Director General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria(SON), Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke

has reiterated his commitment to continue to protect and the growth of local manufacturing companies in the country in the bid to enhancing the industrialisation of the nation.

Such development,Okeke said, would also reduce the production of sub standards products and thereby accelerating the economic growth of the country.

Speaking  in Ilorin, Kwara state capitalwhile declaring open a one-day Stakeholders Forum for  Manufacturers, MSMEs, Importers and Exporters, Okeke said the protection of local manufacturing companies remains a main agenda of the present administration in its tasks  to discourage importation of goods and services.

The theme of the workshop is Standard- “The Pillar for Innovation, Safety  and Sustainable Development.”

Represented by the SON Director, Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Talatu Ethan, he said: “One of the cornerstones of this administration’s industrial policy is the “Nigeria First Policy. This is not just a directive from above, it is a challenge to every Nigerian to look inward, support homegrown solutions, and raise the quality of local production. For this vision to be meaningful, we must anchor it on credible quality infrastructure.

“At SON, we are responding by scaling up our certification, training, and monitoring systems to give Nigerian-made products the credibility they deserveLet me make this clear promoting the Nigeria First Policy is not about excluding others: it is about preparing ourselves. It is about positioning Nigerian entrepreneurs, artisans, and manufacturers to compete favourably not just within our borders, but across West Attica and beyond Standards are how we translate patriotic intention into economic success.”

He added, “Today’s workshop is a platform for knowledge sharing, yes, but more than that it is a space for reorientation. We must move from seeing standards as regulatory burdens to understanding them as business enablers. Compliance with standards is not a favour to SON, it is an investment in your own credibility. competitiveness, and long-term relevance.”

Okeke said stakeholders were invited  to reflect on how innovation can thrive in an environment of order and predictability.

Also speaking at the event, the Regional Director, North Central,  SON,  Dr. Marline Wasiri stressed the need for the stakeholders to continue to ensure the production of quality of their products.

This, she said, would go a long way of giving them integrity and also allowing their products to compete with other products in the international markets.

She  said: “As the Regional Director for the North Central of SON, I want to  emphasise that  our mandate is not just to regulate but also  to support, guide and empower businesses particularly our small and medium-scale enterprises and local manufacturers to grow, compete and thrive both locally and internationally.”

The affected companies are, Harmony Transport Services, Harmony Insurance Brokers, and Harmony Investment and Property Development Company.

Consequently, the council has returned the close-up  public properties to  the Ministry of Finance Incorporated for better management and reduced liabilities.

The state executive council  meeting was  presided over by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The statement said that, “the  council received briefings from Commissioner for Finance Dr. Hauwa Nuru on the status of the companies and the best way to stop their continuous losses, in spite of several bailouts and loans that did not yield anything in the public interest

“Following their numerous financial crises, liabilities, and non-profitability since 2012, Kwara State Executive Council on Tuesday resolved to revert all public properties in Harmony Holdings and its wobbling subsidiaries back to the Ministry of Finance Incorporated for better management and reduced liabilities”.

The Commissioner recalled that huge public funds had been sunk into Harmony Holdings and its subsidiaries like Harmony Transport Services, Harmony Insurance Brokers, and Harmony Investment and Property Development Company, among others, with no penny as returns on investment to the state since 2012.

The Kwara State Government yesterday hinted that arrangement has been finalised to secure over $85.4m grant from the World Bank to bring more dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of the rural populace in the state.

The state commissioner for Finance, Dr. Awwal Nuru dropped the hint in Ilorin during the first quarter 2025 inter ministerial press briefing organised by the State Ministry of Communications.

She said: “Though, the World Bank has yet to release the funds to the state government but the state government has met the needed conditions to obtain the grant from the World Bank”.

She explained that, “The granting of the grant to the state was based on the performances of the state on the N- Cares intervention projects in the state”.

She pointed out that, “the government has committed a lot of money as counterpart fund to the N-Cares, a World Bank intervention projects and this has assisted the World Bank to compensate the state government for the grant”.

Nuru opined that by the time the money is released to the government, it will have direct impact on the socio-economic development of the people, especially those residing at the rural areas of the state.

“Like I said the fund is yet to be released to Kwara State Government but the World Bank has finalised plans to grant the government a sum of $84.5m.

“Kwara is not the only state that would benefit from the grant. All the states that performed in the World Bank N-Cares intervention projects would also benefit from the grant.

“It is not a secret affair. It is on the World bank website for the beneficiary states in Nigeria. This support is based on the performance index of Kwara state on the N-Cares projects and other states in the country”, Duru noted.

Nuru also said that, the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the state has increased from N21billion to N25billion during the first quarter of the year.

She said the state government is committed to transparency in the governance and would not indulge on any expenses that would not pass through due process in the state.

Duru also said the government has paid all the dues meant for pensioners after they have completed all the necessary guidelines needed to get their pensions in the state.

She also used the event to laud local government councils in the state for embarking on meaningful projects capable of enhancing the socio-economic development of the rural populace in the state.

The Kwara State Government and Islamic Development Bank, IsDB, Saudi Arabia have embarked on partnership on livestock production and rural development transformation project worth $57.2 million.

Already, five local government councils in the state; Ifelodun, Kaiama, Baruten, Asa, and Moro would benefit from the project.

The state coordinator of the Special Agro Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ), Dr. Busari Isiaka, disclosed this to newsmen in Ilorin during a chat.

He said the partnership would also assist the SAPZ to establish a robust infrastructure for investors and local farmers in beef and milk processing.

Isiaka who emphasized the significance of the project noted it is the first time a sitting governor is serving as the chairman of a steering committee for such an undertaking.

“For you to understand the importance of this project, it is a five-year initiative with joint funding from the state government and IsDB.

“Other states of the federation receive their support from the African Development Bank. Kwara is pioneering this collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank”, he said.

He also said that Kwara State’s early commitment to the project was evident in its swift payment of counterpart funds, making it the first state to fulfill its financial obligations, adding that the prompt action had allowed the state to progress significantly.

“The initiative is primarily focused on improving agricultural infrastructure, particularly in the livestock sector. With a core objective of enhancing livelihoods of rural communities.

“The SAPZ project will give special attention to youth and women while promoting food and nutritional security. It is designed to provide sustainable solutions for livestock farmers by ensuring they have access to modern processing facilities”, he stated

Isiaka who said the project is being implemented in five local government areas: Ifelodun, Kaiama, Baruten, Asa, and Moro, added it will feature Agricultural Transformation Centres, “where local farmers can process raw materials such as milk before they are transported to an agro-industrial hub in Malete, Moro local government area, for further processing into dairy products like yogurt and cheese.

“The beef value chain will also be integrated into the project, with necessary facilities to support meat processing.

