The Director General/CEO of Nigeria Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr Abisoye Coker-Odusote has assured Nigerian that the National Identification Number (NIN) would only get better as all the challenges in the process are addressed.

The DG gave the assurance on Wednesday in Abuja at the capacity building event for staff in some of the state offices.

Coker-Odusote, who said the Commission was presently undertaking the training of its entire workforce said Nigerians should expect the best from them after the training.

Represented by the Deputy Director, Training and Development, Olufunmilola Opesanwo, the DG told the trainees that: “it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this important training programme, organized in partnership with our trusted facilitator, Toppy Integrated Limited.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to building a workforce that is not only efficient but also deeply rooted in the values of professional customer service, ethical practices, and organizational excellence.

“As custodians of Nigeria’s identity management system, we understand that our success depends not only on technology and processes, but also on the integrity, competence, and dedication of our people.

“Over the course of this programme, you will be equipped with skills and insights that will strengthen your capacity to serve Nigerians with greater efficiency, empathy, and accountability.

“We encourage you to actively participate, share experiences, and translate the knowledge gained here into practical action in your respective roles.

“Let me also acknowledge the efforts of Toppy Integrated Limited for anchoring this training. Their expertise and professionalism give us confidence that the objectives of this programme will be fully achieved.

“Together, let us seize this opportunity to reaffirm our shared vision: a world-class identity management system driven by excellence, ethics, and service to the Nigerian people.”

On his part, one of the facilitators, Dr. Ibrahim Gaddafi noted that: “The aim of this training is to build the capacity of NIMC staff on customer relations. The last time capacity training of this nature was organized for staff was 12 years ago.”

He added that: “We know that NIMC is the number one agency that manages database of Nigerians. The reason many Nigerians have not registered for NIN is the way they interact or the kind of perceived interactions they have with NIMC staff at registration centres. That was why this training was organized to increase the number of Nigerians on NIMC data base.

“The hallmark of customer service is customer satisfaction and one of the ways to achieve this is through operational efficiency. This begins with the way we attend to our customers; in this case those who want to register for NIN. Some may be aggressive, but we have a responsibility as professionals to calm them down and attend to them in professional and efficient manner.”

Gaddafi said: “My expectations from the participants is that we want them to go back to their respective states and train their colleagues and third party that assist them in registering Nigerians.”

Irregular Migration: 7000 Nigerians Stranded in Libya, Says NIDCOM /2025/08/21/irregular-migration-7000-nigerians-stranded-in-libya-says-nidcom/ /2025/08/21/irregular-migration-7000-nigerians-stranded-in-libya-says-nidcom/#respond Thu, 21 Aug 2025 02:58:26 +0000 /?p=1115323

Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has disclosed that about 7000 Nigerian immigrants are stranded in Libya.
She made the disclosure at the official launch of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), strategic plan for Nigeria, 2025-2027, in Abuja.
Speaking on Tuesday evening, Dabiri-Etewa said: “As we speak 7000 Nigerians are stranded in Libya. At this time and age people still travel by road.”
IOM Chief of Mission in Nigeria, Ms. Sharon Dimanche in her welcome address, stated that the IOM strategic plan for Nigeria was developed by Nigerians and owned by Nigerians.

She said: “We all sat together, led by the minister of humanitarian, budget and economic planning, at technical level, and went through our strategy. And why did we do that? Because for me, it was not about IOM.

“It was about you. That is why I came to this country, for us to sit and serve one another. So, we reviewed our strategy, went into details, reflecting some of those priorities, and what we have here is a reflection of your own ideas, what you proposed, and led by your technical people that we sat together.”
She added that: “This is not just an IOM strategy for Nigeria, it is Nigeria’s strategy supported by IOM, developed through inclusive consultations and shaped by national priorities.”

She also used the opportunity to call on the federal government and all other stakeholders to support the full implementation of the strategic plan.
She said: “We are not just launching the strategy to leave it there, but I’m counting on each and every one of you to implement that strategy together, so that when we sit down three years, five years from now, we can hold each other’s accountable.

“We want to see that difference. And I’m counting on you for your support to make that difference.”

The Deputy Director IOM, Ugochi Daniels, in her goodwill message said, “I’m sure with this team and with the rest of the United Nation team here and the partnership with the government the road might be steep but we will get there.

“What I want to add to that is that the strategy that we are launching today is how we as IOM are translating in concrete terms our commitment in achieving the vision the national development aspirations of the federal government of Nigeria in partnership with all of you represented here and the organizations and states and at the federal level that you represent.”

She assured that, “It is my firm and concrete belief that when we gather again at the end of the strategy we will be able to celebrate not just the achievements from the strategy but the achievements of all of the states that are supported and the achievements of the federal government of Nigeria and the contribution IOM has had to make to this.”

The Minister of state Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, representatives of Borno, Yobe, Abia, Bauchi and others pledged to support the implementation of the IOM strategic plan

Visa Reciprocity: FG Urges US to Reconsider Single-entry Decision /2025/07/10/visa-reciprocity-fg-urges-us-to-reconsider-single-entry-decision/ /2025/07/10/visa-reciprocity-fg-urges-us-to-reconsider-single-entry-decision/#respond Thu, 10 Jul 2025 04:01:47 +0000 /?p=1101393

•Says it places disproportionate burden on Nigerians

•UAE introduces new visa rules for Nigerians

Michael Olugbode in Abuja and Chinedu Eze in Lagos

The Nigerian Government has urged the United States to reconsider its revised visa reciprocity policy, which now limits Nigerian non-immigrant visas to single-entry, three-month validity.

The call was made in a statement issued by the spokesperson in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, yesterday.

This was as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a surprise move yesterday, announced the introduction of stricter visa rules for Nigerian travellers, effective July 8, 2025, ostensibly to further reduce the number of Nigerian passport holders that go to their country.

The Nigerian government’s reaction to the US visa rule was contained in a statement by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

The statement read: “The attention of the federal government of Nigeria has been drawn to the recent decision by the United States Government to revise its visa reciprocity schedule for Nigerian citizens, limiting the validity of non-immigrant visas including B1/B2, F and J categories, to three months with single entry.

