A chief lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Dr. Omobayo Raheem, has called on the media to draw the attention of citizens and leaders to the transformative potential of artificial intelligence.

He emphasised the importance of proactive government involvement in harnessing AI for national development.

Raheem stated this while delivering the college’s 17th inaugural lecture titled ‘Capacitance of Artificial Intelligence: Communication, Framing and Learning a Growing Economy’.

He described AI as a powerful tool for enhancing communication and improving teaching and learning when used responsibly and strategically. He noted that AI can foster creativity, critical thinking, and increased computational capacity with the right infrastructure and guidance.

“The significant benefits and objectives of integrating AI into our daily lives, industries, organisations, and educational institutions, he said, can be achieved without compromising essential human skills and judgment,” he said.

He stressed the need for Nigeria to embrace AI, warning that the nation risks falling further behind if urgent steps are not taken to overcome key barriers to adoption.

“AI is no longer a futuristic concept, but a current reality reshaping industries across the globe. Artificial Intelligence has come to stay.  Individuals, companies, factories and even entire economies are making the best use of it. Nigeria cannot afford to be aloof or lag behind,” the don stated.

However, the lecturer pointed to a number of challenges hindering Nigeria’s ability to tap into AI’s full potential, such as poverty, energy insecurity, corruption, and terrorism. He stressed that his objective was not to delve into the technical complexities of AI, such as robotics or coding, but to highlight the socio-economic obstacles that must be addressed to allow for meaningful adoption.

Raheem urged media professionals to leverage AI tools for story framing and content generation, noting that these tools can enhance productivity and message clarity.

“Framing goes a long way in determining the kind of journalist you are,” he said, adding that framing should be done purposefully to achieve clear communicative goals.

He also cautioned against overreliance on AI in educational settings. While acknowledging its usefulness in aiding research and writing, he warned that unchecked usage could compromise genuine learning.

He compared AI tools to calculators, which are useful for practice but inappropriate during examinations.

“AI has helped us in finance, education, and communication, but if it is not well integrated, it will only widen the gap between us and the rest of the world,” he said, urging stakeholders to see AI as an opportunity, rather than a threat.

In an economy where academic degrees no longer guarantee employment, social entrepreneur and Executive Director of the EGO Foundation, Toluwase Olaniyan, has called for skills-based empowerment across the country.

Olaniyan stated that he has dedicated the last decade to equipping young Nigerians with practical, employable skills through initiatives that target digital literacy, vocational training, and youth development.

“My journey began in Zaria, Kaduna State, where I  organised grassroots training sessions aimed at underserved communities,” said Olaniyan.

Today, he leads national programmes like GhettoTechStars, SheEnabled, SkillUP and Enterprise Corner, designed to bridge the gap between education and the real-world skills required in today’s job market.

“Skills are the new currency, and our young people must be equipped to compete not just locally, but globally,” he said.

His work includes targeted initiatives like GlobalHer, which provides tech training for young women, and Project YIP (Young Innovators Programme), a platform that connects post-secondary students with hands-on tech experience. The programs, he noted,  have reached over 25,000 individuals, due to strategic partnerships with the organisations like Access Bank, and the vocational education boards across the country.

Olaniyan explained that he is expanding his efforts further with the launch of ‘Workskills’, an initiative aimed at scaling vocational training nationwide.

He is also introducing the National Student Entrepreneurship programme, which includes a N1 million grant to support student-led innovations.

“By challenging outdated perceptions of vocational education and promoting it as a viable path to success, we are reshaping how Nigerian youth view their future. The goal is to make opportunity accessible to everyone,” the executive director said.

The promoter, Natural Word Restoration, Morenike Tejuade Babington-Ashaye, has called for dramatic changes to global governance, societal structure, territorial ownership, and human conduct.

Babington-Ashaye in a statement titled, ‘God’s Executive Orders’ which she ascribed to divine instruction, stressed land restitution, geopolitical realignment, abolition of monarchies and political parties.

She expressed God’s displeasure with current global systems marked by inequality, war, greed, and injustice.

According to her, “the world has reached a moral crisis point where power and wealth are concentrated in the hands of a select few, monarchs and political elites have failed humanity, and global systems are rife with inequality, war, and environmental abuse.

“God has reportedly declared a universal restructuring project, to take place between 2024 and 2030, with Nigeria selected as the pilot nation.”