“To ensure a smooth execution, we conducted extensive environmental assessments and community consultations. We have profiled over 5,000 beneficiaries, ensuring that the infrastructure we are providing meets their needs, including access to potable water”, he said.

He said the project, currently in its design phase, is expected to transition into full infrastructure development later this year.

“By God’s grace, this year we will commence the construction of these facilities. The design phase will be completed in three months, after which contractors will take over”, he said.

The SAPZ state coordinator said that the state government has also engaged consultants to attract both local and international investors to the project.

“The goal of the Special Agro-Processing Zone (SAPZ) is to reduce agricultural wastage and enhance value addition. Kwara is positioning itself as a leader in livestock processing, and this initiative will ensure that our farmers benefit immensely”, he said.

Worried by the economic hardship in the country, a foundation based in Ilorin, Oluwafemi Oparinde Foundation has empowered over 1,000 pensioners with financial support and health care outreach in the state.

Speaking at the event in Ilorin on Tuesday, the founder of the Foundation, Mr. Oluwafemi Adesola Oparinde, said the foundation that started since 2020 in the state was aimed to uplift the people and boost the socio-economic growth of the less privileged people in the society.

According to him, “Retirement is not the end of a journey; rather, it is a stage of life that deserves dignity, respect and support”.

He said: “Our retirees have spent decades in service – shaping our communities, building our institutions, and laying the foundation for the progress we enjoy today.

“They (retirees) have given their time, energy, and wisdom to this nation, and now it is our turn to give back.

“Through the Oluwafemi Oparinde Foundation, our mission has always been to empower communities and uplift lives”.

Oparinde added, “When we started this journey in 2020, our goal was to cushion the harsh effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly here in Ilorin.

“Over the years, we have expanded our reach – supporting education, empowering entrepreneurs, and assisting the less privileged.

“Today’s event is a continuation of that vision: to ensure that our senior citizens are not forgotten but cherished, celebrated, and supported.

“This programme is a testament to the power of collective responsibility. We are here to provide financial assistance to 1,000 retirees, offer free medical outreach, and create an atmosphere of joy and appreciation.

“This is not just charity; it is a moral obligation—a duty to those who have paved the way for us.

“To our senior citizens present today, I say this: You are valued, you are appreciated, and your contributions will never be forgotten.

“May this event serve as a reminder that you are an integral part of our society, and as long as we stand, we will continue to support you.

Earlier, the guest speaker of the event, Chief Iyiola Oyedepo, urged the government to disengage pensioners a year to the end of retirement and train them in what they’ll do after retirement.

Oyedepo who said the intending retiree should be paid the one-year salary stated the state government should ensure that retirees are paid their gratuity at most three months after retirement.

He said its high time government stop making life miserable for retirees after service to their fatherland, stressing that the proposal would make retirees contribute to the economic development of the state.

No fewer than 5,000 residents of Ogele Community in Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State have been rendered homeless due to a rainstorm that ravaged the community.

Already about 50 houses have been affected by the rainstorm as many residents have been sleeping in mosques, churches and other uncompleted buildings in the community.

The incident, according to Ƶ checks, happened last Sunday, around 8:00 pm and also wreaked havoc on public places like schools and individual houses.

A visit by our correspondent to the town on Tuesday showed the people of the town are still counting the effects of the rainstorm.

Among the places visited by our correspondent includes, Ansarul Islam Primary School, Community Secondary School, Health Center, Mosques, and Quranic schools as the rainstorm damaged the affected property.

One of the residents of the town, Mr. Nurudeen Fehintola, said the house of the 139-year-old Mufti of Ogele and its environs were affected by the storm, including Alhaji Abdulsalam Ibrahim’s house.

“As Muslims celebrate Eid-l-fitr after the completion of the Ramadan fast, our community was thrown into a solemn mood by the rainstorm disaster,” he lamented.

The rainstorm that greeted the community on Sunday evening left many residents homeless, helpless and devastated owing to the destruction of public infrastructures and properties owned by residents and the indigenes.

Other facilities destroyed include concrete poles and high-tension electric wire linking Ogele, Afon and adjoining communities.

Other victims of the rainstorm who appeared sad and devastated said they were still counting their losses.

They appealed to the government at all levels and public-spirited individuals and organisations for help.

The Community leader, Aare Ogele, Ishola Abubakar Akanbi, whose residence was also affected, reinforced the call of the victims who he said are being ripped off of their belongings and sources of livelihood.

The Chairman of Ogele Descendants Progressive Union (ODPU), Issa Akanbi-Oniyo, and others corroborated the view of the community leader, saying the incident left many residents retarded and homeless.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State yesterday said that, the student loan policy of the federal government will boost the hope of children of low-income earners to access quality higher education in the country.

AbdulRazaq stated this in Ilorin on Wednesday during a sensitization programme for students of tertiary institutions in the state.

The programme was organized by the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) in partnership with the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Policy Formulation & Human Capital Development, Dr Adetola Ariyike Salau.

It was themed ‘Empowering Students through Financial Inclusion and Entrepreneurship’.

AbdulRazaq commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the initiative adding it will address the major challenge of youth acquiring tertiary education.

The governor said his administration is partnering NELFUND on the sensitization to ensure that students across the educational institutions in the state benefit from the scheme.

“There is a lot to be grateful to the federal government for creating an avenue like this. Like I said earlier, the major challenge facing the youth to gain access to quality education is lack of funding.

“So, providing this kind of opportunity is huge, and this is not just about money but empowerment,” the Governor said through Dr. Salau who represented him.

He added: “We are going to be rolling out more programmes, talking about how we are going to mentor and give them skills at different centers across the state.

“This is important because after finishing the school, what next? Do they have the right skills so that they can be employable? So, we are going to partner with NELFUND to carry out this programme. That is very key because they all need to be carried along.”

Managing Director NELFUND, Akintunde Sanya, who spoke through Executive Director Operations, Mustapha lyal, said they had so far received over 400,000 applications across Nigerian institutions since the launch of their operation, out of which 70% had been cleared.

He said that thousands of students from Kwara State have benefited from the loan scheme with about N900m disbursed to the combined public institutions in the state.

NELFUND boss explained that after successful application, the agency pays the school fees of the beneficiaries into their institutions’ accounts, while their annual upkeep of N240,000 is paid into their individual accounts.

Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, in his remarks, said the initiative is bringing relief to parents who have the responsibility to pay their students’ school fees, and urged students to enroll en masse and take advantage of the opportunity provided.

Egbewole, who was represented by Deputy VC Management Services Prof Adegboyega Fawale, hailed the federal government for the programme.

Vice Chancellor, Muhammad Kamal-deen University, urged the federal government to find means of incorporating private institutions into NELFUND, saying their students also want to benefit as bonafide Nigerians.

