.Inaugurates three new naval ships and combined maritime task force for Gulf of Guinea

.Lauds Navy’s role in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations nationwide

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu on Monday vowed his government’s commitment towards strengthening Nigeria’s maritime security architecture with the inauguration of three new naval vessels – NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila, and NNS Gurara.

He also inaugurated a Combined Maritime Task Force for the Gulf of Guinea.

Speaking at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront in Lagos to mark the commencement of activities for the Platinum Jubilee of the Nigerian Navy, the President who flagged off the 2026 Navy International Fleet Review described the Navy’s 70th anniversary as a historic milestone that reflects the transformation of a modest maritime service into one of Africa’s most formidable naval forces.

Tinubu noted that the Nigerian Navy has evolved alongside the nation’s sovereignty, growing from its origins in 1956 into a modern and sophisticated force that serves as a critical pillar of national security, economic prosperity and regional stability.

He congratulated the service for attaining a position of continental leadership, highlighting that its emergence as a leading naval force in Africa underscores seven decades of operational excellence, professionalism and strategic growth.

As part of efforts to further enhance the Navy’s operational readiness, Tinubu inaugurated three newly acquired naval vessels, stating that the move reflects his administration’s unwavering commitment to the recapitalisation of the Nigerian Navy, promotion of indigenous shipbuilding capacity and provision of strategic support required for a responsive and capable maritime force.

The President said the impressive aerial combat displays and parade of naval assets by Nigeria and its foreign partners reflected the growing global recognition of the Nigerian Navy and its pivotal role in advancing maritime security within the Gulf of Guinea and beyond.

Lauding the Navy for safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain, Tinubu noted that the service had successfully eradicated piracy in Nigerian waters and significantly curtailed crude oil theft and related maritime crimes through enhanced surveillance, rapid response mechanisms and robust enforcement operations.

He said the achievements had not only improved the security of coastal communities but had also contributed to increased oil production and broader economic growth.

The President charged officers and ratings to sustain the high standards of professionalism, discipline and operational effectiveness that have distinguished the service, while continually adapting to emerging security threats.

Expressing confidence in the future of the Navy, Tinubu said the anniversary theme, “Seven Decades of Operational Excellence,” was not merely a slogan but a reflection of the institution’s enduring contributions to national development and security.

He further commended the Navy’s role in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations across the country, particularly the exploits of the Special Boat Service and the recent deployment of the Nigerian Navy Marines in operational theatres.

“The Nigerian Navy has become an indispensable pillar of both national and regional security,” the President stated.

Tinubu also inaugurated the Gulf of Guinea Combined Maritime Task Force, describing the initiative as a demonstration of the collective resolve of regional partners to strengthen multinational cooperation against piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing and other transnational maritime crimes.

The President also appreciated international partners for their support towards security efforts in the Gulf of Guinea, describing the Combined Maritime Task Force as a major step towards strengthening collective maritime governance and operational cooperation.

He specifically commended Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone for their pioneering contributions to the initiative, expressing optimism that deeper collaboration would further enhance safety, stability and prosperity across the region’s maritime domain.

Tinubu congratulated the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, officers, ratings, veterans, and families of Nigerian Navy personnel on this historic milestone, urging them to remain steadfast in their commitment to duty, patriotism, and service to the nation.

Earlier, Vice Admiral Abbas noted that the Navy’s successes in recent years were made possible by strategic investments, policy support, and strong leadership from the President. He highlighted that the acquisition of modern platforms, enhanced surveillance capabilities, and sustained collaboration among security agencies have significantly strengthened Nigeria’s maritime security architecture.

He added that these interventions have enabled the Nigerian Navy to intensify efforts against piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, sea robbery, and other transnational maritime crimes within the Gulf of Guinea.

Abbas reaffirmed the loyalty and commitment of officers and ratings to the Constitution and the President, pledging that the Service would remain vigilant and resolute in defending Nigeria’s maritime domain against all threats. He also commended the sacrifices of naval personnel, past and present, whose dedication has shaped the Nigerian Navy into a formidable force.

He assured Nigerians that the Service would continue to leverage technology, innovation, and strategic partnerships to secure the nation’s maritime environment and sustain the gains already made in combating maritime crime.

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday evening returned to the nation’s capital, Abuja from Luanda, Angola, after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 7th African Union–European Union (AU-EU) Summit held in that country.

The Vice President had on Sunday departed South Africa for Luanda after a successful outing at the 2025 Group of 20 (G20) Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, where he also represented the President.

In Angola, Shettima, according to a release issued by his Media Assistant, Stanley Nkwocha, delivered Tinubu’s statement in which he intensified the nation’s call for Africa to secure permanent seats with veto-wielding authority on the United Nations (UN) Security Council, insisting that comprehensive reform of the global governance system is long overdue.

The President, in his statement, also tasked the European Union (EU) with co-creating peace and security initiatives alongside its African partners, anchored on African-led frameworks as a pathway to achieving sustainable stability across the continent.

Tinubu reaffirmed the country’s firm commitment to advancing peace, security and democratic governance across Africa, and collaborating with the European Union to build a more stable, just, and prosperous world.

Earlier at the first session of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, the President urged world leaders to come up with a more equitable and responsive system to manage global financial flows and sincerely address the recurring debt crises in a manner that meets the needs of all nations.

In his speech delivered by Shettima on Saturday, President Tinubu noted that the multilateral frameworks, currently being relied on, no longer reflect the complexities of the present world, as they were “built in an era far removed from” the present challenges.

At the third session of the G20 Leaders’ Summit on Sunday, the President called for a global framework that benefits communities hosting critical minerals in Nigeria and Africa, ensuring value addition at the source.

He also backed the creation of global ethical standards for Artificial Intelligence (AI), aimed at accelerating development across the world.

Presidency: Jonathan Free to Run in 2027, Nigerians Won’t Forget He Ran Economy Aground /2025/09/30/presidency-jonathan-free-to-run-in-2027-nigerians-wont-forget-he-ran-economy-aground/ /2025/09/30/presidency-jonathan-free-to-run-in-2027-nigerians-wont-forget-he-ran-economy-aground/#comments Tue, 30 Sep 2025 04:01:42 +0000 /?p=1128789

•Says ex-leader engaged in frivolous spending, put country in dire straits

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

The presidency, yesterday, recognised the rights of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election, but noted that his tenure, apart from lacking any clear economic agenda, engaged in frivolous spending, ran the economy aground, and put the country in dire straits.

The presidency made the disclosure while reacting, for the first time, to comments by former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, that Jonathan would contest the 2027 presidential poll under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a release by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the presidency emphasised that Jonathan was welcome to square up to President Bola Tinubu at the 2027 presidential election.

It, however, advised Jonathan to be wary of PDP sugar-coated cheerleaders like Gana, who only wanted to lure him into the race to satisfy their personal, religious, ethnic and political interests.

Faulting Jonathan’s ambition, the presidency added that the Tinubu presidency, in the last 28 months, had been busy correcting the past misdeeds of the Jonathan government by resetting the economy, removing the ruinous fuel subsidy, and abolishing multiple exchange rates, which paved the way for arbitrage to flourish.

The presidency, in the 15-paragraph release stated, “As we begin the march towards the 2027 elections prematurely foisted on the nation by the desperation of the opposition ganging up against President Bola Tinubu despite his glaring giant economic strides, we are once again regaled with a cacophony of voices, most of them full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, to paraphrase inimitable Williams Shakespeare in one of his classic works, Macbeth.

“One recent statement that stands out in its absurdity is Professor Jerry Gana’s. The former Minister of Information and National Orientation, moving to draft former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2007 presidential race, affirmed that the former president would contest the coming election on the platform of the discredited Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which bequeathed a legacy of economic ruins, after 16 years of bad governance.

“Gana even deluded himself, asserting that the former President would defeat President Tinubu to reclaim power after 12 years. Prof. Gana of the defunct MAMSER fame is free to delude himself and engage in his usual comedy. After all, Jonathan’s entering the race would provide another job for the Niger State-born former university don.”

It added, “However, we should caution former President Jonathan to be wary of the PDP sugar-coated cheerleaders. Politicians of Jerry Gana’s ilk merely want to lure him into the race to satisfy their personal, political, religious, and ethnic interests. They will abandon him midstream, as they did in 2015, and leave Gentleman Jonathan in the lurch.

“Don’t get us wrong: President Jonathan reserves the right to run if he wishes. It is his inalienable right to contest the presidency again. President Tinubu will wholeheartedly welcome him if he decides to enter the race.

“But Jonathan will have his date in the court of the land. Indeed, the jury will determine whether Jonathan, who was sworn in twice as president, satisfies the constitutional requirements and is eligible to contest the presidency and be sworn in, if successful, for a third term in office.”

The statement said, “Shorn of all those selfish considerations for which some PDP big guns find his candidacy appealing, President Jonathan will also have his encounter with the people as to whether he has anything new to offer after his disastrous six years, for which they voted him out in 2015.

“Let us remind ourselves about Jonathan’s record. We cannot forget in a hurry how his regime, devoid of any clear economic agenda, engaged in frivolous spending, ran the economy aground and put the country in dire straits.

“The nation’s economic downturn, which President Tinubu is working very hard to overcome, actually began under President Jonathan. The Jonathan administration severely damaged the economy, and all key indicators declined under his watch.

“Under him, the so-called business moguls allocated foreign exchange to import fuel, simply pocketing the dollars without importing anything. Some of those big men still have court cases on the issue today.”

The presidency also alleged, “Jonathan and his National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), freely distributed security funds to friends and cronies. In 2010, President Jonathan inherited a total of $66 billion, of which $46 billion was in foreign reserves and $20 billion in the noble-but-abused Excess Crude Account.

“By 2015, when the people democratically removed him from office, the foreign reserves had fallen below $30 billion, and the Excess Crude Account had been depleted to $2 billion, despite generating record revenue from crude oil sales that the country had never achieved in more than 25 years combined.

“It is on record that between 2010 and 2013, crude oil sold for an average of $100 per barrel. By December 2014, however, the Jonathan-led Federal Government could no longer pay salaries to Federal Civil Servants. At least 28 states across the country owed workers huge salary arrears.

“In contrast, President Tinubu has taken bold decisions over the last 28 months to reset the economy, removing the ruinous fuel subsidy and abolishing multiple exchange rates, which paved the way for arbitrage to flourish. The President has stabilised the economy in slightly over two years in office.”

The presidency said, “In 2025 Q2, the Gross Domestic Product grew by 4.23 per cent, the highest in four years, outpacing the 3.4 per cent projected by the International Monetary Fund.  Inflation decreased to 20.12 per cent in August 2025, the lowest level in three years.

“The foreign reserves stand presently at $42. 03 billion. The Naira has virtually stabilised. Investor confidence in our economy has been restored, and investors are betting on Nigeria.

“In plain language, the nation has turned the corner. And our people have started reaping the gains of the bold reforms instituted by the Tinubu administration. Road infrastructure is being boosted.

“Old roads are being reconstructed while new ones, like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Highway, among others, are springing up. The government is addressing security issues in some parts of the country.

“We can go on and on, reeling out the many macroeconomic gains of the Tinubu administration. However, the point is that the PDP and Jerry Gana’s co-travellers broke the economy; President Tinubu is fixing it.

“President Jonathan and others are welcome to the 2027 race. They broke the economy before, but millions of Nigerians, who will not easily forget the recent past, will not allow them to return and run it down again.”

•Vows to align with models of successful economies, like Brazil
•Tasks diaspora Nigerians with nation-building, promises renewed prosperity
•House Speaker: President’s meeting with Nigerian community in Brazil moment of great historical importance
•Tinubu departs Brazil for Abuja

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has promised to fast-track Nigeria’s development through technology and food security, aligning with the success models of emerging economies, like Brazil.

Speaking during a meeting in Brasilia with a cross-section of Nigerians resident in Brazil, Tinubu emphasised his administration’s commitment to transformation through innovation, reform, and inclusive growth.

”We must bring Nigeria to the forefront of Africa’s progress, driven by technology, food sovereignty, and the courage to change our destiny,” Tinubu declared, before departing the Brazilian capital en route Abuja following his three-day state visit.

He commended the vibrant Nigerian diaspora community, and urged them to see themselves as key stakeholders in the building of a new Nigeria rooted in innovation, culture, and shared responsibility.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, described the meeting between Tinubu and the Nigerian diaspora in Brazil as a moment of great historical significance, marking a new chapter in Nigeria’s engagement with its global community.

The president described his visit to Brazil as a strategic move to deepen bilateral ties and draw inspiration from the impressive development trajectory of the South American country. He stated that both nations once shared similar economic starting points.

According to him, “Once upon a time, Nigeria and Brazil stood on the same level. Look at Brazil today, its technology, its food systems. We must ask ourselves: what do they have that we don’t?

“We have the brains, the energy, and the youth. We have everything we need. Now, we must act.”

He told the Nigerian diaspora community, “You are the pride of our nation. Your diversity, your commitment — it reflects the Nigeria we are working to build. I salute you all.”

He acknowledged the difficulties citizens faced due to ongoing economic reforms, insisting that they are essential steps towards long-term stability and prosperity.

“Yes, the reforms are tough, like bitter medicine. But once the fever is gone, you know the cure was worth it,” the president stated.
Referencing his recent diplomatic shuttles, Tinubu said his government was laying the groundwork for global partnerships that could unlock Nigeria’s potential in manufacturing, technology, and cultural exchange.