“The federal government views this development with concern and keen interest, particularly given the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between our two countries.

“The decision appears misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that should guide bilateral engagements between friendly nations.

“Nigeria notes that this restriction places a disproportionate burden on Nigerian travellers, students seeking academic opportunities, professionals engaging in legitimate business, families visiting loved ones and individuals contributing to cultural and educational exchanges.

“While acknowledging the sovereign right of every country to determine its immigration policies, Nigeria respectfully urges the United States to reconsider this decision in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities.”

Ebienfa further revealed that: “Diplomatic engagements are ongoing, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains committed to pursuing a resolution that reflects fairness and upholds the values of mutual interest.”

Meanwhile, the UAE has introduced stricter visa rules for Nigerian travellers, effective July 8, 2025.

According to the new visa policy, Nigerian travellers between the ages of 18 and 45 are no longer eligible to apply for tourist visas unless accompanied by a sponsor or unless they meet newly defined conditions.

In addition, transit visa applications by Nigerian nationals have been suspended entirely, effectively barring stopovers in the UAE for onward travel.

Individuals above 45 years applying for a tourist visa must now present a personal bank statement for the past six months, showing a minimum monthly balance of $10,000 or its naira equivalent.

In addition, all travellers to the UAE are required to show proof of hotel reservations and sufficient funds (5,000 dirhams) to cover their stay.

This development is expected to significantly reduce travel from Nigeria to Dubai, a popular destination for business and tourism.

This new round of visa restrictions for Nigerian nationals, introduced less than a year after both countries resolved a long-standing diplomatic rift over visa issuance, indicates that the UAE may have foreclosed the assumption that Nigeria is a target market for tourism.

According to updates issued to travel agents, the new rules also impose stringent financial requirements on applicants above 45 years. Individuals in this category must now submit a personal six-month bank statement showing a minimum monthly balance of $10,000 (or its naira equivalent) before their visa application will be considered.

These changes come despite the UAE lifting a two-year visa ban on Nigerians in 2023. The Emirati authorities have instructed applicants and agents to comply with the updated guidelines, including the submission of existing supporting documents such as hotel bookings and passport biodata pages.

Travel industry stakeholders say the new restrictions may significantly reduce travel between Nigeria and the UAE, particularly to Dubai, a longstanding hub for Nigerian tourists, students, and traders. Agents also fear that more restrictions may follow.

When Emirates Airlines resumed operation to Nigeria after two years hiatus, with visa allegedly restricted to only travellers on the Dubai based airline, it was believed that over time UAE would relax the visa rules to make it easier for more Nigerians to travel to the Middle East nation but instead the country has applied further restrictions.

The United States has issued a stringent visa policy for Nigeria under its latest Revised Visa Reciprocity Policy.

The US Department of State on Tuesday announced updates to its reciprocal non-immigrant visa policy, impacting several countries, including Nigeria.

A statement by United States Embassy in Nigeria revealed that with the new policy, which is effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period.

“Those U.S. non-immigrant visas issued prior to July 8, 2025, will retain their status and validity. We wish to underscore, that as is standard globally, visa reciprocity is a continuous process and is subject to review and change at any time, such as increasing or decreasing permitted entries and duration of validity. You can view the latest information on visa reciprocity schedules for all countries at travel.state.gov,” the statement stated

It added that: “U.S. visa criteria and standards are designed to protect the integrity of U.S. immigration systems. These standards are based on global technical and security benchmarks. The U.S. Mission is working with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria can meet the criteria.”

According to the statement, “Examples of standard criteria include:

“Secure Travel Documents: Ensuring countries issue secure travel documents with verified traveler identities.

“Visa Overstay Management: Implementing measures to limit overstays by travelers on U.S. visas.

“Information Sharing: Sharing relevant security and/or criminal record information to protect public safety.”

The statement said: “The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity, keeping both our countries safer and stronger. We commend the ongoing efforts by the Government of Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies to meet standards of international best practices. We continue to engage with Nigerian government officials to address the remaining challenges.”

“Nigerian travelers are encouraged to respect and adhere to the terms of their visas, and ensure travel documents are authentic, accurate, and up to date. The United States remains a committed partner in deepening people-to-people ties with Nigeria via business, educational, and cultural exchanges. We look forward to continued cooperation at all levels with the Nigerian public and government officials to ensure safe and lawful travel between the United States and all countries.”

Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger will Return to ECOWAS, Says Tuggar /2025/06/01/mali-burkina-faso-niger-will-return-to-ecowas-says-tuggar/ /2025/06/01/mali-burkina-faso-niger-will-return-to-ecowas-says-tuggar/#respond Sun, 01 Jun 2025 04:58:46 +0000 /?p=1088528

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has expressed optimism that the three Sahel countries- Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, which recently withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would soon return to the bloc.
This is as the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Memounatou Ibrahima, said Nigeria and the ECOWAS Parliament were working together to fast-track the Abidjan-Lagos highway project, which is expected to create jobs, grow trade, and improve lives across West Africa.
The minister gave the assurance when he received Ibrahima, who led a delegation from the parliament on a courtesy visit to him in Abuja.
The visit was part of the parliament’s efforts to strengthen intergovernmental relations and democratic governance ahead of its 25th anniversary later in November.
“We will continue to work hard towards the success of ECOWAS and all member states, including the three recently withdrawn ones; we are encouraging them to come back.
“As we keep saying, we have not closed the door on their return. We are confident that they will return because they are part and parcel of the region; it is just a matter of time,” he said.
According to him, although the three countries have exited ECOWAS, Nigeria and other member countries would continue relating with them as neighbours and work together in certain areas for mutual benefits.
The minister urged the media to de-emphasise the issues of their unfortunate exit and instead focus attention on the subregion’s economic development.
He also admonished the media and other West African stakeholders to highlight the prevailing positive developmental projects in the remaining twelve member states.
Tuggar listed such projects including the West African Power Pool, ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation scheme, Abidjan-Lagos Corridor, and the Abidjan-Dakar Corridor, among others, that would enhance regional development.
He described the ECOWAS Parliament as an embodiment of the representation of the citizen.
Speaking earlier, Ibrahima told the minister that the delegation visited him to update him on the activities of the parliament over the last one and a half years, as well as its future activities.
She disclosed that the parliament, which was established in 2000, was preparing for its 25th anniversary as a regional legislature.

