The Numeruno Charity Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering children and young people through a holistic approach that combines educational support with mental health and emotional development.

Founded by author, media personality and philanthropist Sandra Oluwatosin Eshemokai Odufaderen, the foundation said its interventions are designed to address both the financial and emotional challenges confronting many children and youths, particularly those from underserved communities.

According to the foundation, its programmes go beyond conventional charity by focusing on the overall development of beneficiaries, with the belief that academic success is closely linked to emotional well-being and a supportive environment.

Sandra said the foundation was established on the conviction that children are better equipped to succeed when their educational, emotional and psychological needs are addressed simultaneously.

To reduce barriers to education, the foundation provides scholarships for children from low-income families, financial assistance for educational expenses such as textbooks, examination fees and stationery, as well as school uniforms and other essential clothing to help restore the confidence and dignity of beneficiaries.

She explained that the organisation also places strong emphasis on mental health advocacy, noting that many young people struggle with emotional challenges that often go unnoticed.

As part of its intervention, the foundation organises workshops on mental health and emotional intelligence, where children and youths are taught self-awareness, emotional regulation, anxiety management, empathy and other life skills aimed at building resilience.

Sandra said the initiative seeks to encourage open conversations about mental health while helping to reduce the stigma often associated with emotional and psychological challenges.

Beyond educational and emotional support, the foundation operates a mentorship programme that connects vulnerable children and young people with experienced professionals and role models who provide career guidance, personal development support and encouragement.

According to Sandra, the objective is to equip beneficiaries with the confidence, knowledge and resilience needed to achieve their goals and break cycles of poverty.

“We are not just funding students; we are cultivating complete, resilient human beings,” she said.

She added that the foundation remains committed to expanding its programmes and creating sustainable opportunities that will enable children and youths to thrive academically, emotionally and socially.

From Classroom to Financial Independence: Lambert introduces Teenagers’ Economic Empowerment Movement /2026/06/26/from-classroom-to-financial-independence-lambert-introduces-teenagers-economic-empowerment-movement/ /2026/06/26/from-classroom-to-financial-independence-lambert-introduces-teenagers-economic-empowerment-movement/#respond Thu, 25 Jun 2026 23:36:00 +0000 /?p=1219493

The founder of the Compassionate Capitalism Economic System (CCES), King Charles Lambert, has unveiled the Teenagers Economic Empowerment Movement (TEEM), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at equipping African teenagers with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities needed to achieve financial independence from an early age. The movement seeks to transform how young Africans engage with economic activity by introducing practical work experience, financial literacy, and personal development to teenagers while they are still in school.

Speaking about the idea, King Lambert said the initiative was created to challenge a long-standing culture across much of Africa where young people are encouraged to focus solely on academics and postpone economic participation until adulthood. According to him, many teenagers complete their education without understanding how money works, how wealth is created, or how to manage personal finances. TEEM, he explained, is designed to bridge this gap and raise a generation of financially informed and economically productive young Africans.

Lambert noted that while children in many parts of the world are introduced to concepts such as saving, entrepreneurship, and responsibility at an early age, African teenagers are often excluded from these experiences. He argued that this has contributed to widespread dependency among young adults who enter the workforce without practical financial knowledge. Through TEEM, participants will be introduced to economic responsibility long before they reach adulthood, giving them a stronger foundation for future success.

The program targets teenagers between the ages of 17 and 19, providing them with opportunities to work as Contractor Assistants on the Compassionate Capitalism Economic System platform. In these roles, participants will assist professionals such as educators, project managers, digital marketers, online vendors, and other service providers. By supporting real projects, teenagers will gain hands-on experience while earning income and developing valuable workplace skills.

According to the CCES founder, the movement is carefully structured to complement formal education rather than compete with it. Participants are expected to devote only a few hours after school to their assigned responsibilities, ensuring that academic performance remains a priority. Alongside practical work experience, teenagers will receive training in financial literacy, money management, accountability, and value creation, helping them develop habits that can serve them throughout their lives.

Parents are also expected to benefit significantly from the program. TEEM encourages teenagers to begin handling small personal expenses such as school supplies, internet subscriptions, and learning materials, thereby easing some of the financial pressure on households. Beyond the economic benefits, the movement seeks to keep young people positively engaged, reducing exposure to negative influences and encouraging discipline, focus, and purposeful living.
King Lambert linked TEEM to broader concerns about Africa’s economic development, pointing out that despite a population exceeding 1.4 billion people, the continent’s economic output remains comparable to that of the United Kingdom, which has fewer than 70 million people. He argued that one of the reasons for this disparity is the underutilization of Africa’s youthful population. According to him, sustainable economic growth cannot be achieved unless young people are empowered to contribute productively from an earlier age.

Describing the initiative as a “generational shift,” King Charles Lambert called on parents, educators, and community leaders to support the movement and encourage greater participation among young people. He emphasized that preparing teenagers for financial independence is not simply about earning money but about building confidence, responsibility, and economic awareness. The movement is also expanding opportunities through the Teenagers Economic Empowerment Movement (TEEM), which offers older teenagers aged 17 to 19 the chance to serve as Contractor Assistants while gaining practical work experience, income opportunities, and life skills. Lambert concluded that Africa’s future prosperity depends on how effectively it prepares its youth today, stressing that “the future belongs to those who are prepared, and preparation begins now.”

TIBA to graduate cohorts, launch mini MBA programme /2026/06/24/tiba-to-graduate-cohorts-launch-mini-mba-programme/ /2026/06/24/tiba-to-graduate-cohorts-launch-mini-mba-programme/#respond Wed, 24 Jun 2026 11:02:00 +0000 /?p=1218843

The Iconic Brand Africa (TIBA) Academy has announced the graduation of its cohorts, which it says are the next generation of job-ready professionals.