He canvassed support for an upcoming voyage involving Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, inspired by a cultural initiative he began while serving as Lagos State governor.

“If Wole Soyinka, at over 90, can still dream and act, then we have no excuse. The dream must be realised. The time is now,” Tinubu declared.
He appealed passionately to Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to foster unity, peace, and passion for developing a Nigeria that everybody would truly be proud to call home.

Responding to questions from Nigerians living in Brazil about opening consulates in SĂŁo Paulo and other cities, Tinubu urged patience. He explained that the government was meticulously managing limited resources to keep foreign missions running efficiently.

Equally speaking, Abbas stressed that the meeting between Tinubu and the Nigerian diaspora in Brazil marked a moment of great historical significance.
He acknowledged the deep-rooted historical ties between Nigeria and Brazil, saying they are ties forged through centuries of migration and cultural exchange. He emphasised the need to rekindle those bonds.

The speaker also lauded Tinubu’s effort to strengthen bilateral ties with Brazil, stating that recent diplomatic and cultural initiatives have laid the groundwork for future collaborations between the two nations.

On his part, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, who spoke on behalf of the governors on Tinubu’s delegation, praised the economic policies of the administration as transformational.

Sani said, “In the past, it was almost impossible to convince any investor to come to Nigeria, but just last year, Mr. President cleared a $7 billion forex backlog, a major intervention.”

According to the governor, Nigeria now offers an environment where investors can bring in capital and repatriate profits without facing unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles or foreign exchange crisis.

He credited the elimination of multiple exchange rates and improved transparency in the financial system as key factors encouraging investor confidence.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, urged Nigerians residing in SĂŁo Paulo and surrounding areas to continue utilising the existing liaison office until necessary upgrades were implemented.

Earlier, Chairman of the Brazilian chapter of Nigerians in Diaspora, Chuka Emmanuel, commended the president for fostering stronger ties between Nigeria and Brazil. Emmanuel pledged the diaspora’s support for national development.

He emphasised the diaspora’s role as a development partner, highlighting the rise in Nigerian postgraduate scholars in Brazil.

Emmanuel stated, “What we’re saying is that here, through the diaspora, we would like to be a channel to this national development.

“In that regard, we have started; we have actually been doing that for quite some time now in the area of agriculture, infrastructure, and, of course, looking for direct investment back home.

“To be able to do that, I’ve also recognised, Your Excellency, Sir, that human resources in terms of education is what we strongly need to be able to prepare the younger ones for tomorrow so that they can return home and participate.

”What I have done, Your Excellency, is that in the past one and a half years since after my election, we have had three PhD students at that time. And right now, in one and a half years, we have 296 here in Brazil. And all on scholarships.”

The meeting, anchored by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri, was also attended by top government officials, including Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, as well as Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

Tinubu Empowers ICRC To Implement Approval Thresholds For PPP Projects. /2025/06/29/tinubu-empowers-icrc-to-implement-approval-thresholds-for-ppp-projects/ /2025/06/29/tinubu-empowers-icrc-to-implement-approval-thresholds-for-ppp-projects/#respond Sun, 29 Jun 2025 18:16:43 +0000 /?p=1097872

* MDAs can now approve PPP projects below N20bn, subject to ICRC guidelines and certification

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has empowered the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) to implement a more efficient and better streamlined Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project delivery process by approving PPP thresholds for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Until now, all PPP projects, regardless of size, were subjected to Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval, resulting in extended processes and limiting the participation of MDAs with small and mid-scale projects.

The new policy decentralises the approval process, allowing MDAs to approve projects below specified thresholds under the ICRC guideline, thereby supporting all scales of projects and encouraging broader private sector investment in PPPs.

At the just-concluded Nigeria PPP Summit 2025, President Tinubu declared that his administration was strengthening the ICRC as the “engine room of Nigeria’s infrastructure revolution”, noting that PPPs would be pivotal in driving transformative development across the country.

The Director General of the ICRC, Dr Jobson Oseodion Ewalefoh, who disclosed the presidential approval, in a statement issued on Sunday, said: “Under the new directive, PPP projects valued below N10 billion for parastatals/agencies and N20 billion for ministries will now be approved by respective Project Approval Boards (PABs) that will be constituted under ICRC guidelines and regulations. Only projects exceeding these thresholds—or those involving multiple ministries and requiring inter-agency coordination—will require FEC approval.

“Importantly, all such projects must be entirely privately funded, with no government guarantees or financial commitments from the treasury.

“Notwithstanding the new thresholds, every PPP project must be submitted to the ICRC for review and certification. The ICRC must issue certificates of compliance before the PAB and other approving bodies can approve any PPP project.”

Ewalefoh explained that this framework marks a shift from the previously adopted one-size-fits-all approach to a more dynamic and scale-sensitive model that will unlock low-value but high-impact projects.

“This approval is a game-changer, especially for sectors like health, education, agriculture, and housing. We expect to see private sector-led investments in projects like rural diagnostic medical centres, construction of classroom blocks, student hostels and delivery of affordable housing schemes across the country, with fewer bureaucratic requirements under the newly adopted process,” he added.

The ICRC DG emphasised that the new framework aligns with President Tinubu’s broader public procurement reforms, ensuring harmony across the government’s financial and investment systems.

“By decentralising approvals, the government is supporting and unlocking investment opportunities through improved capital inflows, job creation and faster project delivery—exactly what we need in this current economic climate,” he said.

Ewalefoh further stated that the ICRC will continue to promote, guide, facilitate and regulate the PPP ecosystem in the country, while collaborating with other agencies in the infrastructure ecosystem including the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) among others.

He enjoined MDAs as project owners and grantors to take advantage of the approved threshold and the new guidelines that will be issued by the commission.

MDAs are encouraged to embrace the utilisation of PPPs for the delivery of critical infrastructure in delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda of the president.

*Dangote: Africa can rise through value addition to raw materials, says lack of electricity, policy summersault hampering industrialisation

*Elumelu attests to improvement in investment climate across continent, urges businesses to honour loan obligations

Deji Elumoye and James Emejo in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu, yesterday conferred Nigeria’s second highest national honour – Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), on the President/Chairman, African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), Prof. Benedict Oramah.

The president honoured the Afreximbank’s boss at the 2025 Annual Meetings of Afreximbank, with the theme, “Building the Future on Decades of Resilience”, in Abuja.

Tinubu said the award was in recognition of a “decade of transformative leadership by Prof. Oramah, who has steered Afreximbank into becoming Africa’s foremost trade and development institution”.

He said Afreximbank, under Oramah’s steadfast leadership, grew its assets from $5 billion to over $37 billion, adding his decade of leadership saw the bank champion Africa’s pandemic response, drove industrialisation, and supported the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement as well as the continent’s creative economy.

The president further rallied African nations to united in their commitment to the continent’s development and prosperity amid rising protectionism and shifting trade dynamics, stressing that,”it’s more important than ever that we stand together”.

However, Tinubu said Oramah’s legacy remained one of generational impact.

He noted that 32 years ago, Afreximbank was born from Africa’s resolve to own its development, pointing out that over $250 billion had been mobilised for trade and development—$140 billion in the last decade alone.

Tinubu said the development finance bank had become a pillar of African progress.

The president further acknowledged that Nigeria had proudly benefited from over $52 billion in support, directed into energy, agriculture, infrastructure, manufacturing, healthcare, and creative industries.

He noted that flagship projects such as the Dangote and BUA Refineries, the African Medical Centre of Excellence, and the Africa Quality Assurance Centre embodied confidence in Nigeria’s future and Africa’s potential, stressing that partnership with the bank extended beyond capital.

The president said Nigeria’s collaboration with Afreximbank is expanding in both scope and ambition.

He said in conjunction with the bank, the federal government will be launching the Africa Energy Bank, headquartered in Abuja, with $5 billion in initial capital to finance Africa’s energy transition—leveraging gas, renewables, and clean technologies.

Tinubu said, “We are scaling our fertiliser sector to 7.5 million tonnes annually, supported by Afreximbank, positioning Nigeria as Africa’s fertiliser hub and ensuring food security for the continent.

“Meanwhile, transformative projects such as the $3.5 billion Bakassi Deep Seaport enhance trade infrastructure and market access.”

Tinubu also urged all African nations to embrace the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), which was formally launched by Afreximbank, noting that the payment platform would deepen financial integration and strengthens our collective resilience.

He added that Nigeria’s formal approval of PAPSS was a significant step towards financial independence.

He said PAPSS enables cross-border trade in local currencies, reducing reliance on foreign exchange and promoting economic stability.

Tinubu said, “Let us fully adopt PAPSS to reduce costs, conserve foreign reserves, and empower SMEs. Let us strengthen financial support to Afreximbank to scale its transformational impact.

“Let us treat intra-African trade not as a goal but as a strategic pathway for growth, jobs, and industrial value chains.

“Let us empower youth, women, and entrepreneurs as beneficiaries and architects of a new African century. The world will not wait for Africa; a united and purposeful Africa can define its destiny.

“In the face of rising protectionism and shifting trade dynamics, it’s more important than ever that we stand together, united in our commitment to Africa’s development and prosperity.”

Furthermore, Tinubu noted that since May 2023, under the Renewed Hope agenda, his administration had advanced tough but necessary reforms rooted in macroeconomic stability, inclusive growth, and restored productivity.

He said, “We removed the long-standing fuel subsidy and unified our exchange rate system. These reforms, though difficult, were essential to correcting systemic distortions.

“The results of our efforts are clear and promising, providing a strong foundation for our future endeavours. We have made significant strides in various sectors, and these achievements should fill us all with optimism for what lies ahead.

“In 2024, Nigeria recorded 3.4 per cent GDP growth with broad sectoral contributions. Oil production rebounded to 1.5 million barrels per day with a 2.5 million target in view, supported by strategic investment deals like the $1.2 billion CNCEC agreement.

Continuing, he said, “Inflation is easing, the naira is stabilising, investor confidence is recovering, and debt servicing has declined from 96 per cent to below 65 per cent of revenue. Tax reform is also underway, with the passage of four tax bills by the National Assembly, which I signed into law a few days ago.

“Numbers alone do not capture our progress. Fundamental transformation lies in empowered citizens and thriving enterprises. Over 100,000 Nigerians have accessed our new national consumer credit scheme, with 400,000 more queued for the next phase. Our landmark student loan programme ensures no child is denied higher education due to financial hardship.

“We have spent N45.9 billion in healthcare to upgrade 8,800 primary health centres, improving maternal care and diagnostics in neglected communities. We are deploying thousands of fibre-optic cables for digital inclusion to bridge connectivity gaps and power innovation.

“Over 279 roads have been completed on infrastructure, with 65 under construction and 260 rural road interventions executed. Major arteries like the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway and the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano Road are reshaping national logistics and regional integration.”

The president added that through platforms like FEDA, AQAC, CANEX, and PAPSS, our “partnership with Afreximbank is not just about financing. It’s about fostering African entrepreneurship, elevating quality standards, and scaling SMEs in creative and export-driven industries.

“Afreximbank is a strategic partner in co-creating the institutions, infrastructure, and innovations that will define Africa’s economic future.

“As the world becomes increasingly fragmented—with rising protectionism and shifting trade dynamics—Africa must double down on its institutions and capabilities.

“Afreximbank, backed by committed member states, must remain agile, bold, and grounded in African realities.”

Speaking earlier during one of the panel sessions, President/Chief Executive, Dangote Group, Mr. Aliko Dangote, said the path to the continent’s growth was to process its mineral resources before exporting to other countries.

He said Africa must do everything to discourage dumping as well as launch an Africa First initiative to boost job creation.

Dangote also said African governments should stop looking for foreign investor but rather support local businesses by providing the enabling environment for them to thrive and succeed.

He said only the successes of local entrepreneurs will incentivise foreign investors to invest in the continent.

He said lack of electricity and inconsistent government policies were bane of industrialisation and growth in the continent.

He said Nigeria has become the largest cement exporter in Africa, adding the country will earn over $500 million annually from the commodity export when investments are completed in the sector.

Dangote also acknowledge that if not for Afreximbank’s financing support, the Dangote Refinery wouldn’t have been completed.

He argued that domestic investors have the obligation to develop Africa and not foreign investors, who don’t come by easily.

He said development finance instructions like Afreximbank needed to be supported to make impact in Africa.

He lamented that while proceeds of corruption were invested back into the country in other climes including Indonesia, corruption proceeds are often stashed away in foreign countries by African leaders and not used to develop the continent.

He said this was the major difference between corruption in Africa and the rest of the world.

Also, speaking at the Afreximbank meeting, Founder/Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Mr. Tony Elumelu, however, said that though challenges persist, the investment and regulatory climate across Africa had improved compared to five years ago.

He highlighted the need to support development finance instructions like Afreximbank to grow the continent.

Elumelu also attested to the fact that Afreximbank’s support in 2020 helped Heirs Energies to acquire one of its oil wells, noting that if not for the bank’s intervention, it would have been impossible to take control of OML 11.

He also appealed to businesses that benefit from the bank’s funding not to burn their bridges but honour their obligations to Afrexim.

Elumelu stressed that for Africa to rise again, there was need for solid financial institutions to support the aspirations of businesses.

He pointed out that for holistic development, there must be improved access to electricity, while interventions for youths should be prioritised.

