Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has declared Nigeria’s commitment to a regional digital future for West Africa. Tijani stated this at the opening ceremony of the 17th edition of West African Internet Governance Forum (WIGF 2025), holding in Abuja.

With the theme, “Building a Resilient, Inclusive, and Safe Digital Future for West Africa,” the event was hosted by National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA)

According to Tijani, in an era where digital technologies are transforming every facet of life, resilience, inclusivity, and safety are no longer optional, they are essential.

He stated, “As the host country, Nigeria is deeply committed to supporting a robust and equitable digital landscape across West Africa, through initiatives like our Broadband Infrastructure projects, Championing Subsea Cable Resilience, Promoting Data Protection and Privacy – Accelerating Digital Literacy across the nation – Developing our National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.”

Tijani added, “We are working to deepen democratise access to the internet, protect users’ rights, and enable innovation that uplifts our economies and empowers our people.

“We also recognise that these goals cannot be achieved in isolation. They require collaboration between governments, civil society, the private sector, technical communities, academia, and, most importantly, the youth who are the largest drivers of our digital economies.”

The minister urged participants to leave the forum with “commitments to build infrastructure that reach the underserved, promote digital literacy and digital rights at individual level, create inclusive digital policies, to secure our cyberspace, and to foster innovation that reflects our values and aspirations as a region”.

Chairperson, West Africa Internet Governance Forum, Mary Uduma, explained, “Today, if you want to pay for any purchase we make within Africa, it might be difficult to use our ordinary credit card.

“We want integration, inclusivity, safe internet, affordable, reasonable and available internet for all. We want our children to be safe online, because safety is everybody’s call. So we want people to be responsible and want people to use the internet responsibly. “

Director General, NITDA, Kachifu Abdullahi, in his welcome address, stated that the forum was a clarion call for West Africa “to come together in pursuit of a secure, equitable and forward focused digital ecosystem.”

West African Youth Coordinator for Internet Governance Forum, Osei Keja, said the whole function of the West African Governance Forum was to amplify the concerns and leverage on them to dialogue to push for inclusive policies.

The United Nations (UN) has commended the private sector in Nigeria for giving women more opportunities in the workplace.

The UN women representative to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Beatrice Eyong made the assertion at the WODDI Inspiring Women WIWS 2025 summit.

With the theme, “Bold Moves, Boundless Impacts,” the event was organised by the Women of Divine Destiny Initiative (WODDI), in Abuja to inspire women to make bold moves that will bring about boundless impacts.

Speaking on the sidelines, Eyong said, “We have over 200 private enterprises that have adopted what we call women empowerment principles. Those women empowerment principles begin from how you recruit both men and women.

“In the private sector, we have about at least 20 per cent or 22 per cent of CEOs who are women. So, they are leading. If you look at the National Assembly, it’s just 5 per cent but the private sector is showing a good example.”

However, she noted that “we are not yet there, but we will get there.”

The Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim who was represented by one of her aides advised women not to settle for less.

“It talks about taking the bold move, moving from your comfort zone to dare the odds and find your place and find your definition and find your reason for well-being. Women should not settle for less.”

Speaking on having equal opportunities in work places, she said, “What the women are asking for is not equality in terms of sexes. They’re talking about equality in terms of appointments, in terms of the good things that are in the society.

“And at the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, under the renewed hope of the present administration, under President Bola Tinubu, the Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Iman Suleiman Ibrahim, is not resting on her oars.”

The National President, National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Princess Edna Azura, noted that what WODDI is doing aligns with their mandate adding that it would help in empowering more women.

“Our mandate is to empower Nigerian women, educate Nigerian women and give them equal representation. And from what we are having from WODDI today, we are moving in the same direction.

“And I believe women have come from all walks of life and we are going back very impactful and we’ll share what we have learned here and it will go viral in the whole world,” she said.

The wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde said every leader who attended the summit would help to take the message to women at the grassroots.

“The take-away for the leaders is that they will take it to the grassroots and they’re going to be mentors to women who ordinarily could not afford getting down here.

“Am going back home to Oyo State to disseminate the information to women at the grassroots and “he for she” whom I believe will mentor both girls and young men.”

Head, organising committee for WODDI 2025, Uloma Rochas Nwosu said they organised the summit for women to realise that they can make bold moves that will bring about boundless impacts.

“We’re asking that women take a step further from what they’re used to, breaking bounds, breaking boundaries, just pushing. Irrespective of what life throws at us, let’s push through and make those bold moves.

This event has been created by the WODDI, to ensure that women look beyond the challenges and everything that we’re facing and just take that step.

“Think about it. What’s the other option? If you don’t make that bold move, you know, you still have to be in the situation that you’re in. So this is just to drive all women to say, you know what, we understand what’s going on in the nation, in the world as it were, just take that step.

In her remarks, the founder of WODDI, Mrs. Nneoma Okorocha encouraged women saying that “Bold Moves, Boundless Impact” is not just a theme, but a demand.

“It dares us to break through ceilings, defy expectations, and step fully into our power. It reminds us that playing small does not serve us, and fear has no place where purpose exists,” she said.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has stated that African economies will thrive when the continent is able to lawfully share secured data.

He sated this in Abuja, Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA), with the theme, “Balancing Innovation in Africa: Data Protection and Privacy in Emerging Technologies” and the official launch of the Nigerian Virtual Privacy Academy (NVPA).

Represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Sen. Ibrahim Hadejia, the vice president noted that the African economy will thrive when Africa can lawfully share secured data.

“We recognise that data is not merely a digital resource. It is a human story told in numbers. It is the fabric of trust in our economies. It is the currency of reliability in our institutions.

And as the African continental Future “Agreement expands the scale of its African exchange, our ability to share data securely and lawfully will define our capacity to thrive,” he said.

On the importance of the conference,  he stated that such fora were not only welcome but essential, adding that they offer the chance to cross-pollinate ideas, to nurture human capital, and to strengthen mechanisms for mutual legal assistance.

He also spoke on the legal framework of NDPC, noting that “Nigeria’s legal framework for data protection is globally recognised as one of the most progressive.

According to the VP, “through it, we reassigned our alignment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. More importantly, our data protection ecosystem is now directly tied to the debris of the eight presidential priorities of this administration.”

In his addresses, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani said “Nigeria is fully committed to a future where technological progress is both inclusive and a right perspective.”

“ As we digitise government services, open up digital trade corridors, and advance the need for digital identity on the platform, we must ensure that our value chains are secure, fair, and transparent.

“This is not just about the platform, but it is about trust. And without trust, the digital economy cannot scale,” he said.

While launching the NVPA, the minister said,  “This end permits me to again spotlight another of our strategic steps forward, the Data Protection Virtual Academy.

“This is the world’s first initiative aimed at delivering virtual training in data protection and privacy across both the public sector and the private sector.”

The President of NADPA, Iro Adamu, who was represented by the first Vice President, Immaculate Kassait from Kenya, stated that Africa was committed to a trust worthy digital environment.

“Our presence in Abuja serves as a testament to the unity and shared aspiration of Africa. Together we are committed to advancing towards a trustworthy digital environment that safeguards the privacy of individuals.”

“Human beings, regardless of gender, share common characteristics, that it’s necessary to safeguard, preserve their rights of personal data in this evolving digital landscape,” she added

According to her, the 2026 edition would be in  Ivorian capital, Abidjan

The National Commissioner of National Data Protection Council (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, in his welcome address disclosed that the Nigerian data protection sector now has a cumulative revenue of over $10 million within the space of three years, adding that the ecosystem has also created about 23,000 jobs,

“In terms of revenue to government, within less than two years, we were able to generate over $1.2 million to government in terms of registration fee, audit filing fee, and compliance fee on the part of data controllers and processors,” he said.

He called for a deeper collaboration among African data protection authorities for enforcement cooperation, capacity building, and knowledge sharing.