“We are working on how we can have some capability and enhancement so that we can have more legislative roles in the ECOWAS community.

“We are looking at how we can support ECOWAS in all their programmes and activities,” she said.

NAN also reported that Ibrahima was accompanied on the visit by the parliament’s Fourth Deputy Speaker, Billay Tunkara, and its Secretary General, Bertin Some, among others.

Meanwhile, Nigeria and the ECOWAS Parliament are working together to fast-track the Abidjan-Lagos highway project, which is expected to create jobs, grow trade, and improve lives across West Africa.

The 1,028-kilometre road will connect five countries and bring opportunities to millions living along the route.

Indications of this development emerged when the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Ibrahima, paid a visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tuggar in Abuja at the weekend to seek bilateral partnership with the Nigerian government to facilitate the project.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with the minister, Ibrahima, who was accompanied by the Fourth Deputy Speaker, Billay Tunkara; Secretary General, Mr. Bertin Some, among others, noted that the bilateral partnership with the Nigerian government is also to seek support for other projects being implemented by ECOWAS, especially on how they will benefit citizens of ECOWAS.

The 1,028-kilometer Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway is designed to cross through Ghana, Togo, and Benin and is expected to connect an urban population estimated to reach over 170 million people by 2050.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Drug Enforcement Administration of the United States (DEA) have stressed the need to strengthen current collaboration between the two agencies on the fight against the menace of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

This was the highpoint of discussion during a meeting between the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd) and the Country Attache of US-DEA, Ms. Daphne Morrison, yesterday at the NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja

Marwa, while appreciating the cordial working relationship and partnership between NDLEA and DEA, Ms. Morrison who was recently posted to Nigeria said, â€œI wanted to make this one of my priorities to come meet with you so we can continue to collaborate and work together.

“And thank you so much for your support over the years, and we’re ready to keep things going. I know you’ve been working well with the last Country AttachĂŠ, so I’m ready to get back in and collaborate and do some really great things with you.”

She said efforts are ongoing to organise more trainings for officers and men of the Special Operations Units of the agency while looking forward to a number of joint operations with NDLEA in already identified areas of interests.

In his response, the NDLEA boss acknowledged the excellent relationships with Morrison’s predecessors.

He said, â€œThey’ve been very, very supportive, and I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that it will be the same, if not better, with you.”

He acknowledged the recent evolution of NDLEA in the size of its workforce, expansion of operational and administrative structures as well as remarkable successes recorded in its drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts.

While acknowledging the support received from DEA over the years especially in areas of equipment, training, and joint operations, Marwa expressed hope that more of such support will continue.

“I think we would welcome much more support but because this being your first visit to introduce yourself, I’m not going to bring out a long list of demands or requests, but just to acknowledge that we appreciate all the support we’ve been receiving,” he said.

The Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) has awarded scholarships worth over N200 million to outstanding students across the country.

The initiative, which recognises academic excellence and promotes access to quality education, marks one of the institution’s most significant educational support efforts.

The scholarships were presented during the 22nd Annual National Mathematics Competition (ANMC), organised by NTIC, in collaboration with the National Mathematical Centre (NMC).

It honoured top-performing students from primary and junior secondary school categories while winners, along with their schools and teachers received tuition discounts, cash rewards and educational gadgets.

Fifty two students from primary 5 and 6, as well as junior secondary categories, were recognised for their exceptional performance in mathematics. Over 50 pupils received scholarships and cash prizes.

In the primary category, Shedrack Udeh Jnr. of Diamond Special School, Imo State, won the gold medal; Olasehinde Darasimi of Genius Tonic Heights School, Ondo State, got silver; while Ifeanyi Einstein from Pleroma International School, Rivers State, secured the bronze medal.

In the junior secondary category, Kaetochukwu Uzoewulu of Hillrange Secondary School, Enugu, won silver, while Eghosa James of Beacon of Success School, Edo State, earned the bronze medal.

Winners received cash prizes ranging from N100,000 to N500,000, along with partial or full tuition scholarships.

Teachers and schools of top-performing students also received cash rewards between N100,000 and N400,000, as well as educational tools such as tablets, printers, and desktop computers.

NTIC Managing Director, Fevzullah Bilgin, reaffirmed the school’s commitment to promoting excellence in mathematics and other critical disciplines.

“Our objective is to ignite students’ passion for mathematics from an early age. ANMC is one of Nigeria’s largest mathematics competitions, and mathematics is key in solving real-life challenges,” he said.

Bilgin noted that about 90 students are currently benefitting from the NTIC-ANMC scholarship programme, which is fully sponsored by the institution.

He emphasised NTIC’s dedication to nurturing talents in mathematics, describing the subject as fundamental to intellectual growth and national development.

At the award ceremony in Abuja, Bilgin explained that the competition aims to identify and support students with exceptional mathematical ability.

According to Bilgin, over 10,000 students participated in this year’s competition, with about 100 receiving scholarships and prizes. He stated that NTIC invests nearly N600 million annually in organising the event and providing scholarships.

In addition to academic excellence, he said that the event also celebrated the resilience, curiosity and ambition of the students.

Director of the National Mathematical Centre, Prof. Promise Mebine, represented by Associate Prof. Solomon Gbenga Ojo, described the collaboration with NTIC as a symbiotic partnership that enhances mathematics education nationwide.

“Mathematics is the queen of all sciences. Most students who excel in maths also perform well in other subjects and often represent Nigeria in international competitions like the International Mathematical Olympiad and the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad.”

Among the standout performers was Jammaldeen Mamman Tahir, a junior secondary student of Air Force Secondary School, Lagos, who earned a gold medal and scholarship.

Also speaking, ANMC Coordinator Erdal Yilmaz, said that the competition plays a vital role in discovering academic talents in Nigeria.