Ganduje’s Push, Rivers Reconciliation Signal Tinubu’s Emerging Strategy for 2027 Presidential Race /2025/06/28/gandujes-push-rivers-reconciliation-signal-tinubus-emerging-strategy-for-2027-presidential-race/ /2025/06/28/gandujes-push-rivers-reconciliation-signal-tinubus-emerging-strategy-for-2027-presidential-race/#comments Sat, 28 Jun 2025 04:24:11 +0000 /?p=1097483

*Chairman’s exit paves way for Kwankwaso’s imminent return to APC, as analysts see a Kano, Rivers, Lagos move

*Vice presidency now in play

Deji Elumoye, Chuks Okocha, Adedayo Akinwale in Abuja and Blessing Ibunge in Port Harcourt

President Bola Tinubu may be quietly setting the stage for the 2027 presidential race, as recent political moves, including yesterday’s resignation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, and Thursday’s dramatic reconciliation between Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, all pointing to a calculated realignment of forces across Nigeria’s key voting blocs.

Political analysts believe the unfolding events are part of the President’s broader strategy to consolidate his influence in Kano, Rivers, and Lagos—three politically strategic States that hold the power to tilt national elections.

Ganduje’s exit was widely seen as a deliberate gesture to smoothen the path for the return of former Kano Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to the APC, potentially neutralising northern opposition and strengthening Tinubu’s 2027 base.

With Wike and Fubara seemingly sheathing their swords under Tinubu’s watch, the reconciliation also signals Tinubu’s intent to control the political narrative in the South-south. Combined with Lagos, his traditional stronghold, and a potentially united Kano front, insiders say Tinubu is stitching together a formidable tri-regional alliance that could give him a decisive edge in 2027.

Tinubu yesterday directed the APC’s Deputy National Chairman (North), Hon. Ali Dalori, to assume the position of Acting National Chairman, following Ganduje’s sudden resignation.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka in a statement, explained that Dalori would be acting pending the meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to be summoned immediately to fill the vacancy created by the resignation.

He said: “The APC wishes to announce the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as the National Chairman of our great Party. His resignation, which is effective immediately, was offered to enable him attend to urgent and important personal matters.

“In his letter of resignation addressed to the National Working Committee (NWC) through the National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, Dr. Ganduje expressed gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the opportunity to serve the Party at the highest level.
“The President has directed the Deputy National Chairman (North), Hon. Ali Bukar Dalori, to assume the position of Acting National Chairman, pending the meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to be summoned immediately to fill the vacancy created by the resignation.”

Morka recalled that Ganduje assumed leadership of the party in August 2023, following the resignation of his predecessor, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

He said throughout his tenure, he dedicated himself to strengthening party unity and cohesion, expounding its democratic ideals, and enhancing the party’s electoral competitiveness.

Morka noted that the confidence placed in him by the party’s NEC and National Caucus meetings in February 2025, was a profound recognition and honour for his service.

He added that he left his position as National Chairman with great pride in collective achievements, including successful defections from opposition parties and legal affirmations of our Party leadership’s legitimacy.

Morka assured all party faithful that the party remains steadfast and unwavering in its mission to deliver transformative governance for all Nigerians, in line with President Tinubu’s renewed Hope Agenda.
However, there was disquiet in the party earlier yesterday, following Ganduje’s surprise resignation.

His sudden resignation threw the party into confusion as staff and party members were seen discussing the development in hushed tones.
Some party officials who pleaded to remain anonymous had told ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ earlier yesterday that resignation had more to do with mounting internal pressure and political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, analysts argued that the development paves the way for Kwankwaso’s imminent return to the ruling party and the re-zoning of the vice presidential ticket.

According to analysts, with the unfolding developments, the position of the vice president could either go North-west or North-east, depending on how they choose the next Chairman of the APC.

If the Chairman goes to North-central, then it puts the North-west in a position to get the vice presidency, competing directly with the North-east. However, if they decide to take the Chairmanship in the North-east, it puts North-central in a pole-position for the vice presidency, where the APC can pick a Christian, competing directly with the North-west, an analyst explained yesterday.

Ganduje’s unceremonious exit made him the sixth chairman of the party since its formation in 2013.
The former Governor of Osun state, Chief Bisi Akande was the first chairman, while the former Governor of Edo State, John Odige Oyegun was elected after Akande stepped down after the party defeated former President Goodluck Jonathan.

After spending four years, Oyegun was not allowed to return and was replaced by former Adams Oshiomhole. He soon ran into trouble with Governors of the party and he was also shown the way out.
In his place, a Caretaker committee, chaired by the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, was set up.

After party stakeholders got tired of Buni’s sit-tight attitude, he was forced to organize a national convention which led to the emergency of Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

After Tinubu won the election, it was clear that Adamu’s days were numbered considering the role he played to thwart Tinubu’s emergence as the party’s candidate. Adamu was replaced by Ganduje.

For Rivers, the President hosted the reconciliation meeting on Thursday night, at the presidential villa in Abuja, bringing together all the figures in the Rivers State political crisis in the closed-door meeting.

On March 18, this year, Tinubu had declared a State of Emergency in Rivers, following the unending political crisis in the State and suspended Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu and all the State House of Assembly members.

After the meeting, Fubara expressed belief that there was a positive move for lasting peace in the state.

Fubara, who is in his third month of suspension, promised to do everything within his power to ensure that the peace is sustained.
“For me it is very important that this day has come. What we need is for the progress and peace of Rivers State. By the special grace of God, this night (Thursday), with the help of Mr President and in agreement with the leaders of the state, peace has returned to Rivers State. We will do everything within our power to maintain peace and make sure we sustain it this time around”, Fubara assured.

On his part, the FCT Minister said their differences have been settled and that all parties are ready to work together.

“We were there with the governor and he agreed to work with all of us, we are members of the same political party. Yes, we are human, we have time for disagreement and then also have time to settle the disagreement.

“We have come to report to the President that this is what we have agreed. For me, everything is over and I enjoined everybody who believed, to work with us to also work together, that there is no more acrimony. For me, it is a day to thank the Almighty God”, Wike added.
The former Governor of Rivers State also confirmed that all parties involved in the political crisis have reached a consensus to work collaboratively with Fubara.

Wike while highlighting the importance of unity within the state’s political family also acknowledged that disagreements comparing them to those between normal relationships, but emphasised that now is the moment to settle these disputes.

According to him: “We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us. We are members of the same political family.

“Yes, just like humans, you have a disagreement, and then you also have a time to also settle your disagreement. And that has been finally concluded today, and we have come to report to Mr. President, that is what we have agreed so for me, everything is over. And enjoy all everybody who believe to work with us, to also work together with everybody that there’s no more acrimony. There’s nothing to say.”
Thursday night peace talks at the Villa, apart from bringing together Wike and Fubara also had in attendance suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Martins Amaewhule, and Majority Leader, Hon Major Jack.

Also present were state party chairmen of both the APC and the PDP, former governorship candidate, Senator Magnus Abe, Rivers federal lawmakers and too government officials.

Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail the reconciliation as stakeholders in Rivers State said it would bring lasting peace in the State.

In an interview with ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ, the State Chairman of the APC, Chief Tony Okocha, said no induced condition was made, adding that peace has finally returned in the state.

“Peace has returned to Rivers State, nobody was under duress. The President didn’t invite us; we invited the president. Peace has been made before, then we felt that we should concretize issues in the presence of Mr. President and he was kind enough to receive us,” he added.

Also reacting, a Chieftain of APC in the state, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka, believed that the reconciliation meeting did not include the governor’s supporters, expressing regret that the President acted out of the Constitution.

He questioned the reason for declaration of state of emergency in the state and subsequent suspension of democratic government, even when the state is peaceful. He added that the decision from the meeting could not be in the interest of Rivers State.

“Whatever they may have decided cannot be for the interest of the people of Rivers State. There was no reason for anybody to declare a state of emergency in a peaceful State. So, Tinubu declared the emergency rule for his own selfish interest and not when wants any peace in Rivers State.

“From the photos we saw online after the meeting, is an indication that it was a one-sided agreement. Tinubu has been in support of whatever Wike is doing in Rivers State and he gave him every power to do what he is doing. And that is why you could see that it was only Fubara that was from his own side, Wike brought his own people to the meeting.
“It is left for Rivers State people to decide whether the type of embarrassment that Tinubu and Wike gave to them is okay by them and they have to pass that judgment by 2027.”

A right activist, Mr. Enefaa Georgewill, said the reconciliation will not stand in the interest of the people in the State, stressing that it would only de-escalate the noise from the state in the media space.

Georgewill who is the Chairman of Rivers State Civil Society Organisations, continued that emergency rule “was not based on insecurity, but just about politics and economic interest, where the President chose to rule Rivers State through the back door and that is why the President was in a hurry, in a state where there is no war, no fighting, no death, declared a state of emergency and sacked a democratic government”.

However, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described the deal as shambolic, insisting that it was a proof that the reason Tinubu declared State of Emergency in Rivers State was not real, but a farce and politically motivated.

Weighing in on the reconciliation in a statement by his media aide, Paul Ibeh, Atiku asked, ”What manner of shambolic deal is this over the President Bola Tinubu’s planned reinstatement of Siminalayi Fubara as Rivers State Governor?”

He further said, ”First off, it is a confirmation that Fubara’s suspension by Tinubu on the grounds of insecurity was a farce and that, indeed, the suspension was politically motivated. Recall that since the suspension of Fubara, about 400 persons, including the 200 in Yelewata, have been massacred in Benue without a declaration of a state of emergency in the North Central state.

”Secondly, it is a confirmation that the suspension was linked to Wike’s failed bid to control the resources of Rivers.

”Thirdly, it is a confirmation of Tinubu’s gambit to have his ruling APC control the oil-rich state.

”Fourthly, it is an abridgement of the rights of Governor Fubara and the usurpation of the mandate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the people of Rivers to determine whether Fubara is worthy of a second term or not. Instead, what we are witnessing is Tinubu constituting a caucus to determine the process and outcome of what is supposed to be the exclusive preserve of the good people of Rivers State.”, Atiku stated,

Commending on efforts of the President in effecting the reconciliation, Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesperson to Atiku, praised Tinubu.
Reacting through his post on his X account, Sowunmi also thanked Fubara, Wike and Rivers elders for encouraging the intervention of President Tinubu in ending the crisis in their state. He wrote, “This is how to lead! A leader must resolve issues, not make them worse. There is nothing wrong with studying Asiwaju @officialABAT. After all, we study leaders in other climes. It is a weakness and colonial mentality to think that one of our own cannot be learned. Mr. President, you do this one.
“Thank you Gov @SimFubaraKSC, thank you, Min @GovWike, thank you Speaker and his colleagues. Thank you reasonable elders who encouraged this. This has always been my position. The journey from home is the same distance as the journey away from home. Team Rivers is Back. Now let’s celebrate. Never again!!!!”

However Former National Legal Adviser of the PDP, Mark Jacob, said he would not be surprised if Fubara joins the APC after the truce by Tinubu, adding that if they dangle any carrot that would enable him reclaim his mandate, he would go for it

Jacob stated this when he appeared on a television programme monitored in Abuja.

Reacting to the meeting and citing the recent gale of defections to the APC, the ex-PDP legal adviser said it would not be surprising to see Fubara who is a member of the PDP join the ruling party.

According to the former PDP National Legal Adviser, “So if they dangle a carrot to Siminalayi and tell him to come over to APC so that he can reclaim his seat, I will not be shocked if he agrees, because it’s all about me. ‘What will I gain,”

Wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has hosted visiting African First Ladies on the sideline of the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Afreximbank.
She applauded the potential of arts to strengthen the bond of unity on the continent.

The First Lady spoke yesterday at the Spouses Programme hosted at the Nike Art Gallery in Abuja.

At the event which featured dance, fashion show and art exhibition, Mrs. Tinubu said the nation-s diverse culture, tribe and tradition is one of its many strengths.
She expressed her pride to show her guests, including the First Ladies of Malawi and Gabon, Wife of the Vice President of Tanzania and representative of Egypt around one of Africa’s foremost art galleries, Nike Art Gallery.

Mrs. Tinubu also led them on an excursion around Nigerian designer stalls to sightsee and shop.

Though relaxed, the crux of the reception is not so far removed from the main agenda of the Afreximbank Annual Meeting.

Beyond making deals and charting a new way forward for Africa’s economic prosperity, the ongoing Afreximbank Annual Meeting in Abuja also highlights a convergence of culture and commerce.

Tinubu Launches 2,000 Tractors to Drive Agricultural Revolution /2025/06/24/tinubu-launches-2000-tractors-to-drive-agricultural-revolution/ /2025/06/24/tinubu-launches-2000-tractors-to-drive-agricultural-revolution/#respond Tue, 24 Jun 2025 03:36:23 +0000 /?p=1096043

•Inaugurates 15km road in Kwali area council

•Says rural connectivity necessary to drive national growth, prosperity

Deji Elumoyein Abuja

President Bola Tinubu says Nigeria’s agricultural renaissance has begun, as he launched 2,000 tractors for nationwide deployment under his Renewed Hope Agricultural MechanisationProgramme.

The inauguration ceremony yesterday in Abuja marked the programme’s formal take-off.

Likewise, yesterday, while inaugurating the 15-kilometre A2–Pai Town Road in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) at a separate ceremony, Tinubu declared that “infrastructure means nothing if it is not developed for the benefit of the people”.

The president stressed the importance of rural connectivity in driving national growth and prosperity.

