Lagos, David-Chyddy Eleke in Awka and Linus Aleke in Abuja

The Federal Government has appealed to citizens to support the deradicalisation and rehabilitation of repentant terrorists, notwithstanding the stiff opposition in certain quarters to such counterterrorism measures.

This was as the newly-appointed Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Ishola Olanrewaju, has vowed to smoke out criminals and their networks, adding that his team was battle-ready to rid the state of all criminals.

At the same time, the police in Anambra State have arrested a man, who was supplying food to gunmen in their camps in various bushes in the state.

The Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, addressing a press conference to unveil  the activities lined up to mark the 2025 armed forces remembrance day celebration, pledged to continue with its soft approach to counterterrorism and insurgency in the country.

He said through the defence headquarters, ministry of defence and relevant agencies, the federal government would continue to deradicalise and rehabilitate repentant insurgents to live peaceful and productive lives.

He explained that this strategy was aimed at employing the carrot and stick or kinetic and non-kinetic approach to the warfare.

“It is gladdening to note that scores of insurgents have been surrendering and renouncing terrorism. We will therefore continue to call for cooperation from our citizens who are rightly aggrieved by the past deeds of these repentant insurgents.

“We all have to realise and appreciate the need to quickly end this war to usher in an era of peace and mutual coexistence for the development of our beloved fatherland, “he said.

Abubakar averred that the losses occasioned by this war on insurgency in terms of human, infrastructure and material resources incurred were huge, hence the need for an end to the ugly scenario.

He said the armed forces of Nigeria had risen up to these challenges irrespective of the costs paid by the troops.  “When bandits and criminals formulate new techniques and establish new bases when dislodged, the armed forces have continued to adopt new strategies and switch up their tactics to take the battle to their doorsteps.

“Rest assured, we will continue to prioritise the welfare, training, and equipment needs of our troops to maintain their operational readiness and efficiency even as we look forward to adopting a proactive approach to combating our security challenges by harnessing our intelligence resources and having stronger partnerships with our West African neighbours,” the minister said.

Noting that the war on insurgency has led to lots of security challenges threatening the corporate existence of the nation, Abubakar assured the people that the government would continue to equip the armed forces with combat capabilities, training and equipment with a view to reducing to the barest minimum, causalities due to operations.

Lagos Police Command Dismantles Criminal Networks, Parades 98 Suspects

The newly-appointed Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Ishola Olanrewaju, has vowed to smoke out criminals and their networks, even as he said that his team is battle-ready to rid the state of all criminals.

This was as operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps conducted a raid at Oshodi, arresting 30 miscreants, including a female, while ridding the state of miscreants.

Olanrewaju assumed duty as the 40th Commissioner of Police at the state command on September 18th made this declaration during his inaugural media briefing at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, where he paraded 98 suspected criminals.

He emphasised a proactive approach to crime-fighting, detailing his team’s readiness to dismantle criminal networks across Lagos.

He also announced a partnership with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other transport unions to tackle “one-chance” robberies operating in commercial buses across the state.

“Whoever enters a bus must know the bus they are boarding,” he said, highlighting the importance of this initiative in ensuring public safety.

These operations, he noted, resulted in the arrest of suspects involved in various crimes, including armed robbery, cultism, kidnapping, and drug trafficking.

Significant seizures were made, including weapons, narcotics, stolen goods, firearms, ammunition, $402 in cash, and 39 bags of stolen rice—highlighting the extensive reach of organized crime into everyday life.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Water and Environmental Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a Twitter post said the suspects were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, with 12 of the miscreants receiving a 3-week imprisonment sentence, while the remaining 18 were ordered to perform community service.

“30 miscreants including a female were arrested at Oshodi during an early morning raid by the operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps #LAGESCOfficial,”he wrote.

The World Bank has commended the transformation recorded in Lagos State over the last five years, and praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for a job well done.

The multilateral institution said the state had not only been implementing programmes targeted at improving the quality of life of residents, but had also progressed in upgrading infrastructure to improve its socio-economic situation.

The commendation came from the bank’s Country Director in Nigeria, Mr. Ndiama Diop, who led the institution’s top executive team on a courtesy visit to Sanwo-Olu at State House, Marina, on Tuesday.

Diop acknowledged the reforms being implemented by the Sanwo-Olu administration in the transportation sector, which had expanded multimodal transportation capability in Lagos.

He said the delivery of intra-city rail infrastructure and investment in waterways had positioned the state’s economy to be better than before.

The World Bank country director said, “I want to commend and congratulate the Lagos State government under your leadership for the successful efforts and vision in transforming the transportation landscape of Lagos, which has been the model for a modern city.