The founder of TIBA, Omobabinrin Adeola Osideko, made the announcement on Thursday while speaking about the future of work in Africa and how the organisation is producing professionals who are impacting the labour market.

Osideko said that, these days, employers are not looking for certificates alone but also for competence, adaptability, and practical skills.

“Over the past few years, we have been committed to bridging the gap between education and employability by equipping individuals with practical, in-demand skills that lead to meaningful careers and lasting impact,” she said.

She noted that through their Job Ready Certification (JRC), TIBA MentoQuest, and the TIBA Accelerate Programme, they have empowered hundreds of learners with the skills, confidence, and professional mindset required to thrive in today’s competitive workplace.

Speaking about the graduating cohorts of their Job Readiness Certification programme, she stated that, unlike traditional learning approaches that focus heavily on theory, TIBA Academy emphasises real-world application.

According to her, the cohorts were trained in business development and sales strategy, public speaking, AI productivity and business automation, content creation and social media management, graphic design and branding, customer experience and relationship management, digital business and marketing, corporate communications and executive writing, leadership and board readiness, personal branding, and LinkedIn management.

“Learners are trained in emerging fields and non-coding technology careers. These are skills that are increasingly shaping the future of work and opening doors to rewarding career opportunities across industries,” she said.

Osideko said they have demonstrated in their graduating cohorts that the right skills and mentorship can transform lives.

“For TIBA Academy, graduation is not the end of a journey; it is the beginning of greater possibilities,” she said.

The TIBA boss further said the graduation will celebrate resilience, growth, transformation, and the emergence of a new generation of African professionals, who are equipped to compete and succeed globally.

Osideko described the mini MBA programme that will be launched next Saturday as a practical and transformative programme for professionals, entrepreneurs, and corporate leaders seeking a deeper understanding of business, leadership, finance, strategy, and innovation.

She said the programme offers more than a certificate, adding, “It offers real-world insights and practical tools for effective career and professional life, and also a gateway to business excellence, leadership mastery, and global relevance.”

Anietie Udoh, Director of Marketing at Marketing Edge, has secured a major international milestone with his appointment to the jury of the New York Festivals (NYF) Advertising Awards, one of the world’s most respected platforms for creative excellence.

Udoh’s selection is particularly significant as he stands as the only Nigerian on the 2026 NYF International Shortlist Jury—an elite panel comprising more than 300 top-tier executives and award-winning creatives drawn from 43 countries across six continents.

The NYF Shortlist Jury represents the first and most critical stage in the awards’ judging process, evaluating entries across a wide range of categories and determining which works advance to the final rounds. As such, Udoh’s role places him among a select group of global decision-makers shaping the direction of modern advertising and marketing.

His appointment also highlights the growing recognition of Nigerian and African marketing expertise on the global stage. While countries such as South Africa boast multiple representatives on the jury, Udoh’s position underscores his unique standing as Nigeria’s sole representative in this influential global forum.

Beyond NYF, Udoh’s selection reflects a consistent pattern of international recognition. He has served on several high-profile global juries, including the SABRE Awards EMEA, International ECHO Awards, Effie Awards South Africa, AME Awards Grand Jury, and the Native Advertising Awards. These appointments span key areas such as public relations, marketing effectiveness, data-driven campaigns, and branded content, reinforcing his reputation as a well-rounded industry leader with global relevance.

Industry observers note that such repeated inclusion in international juries is a strong endorsement of Udoh’s expertise, credibility, and strategic insight, placing him alongside some of the most respected voices in global marketing and communications.

For Nigeria, his appointment represents more than individual achievement. It signals the country’s increasing influence in global creative and marketing conversations, while also opening doors for broader African participation in top-tier industry platforms.

As the NYF Awards progress toward their final judging stages in New York, Udoh’s presence on the jury is expected to contribute not only to the evaluation of world-class work but also to the continued elevation of African perspectives in shaping global standards of creativity and effectiveness.

OPay Launches XtraCova to Strengthen Consumer Trust in Digital Finance /2026/03/16/opay-launches-xtracova-to-strengthen-consumer-trust-in-digital-finance/ /2026/03/16/opay-launches-xtracova-to-strengthen-consumer-trust-in-digital-finance/#respond Sun, 15 Mar 2026 23:00:00 +0000 /?p=1184897

Reaffirming its commitment to Nigeria’s financial ecosystem and regulatory compliance, OPay has launched XtraCova, a new protection product that reimburses users for verified unauthorised transactions on the platform.

The product launch reaffirms OPay’s customer-first philosophy and its ongoing effort to build trust in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital payment landscape.

XtraCova provides coverage of up to ₦5,000,000 per validated claim when funds are withdrawn from a user’s account without their knowledge or consent. The product focuses strictly on unauthorised deductions that meet established verification and reporting requirements.

Coverage applies to two primary situations. The first involves platform-side failures, including system vulnerabilities or infrastructure security breaches that allow unauthorised transactions to occur. The second involves external criminal activity, such as phishing attacks, identity theft, malware intrusion, or unauthorised access caused by stolen devices.

Once a claim is submitted, OPay carries out a detailed verification process to determine whether the transaction was genuinely unauthorised. If the investigation confirms the claim and policy conditions are satisfied, reimbursement is provided.

Elizabeth Wang, Chief Commercial Officer, OPay, said;

“Protecting our customers’ money is our highest responsibility. As a company that has served millions of Nigerians over the years, we understand that trust is the foundation of digital finance. XtraCova reaffirms our commitment to continuously invest in security, comply with regulatory standards, and build solutions that truly protect our users. With this product, customers can use OPay knowing that if an unauthorised transaction happens and it is verified, we are ready to stand behind them.”

With XtraCova, OPay continues to demonstrate its leadership in consumer protection while supporting the growth of a safer and more reliable digital financial ecosystem in Nigeria.

XtraCova is available directly within the OPay mobile application. Users can access the feature by opening the OPay app and navigating to the Security Center section.