However, during the inauguration of the tractors, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s agriculture sector by modernising farming practices and ensuring national food security.

He described the initiative as a landmark moment in his administration’s food security agenda and a crucial part of efforts to empower farmers and stimulate rural development.

Tinubu stated, “We are very proud of what we are doing. We made a promise when we came in. We are fulfilling that promise.

“Two years ago, I sounded the alarm on our nation’s food security crisis. I demanded immediate and innovative solutions. That, again, is answered today—this is the first phase of it.

“This government recognises that agricultural productivity is synonymous with national stability and food sovereignty. The ability to nourish our population forms the bedrock of a prosperous nation. Our ambition extends beyond mere self-sufficiency.

“We envision Nigeria as a global agricultural powerhouse—supplying quality produce to international markets while ensuring every citizen can access affordable, nutritious food.

“That’s why we took a bold decision to establish this new agricultural mechanisationprogramme. We are just beginning.”

Tinubu disclosed that the 2,000 tractors and accompanying implements would be distributed nationwide through a service-provider model to support smallholder farmers with access to modern equipment, reduce manual labour, and increase yields.

He said, “We must seize this opportunity to achieve agricultural independence. Nigeria has the land, the people, and the tools. Let history recall this day as the beginning of Nigeria’s agricultural renaissance—where modern technology met our farmers’ legendary resilience to usher in greater prosperity.”

The president acknowledged the contributions of international partners, especially the Republic of Belarus, which played a key role in procuring the equipment, transferring technology, and providing training support for Nigerians.

“We have friends across the world. We have Belarus committed to a programme that will empower our youth—teach them how to do things, get them off the streets, and empower them in technology, machinery, and fabrication,” he said.

Tinubu paid special tribute to Alex Sigman, a Belarusian businessman and former classmate at the University of Chicago, for facilitating the collaboration.

He said, “Alex was my very good neighbour and schoolmate in Chicago. Never did we dream that I would become President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Alex, a successful businessman from Belarus—working together to promote the prosperity of our two countries.

“I believe our university will be very proud that we are doing this here today.”

The president commended the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for its proactive leadership in rolling out the programme and called for strict stakeholder accountability.

“To all stakeholders receiving this equipment, deploy it with maximum efficiency. We will work with you, supervise you, and hold you accountable,” he stated.

Tinubu urged Nigerians to take ownership of the agricultural transformation drive and contribute actively to achieving food sovereignty.

Earlier, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, AbubakarKyari, recalled that on July 13, 2023, Tinubu had declared a state of emergency on food security and issued a presidential directive for urgent and innovative solutions.

Kyari stated that mechanisation was placed at the core of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The minister outlined four key initiatives launched under the Tinubu administration’s mechanisation policy, including the John Deere TractorisationProgramme, Greener Hope Project, Green Imperative Programme, and the newly launched 2,000 tractors procured from Belarus.

According to him, the Belarus project, implemented in collaboration with AfTrade DMCC and supported by the Republic of Belarus, delivered 2,000 high-quality tractors, 10 combine harvesters, 12 mobile workshops, 9,000 implements, and 9,000 spare part kits.

Kyari said, “Never in Nigeria’s history have we witnessed an agricultural mechanisation initiative of this scale, ambition, and national focus.

“We are today unveiling the single largest mechanisation drive ever undertaken in our country.”

He added that the programme was expected to cultivate over 550,000 hectares of farmland, produce more than two million metric tons of staple food, create over 16,000 jobs, and directly benefit over 550,000 farming households.

Other programme components include mandatory operator training, GPS-enabled tracking for accountability, a structured repayment model, and pro bono equipment allocations to research and training institutions.

He further stated that the initiative would engage Nigeria’s youth through new roles in equipment handling, maintenance, logistics, extension services, and agri-tech innovation.

Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus, Viktor Karenkevich, congratulated the Nigerian leader and the people of Nigeria for initiating a strategic and timely intervention to strengthen national food security.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of Belarus’s President, Alexander Lukashenko, Karenkevich described Tinubu’s choice of Belarus as a trusted partner in the supply of agricultural machinery as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two countries.

He stated that Belarusian equipment was known for quality, affordability, and durability and was present in over 100 countries worldwide.

Karankevich recalled that both nations signed a roadmap agreement during the 2024 Belagro Exhibition in Minsk, setting the foundation for joint agricultural mechanisation efforts.

He said, “Today, Belarusian machinery begins to serve the people of Nigeria. This marks the first phase of a landmark bilateral project that has already elevated our cooperation to a new level.”

The Belarus deputy prime minister confirmed his country’s readiness to move into the second and third phases of the programme.

He said the phases included establishing service and maintenance centres for Belarusian machinery in Nigeria, setting up local assembly plants for agricultural equipment, constructing grain storage complexes, and training Nigerians to operate and maintain advanced farming machinery.

He said, “Agricultural mechanisation is just one example of our cooperation.

“It confirms the immense potential of Belarus–Nigeria relations, grounded in friendship, equality, mutual respect, and trust.”

The deputy prime minister echoed the words of Lukashenko on Belarus’ approach to Africa, saying, “We come to Africa as friends. We are ready to help you become masters of your land, to benefit your people, and to develop your industry, agriculture, science, and technology.”

Karankevich delivered a personal letter and official invitation from Lukashenko to Tinubu, inviting the Nigerian leader to visit Belarus at a future date.

Meanwhile, Tinubu stressed the importance of rural connectivity in driving national growth and prosperity.

Speaking while inaugurating the 15-kilometre A2–Pai Town Road in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the president lauded the FCT minister, NyesomWike, for prioritising rural development.

He told Wike, “You are doing commendable work in the underserved rural areas. We will ensure that development is not one-sided but balanced, inclusive, and aimed at improving lives.

“The commissioning of this newly constructed road, from the A2 junction on the Abuja–Lokoja expressway to Pai Town, is symbolic and strategic. It is symbolic because it represents Renewed Hope. It is strategic because it opens a new corridor for agriculture, commerce, education, and mobility—all of which are essential to strengthening our national economy from the grassroots up.”

The president called on the Pai community to take ownership of the road and preserve it for local growth.

“Let this road serve as a pathway to growth and a bridge to a better life for farmers, traders, students, and youth,” he said.

Tinubu stated that on his way to Pai from Sheda after inaugurating the 2,000 tractors for mechanised farming, he observed the pressing need for grain farmers and livestock owners to establish grazing opportunities and do what was necessary to improve productivity.

“We will help you. We will work with you. We will convert what used to be a liability and a source of conflict into a means of prosperity,” the president said.

Earlier, Wike said 150 kilometres of roads had been completed or were in progress across all six Area Councils of the FCT since the beginning of the Tinubu administration.

According to the FCT minister: “This is not propaganda. All six emergency roads approved in the 2023 supplementary budget have been completed and commissioned. These roads have transformed access and connectivity for our rural populations.”

The six completed roads are the 9km Paikon-Kore–Ibwa road in Gwagwalada Area Council, the 5km Gaba–Tokulo road in Bwari Area Council, with a two-span river bridge, and the 5km Asphalt carriageway from Tipper Garage Junction to LEA Secretariat in Kuje Area Council.

Others are the 11km Yangoji–Sukuku–Ebo Road in Kwali Area Council, the 5km Saburi 1 & 2 Road in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), and the Aguma Palace–Radio Nigeria–New Market Road in Gwagwalada Area Council.

The minister listed roads scheduled for inauguration later this week to include the 18km Karshi–Nyanya road, the 7.4km Old Ushafa Road, rehabilitation of Dutse–Lower Usman Dam, and the 16.4km dualisation of Ushafa–War College–Army Checkpoint Road.

According to Wike, these projects are vital for more than just transportation. He added that they contributed to food security, improved security response, and support socioeconomic inclusion.

He stated, “With better access, isolated communities can be reached, farmers can access their farmlands, and security agencies can patrol more effectively. We encourage real farmers—not speculators—to use this infrastructure to support the government’s food security agenda.”

The minister emphasised that the FCT administration, under Tinubu’s leadership, is working to expand development beyond the city centre, especially in terms of roads and electricity access.

“You can give someone an appointment, but nothing happens if you don’t support them. You have done both, and the results are visible across the FCT,” he said.

On his part, the traditional ruler of Pai, SarkinPai, AlhajiSaniAbubakar, expressed profound gratitude to Tinubu for his leadership and for appointing the FCT Minister.

Abubakar said, “Mr. President, we want to thank you for two things. One is appointing Mr Project to the FCT because the FCT minister has transformed how we live in rural communities. He is the right man for this job. We cannot thank you enough.

“This road has opened up many economic activities for us. Many of us had serious challenges transporting goods to market in the past—it hasn’t been fun. But now, you can see that everybody is happy. They have shown a large amount of appreciation for you and the minister.

“The minister used to say that we need leadership in this country, and you have given us that leadership. We want to thank you, Mr. President. I want to thank the Honourable Minister; he has been doing well for us, and a lot is still coming in this direction. We thank you, Mr. President.”

*Okonjo-Iweala: W’Africa must break trade barriers to unlock $500bn potential

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu yesterday urged the West African leaders to harness the region’s youthful population and abundant natural resources for economic transformation through industrialisation, education, and innovation.

This is just as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has called on the West African leaders to dismantle trade barriers, and reduce costs, to unlock the subregion’s $500 billion economic potential and secure prosperity for its young and growing population.

Delivering an opening address at the inaugural West Africa Economic Summit (WAES) in Abuja, the President described the region’s vibrant, youthful population as its greatest asset.

“However, this demographic promise can quickly become a liability if not matched by investments in education, digital infrastructure, innovation, and productive enterprise,” he warned.

President Tinubu emphasised the need for regional cooperation, citing Nigeria’s investments in skills development, digital connectivity, and youth empowerment.
According to him: “No one country can do this alone. Our prosperity depends on regional supply chains, energy networks, and data frameworks. We must design them together—or they will collapse separately”.

He called for urgent efforts to dismantle trade barriers across the subregion.

The President expressed concern that with intra-regional trade still below 10 per cent, West Africa must “coordinate or collapse” in the race for global economic relevance.

On infrastructure and investment, President Tinubu urged West Africa to move beyond the export of raw materials and prioritise value-added industries:
He said: “Let us recognise that Africa was left behind in previous industrial revolutions. We cannot afford to miss the next one.

“The era of ‘pit to port’ must end. We must turn our mineral wealth into domestic economic value—jobs, technology, and manufacturing.”

President Tinubu, who chairs the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, underscored the role of the private sector in driving transformation.
While calling on regional leaders to commit to clear deliverables, the President said:

“Our task is to find new and effective ways to invest in our collective future, improve the business climate, and create opportunities for our youth and women.
“Let us emerge from this summit with actionable outcomes: a renewed commitment to ease of doing business, enhanced intra-regional trade, improved infrastructure connectivity, and innovative ideas that move our people from poverty to prosperity.”

Nigeria and the Republic of Benin also yesterday signed an agreement to deepen bilateral integration and serve as a model for broader regional cooperation within ECOWAS.

The signing ceremony, witnessed by Nigerian President Tinubu and Benin Republic President Patrice Talon, took place in the course of the inaugural West Africa Economic Summit (WAES) in Abuja.

Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, signed the agreement, alongside Benin’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Shadiya Alimatou Assouman, and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Shegun Adjadi Bakari.

President Talon declared that the move signified a bold step toward real, actionable regional integration.

“President Tinubu and I have agreed on full integration between Benin and Nigeria. The responsibility now lies with our ministers to implement it. Benin and Nigeria are more than twins—we are the same people. Let us show the region that integration is possible,” he said.

President Talon cited the West African Gas Pipeline, which was designed to enhance regional energy cooperation, as an example of failure due to administrative bottlenecks.

“It is ridiculous. This failure of regional cooperation wastes resources and undermines integration,” he said.

As a result of these delays, President Talon said Benin has had to source gas from Qatar via a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU).

On the West African Power Pool, another regional initiative, he said: “We invested heavily in this infrastructure. But it is not functioning as expected. Unless we act decisively, I’m not confident it ever will.”

President Talon also addressed logistical obstacles along the Lagos–Abidjan Corridor, which unnecessary border checks and harassment have hampered.
He warned that poverty remains the region’s most dangerous destabilising force saying
Referencing changing global trade dynamics, President Talon cited U.S. President Donald Trump’s protectionist policies as a signal for African nations to prioritise their interests.

Earlier, the Presidents of Sierra Leone and Benin delivered national statements at the summit, which preceded the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

In her recorded video statement delivered virtually at the summit, Okonjo-Iweala, said West Africa was well-positioned to become a competitive economic bloc if it prioritised integration, built value chains, and embraced innovation and manufacturing.

“At this pivotal moment for our region, you have come together to unlock trade and investment opportunities to drive growth and job creation for West Africa’s nearly 460 million people — half of them under the age of 18.

“We have so much to build on. A $500 billion  regional economy with a dynamic entrepreneurial population and rich critical mineral and energy resources, West Africa’s creative industries are hot and not just at home,” she said.

Describing the region as “rich in critical mineral and energy resources”, she noted that West Africa’s creative industries were thriving and increasingly visible on the global stage — from music to literature, fashion, and food.

She said, “Wherever I travel, I increasingly encounter the region’s cultural exports. Finance and agriculture are also starting to come together — as shown by Côte d’Ivoire’s new commodities exchange, which could become a force for transparent markets, higher incomes, and reduced volatility for agricultural producers.”