“These young minds represent the remarkable potential within our nation, and NTIC remains committed to offering opportunities that challenge and elevate students academically,” Yilmaz said.

•Set to strengthen diplomatic relations with West African neighbour

Michael Olugbode in Abuja

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, arrived in Niamey yesterday, leading a high-level delegation aimed at restoring and strengthening diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger.

The visit marked a significant step in mending ties between both countries which were apparently strained since the July 2023 coup in Niger. Tuggar was expected to deliver a special message from President Bola Tinubu to General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the Head of State of the West African nation.

The Nigerian delegation included senior diplomats, policy advisers, and defence liaison officers. As of the time of this report last night, it was learnt that discussions covered critical issues such as security cooperation, regional trade, economic development, and cross-border collaboration, among others.

This diplomatic engagement reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful dialogue and regional stability.

The relationship between the two neighbouring countries almost crashed after the coup d’etat that ousted a democratic government in Niger, with the Nigerian government leading other member countries of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to place series of sanctions on the country as well as Burkina Faso and Mali who had had their civilian administrations toppled.

The three countries moved ahead to further distance themselves from ECOWAS by denouncing membership of the regional bloc and subsequently forming the Alliance of Sahel States.

Meeting in Niamey, the Nigerien capital on Wednesday the foreign affairs ministers of both Nigeria and Niger, Tuggar and Mr. Bakary SangarĂŠ, respectively, had talks on building on the relationship of the two countries.

In a communique they both signed after the meeting, they disclosed that the engagement was the initiative of both parties.

It read in part: “His Excellency Ambassador Yusuf MaitamaTuggar was warmly and enthusiastically welcomed by His Excellency Mr. Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Nigeriens Abroad, in a spirit of brotherhood that characterises the warm and friendly relations that have always existed between the peoples of the two countries;

“The discussions took place in a climate of great cordiality and provided an opportunity for an in-depth examination of the challenges facing the two countries and major current issues at the sub-regional, regional, and international levels;

“The two countries deliberated on various issues of mutual interest that would foster closer relations amongst the people and government of Niger and Nigeria. Some of the concerns raised were the renewed commitment to revitalise the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission (NNJC), which would further consolidate the gains made so far.

“Furthermore, the two parties emphasised the need to strengthen economic cooperation  especially in operationalisation of cross-border markets, trade and energy, the Kano-Katsina-Jibiya-Maradi railway, the construction of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, Trans-Saharan Highway, Trans-Saharan Fiber Optic and Bilateral Air Services.

“(Others included) local bilateral committees, micro-diplomacy, tariffs and taxes,  desertification, good neighborliness policies, migration, tourism, education, new information and communication technologies, agriculture and livestock farming, and infrastructure. In this regard, the two ministers agreed to cooperate and follow up on these issues through the NNJC as soon as possible.

“During their discussions, the two ministers welcomed the quality of the relations of fraternity, friendship, cooperation, and good neighbourliness that bind Niger and Nigeria, and reaffirmed their shared desire to boost and energise bilateral cooperation between the two countries, to raise it to the level of their ambitions and the legitimate expectations of their respective peoples, who aspire to peace, security, and development.”

On the security front, the two ministers highlighted the terrorist threat raging along the border between the two countries, which constitutes a real obstacle to the effective implementation of all development programmes initiated by the governments of their countries.

Therefore, the two ministers called on the ministries of defense of both countries to continue their security cooperation.

“The delegations expressed their conviction of the need to strengthen social, political, economic, scientific, and cultural cooperation between the two countries and agreed to increase mutual exchanges at all levels, particularly through the regular holding of meetings of the committees of experts, the Council of Ministers, and the High Authority of the Niger-Nigeria Joint Cooperation Commission.

“To this end, the two Ministers of Foreign Affairs have expressed the need to set up a Joint Consultative Forum that will bring together all relevant stakeholders of both countries to address their common challenges and explore further opportunities for the benefit of their citizens,” the joint statement stated.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Nigerien abroad,  SangarĂŠ,  requested his Nigerian counterpart to convey the gratitude and appreciation of the President of the Republic, to the government and people of Nigeria, while Tuggar invited  SangarĂŠ to pay an official working visit to Nigeria.

“This invitation was warmly accepted, and the date will be communicated through diplomatic channels,” the statement noted.

Korean Intelligence Service Lauds NDLEA on Arrest of Wanted Nigerian Drug Baron, Seeks Suspect’s Extradition /2025/04/17/korean-intelligence-service-lauds-ndlea-on-arrest-of-wanted-nigerian-drug-baron-seeks-suspects-extradition/ /2025/04/17/korean-intelligence-service-lauds-ndlea-on-arrest-of-wanted-nigerian-drug-baron-seeks-suspects-extradition/#respond Thu, 17 Apr 2025 03:47:39 +0000 /?p=1074884

Michael Olugbode in Abuja

The National Intelligence Service of the Republic of Korea (NIS) has commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, for its exceptional effort and professionalism in apprehending a wanted 59-year-old drug baron Ogbonnaya Kevin.

Ogbonnaya’s dark career, operating for 17 years underground where he shipped illicit drugs worth billions of naira across the world, was ended in February following his arrest by NDLEA operatives in Lagos.

Ogbonnaya had for years been a pain in the neck of the Korean authorities following the persistent shipment of illicit drugs linked to him to South Korea.

As a result, an Interpol red notice was issued against him, while the National Intelligence Service of South Korea sought the help of NDLEA in tracking and arresting him.

He had served a one-year prison sentence in Korea in 2007 for drug offences and deported to Nigeria in 2008.

After years of being on his trail, operatives of a Special Operations Unit of NDLEA eventually arrested him on 12th February 2025, at his hideout at No. 3, Ibukunoluwa Taiwo Close, off LASU Road, Lagos.

Excited with the breakthrough, a delegation from the Korean Intelligence Service on Wednesday paid the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) a courtesy visit to deliver a letter of appreciation by the Director of NIS, Taeyong Cho.

In his letter, Cho expressed gratitude for Marwa’s support and “the NDLEA’s exceptional cooperation during our recent joint operation, which led to the arrest of Ogbonnaya Kevin Jeff, a key figure in an international drug organization.”