Beyond the Talk: What the “No Be Cho Cho Cho” Moment Says About Nigeria’s Fintech Maturity /2026/03/11/beyond-the-talk-what-the-no-be-cho-cho-cho-moment-says-about-nigerias-fintech-maturity/ /2026/03/11/beyond-the-talk-what-the-no-be-cho-cho-cho-moment-says-about-nigerias-fintech-maturity/#respond Wed, 11 Mar 2026 13:08:00 +0000 /?p=1183757

Mary Nnah

Nigeria’s fintech revolution has reached an interesting stage of maturity. What began a decade ago as a burst of entrepreneurial experimentation has become a central pillar of the country’s economic infrastructure. Digital transfers now move billions of naira daily. Payments that once required queues at bank counters are completed in seconds through mobile devices.

Yet the growth of the sector has also produced a new set of expectations. As more Nigerians depend on digital platforms for everyday transactions, reliability, transparency and cost have become central questions. The excitement that once surrounded fintech innovation is gradually giving way to something more practical: the demand for services that work consistently and predictably.

It was against this backdrop that Smartcash Payment Service Bank recently introduced a new national communications campaign built around a phrase familiar to many Nigerians: “No Be Cho Cho Cho.”

The phrase, drawn from everyday street language, refers to talk that is not supported by action. By placing it at the centre of its messaging, Smartcash appears to be acknowledging a sentiment that has become increasingly common among users of digital financial services. Nigerians have heard the promises. What they request now is proof.

At the launch event in Lagos, the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ayotunde Kuponiyi, framed the campaign as a response to this shift in public expectations.

“Cho cho cho is a phrase Nigerians understand immediately,” Kuponiyi told guests at the media launch. “It means plenty of talk without results. Our message is simple: Smartcash is not about talk. Smartcash is about showing the evidence.”

That emphasis on evidence reflects the scale the digital payments sector has now attained. Financial technology in Nigeria is no longer an emerging curiosity. It has become embedded in the routines of households and businesses alike. Traders in open markets, university students, small manufacturers and salaried professionals all depend on digital tools to move money quickly and safely.

Within this context, the credibility of fintech platforms carries real economic implications. When a digital payment fails or a transfer is delayed, the disruption extends beyond inconvenience. It can interrupt supply chains, delay school payments or stall the operations of small enterprises.

Smartcash’s leadership argues that the next phase of fintech competition will be determined by platforms capable of delivering dependable infrastructure at scale.

The company’s own growth provides some indication of how quickly the digital finance landscape is expanding. Smartcash now reports nearly three million active wallets, a figure that reflects the steady migration of Nigerian consumers toward app-based financial services and mobile wallets.

Several of the platform’s product features are designed to address long-standing complaints from users of digital payment systems. One example is its zero-charge policy on transfers and bill payments, an approach that seeks to eliminate the small but persistent transaction fees that many consumers encounter when moving money between accounts.

Another offering is Smart Saver, a savings product that provides 15 percent annual interest compounded daily, allowing users to accumulate returns on deposits while maintaining access to their funds.

For Kuponiyi, these features form part of a broader philosophy about the role of digital finance in national development.

“Financial inclusion is a critical pillar of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” he said during the launch. “What we are building with Smartcash is infrastructure that allows millions of Nigerians to participate fully in the economy. From corporate professionals to the previously unbanked, our goal is to move people from the financial sidelines to the centre stage.”

The institutional structure behind the platform also reflects an attempt to combine technological innovation with established infrastructure. Smartcash operates as a Payment Service Bank licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is built on the telecommunications backbone of Airtel Nigeria, part of the Airtel Africa Group, which operates across fourteen countries.

This arrangement allows the service to reach users through several channels. Customers with smartphones interact through a mobile application, while those without smartphones can still access services through USSD banking and agent networks distributed across communities.

Such hybrid models have become increasingly important in Nigeria’s financial ecosystem. While mobile internet penetration continues to expand, large segments of the population still rely on basic phones or prefer in-person transactions conducted through local agents.

The result is a financial services landscape that blends digital platforms with human networks, creating multiple entry points for consumers who might otherwise remain outside the formal banking system.

Beyond product features and infrastructure, the broader significance of the Smartcash campaign lies in the message it sends about the evolution of Nigeria’s fintech industry.

The early years of the sector were characterised by bold visions and energetic marketing. Startups competed to introduce new applications and payment solutions, often accompanied by sweeping claims about the transformation of finance.

Today, the conversation appears to be shifting. As the industry grows larger and more integrated into everyday economic life, credibility and operational resilience are becoming more valuable than slogans.

Consumers who rely on digital payments every day expect platforms that are transparent about their charges, reliable during peak usage and responsive when problems occur.

In that sense, the language of “No Be Cho Cho Cho” may be capturing a thought deeper than a marketing line. It reflects a stage in Nigeria’s fintech journey where performance matters more than promise.

For a sector that thrives on innovation, that may prove to be its most important evolution yet.

King Appolus Chu Unveils New Roads, Displaces Kidnappers, Drives Eleme’s Transformation /2026/03/02/king-appolus-chu-unveils-new-roads-displaces-kidnappers-drives-elemes-transformation/ /2026/03/02/king-appolus-chu-unveils-new-roads-displaces-kidnappers-drives-elemes-transformation/#respond Mon, 02 Mar 2026 00:03:00 +0000 /?p=1180408

Eleme, Rivers State, is witnessing a remarkable transformation under the leadership of His Royal Highness, King Appolus Chu. The monarch’s ambitious road network project has opened up previously inaccessible areas, boosting economic activities and improving security.

The new roads have made it easier for residents to move around, farm, and conduct businesses without fear. Property values have skyrocketed, and the community is attracting investors. The roads have displaced kidnappers and other criminal elements, making the area safer.