Babington-Ashaye stressed global restructuring which spans from 2024 to 2030, with three phases; foundation (2024), experimental (2025–2027), and practice (2027–2030). “God’s promise is made clear; nations and individuals who resist or mock the new world restoration will face divine wrath,” she stated

In the statement, she added that nations are instructed to return to their original geographical boundaries as they existed before foreign interference and colonisation, adding that those whose ancestors were enslaved are granted dual blessings; full rights in both the land of their ancestors and where they currently reside.

“Nations must now be created based on shared language and ancestry. Unions between people of different languages must begin as independent nations before forming alliances,” she stated.

The promoter condemned gangsterism, cultism, and occult practices, saying these must cease immediately.

“There is a divine directive to eradicate poverty by distributing 50 per cent of resource revenue directly to households. Innocent prisoners must be released, and torture abolished.

“All wars and military occupations outside sovereign borders are banned. God has forbidden the manufacture and trade of weapons of mass destruction. Nations are also to be formed based on linguistic identity, with unions allowed only among already established nations.

“Monarchies and political parties are to be abolished by June 1, 2027. God will become the direct head of governance, with appointed elders replacing traditional political leaders. Africa is to be reshaped under the guidance of Dr. Arikana Quao and a council of elders,” the statement reads.

•Asks Ibas to report to National Assembly for approvals

•Crisis a deliberate politically-induced coma, says Dele Momodu

Funmi Ogundare in Lagos and Juliet Akoje in Abuja

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has inaugurated a 21-man committee to oversee the affairs of the sole administration in Rivers State.

The Speaker stated that with the declaration of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and dissolution of the state House of Assembly, the National Assembly has the constitutional responsibility of making and amending laws for the state.

While charging the House Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State Oversight with monitoring the activities of the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), Abbas asked the administrator to report to the National Assembly for legislative approvals.

He said, “It is instructive to recall past instances where our nation has faced similar challenges. We witnessed state emergencies in Plateau State in 2004 and Ekiti State in 2006. Similarly, in 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States after a series of deadly attacks by terrorists and militant groups. In those periods of dire security and governance challenges, the National Assembly assumed a vital role in upholding constitutional order.

“When state institutions were suspended, the intervention of the National Assembly ensured continuity in governance. Our actions today are grounded in Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution, which confers upon us the authority to make laws for any state whose elected legislative body is unable to perform its statutory functions.

“Accordingly, in response to the President’s declaration and in accordance with our constitutional duty, the Official Gazette of the State of Emergency was duly transmitted to both the House and Senate.

“On 20th March 2025, the chambers deliberated extensively and approved the President’s request with significant amendments designed to reinforce democratic safeguards and ensure robust oversight.

“These resolutions were duly forwarded to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for implementation. The Certified True Copies of this will be made available to this committee.

“It is paramount to note that the current administration in Rivers State is inherently temporary. With the suspension of the State Governor, Mr. Siminalayi Fubara, and the entire House of Assembly, a caretaker administration has been installed under the stewardship of Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.).

“His role is strictly circumscribed, as he is charged with maintaining law and order and ensuring that the basic functions of governance are met only until full democratic governance is restored”

“The administrator is required to operate with the highest levels of transparency and accountability, reporting directly to the National Assembly on all matters that pertain to the peace, order and good government of the State as prescribed by the Constitution.”

The Speaker noted that the moment marked not only a critical milestone in the parliament’s constitutional mandate but also a display of the lawmakers’ dedication to transparent governance and the rule of law in the country.

Rivers State Crisis a Deliberate Politically Induced  Coma,  Says Dele Momodu

A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Publisher of Ovation Magazine, Bashorun Dele Momodu, has criticised the political developments in Rivers State, alleging it was a calculated attempt to destabilise the region for personal and political gain.

Momodu, who spoke during an interview on Arise Prime-time, accused powerful political figures of deliberately inducing turmoil in the oil-rich state.

“There was no political upheaval in Rivers, it was deliberately induced,” he said, likening the state’s situation to ‘an induced coma’.

He pointed fingers at former governor,  Nyesom Wike, saying his refusal to relinquish control even after a ministerial appointment played a key role in the unfolding crisis.

According to Momodu,  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to appoint a sole administrator in Rivers was “a move to dismantle or even destroy and reconstitute the structures” of governance, further inflaming tensions.