According to the Korean Intelligence chief, “Kevin Jeff was responsible for smuggling significant quantities of narcotics into the Republic of Korea, and the NIS had been tracking him for years.

“I am truly pleased that our two services have successfully carried out the first special cooperation, enabling us to bring him to justice. Without the NDLEA’s invaluable cooperation, those long-standing efforts might have been in vain.

“Once again, I extend my deepest gratitude for the NDLEA’s exemplary service in this cooperation. Building on this significant achievement in our joint efforts against drug-related crimes, I look forward to further strengthening our collaboration.”

The NIS delegation comprising: Messrs Choi Younkwan and Kim Juseok sought for the extradition of Ogbonnaya to South Korea to face pending drug charges.

In his response, Marwa expressed appreciation for the Koreans’ commendation and assured them that the world can always count on Nigeria in the global effort against illicit drug trafficking.

“We’re delighted to partner with you and be of service to you because your Service has a long history of professionalism. We want to give the assurance that at any time, you can count on us to work together with you towards a drug-free world”, the NDLEA boss stated.

He thanked the Korean government for the donation of some equipment to the agency, adding that they “will be of tremendous help to us as we continue to execute our job of keeping Nigeria and the world safe from drug traffickers.”

He said he will study their request for extradition and work within the limits allowed by the Nigerian laws and the bilateral agreements between the two countries.

He expressed hope in the possibility of getting training opportunities for NDLEA officers in Korean Intelligence training institution as part of the evolving partnership.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has arrested 51 irregular Malian immigrants in the suburb of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The undocumented migrants were arrested at the New Nyanya, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, which shares border with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Mali is one of the three Sahelian states that recently exited the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the window of travel without visa for specified period of time for the citizens of the regional bloc are no longer applicable to Malians in Nigeria and other 11 member states of the economic bloc.

The other two countries which exited ECOWAS are Niger Republic and Burkina Faso.

The irregular Malian migrants are aged between 17 and 25 and were arrested at their hideouts, following a credible intelligence, according to NIS source.

Speaking on the arrest, the Nigeria Immigration Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, said 11 of the irregular migrants are females, while 40 others were males.

He noted that preliminary investigation conducted by the NIS showed that the migrants may have been victims of Trafficking in Person (TIP) and Smuggling of Migrants (SOM), adding that none of them presented any valid travel document or residence permit during interrogation.

Akinlabi said they have been taken into the custody of the Service and are undergoing further profiling and investigation.

•Lauds Tinubu, Okpebholo for swift action

•NHRC demands protection for all Nigerians

•Otukpo residents cry out over daily killings

Michael Olugbode, Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja and George Okoh in Makurdi

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has emphasised the need for a transparent legal process, including a public parade of the suspects arrested in the recent killing of some 16 people in Uromi, Edo State.

Yusuf said that would assure Nigerians that justice was being served.

He commended President Bola Tinubu and Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, for their swift response to the killing of the alleged 16 travellers.

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) also condemned the gruesome killing of the 16 “travelling travellers”.

Relatedly, residents of Otukpo Local Government Area in Benue State, yesterday, took to the streets to protest against growing cases of kidnapping and killings in the area.

A statement by Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said Yusuf thanked the visiting delegations for their commitment to securing justice for the families of the deceased and the injured.

The statement said, “The Kano State Government, on behalf of the good people of the state, especially the grieving families of the Uromi attack, who hailed from Torankawa, extends profound appreciation to President Bola Tinubu.

“Also to Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for the visit of the federal government delegation and that of the governor of Edo State in a show of solidarity and concern over the tragic killings of 16 Kano indigenes in Uromi, Edo State.

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who expressed deep sorrow over the heinous act, reiterated his call for justice and thanked the visiting delegations for their commitment to support efforts at securing justice for the families of the deceased and the injured.

“Governor Yusuf emphasised the need for a transparent legal process, including the public parade of the arrested suspects, to assure Nigerians that justice is not only being done but is being served.”

“The people of Kano, and indeed all Nigerians, deserve to see those responsible for this massacre being brought to justice publicly,” the statement added.

Yusuf commended Okpebholo for his engagement with the Hausa community in Edo State to prevent further escalation of tensions and for his commitment to compensating the bereaved families.

“The compensation, which the delegation promised, is a commendable step, but it must be executed without delay to support the grieving families, who have lost their breadwinners,” he stated.

Yusuf also highlighted Tinubu’s prompt directive to security agencies to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of the said atrocity.

The swift intervention by the federal government, he said, underscored its commitment to the security and protection of all Nigerians, regardless of their state of origin.

The statement added, “The governors of Kano and that of Edo, have both committed towards ensuring a thorough and transparent justice process to ensure that such an unfortunate incident never occurs again in any part of the country.

“The Kano state government remains steadfast in its demand for justice and would continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that the families of the victims receive the compensation and the treatment they deserve.”

Executive Secretary of NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, expressed deep concern over the horrific incident, which highlighted the dangers of mob justice and the urgent need for effective law enforcement and respect for human rights.

Ojukwu said, “We commend Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for his swift and decisive action in suspending the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), and banning all illegal vigilante groups operating in the state, but more need to be done.”

Ojukwu said the commission wished to use the opportunity to remind the government and the people of Nigeria that every individual had the right to life, as enshrined in Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, as well as Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

He said the commission emphasised that the freedom of movement, as guaranteed by the constitution and Article 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Article 12 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, had been grossly violated in the Uromi incident.

Ojukwu stated, “We at the commission demand that all the perpetrators be fished out and brought to justice. We call on the government to take concrete steps to prevent such incidents in the future, there is no justification for jungle justice anywhere in the world.”

He emphasised that every Nigerian had the right to life, dignity, and freedom from violence, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, or occupation, assuring that the commission will continue to advocate the protection of human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria.

Otukpo Residents Cry Out over Killings

Residents of Otukpo in Benue State took to the streets yesterday to protest against the increasing cases of kidnapping and killings in the area.

The angry protesters blocked major roads, disrupting movement into the town from other parts of the state.

Although the demonstration was peaceful, the protesters insisted on urgent government intervention and called on security agencies to restore safety to their communities.