While praising ECOWAS for being the first bloc to support her candidacy for the WTO leadership, Okonjo-Iweala stressed that the time had come for member states to act collectively to build regional economic strength.

“If each of our countries works alone, it is unlikely that we will be able to build efficient value chains or attract the investment we need,” the WTO DG said.
“However, if ECOWAS can think in terms of subregional value chains and markets, our economies become bigger and more attractive to investors.”

Tributes Flow as Sam Amuka Marks 90th Birthday in Style /2025/06/14/tributes-flow-as-sam-amuka-marks-90th-birthday-in-style/ /2025/06/14/tributes-flow-as-sam-amuka-marks-90th-birthday-in-style/#respond Sat, 14 Jun 2025 04:10:00 +0000 /?p=1092737

* Tinubu hails celebrant, describes him as man of all time

*Mbah, Idris, Soyinka, ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ Alumni, editors, others eulogise media icon

Deji Elumoye in Abuja, and Sunday Ehigiator in Lagos

It was a room of exciting buzz, laughter, funfair, good music, heartfelt tributes and nostalgic reminiscing as the crème de la crème of Nigerian journalism, friends, families, and close allies, gathered to honour Chief Sam Amuka, a mentor to generations of Nigerian journalists and founder of Vanguard Newspaper as he celebrated his 90th birthday yesterday in grand style.

The event, held in Lagos, brought together an array of dignitaries, including the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Also in attendance were the Chairman, ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ and Arise Media Group, Prince Nduka Obaigbena; the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III; the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Monday Onyeme; former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori; Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke; Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka; and former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi.

Others included former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba; Afenifere Leader, Chief Bode George; Former Governor of Cross Rivers State, Dr Donald Duke; former Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola; founder, ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ Day Newspaper, Frank Aigbogun; Founder, Ovation Magazine, Chief Dele Momodu; Former INEC REC, Muhammad Kudu Haruna; Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, and Publisher, Guardian Newspaper, Maiden Alex Ibru, amongst others.

Conveying a tribute from President Bola Tinubu, Idris said Sam Amuka has etched his name in “the conscience of our people, and his voice has long served as a compass and conscience for the Nigerian nation.

“Today, we celebrate the legacy of patriotism without blemish, which makes Uncle Sam one of the most enduring voices in Nigeria’s media and democratic revolution. He is the institutional memory of Nigerian journalism, with fingerprints on iconic newspapers like the Daily Times, Punch, and Vanguard Newspaper.
“These newspapers are not just publications; they are chronicles of our national life, reflecting our hopes, struggles, and trials; behind these murals stood a man of immeasurable principle and courage.

“He is not just a journalist, but a guardian of our national conscience, a centurion of our democracy, and a titan of press freedom in Africa.
“Without voices like Uncle Sam’s, our journey to democratic governance might have taken a darker path. We celebrate him as a warrior who fought with facts, not fists, and with principle, not propaganda.

“At 90, Uncle Sam remains arguably the oldest practising journalist in Nigeria. Still curious, still committed, still standing, we honour him not just with words, but with our commitment to a free, fearless, fair, and responsible media.”

In a short remark, Prince Nduka Obaigbena reminisced on a conversation with the celebrant 30 years ago.

According to him, “It’s been an honour to host this celebration for Uncle Sam today. Interestingly, the idea for this party was first conceived 30 years ago, when I mentioned to Uncle Sam that we would be hosting an evening event, and he jokingly replied that he wouldn’t be around by then.

“But as the saying goes, ‘Uncle Sam will outlive his mother, who lived over 100 years’. Today, we celebrate his remarkable life and legacy.”

Also speaking, Osoba said, “Today, we’re celebrating Uncle Sam’s special day, but I must admit, he didn’t want a big fuss. He preferred a low-key, informal gathering with plenty of music and dancing.

“I’ve known Uncle Sam for over 60 years, and I can attest that he’s a complex and multifaceted individual. Beneath his calm exterior lies a whirlwind of energy and strong opinions.

“As the Guild of Veterans, we wanted to honour Uncle Sam in a way that would make him happy. So, I visited him at home and we had a lively discussion, exchanging playful jabs and jokes. Eventually, he agreed to our plans, on the condition that the celebration would be informal and fun-filled.

“So, today, we’re ready to party in style, with Uncle Sam as our guest of honour. But be warned: if you take your eyes off him, he might slip away – that’s just his style!”

Also paying tribute to the celebrant, Ibori said, “On behalf of the people of Delta State, I’d like to extend warm congratulations to you on your 90th birthday. I’m honoured to be celebrating this milestone with you.

“I must say, you’re still as strong and feisty as ever. Just last week, we had a lively phone conversation. You called me, and when I returned your call, you told me to take my time. But then you abruptly ended the call, saying you’d visit me instead.

“What struck me about that conversation was your energy and determination. Even at 90, you’re still going strong. I’m grateful to have you in my life, and I cherish the memories we’ve shared.

“You’ve played a significant role in my life, and I appreciate your professionalism and guidance. Your wisdom and insight have been invaluable to me, and I’m thankful for your presence in my life. Once again, happy 90th birthday; may this milestone mark the beginning of many more years of good health, happiness, and continued service to our nation.”

Earlier, in his tribute to the celebrant, President Tinubu had hailed the veteran journalist, describing him as an eminent statesman, doyen of the media industry and journalism icon.

“Today, I celebrate Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on his 90th birthday. Fondly called Uncle Sam, Amuka-Pemu started his career at the Daily Times. Then, he co-founded The Punch with the late accountant, Chief Olu Aboderin. After parting ways with Aboderin, he set up the Vanguard newspaper in 1984, which became one of Nigeria’s most influential newspapers under his leadership.

“Mr. Amuka-Pemu has devoted most of his life to journalism. It is to his credit and managerial acumen that Vanguard is alive today, 41 years after its founding, despite the crisis in the media industry. Uncle Sam remains a shining example of dedication, resilience and integrity within the media industry.

“Today, he is not just a leader of the profession; he is a doyen. His leadership, from the altar of journalism, has influenced the media landscape and extended to his role as a respected leader in Delta State and the South-South geopolitical zone, making him an elder statesman.

“On the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day, I conferred on him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in profound recognition of his significant contributions to the country and his exemplary leadership in the field of journalism. I urge the younger journalists to emulate this highly respected publisher and leader.

“I wish Uncle Sam continued God’s grace and more years of impact. Our country is deeply grateful for his invaluable contributions to journalism and his enduring legacy.”

Also lending his voice, Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, joined other well-meaning Nigerians in celebrating the media mogul on his birthday, charging younger journalists to emulate him.

Mbah, in a congratulatory message to Amuka on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle @PNMbah yesterday, said the nonagenarian represented the best of Nigeria’s media industry.

He also hailed the veteran journalist on the conferment on him of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON, by President Bola Tinubu, describing it as a fitting tribute to a man who had given his all to his chosen career and nation building.

“I congratulate a man who many call Sad Sam, but who in reality dedicated himself to drawing away sadness from men.  Through his years as a newspaper columnist, he navigated life issues with a biting sarcasm that confounded perpetrators of evil and brought comfort to others.

“I celebrate an icon and a perfect gentleman, who is not only a media giant, but has also nurtured giants through his mentorship. His establishment of Vanguard with a motto of a better life for the people was for him a continuation of using the media space to enthrone good.

“For a man who refuses to celebrate himself despite the opportunities available to him, it is only proper that those whom he has positively affected have chosen the occasion of his 90th birthday to celebrate his positive passion for mankind,” he stated.

Concluding, he added, “Amuka is indeed worthy of the national honour for his immense contributions to national development and the positive influence he has had in shaping minds through the power of the press.

“I enjoin younger journalists to draw lessons of integrity, resilience, and service from his life. It is in this light that I wish Uncle Sam a happy birthday and also many more years of good health and continued impact.”

Similarly, the ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ Alumni Association also extended its heartfelt congratulations and profound tribute to Amuka. The association lauded Mr. Amuka’s remarkable resilience and immense contributions to the landscape of Nigerian journalism, acknowledging him as a true titan of the profession.

In a statement signed by Dr. Tony Onyima, President of the ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ Alumni Association, Mr Amuka was described as a beacon of journalistic excellence and an inspiration to generations of media practitioners.

“Uncle Sam, as he is fondly known, embodies the very spirit of perseverance and dedication,” Dr. Onyima stated. “His journey in journalism spans decades, marked by an unwavering commitment to truth, integrity, and the pursuit of impactful storytelling. At 90, his mind remains as sharp as ever, and his passion for the industry continues to burn brightly.”

Onyima further emphasised Amuka’s pivotal role in shaping the Nigerian media, particularly through establishing Vanguard Newspapers.

“The founding of Vanguard Media Limited was a watershed moment in Nigerian journalism,” he noted. “Uncle Sam’s foresight, courage, and business acumen transformed the media landscape, providing a vital platform for diverse voices and incisive analysis. His contributions have not only enriched public discourse but have also served as a training ground for countless journalists who have gone on to achieve great things, including many of our alumni.”

The ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ Alumni Association highlighted Amuka’s resilience in navigating the often-challenging terrain of media ownership and practice in Nigeria. “Through various political climes and economic uncertainties, Uncle Sam has consistently demonstrated an unyielding spirit,” Dr. Onyima continued.

Likewise, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) joined Nigerians in celebrating Amuka, on his remarkable 90th birthday.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the Guild described Uncle Sam’s birthday as a testament to his enduring wisdom, legacy, and commitment to the journalism profession.

The Guild explained that as the Founder of Vanguard Newspapers Group, Prince Amuka-Pemu has played a pivotal role in shaping the media landscape.

According to editors, “Uncle Sam’s commitment to excellence and robust journalism has inspired generations of journalists and media audiences alike.

“Under your guidance, Vanguard Newspaper has become a beacon of truth, reliability, and excellence.

“Your unwavering commitment to journalistic ethics has earned the respect and admiration of your peers, government, and readers.”

The Guild noted that Prince Amuka-Pemu’s contributions extend beyond journalism, citing his efforts to promote social justice, education, and civic engagement in Sapele and the Niger-Delta region through his media platform.

“As we celebrate your 90th birthday, we honour not only your achievements but also your life. Your legacy will continue to inspire and motivate us and future generations,” the Guild said.

*How Eludoyin, Chagoury, Soyinka, Alake, Osoba, Akande, Ibori, Fashola brokered the truce

Deji Elumoye in Abuja and Segun James in Lagos

Following interventions from various quarters, which culminated in the visit, yesterday, by members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the months long masked animosity between President Bola Tinubu and the Governor of Lagos, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been officially declared over by the president.
Tinubu personally welcomed Sanwo-Olu back into his warm embrace, at a gathering witnessed by party leaders and some close associates of the president, saying it was all now over.

Tinubu did not just forgive the governor, but also everyone, who had crossed him in the last few months and decided it was time to move.
The president’s hostility against the governor had been on for several months and discussed in hushed tones until last week, when Tinubu publicly snubbed Sanwo-Olu, lending credence to the much talked about grudge.

This development had also prompted many people to intervene and plead on behalf of the governor for the peace of the state and prosperity of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

But, yesterday, everything came to an end after members of the GAC, came to plead on behalf of the governor, and others who might have erred in the sight of the president.

ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ sources disclosed that two prominent members of the GAC had arrived earlier before others to hold a preliminary discussion with the president and by way of laying template for a meeting of the council.

While the larger meeting commenced, Chairman of the GAC, Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi, ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ learnt, welcomed the president to Lagos, and immediately established that it was obvious he was unhappy with some persons in the state, especially the governor and therefore pleaded for mercy.

Speaking after Alhaji Olusi was the Chairman of the APC in the state, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi, who also shared report of developments within the party with the president and the gathering, particularly on the recent local government election primary.

Responding, the president, according to multiple sources, who were at the meeting, said, “It’s all over now. All is forgiven,” assuring everyone in the room that he was no longer angry with anyone, let alone Sanwo-Olu.

The president, according to other sources, also told them that for the GAC members to know that he was no longer angry, he would not touch the report on the council primary elections and passed it as it was brought to him.

It was at this point that Sanwo-Olu and other members of the GAC prostrated to the president in apparent remorse, appeasement and appreciation for his forgiveness.

One of the sources told ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ that the meeting deliberately did not entertain a situation where the president or the governor had to start explaining what happened between them.

They just pleaded for outright mercy on behalf of the governor and the president acceded and the meeting came to a close.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke after the meeting, thanked the president for granting them audience but denied reports of feud between them, blaming instead, “people who are more catholic than the pope.”

The governor, who challenged a reporter with the NTA, interviewing him over alleged discord between him and the president, said, “Did you see any discord? Can’t you see, even you are smiling and I am smiling? There is none.

“You know, there are people who believe they are more Catholic than the Pope. You know, there are things that, you see people, you know, they cry more than the bereaved.

“You know, father and son, are things that we’ll always ensure that, you know… there’s nothing at all. He’s my father, he’s my leader, and we are grateful that he’s given us the audience today to come in and say hello to him.”

He said the Ikoyi meeting was a traditional courtesy visit by the GAC, a long-standing practice during festive periods, adding that the visit was also an opportunity to pray with the president, offer well wishes and continued support, while acknowledging the impact of Tinubu’s leadership over the past two years.