European Union (EU), Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Gunter, who was represented by the EU Head of Green and Digital Economy, Inga Stefanowcz, stated that the “EU is committed to working closely with Nigeria and  Africa to deepen data protection.”

The acting Deputy Chief of Mission of the United Statesof America, Christine Harbaugh, has stated that Nigeria  being admitted as an associate member of the  Global Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) would attract foreign investors because of the trust it will confer on the nation’s digital economy.

She spoke at the African Data Protection Authorities ((NADPA/NAPDP) Conference and Annual General Meeting 2025, in Abuja yesterday.

Harbaugh said Nigeria, being a member of the GCBPR will make foreign investors to come and do digital business in Nigeria.

“By joining the Global Forum, Nigeria becomes part of a committed international community working to reduce data protection risks and ensure strong safeguards travel with the data no matter where it is transferred.

“This commitment to data protection will enhance Nigeria’s reputation as a reliable partner in the global digital economy. The decision to join the CBPR Forum will open new avenues for commercial opportunities between U.S. and Nigerian companies.

“ Approximately 60 per cent of Nigerian startups are Incorporated in the United States and facilitating cross-border data flows will increase the ability of these companies to service U.S. and Nigerian clients and further fuel our growing digital trade.

“By aligning itself to a globally recognised standard for data protection, Nigeria is creating a digital ecosystem that will attract investment and foster collaboration. With this decision, US companies, known for their technological advancements and expertise, can find a more welcoming environment in Nigeria,” she said.

She added that “Nigeria’s decision to join the Global Cross Border Privacy Rules Forum was a testament to a commitment to digital transformation and economic growth.

“This decision marks a significant milestone for Nigeria, demonstrating its commitment and leadership in the global digital economy. By joining the CBPR Forum as an associate member, Nigeria is sending a clear message to the world: it is open for digital business.

“The immense potential that the digital economy holds for Nigeria is undeniable. This move underscores an important step in creating an enabling environment that fosters innovation, growth, and collaboration,” she added

She also spoke on Nigeria’s efforts towards achieving a safe digital economy.

According to her,  “In recent years, Nigeria has made significant strides in embracing digital transformation. The tech industry here is growing rapidly, with startups and established companies alike driving innovation across various sectors. By beginning the process of aligning with the CBPR Forum, Nigeria is further solidifying its position as a global hub for digital business and innovation.

“This move will not only protect U.S. and Nigerian citizens’ personal data but also build trust with international partners. Untrusted data systems, that prioritise control over privacy and sacrifice freedoms in the name of “security,” pose risks not only to the private sector but corrode citizens’ trust in the integrity of their democracy.”

In his address, the National Commissioner of NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji highlighted the reasons behind the commission’s application for the associate membership of GCBPR.

“Our intention to join the Global Cross-border Privacy Rules (CBPR) Forum as an associate member. Nigeria will have the opportunity to observe the procedure for ensuring accountability within organisations during cross-border data transfers and ensure that our indigenous Data Protection Compliance Organisations are able to leverage this accountability procedure among others.

“This framework will particularly ensure that organisations in Nigeria would have more options in cross-border transfer of personal data; and that relevant safeguards for data protection under the NDP Act are painstakingly implemented.” He added

Mutfang: Nigeria Made Mistake Allowing Non-state Actors to Acquire Capabilities /2025/04/05/mutfang-nigeria-made-mistake-allowing-non-state-actors-to-acquire-capabilities/ /2025/04/05/mutfang-nigeria-made-mistake-allowing-non-state-actors-to-acquire-capabilities/#comments Sat, 05 Apr 2025 04:27:15 +0000 /?p=1071652

Oghenevwede Ohwovoriole in Abuja

Governor Caleb Mutfang of  Plateau State has stated that the country made a mistake by allowing non- state actors acquire capabilities that are almost overwhelming the security agencies, declaring that it was time to reverse the development.

He said this during the unveiling and live demonstration of the first set of locally manufactured attack drones, missiles and bombs by Briech Unmanned Aerial Systems Limited in Abuja.

In his remarks at the event, Mutfang  said: “Indeed, we have made a mistake as a nation when we allowed non-state actors to acquire capabilities that are almost overwhelming state actors.

“And it is time to address that disadvantage. We must get to the point where no one operates within our borders with capabilities that compete, not to talk of exceed those who have been charged with the constitutional responsibility for protecting our national sovereignty.

“I, therefore, welcome this development by this company that we are entering into strategic and sensible acquisition of technology without strings attached.

“It’s important for our national progression. And I’m sure that beyond the nations that can assist us in fighting insurgency, criminality, and other devious acts, there are many countries that probably in assisting us would want to put strings to whatever we acquire.

“It is therefore heartwarming and gratifying that we can enter into partnership with technologies originating from other countries to be able to localise and adapt to our environment.

” I therefore want to congratulate Dr. Bright Echefu and his team for this achievement. And I’m sure that this collaboration is going to enhance the overall efficiency of our armed forces and that sooner than later we will gain the victory we desire over all these forces that have terrorised us for many decades now.”

Speaking earlier, he appreciated the Nigerian Armed Forces for their contributions towards securing the  nation, adding that “as governor of my state, Plateau, I can attest to the professionalism, efficiency of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

According to him, that’s why today, Plateau State is regaining its name as the home of peace and tourism.

He stressed that, “one of the tools that has made this possible is the effective deployment of technology.”

In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa stated that the local manufacturing of attack drones would aid the military and save the nation revenue from what the country spends buying such drones from foreign manufacturers.

“In a world where the global politics surrounding the procurement of advanced military hardware, particularly combat drones, have become more intricate, countries that do not produce such solutions are made to face bureaucratic bottlenecks and diplomatic hurdles in acquiring these critical platforms.

“It is in this context that the indigenous production of Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles becomes an invaluable strategic asset.

“By manufacturing these drones locally, Nigeria reduces its dependence on foreign sources, ensures prompt acquisition and strengthens its ability to respond swiftly to security threats.

“The cumbersome bureaucracy that has characterised the procurement of defence equipment, even when urgent needs arise, has been a source of concern.

“The development of locally-made drones significantly mitigates this challenge by providing a seamless, efficient and responsive process that aligns with our operational imperatives.”

The UNICCON group has urged the federal government to integrate telemedicine in Nigerian hospitals to improve health care delivery in the country.

The Chairman of UNNICON Group,  Prof. Chuks Ekwueme made the call at the launch of an AI-driven telemedicine healthcare, “MySmartMedic” designed to help improve Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system,  in Abuja.

The group on Monday did a pilot test of the AI-powered telemedicine software, at Galadimawa Village in Abuja, aiming to expand access to quality healthcare in rural communities.

Ekwueme said, healthcare delivery should be convenient, not complicated, adding that MySmartMedic would ensure access to quality medical advice in minutes to everyone, regardless of location or financial status.

“MySmartMedic will revolutionise Nigeria’s healthcare accessibility challenges, with seamless offers, affordable, and secure way for Nigerians to speak with licensed doctors, get e-prescriptions, and receive AI-powered health recommendations anytime, anywhere.

“It will be a very good initiative for government owned hospitals to collaborate with telemedicine providers, by integrating that into it’s hospital management system.

“With a doctor-to-patient ratio far below WHO recommendations, MySmartMedic’s AI system will help to analyse symptoms and recommend next steps, significantly reducing consultation times and improving diagnosis accuracy,” he said.

On the impact it will have in the healthcare sector, he said, “it will reduce cost, gap in manpower supply, increase efficiency, increase reach and reduce stress on government facilities.”

The platform  he said also offers instant doctor consultations via video, audio, or chat prescription refills, drug delivery for seamless medication access, specialist Access for chronic disease management, dermatology, mental health, and more.