A youth leader among the protesters, who desired anonymity, lamented the worsening security situation, and accusing the authorities of failing in their duty to protect life and property.

He stated, “Otukpo is no longer safe. We cannot sleep with our two eyes closed. Our communities are under constant attack by armed men, yet no arrests are made. People are fleeing their homes out of fear.

“Just yesterday, a man known as Akatu Onche (Okakpo ka Achumedo) was shot, and he died this morning. How long will this continue?”

Residents of Olena in Asa also, reportedly, fled their homes following a series of attacks by suspected herdsmen.

It was gathered that the community had been under siege for the past four days, with several people killed and many others abducted.

A resident confirmed that villagers were forced to flee on Monday night when it became clear that help was not coming.

He lamented that the attackers had been terrorising the community unchallenged for days.

NAPTIP, DSS Smash Cross-country Human Trafficking Syndicate /2025/03/26/naptip-dss-smash-cross-country-human-trafficking-syndicate/ /2025/03/26/naptip-dss-smash-cross-country-human-trafficking-syndicate/#respond Wed, 26 Mar 2025 04:59:33 +0000 /?p=1068749

Operatives of the National Agency Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and officials of the Department of State Service (DSS) have smashed a human trafficking syndicate headed by a female truck driver who is alleged to be a staff of one of the nation’s topmost cement companies.

A statement yesterday by the press officer of NAPTIP, Vincent Adekoye, read that a suspect, Hassana Jacob, 33 years old, an alternate female truck driver of a popular Cement Company was arrested along with the Cement Truck branded in the name and logo of the company together with six other suspected members of the gang, namely Aisha Suleiman, Murtala Tanimu, Shamsu Tanimu, Adamu Jacob, Abubakar Ahmed, and Ali Muhammed.

Adekoye said they were caught in Abuja by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) while trying to sell off their latest victim, a 3-year-old girl that was stolen from Damaturu, Yobe State.

He said investigation revealed that Hassana Jacob commands a professional human trafficking syndicate that specializes in stealing children from age 1 and above, selling them to interested buyers at the rate of N600,000 each.

Adekoye said investigation revealed that Hassana, a truck driver with this popular cement company had had several successes stealing children at any of the terminals across the country, evading security checks on the roads, and delivery of stolen children to her gang members at any location without being noticed.

He said it is strongly suspected the syndicate has membership across the country with different assigned roles, with  some members of the trafficking ring, hunting and luring victims to the truck terminal where they will be picked up by Hassana, while others arrange interested buyers at any of the terminals across the country even before the arrival of the victims thereby making it fast for the gang leader to dispose of the stolen child and collect her money.

Speaking on the development, the Director General of NAPTIP, Binta Adamu Bello, while thanking the Director General of the DSS for his sustained support to the agency which culminated in the arrest and smashing of the notorious human trafficking syndicate, expressed sadness over the situation describing it as a heinous crime against humanity.

The NAPTIP Director General who was represented by the Director, Research and Programme Development, Mr. Josiah Emerole, said: “I am deeply sad by the latest arrest. It is painful to note that human beings will organize a criminal gang, use a branded vehicle of a company, move from one part of the country to another, steal children belonging to other families, and sell them to interested buyers whose motives for the children are not known.

“They create everlasting sorrow and pain for those families and smile to the bank after selling those children. This is unimaginable and it is a condemnable act of wickedness. This is more painful when the arrowhead of this evil syndicate is a woman who knows the pain of motherhood.

“I sincerely appreciate the support of the Director General and Operatives of the DSS for the agency in the fight against human trafficking. I thank other sister law enforcement agencies also and I sue for more robust cooperation as we continue to scale our activities to ensure the protection of our children from human traffickers in Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the 22-tired cement truck used to traffic the children has been impounded by NAPTIP.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) said it has noticed some unscrupulous individuals, cyber cafes, and organisations indiscriminately printing unauthorised ‘NIN’ cards and charging unsuspecting members of the public exorbitant fees.

A statement by its Head, Corporate Communications Unit, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, noted that the Commission did not authorise anyone or organisation to print any card in place of the NIMC General Multi-Purpose Card, insisting that: “This act is against the NIMC Act no 23, 2007.”

Adegoke explained: “To this end, the general public and organisations are advised to stop printing any NIN cards against the authorised NIMC GMPC. The so-called NIN card is not authorised by NIMC, and on no account should anyone present it as a means of identification. The security agencies have been notified of this nefarious activity and have been mandated to apprehend those involved.

“Anyone caught will be made to face the full wrath of the law. The Commission reiterates that the NIN slip is the only legal document authorised as a means of identification, and it must be verified upon presentation to access services.”

He added: “To meet the yearnings of the public, the Commission has finalised plans to launch the Improved GMPC, which is multifunctional and serves as a physical means of identification and payment. The card is powered by AfriGO, a local payment platform.”

The Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has disclosed that over 956 Nigerians have been evacuated from Libya, in the first quarter of 2025 alone.

She noted this was achieved courtesy of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Nigeria and the National Commission For Refugees Migrants And Internally Displaced Persons Offices (NCRMI).

She said the breakdown shows that 683 of them were females, 132 males, 87 children and 54 infants, adding that the returnees were brought back home in six tranches from January to March 2025.

She disclosed in a press statement issued by NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, that the six trips include 152 on January 28; 145,180 and 159 on February 11, 19 and 25 respectively while 144 and 176 came in on March 4 and 18 respectively.

The statement revealed that in the last few years, well over 15.000 stranded Nigerians have been evacuated back home by the federal government and the IOM.

Dabiri-Erewa reiterated the commission’s persistent advice to Nigerians to avoid dangerous and deadly migration routes such as Libya, a war-torn country dealing with many struggles.

She said: “Because of the delicate political situation in Libya, we countlessly caution Nigerians to avoid Libya as a pathway to Europe; not just Libya but other irregular routes “

She however urged Nigerians to follow the legal and regular means of migration, noting that some rescued Nigerians from Libya still return to Libya or more dangerous routes to get into Europe.