The official tour of the newly created road network held on February 15th, 2026, in Eleme, Rivers State, showcased the monarch’s efforts to boost economic activities and improve security in the region.

Speaking on the drive behind the initiative, King Appolus Chu said, “It has been a place where people couldn’t farm for almost 30 to 40 years. There wasn’t any farmland on these routes because of kidnappers – that is where they kept their victims. You couldn’t go there because there were no routes for patrols. So, someone would become a victim in that captivity. This bothered my heart and the community’s heart. We had to make a sacrifice and open these roads. Now, the kidnappers have left on their own. We fought the criminals diplomatically without confrontation.”

King Appolus Chu’s plans for Eleme are ambitious. He envisions a future where the community is safe, accessible, and economically vibrant. “We are in phase five now. We want to develop the marked areas. We are not stopping, we’ll continue. The goal is to ensure the community is safe, accessible, and economically vibrant. We will keep working towards that. We will create more jobs, improve infrastructure, and enhance the overall quality of life for our people. It is a big task, but we are up for it,” he said.

As the king looks to the future, he is optimistic about the transformation of Eleme. “I’m hoping that in the next 15 to 20 years, when you come back here, you won’t recognize the place again,” he said with a smile. “There are many people that God would have used to achieve this dream. That He chose me is my honour and privilege. I call on our people to do the little they can in supporting the government to make life better for us, rather than leaving everything for the government alone.”

The Etsu Nupe, HRH Alhaji (Dr.) Yahaya Abubakar CFR, was present at the inspection as a special guest of honor. He praised King Appolus Chu’s contributions to national development, saying, “The more we have roads, the nearer we will be to each other, and the better our economic activities will be. These roads will empower many people and enhance their lives. We thank His Royal Highness, King Appolus Chu, for his wisdom and efforts in developing the community, not just through roads, but also economically.”

He added that the roads would make it easier for locals to transport goods, like tomatoes and potatoes, to markets in Port Harcourt, boosting economic growth. “Making these roads goes a long way in actually enhancing and empowering many people,” he said, thanking King Appolus Chu for his vision and leadership.

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, praised King Appolus Chu’s initiative, saying, “Our farmers in Nigeria are women. These are farmlands, and this project allows access to farm land and will strengthen Nigeria’s food security. We applaud him for this.”

She highlighted the impact on women’s safety, “In the past, women were raped on these farms due to a lack of access. Now, they’ll be safer and more productive.” Sulaiman-Ibrahim urged other entities, like NDDC and the Ministry of Regional Development, to support the project, enhancing security and productivity.

She commended the king’s initiative, looking forward to partnering to create a women’s agro zone, garment factories, and attract investors. “Eleme is ready for investors,” she said, highlighting the potential for growth and development in the area.

Eleme LGA Chairman, Obarilomate Olor, praised King Appolus Chu’s development efforts, saying, “This new city he’s creating shows his philanthropic spirit and generosity. He’s a large-hearted person, loved by his people, and has their support.”

King (Dr.) Philip Osaro Obele, the Oneh Eh-Eleme, praised King Appolus Chu’s efforts, saying, “The very road we are standing on now is the original road right from the time of our origin. And this is the farm road. From what we are seeing here now, we know that our people were passing through difficulty. And that is why there were a lot of kidnappings and killings on this road when people went to the farm. As you are going around, there is no farm you have seen here because people were not farming because of the fear of being kidnapped. With what he has done now, opening up all the forests here, all this land will now be utilized. And as we are moving around, you see expansion of the community, growth of the community and development of the community. He has done very well.
‘Look at his age, and he has done all these. He may not be the one who is so rich. But the little God has given to him, he has the mind to say every person should benefit from. So, it is a great thing he is doing to open up the area to deliver the people and save the people from marauders”, King Obele noted.

Former Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, commended King Appolus Chu’s efforts, noting, “I call on the Ministry of Regional Development to step in, reinforce, and tar these roads. The community will greatly benefit from this. This is amazing, wonderful, and excellent work.”

Dr. Meshack Congo Maichibi lauded King Appolus Chu’s initiative, saying, “This isn’t the first time he’s done something like this. Opening this city is a huge step, showing his vision for a bigger community tomorrow. This route will attract investors, especially from the north, creating opportunities for people here.”

The road project, when completed, will undoubtedly create a lasting legacy that will continue to pave the way for economic progress and development in Eleme. As one resident put it, “This is not just a road; it’s a lifeline to a brighter future.

Joy, Emotions as Chibok Girl, 54 Others Resume at Isaac Balami University /2026/03/02/joy-emotions-as-chibok-girl-54-others-resume-at-isaac-balami-university/ /2026/03/02/joy-emotions-as-chibok-girl-54-others-resume-at-isaac-balami-university/#respond Sun, 01 Mar 2026 23:35:00 +0000 /?p=1180588

There were scenes of joy and deep emotion over the weekend as a Chibok girl and 54 other students from various Local Government Areas of Borno State resumed at the Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management (IBUAM), Lagos.

The emotional ceremony, which marked the students’ departure to Lagos, ended with a colourful reception at the 7 Stars Global Hangar, where the university formally received them into its specialised aviation programme.

One of the highlights of the event was the inclusion of a Chibok girl, Ihsan Yakubu, among the 54 beneficiaries. Speaking at the ceremony, she expressed confidence that women can excel in aviation.

“Aviation is not reserved for men. If you want to be a pilot as a lady, make up your mind and pursue it. No one can stop you,” she said.

Her remarks drew applause from parents and guests who described her story as a symbol of resilience and hope.

It was a moment of mixed emotions as parents accompanied their children to the airport. While many admitted they would miss their children, they described the opportunity as life-changing.

One parent said the programme could transform not only individual families but the future of Borno State.

Several parents commended the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, for investing in the future of indigent youths across the state.

According to them, the merit-based and grassroots selection process ensured that children without political connections were given equal opportunity.