Other speakers at the programme, including deans of students’ affairs of the various institutions in the state, advised the students to explore the opportunity to advance their knowledge.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State yesterday rejigged his cabinet swore-in Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe and Dr. Maryam Nnafatima Imam as new commissioners.

Olohungbebe was assigned to the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, while Nnafatima got the Social Development portfolio.

The new development has led the state governor, Alhaji AbdulRazaq to effect changes in the positions of some members of the State Executive Council (SEC).

The former commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo- Kawu, was moved to the Ministry of Tertiary Education, while Dr. Mary Arinde, formerly with the Ministry of the Tertiary Education is now moved to the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development.

The governor named Aliyu Kora Sabi as the Commissioner for the newly created Transportation Ministry, and moved Mrs. Olohuntoyosi Thomas Adebayo from the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry to the new Ministry of Livestock Development.

The former Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Afeez Abolore, was redeployed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development while Abosede Olaitan Buraimoh is now in charge of the Ministry of Social Development.

AbdulRazaq charged the new commissioners to be team players and to key into the administration’s efforts to build on its achievements across sectors.

AbdulRazaq said the new commissioners got a “deserving elevation” from their previous roles as Senior Special Assistants.

He said: “Today marks not just the beginning of a new chapter for the commissioners-designate but, expectedly, a renewed commitment to serving the people of Kwara State with dedication, integrity, and vision.

“In leadership, and especially in public service, the strength of any administration lies in the power of teamwork.

“Be mindful that our mission is to collaborate, combining our strengths and ideas to leave Kwara far better than we met it.

“As it’s clear to everyone, our government has delivered very substantial, measurable progress in different sectors.

“We have set new standards in public education, primary healthcare, rural and urban development, infrastructure upgrade, social inclusion, structured social protection, and wealth redistribution initiatives.

“As you both step into your new roles, I urge you to embrace creativity, to always touch base with the people, to think outside the box, and to apply prudence in every decision made.

Traditional rulers, security agencies, religious leaders, heads of institutions, civil society organisations and youth development associations yesterday converged in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, to deliberate on how to stop further Gender Based Violence (GBV) across the 16 local government councils of Kwara State in order to have a peaceful atmosphere for all.

The development, according to Ƶ checks, might not be unconnected with the recent murder of a final year student of Kwara State College of Education, late Yetunde Hafsoh Lawal, by one acclaimed Islamic cleric, Mallam AbdulRahman Mohammed Bello, for ritual purposes in Ilorin.

The event was organised by a non-governmental organisation, Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI), in partnership with the Ford Foundation, so as to educate and enlighten the affected stakeholders on the need to rise against such act in their various communities in the state.

The theme of the event is tagged “Mobilizing Stakeholders for Action Against Gender-Based Violence in Kwara State”.

Speaking at the event, the Executive director of BBYDI, Mrs. Nurah Sanni- Jimoh, said: “Today is more than just another gathering; it is a bold step in our collective fight against one of the most pressing human rights violations of our time”.

She said: “Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains a deep-rooted societal challenge that threatens the dignity, safety, and well-being of individuals, especially women and girls.

“For too long, gender-based violence has persisted under different guises, like domestic abuse, sexual violence, harmful traditional practices, and even structural discrimination.

“Yet, let it be known that no society can truly prosper while half of its population lives in fear, and suffers in silence”.

She said: “Our resolve today is further strengthened by the fact that both the law and religion stand firmly against gender-based violence.

“Our faiths, be it Islam, Christianity or traditional practices, uphold the sanctity of human dignity, condemn oppression and injustice.

“There is no justification, culturally, religiously, or otherwise, for any act that diminishes the worth of another human being. Similarly, laws like the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act criminalize various forms of GBV.

The executive director added: “Over the years, we at Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI) have remained resolute in our commitment to combating GBV, ensuring that no survivor suffers in silence, and that communities take a stand against all forms of violence.

“Our efforts, particularly in Kwara State, have focused on advocacy, prevention, and strategic engagement with key stakeholders, many of whom are present in this hall today.

“As part of our commitment to protecting the rights of women and girls, we have actively advocated for the domestication of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act in Kwara, Osun, and Niger States.

“To support this advocacy, we developed a compendium of Discriminatory laws and practices Against Women in Nigeria which provides information on the gaps in the existing laws regarding the rights of women”.

“We also produced a fact-sheet on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, and a policy brief highlighting the gaps and the way forward in the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, 2015.

“Additionally, we trained 25 #SaferNet Ambassadors on online safety, these ambassadors were subsequently deployed to secondary schools across Kwara State to educate students and teachers on digital rights and internet safety”.

In her remarks, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Afolashade Opeyemi urged encouragement for womenfolk and general condemnation of the violators of women’s rights.

She however said: “Traditional rulers, religious leaders, law enforcement agencies, civil society organizations, and every citizen must be part of the solution.

“Your influence and voices are powerful tools in changing harmful norms and fostering an environment of respect and equality”.

On their part, Olomu of Omuaran, Oba AbdulRaheem Oladele Adeoti and Emir of Ilesha Baruba, Prof. Alidu Abubakar, lauded the BBYDI for taking bold step on the need to stop further Gender Based Violence in the state.

They however said that, the royal fathers in the state will not relent towards educating the people of the communities so as to nip the act in the bud.

•Lower food prices ahead of Ramadan, monarch appeals to traders

Hammed Shittu in Ilorin and Wole Ayodele in Jalingo

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State yesterday said his administration would leave no stone unturned towards providing food security for the people of the state.

AbdulRazaq stated this in Ilorin during the launch of the State Agro Inputs Fair for the year 2025.

The Fair, organised by the Kwara Agricultural Development Project (KWADP), an agency under the State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, will last for five days.

In another development, the District Head of Jalingo and Galadima of Muri Emirate, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Lamido Abba Tukur has appealed to farmers and traders in Taraba State to lower the cost of food items in the spirit of Ramadan.

Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his coronation held on Sunday in Jalingo, Alhaji Abba Tukur, urged the traders to consider the plight of the poor masses and bring down the prices of food items especially that Ramadan is just few days away.

Meanwhile, in achieving food security, AbdulRazaq said the launch of the agro inputs fair is to provide farmers early access to high-quality inputs at affordable prices, training, mechanisation support, climate advisory, and market linkages

AbdulRazaq, represented at the event by his deputy, Mr. Kayode Alabi stated: “This fair is not just about agro inputs. It is about innovation, knowledge sharing, and creating solutions that will drive agricultural productivity.

“It is a platform where farmers, researchers, and industry leaders connect, exchange ideas, and access cutting-edge solutions that will define the future of farming in Kwara.

“Kwara is not just participating in Nigeria’s agricultural transformation; it is leading the charge. The bar has been set, and there is no going back.