Dabiri-Erewa stressed that the federal government, will continually uphold the interest, dignity and fundamental human rights of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, irrespective of their socio-economic, ethno-cultural or religious backgrounds.

She called for collaboration with government agencies, NGOs, the media and other relevant stakeholders to join hands in raising awareness on the dangers of irregular migration.

Transcorp Hilton Abuja, in collaboration with Connected Development (CODE), marked this year’s Earth Hour with a series of inspiring activities aimed at raising awareness about climate change and sustainability.

The event, themed “Give an Hour for Earth,” was held at the hotel’s lobby from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM and brought together environmental advocates, guests, and performers in a shared commitment to saving and protecting the planet.

The evening commenced with an overview of the Earth Hour activities by the E-commerce Manager, Transcorp Hilton Abuja, Ms. Ijeoma Osuji, setting the stage for a night of reflection and action.

Attendees were treated to a captivating musical performance by the AMEMUSO choir, whose melodious renditions created an ambiance of harmony and environmental consciousness.

In his welcome address, Transcorp Hilton Abuja’s Hotel Manager, Mohammed Said Khali, underscored the importance of Earth Hour, emphasizing the hotel’s dedication to sustainability.

“We observe Earth Hour alongside Hilton properties and millions worldwide in the fight against climate change. At Transcorp Hilton Abuja, sustainability is at the core of our operations, from waste recycling to energy conservation. We also appreciate our partnership with CODE in raising awareness on practical sustainable living,” Khali stated.

Hamzat Lawal, CEO of Connected Development (CODE), delivered the opening remarks, reinforcing the significance of Earth Hour and its alignment with World Water Day.

Lawal stressed the urgency of transitioning from discussions to tangible climate action, advocating clean energy solutions, community empowerment, and sustainable practices.

“Tonight, we reflect on our actions’ impact on the planet. We must work together to drive meaningful change for a sustainable future,” he urged.

A highlight of the event was a live demonstration by The Upcycling Architect (TUPA), who showcased the potential of plastic waste by creatively transforming discarded materials into functional and artistic pieces such as bags, bangles, and home dĂŠcor items. This innovative display underscored the importance of waste repurposing in environmental conservation.

Adding a celebratory note to the night, the AMEMUSO choir, joined by guests, sang a heartfelt birthday song for Transcorp Hilton Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, recognizing his contributions to sustainability and business excellence.

Another engaging segment of the evening was a youth debate titled “Is Climate Change Good?” featuring three secondary school students from Government Secondary Schools (GSS) Kubwa and Wuse.

The students presented contrasting viewpoints, with one side asserting that climate change is a devastating human-driven crisis, citing evidence such as rising temperatures and extreme weather events.

The opposing view maintained that climate change is a natural phenomenon and that predictive models are often inaccurate.

The debate highlighted the ongoing discourse around climate change, fostering critical thinking among young participants.

A scenic musical procession led by the AMEMUSO choir, accompanied by guests, took place from the lobby to the pool and back, creating a visually stunning and symbolic celebration of Earth Hour.

The event also featured sustainability pledges, where attendees committed to adopting environmentally friendly habits in their daily lives.

The evening concluded with closing remarks from the CODE team, encouraging participants to take individual action towards sustainability.

“True change begins with our choices. Every small pledge counts and it’s our collective responsibility to care for the planet. Let’s strive to protect what we love and gather again next year to celebrate our progress,” the statement emphasized.

The 2025 Earth Hour event at Transcorp Hilton Abuja successfully reinforced the urgent need for climate action, bringing together diverse voices and initiatives in a unified pledge for a more sustainable world.

The  Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered immediate probe into a prison break incident at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State.

He described the incident as unfortunate, and vowed to ensure all fleeing inmates were recaptured, leveraging the service’s robust biometrics and already deployed technology solutions.

Twelve inmates reportedly escaped the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State following an early morning jail break.

It was gathered  that the incident occurred early Monday morning.

Confirming the report to journalists, National Spokesman of the Service, Abubakar Umar, said all the escapees were Awaiting Trial Inmates (ATI), noting that some of them hadbeen captured while efforts were underway to arrests others.

He said all search mechanisms had been activated to recapture the fleeing inmates.

“Twelve of the inmates in our custody at the Koton Karfe medium custodial centre have escaped. They are all on awaiting trial but as I speak to you now two have been captured. We are already working to capture the remaining inmates on the run,” Umar said, lamenting that one officer was killed in the attack.

But the minister, according to a statement by his spokesman, Babatunde Alao, also ordered the Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi, to visit the facility in Kogi to evaluate the situation, and commence a comprehensive audit to unravel the events that led to the incident.

“We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation,” he said.

However, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in an update, said five fleeing inmates from the jailbreak had been recaptured.

The NcoS, in a statement by Umar, said the manhunt was ongoing for the other fleeing inmates.

“The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirms a security breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, which occurred in the early hours of Monday 24 March, 2024.

“During the unfortunate incident, some inmates in a section of the facility manipulates  with the padlocks, leading to the escape of 12 inmates.

“Upon receiving reports of the attack, the Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche MFR, mni, in collaboration with heads of sister security agencies  including the SSA to the Governor of Kogi State, immediately mobilised to the facility, and personnel were deployed to secure the facility, restore order, and initiate a manhunt for the escapees.

“As of this moment, five of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining inmates and bring them to justice.”

Umar disclosed that the Acting Controller General of Corrections has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escaped

“Additionally, a security audit is being conducted across all correctional facilities nationwide to prevent future occurrences. The Service urges members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing any useful information that may assist in the recapture of those still at large. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.

“The Service assures Nigerians that the safety of custodial centers remains a top priority, and measures are being reinforced to strengthen security across all facilities. The NCoS remains committed to ensuring that correctional facilities fulfill their mandate of safe custody, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates.”

Personally confirming the development,  the acting  Comptroller-General, Nigeria Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, at a press briefing said some of the escaped inmates had been rearrested.

He regretted that one of the officers of the correctional service was killed by the escaped inmates but vowed that the remaining escapees would be apprehended.

Nwakuche called on the general public to provide security agencies with all the needed information that would  assist the authorities in the arrest of all the inmates who escaped from custody.