“Given the shortfall in healthcare workers, health centres and funding, Telemedicine remains the easiest, fastest and affordable means of offering a certain category of health services to the rural areas.

“MySmartMedic aligns with Nigeria’s digital health transformation goals, aiming to support government and private healthcare initiatives in improving nationwide healthcare accessibility,” he noted.

Ekwueme stated that the inspiration behind MySmartMedic was to offer users/patients a robust healthcare application, that would ease or bridge the gap in accessing healthcare service in Africa, especially when individuals understand how hectic the process could be, due to fewer or underfunded medical facilities.

The Village Head of Galadimawa, Alhaji Musa Barde expressed happiness and enthusiasm about the potential of this initiative to bridge the healthcare gap in Nigeria.

Barde said the initiative would go a long way to help the Primary Healthcare (PHC) in the area to cater for more people in the community.

“I am very happy that you are starting with our community. I will give you my full support to ensure its success,” he said.

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), is to begin implementation of the new Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) for air conditioners approved by the federal government.

The ECN Director General, Mustapha Abdullahi made the disclosure at a one- day stakeholders workshop to showcase project achievements and present the content of approved air minimum energy performance standards.

The workshop was organised by the ECN in partnership with Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),  Tuesday in Abuja.

The Director General ECN, Mustapha Abdullahi said the new MEPS had been approved by the federal government for implementation.

Abdullah said: “I have been informed that the new Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for air conditioners has been approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“The implementation and enforcement of this landmark standard will bring both economic and environmental benefits to the nation as this will lead to energy savings for individuals and national savings for the country leading to reduction in energy demand and increased energy access.

“There is the need to communicate the success made in this project to the Nigerian public, specifically creating awareness on the new air conditioner energy standards, as stakeholders in Nigeria, especially critical stakeholders like the national regulatory bodies, manufacturers and importers of air conditioners need to be aware about the standards.

“As the project nears completion, it is essential to showcase its achievements to stakeholders. This workshop will also serve as a platform to present recommendations for a Waste Management Mechanism for air conditioners and domestic refrigerators, including refrigerant management and disposal strategies.”

He noted that the aim of the workshop include, among others,  to showcase the achievements of the project since inception before national stakeholders, present the content of the newly approved AC MEPS to stakeholders, especially critical stakeholders such as manufacturers and importers of ACs.

Others are to present the recommendations for a waste management mechanism for the management of wastes from air conditioners and domestic refrigerators (including the refrigerant management and disposal mechanism) in Nigeria.

Recycling expert, Mitigation Branch, UNEP, Jose Carbajosa, in his remarks stated that “the United Nations Environmental Programme, under this project, has been very cordial since the beginning of the project.

He disclosed that the Scaling-up Energy-Efficient and Climate-Friendly Cooling in Nigeria’s National Determined Contributions Revision was inaugurated in February of 2022, and is implemented by the Energy Commission in partnership with the UNEP.

“The objective is to align with Nigeria’s climate targets in the nationally determined contributions. Since the beginning of the project, remarkable achievements have been made. Among them is a revision and approval of the Minimum Energy Performance Standards, also called MEPS, for air conditioners.

“The project’s overall goal is to accelerate the use of energy-efficient air conditioners with climate-friendly refrigerants used in residential, commercial, and public buildings.

“Proper testing and enforcement are essential, and to underpin these MEPS and labels and other such policy interventions. With Nigeria’s new Minimum Energy Performance Standards for air conditioners, the stage is set to have 11.5 TWh of energy annually by 2040. This is a game changer for Africa, and it will allow Nigeria to be a leading example in the continent.

” Nigeria is not only lowering costs for consumers, but also leading the way forward. This transition will have a meaningful contribution to meet the climate change targets defined in Nigeria’s nationally determined contribution. In a cost-effective and sustainable manner,” he said.

ITU Seeks Global Collaboration on Resilience of Submarine Cables /2025/02/27/itu-seeks-global-collaboration-on-resilience-of-submarine-cables/ /2025/02/27/itu-seeks-global-collaboration-on-resilience-of-submarine-cables/#respond Thu, 27 Feb 2025 04:12:50 +0000 /?p=1060474

Oghenevwede Ohwovoriole in Abuja

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), has appealed to the global community for collective action and collaboration against submarine cables disruptions and cuts that could slow down the growth and development of digital economy in the world.

The Secretary General of ITU,  Doreen

Bogdan-Martin, who made the call, Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the ongoing summit on Submarine Cables Resilience holding in Abuja, noted that at the moment, the digital economy accounted for the greater part of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP), adding  that it is expected to peak at $16.5 trillion  by 2028.

She explained that global attention should be focused on measures that would sustain the spate of rapid developments in the digital economy sector with submarine cables connectivity accounting for 95 per cent of its backbone.

” The past two decades have seen a vast digital shift, with new socio-economic opportunities as well as challenges. Since the 2005 World Summit on the increasing society, the number of internet users back then in 2005 stood at one billion.

“At the end of last year, we had 5.5 billion internet users. And today, the global digital economy is growing faster than global GDP and is expected to reach 16.5 trillion U.S. dollars by 2028.

” Over the next decade, some estimate that more than two-thirds of the new value creation could come from digitally-enabled companies,

“As our economies and digital innovations grow, and as we seek to bring meaningful connectivity to all, so does our reliance on digital infrastructure like submarine cables. This global undersea network is emblematic of the innovation and the investment required to connect the world meaningfully.”, Bogdan-Martin said.

The  ITU Secretary General lamented that despite the resilience of undersea cables, about 200 disruptions are witnessed yearly, while fixing them across continents and countries are difficult and slow.

She noted that the global economy always feels the impact of submarine cables cuts and disruptions, stressing that “submarine cables are put in place by an interplay of technology, business, and policy that have to be considered holistically.

” That’s why this summit includes a diversity of stakeholders that are essential to this conversation,” she  added.

Bogdan-Martin who praised Nigeria for hosting the event, called on the ITU advisory body, the academia and other stakeholders to work towards a lasting solution to the challenges of undersea cables cuts and disruptions across the globe.

The Co-chair of the Advisory Board for ITU, Prof Sandra Maximiano, underscored the importance of the International Advisory Board for Submarine Cable Ƶ and economy at the Summit, saying that positive developments have been witnessed in the industry.

“It is no coincidence that we are meeting here in Abuja today, given that several cable cuts occurred in March last year affecting multiple countries in West Africa, including Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, and Senegal.

“This incident highlighted the critical importance of subsea cable businesses in this region, with some estimates indicating that over 70 million customers were infected.

“While Nigeria is served by several submarine cable systems, many of which also land in my home country, Portugal, including Maniwari, the Africa coast to Europe, Etihanu, and to Africa, other Western African countries are served by only a single submarine cable,” Maximiano said.

The Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani in his remarks welcomed the ITU delegates to Nigeria, and urged participants to take advantage of the hospitality of the Nigeria.

Speaking on submarine cables issues, Tijani said:” This is not just a technical or industry-specific challenge. It is a global imperative that affects the financial market,  trade, education, health systems, and even governance.

“Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria is committed to strengthening its digital infrastructure and advancing policies that support connectivity, innovation, and economic growth.

“We are taking decisive steps as a nation to recognize and protect the government’s infrastructure as critical national infrastructure, aligning with our broader efforts to enhance digital resilience across all sectors.

This was disclosed in Abuja, Monday at the official launch of stakeholders’ engagement on partnership for capacity building and job opportunities.

The partnership will create 100,000 direct jobs through digital training with different durations depending on the course of training.

According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SBTS, Evelyn Lewis, the partnership seeks to train Nigerian youth with a target budget of $200 million.

“Our goal is clear; to create 100,000 new digital jobs in Africa over the next five years.

“This partnership is not just about skills development, it is about economic empowerment, digital inclusion, and Africa’s competitiveness in the global economy.