“The goal is clear: greater yields, lower food prices, and a thriving, self-sufficient agricultural economy.”

Recalling how Kwara recorded the lowest food inflation rate for three consecutive months last year in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the Governor called the ranking a testament to his administration’s efforts, smart policies, and strategic investments.

He lauded the local farmers for their relentless hard work and said they have been complementing the government to achieve food sufficiency in the state.

Also speaking at the event, the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, said the fair sought to equip the farmers with the tools, knowledge, and support needed to maximize productivity and profitability this season.

She said: “The government is committed to strengthening agriculture through mechanization, provision of extension services for farmers, distribution of inputs, provision of tractors to local governments, and support for dry-season farming.

“Beyond discounted fertilizers, seeds, and agrochemicals, this fair provides practical workshops on modern farming techniques, pest control, and post-harvest management.

“Farmers will also benefit from NiMET’s climate advisory for informed decision-making, security insights to protect their investments, and opportunities like the outgrowers scheme for expanded market access. I urge all participants to take full advantage of this opportunity.”

Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Umar Mahmud Aboki, also hailed the governor for the initiative, saying the programme attests to the commitment of his administration to supporting farmers and advancing the agricultural sector in the state.

Elerin of Adanla, Oba Dr David Oyerinola Adedunmoye, who spoke on behalf of other traditional rulers in attendance, described the fair as unique and timely.

On his part, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Lamido Abba Tukur lamented that the daily increment in the prices of food has become worrisome and has further worsened the economic challenges of indigent persons which may hinder their ability to diligently observe the Ramadan fasting period.

According to the traditional ruler, “I wish to appeal to both farmers and traders to consider the plight of the poor people and reduce the prices of food items. The daily increase in the prices of food items is worsening the economic challenges of the indigent persons.

“I want people in control of this aspect to consider the situation of poor people. The devaluation of the Naira in exchange for food is a terrible signal that the state of the indigent persons would worsen if not urgently addressed”

Alhaji Abba Tukur took time to commend the Taraba State governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for his unrelenting war against insecurity in the state which according to him, is unprecedented in the annals of the state’s history.

Describing the governor’s efforts in curbing insecurity as outstanding, the traditional ruler stressed the fight against banditry, kidnapping and communal clashes has engendered peace and enhanced the economic fortunes of the state.

In his words: “My decision to celebrate 40 years on the throne as Galadima today is due to Governor Kefas’ deliberate fight against insecurity in Taraba.

“The governor’s fight against banditry has brought peace, not only in Jalingo but to the entire Taraba that has facilitated people’s access to different means of daily earnings.

“As a traditional ruler, I find no joy in life when my people cannot access their farms and businesses due to insecurity. I want to sincerely commend Governor Agbu Kefas for the outstanding fight against insecurity in Taraba State which is gradually restoring life, not only to the depressed persons but to the entire citizens”

In their separate speeches on the occasion, the Lamido Bakundi, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Muhammad Gidado Misa, and the Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Kabiru Marafa, described the Galadima as a repository of knowledge whose leadership qualities is unparalleled.

They both noted that the activities and conduct of the Galadima has become a reference point among the traditional institution in the state and prayed to God to continue to grant him good health and wisdom in his service to the state in particular and the nation in general.

Petroleum Smuggling: Customs Boss Expresses Concern over Impact on Nation’s Economy /2025/02/18/petroleum-smuggling-customs-boss-expresses-concern-over-impact-on-nations-economy/ /2025/02/18/petroleum-smuggling-customs-boss-expresses-concern-over-impact-on-nations-economy/#respond Tue, 18 Feb 2025 02:22:37 +0000 /?p=1057726

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (CGC), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has expressed concern over the increasing rate of petroleum product smuggling despite the removal of oil subsidy by the federal government, describing the trend as a major threat to the nation’s economy.

The CGC boss made the remarks on Monday during an official visit to the Kwara State Customs Area Command headquarters in Ilorin.

He said: “Since the implementation of the fuel subsidy removal by the government, we have observed a very disturbing trend in sophisticated smuggling operations across our borders.

“This is despite the expectations that fuel subsidies are expected to bridge the gap.

“There are lots of disparity that we still experience when we compare the fuel prices in our neighboring countries with what we have here.

“Petroleum prices in Nigeria now are below N1,000. Despite the fact that this figure seems to be higher, it is significantly lower when compared to other prices in neighbouring countries like Benin Republic and Cameroon which goes for around N1700 and N2,000 respectively in our local currency.”

He said: “Despite our efforts to curb these activities collaboratively, the lucrative arbitrage economy has continued to incentivise more sophisticated smuggling operations in the borders.

The Comptroller General said the sophistication of smugglers demand more than conventional approach adding that the persistent challenge of petroleum smuggling continues to pose a serious challenge to our economy.

He stated that the persistent challenge of fuel smuggling remains worrisome and must be tackled decisively.

The Customs boss warned that unless authorities engage all segments of society in the fight against smuggling, the country may suffer severe economic losses.

“This menace constitutes a great danger to our economy, and we must deploy all necessary measures to curb it. The culprits will be brought to book in accordance with the law,” he said.

He however noted that significant progress has been recorded in curbing fuel smuggling through the deployment of advanced technology.

He said with about 17 land borders in the country, the fight against petroleum smuggling, among others, would require more advanced technology and the involvement of the critical stakeholders.

He therefore urged the people of the country and other security agencies to continue to support the Customs in the bid to tackle the oil smugglers in the country.

On the success so far recorded in the Kwara State Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adeniyi said, it has intercepted a total of 800 jerry cans of 25 litres of PMS including a 33,000 litres truckload worth N53 million in Kwara State.

He said the period of the seizure was from the middle of January to February 10, 2025 and complemented its ongoing crackdown on smugglers in the country.

He described the Kwara border with Benin Republic as a very strategic axis adding that “you are going to be seeing senior officers more often than before now because of the development”.

According to him, with the launch of its “Operation Whirlwind”, NCS has also achieved significant results.

These achievements, he noted, also include the “sealing of 12 retail outlets for smuggling activities, seizure of 460,000 liters of PMS destined for neighboring countries, confiscation of 23 means of conveyance and over 8,000 kegs of PMS.

He added that 7 suspects have been arrested while 3 marketers are facing ongoing prosecution for regulatory offences since the operation was started.

Speaking during the visit, the Kwara State Comptroller of Customs, Faith Ojeifo, emphasized that tackling petroleum smuggling must be a collective effort involving all security agencies and members of the public.

A former presidential candidate and businessman, Olawepo Gbenga-Hashim  has emphasised the need for the federal government to reduce dependence on oil.

Rather, he said that, the government should leverage on its vast agricultural and solid mineral resources, promoting industrialization and business environment so as to enhance the growth of the economy.