“It’s our usual festive period courtesy visits, and a time for Mr. President to meet with his brothers, leaders of our party, the Governor’s Advisory Council, (GAC) of Lagos State.  It’s something that they’re always looking forward to almost at every festive season or every time he comes around and this is no exception.
“We all came around to felicitate with him, to pray with him, to wish him well, to say to him that Lagosians and everyone is happy with him, that we can feel, we can see the impacts of what he has done in the last two years, and so to wish him well, and to say that he has our best wishes and support at all times.

“He was very happy to see us. Extremely very happy to see us. He was very excited that we are one big happy family, and we are not divided in any form and we all honestly also pledged our full loyalty to him, to his government, as our leader, as our father and it was unanimous.”

Highlighting key achievements attributed to the President’s backing, including the unveiling of new Blue Line trains in Lagos, supported by federal interventions, and a reduction in fuel and food prices.

He said, “Earlier today, I went to unveil our new Blue Line trains at the National Arts Theatre, which we just received 12 brand new, four sets each of three new set of trains for the Blue Line.

“At that unveiling, which we made like a naming ceremony, we actually acknowledged and thank Mr. President because he made it happen for us.
“About a year and a half ago, he supported us and ensured under his intervention for subsidy removal and understanding that Lagos will need additional means of transportation, he supported us and that just some of the things we’re talking about.

“So, we’re truly excited with what … and we’re not just excited because he’s our father, he’s our leader, we’re excited because we all can feel it. We can see, for the first time, you see petroleum pump price coming down. You see food prices coming down. These are things that put money in citizens pockets. If you’ve done well, let’s say it, you know.”

He also spoke on the proposed June 12 protests being planned by some groups, describing the move as baseless.

“We’re hearing people saying they want to protest on June 12. What will be the basis? We’re engaging them, we’re talking to them to do what? In two years, give this President enough more time.

“The economy, you can see, has made a positive bend and so all we need to do is to continue to wish him well and see those effects become reality in the cost of goods, the cost of living, security of life and property.”

Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his loyalty and that of the GAC to the president and the APC party, stressing their commitment to a united front ahead of the local government elections.

“The president charged us to ensure that the forthcoming local government election is peaceful  and that we should all go and do our very best and ensure that we continue to keep the flag of the party flying,” he added.

Unveiling three new sets of coaches for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line, at the National Arts Theatre Station, Sanwo-Olu thanked Tinubu for his support on the project.

The coaches were imported from China by Lagos Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (LAMATA) and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). Each set has four cars – in line with the operational standards of the Blue Line.

The coaches will expand the capacity of the Blue line. Once the new coaches were put on the tracks, passengers will see reduction in journey time and turnaround.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos had benefited immensely from the president’s support to subnational, following the removal of fuel subsidy.

According to him, President Tinubu’s intervention has encouraged subnational to pursue initiatives that would help bring about an alternative mode of transportation in addressing cost of living.

“The whole funding and the expansion of Blue Line capacity have been backed by an audacious transaction that has been made possible by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who, about a year and a half ago, in his usual understanding, appreciated what the subnational are doing under his Renewed Hope Agenda.

“While we have seen the positive effects of subsidy removal and the impact of embracing the CNG alternative and electricity-powered vehicles, Mr. President also deemed it fit to extensively support us financially in the procurement of these additional rolling stocks. We are extremely grateful. This is a testament that Renewed Hope Agenda is working well, especially for us in Lagos,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the additional coaches would bring about more predictable and reliable operations as well as improved turnaround time.

The governor further disclosed that the federal government extensively supported Lagos financially in the procurement of these additional rolling stocks.
Sanwo-Olu said Lagos would take delivery of a brand new set of trains to double the capacity of the Red Line, which operates between Agbado in Ogun State and Ebute Metta in the heart of Lagos Mainland.

He said coaches for the Red Line would be twice the size of the Blue Line due to passengers’ traffic, adding that the construction of the second phase of the Blue Line from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko was on course, and that stations and tracks were already coming out in shape.

The Wisemen Who Brokered Truce

Quite a number of persons, had intervened in the feud between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, but some very important personalities – about eight of them – played very prominent roles and made the eventual truce feasible.

They include Tinubu’s longtime friend and business ally, Chief Dipo Eludoyin; the president’s renowned billionaire business associate, Mr. Gilbert Chagoury; the Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka; and the Minister of Solid Minerals, Mr. Dele Alake.

Also, on the list is a former governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba; a former governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande; a former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori and a former governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola.

These people had met with the president at different times to intervene on behalf of the governor, and did not give up, even when the president was not yielding and still appeared angry and visibly displeased with the governor.

But because of their relationship with the president, they remained adamant and kept making a case for the governor until the president eventually soft-pedaled and forgave the governor.

Dipo Eludoyin

Chairman and Executive Officer of the Paragon Holdings, Chief Dipo Eludoyin, has been friends with the president for almost their entire youth, and had stayed close even as they grew older. He is one of the few that could look the president in the eyes and say his mind without pandering to sentiments. He commands huge respect with the president, and it was on account of this that he was able to speak to the president and pleaded for mercy on behalf of the governor. Perhaps, his peace offering has been accepted.

Gilbert Chagoury

A billionaire with chain of businesses all over Nigeria, including the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites, Mr. Gilbert Chagoury, has moved from being a close confidant of the president to being a family member. They’ve both come of age.

Their relationship is one of mutual respect and close ties as Chagoury’s construction company, Hitech, has stepped in to replace Julius Berger, who for the last 30 years of building roads, bridges without let, has been the federal government’s development partner. But the Chagourys have proven to do the same quality infrastructure as Julius Berger cheaper and faster in terms of delivery.

Although he is not one to take inconsequential requests to the president, he is definitely not one the president could glibly say no to. His intervention in the matter could not be quantified, and even if he had looked at it from a business point of view, it has ultimately paid off with yesterday’s truce.

Wole Soyinka

The Revered Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has never shied away from discussing his relationship with Tinubu, even if it would earn him knocks from certain quarters. Yet, he would not abuse the friendship. Prof has met with the president, at least, about two times that’s known to many over the Lagos matter in general. His recent visit to Tinubu was also connected to the governor’s plight and he reportedly made a case for him. Tinubu probably considered the old man’s plea.

Dele Alake

If there was any man, who has been consistent, not because he liked the governor more than his current job, but because he has been able to see the bigger picture and could read the political implications of some of the developments very well, then it is the Minister of Solid Minerals, Mr. Dele Alake.
For whatever it is worth, the governor owes Alake a bouquet of gratitude. Even more instructive, is his love for the president and the need to protect him at all cost, and also save him from himself. This is why the peace route has been Alake’s only path for the period the crisis lasted. He was the real deal.

Olusegun Osoba

Although older, a former governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba and the president had crossed paths politically for almost 40 years. They were also elected governors together in 1999 on the platform of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD), in addition to their SDP background in the early ‘90s.
Respectable and always mindful of self-reservation, Chief Osoba is another man, who could also look the president straight in the eyes, tell him his truth and walk away. He, too, had been worried about the larger implications of the situation and continued to intervene until peace was achieved.

Bisi Akande

Call him their political uncle, Chief Bisi Akande, a former governor of Osun State, has always been a balancing force among the various political tendencies, either in his state, Southwest or national.

The protem national chairman of the APC, Chief Akande, like Osoba was worried about the Lagos situation, and didn’t like the optics coming from the fact that the president’s homestead was contending with an artificial storm. Even though he was constantly wearing a smiling face, he never allaowed the president to savour a moment of peace until truce was achieved.

James Ibori

One of the former governors in Nigeria, elected alongside President Tinubu in 1999, and who shares incredible closeness with the president is a former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori. Not many people knew this fact about Ibori and Tinubu.

The Odidigboigbo of Delta State always has the president’s ears and curiously, he never abused his relationship with him hence not many people knew this about him. In fact, Tinubu sees Ibori as one governor, who paid a very high price under former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s highhandedness against governors in 1999.

He was as worried as many others, who had intervened and quietly, he, too, spoke to the president on the need for peace. Let’s say his efforts have yielded good fruits.

Babatunde Fashola

Call him the intellectual bulwark of the president, working from the situation room, you still would not have aptly captured the place of Fashola in the heart of the president. Interestingly, they too have had a rough past. That experience has however brought them closer.

However, knowing Fashola’s capacity in terms of content and character, he is not one of those the president would look away from. As ‘the first son’ of Tinubu’s political family, having succeeded him and understood the import of the office, his selfless but reasoned intervention in the matter is incalculable and definitely, the result is what manifested yesterday at the Queen’s Drive home of the president in Lagos.

Apart from the above eight individuals, who have the president’s ears, the roles played the GAC members in the quest for peace until yesterday cannot be understated. As a matter of fact, they have had to endure indignation in the name of seeking peace between the president and the governor.

Thus, either as a group or individual members, the GAC did not just justify the essence of its establishment but has also lived up to the moment. At the end of it all, it was a collective win and Lagos will now know peace again.

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday evening played host to Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, at his private residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The governor was accompanied by his elder brother, prominent businessman and philanthropist, Adedeji Adeleke as well as internationally renowned Afrobeat artiste, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.

The visit was made public by the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, via a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, @DOlusegun.

He wrote: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu receives in audience, H.E. Ademola Adeleke, the Executive Governor of Osun State, and Chief Adedeji Adeleke at his residence in Lagos.”

Details of the closed-door meeting were not immediately made public, but sources described the visit as cordial and reflective of the President’s inclusive engagement style, particularly with leaders and influential figures across political divides.

Adeleke, a member of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has maintained an amicable relationship with the presidency, often praising President Tinubu’s non-partisan approach to governance.

His elder brother, Adedeji Adeleke, is the father of Davido, whose music and philanthropic influence have made global impact.

The presence of Davido at the meeting sparked widespread interest on social media, with his supporters and fans applauding what many see as a symbolic moment of unity and generational bridging.

The visit comes amid increased behind-the-scenes political consultations and alliance-building ahead of the 2027 general elections, though no official link has been made between the meeting and any electoral agenda.

President Tinubu, who returned to Lagos last week, has recently intensified consultations with leaders from various sectors, including state governors, traditional rulers, business moguls, and cultural icons.

At Inauguration of Lagos-Calabar Highway, Tinubu Canvasses Protection of National Infrastructure /2025/06/01/at-inauguration-of-lagos-calabar-highway-tinubu-canvasses-protection-of-national-infrastructure/ /2025/06/01/at-inauguration-of-lagos-calabar-highway-tinubu-canvasses-protection-of-national-infrastructure/#respond Sun, 01 Jun 2025 05:02:21 +0000 /?p=1088520

*Asks Nigerians to be patient with him

*Warns developers, landowners against illegal construction*Akpabio to govs: Don’t hand over power to incapable successors

*Umahi seeks 2% of sales from Dangote, BUA Cement

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to treat public infrastructure as a shared national asset, emphasising that roads, bridges, and highways must be preserved and maintained through collective responsibility.

Tinubu has also warned property developers and landowners against building on federal infrastructure corridors without proper authorisation.

He appealed to Nigerians to be patient with his administration, adding that he knows that their expectations are very high.

The president emphasised the implication of such actions and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enforcing urban planning regulations.
This is just as the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio urged serving governors, particularly those nearing the end of their terms, to be intentional and patriotic in seeking a successor.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Works, Mr Dave Umahi has requested President Tinubu to direct Dangote and BUA cement companies to remit two percent of their sales to the Ministry as a reward for helping them to increase their sales.

President Tinubu spoke yesterday at the official inauguration of Phase 1, Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway landmark project.

The highway, which covers 750 kilometres, and passes through Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states, was designed as a six-lane carriageway within a 60-meter corridor.

President Tinubu declared that the era of indiscriminate development and encroachment on public infrastructure is over.

He stressed that his government will not be disposed to paying compensation for buildings or developments that violate federal right-of-way regulations, saying “If you build illegally, you bear the consequences.”

The president urged developers, traditional leaders, and local authorities to respect existing urban development laws, noting that illegal construction not only threatens the integrity of national infrastructure but also endangers lives and undermines economic growth.

He further urged them as well as other local authorities to respect existing urban development laws, adding that illegal construction not only threatens the integrity of national infrastructure but also endangers lives and undermines economic growth.

Tinubu appealed to communities along the coastal highway corridor to guard the infrastructure from vandalism, illegal dumping, and unauthorised modifications.

“These projects belong to all of us. They are not political trophies; they are lifelines for future generations. Every citizen has a role to play in keeping them safe, clean, and functional.”

Shedding light on the early challenges his administration faced in initiating the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, the President recalled how critics dismissed the project as a venture that was not realisable.

“Many critics dismissed it as impossible, citing the unpredictable and destructive nature of the Atlantic Ocean along the Lekki-Epe-Victoria Island axis.
“We were told it couldn’t be done. Some said the Atlantic would devour us. But we stood firm. We rejected fear, and we embraced science, engineering, and courage.”

He said that through strategic coastal defences and the use of reinforced concrete pavement technology, his administration prevented what he described as a looming ecological disaster.

“A tsunami-like disaster would have washed away Ikoyi and Victoria Island. But today, we have not only tamed the ocean, we’ve turned a threat into a treasure.”
As the project inches toward completion, President Tinubu reiterated that every Nigerian, whether developer, engineer, community member, or public servant, has a stake in its success.

He said: “Let us build, not destroy. Let us protect, not abuse. And let us always remember: Progress is not handed to us; we must shape it together.”
The president appealed to Nigerians to be patient with his administration.