“With what we have at hand and what we hope to raise, our target is to raise $200 million for the training of Nigerian youth,” she said.

Lewis stated that the world was rapidly evolving, adding that in today’s digital economy, the ability to adapt and equip people with relevant skills determines not only individual success but national progress.

He said: “We recognise that Africa holds immense talent, yet access to structured and scalable training programmes remains a challenge. This is the gap we are here to fill.

“Together, we are leveraging our combined expertise to create an innovative, scalable, and sustainable model that provides globally competitive training programmes that are not only theoretical but hands-on and industry-driven.

“We bridge the skills gap by aligning learning outcomes with employer needs, ensuring graduates are job-ready, create real job opportunities by linking trained professionals with employment pipelines, including internships, outsourcing engagements, and entrepreneurship support.

“Expands access to digital learning through modern platforms, distance learning, and micro-credentials, ensuring that education is not confined to physical classrooms but extends to every willing learner, no matter where they are.”

In his remarks, the President/CEO, DBI, Mr. David Daser, said the aim of the partnership aligned with DBI’s mandate to bridge the digital divide.

Daser said that the DBI mandate was to bridge the digital divide by equipping individuals with cutting-edge ICT and telecommunications skills essential for success in today’s fast-evolving digital landscape.

According to him, “Over the years, we have trained thousands of professionals, students, and entrepreneurs, and we remain committed to advancing digital literacy as a catalyst for economic growth.

“Together, we will provide high-quality, practical training that empowers young Nigerians to build sustainable careers, launch businesses, and become job creators rather than job seekers.

“The programme will focus on entrepreneurship, digital marketing, software development, cybersecurity, and business management, ensuring our youth are not only skilled but also competitive in the global market.

“Beyond skills training, this partnership will offer mentorship, access to funding opportunities, and business incubation support, ensuring a seamless transition from training to employment or entrepreneurship.

“This is the kind of initiative that will help Nigeria unlock the full potential of its youthful population.”

In her remarks, Aisha Lewis, a partner at SBTS, who spoke virtually, stated that the world’s next leading workforce was already here in Nigeria.

“The question is are we ready to drive Africa’s digital economy?

“By 2030, 170 million digital tech jobs will be added and we want to make sure that African youth can contribute from home,” she said.

In his welcome address, the Head of Public Affairs Unit, DBI, Akin Ogunlade, said that the partnership was a testament to shared vision of fostering sustainable development through education, training, and skills acquisition to compete in today’s global economy.

Ogunlade urged all stakeholders, government agencies, private sector leaders, and the media to support, promote, and advocate for digital skills training as a key driver of national development.

“Through this initiative, we aim to provide young entrepreneurs and small business owners with practical training, mentorship, and digital tools that will enhance their competitiveness and enable them to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s economy.

“Our goal is not just to train but to empower, equip, and inspire a new generation of digitally skilled professionals and entrepreneurs,” Ogunlade said.

The federal government has promised to give all the necessary support to the Raw Material Research and Development Council (RMRDC) bill which is currently before the National Assembly, saying it could attract $30 billion investment in the next decade.

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, stated this at the official unveiling of the Nigeria Raw Material Management Information System (RMMIS), and the e-registratuon portal on Tuesday, in Abuja.

He noted that with the RMMIS portal, the sector would attract both local and foreign investors which in turn will attract an investment of about $30 billion in the next ten years.

His words: “This platform will empower manufacturers with reliable data for local sourcing, reducing import reliance and boosting domestic production.

“It will also attract investors, potentially bringing in $30 billion in investments over the next decade through efficient resource management; and finally, it will strengthen research and development, helping scientists and industrialists explore new product innovations and optimise material use.

“Policymakers will gain access to empirical data for targeted policies that promote resource efficiency and sustainable extraction. If properly aligned with national industrial policies, this initiative could increase semi-processed mineral exports to $9 billion by 2030.l

“With accurate data, the agriculture, mining, and manufacturing sectors can maximise raw material use, fostering job creation and boosting investments by $20 billion in the next decade.

“This will conserve foreign exchange reserves, potentially saving $10 billion annually while strengthening the naira.

“Today, we do not just launch a digital tool; we usher in an era of transparency, efficiency, and resource-driven industrial growth.

“Together, we will build a data-driven economy, where local resources fuel industrialisation, innovation flourishes, and sustainability becomes the foundation of Nigeria’s economic prosperity.”

In his remarks, the Director General, RMRDC, Martin Ike-Muonso noted: “The RMIMS is an innovation developed by the RMRDC with support by our critical stakeholders. It is a user-friendly portal for managing raw materials data.

“This innovation aims to serve as a key resource for investors, manufacturers, researchers and policy makers by providing advanced tools that support research and development.

“It is a robust technology-driven platform designed to enhance data driven decisions, facilitate research and development, optimise resource allocation, drive industry development, support policy and regulatory framework, and strengthen monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.

“The RMMIS covers all critical and strategic raw materials comprising agricultural, solid minerals and secondary raw material.”

According to him, the RMMIS is a strategic tool that will enhance the outcomes of the made in addition of the Africa raw materials summit that will be hosted by the RMRDC, and is scheduled to take place from May 20 to 22nd 2025 by providing accurate and reliable data.

Th Minister of State for Trade and investment, John Enoh, who was the keynote speaker, said his ministry would give all necessary support to the RMRDC to achieve the 30 per cent value addition for improved economic growth.

He also noted that Nigeria was losing huge amounts of money to the underdevelopment of the raw materials sector.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State and his Plateau State counterpart, Caleb Mutfwang, have stated that pay-as-you-go satellite television service is now possible in Nigeria, urging citizens to patronise Luft Tv which made its debut on Sunday.
They both spoke at the grand unveiling and launch of Luft Pay Tv, a Nigerian pay TV company, in Abuja.
Governor Sule said: “I strongly believe that Luft Tv has come at a time that Nigeria misses the most. My understanding of pay tv is actually similar to the story of MTN and Globalcom here in this country.
“When MTN started, they would say that there was no per second billing. But in our own case, the moment Globalcom came, they started with per second billing.
“And today, my understanding of pay tv is a situation where you pay only what you want. So, in a day, I can select that I watch tv only between a certain time to a certain time.
“And so, I have my pay tv for that, because that’s the way I understood it from where I used to pay for pay tv. And just like the demonstrations and all the other speakers have mentioned, at a time like this, when the economy is actually challenging, I need to pay only for what I want.”
He advised the management of Luft Pay tv to be creative so that the content that is going to come from them has to focus on news, on the youth, on sports, documentary, history, and more important, the culture and the media.
“You continue to promote the culture and the media like this. This is the time that Nigeria has reached,” he said.
On his part, Governor Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State said: “I am here because I believe in promoting local initiative. And I think that this is what Luft tv is bringing on board. I know that for industries like the entertainment industry, variety is important.
“Therefore, local news should be encouraged. And we should be able to give people options, qualitative options. At very economic prices, we must be able to share profit with the people who make business profitable.
“Therefore, I salute this initiative and I want to encourage Nigerians to patronise Luft. It’s a great initiative.”
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chairman Luft Pay Tv, Dr. Bright Echefu said that the launch had ushered in a new era of entertainment for Nigerians.
According to him, the pay tv platform promises to deliver the best of global and local content, tailored to meet the diverse needs of Nigerian audiences.
He also stated that Luft PayTv boasts cutting-edge technology, delivering crystal-clear HD quality, multi-device compatibility, and an affordable subscription plan.
“Our services offer an unparalleled entertainment experience, featuring thrilling Nollywood blockbusters, live sports action, international news, reality shows, and a dedicated kiddies’ channel for children’s education and entertainment.

“Our motto, ‘Together Forever,’ reflects our dedication to connecting Nigerians across distances, providing a sense of home and community through exceptional television,” he said.