“What happened was daylight robbery,” he said, emphasising that despite calls for a state of emergency, no formal declaration was ever made, and legal experts, including the Nigerian Bar Association, found such a move unconstitutional.

He noted that similar political tactics were surfacing in Bayelsa.

“The governor is already crying out, asking for rescue,” he added, describing the scenario as a dangerous trend of attempting to ‘pocket’ an entire state.

On the U.S. court ruling ordering American intelligence and law enforcement agencies to release information linked to a 1990s money laundering investigation, the PDP chieftain dismissed the case’s significance in Nigeria’s current political climate.

“I don’t think Nigerians are moved by anything again,” he said. “People have become indifferent.”

On the ongoing sexual harassment dispute involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the publisher called for resolution and reconciliation.

“She should return to the Senate. Her constituents voted for her,” he emphasised, while also acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations and the need for due process.

When asked about his relationship with President Tinubu, Momodu stated: “I see him as a big brother. But I place my country above self.”

The Head of Peaceville International School in Ogun, Ms. Dolapo Fatoki, has stressed the need for quality education and guidance in curbing bullying among students.

Fatoki, who stated this during a recent media parley, explained that the school’s approach to discipline and moral education is designed to help children develop into responsible individuals.

She explained how the school balances the British curriculum with Nigerian cultural and values to create a supportive and secure learning environment.

“Peaceville International School strives to nurture students who are not only equipped with global knowledge but also grounded in Nigerian traditions and ethics,” she stated.

“While we follow the British curriculum in many aspects, we don’t lose sight of the Nigerian values that are essential to our students’ growth,” Fatoki added.

She stated that the Nigerian curriculum is an integral part of the school’s teaching, especially in subjects like government, “every student here studies Nigerian government and is assessed on it.”

While integrating global curricula, such as the British, is common in international schools, Fatoki elaborated on how the school approaches the dual system.

“The layout of the British curriculum, in terms of what a child should know, is the same in both the UK and here. However, the difference lies in how it is delivered,” Fatoki stated. “It’s about marrying these global standards with local values to create a learning environment that is both enriching and culturally relevant.”

She also emphasised developing soft skills such as respect, communication and etiquette, which are taught through the Skills Builder UK curriculum, saying that what truly sets Peaceville apart is the school’s integration of religious values into the academic environment.

On the specific gap the school aims to fill, Fatoki spoke about the holistic approach to education.

“Our aim is not just to educate children academically but to raise leaders who are well-rounded, morally grounded, and culturally aware,” Fatoki explained. “We are preparing them for the world but with a strong understanding of who they are as Nigerians, rooted in values that will serve them throughout their lives.”

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo,  yesterday, identified as one of his major feats, the creation of Homeland Security, which he claimed has made the state one of the safest in the country.

Highlighting the significant improvements in the state’s security situation, Soludo, in a televised interview to mark his third year in office, recalled a time when criminal gangs had a firm grip on local governments, causing widespread fear.

However, with the introduction of the state’s new homeland security law and the creation of a modern security framework, Anambra, he said, had transformed into one of the safest states in Nigeria.

“We’ve implemented a thorough security strategy that addresses the root causes of crime, including cultism, kidnapping, and drug abuse,” he explained.

He also acknowledged the crucial role of cooperation between state and federal security agencies in achieving these results.

Emphasised his strides in the state’s healthcare system in the past three years, the governor explained that Anambra recently won the national prize for primary health, securing a prize of $700,000, and was also named the South-east regional champion in the same category.

“This is not just any award. It reflects the hard work we have put into our health sector, especially primary health,” Soludo remarked, noting the state’s dedication to enhancing its healthcare infrastructure.

Since assuming office, Soludo’s administration has refurbished 326 primary health centres across all electoral wards, ensuring that each facility was equipped with necessary medical personnel and resources.

More than 1,000 healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, had been recruited to bolster the state’s health system.

Anambra’s focus on improving maternal health was also a key highlight. The state, Soludo noted, introduced free antenatal care, including free drugs and delivery services, benefiting over 102,000 women.

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, yesterday reaffirmed African School of Governance (ASG), commitment towards addressing a leadership gap through training focused on corporate governance, gender equity, and public-private collaboration.

Moghalu who made this submission at an information session in Lagos, explained that the biggest challenge facing governance in Africa is not just leadership but also followership.

He stated that educating both leaders and the governed is essential for creating accountable and effective systems.

