A non-governmental organisation, Sustainable Development Goals for Her Initiative (SDGforHer), has decried the apathy for conventional healthcare in underserved communities, highlighting the urgency to intensify sensitisation in this regard.

It noted this as being detrimental to the Nigeria’s health care profile as well as heightens mortality risks in the country.

During a health drive for women in Makoko community in Lagos, Founder of the organisation, Hannah Ayilaran-Omon, observed a trend of distrust for orthodox care among over 200 women reached during the exercise, worrying that the situation was almost the same in rural communities.

She cited inherent dangers of this mindset to have fuelled wrong and late treatment of ailments, as she reiterated organisation’s objectives to safeguard women and children’s health, while preventing avoidable deaths.

The founder explained that the outreach  held in partnership with Total Health Trust and Alternative Bank’s Food Bank project sought to enrich physical health of women who are mostly victims of marginalisation.

She said: “This exercise aligns with our goals of driving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that pertain to women, including gender equality and good health.

For eight months consecutively, we have taken our outreach programme to different communities across the country, addressing specific challenges of over 1,500 females of different age groups. We are championing health drive in Makoko today because of our understanding of the women’s challenges in accessing maternal and antenatal services.”

The Head of Corporate Social Investment at Alternative Bank, Solomon Okonkwo, explained that partnering SDGforHer would  amplify and  drive SDGs achievement as per the company’s vision.

According to her, “We believe that achieving one SDG goal is a stepping stone to realising others. By our alliance with the initiative, we hope to reach women in vulnerable communities with all-round empowerment, including good health and financial independence.”

Representing Total Health Trust, Dr. Eyitayo Abejide addressed the locals to prioritise insurance coverage to enable them have proper health planning and access quality medical intervention at affordable cost.

Beneficiaries of the outreach enjoyed one-on-one consultation with doctor, general health talk and medical checks including BMI, blood sugar, blood pressure monitoring and antenatal counselling.

Mrs Esther Osaghae, the widow of late Fidelis Osaghae has pleaded with government and Nigerian Police to unravel the mystery behind strange death of her 33 year- old husband, Fidelis Osaghae in his work place on July 29,2024.

Ƶ learnt that late Fidelis until his death was a Manager at Angle 90 branch of Valchi Fast Food and Bar, Auchi, Edo State . On the fateful day, he returned from work around 2: 30 midnight to fetch an unknown item and dashed back to office, while he promised to return in a not too distant time.

According to Esther during a press conference by a non-governmental organisation handling the case, Akin Fadeyi Foundation (AFF), her late husband typically returned home midnight given the demands in his work place, but failed to return on this fateful day.

Esther ,a nursing mother of a two-month old said Fidelis employer, Valentine Oyemike claimed he may have committed suicide, in which she disputed since there was no underlying reason warranting such.

“On the ill-fated day, as my husband dashed back to work midnight, he told me to leave the door open, promising to return soon. By 5: 00 am, I woke up not seeing him by my side and curiouly called his line severally to no avail. I was forced to call the supervisor of the company, Tracey who picked late and told me situation is under control. By this time, I became nervous”, she recounted.

Esther said Oyemike later reached her in the morning, requesting to meet him at one Favour Hospital in Afasho, Edo State.

She however stayed back as she was advised against visiting the hospital with her two months old baby, while her elder sister, simply identified as Etomi represented her.

According to Etomi who also spoke with the press, she met the deceased’s lifeless body in Oyemike’s car with patches all over his body, his wedding band removed and boxers torned. Pictures shown to the media also confirmed this.

Esther said she suspected a case of homicide by the analysis of the corpse, thus sought justice for her husband whom she said they have just been married for a little above one year.

Meanwhile, AFF has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to wade in to the issue, just as Esther had alleged move by Auchi Police Division to sweep the matter under the carpet.

The petition signed by AFF’s Executive Director, Akin Fadeyi and released to Ƶ doubted the capability of Auchi Police to handle the case professionally, citing suspected incompetence and compromise by police.

In the petition, AFF worried that the DPO of Auchi division was quick to exonerate the suspect, Onyemike, described as an influential person in Auchi environs, adding that the division had not shown any willingness to take action on a suspected homicide case.