The Ministry of Petroleum Resources and other stakeholders in the oil and gas sector have called for the full implementation of the 2021 Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) for economic growth.

The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Amb. Nicholas Ella and other stakeholders made the call at a one-day stakeholders’ engagement organised by Young Innovators of Nigeria (YIN) in Abuja

The event was themed, ‘Harnessing the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) as a Catalyst for Investment in Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector’.

Ella, who was represented by the Director, Midsream and Downstream, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, recalled the enactment of the PIA in 2021,which targeted to promote efficiency, boost transparency, and enhance sustainable practices.

“The PIA also marks a new chapter for investors, providing clarity and stability in fiscal regimes, which are essential for fostering both local and international investment.

“In 2023, Nigeria saw a rebound in oil production, averaging 1.4 million barrels per day in the third quarter, a significant improvement from the previous year.

“This resurgence was driven largely by the enhanced operational environment fostered by the PIA, as well as the continued efforts to combat oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

“I encourage all stakeholder, whether from government, industry, investment, or host communities, to focus on actionable outcomes that will maximise the benefits of the PIA,” he said.

According to him, with the PIA, Nigeria is ready to lead Africa in energy investments, attract global capital, and maintain its pivotal role in the international energy arena.

Executive Secretary of Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Mr. Ahmed Galadima, said that they had engaged in human capacity development, research and development for technology innovations and institutional development to support energy transition and gas development initiatives.

Speaking through the Deputy General Manager, Education and Training Department, Mohammed Abdulraman, he said PTDF was committed to aligning its strategies with the key drivers of the PIA to enhance local participation.

“We will ensure that Nigeria benefits fully from its hydrocarbon wealth and the government’s efforts in energy transition.

“We have a comprehensive roadmap that focuses on expanding our partnerships with international research and academic Institutions, oil companies (IOCs), and multilateral organisations.

“This will support skills transfer, enhance capacity building, and integrate cutting-edge technology into Nigerian operations that will enhance the oil and gas value chain,” he said.

On the development of gas innovation and renewable energy research centres, he said they would support the desire of government to meet global efforts on energy transition targets and objectives of the Global Energy Planning Targets.

Speaking on ‘Unlocking Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Potential through the PIA and Leveraging Technology to Combat Oil Theft and Boost Government Revenue’, said technology was revolutionising systems.

According to him, the government could deploy pipeline surveillance and monitoring systems, blockchain technology for supply-chain management, Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence to boost activities in the oil and Ggas sector.

An  official  of YIN, Mr. Gideon Obande said Nigeria needed to ascertain the quantity of crude oil produced daily to be able to track what is being stolen.

“There has to be a systemic address of production level to be able to address the operations to the level where we can be precise on barrels of oil we produce as a nation and track the stolen one,” he said.

Highlight of the event was the unveiling of the oil and gas investment compendium by the Permanent Secretary of  Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

The compendium is to provide potential investors with a comprehensive guide to Nigeria’s oil and gas projects, incentives, among other benefits.

Insecurity: More Satellites Needed To Improve Internal Security,  /2024/10/18/insecurity-more-satellites-needed-to-improve-internal-security/ /2024/10/18/insecurity-more-satellites-needed-to-improve-internal-security/#respond Fri, 18 Oct 2024 00:38:00 +0000 /?p=1022604

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Ibrahim Kana has disclosed that the Nigerian military needs more satellites to improve internal security in the  country.

Kana disclosed this at a stakeholders forum during the ‘Nigerian Satellite Week’ organised by the Nigerian Communication Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited on Thursday, in Abuja.

With the theme ‘Harnessing Communication Satellites for sustainable development’, he

said satellite was key to addressing some of the challenges in the military operations, and that satellite  helps for easy communication and monitoring of movements in various areas.

” With the launching of more satellites, we are going to be having real-time information, real-time imagery.  And we can actually monitor even our enemies and the bandits everywhere, wherever that location might be.

” With the partnership with NIGCOMSAT and with more satellites in space, we are going to be monitoring everything .I can guarantee you that we wont miss anybody coming by our way,” Kana said.

He further stated that the Defence Space Administration has the capability of taking pictures of satellite imagery on all the routes that  troops are available, saying it  enhances operation and reduce casualties of troops.

Kana said the one of the key aspects about the military was communication and intelligence gathering,  adding that without satellite their job would be restricted.

He underscored the role technology plays in military warfare, adding: “We have moved from normal military operation to advanced military operation. We now use drones, and without satellite, we cannot operate our drones.

“Drone surveillance is optimal for overseeing significant events, allowing rapid deployment and comprehensive monitoring to prevent illicit activities and safeguard event attendees.

“NIGCOMSAT is in  partnership with the Ministry of Defence and key agencies in providing digital service to the country.”

The Managing Director, NigComSat, Jane Edgerton-Idehen said they were working to increase their  customer base to dominate the Nigerian market.

“We want to increase our customer base and dominate the Nigerian market.  “We have started the work. So we’ve done our inside work and now we are coming out to talk about it, just like you said. So the patronage can improve.

So we can tell people, this is what we’re doing, this is what we’ve done. So people can see the reason to actually do business with my company.

“We see a future where 70% of our revenue will come from the Nigerian market. We see a future where in the satellite sector.Because right now there are so many private sector operators here. But the truth is a lot of people they serve are actually government agencies,” she said.

Also speaking on the need for Nigeria to have more satelites, Chief Executive  Officer Tetconsult, Mr. Scholars Tayloy said:

“What you want to do is to have the right number of satellites to be able to carry traffic that you need.

“That’s a continuous exercise. Traffic will continue to grow We will continue to do more and more based on the traffic that’s growing.

“You can’t say this is the number, but I can tell you today there must be close to 10 satellites that Nigeria is using for various reasons, including NICOMSAT, including NASA and other foreign satellites.”

The MTN Nigeria Foundation has awarded 13,717 scholarships to 4,949 Nigerian students in 13 years, according to the Foundation Director, Mrs. Aishatu Sadauki,

Sadauki, disclosed this at an award ceremony and alumni induction organised by the foundation for scholars yesterday.

She said, “Over the last 13 years, we have awarded 13,717 scholarships to 4,949 students.

“They have surpassed our expectations by remaining steadfast and dedicated to excellence. Please let’s give them a round of applause.

“To our current scholars, you have shown that obstacles are not roadblocks but detours that lead to greatness. You are now torchbearers and older siblings.

“Learn from our outgoing scholars and lend a helping hand to our incoming scholars. Remember, our Y’ello family believes in you and your ability to make a difference in the world around you.”

She told the scholars that, “education was a powerful tool that shapes minds, fosters innovation and drives societal change,” and advised them to take advantage of this initiative to build meaningful connections and gain the knowledge and skills they need to rise and give back to the society.

Quoting Margaret Mead, she said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

MTN, she stated was driven by this thought for the last 18 years, adding that every individual, irrespective of their background or socio-economic status could be a trailblazer, problem-solver, and a visionary.

NOTAP: Nigeria Must Domesticate Foreign Technology to Solve Socio-economic Challenges /2024/09/13/notap-nigeria-must-domesticate-foreign-technology-to-solve-socio-economic-challenges/ /2024/09/13/notap-nigeria-must-domesticate-foreign-technology-to-solve-socio-economic-challenges/#respond Fri, 13 Sep 2024 01:36:13 +0000 /?p=1010865

Oghenevwede Ohwovoriole in Abuja

The Director General/CEO of the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), Dr. Obiageli Amadiobi, has stated that Nigeria must attract and domesticate foreign technology to address her socio-economic challenges such as unemployment, hunger, poverty and others.
She stated this at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja at the agency’s headquarters to herald the forthcoming 2024 “African Day for Technology and Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs).”

Amadiobi said no nation on earth can develop without adequately deploying science, technology and innovations.