According to him, “education is the key to transforming governance in Africa.  ASG seeks to nurture a new generation of leaders by offering programmes that emphasise policy innovation, ethical governance, and economic development.”

He stressed the importance of training future African leaders to think differently, acquire new skills, and lead in a transformative way.

Moghalu, who serves as the inaugural president of the African School of Governance (ASG), Kigali, Rwanda, underscored the critical role of education in shaping both leadership and followership across the continent. He noted that poor governance in Africa “stems from a lack of structured leadership education.”

He stressed the need to embrace and promote African culture, noting that development must be rooted in indigenous identity rather than external influences.

“We have to learn governance in the context of Africa. We are Africans, and we must now think in that way, not copy and paste from other civilisations or other cultures. We have our own cultures,” he stated.

He further stressed the importance of acknowledging traditional institutions in governance, adding that the exclusion of traditional systems from governance has created tension, which could be resolved by formally integrating them in advisory roles.

“Traditional institutions and traditional leaders must be part of governance in our societies. They are a reality, but we continue to ignore them,” he noted

Speaking on ASG’s short and long-term goals, the president outlined the immediate priority as successfully recruiting for the Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) programmes, both set to launch in June.

In the medium term, he noted that ASG aims to have its first cohort graduate within two years and assess its impact within five years. “Over the long term, the institution plans to evaluate the influence of its alumni on governance in Africa and globally over a 10-year period.

He acknowledged the challenges of establishing a unique institution like ASG, identifying skepticism about governance education as one of such huddles to cross at the early stage of the initiative.

He emphasised the need for inspirational teachers and a strong philosophical foundation rooted in Africa’s history and cultural evolution.

In her remarks, Ngozichukwu Njemanze, Director and Senior Policy Adviser, as well as Chief of Staff to the President of ASG, said ASG aims to equip professionals in both the public and private sectors with interdisciplinary skills tailored to African challenges.

As the country struggles with the growing challenges of cancer care, Dr. Habeeb Yakub, Chief Clinical Coordinator at the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi-Araba Cancer Centre, weekend, called for a comprehensive approach to address the rising burden of the disease.

Dr. Yakub who made this call at a program to commemorate the 2025 World Cancer Day, in Lagos, expressed concern about the significant obstacles facing the country’s cancer care system, including insufficient funding, limited access to quality treatment, and a worrying trend of brain drain among healthcare professionals.

Yakub who also leads the oncology teams stressed the importance of enhancing insurance coverage and raising awareness to effectively combat the disease.
He believes that with collective efforts, Nigeria can improve cancer care outcomes and ease the burden on its citizens.

He identified key challenges including widespread cultural misinformation and financial barriers that hinder access to treatment, stressing the need for a robust insurance system to ensure that patients can receive quality care without the financial strain of out-of-pocket expenses.

“There is a cultural misinformation that is widespread among the population, but the financial challenge is also significant. We need a strong medical insurance system. If people can access treatment without paying out of pocket, more individuals will seek care,” Yakub stated.

The oncologist, who also lectures at the University of Lagos, lamented the high rate of doctors leaving the country, stating, “over 50 per cent of our graduates are leaving the country. The ‘Japa syndrome’ is a serious issue.”

He also pointed to the lack of facilities and equipment as another major hindrance, saying: “even the equipment we do have is limited to a few centers, and many do not have the necessary facilities to treat cancer, such as linear accelerators or brachytherapy machines.”

Dr. Yakub emphasized the significance of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in strengthening cancer care, citing the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre as an example.

He revealed that the center has treated over 12,000 patients since its opening and highlighted the role of Siemens Healthineers in improving care at the facility.
The partnership with Siemens Healthineers has provided the center with cutting-edge equipment, including four linear accelerators, the highest number in West Africa. The Oncologist attributed the success of the center to the support from both NSIA and Siemens Healthineers, which has provided both the necessary technology and training to healthcare professionals.

He urged the government to prioritize PPPs in addressing cancer care, pointing out that the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre has also developed a training program, MedSafe, which has welcomed radiotherapy therapists, medical physicists, clinical oncologists, and oncology nurses from various tertiary institutions.

The collaboration with Siemens Healthineers, Yakub noted, has even attracted healthcare professionals from the Nigerian diaspora to return home and contribute to the country’s healthcare development.