“We are not able to risk our vote of confidence in the investigation of the death of Mr Fidelis within Auchi jurisdiction for fear of interference and compromise. We believe in the capacity of the Nigerian Police to get justice for Mrs Esther and we are willing to provide necessary support in this regard”, said Fadeyi.

Contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in Edo, Moses Joel said the matter is being investigated by the State Criminal Investigations Department(SCID) ,assuring that outcome will be made public in due time.

The Chief Executive Officer of Quomodo Systems Africa, Oluwole Asalu, has underscored the need for investors to prioritise cybersecurity to keep their businesses going and to avoid unnecessary loss.

According to the serial entrepreneur, the increasing reliant of businesses on digital technologies poses significant cybersecurity risks, requiring organisations to set up a robust cybersecurity framework. Noting that the financial sector was mostly hit by cyber-crime in Nigeria, with the sector losing up to N50. 5 billion between 2019 to July 2023, he expressed concern that the menace was still being overlooked.

Asalu, argued that cybercrime which is now the biggest risks confronting financial sector was often treated as monetary thefts, adding however that it also entails intrusions into private spheres and disruptions to social order.

“In light of the significant risks associated with cyber threats, it is crucial that businesses prioritise cybersecurity as a critical component of their operations and business sustainability.

“To achieve this, a multi-faceted approach is necessary. Firstly, robust security measures must be implemented, including firewalls, encryption, and intrusion detection systems, to provide a strong defence against cyber-attacks.

“Cybersecurity is not merely a technical requirement but a societal imperative. The beacon permits innovation to thrive, economies to expand, and individuals to connect without fear. Cybersecurity is our silent guardian, and it’s our collective duty to maintain its watch,” he said.

He called for proactive steps against cybersecurity by identifying vulnerabilities which are discoverable through regular security audits and penetration testing.

He went ahead to advise businesses to take cybersecurity as necessity and not luxury, urging organisation to set aside resources for same and train employees duly on best practices.

“Collaboration is quite key. Ƶes must work together, share intelligence and best practices to stay ahead of the evolving cyber threat landscape.

“By adopting a proactive and comprehensive approach to cybersecurity, businesses can protect themselves, customers, and reputation, as well as remain competitive and successful in today’s digital marketplace,” he stated.

The Nigeria’s food and hospitality industries valued at $3.2 billion and over $1.3 billion respectively continue to be a key component and driver of economy, thus a viable investment option to consider.

The event held on the sidelines of the 50th anniversary of Wavecrest College of Hospitality held in partnership with Gino and Bama, flagship brands of GB Foods Nigeria

“The event is also put together to celebrate African culinary mastery and hospitality and their essence.”, he said.

The week- long event engaged a cross-section of experts who dissect the industries at different sessions. There were also awareness walk, games day, outreach, open day and food fair as well as a boot camp with attendees equipped with skills in food photography, makeup artistry, personal branding, and social media management.

Not a few women are blazing the trail in Nigeria’s business terrain, notwithstanding that their rate of participation in the labour market is not close to that of their male counterparts which represents 65.9 per cent of Nigeria’s labour force.

Challenges abound that restrain women from either accessing jobs or forced out of employment population. This is in spite of their ability to impact growth rapidly. In its recent Employee Satisfaction report, Jobberman Nigeria revealed that 70 per cent of women are likely to leave their current jobs, 24 per cent are yet to make up their minds while only six percent are happy to remain.

Ranging from issues as discriminatory practices, pay, gender bias, denied promotion opportunities, workplace harassment, intimidation and pressures from family, career balance, amongst others, all constrain women in the work place.

The aforementioned challenges also come as major discouragements for Chief Executive Officer of Emerging Africa Group, Dr. Toyin Sanni whose name may not have mattered or impacted generations had she given in to circumstances.

Right from her days as Group Chief Executive Officer of United Capital Plc, the finance guru said she had to leverage connections with family, friends and mentors for advice and encouragement as well as support network to stay.

Not also dismissing the place of resilience, determination and persistence, she encouraged ambitious women to emulate these strategies to succeed in their career path.