She stated: “Undoubtedly, no nation of the earth can develop without adequate deployment of science, technology and innovation; especially indigenous technologies.

“Additionally, the concept of IPR is derived from the rights conferred on an individual or corporate body by a legal authority to have exclusive control over the exploitation of his or her works of intellect over a stipulated period, exercising exclusive monopoly over the invention.

“Unless Nigeria develops the technical manpower to attract and domesticate foreign technology in various facets of socio- economic activities, it may be difficult for it to meet up with the challenges of unemployment, hunger, poverty, accelerated climate change, scarcity of resource, increased pressure on the environment, youth restiveness and insecurity.”

According to her, in today’s knowledge-based economy and thriving global business environment, absorption of new technology has become a veritable component for companies to survive and increase their competitiveness in the market place.

She underscored the fact that, for a nation state, technology is used as a tool to enhance global competitiveness.
Her wors: “Nations are no longer valued in terms of their population, geographical landmass or mineral resources but on the organic mass of knowledge in its citizenry translated into viable R&D outputs, highly valuable IPRs and commercialized products.

“The Nigerian government has through NOTAP and the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, demonstrated its determination to promote indigenous technologies through the encouragement of the entrepreneurs, researchers and inventors in the protection of their intellectual property and make seamless the process for the acquisition of foreign technology.

“I wish to state that the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology through all its agencies like NOTAP, is working assiduously in collaboration with other stakeholders to create relevant policies that motivate inventiveness to ensure rapid technological development of our country.”

On the importance of the African Day for Technology and Intellectual Property Rights, she noted that the commemoration of the day demonstrates the great importance which African nations place on science, technology and innovation as an engine that drives development.

“With the increasing importance of knowledge as the main engine of growth in this digital era, the decision of African leaders to declare a day for the commemoration of the role of Technology and Intellectual Property in achieving sustainable development in African continent is a positive stride.

“In today’s knowledge-based economy and thriving global business environment; absorption of new technology has become a veritable component for companies to survive and increase their competitiveness in the market place, Worthy of note is the fact that, for a nation state, technology is used as a tool to enhance global competitiveness,” she added.

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Yushau Ahmed, has assured corps members of improved allowances once the new minimum wage is implemented.

He gave the assurance while addressing corps members at the Kebbi State orientation camp, Dakingari and Sokoto State orientation camp in Wamakko.

In a press statement, the acting NYSC Director, Information and Public Relations (ADIPR), Caroline Embu, quoted the Director General as saying: “Corps members have been assured that as soon as the civil servants start receiving the new minimum wage that was approved by the Federal Government, their monthly allowance would also increase.”

He used the opportunity to advise them on the importance of skill acquisition during the three weeks orientation camp and the post-orientation camp training.

“At least learn a skill while in camp and after the orientation course, you continue with the post-camp training.

“Try to acquire a skill that would enable you to create jobs and employ others instead of searching for jobs. We have many ex-corps members across the country who are doing well in their different vocations today.

“NYSC management has partnered many reliable organisations like the Central Bank of Nigeria, Bank of Industry, Unity Bank, Access Bank, NNPC Foundation among others, that have been assisting in giving loans and grants to corps members,” he said.

Ahmed assured the corps members that the scheme would not post any member to a place where their safety is not guaranteed and advised them to be security conscious at all times.

He also stated that their selfless and immense contributions to the socio-economic development of the country cannot be under-estimated.

The NYSC DG implored them to use the opportunity of the service year to develop themselves and plan for greater heights in future.

Presenting her camp situation report to the Director General, the Kebbi State Coordinator, Mrs. Aghata Banki Okolo, said that a total of 1,195 corps members had been registered, comprising 1,077 for Kebbi and 118 that were dislodged from Zamfara State.

RMRDC to Refocus Council for Production, Says DG /2024/09/03/rmrdc-to-refocus-council-for-production-says-dg/ /2024/09/03/rmrdc-to-refocus-council-for-production-says-dg/#respond Tue, 03 Sep 2024 17:16:00 +0000 /?p=1009217

The Director General/CEO of the Raw Material Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muoso, has promised to refocus the council so that it can make Nigeria a producing nation.

He stated this Tuesday during a press conference in Abuja to mark his 100 days in office.

Ike-Muoso expressed his desire to return the council to its original mandate of diversifying the economy through production rather than manufacturing which was not its original mandate.

He said although the council made significant progress, there was the need to return it to its original mandate and make speedy progress within the shortest possible time.

According to him, “While it was indisputable that the council had made significant progress on its mandate, it was also not debatable that its capacity for research and innovation, which are the heart of its calling waned severely. The focus was shifting, albeit naively, towards manufacturing, which was never the council’s original intent. Blue Sky and sometimes purposeless research became preponderant simultaneously with several engagements in ‘beyond-the-pilot level’ manufacturing.

“This background made restoring the council to its traditional calling and glory imperative.

“The RMRDC, operating under the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology is pivotal in driving Nigeria’s industrial growth by optimising local raw materials exploitation, development and utilisation. RMRDC, ab initio, was conceived as a child of necessity when Nigeria was reeling from the throes of global recession and plummeting crude oil prices.

“Therefore, she needed to diversify her economy, strengthen international competitiveness and transition from consumption and import dependency to production and export.

“Our vision is clear to catalyse sustainable industrial development in Nigeria, ensuring that our country maximises its abundant raw materials resources for its prosperity and global competitiveness.”

In order to achieve this, he outlined a five-point agenda, including initiating a nationwide raw material data collection focused on technical and investment information.

Ike-Muoso said data coverage at each spatial location comprised raw material quantities and quality, ease of access to the market by primary extractors and processors of each raw material, the market value of identified raw material, high-level value chain analysis, investment opportunities, government policies and regulations, as well as industry challenges and the level of stakeholder engagement among others.

“This initiative is crucial as it lays the groundwork for our raw material research, supply chain expansion, attracting sustainable investments and fostering partnerships to drive our mission forward,” he explained.

He also promised to increase patents from 40 to 200 within two years and launch e-registration to enhance transparency, adding that: “We are working hard to effectively enhance the intellectual property and patent portfolio of RMRDC from its current 40 to approximately 200 new patents within the next 24 months.

“We are launching an e-registration and certification portal to enhance transparency in the raw materials sector.”

Late Corps Members to Camp Won’t Be Registered, Says NYSC /2024/09/03/late-corps-members-to-camp-wont-be-registered-says-nysc/ /2024/09/03/late-corps-members-to-camp-wont-be-registered-says-nysc/#respond Tue, 03 Sep 2024 16:37:00 +0000 /?p=1009211

The National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) has stated that it will not bend its rules to suit any defaulting prospective corps member (PMS), who arrived their orientation camps late, despite the extension of the deadline.

The NYSC management made this known in a press release signed by the Acting Director, Information and Public Relations (ADIPR), Caroline Embu, on Tuesday.

The statement read: “The attention of NYSC management has been drawn to reports of agitations by some prospective corps members (PCMs) who arrived late to their respective orientation camps for the ongoing 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream 2 Orientation Course, and were consequently not registered.

“The scheme’s policy on mobilisation and orientation programmes is clearly spelt out in the enabling Act and call-up letters issued to the PCMs.

“For avoidance of doubt, the first paragraph of the call-up letters for this batch of corps members stated that registration will close by 12 midnight of Thursday, 29th August, 2024, while the swearing-in ceremony for those who successfully completed the registration process would take place simultaneously nationwide on Friday, 30th August, 2024.

“As an organisation that prides itself as one with human face, the above notwithstanding, when the NYSC management got reports of late arrival of some PCMs in some states, the director general directed that the deadline for closure of the registration portal be extended to 12 midnight of Friday, 30th August, 2024.