The former presidential candidate’s comment came amidst the recent  on online debate on Twitter and rekindling discussions about Nigeria’s economic future.

The former presidential candidate in the video obtained by our correspondent in Ilorin, Kwara state capital over the weekend,  outlined his ambitious economic vision for Nigeria, aiming to achieve a minimum Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $4 trillion within a decade.

He said,“The key to Nigeria’s economic transformation is integrating agriculture and mineral resources with manufacturing. We must create an industrial base that contributes at least 40% to GDP, which will in turn generate millions of well-paying jobs”.

He also highlighted the need to improve Nigeria’s business environment by removing bureaucratic bottlenecks and ensuring policies that attract foreign and domestic investments.

According to him, Nigeria’s GDP is too small for 200 million population and even if saints are ruling Nigeria, it’s still going to be a poor nation.

He proposed a $4trillion GDP in 10 years to make Nigeria a middle income country alongside Turkey, Singapore and others.

His proposals focus on reducing Nigeria’s dependence on oil, leveraging its vast agricultural and solid mineral resources, promoting industrialization, and improving the business environment.

The hashtag “Mickey Mouse Economy” is currently trending on Twitter, with many Nigerians expressing admiration for Hashim’s foresight and strategic insight.

Critics of the government are using the hashtag to highlight the disconnect between political promises and the harsh realities faced by everyday Nigerians.

However, a twitter user, Mr. Abdullahi Ado stated that, “Gbenga Hashim’s economic plan is a blueprint for Nigeria’s economic transformation. His ideas are innovative, practical, and worthy of consideration by policymakers who are seeking real solutions to our economic challenges.”

A video of former presidential candidate, Hon. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, discussing his ambitious economic plan for Nigeria in 2018 has resurfaced online.
The development has sparked widespread admiration for his deep understanding of the country’s economic challenges and his strategic vision for national growth.

In the now-trending video obtained by our correspondent in Ilorin, Kwara State on Sunday, Hon. Olawepo-Hashim outlined a bold strategy aimed at expanding and diversifying Nigeria’s economy to achieve a minimum Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $4 trillion within a decade.

The former presidential candidate’s economic blueprint emphasized reducing Nigeria’s dependence on oil, leveraging the country’s vast agricultural and solid mineral resources, and boosting industrialization.

He said: “The key to Nigeria’s economic transformation is integrating agriculture and mineral resources with manufacturing. We must create an industrial base that contributes at least 40% to GDP, which will in turn generate millions of well-paying jobs”.

He also highlighted the need to improve Nigeria’s business environment by removing bureaucratic bottlenecks and ensuring policies that attract foreign and domestic investments.

His economic plan proposed major infrastructural investments, power sector reforms, and policies that would enhance the ease of doing business.
As the video gains traction across social media platforms, many Nigerians are revisiting his ideas, with some expressing regret that such a comprehensive vision was not implemented at the time.

Commentators have praised his foresight, especially in light of Nigeria’s current economic struggles, including high inflation, unemployment, and a weakening currency.

Beyond his 2018 campaign proposals, Olawepo-Hashim has remained active in economic empowerment initiatives.
His foundation, the Gbenga Hashim Foundation, disbursed N100 million in grants to small businesses in Kwara State in 2024, aiming to strengthen grassroots economic development.

His N200billion Mogboro Power Plant in Ogun State is also set to supply 24hours electricity to Mogboro, Mowe, Ibafo areas of Ogun State in partnership with Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

With renewed interest in his economic plan, some political analysts suggest that his vision could still serve as a model for Nigeria’s economic revival.

Whether policymakers will take cues from his proposals remains to be seen, but the resurfacing of his 2018 economic agenda has reignited discussions on practical pathways to national economic transformation.

A multidimensional energy policy expert and Executive Director of Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro), Mr. Abdulrazaq Hamzat, has called for wider adoption of captive power energy generation in order to accelerate the industrial growth of the country.

In a statement, Hamzat emphasised captive power energy generation role in sustaining industrial operations amidst chronic grid unreliability and called for policies that encourage rather than discourage its growth.

Hamzat is apparently reacting to the  recent comments by Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on the increasing reliance on captive power generation by industries and academic institutions.

Defending the trend, Hamzat said its vital role in sustaining industrial operations amidst chronic grid unreliability and called for policies that encourage rather than discourage its growth.

Hamzat’s remarks follow reports that over 250 manufacturers and institutions have disconnected from the national grid, citing frequent grid failures, high electricity costs, and damaging voltage fluctuations.

Collectively, these captive power operators produce an estimated 6,500 megawatts (MW) — significantly exceeding the 4,500–5,000 MW generated by the national grid.

According to him, “Without captive power, many industries would have closed down. Grid electricity may be cheaper, but reliability is indispensable for industrial survival. Captive power ensures dependable energy, which is essential for productivity.”

National Assembly Cautioned Against Passage of NGO Regulatory Bill /2025/01/16/national-assembly-cautioned-against-passage-of-ngo-regulatory-bill/ /2025/01/16/national-assembly-cautioned-against-passage-of-ngo-regulatory-bill/#respond Thu, 16 Jan 2025 01:47:56 +0000 /?p=1048196

A Non-Governmental Organisation based in Kwara State, Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI), has urged the National Assembly to have a rethink the NGO Regulatory Bill in order to save the country from its negative effects on the masses.

The National Assembly is currently considering the enactment of an Act to provide for the Establishment of NGO Regulatory Commission.

The bill which would supervise, coordinate and monitor NGOs and CSOs had gone through first and second readings and is presently at the committee phase at the House of Representatives.

A key issue that the Bill seeks to introduce is a new form of registration where the Board will have powers to license all NGOs.

Without the license of the Board, no NGO can operate. This is proposed by the Bill, notwithstanding extant laws regulating all aspects of the operations of voluntary organisations.

However, speaking in Ilorin, yesterday, on the sidelines of the sensitisation programme on gender justice and inclusiveness policy dialogue organised for people of Kwara Central Senatorial District at Adewole Ward in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state, the team lead of BBYDI, Mrs. Bashirah Abdulganiyu, stated that the bill if passed into law would affect the activities of NGOs in the country.

She said the current challenges in the country need the support of the non- governmental organisations so as to advance the needs and support of all and sundry.

She stated since the government cannot do it alone, hence there is need to have private sector to contribute to growth and development of the society.

She called on the representatives of the state at the national assembly to reject the idea of enacting a bill to regulate the activities of non-governmental organisations in the country.

Mrs. Abdulganiyu however noted further that placing more priority on a gender above the other is against the principles of justice and fairness.

According to her, parents should do away with the old fashion that place the male child above the female gender.

Mrs. Abdulganiyu said every child, irrespective of his gender, should be allowed to enjoy his right to education, and good moral upbringing among others.