Meanwhile, Kogi State Government has pledged to collaborate with security agencies to unravel the mystery behind the jailbreak at the Medium Security Federal Correctional Center, Koton-Karfe.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the State Government said it received the reports of the unfortunate jailbreak in the early hours of Monday.

According to the Commissioner, “The Kogi State Government has received reports of an unfortunate jailbreak at the Federal Correctional Center, Kotonkarfe, in the early hours of today.

“According to official information, 12 inmates escaped from the facility, with one already rearrested and returned to custody.

“The jailbreak theory is unacceptable to the Kogi State Government as there are clear evidences of internal compromise and collaboration, leading to the unfortunate breach.

“As a government, we have consistently supported federal security agencies in their efforts to maintain law and order across the state.

“The circumstances surrounding the escape, including reports suggesting that the inmates fled through the tower without causing structural damage to the facility, raise serious concerns that necessitate a thorough investigation.

“It is imperative to establish the full facts, apprehend all escaped inmates, prevent future occurrences, and identify any internal or external collaborators who may have facilitated this breach.

“The security of Kogi State remains our top priority, and we expect the relevant agencies to leave no stone unturned in addressing this incident.”

ECOWAS Estimates That 47 Million Persons Face Food Crisis in W’Africa /2025/03/19/ecowas-estimates-that-47-million-persons-face-food-crisis-in-wafrica/ /2025/03/19/ecowas-estimates-that-47-million-persons-face-food-crisis-in-wafrica/#respond Wed, 19 Mar 2025 05:00:58 +0000 /?p=1066648

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has alerted of the danger that about 47 million people in the region could face food crisis between June and August 2025, if actions are not taken to check the current food security situation.

ECOWAS disclosed that at present 34.7 million people require immediate food and nutrition assistance in the region.

The Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture of ECOWAS, Mrs. MassandjĂŠ Toure-Litse, made the disclosure at the opening of the third meeting of the Management Committee of the Regional Food Security Reserve (RFSR) in Abuja yesterday.

Toure-Litse, who was represented by the Acting Executive Director, Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food, ECOWAS, Mr. Mohammed Zongo, said it was imperative that the region strengthens its immediate response mechanisms while consolidating the foundations of sustainable resilience.

She noted that the food and nutrition security situation in West Africa and the Sahel has deteriorated considerably in recent years.

The commissioner while explaining that the nutritional crisis persists in several areas of the region, with global acute malnutrition rates ranging between 10 percent and 14 percent, said: “Analyses carried out in December 2024, based on the Harmonised Framework, revealed that nearly 34.7 million people require immediate food and nutrition assistance.

“If appropriate measures are not taken, this figure could reach 47 million by the lean season from June to August 2025.

“Furthermore, the nutritional crisis persists in several areas of our region, with global acute malnutrition rates ranging between 10 and 14 percent.

“Faced with this worrying situation, aggravated by multiple challenges: geopolitical reconfiguration of the region, persistent conflicts, economic crises, climate change and chronic food insecurity, it is imperative that our region strengthens its immediate response mechanisms while consolidating the foundations of sustainable resilience.

“Food security stocks appear to be key social protection tools, used at different scales -local, national, regional to respond effectively to food crises.”

Speaking on the meeting, Toure-Litse said it, “will allow us to take stock of the operations carried out by the Regional Reserve since March 2023 based on the guidelines of the Executive Board, particularly with regard to purchases, interventions, stock replenishment, technical rotations and the identification of new storage spaces.

“It will also allow us to plan the operations planned for 2025, ensuring that we support Member States in caring for the populations most affected by food, nutritional and pastoral crisis.

“Our discussions and decisions will thus ensure transparency, efficiency and fairness in the management of the Reserve, while adapting it to present and future challenges.

“As you know, for almost 10 years, our actions have been part of the regional storage strategy. We have learned many lessons by comparing the theory of the regional storage strategy with the practice of its implementation on the ground. We are also facing new challenges related to the changing socio-political context in our region and at the global level.

“This is why we must adjust this strategy and the operating rules of the Regional Reserve in the aim of strengthening the coordination and effectiveness of our collective action.”

In his remarks, Nigeria’s Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari said the food challenge was a reminder of the urgent need to strengthen strategies and response instruments to effectively deal with the food and nutrition crisis affecting the region.

Kyari, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, insisted that the food reserve has become an essential pillar of the region’s collective strategy for responding to food and nutrition crisis.

He said: “This meeting is taking place at a particularly worrying moment for our region  it is a common knowledge globally especially in West Africa and Sahel; that food security situation has worsened in the recent years due to conflicts, economic instability and devastating impact of climate change. A situation compounded by a decline in funding, geopolitical concerns in the region and general lack of access to food.  This, according to the recent cadre Harmonise report (December 2024), has made nearly 34 7 million people in dire need of immediate food and nutritional assistance.

“These major challenges remind us of the urgent need to strengthen our strategies and response instruments to effectively deal with food and nutrition crisis affecting our region.

“They also alert us on the growing need for sovereign financing of our agriculture in general and our response mechanisms to food crises in particular.

“This therefore calls for a deliberate concerted effort to address food production, strategic food storage, markets and price volatility as well as re-strategise for the regional body especially in the administration and management of the regional food security reserve.”

The Regional Food Security Reserve, established in 2013 by the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, supports the region’s member states, Chad, and Mauritania, in managing food crises.

Dandaura disclosed that an intensive undercover and investigative operation was carried out in synergy with sister security agencies and Tantita, which led to successful tracking and arrest of the 17 suspects.

He said: “We mounted a round the clock and relentless onslaught against the suspects in collaboration with sister security agencies and the Tantita Security and succeeded in smashing the 17 deadly sea pirates led by a notorious vandal, kidnapper and armed robber called Ziakede Amatu, who hails from Norgbene community in Ekeremo, Bayelsa State and has been terrorizing the community and all neighbouring states.

“From our preliminary investigation carried out by the Commandant General Special Intelligence Squad, the suspects volunteered the following information stating that the same syndicate launched attack against the State Honourable Minister of Petroleum, Hon.