They stressed that true governance goes beyond economic policies and must focus on people-driven initiatives that empower the younger generation. Many described education as the most effective long-term response to insurgency and poverty.

Speaking at the event, founding Chancellor of IBUAM, Isaac Balami, described the occasion as historic.

“Today is a historic day for us as we receive the first 54 pilots and aircraft engineers sponsored by the Borno State Government. This is the first batch of students admitted into our specialised programme,” he said.

He explained that the students will study aerospace engineering, mechatronics engineering, systems engineering, electrical/electronics engineering and software engineering, alongside intensive pilot training and management courses.

Balami disclosed that after four years of preparation, the university secured special approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to operate a unique training model integrating academic learning with hands-on industrial experience.

“This is the first time you will find a university where students combine classroom learning with about 1,000 hours of practical training annually inside a functional aircraft hangar. We are raising innovators and creators, not graduates who simply circulate CVs,” he stated.

He added that the programme is designed to compress over two decades of aviation industry experience into a structured five-year curriculum.

Addressing concerns about the university’s location, Balami said insecurity prevented the institution from being sited in Borno.

“If there was full security, this university would have been in Borno State. We pray that peace will return fully, and when it does, we hope to establish a satellite campus there,” he said.

He described Lagos as the aviation hub of West and Central Africa, noting that the city currently provides the right ecosystem for aviation training and industrial collaboration.

Balami also highlighted Africa’s growing manpower deficit in aviation, projecting that the continent will require about 29,000 pilots and 31,000 aircraft engineers within the next decade.

“No single African country can close this gap alone. That is why we are positioning Nigeria as a training hub,” he said, adding that the tuition package covers accommodation, feeding, insurance, aircraft type rating and pilot training costs.

The Executive Secretary of the Borno State Scholarship Board, Bala Isa, said the sponsorship forms part of the state government’s broader recovery strategy following years of disruption caused by insurgency.

“Borno State suffered serious setbacks in education due to prolonged school closures. This initiative is part of efforts to restore the glory of education and give our citizens hope,” he said.

According to Isa, the state has also sponsored students to study medicine, nursing and engineering in countries including China, Egypt and India.

He explained that the inclusion of aeronautical engineering and pilot training followed requests from parents seeking specialised opportunities for their children.

Architect and licensed pilot, Abayomi Omotosho Ikuru, described the initiative as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s aviation future.

“This is a very good development. It is a major boost to human capital development in the aviation sector,” he said.

For many in attendance, the event was more than a resumption ceremony. It symbolised hope, resilience and a renewed commitment to rebuilding Borno through education and opportunity.

Skin Bleaching Epidemic

In response to growing public health concerns about skin bleaching, the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists (NAD) has launched a nationwide campaign to promote self-acceptance and safe skin practices. The campaign, themed “EmbraceYourSkin”, aims to educate Nigerians on the dangers of skin bleaching and encourage individuals to embrace their natural skin tones. With skin bleaching prevalence in Nigeria ranging between 40 per cent and 84 per cent, according to the WHO Afro Region and iAHO 2023 data, the Association is sounding the alarm and calling on all Nigerians to join the movement towards a healthier future. Writes MARY NNAH

In a bold move to combat a growing public health crisis, the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists (NAD) has launched a nationwide campaign to tackle the scourge of skin bleaching in Nigeria. The campaign, themed “EmbraceYourSkin,”   aims to educate Nigerians about the dangers of skin bleaching and to promote self-acceptance and pride in natural skin tones.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nigeria has been labeled “the world capital of skin bleaching” with a staggering 40-84 per cent prevalence rate. The practice has been linked to severe health complications, including skin cancers, organ damage, and even death.

The campaign is a call to action for all Nigerians to join forces to combat this epidemic and promote a culture of self-acceptance and self-love. With the support of key stakeholders, including Eucerin, NAFDAC, and the Federal Ministry of Health, NAD is confident that together, Nigerians can overcome this menace and reclaim their natural beauty.

The campaign, themed “EmbraceYourSkin”, was recently unveiled at a press conference held at the LUTH Dermatological Clinic, LUTH Annex, Yaba, Lagos, attended by leading journalists, dermatologists, public health experts, and key industry stakeholders.

During the briefing, the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists highlighted the growing public health crisis posed by skin bleaching, a practice that involves intentionally lightening the skin through topical products, cosmetic procedures, oral tablets, and even intravenous treatments.

The Association noted that while lighter skin is often perceived as more desirable or socially advantageous, the medical risks associated with bleaching are severe and far outweigh any perceived benefits.

President of NAD, Prof. Dasetima Altraide, emphasised that skin bleaching is not just a cosmetic issue, but a serious health risk that requires collective action.

“Skin bleaching is not just a cosmetic choice – it is a health risk with severe complications. The practice has been linked to rising incidences of skin cancers, treatment-resistant fungal infections, destruction of the skin, allergies, and damage to vital organs such as the liver and kidneys. Alarmingly, even children and unborn babies are being exposed to harmful products, often before they can say no. In fact, there have been instances of pregnant mothers ingesting substances to lighten their unborn children”, he said.

According to Altraide, skin bleaching prevalence in Nigeria ranges between 40% and 84%, as per the WHO Afro Region and iAHO 2023 data. Nigeria has been labelled both “the world capital of skin bleaching” and “the skin-lightening hot house of the world,” reflecting how deeply rooted the issue has become.

Prof. Altraide reinforced the Association’s commitment to combating the crisis, saying: “Our mission is to educate, protect, and empower Nigerians to embrace their natural skin tones. Pharmacists, regulatory bodies, the media, and every Nigerian have a role to play. Together, we can dismantle the false narratives that have unfairly labelled dark skin as inferior.”

The Nigerian Association of Dermatologists expressed deep appreciation to Eucerin for supporting this nationwide advocacy effort. NAD also acknowledged the contributions of NAFDAC and the Federal Ministry of Health, praising the Ministry’s recent regulations guiding the safe use of cosmetics in Nigeria as “a timely and critical step in strengthening consumer safety nationwide.”