In their presentation, the resource persons, Oluwadamilola Bamidele and Aisha Masu’d advised that the female child should be given the opportunity to acquire quality education.

They called on the youth to inculcate the habit of learning a trade or vocation while in school to make them self-reliant.

The duo urged parents to give equal rights to both male and female children in the interest of fairness and justice.

In her own presentation on Digital Rights and Gender Justice, Mrs. Rahma Aliyu, urged women to exercise caution in using internet and other social media handles.

She advised the elderly to reject temptation of giving out their secret datas to outsiders to prevent being defrauded by unsuspecting criminals.

Earlier in his address, the Alangua of Adewole Ward, in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state, Alhaji Hannafi Hussain, expressed joy on the initiative to organise the program.

He advised the facilitators of the programme to remain committed to their duties and work hard to ensure its success

The Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro) yesterday appealed to the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to lay down their arms and surrender ammunitions as part of peace effort to mark historic Biafra surrender to the federal government on January 13, 1970.

The foundation however said the historic event marked the end of the Nigerian-Biafra Civil War in the country.

PeacePro, in a statement issued in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Abdulrazaq Hamzat, commemorating the 53rd anniversary of the Biafra surrender to the federal government, emphasized the importance of respecting the peace agreement that prioritized reconciliation and national unity.

According to him, a human rights ambassador, IPOB’s armed struggle and violent approach contradicts the peaceful resolution embraced by Biafran leaders five decades ago.

He reminded IPOB that the declaration of “No Victor, No Vanquished” by the federal government laid the foundation for rebuilding and reintegration, urging the group to choose dialogue over conflict.

“The continued pursuit of violence by IPOB dishonors the memory of those who chose peace to stop further bloodshed in south east during the Biafra war”, he stated.

PeacePro also criticized calls for the unconditional release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu without a commitment to peace, describing it as a misguided approach that cannot achieve lasting stability or development.

“True peace and progress require acknowledgment of mistakes and a change in approach.

“IPOB’s violent activities have resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives and devastated the economy of the Southeast,” PeacePro noted.

The organization called on IPOB to recognize that sustainable peace is built on non-violent advocacy and peaceful negotiation, aligning with democratic principles and respect for human life.

Hamzat noted that, despite the factionalization of IPOB and attempts by various factions to denounce the other, both factions cannot be exonerated from the crisis in South East, especially with the activities of the unknown gun men and both factions must unite to take responsibility and work with the FG to end insecurity in the region.

PeacePro therefore urged the federal government to remain committed to inclusive dialogue, justice, and equity, ensuring that grievances are addressed within the framework of national unity.

As the country reflects on the lessons of the civil war, PeacePro reaffirmed its resolve to promote peace, demilitarization, and reconciliation across Nigeria, highlighting that dialogue, not conflict, is the path to a prosperous and united nation.

Fasakin, Vice Chancellor Trade Words over University of Ilorin Alumni Association Crisis /2025/01/14/fasakin-vice-chancellor-trade-words-over-university-of-ilorin-alumni-association-crisis/ /2025/01/14/fasakin-vice-chancellor-trade-words-over-university-of-ilorin-alumni-association-crisis/#respond Mon, 13 Jan 2025 23:44:00 +0000 /?p=1047642

The embattled factional National President of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association, Dr. Wale Fasakin and the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the institution, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), yesterday, traded words over the continued crisis rocking the Alumni Association of the University.

Dr. Fasakin, at a press conference on the crisis, accused the VC of allegedly behind the crisis rocking the association.

He said that the association was enjoying peace until 2023 when the VC allegedly sided with a steering committee that birthed the new national executive committee led by Professor Abdulrazaq Kilani.

But Prof. Egbewole (SAN), in its swift reaction yesterday. in Ilorin, blamed Fasakin, saying he is playing double standard on the crisis despite the fact that his tenure has ended on March 2024.

Egbewole explained: “I came on board in October 2023. I held a meeting with the two factions of Alumni Association in the crisis and I have a mandate with them “to go and withdraw your cases at the court and lets consider to resolve the issue as a family.”

However, Fasaki alleged the involvement of Professor Egbewole and others led to a court action with case number: KWS/66/2022 filed at the Ilorin High Court.

“The litigation was between the association’s executive committee and the caretaker/the past President and Professor Egbewole (SAN) which appeared on account of his alleged complicity in the amendment of the association’s constitution and as the chairman of ‘Constitution Amendment Committee’,” he stated.

He recalled that Professor Egbewole once invited the warring groups for dialogue only to allegedly align with another contesting faction.

“On his appointment as the new VC, Egbewole appealed to the alumni body to withdraw from the law court, the existing case against him and others, promising to attend to the matter in a way that justice would be seen to have been served.

“We agreed to the counsel and admonition of the presiding judge by taking the matter out of court.

“Consequently, the VC invited us the executive committee to a meeting with the steering committee that he allegedly midwifed as well as members of the caretaker committee.

“True to our suspicion that he would not be interested in serving justice, he pronounced that the democratically elected executive committee of the association, headed by Dr. Stephen Olawale Fasakin, should give up their tenure and join hands with the steering committee and caretaker committee to organize a so called “Unity Congress” in order to elect a new set of National Executive Committee”.

Fasakin, who said some members of the association objected to the proposition, added it was the convention that was organised afterwards that produced Professor Kilani and others who are now the new Executive Committee.

However, Egbewole said: “No one represented him (Fasakin) at the meeting, Dr. Wale Fasakin and his team personally attended the meeting and the two factions withdrew their case in the court and set up Unity Conference Committee with the two factions represented while the university appointed chairman.

“In creditably, two days after this meeting in the presence of Dr. Wale Fasakin and his team, I received a letter from a body of Committee of Chairmen of chapters or branches and said I have no business in the affairs of the Alumni since it is not an appendage or unit of the University.

“As a lawyer, I respected them and what I did is that if I cannot then the body of the past presidents of the Alumni should be able to resolve the issue.

“The body of the past presidents then constituted another committee for what they called Unity Conference that was late 2022 and for that reason I opted out from the issue.”

Egbewole explained further that, “Sometimes in 2023, I met Dr. Wale Fasakin as he came here two or three times and after that, I told him that this is not honourable because if I sat down and agreed, of course, this was not the first time he had been doing this double standard as the past presidents met, Dr. Wale Fasakin  wrote in his writing and when the time comes we will unfold all the documents to show the world.

“Dr. Fasakin wrote on behalf of his team executive committee that the past presidents of the Alumni should call a meeting of the National Executive Committee to resolve the issue.

“The National Executive Committee met prior to my assumption of office as VC of the university and a meeting was called where executive committee of the Dr. Fasakin and other factions were in attendance but at the end of the day, Dr. Fasakin did another thing else.