Guided by the above, Sanni rose through the ranks to become one of the few women calling the shot in nation’s investment banking space, and in 2018, established Emerging Africa, a leading provider of financial services that is giving competitors a run for their money.

Expected while setting up a new and woman- owned enterprise, those challenges the multiple award winning wealth advisor thought she may have overcome as an employee resurfaced, but in a new dimension.

According to her, establishing own-business poses challenges for women in areas such as financing, doubt or trust deficit from male prospective male clients or partners, amongst others.

Citing her experience, she said, “I recognised a critical gap in Africa’s access to finance and investments, thus the motivation for Emerging Africa to bridge this gap by creating a financial institution that empowers individuals and younger businesses across the continent. More so, my passion for entrepreneurship pushed me.

“However, at the initial stage, I was held back by lack of peer mentors and advisers as well as the underrepresentation of women in the financial space. There aren’t many women controlling this space and that gave me a kind of skepticism about my capacity.

“Also to note was initial bottlenecks to secure mandates for sizeable transactions, in some cases feeling edged out by male figures in the industry. There were instances of male clients who had committed to work with us and would later recant based on pushback from their friends who wouldn’t let us join the “club”. Of course, not all men resist women in business.

“There were also limitations around accessing patient funding to underwrite transactions, being a male-dominated Industry was also a threat while securing investment for a woman-led venture was notably difficult.”

On how she overcame, the Lagos Ƶ School (LBS) alumni said she drew strength from her long-term vision and the support of trusted mentors and colleagues who believed in her mission.

As par sourcing capital to get the business off the ground, she said she took the risk of sacrificing her life savings, family asset, funds of friends and  support of mentors like  Tony Elumelu, Yinka Sanni at StanbicIBTC, Ike Chioke at Afrinvest and Jimoh Abubakar, amongst others.

She advised that women who are stuck at the capital stage have quite a number of options to explore, including offerings by Emerging Capital Microfinance banks and Venture Capital division.

“They specialised in providing essential funding for early stage businesses who have achieved proof of concept and meet their other criteria,” she said.

Other than that, she said women founders could also explore Incubation programs and investment from angel investors and crowdfunding platforms.

“Better still, applying for grants and loans targeted at women entrepreneurs. Additionally, tapping into personal savings, utilising business incubators or accelerators, and exploring partnerships or collaborations can help secure the necessary capital to launch a successful venture,” she informed.

Acknowledging that some with financial prowess get trapped with business / investment choice, she advised, “Women can leverage opportunities offered by the global demand for sustainable investments such as renewable energy, solar transition, SMEs financing and gender lens investing.

“The female economy also offers opportunities (US economy last year was dominated by the Trio of Taylor Swift, Beyonce and the film Barbie). Opportunities abound in Fashion, cosmetics, make-up and personal care products.

“The recent reforms in the power space has opened opportunities to invest in IPPs and supply power to eligible buyers. Social media have amplified the value of the creative arts like fashion, music, movies, culinary arts and the like. Moreover, our Balanced Diversity Fund at Emerging Africa Group is another great wealth option available for women in today’s economic landscape.”

The need for strengthening regional integration to enhance economic growth in Africa was recently reiterated at the Africa CEO Forum that held in Kigali, Rwanda, recently.

Experts from across the continent who gathered for the forum express concern that Africa’s share of global trade was still less than three percent in spite of binding agreements, including African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Speaking at the forum, the Chief Executive Officer of Vivajets, Chukwuerika Achum, noted that factors such as language, political and geographical barriers still limit collaborations and pose a  great challenge to business integration in Africa.

He identified numerous opportunities in business aviation to bridge existing gap and drive necessary growth. According to him, as Africa continues to evolve, the need for business aviation has become increasingly significant.

“Ƶ aviation is a success enabler for the 21st century African leader. It bypasses the common barriers that hinder mobility and collaboration in Africa whilst facilitating connectivity for business and policy leaders across boundaries”, he stated.

Chief Operating Officer of Vivajets, Tejumade Salami further reiterated the company’s determination to foster innovations that would distinguish African leaders in global society.