Meanwhile, Siemens Healthineers has reaffirmed its commitment to improving healthcare in Nigeria. Tisha Boatman, Executive Vice President, Head of External Affairs and Healthcare Access, in a statement, reiterated the company’s ongoing partnership with the LUTH-NSIA Cancer Centre to deliver quality care to patients.

Boatman emphasized Siemens Healthineers’ commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria, stating that the company will continue collaborating with healthcare providers to build a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem, ranging from diagnostics to therapy and follow-up, while also developing the necessary workforce.

“We will continue working with NSIA to support Nigeria in building a holistic healthcare ecosystem – from diagnostics to therapy and follow-up – while developing the necessary workforce.

“At Siemens Healthineers, we are on a mission to create a world without the fear of cancer,” Boatman stated.

Vice-Chancellor of the African School of Economics, Prof. Mahfouz Adedimeji, has urged Nigerians to approach artificial intelligence with ethical considerations.

He stressed the importance of establishing protocols, policies, and frameworks to protect the core values that are important to humans. He said this is crucial to prevent technology from eventually dominating and deceiving humans.

Prof. Adedimeji spoke recently at the maiden public lecture of the university, ‘Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Higher Education in Africa’.

In his paper, ‘The Past is Present, The Present is Now’, he explained that humanity today stands precariously at the brink of a precipice with fascinating and disruptive technologies that can be used to make life easy and, at the same time, abused.

He described artificial intelligence as a current reality that permeates various facets of human lives, with its amazing potential in education.

“It is part of the past that is still present, and it is an innovation that will still shape the future, and the future is here already,” the VC stated.

With AI, he noted that it is possible for students to receive personalised instruction, adding, “We can also analyse vast amounts of data and gain insights into how each student learns best. AI opens new doors to customised learning experience that nurtures each student’s potential. With instructional tools, education can be more dynamic, engaging and interactive, sparking curiosity, igniting creative thinking and fostering a love for lifelong learning.”

He also noted the indispensable role of AI in facilitating access to education.

“We know that AI can facilitate global access to quality education, the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs), and bring world-class resources to remote and underserved areas, thereby breaking down geographical barriers and democratising access to knowledge.

“Students anywhere can also have access to the same cutting-edge materials and expert instruction available somewhere, levelling the playing field like never before. The opportunities are limitless,” Adedimeji said.

Prof Ibrahim Adeyanju, a cybersecurity expert and Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Limited, stressed the urgent need for African leaders to modernise and revolutionise education through AI. He highlighted the crucial role of education in driving sustainable development and fostering socio-economic growth.

“Despite Africa’s recent progress, the continent still faces significant educational challenges, limiting its ability to compete globally,” Adeyanju explained.

He also pointed out that issues such as low teacher effectiveness and high rates of out-of-school children are major obstacles to educational development in Africa. He called for the integration of AI to tackle these challenges, suggesting that AI could transform education by enhancing language learning, utilising chatbots, and offering virtual classrooms.

AI could also provide personalised learning experiences and improve access to quality education, especially in remote areas, Adeyanju stated.

To address these issues, Adeyanju recommended several steps, including the creation of culturally relevant and ethical AI frameworks, comprehensive training for educators, bridging digital divides through targeted initiatives, and promoting locally developed AI solutions.

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to unveil a policy document on the ethical use of artificial intelligence in academic activities.

The move is aimed at enhancing critical thinking rather than fostering plagiarism and academic indolence.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Prof. Bola Oboh, stated this recently at the opening ceremony of a three-day workshop on ‘Higher Education Ethics’, facilitated by a Fulbright Specialist awardee and Deputy Ethics Officer at Texas A&M University, Central Texas, USA, Prof. Russell Porter, and organised by the Office of International Relations, Partnerships and Prospects (IRPP) of UNILAG.

Oboh described the training as sacrosanct, emphasising the importance of ethics in the tertiary education sector.

Speaking with journalists, she highlighted the university’s commitment to maintaining ethical standards and ongoing efforts to develop policy documents to address ethical concerns for artificial intelligence use in academic works.

She noted that the application of AI in academia is inevitable. Academic institutions globally must ensure that the tools only aid the intellectual endowments of users and do not disrupt quality academic standards.

“If we say no to AI, we will just be deceiving ourselves. So, we have already started developing policies in that area as a university. In the next one or two months, I’m sure the policy will be finally taken to the senate for consideration,” said Oboh.