“Dr. Fasakin later begged me and apologised. We later saw each other at the University of Abuja with one of his executive committee members and also asked me to resolve the issue again and even visited me at my hotel on the need to have a change of my mind to resolve the issue and which I declined to involve on the issue again.

“I asked him to go back to the Committee of past presidents and whatever the outcome of the meeting, the university is ready to support you.

“And what I heard later was that the committee of past presidents held an election and of course the term of Dr. Wale Fasakin tenure is for a specific term. It is not a life president and the term ended ordinarily on March 2024.

“So, if you have a tenure of four years from 2020, will you be parading yourself again in 2025 and as a matter of fact, University of Ilorin Alumni Association is a responsible association. It is association we are proud of and we will continue to cherish the association forever.”

Governor Babangana Zulum of Borno State yesterday urged Nigerian youth to imbibe the culture of humility and hardwork.

Zulum also challenged faith-based institutions in the country to produce graduates trained in spirituality and morality in order to bail Nigeria out of its current moral decadence of corruption and social vices.

The governor made the submissions in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Tuesday while delivering the 20th anniversary lecture of the first Islamic faith-based university in Nigeria, the Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, themed, “Two decades of Excellence: Al-Hikmah University’s Impact on Scholarship and Educational Development in Nigeria”.

Zulum who said he was a son of a peasant farmer and a commercial driver that was plying Maiduguri-Okene-Ibadan roads, advised youth to imbibe culture of respect for parents, sacrifice for humanity and love for hardwork.

The governor also said that short-cut to anything in life usually ends in regret and disaster, adding that, “hardwork is good but humility takes you far in life”.

“Hardwork is one thing. But humility is the best. When I finished my Master’s degree, I went to my village to go to farm with my parents. I could have remained in Maiduguri wearing babanrigan, but because I have to be obedient to my parents that is why I am what I am today”, he said.

In his address at the 20th anniversary dinner/award night of the university, the vice chancellor, Professor Noah Yusuf, said that the most pressing challenge of the university is inadequate funds.

The VC also said that the spiral effect of the funding challenge is the inability to meet some critical needs of the university.

Professor Yusuf therefore appealed for support from friends of the university in the following areas – construction of hostels to be endowed after the name of the donor, construction of faculty building to be endowed in the name of the donor, joint construction of classrooms and offices to be endowed in the name of the donors, scholarship grant to indigent students and research funding for academic staff of the university.

Also speaking, the former governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Aminu Masari, described the founder of Al-Hikmah University, Dr. Abdulraeem Oladimeji, as a great contributor to quality education in Nigeria.

The two-term former governor of Katsina State said that Oladimeji’s efforts at prioritizing education in Nigeria have contributed meaningful impact in the lives of Nigerian youths.

Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria, (MUSWEN), the umbrella body for all Muslim Communities/Councils and all Muslim organisations in the six states of South West of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo States of the country yesterday lauded the management of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) over the recent appointment of Alhaji Alidu Shutti as the acting Secretary of the Commission.

Alhaji Shutti, an astute Hajj administrator was appointed as the acting Secretary of the NAHCON following the voluntary resignation of the former Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Abdullah Kotangora.

In a signed statement issued by MUSWEN and made available to newsmen in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Tuesday the MUSWEN President and Deputy President-General (South) of Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo, described the appointment of Alhaji Shutti as a round peg in a round hole considering his long years’ experience in the management of Hajji Affairs in the country.

The statement read: “The Chairman of NAHCON is highly commended for this well-thought-out decision of looking inwards to identify an experienced hand, versed in your operations.

“This is, as opposed to the approach of appointing someone who will still require going through training and induction into the culture and the inner workings of NAHCON.

“Alihamdulli Llaah, for your painstaking thoroughness, Mr. Chairman.

“May Allah (SWT) continue to guide your thoughts and your ways.

“Once again, as we congratulate Alhaji Alidu Shutti, the Acting Secretary, we highly commend Prof. Abdullah Usman Saleh, Chairman/CEO, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for this thoughtful appointment.

“May Almighty Allah continue to help the organisation, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), as you make efforts towards making Hajj easier for Nigerians.

“We also look forward to fostering a good partnership with you in the South West, as you steer the ship of blissful Hajj for our teeming Muslim brothers and sisters in Nigeria”.

The statement however urged the new acting secretary of the NAHCON “to bring his experience in running Hajj operations, which he has garnered and deployed over the years, to manifestly reflect in this new position of responsibility, for the benefit of the entire Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.”

Controversy Follows Sack of Seven Lecturers at Kwara Polytechnic in Ilorin /2025/01/08/controversy-follows-sack-of-seven-lecturers-at-kwara-polytechnic-in-ilorin/ /2025/01/08/controversy-follows-sack-of-seven-lecturers-at-kwara-polytechnic-in-ilorin/#respond Wed, 08 Jan 2025 03:30:39 +0000 /?p=1046182

There was controversy yesterday in Kwara State over the purported sacking of seven lecturers at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.

The state government announced the recruitment of 1,811 teachers for primary schools across the state to boost education of primary schools’ pupils.

The sacked lecturers, according to Ƶ checks, were allegedly relieved of their appointments due to alleged insubordination and being members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

It was further learnt the sacked lecturers were employed last year when the institution sought appointment of more lecturers.

Ƶ gathered that the affected lecturers were also accused of working against the return of the incumbent rector of the institution, Engineer Abdul Jimoh, for a second term in office.

Contacted on the development, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Garba Haleemah, said the seven disengaged lecturers were not sacked based on their alleged political affiliations.

According to her, “The staff were not sacked based on political affiliations.”

Haleemah, in a statement issued in Ilorin, which she personally signed on behalf of the management of the institution, said, “The polytechnic management wishes to clarify that this exercise does not target anyone.

“It is purely an internal review and cost-saving measure that involved the movement of some old hands and, inevitably, rightsising of a few new hands whose employments were still probationary.

“It was not a decision taken in haste or without due considerations; we, therefore, appeal that such exercise should not be politicised.

“The polytechnic is undergoing significant restructuring, including increased use of technology to improve efficiency, reduce cost, and enhance service delivery in line with global best practices.”

However, a pro-democracy group in the state, People’s Voice Advocacy Network (PVAN), condemned the dismissal of the lecturers for their alleged membership of an opposition political party.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Yusuf Obe, the group described the sack of the individuals as “politically motivated, callous, reprehensible and unacceptable”. It called for their immediate reinstatement.

According to PVAN, “Our findings revealed that six of the dismissed workers are from Ilorin, Kwara Central, while the other person hails from Kwara South, and no concrete reason was given for their sacking other than ‘their service is no longer needed.’”