He said, “I know at this stage, your expectation is still very high and our people are still going through difficult times. I take this opportunity to appeal to all Nigerians that the hope is here and it is realisable.

“You would be proud of the benefits, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Inflation is coming down, the corruption in the exchange rate is eliminated, the corruption in fuel subsidy is limited to the barest minimum.

“It is all for you the people, we are reducing the cost of manufacturing, and encouraging manufacturing locally. We give all incentives for everyone to abide by the principle. May God bless our country; may God bless Lagos State and keep our fighting soldiers safe,” Tinubu

He also virtually inaugurated and flagged off several road projects across the six geo-political zones.

The projects inaugurated by President Tinubu in the South-south region are the rehabilitation of Calabar-Ugep-Katsina-Ala Road, Section II (Ugep-Katsina-Ala) in Benue/Cross River States; dualisation of East-West Road Section II (Sub Section I) Eleme Junction in Port Harcourt – Ahoada in Rivers State; rehabilitation of Alesi-Ugep(Iyamoyung-Ugep) Section in Cross River State. Upgrading of 15km Section of the East-West Road, Port Harcourt (Eleme Junction)-Onne Port Junction in Rivers State.

President Tinubu inaugurated the rehabilitated Enugu-Port Harcourt Road Section III, Enugu-Lokpanta, in the South-east Zone, a new bridge at Akpoha in Ebonyi State to replace the near-collapsed bridge; reconstruction of the collapsed Enugu Bridge at New Artisan Market Enugu-Port Harcourt Road in Enugu State.
Other inaugurated projects in the South-west Zone are: Rehabilitation, Construction & Expansion of Lagos-Shagamu-Ibadan Dual Carriageway Section II in Oyo State; rehabilitation of Ikorodu-Shagamu Road in Lagos State; emergency comprehensive repair of the Eko Bridge (4.1km) in Lagos State (from Alaka, Surulere-Apongbon including all Ramps); the construction of Deep-Sea Port Access Road in Lagos State through Epe to Shagamu – Benin Expressway in Lagos and Ogun states.

In the North-central Zone, President Tinubu inaugurated the construction of the Shendam Bridge in Plateau State and the Ilobu-Enrile road in Kwara and Osun States.

In the North-east Zone, he inaugurated the Jimeta Bridge in Yola, Adamawa State, while in the North West Zone, he inaugurated the reconstructed Yakasai Badume-Damargu-Marken Zalli Roads in Kano State and the reconstruction of Kano-Kwanar Danja Hadeja Section II: Kano-Tsalle in Kano and Jigawa State.

President Tinubu flagged off the following new projects: Ibadan-Ife-Ilesha-Akure-Benin Road in Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Edo states; construction of Nembe-Brass Road; construction of a section of Enugu-Onitsha Carriageway (total length of 107km); and rehabilitation of Zaria-Hunkuyi-Kufur-Gidan Mutum Daya Road in Kaduna/Kano States.

Also, the president flagged off the dualisation of Kano-Maiduguri Road, linking Kano-Jigawa-Bauchi-Yobe and Borno states (Section I: Kano-Wudil-Shuarin), which has a total length of 105km; the construction of Kano Northern Bypass Road in Kano State; and the construction of Maiduguri Bypass Road.

Also speaking at the Lagos occasion, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio urged serving governors, particularly those nearing the end of their terms, to be intentional and patriotic in seeking a successor.

Akpabio commended the president’s vision and execution, describing him as a leader blessed with both “sight and vision.”

He said: “Mr. President, I can confirm once again that with this commissioning today, you have proven that whenever the National Assembly says you are doing well, we are always right”.

While advising serving state governors, particularly those in their second and final terms, Akpabio cautioned: “Do not hand over power to anyone who is not looking for it. Do not hand over power to someone who is not prepared. Governance is too important to be left in the hands of cronies or loyalists who lack capacity.”

He particularly warned the governors against choosing successors based on superficial loyalty or subservience.

Speaking earlier, Works Minister, Senator Umahi, praised President Tinubu for what he’s doing across the country, and for insisting that Nigerian youth should be made to learn the new technology, saying that after God, his loyalty would be to the President.

According to him, the real thing is the reinforced concrete pavement, which, according to him, can last between 50 and 100 years.

Umahi also requested President Tinubu to direct Dangote and BUA cement companies to remit two per cent of their sales to the Ministry as a reward for helping them increase their sales.

Umahi also disclosed that N18 billion has so far been paid as compensation for section one of the project.

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Chagoury brothers, and contractors witnessed the event.

Industry captains, including Aliko Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu, and UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, attended the inauguration ceremony.

President Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kano State, as well as the families and loved ones of those who died in the accident.

According to him: “This is a devastating blow to the nation. It casts a shadow over the National Sports Festival, a celebration of unity, talent, and excellence. It has long served as a platform for discovering and nurturing athletes who bring pride to Nigeria on both national and international stages”.

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate activation of the National Emergency Response Centre following the devastating floods in Mokwa Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, which claimed several lives and displaced several families.

This is just as the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) yesterday said the number of corpses recovered so far from the flood that ravaged had risen to 151 with 3,018 persons displaced.

Tinubu’s directive was given early yesterday after he received distressing reports on the scale of the disaster.

In a statement issued via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, @officialABAT, President Tinubu expressed profound grief over the incident and promised a swift and compassionate federal response to support the affected communities.

According to the president: “Upon receiving initial reports, I immediately directed the activation of the National Emergency Response Centre. I have also been briefed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the scale of the disaster and the urgent humanitarian needs.”

President Tinubu confirmed that relief materials and temporary shelter assistance were being deployed to the disaster zone without delay.

Federal agencies, including NEMA, have been mobilised in coordination with the Niger State Government to intensify rescue efforts and provide life-saving aid.
“Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, and all relevant federal agencies have been mobilised to support the state government’s efforts. We will ensure that no Nigerian affected by this disaster is left behind or unheard of”, he explained.

The president further directed security agencies to support the emergency response teams, stressing the federal government’s commitment to ensuring that lives are saved and dignity restored in the wake of the disaster.

“I assure all those impacted that your government stands with you. We will continue to coordinate with the Niger State Government to ensure a swift, coordinated, and compassionate response, one that prioritises lives, restores dignity, and accelerates recovery,” Tinubu assured.

In condoling the bereaved families and the people of Niger State, the President said the entire nation shares in their pain and pledged unwavering support to the victims.

He said: “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the good people of Niger State at this difficult time. In times of adversity, we draw strength from our unity, resilience, and shared humanity.”

President Tinubu called on all Nigerians to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts and prayers, noting that moments of national tragedy demand collective empathy and action.

Meanwhile, NSEMA yesterday said the number of corpses recovered so far from the flood had risen to 151 with 3,018 persons displaced.

The agency made this known in a terse statement in which it said three communities were affected and two bridges washed away.

The Director General of the agency, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, revealed that 503 households were affected while 265 homes were washed away.
According to him, two roads were also washed away, while 11 people were injured in the flooding disaster.

“The latest update from the Mokwa communities flood shows that 151 corpses have so far been recovered, while 11 persons were injured.
“Also, 3,018 persons have been displaced, while 503 households were affected, and 265 homes washed away. Three communities in Mokwa LG were also affected, while two roads and two bridges were affected by the flood,” Baba-Arah said.

NSEMA had on Thursday stated that a deadly flood disaster ravaged two communities of Tiffin maza and Anguwan hausawa in Mokwa town of Mokwa LG in Niger State.

According to the agency, the incident occurred on Wednesday night during a downpour that lasted hours.

It said the surging flood water submerged and washed away over 50 residential houses with their occupants.

In a related development, President Tinubu, yesterday, dispatched a high-level delegation to Niger State in response to the devastating floods.

Leading the delegation were the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda.

The team paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba, to deliver the President’s message of condolence and solidarity.
This was contained in a statement signed by Idris media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim.

Speaking during the visit, Idris conveyed the President’s deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating that Tinubu had ordered the immediate deployment of federal resources to support the relief effort.

According to the statement, Idris confirmed that NEMA was working with state authorities to ensure victims are cared for, bodies recovered, and aid delivered efficiently.

Adeniyi: Tinubu’s Reforms Push Customs’ Revenue to N1.3tn in Q1 2025 /2025/05/25/adeniyi-tinubus-reforms-push-customs-revenue-to-n1-3tn-in-q1-2025/ /2025/05/25/adeniyi-tinubus-reforms-push-customs-revenue-to-n1-3tn-in-q1-2025/#respond Sun, 25 May 2025 04:15:44 +0000 /?p=1086385

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has disclosed that the agency recorded an unprecedented revenue of N1.3 trillion in the first quarter of 2025, representing over 100 per cent increase from the N600 billion it collected during the same period in 2023.

Adeniyi attributed this remarkable growth to the transformative reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, as revealed in an upcoming State House documentary, marking the president’s second anniversary.

According to a statement issued yesterday by presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the Comptroller-General emphasised that the revenue surge emanated from improved technological deployment, enhanced port operations, tightened enforcement on revenue leakages, and a renewed culture of accountability across Customs commands.

“We collected N1.3 trillion in Q1 2025 alone. This is not due to higher import volumes. Imports have dropped due to foreign exchange constraints. What has changed is efficiency, transparency, and enforcement,” Adeniyi was quoted as saying.

Adeniyi disclosed that the NCS was preparing to launch the $3.2 billion E-Customs Modernisation Project, which will digitise cargo processing, surveillance, and payment systems across Nigeria’s ports and borders.

“We’re laying the foundation to move from a manual, paper-based system to a fully digital service. The E-Customs Project is central to our future. Once fully deployed, we project it will add $250 billion in cumulative revenue over 20 years,” Adeniyi said.

Adeniyi added that the newly launched Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme is now onboarding pre-vetted importers, allowing compliant businesses faster processing and reducing port congestion.

“It’s about trust and efficiency. If you’re compliant, you get green-lane treatment. This is how modern customs systems work globally,” he said.

The Customs CG confirmed that the agency has intensified its anti-smuggling operations and closed long-standing revenue leakages.

He said over N64 billion was recovered from previously under-assessed or undervalued imports in the last nine months, while major smuggling rings at the Seme, Idiroko, Katsina, and Sokoto borders were dismantled.

According to him, the new joint border patrol task forces established in coordination with the Nigerian Army, DSS, and police have also yielded positive results.

“We’re no longer just chasing smugglers in the bush. We’re using data, surveillance drones, and port intelligence to act in real time. Once systemic leakages are now being plugged,” Adeniyi said.

To ease trade and reduce business costs, the Comptroller-General disclosed that NCS is fast-tracking the roll-out of the National Single Window.
This digital portal, he said, will integrate all government agencies involved in cargo clearance.

“Right now, you deal with up to 15 agencies manually. With the Single Window, you’ll do it all online, in one place. This will slash clearance time and costs,” the CG explained, adding that clearance timelines at Apapa and Tin Can Ports have already dropped from 21 days to 7–10 days for compliant importers,” he added.

Adeniyi said the agency had introduced fast-track lanes for agro-exports and was working with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) to streamline outbound cargo processes in line with the government’s push for non-oil exports.

“We’re promoting exports aggressively. Last year, Nigeria exported over N340 billion worth of solid minerals and agro commodities through formal channels, up by 38per cent. We’re targeting even more in 2025,” he said.

The Comptroller-General stated that the customs service was also undergoing internal transformation, with over 1,800 officers trained in advanced data analytics, risk profiling, and artificial intelligence.

“Customs is no longer just about physical inspection. We are becoming an intelligence-led organisation, and our officers are being retrained to match global standards.

“The president gave us a clear directive: ‘Block leakages, facilitate trade, and raise revenue without burdening Nigerians.’ That is what we are doing. And the results are beginning to speak for themselves,” Adeniyi added.

.Says Tinubu directed insecurity must cease bend of 2025

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has appraised the security situation in the country with a declaration that recent military gains signal Nigeria is turning the tide against insecurity.

In an interview for an upcoming State House documentary to mark President Bola Tinubu’s second anniversary, Abubakar said the President had given a clear order: “End insecurity decisively and do it fast before the end of 2025.”

According to him, “For the first time in years, Nigerians can travel the Birnin Gwari to Kaduna Road even at midnight. That’s progress. Zaria to Funtua to Gusau is now peaceful, and Abuja-Kaduna Road has been largely secured.”

He pointed to â€˜Operation Fasan Yama’ and other ongoing military efforts in different theatres nationwide as driving forces behind improved security across several regions.

Abubakar revealed impressive results so far recorded by the security agencies. 13,543 terrorists and bandits were neutralised, 17,500 arrested, 9,821 hostages rescued, and 24,000 terrorists surrendered.

“These aren’t just numbers. These are lives saved, villages reclaimed, and communities restored,” the minister stressed.

He noted a remarkable return to normalcy in many parts of the North-east and North-west: “Markets are back. Farms are productive again. We’ve seen Fulani, Hausa, and other communities rebuilding trust. The progress is real and visible.”

Abubakar also highlighted President Tinubu’s approval of N18 billion to clear insurance arrears for military personnel and boost troop welfare.

“We’ve doubled troop ration allowances from N1,500 to N3,000. Life insurance now covers all soldiers, and I’ve personally visited frontline bases to hear their concerns and boost morale,” he added.

Regarding military modernisation, the minister said, “President Tinubu has not turned down a single request for equipment. We now have attack helicopters, UAVs, MRAPs, APCs, and top-tier weaponry. Our armed forces are better equipped than ever.”