“The administration’s successes across various sectors are visible and they have been strategic moves in catalysing more socio-economic development and growth of the private sector.

“The quality of infrastructure has also improved people’s lives significantly. These are commendable achievements and we can visibly appreciate the impacts of the great efforts.”

The World Bank chief offered to collaborate with the state government in areas where the state had been experiencing gaps, pledging funding support to improve operational efficiency.

Responding, Sanwo-Olu welcomed partnership with the multilateral institution, stating that Lagos requires strategic support to boost capacity in the transportation sector.

The governor said the state had invested heavily in providing modern transportation infrastructure, but said the government had started to move towards service that would reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

He said, “Our vision has been driven by the desire to create sustainable economic prosperity for Lagos. Through our clearly articulated development blueprint, known as THEMES+ agenda, we have been able to intervene in all aspects of governance, especially the public transportation, with the intention to move people in predictable time.”

Sanwo-Olu called for the World Bank’s collaboration in waste-to-energy and conservation drive being championed by the government. He also sought partnership with the bank on job creation and skills development, stressing that rapid urbanisation has put pressure on the infrastructure and economy of the state.

Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, yesterday, likened President Bola Tinubu to the Austrian-born dictator of the Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, saying Nigerians were suffering, because Tinubu’s policies were harsh.

Adams, who raised his voice against the government of Tinubu, in an open letter on the state of the nation that he personally signed, urged him to reverse some of his harsh policies, because time was ticking.

“Your Excellency, I bring you good tidings from the more than 65 million Yoruba of South-West in Nigeria, including Edo, Delta, Kwara and Kogi States.

“I also write this letter to you as one of the more than 200 million people God created as Nigerians. We have no regret that we were created to inhabit this geographical space in the West African axis of the African continent.

“In fact, we are happy to be here because I don’t know any country in the world that God has blessed, in terms of natural and human resources, like Nigeria.

“Obviously, past leaders, since 1960, disappointed Nigerians with the way ‘Nigeria and Nigerians were badly led and resources selfishly managed’.

“When you came with the ‘Emilokan’ coinage in the build-up to the 2023 elections, many Nigerians were persuaded that as a democrat exposed to modern way of governance, you will perform better than Muhammadu Buhari, a soldier who deepened the poverty levels of Nigerians and increased insecurity  from 2015 to 2023. Today, events have proved that they were wrong.

“Mr. President, to say the truth without minding whose ox is gored, you have really disappointed many Nigerians who thought you were the messiah they were waiting for. The facts are there to speak for themselves.

“On May 29, 2023 when you became the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigerians, the price of a litre of fuel was less then N200. Today, it is more than N1000. As the Minister of Petroleum, I ask you, what type of reforms is this? In May 2023, Naira to a Dollar was less than N740. Today, it is more than N1,600.

“Now, your two right-hand men when you were Governor of  Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, Wale Edun (Finance Minister) and Yemi Cardoso (CBN Governor) are in charge of the economy. What exactly are the fiscal, economic and financial briefings they give you daily to convince you that they know what they are doing in those two offices?

“When Buhari left on May 29, 2023, many Nigerians heaved a sigh of relief that insecurity would soon become history. Pitiably today, from the North to the South, East to the West, the rate at which Nigerians are being abducted and some killed, even after ransom was paid, it was as if these blood-thirsty maniacs have just been unleashed on Nigerians from the hottest part of hell.

“As the Commander-in-Chief, the rising spate of insecurity across the country has put to question the kind of  briefings you get on daily basis, especially, from the Inspector- General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, the Chief of Army Staff, General Taoreed Lagbaja, and other Security Chiefs on their modus operandi to send these killers to where they belong?

“I think you and your party should be sensitive to the plights of Nigerians. Mr. President, don’t you think the wicked and draconian increase in fuel price, especially, at this time that Nigerians have been pushed to the wall, is a huge recipe for crisis? Nigerians can no longer  bear this  economic hardship any longer.

“For how long do you honestly think that despotic strategy will last? Since last year, you have visited many countries, the latest being China. Do you think your foreign counterparts treat their citizens the way you are treating Nigerians?

“Hitler, an elected democrat, quickly transformed a democratic republic into a constitutional dictatorship. The Fuhrer vowed to destroy democracy through the democratic process. And he did with the destruction of Germany in 1945. Before the destruction, the Nazi leader disabled, then dismantled the Weimar Republic.

“The Fuhrer crushed political opposition, destroyed the economy and ultimately undermined Germany’s democratic structures. When Hitler became history on April 30, 1945, Germany was in total ruins. But due to the determination of Germans, today, that country has the biggest economy in Europe.

“I hope I am wrong but I see a linkage between what happened during the ascendancy of Hitler into power and what is happening in Nigeria today,” he concluded