Underscoring the need for collective action, Prof. Altraide emphasised: “This is a clarion call for everyone to play a role in stemming this epidemic of skin bleaching that has taken centre stage in our society.”

He urged pharmacists and regulatory agencies to ensure harmful bleaching agents are not readily accessible over the counter and called on the media to amplify accurate information that reshapes the long-held false narrative that has labeled the natural dark skin as inferior.

Reiterating its message to Nigerians, NAD encouraged the public to prioritise their health and self-confidence. “To our dear fellow Nigerians, it is important to stress that skin bleaching is a harmful practice that must be avoided. Your natural skin colour is the best for you. Embrace it,” Prof. Altraide said.

What is next? The campaign will leverage public education, expert guidance, and extensive media engagement to increase awareness about the dangers of skin bleaching and promote national pride in natural skin tones.

NAD urged the public to seek qualified medical attention for skin concerns, ensure to use scientifically and clinically backed solutions, and to avoid harmful bleaching products. “Skin health matters. Skincare is a responsibility. You were born this shade, own your shade. Embrace your skin,” Prof. Altraide noted further.

UK Study Visa 2026: Nigerian Agency Flags Rising Denials for Student Applicants /2026/02/18/uk-study-visa-2026-nigerian-agency-flags-rising-denials-for-student-applicants/ /2026/02/18/uk-study-visa-2026-nigerian-agency-flags-rising-denials-for-student-applicants/#respond Tue, 17 Feb 2026 23:12:00 +0000 /?p=1176646

By Mary Nnah

Education consultancy has raised concerns over the increasing number of UK study visa refusals affecting Nigerian students, attributing the trend to weak financial documentation, poorly structured study plans, and growing scrutiny by UK immigration authorities.

According to Grewn Agency, a visa consultancy with arms in Lagos and Ibadan, many applicants underestimate the level of detail now required to convince UK visa officers of their genuine intentions.

“A large number of refusals we see are not because students are unqualified, but because their applications fail to clearly explain why they are studying the chosen course, how it fits into their career progression, and how their education will be funded,” says the Lagos Branch Head, Faith Omata.

Industry observers say UK visa officers have become increasingly cautious, especially with applications coming from high-volume countries, leading to stricter assessments of applicants’ academic background, financial history, and post-study intentions.

Omata explained that one recurring issue is the misuse or poor presentation of financial documents. Many students submit bank statements that show sudden large deposits, inconsistent income history, or funds that cannot be clearly traced to legitimate sources.

“Even when applicants technically meet the financial requirements, unclear proof-of-funds documentation often raises red flags,” she stated. “Visa officers want to see stability, consistency, and credible explanations, not just figures on paper.”

Another factor contributing to refusals, experts say, is the generic nature of many study plans and Statements of Purpose. Applications that fail to clearly link the chosen UK course to the applicant’s previous education, work experience, and long-term goals are increasingly being declined.

Education consultants also warn that reliance on informal advice and unverified online templates has worsened the situation for many first-time applicants.

“Each student’s profile is unique. Copy-and-paste applications no longer work,” Omata said. “UK visa decisions are now heavily driven by logic, clarity, and documentation integrity.”

The consultancy advised Nigerian students planning to study in the UK to seek early professional guidance, ensure their financial records are well-documented, and present a coherent academic and career narrative.

As competition for UK study visas intensifies, experts believe that thorough preparation and proper documentation will be key factors in determining approval outcomes for Nigerian applicants in 2026.

As demand grows for residential developments that combine convenience, leisure, and long-term investment value, real estate developer Minimalist & Co is positioning itself within Lagos’ evolving housing landscape with the launch of its latest project, M120 Apartments, a premium lifestyle-led residential community designed to address the realities of modern urban living.

The launch event, held in Lekki, brought together real estate investors, prospective homeowners, industry professionals, and business leaders for an on-site experience of the development. Guests were taken through guided tours of the property and its amenities, offering a firsthand look at their design philosophy and living experience behind the project.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Partner of Minimalist & Co, Mr Dolapo Adebayo, described the project as the result of a deliberate response to how people live in the city.

“M120 was conceived to solve a clear problem we see in Lagos today. People spend too much time commuting just to access basic lifestyle needs. We wanted to create a development where living, working, unwinding, and staying active could happen in one place.

This launch represents the outcome of years of focused planning and execution. Quality was our highest priority throughout the development process, and we did not compromise on it at any stage. Looking ahead, our focus remains on delivering lifestyle-driven developments that hold value over time and set a new standard for residential living,” he said.

M120 Apartments is a multi-level residential development offering 2-bedroom apartments, 3-bedroom apartments, and 4-bedroom Penthouse units. The project was designed to support modern urban living by integrating everyday conveniences and lifestyle amenities within the estate.

The development features what the company describes as Lekki’s first padel court within a residential estate, alongside a swimming pool for adults and children, a fully equipped gym, landscaped green areas, a children’s playground, a cafe designed for remote work and an on-site supermarket.
The event was hosted by Comedian and Media Personality Bovi, who highlighted the project’s investment performance, noting that the development had recorded over 200% appreciation since inception. He also remarked on the growing demand for residential properties that blend lifestyle, convenience and long-term value for both homeowners and investors.

With construction fully completed and units now available, M120 Apartments is open to homeowners and investors seeking a residential option in Lekki Phase 1 that prioritises design, functionality, and communal living.