The group added, “This is no doubt a politically motivated decision. It is callous, reprehensible, unacceptable and a direct assault on Kwara youth, especially those who harbour opinions different from those of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“As the voice of the people, we demand the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of the dismissed workers and call on the governor to publicly disassociate himself from this oppressive act carried out by his personal aide.

“Furthermore, we urge him to take decisive action against those responsible for this shameful display of political intimidation.”

Meanwhile, the state government announced the recruitment of   1,811 basic school teachers and attendants across the primary schools in the state.

A statement by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), which was signed by the press secretary of the board, Mrs. Aminat Atere, said the recruitment was based on A recent process involving at least 55,713 applicants from across the state.

The statement said, “The breakdown of the successful applicants included 1,500 teachers, mostly from STEM subjects, and 311 non-teaching staff, comprising drivers, security guards, and office assistants for schools in the 16 local government areas of the state.

“Successful applicants with valid phone numbers have since been contacted for their letters. Documentation started on Monday, January 6, with successful applicants from Kwara North, Tuesday, January 7, is for new hires from Kwara South, while Wednesday, January 8, is for successful candidates from Kwara Central.”

The statement added, “Documents required during documentation include original and two photocopies of all credentials; two file jackets and tags; citizenship certificate; two passport photographs; bond signing; biodata form to be filled, among other things”.

The statement said the process focused more on hiring persons who would stay in their place of assignment, underscoring why the board sought nominations of competent and qualified hands from rural communities to bridge the manpower need in the hinterlands.

A former presidential candidate, and founder of Gbenga Hashim Foundation, Hon. Gbenga Hashim, yesterday, reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development with the disbursement of over N100 million to boost small businesses across Kwara State.

Hashim disclosed the disbursement on Monday in Ilorin, while distributing N12.5 million to small businesses in the state.

According to him, the disbursement of N12.5 million brings the foundation’s total cash empowerment in 2024 in the state to nearly N100 million.

He said, “Beyond Kwara, the foundation has implemented similar initiatives in states, like Osun, Kogi, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), showcasing its nationwide dedication to fostering economic self-reliance.

“In Kwara State, the 2024 empowerment programme supported 1,000 small business owners across all 16 local government areas, providing critical funding to help them enhance their livelihoods and expand their operations.”

Represented at the event by Hon. Abdulrazaq Hamzat, Hashim encouraged beneficiaries to use the grant wisely, emphasising that proper utilisation could qualify them for larger support in the future.

“If you use this small grant well and show us the result of your engagement, you will qualify for another phase, which will be bigger,” he stated.

Beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude for the initiative, which many described as a lifeline for struggling businesses.

One of the beneficiaries, Mariam Ajao, shared her experience. “I came because I have benefited from the Gbenga Hashim Empowerment. They credited the support to our account since last week, and when I heard this event was coming up, I felt I had to be here, even though it is not compulsory,” Ajao said.

Alhaja Aladi, a long-time associate of Hashim, commended his integrity and leadership. “Gbenga Hashim is a man of integrity and a leader, who carries everyone along. I encourage all attendees to imbibe his values in the course of their business,” she said.

Representing other coordinators, Ilorin East Local Government Coordinator, Kolapo Olaitan, highlighted the unique structure of the programme, stating that beneficiaries are credited before the event.

Olaitan said, “We are here as representatives of larger beneficiaries to commend the foundation for this initiative.

“Gbenga Hashim Foundation did not ask people to converge here to collect empowerment; everyone had already received their funds.”

Abbas Stresses Urgent Diversification of Nation’s Economy for Sustainable Economic Growth /2024/12/31/abbas-stresses-urgent-diversification-of-nations-economy-for-sustainable-economic-growth/ /2024/12/31/abbas-stresses-urgent-diversification-of-nations-economy-for-sustainable-economic-growth/#respond Tue, 31 Dec 2024 03:14:39 +0000 /?p=1044078

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, on Monday, underscored the urgent need to harness Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, fertile agricultural lands, burgeoning creative industries, and vibrant technology sector, to build a resilient economy

Abbas said the move would ensure diversification of the nation’s economy and provide long-term growth and sustainability.

The speaker made the submissions in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, while delivering the 14th convocation lecture of Al-Hikma University, located in the Adewole area of Ilorin

He decried the continued dependence of the country’s economy on oil, saying this can only lead to inequality, greater poverty among Nigerians, and mass unemployment.

At the convocation lecture titled, “Beyond oil: Exploring Alternative Revenue Potentials for Economic Growth and Sustainable Development in Nigeria,” Abbas said, “The harness of the nation’s abundant resources and human capital would also go a long way to secure Nigeria’s economic future while the country must decisively move beyond oil and develop sustainable pathways for inclusive growth.”

According to him, “With dwindling oil revenues, global shifts toward renewable energy, and the increasing need for job creation, it is imperative that we chart a new course for economic transformation.

“This requires deliberate efforts to unlock the potential of other sectors, such as agriculture, solid minerals, technology and the creative industries.

“Achieving this transformation will secure Nigeria’s economic future and address poverty, inequality, and unemployment – critical barriers to sustainable development.”

The speaker said countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates, had demonstrated that economic transformation was achievable through deliberate diversification strategies anchored on policy reforms, infrastructure investments, and human capital development.

He stated, “This lecture has underscored the urgency of harnessing Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, fertile agricultural lands, burgeoning creative industries, and vibrant technology sector to build a resilient economy.

“Targeted policies, institutional reforms and partnerships can unlock the potential in agriculture, solid minerals, manufacturing, ICT and renewable energy.”

Abbas said Nigeria’s economic transformation demanded collective responsibility, adding that the government must lead with visionary policies, transparent governance, and strategic investments in infrastructure and education.

He said the legislature needed to enact enabling legislations and ensure rigorous oversight of policies and programmes aimed at economic diversification.

“Academia has a vital role in conducting research, generating data-driven insights and developing skills essential for the new economy,” he said.

The speaker advised the country’s universities to strengthen collaboration with industries in order to drive innovation and entrepreneurship. He said the private sector must embrace investments in emerging industries, support small and medium enterprises and leverage technology to boost productivity.

Abbas stated, “As the backbone of Nigeria’s workforce, youths, including all of you in this hall, must seize opportunities in entrepreneurship, agriculture, digital technology and creative industries to redefine Nigeria’s economic narrative.

“Examples from countries like Malaysia and Singapore demonstrate how aligning government policies, academic research, and private-sector innovations can drive transformation.

“Malaysia’s focus on manufacturing and industrialisation, coupled with sustained investments in education and technology, propelled it into a diversified economy.

“Singapore leveraged its strategic policies and talent pool to become a global hub for finance and innovation.

“These models show that with sustained commitment, Nigeria can achieve economic stability and prosperity.”