She added, “Whether we like it or not, our students are already using it, and some lecturers are also using it to check for plagiarised works. So we have made the student realise that while they can use AI, the idea of being able to think critically, using their thoughts and mind, should not be thrown away. It is when you just pick things online and dump them as received that it becomes a serious ethical problem.”

She said that when the AI policy is finally adopted, it will enhance critical thinking rather than fostering plagiarism and laziness among staff and students.

Prof. Porter described the ethical considerations surrounding using AI and Machine Learning (ML) in research and academic work as a global concern.

He recalled a previous conference held at UNILAG, where he discussed AI ethics and reiterated the importance of carefully implementing AI tools to avoid ethical and legal violations.

He acknowledged ongoing research works across the world in this area and the need for continuous vigilance and adaptation.

During one of the sessions, Dr. Babatunde Sawyer, the Research Lead,  at Machine Intelligence Research Group (MIRG) and a lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, UNILAG,  addressed participants on AI, its accountability, validity, reliability, explainability, security and privacy.

WiFiCombat Academy, a pioneer in Africa’s educational technology sector, has reiterated its commitment to revolutionizing access to education through innovative tools and solutions.

The founder, Dele Tejuoso, explained that the academy is committed to equipping students across Africa with future-ready skills and personalised career guidance, catering to learners from primary school to university level.

According to her, by integrating STEM education with career pathways, the academy uses AI-driven assessments and gamified learning to enhance the educational experience, aiming to develop tech-savvy, job-ready, and entrepreneurial leaders.

Recognising the diverse needs across the continent, she noted that WiFiCombat Academy tailors its solutions to regional requirements, offering mobile-first, cloud-based platforms, offline learning kits, and culturally relevant curricula.

These innovations, she pointed out, ensure access even in areas with limited internet connectivity. She added that through partnerships with local governments and NGOs, the academy provides e-learning tools, personalised learning through AI, and mobile applications that expand access to underserved regions.

Tejuoso, a Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellow, said the academy was exploring blockchain integration for credentialing and plans to enhance its offerings with immersive VR/AR modules for hands-on learning.

According to Tejuoso, by leveraging data analytics and learner feedback, WiFiCombat Academy continuously refines its platform to meet the evolving needs of students and educators.

“In evaluating technology tools, WiFiCombat Academy uses analytics, learner feedback, and outcome-based metrics,” added Tejuoso. “The academy continuously refines its platforms through pilot programs and collaboration with educators to ensure the solutions remain relevant and impactful.”

She noted that the role of AI and machine learning in transforming education cannot be overemphasised, as they offer personalised learning paths and predictive analytics to reduce dropout rates, bridge language barriers, and provide real-time feedback to both learners and educators.

She stressed the importance of collaboration between governments, international organisations, and the private sector to drive the growth of the Edtech ecosystem.

“Governments can invest in digital infrastructure, international organisations can offer funding and expertise, and the private sector can also foster innovation, mentorship, and internship opportunities to help scale impactful educational solutions across Africa,” Tejuoso explained.

Casio Computer Company Limited, Tokyo, Japan, has unveiled the three models of its scientific calculators that have received certification from the Nigerian Conformity Assessment Program (SONCAP), administered by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

In a statement, the Managing Director, Takashi Seimiya, explained that the significant achievement marks the first time Casio has been awarded the SONCAP certification for its products in Nigeria.

The certification, he said, applies to these scientific calculator models: FX-9910NGPLUS-2WDT, FX-991ESPLUS-2WDTV and FX-82MS-2-W-DH-F.

SONCAP, Nigeria’s import control system, was implemented on September 1, 2005, to ensure that only genuine and high-quality foreign products are introduced into the Nigerian market.

“This programme is vital in protecting consumers from counterfeit goods while promoting safety and quality standards,” he stated, adding that

Casio’s decision to apply for SONCAP certification was driven by the company’s commitment to supporting Mathematics education in Nigeria.

“Scientific calculators play a crucial role in the learning process, and Casio’s certified models have been specifically designed to meet the rigorous needs of Nigerian students and educators.

Among the certified models, Seimiya said the FX-9910NGPLUS stands out as an affordable, durable, and user-friendly scientific calculator with exceptional mathematical performance. “It has already earned the endorsement of the Lagos State curriculum service, with a recommendation sticker placed on the product packaging.”