ARM Launches ₦200 Billion Private Debt Fund to Bridge SME Financing Gap, Expand Institutional Credit in Nigeria /2026/01/22/arm-launches-%e2%82%a6200-billion-private-debt-fund-to-bridge-sme-financing-gap-expand-institutional-credit-in-nigeria/ /2026/01/22/arm-launches-%e2%82%a6200-billion-private-debt-fund-to-bridge-sme-financing-gap-expand-institutional-credit-in-nigeria/#respond Wed, 21 Jan 2026 23:58:00 +0000 /?p=1167958

ARM Investment Managers, a leading African alternative investment manager, has announced the launch of Series I of the ARM Private Debt Fund, a ₦200 billion private credit programme designed to provide structured, long-term financing to scalable small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) while delivering stable, risk-adjusted returns to institutional and qualified investors.

The Fund is structured as a closed-ended private credit vehicle and will deploy capital primarily through senior secured term loans, revolving credit facilities, and selective subordinated debt to high-quality SMEs across key sectors of the Nigerian and Sub-Saharan African economy. Series I of the programme is targeting an initial raise of ₦25 billion, with a broader ₦200 billion shelf program registered under applicable regulatory frameworks.

The launch comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s economy, as SMEs, despite accounting for nearly half of GDP and over 80% of employment, continue to face significant challenges accessing long-term, non-bank financing.

Regulatory constraints, elevated interest rates, and balance-sheet limitations have reduced the capacity of traditional banks to meet the growing credit needs of this segment, creating a structural financing gap that private credit is well positioned to address.

“Private credit plays a vital role in modern financial systems by providing disciplined, patient capital to businesses that drive real economic activity,” said Deji Opeola, CEO of the ARM Private Debt Fund. “This Fund has been deliberately structured to combine strong governance, rigorous credit underwriting, and active portfolio management. Our objective is to protect investor capital while supporting the growth of viable SMEs that create jobs, deepen local value chains, and contribute meaningfully to economic development.”

The ARM Private Debt Fund is targeted at qualified institutional investors, development finance institutions, family offices, and high-net-worth investors seeking exposure to private credit as a portfolio diversifier.

The Fund aims to deliver returns of approximately 300bps above the prevailing yield on the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) 10-year bond, subject to market conditions. Some of the key features of the Fund include a strong bias toward senior secured lending, with a minimum of 80% of the portfolio invested in asset-backed, covenant-protected facilities.

It also has conservative leverage, strict obligor and sector concentration limits, and active monitoring, with independent governance structures, including an Investment Committee and Advisory Board. The Fund optimises its portfolio diversification across sectors and geographies, with a long-term investment horizon aligned with SME growth cycles.
Investors interested in participating in the Fund are encouraged to contact Onyinyechi.Iwuoha@arm-altfunds.com for further information on subscription terms and eligibility requirements.

In addition to investor participation, ARM is also inviting eligible SMEs and mid-sized businesses seeking structured growth capital to apply for financing under the Fund. The Fund will focus on businesses with proven operating track records and stable or growing cash flows, minimum profitability thresholds of N500m, strong governance and management structures, and clear use-of-funds for working capital expansion, asset acquisition, or growth initiatives.

Priority sectors include manufacturing, trade and distribution, agribusiness value chains (excluding primary agriculture), services, logistics, and technology-enabled businesses, among others. Eligible SMEs seeking financing are encouraged to submit expressions of interest to Onyinyechi.Iwuoha@arm-altfunds.com.

The ARM Private Debt Fund builds on ARM’s broader alternative investment platform, which includes infrastructure, real estate, trade finance, and sector-focused funds. The Fund is domiciled in Mauritius and structured as a multi-currency vehicle, enabling deployment of both naira and hard-currency capital across Sub-Saharan Africa over time. By combining global private credit best practices with deep local market expertise, ARM aims to contribute to the development of a more resilient and diversified credit ecosystem, one that supports enterprise growth while maintaining financial discipline.

“This Fund is not a one-off product,” Opeola added. “It is the foundation of a long-term private credit platform that we believe will play an important role in financing Africa’s next phase of growth.”

ARM Investment Managers is a leading African investment management firm with over three decades of experience across traditional and alternative asset classes. ARM manages funds for retail and institutional investors and is focused on delivering sustainable, long-term value through disciplined investment strategies and strong governance.

As the clock strikes the dawn of a new year, the President of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), QS Dr. Aminu Muhammed Bashir, FNIQS, has issued a passionate call to action to stakeholders in the built environment sector.

In his New Year address, Dr. Bashir emphasised the critical role that Quantity Surveyors play in ensuring that projects are delivered with value for money, transparency, and accountability.

“Every school, road, hospital, home, and industrial facility benefits when cost is managed with integrity and expertise”, Bashir declared, highlighting the importance of effective cost management in the nation’s development projects.
He saluted the resilience, professionalism, and dedication of Quantity Surveyors, who remain critical to the success of projects across housing, infrastructure, energy, transportation, and industry.

The NIQS President outlined his leadership priorities for the 2025-2027 period, which include advocacy, capacity development, innovation, and collaboration. He pledged to strengthen the Institute’s engagement with government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), regulators, and corporate organizations to ensure that cost management expertise is fully integrated into public and private sector decision-making.

“We are investing in sector-specific training, equipping our members with advanced competencies in areas such as infrastructure, oil and gas, marine works, building services, sustainability, and digital cost management — ensuring that Nigerian Quantity Surveyors remain globally competitive and future-ready,” Dr. Bashir revealed. This, he said, would enable the Institute’s members to deliver projects that meet international standards and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

Bashir also emphasised the importance of digitalization, improved governance, and strategic investments in revitalizing the Institute’s institutional systems. He highlighted the NIQS Cost Data Bank initiative, which aims to support better planning, budgeting, and delivery of capital projects across the country. This initiative, he said, would provide a valuable resource for stakeholders in the built environment sector, enabling them to make informed decisions and deliver projects efficiently.

The NIQS President extended an invitation to government agencies, corporate organizations, and development partners to partner with NIQS in shaping policies, delivering projects, training talent, and building systems that promote transparency, accountability, and value for money. “Effective cost management is not an optional extra — it is a strategic necessity,” Dr. Bashir emphasized, adding that the Institute remains committed to professional excellence, ethical practice, inter-generational knowledge transfer, and national service.