“We are leveraging innovation to make business aviation more accessible and affordable, thereby democratizing access to an often-exclusive service. Our innovative approach has led to the development of digital platforms CharterXE and FlyPJX, both brands affiliated with Vivajets.

“Our approach aims to democratize access to private aviation, ensuring that more leaders and organizations can harness its benefits,” he said.

.Set June 1  for new price take-off

Omolabake Fasogbon

Following the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)’s announcement of April 2024 inflation rate hitting 33.69 per cent as against 33.20 per cent for March, International Breweries (IB) Plc has announced a new increase in the prices of its beers and other Stock-Keeping Units (SKUs) products in the country effectively from June 1.

IB Plc’s latest increase in beer and other SKUs upward review adjustments in its prices will be its fifth this year’s alone, at a period Nigerians are lamenting hardship fueled by the continue rising in inflation rate.

The company in a memo signed by its Head of Sales, East, Mr. Olaleye Abimbola, directed all its trade partners to comply  with the new price upward adjustments, beginning from June 1, citing current market realities behind the reason for the review, mostly inflationary pressures.

The  memo titled: ‘Price Review Notification,’ quoted Abimbola  as saying: “We write wishing the best for you, your family and your business. This is to notify you, our valued business partner, that we are reviewing prices in our portfolio due to the current market realities, as we work to enhance our pricing models that ensures you are best served by us. “To this end, the review in the prices of our selected SKUs will take effect on the 1st of June.

“Find below the list of affected SKU’s: Eagle Lager RB 600mix12, Eagle Extra Stout RB 600mix12, Trophy Stout 600ml ×12, Beta Malt Can 330mix24, Beta Malt PET 250ml×24, Beta Malt PET 330mlx24, Ground Malt Can 330mix24, Ground Malt PET 250mlx24, Grand Malt PET 330mlx24. “We are confident that this decision will be prove beneficial to all our business partners.  “Similarly we urge you to honour the same pricing strategy we had in the previous months until these changes are announced and implemented. Thank you for your attention,” Abimbola added.

However, the new price adjustments did not go down well with its esteemed business partners who are complaining bitterly of where to get funds to comply with the new IB Plc’s prices and directive in the memo letter.

Specifically, the company’s distributors and trade partners are crying loud that the new interest rate of 22.5 per cent and Cash Ratio Rate (CRR) may scuttle their plans of approaching Nigerian banks for credits to adjust to IB Plc’s new price come June 1.

The federal government has been called on to initiate a new legislation that would decriminalise attempted suicide to promote support for survivors.

A mental health advocacy organisation, Asido Foundation,  made the call during an advocacy visit to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice,  Mr. Lateef Fagbemi.

The foundation stated that the legislation would put Nigeria on the same page with the global society.

The Chairman of the foundation’s board of trustee, Mr Meka Olowola, said that the  implementation of the Mental Health Act and adopting international standards for mental health, is crucial to protect the human rights of persons with mental disorders as well as 50 million at-risk Nigerians.

He worried that criminalising  attempted suicide in the country, which attracts a penalty of one year imprisonment, remained a threat amid whopping one million deaths to suicide annually.

On his part, the Founder and CEO of the foundation, Dr. Jibril Abdulmalik, said that mental health conditions, especially depression, were behind majority of attempted suicide cases, prompting  legalisation of the act globally.

Abdulmalik said: “Individuals who attempt suicide require compassionate care and treatment in a hospital setting, rather than criminal prosecution and imprisonment.

“Nigeria urgently needs to follow global trends and decriminalise attempted suicide to offer vital support and compassion.

“With mental health reform, Nigeria can diminish the stigma associated with mental illness, broaden access to mental health services, and enhance the overall quality of life.

“This will contribute to economic growth and affirm mental health as a fundamental human right.”

Remarking, Fagbemi promised to take urgent action on the matter, reaffirming present administration’s  commitment to enhancing the nation’s healthcare system.

He said: “We will endeavour to carry along the state attorneys general at our upcoming meeting, where we will deliberate and take necessary action. On the Mental Health Act.

“I am confident that the Minister of Health is already giving it due consideration, we wil work together to ensure successful implementation.”