“Surprisingly, even after this grace period, videos of complaints by some prospective corps members have again surfaced on the social media agitating for further extension.

“In response to this, the director general promptly visited some camps to assess the situation. He sympathised with the affected prospective corps members but reiterated that adherence to the rules of engagement in accordance with the NYSC bye-laws, (in which discipline, including adherence to the stipulated dates of resumption to the orientation camp), was key.

“He, however, directed that the affected prospective corps members be availed accommodation and feeding before they left the camps.”

The statement stressed that the director general also assured those who made efforts but could not meet up with the registration schedule for this batch, that they would be given some considerations during the 2024 Batch ‘C’ mobilisation.

“While management sympathises with the affected prospective corps members, Nigerians should be reminded that the NYSC is a scheme whose operations are based on the provisions of the enabling Act and bye-laws.”

Cybersecurity: Nigeria to Deploy IPV6 Technology to Track Internet Users, Transactions /2024/08/21/cybersecurity-nigeria-to-deploy-ipv6-technology-to-track-internet-users-transactions/ /2024/08/21/cybersecurity-nigeria-to-deploy-ipv6-technology-to-track-internet-users-transactions/#respond Wed, 21 Aug 2024 03:29:55 +0000 /?p=1005439

Oghenevwede Ohwovoriole in Abuja

The federal government is to deploy and implement the latest Internet Protocol Version (IPV6) in the country to enable the country to identify and number internet users and devices and track internet transactions.

Minister of Communications Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, stated this at a one-day IPV6-Driven Digital Infrastructure Summit organised by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) yesterday, in Abuja.

The minister said the latest IPV6 version would enable authorities to identify online transaction users.

“The IPv6 protocol is the latest protocol responsible for ensuring that online transactions and activities allow authorities to identify users, not just for security, but also to ensure that the system isn’t used inappropriately.

“This is the standard used globally, but only a few countries are on the latest version. Countries like the US, France, Saudi Arabia, and UAE are on IPv6. Most countries are still catching up.

“Nigeria is now one of the first countries in Africa to migrate from IPv4 to IPv6, which means your providers can offer better services, ensure their systems are not easily hackable, and make sure the services they provide are always available by identifying where the traffic is coming from,” he said.

According to him, these are the technicalities of how systems get hacked, describing it as a fantastic move by the National Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and all the partners to ensure Nigeria is multiple steps ahead.

“Some of our companies are now operating on IPv6, but we would like to see it become the standard for every critical service provider within the digital economy space,” the minister said.

Speaking on the impact the IPV6 would have on cybersecurity, he added, “You can’t really do cybersecurity if you can’t track the traffic and identify the sources. Cybersecurity often involves people hiding in certain places to attack the system, but IPv6 improves the country’s capability to track traffic and ensure our citizens are safe.”

President Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6) Forum, Latif Ladid, said Nigeria was at the forefront when it comes to internet use in Africa and seventh in the world. And for that, Nigeria needs to upgrade from IPV4 to IPV6.

“Nigeria is the number one internet nation in Africa, and the seventh in the world. So that shows a sign that the internet is fairly widely spread, and we need to update the current protocol, which is IPV4r, to IPV6.

“Currently, we have only 4.3 billion IP addresses, but we ran back to them in 2011, so the new one would put something like 340 trillion, trillion addresses we have used only now 1/7. for the transit to IPV6, and we have kept 78 per cent of the address space for future generations. If the internet does not change, it can last for a couple of 1000 years, ” he said.

On the benefits of IPV6, he said, “Now, the impact is fundamental, because we are entering into the real internet deployment.

“Currently, the internet is more of a research network, and there’s a lot of business on top of it, but with IPv6, we’ll have a production internet.

“Then, in this case, we have to do peer-to-peer communication, as today, you cannot communicate with another person.

“You have to go through another platform, so be it Facebook or Twitter (X) and others. But in the future, you will have my own Facebook, my own Twitter, and then I can invite only some people to join me, not everyone. I can still cooperate with the social ones, but I can have direct communication, especially for business.

“In this case, you can do transactions directly between people. You can secure all the communication and be able to identify who is who and with whom you are talking. So that will reduce the number of attacks and will solidify cybersecurity.

“This is fundamental, and we had a discussion between the NITDA and the Finnish Straficom, which is one of the unique cyber security centres in the world, that would like to cooperate with Nigeria. This indicates that Nigeria will be at the forefront of using the new internet protocol for a wider aspect of the business.”

The Director General, NITDA, Kachifu Abdullahi, said the investment needed to implement the IPV6 would not be much, adding, “It doesn’t require a huge amount because most of our devices today are IPv6 compatible. The compatibility is there, but what’s lacking is the backward compatibility.

“For example, if you have an IPv4 device, you cannot access an IPv6 device.

“But most new devices are already IPv6 compatible, so what we need is strategy and policy direction because sometimes operators don’t like migrating since it requires them to change a lot of configurations.”

One year after the kidnapping of eight corps members from Akwa Ibom State, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has declared the state coordinator, Mr. Okun Christopher, and his driver, Mr. Daniel Asibong, missing.

They were said to have been missing after they left Asaba, Delta State for Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital and never got to their destination.

The Director, Press and Public Relations (DPPR), NYSC, Mr. Edward Megwa, broke the news to journalists during a chat in his office on Wednesday.

Megwa said: “This is to inform the general public that two officers of National Youth Service Corps got missing between Onitsha and Owerri road on Monday, July 29, 2024.

“The officers, Mr. Okun Christopher, NYSC Akwa Ibom State Coordinator and his driver, Mr Daniel Effiong Asibong, were on transit to Uyo in Akwa Ibom in a white official Hilux vehicle with registration number 27D31FG when they were last communicated with.

“Meanwhile, all efforts to locate their whereabouts have yielded no result till date.

“The scheme is asking the public to bring useful information that will help in locating the missing persons.

“Anyone with useful information regarding their whereabouts should contact any of the 37 NYSC state secretariats, area offices and the National Directorate headquarters in Abuja or the nearest police station or other security agencies for prompt action.”

FG Mulls Standardised Websites for All  Government Institutions /2024/07/30/fg-mulls-standardised-websites-for-all-government-institutions/ /2024/07/30/fg-mulls-standardised-websites-for-all-government-institutions/#respond Tue, 30 Jul 2024 03:22:21 +0000 /?p=999240

The federal government is planning to have a standardised websites for all government institutions for easier access, security and virtual identity.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Tijani Bosun stated this at the 6th Developments in government meeting held  yesterday in Abuja.

Bosun said the country was in need of standardised websites for all government institutions.

“One of the biggest things that Nigerians complain about is the Nigerian government and the fact that it is not easy for them to access information on government service because the websites are not similar in nature because if you look from one ministry to another, the websites look totally different.

“But with this programme, we are harmonising the design so collectively. We are working together to come up with standardised websites of what government websites should look. And as we do this, it’s important, we carry all government IT (Information Technology) experts along because they are the ones who are going to implement it,” he explained.

He also noted that although the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has a guideline for it already, the ministry will work with the agency and interpret it in clear terms.

He added: “Though NITDA has something like that but it’s just a document that describes what your font should look like in text. The colours have been described in the document in text, the visuals described in text.

“It doesn’t work that way; people can’t actually understand it that way. So, this effort is to take the work that is being done to a new level.

“We are taking to the new level by saying let’s open it up and ensure that the people that we serve are actually part of the process for developing this new standard.

“And we are just going to develop new standard that we are going to document; the aspiration is that we should have a web platform from where people can go and actually download those principles, standards and font, to a point where somebody can almost download a complete website for an agency.

“And the work they will then need to do will be extremely minimal. Because we’ve prescribed to them what a government website must look like in Nigeria regardless of your agency. And Nigerians will get used to what a Nigerian government website should look like,” he said.

The minister  further explained that government standardised websites will help citizens to interact more and boost their trust in government activities.