Bashir expressed his gratitude to the Institute’s sponsors and collaborators, acknowledging their support in strengthening not just an institution, but an entire professional ecosystem that contributes directly to economic stability, investor confidence, and national development.

As the nation embarks on a new year, Bashir wishes Nigerians a prosperous, fulfilling, and impactful year, praying that it will be a year of sound decisions, responsible investments, and sustainable growth. “Together, through collaboration and shared purpose, we can deliver projects that truly serve society,” he said, concluding his address.

“God bless you. God bless the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors. And God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he concluded, expressing his optimism for a brighter future for the nation’s-built environment sector.

LEAP Africa, Partners Empower Over 300 Public School Students in Lagos with Solar-Powered Digital Learning /2025/12/24/leap-africa-partners-empower-over-300-public-school-students-in-lagos-with-solar-powered-digital-learning/ /2025/12/24/leap-africa-partners-empower-over-300-public-school-students-in-lagos-with-solar-powered-digital-learning/#respond Tue, 23 Dec 2025 23:23:00 +0000 /?p=1160188

Access to digital learning took a major leap forward in Lagos as two public schools transitioned into technology-enabled learning environments with the commissioning of fully equipped, solar-powered Digital Libraries, unlocking reliable, sustainable access to digital education for over 300 students.

In a significant step towards bridging the digital divide and strengthening foundational education, LEAP Africa, in partnership with Dow Chemical and TEM Nigeria, has empowered hundreds of public school students with two fully equipped solar-powered Digital Libraries. This handover took place in both Onike Girls High School, Yaba and Hope Nursery and Primary School, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The initiative is designed to provide over 300 children annually with access to digital learning tools, enhance lesson delivery through interactive educational content, and improve academic performance and digital literacy. Beyond the classroom, the programme is designed to ignite early interest in STEM and innovation, while positioning the beneficiary schools as practical models for community-driven digital transformation.

The donated digital libraries comprise child-friendly tablets with pre-installed curriculum-aligned e-learning content, secure internet access, and appropriate furniture and learning setups. To ensure uninterrupted learning, the project also includes solar-powered solutions to generate electricity for the libraries and their devices.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Executive Director of LEAP Africa emphasised the importance of equitable access to quality education in preparing young learners for a technology-driven future. “This digital library represents more than devices and internet access; it is an investment in the potential of young minds. Through partnerships like this with Dow Chemical, we can create sustainable learning environments that empower children and educators alike,” said Kehinde Ayeni, the Executive Director of LEAP Africa.

Dow Chemical reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive development and education as a catalyst for long-term community transformation. “At Dow, we believe that access to education and digital skills is critical to building resilient communities. This project reflects our commitment to creating shared value and supporting initiatives that prepare the next generation for the future,” Adebisi Adeoti, Managing Director of West Africa and Africa Head of Sustainability and Strategy at Dow Chemical, noted.

In a statement by the Vice Principal of Onike Girls High School, Mrs F.O Alabi said, “A big thank you to LEAP Africa, Dow and TEM Nigeria. We assure you that we will use this library in the way it’s meant to be used. We will maintain it as it should be. Thank you for trusting us.”

With the deployment of the digital libraries, teachers at Onike Girls High School and Hope Nursery and Primary School will be better equipped to deliver engaging, interactive lessons, while students gain exposure to digital tools, STEM learning, and global knowledge resources from an early age. The initiative is designed to expand access to quality digital learning tools for over 300 underserved children, foster early digital literacy, and unlock new learning opportunities through technology.

The project underscores the power of cross-sector collaboration in addressing educational gaps and advancing sustainable development outcomes across communities. LEAP Africa intends to scale this model to more public schools across Lagos and is seeking partnerships with organisations committed to digital inclusion and foundational education.

Toxic Masculinity Takes Toll on Nigerian Men /2025/12/19/toxic-masculinity-takes-toll-on-nigerian-men/ /2025/12/19/toxic-masculinity-takes-toll-on-nigerian-men/#respond Thu, 18 Dec 2025 23:21:00 +0000 /?p=1158142

Mary Nnah

The traditional notions of masculinity that have long been ingrained in Nigerian society are taking a devastating toll on men’s mental health. The pressure to conform to societal expectations of what it means to be a man is proving to be a recipe for disaster, with rising rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide among men.

According to Sola Oyebade, aka Mr. Mahogany, a renowned expert on men’s issues and convener of the Triple Conference held in Lagos recently, “Men are expected to be strong, to pay all the bills, and to be tough all the time.” But life is not like that anymore. The economy is struggling, women are becoming more independent, and men are feeling the weight of expectations.

The recent Triple G (Groom, Grow, & Grind) Conference in Lagos shone a spotlight on the crisis facing modern men. The event brought together industry experts and men from all walks of life to share their knowledge and experiences.

“Men are suffering in silence, and it’s affecting their relationships and their productivity,” Mr. Mahogany said. “We need to create a safe space for men to talk about their struggles and to seek help when they need it.”

The conference highlighted the importance of redefining what it means to be a man and encouraging men to be vulnerable and open up. It’s time to break down the barriers of toxic masculinity and build a community that supports and uplifts each other.

The statistics are alarming, but there’s hope. By acknowledging the problem and working together, we can create a brighter future for Nigerian men. It’s time to redefine masculinity and prioritize men’s mental health.

According to Mr. Mahogany, the status quo is no longer acceptable. Men are crying out for help, and it’s time we listened. The Triple G Conference is just the beginning. We need to continue the conversation and take action to support men’s mental health.

As Mr. Mahogany said, “We need to redefine what it means to be a man and encourage men to be vulnerable and open up.” It’s time to take the first step towards a healthier, happier future for Nigerian men.