According to him,  the report of the standardised websites for government agencies and institutions will be presented to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for adoption.

“My hope and aspiration is that you are not getting involved just here today that you actually participated in that process because the goal would be to have people work in different sub-groups to design what we want to see and we are going to get experts from the industry as well that will support us.

“And there will be a special advisory board for this project that will review everything that will be done and before it is released it will come back to this project committee because you are the ones that are responsible for this platform, for you to review.

“And once we all agree that this is what the new standard should be for web platforms within the Nigerian government, we will take it to FEC to adopt and say every agency must migrate to,” he said.

The Executive Commissioner, National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) Dr. Vincent Olatunji advised the committee to make sure that as they work on the new template, they should endeavour to consider individual data protection and cyber security.

“As you know, personal data and cyber security are a major component of anything you do; I urge you to make personal data protection and cyber security a major aspect of all that you will do,” he said.

Developments in government is an initiative of the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy which brings together tech professionals in government so that they can chart the way forward for the nation technologically.

The tech professionals meet every month to discuss the nation’s technological advancement.

Ajaka Urges Tinubu to Reshuffle Cabinet, Accuses Government Officials of Demarketing Nigeria /2024/07/30/ajaka-urges-tinubu-to-reshuffle-cabinet-accuses-government-officials-of-demarketing-nigeria/ /2024/07/30/ajaka-urges-tinubu-to-reshuffle-cabinet-accuses-government-officials-of-demarketing-nigeria/#respond Tue, 30 Jul 2024 03:10:57 +0000 /?p=999368

Oghenevwede Ohwovoriole in Abuja

The gubernatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the last election in Kogi State, Murtala Ajaka, has accused government officials of demarketing Nigeria, even as he urged President Bola Tinubu to reshuffle his cabinet

In a statement titled: “My Stand on the Nationwide Protest,” which he issued yesterday, Ajaka urged those planning the nationwide protest over the hardship in the country to give the president more time to fix the numerous challenges in the land.

He also advised the president to reshuffle his cabinet and bring in persons who are ready to work with him to actualise his renewed hope agenda.

“I want to trust that the president will consider reshuffling his cabinet in the near future and bring fresh ideas and people who will key in his renewed hope.

“This could bring fresh perspectives and renewed energy to his administration, allowing for greater progress and development.

“Also, I would like to advise the President to caution or suspend his Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, who is bent on creating enemies for the president than friends due to his utterances on social media.

“It is no secret that our country is going through a period of immense economic hardship.”

The statement added: “As a Special Adviser, Mr. Onanuga should be working towards fostering unity, and ensuring that the government’s policies are communicated effectively to the Nigerian people.

“However, the actions and words of Mr. Onanuga seem to be doing quite the opposite. His rhetoric has been divisive and inflammatory, creating adversaries for the president and his administration across the country.

“The other day, Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive Officer, NMDPRA (Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency) made some frivolous claims against Africa’s richest, Aliko Dangote.

“We must understand that Aliko Dangote is not just a prominent Nigerian businessman, but also a global brand that has brought immense pride and investment to Nigeria.

“His contributions to the country’s economy and development cannot be overstated. As such, it is crucial that Nigeria does everything within its power to protect and support him.”

Furthermore, he noted that the, “the false claim made by Farouk Ahmed not only tarnishes Dangote’s brand but also has the potential to create division and animosity between the North and the President.

“I hope President Tinubu will take the urgent steps to suspend Farouk Ahmed in order to send a clear message that false claims and actions that could harm the reputation of influential individuals or create division within the country will not be tolerated,”

On the planed nationwide protests, he said, “I would like to lend my voice regarding the planned nationwide protest by Nigerian youths in response to the high cost of living that many of us are currently facing.”

According to him, while he understands and empathises with the frustrations and hardships Nigerians were going through, embarking on a protest may not be the right decision for the country right now.

“More often than not, peaceful protests end up in violence and destruction of public and private properties.

“We need to remember that we are a resilient and united nation. We have faced numerous challenges in the past, and we have always come out stronger when we stand together.

“Instead of resorting to a protest that has the potential of turning violent, let us exercise restraint and patience, giving our President, Ahmed Tinubu the time and opportunity to address the issues at hand. We believe in his capacity to deliver and I believe he will.

“I acknowledge that the high cost of living is a pressing concern for all of us, and it is only natural to want immediate solutions. However, change takes time, especially when it comes to implementing long-term reforms that will have a lasting impact.

“ We must trust in our President’s commitment to fixing our country and give him the chance to address these challenges., he is on course, we should not distract his attention,” he said.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has expressed its resolve to partner the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) to train 30 million Nigerians in the informal sector and rural areas on digital literacy as part of its drive to achieve 70 per cent digital literacy by 2027.

Director, Corporate Planning, NITDA, Aristotle Onumo, disclosed this at the 2024 NYSC Director General Community Development Service (CDS) launch and awards on Monday in Abuja, themed, “Excellence in Action: Celebrating NYSC CDS stories.”

He said that as part of the agency’s move to drive the digital literacy programme of achieving 70 per cent digital literacy by 2027, the agency had decided to partner the NYSC to train some corps members in the camp who in turn will train 30 million Nigerians.

“With respect to the partnership we have with NYSC, NITDA as an agency, is reaching out to about 30 million Nigerians who are in the informal sector to empower them with digital technology, digital tools and digital fluency.

“So that they will be able to play their own roles in the digital economy sector and in doing that we believe that partnering with NYSC will become a veritable platform to be able to reach out to the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs), in Nigeria,” he said.

On the programme, he said the launch was intended to be used to reach the entire masses and even those who are considered to be illitrates who dwell in the rural areas have digital tools but may not be able to use such tools to perform some economic transactions.

His words: “We believe that by giving them this knowledge and by partnering with NYSC, they will teach them how to use their devices, teach them how to use simple techniques and become financial literates using digital tools to perform elementary financial transactions in the rural areas.

“In the partnership we will train digital champions (these are the NYSC Corps members) from the camp who we will empower and teach digital literacy and they in turn will teach the people in the rural areas.”

The Director General, NYSC, Brig. Gen. Yushau Ahmed, in his address said that the essence of the awards was to encourage service to humanity.

According to General Ahmed, “The formal launch of the 2024 CDS activities, which is a key highlight of this occasion, is intended to rejuvenate the commitment of the NYSC staff, corps members and other stakeholders to the programme.

“It is pertinent to note that the whole essence of humanity is anchored on the sacrifices we make to better the lives of others and bring about positive changes in our communities. It is through such services that we forge human connectivity, foster empathy and build a stronger, compassionate, and prosperous society.

“Today’s programme reinforces our hope of a brighter future for the country in view of the immense sense of devotion to service and sacrifice for which these young men and women are being recognised.

“The contributions of the corps members to the development of their host communities in the areas of health, education, agriculture as well as advocacy on development issues have undoubtedly transformed them into societal custodians and vanguards, which are the salient qualities of visionary leaders.”

He urged serving and future corps members to emulate what the awardees have done.

“As we relish the achievements of these young patriots, and commend their outstanding contributions, which earned them this recognition, I would like to implore serving and future generation of corps members to emulate their lofty gestures. Always strive to leave your footsteps in the sand of times wherever you find yourselves,” he further said.

According to him, “The Director General’s CDS award was instituted in 2021 to encourage and rekindle the interest of corps members, staff and our collaborating partners in community development activities. It is aimed at promoting healthy competition amongst them. I am proud to state that, this initiative has achieved its purpose.

Senior Technical Adviser, Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs), Dr. Bala Yunusa, said as a government they have recognised the position of the NYSC and had since 2017 partnered the service to provide advocacy and sensitisation to the corps members.

He noted that they recognised that the NYSC has the capacity to extend the territorial reach of the states.”