He described the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Bill as a game-changer.

“We’ve signed over 100 local and international defence partnerships. We’re producing ammunition here. Two MRAPs assembled locally are parked outside this office. This is the beginning of true defence independence.”

Abubakar reported a drop in pipeline vandalism and oil theft in the South-south, with crude oil production rising from 1.4 million to nearly 1.8 million barrels daily.

“We’ve arrested six ships, destroyed 2,000 illegal refineries, and dismantled over 5,000 crude oil storage pits,” he disclosed.

Looking forward, Abubakar said: “This President is not making empty promises. He’s building the institutions, the morale, the partnerships, and the firepower to secure Nigeria. We are not relenting. The goal is total victory over insecurity by the end of 2025, and we are on track.”

He called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and united: “Change doesn’t happen overnight, but we’re laying a solid foundation. Neutral observers will tell you that we’ve made real progress. The President’s commitment is unwavering.”

With just less than two years to the 2027 general election, President Bola Tinubu, has begun to consolidate his chances ahead of a potential second term run with an expanding party base amid dwindling opposition that has been hit by mass defections to the ruling party.

At the same time, the opposition coalition, too, has started to mull the options before it, chief of which is to either align with one of the existing parties or form a new one.

This is coming on the heels of a major boost to the President’s 2027 potential bid, as key apparatchiks of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including governors of the party, members of the national assembly and other stakeholders endorsed him for another term in office yesterday.

However, Tinubu, for the first time yesterday, reacted to the unceasing defection from the opposition parties to the APC and the alleged decent to one-party state, saying, “don’t blame a people bailing out a sinking ship. I am expecting more to come.”

The president, who insisted that the development reflected democratic choices, not one-party threat, promised that the next two years would be great for the Nigerian people.

Tinubu, who spoke at the APC National Summit held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja, also stressed that the 1999 Constitution guaranteed freedom of movement and association.

According to him, it’s one party that was ruling and driving the aspirations of Nigerians.

“You don’t blame a people bailing out a sinking ship. I am expecting more to come, that is the game. We are in a constitutional democracy that guarantees the freedom of movement and the freedom of association. Welcome to the progressives,” he said.

Responding to concerns that the influx of prominent figures joining the APC could lead Nigeria to a one-party state, the president asserted that the defections demonstrated the democratic preferences and ambitions of the populace.

Tinubu, who was assertive, promised to lead the nation to the promise land.

“I’m glad about what we have and I’m expecting more to come. That is the game. We’re in a constitutional democracy. Don’t forget the freedom of movement and the freedom of association are not criminally punishable.

“Welcome to the progressives. Sweep them clean. The endorsement today, the ‘carry go’ expression—I know road. We will lead you on to that promised land,” he declared.

Tinubu’s comments came amid mounting concerns in opposition circles that the political landscape might be tilting dangerously toward single-party dominance.

He gave reassurances on the nation’s economic trajectory, stating that the administration’s efforts to revamp Nigeria’s economy were yielding results.

His words: “The resuscitation of the Nigerian economy is on course. The hope is standing before you—take it on. You are the leaders and the conscience of this country. Nigeria will be industrialised. The next two years will be great. We have the mission, we have the vision.”

Referring to party faithful and supporters, some of whom might feel left out of political appointments thus far, the president called for more patience and trust.

“To many of you I have not offered political positions, be patient, many things are coming,” he said, signaling a broader inclusion strategy as his administration advances.

On the fuel subsidy removal policy, which his administration owned two years ago after it was removed by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Tinubu said it was well justified, noting that a large chunk of savings from the subsidy regime had gone into healthcare provision, education and security.

The president, however, described his deputy, Kashim Shettima as a member of his administration’s think tank.

“Mr Vice President, even if I will stand on existing protocol, I will recognise you because you are a member of the Think tank,” he said.

2027: APC Apparatchiks Endorse Tinubu

The path to the 2027 presidential election might have begun to ease off for President Tinubu with about two years to the end of his first term as the governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party’s National Assembly caucus and other members of the APC have thrown their weight behind the president’s re-election.

The vote of confidence passed on the president came at the APC National Summit held on yesterday at the Banquet hall of the Presidential Villa.

The event, which was meant to review the midterm performance of the Tinubu administration was turned to an endorsement summit for his re-election bid.

Chairman of Progressives Governors’ Forum and the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, revealed that APC governors met at their meeting on Wednesday and expressed satisfaction on the midterm performance of the president.

“As I speak only this afternoon, members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum met at my lodge and took five different decisions to bring to the leadership and members of our great party. Taking advantage of this summit that we are satisfied with, the mid term review and performance evaluation report of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We are aware that Nigerian nation is moving in the right direction, economically, socially and politically, and that we are convinced that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria will get to her destination faster in prosperity.

“We have made the resolution of these governors that the president to be used and be Adopted as our flag bearer for 2027 presidential election, for the second time in office.

“That the governors produced by All Progressive Congress are hereby charged to take responsibility to manage federal government policies, occupied the political space in their domains and take responsibility for winning all elections in their states,” he said.

Uzodinma, therefore, moved a motion that Tinubu be adopted as the party’s candidate in 2027, and the motion was seconded by the Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on his part, said though things were difficult for Tinubu in 2023, he could see everything turning around for him in 2027.

Akpabio recalled that during the campaign for 2023 elections, large rallies in some regions were organised but when votes were announced, Tinubu could not get 25 per cent from those regions.

“So, there is no need for eloquent speeches. Let the results that will come in 2027 reflect the action and the speeches that we are saying here today.

“Please note that in politics, it’s not over until it’s over. It’s the tree that bears the sweetest fruit that also gets the highest amount of stones.

“So, everything said here will show that yes, you are on course. You did it in Lagos, you are doing it in Nigeria. Even Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, has changed. The diplomats have confirmed that. This was not the way it was before you came. The economy has changed.

“But the reality is that we are not there yet, and we don’t want them there. Of course, Mischief makers are still meeting in the night, so politics is the game of witchcraft. They meet in the night, and things change in the day.”

On a lighter note, Akpabio faulted Uzodinma for moving the motion  to pass vote of confidence in Tinubu, saying as members of the legislative arm, they were in better position to move the motion  while Abbas seconded.

On that premise, he said, “I move that the president be returned as the candidate of the APC in 2027 and as the President of Nigeria.”

The motion was seconded by the Speaker of the  House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.

Abbas, while speaking, noted that as they  turned their gaze on 2027, they must acknowledge both the achievements they  had made and the challenges that lay ahead.

He said this was the time for every APC stakeholder to intensify grassroots engagement,  articulate the achievements of the administration in clear and compelling terms.

Abbas added: “Now is the time for every APC stakeholder to take our message directly to our communities. An electoral victory in 2027 will not be won on paper alone. It can only be secured by the confidence we inspire among our people.

“We can only inspire confidence by demonstrating how our policies are improving people’s lives and how they will continue to enhance the lives of Nigerians.

“All of us must effectively market the successes of the Tinubu Administration, specifically the recovery of fiscal health, the job creation drive, the expansion of infrastructure, and the security gains.

“Every APC governor, every APC Senator and Member, every Minister and Commissioner, every Special Adviser and Assistant, every Board Member, and indeed every political appointee of this government must also collaborate with the president to translate his initiatives into tangible benefits that resonate with citizens across every ward.”

In his remarks, the National Chairman of APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, said the forum was not only meant to serve as a convergence of ideas and ideals but as a moment of reflection on where the party  stood, what it has achieved, and what lay ahead for it and the country.

He said at the heart of their current political and developmental journey was the Renewed Hope Agenda – a bold and necessary blueprint put forth by Tinubu.

He stressed that the agenda was not just a political slogan; it was a comprehensive vision aimed at resetting the foundations of governance, restoring economic vibrancy, and instilling a renewed sense of national purpose.

He said when the president campaigned on the Renewed Hope Agenda, he was not offering empty slogans, he was presenting a contract with the Nigerian people, a bold vision for economic revitalisation, institutional renewal, and inclusive development.

According to him, “Barely two years now into his administration, we can confidently say that Renewed Hope is no longer a vision on paper, it is a reality in motion.”

Ganduje noted that as the governing party, they must rise as the first and most steadfast defenders and implementers of this vision and as progressives.

“As I stand before you, I must stress this truth: we cannot go into the future divided, unprepared, or reactive. The challenges of our nation require a cohesive, disciplined, and ideologically sound party.

“Our goal must not only be to win elections, but to lead with purpose, to earn the trust of Nigerians continuously, and to inspire belief in governance again,” he added.

APC N’Central Backs Tinubu’s Re-election

At another function, the APC North Central zone has also endorsed Tinubu  to run for another tenure of four years ahead of the 2027 elections.

The political leaders from the zone made their decision known on Wednesday night in Abuja at the APC North Central zone stakeholders’ meeting.

The motion to endorse Tinubu for 2027 was moved by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

While reading the communique after the meeting, the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdulahi Sule commended the president for the numerous developmental strides being executed across the North Central zone.

The communique was jointly signed by Akume, Governors Abdulrahman Abdulrazak of Kwara, Sule, Rev. Fr .dr. Hyacinth Alia of Benue, Umar Bago of  Niger, Usman Ododo of Kogi, Senator Simon Lalong, and  Mr. Zaphani Jisalo, Minister of Special Duties.

Sule added that from infrastructure projects, road rehabilitation, educational upgrades, to rural electrification and agricultural initiatives, the positive impact of his Renewed Hope Agenda was gradually transforming the region into a hub of opportunity and growth.

The governor stressed that the region acknowledged these efforts as a clear demonstration of the president’s sincere commitment to equity and national development.

“We, the leaders and critical stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the North Central Geo-Political Zone of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, after extensive deliberations on matters of national importance and regional development at our strategic meeting held on Tuesday, May 21st, 2025, at the Lagos/Osun Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, hereby resolve as follows:

“Unanimously pass a vote of confidence in the President’s leadership and endorsement for second term:

“Having critically examined the current trajectory of national governance and noting the courage, foresight, and tenacity with which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has steered the ship of State amidst daunting challenges, we unanimously pass a vote of confidence in his administration.

“In furtherance of this conviction, we wholeheartedly endorse President Tinubu to contest for a second term in office as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2027, in order to consolidate the gains of his reforms and bring them to full fruition.”

The North Central leaders also passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of the party led by Ganduje for promoting internal democracy, party unity, and progressive governance.

Sule added that they affirmed their unwavering loyalty and alignment with the core ideals of the APC.

Earlier, the Coordinator of North Central APC and Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrazaq said despite the transitional inconveniences of the early stage, the president’s reforms were bearing good fruits, and the future looks bright.

Noting that this was clear from all measurable economic indices, Abdukrazaq commended the president for the national forest guards policy, saying the bold effort placedlocal communities at the heart of our national security strategy.

According to him, “It is a policy that we are confident will effectively secure our forests and curtail activities that are inimical to the safety of lives and property and the territorial integrity of our nation. The North Central has never been this favoured in national reckoning. Yet our region stands to gain a lot more.

At this meeting, Ganduje commended the president for providing the enabling environment for the party and for also executing reforms that are positive, making the ruling party attractive for people to feel that APC was a party to join.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Oyelola Ashiru, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Water Resources, Prof. Joseph Utsev.

Others were former Governors Yahaya Bello, Tanko Almakura, Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger), Ahmed Wase, former deputy speaker, House of Representatives; Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, among others.

Opposition Coalition Mulls Its Options

Opposition coalition against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, has entered a new phase with the appointment of a two-term Senate President, David Mark, as its chairman.

Also, a  former Minister of Power and Steel and former governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke was appointed the chairman of a committee to determine whether to continue with existing political party.

At the same time, the immediate past Minister of Transportation and ex-governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi, was nominated to chair the committee to consider the registration of a new political party against the APC in the 2027 general election.

These details were disclosed by the convener of the League of Northern Democrats, Dr. Umar Ardo, after a meeting where they resolved to join the coalition of opposition against the APC.

In a communique signed by the chairman of the League of Northern Democrats, Ibrahim Shekarau and Ardo, they said, ‘’We resolved to support the National Opposition Coalition Group chaired by Senator President David Mark in driving the transitional politics towards the 2027 general election.’’

He also said the National coalition group against APC appointed two committees to decide whether to join any of the existing political parties and to register a new political party for the coalition to join.

Accordingly, Ardo said, “Dr. Liyel Imoke is to  chairs committee on whether to continue the coalition on  existing political party. Also, Rotimi Amaechi is to  chair the  committee whether to register a new party for the coalition exercise.”

On the League of Northern Democrats, Ardo explained that, ‘’We approved our constitution and minutes of previous meetings and directed the legal adviser to conclude the process of the registration of LND as an association.

‘’We resolved to contribute in the dialogue on either registering a new political party or fuse into an existing one.

‘’We resolved that our first option is to register a new party in order to accommodate many independent members of the larger established political parties who currently feel reluctant to move into a smaller party but who are willing to move out to form a new party.

‘’In the alternative, to fuse into an existing party as a primary and necessary alternative. We resolve to coordinate a meeting of a larger various northern groups as agreed a few weeks ago in the ACF meeting in Kaduna to solidify northern positions.

“We resolve to mobilise Northern Nigerians to pressure the government, particularly the NASS leadership, to uphold the provisions of the Constitution which they swore to do.

‘’To this end, we resolve to mobilise Nigerians to a civil resistance against the leaderships of NASS to force them to declare the seats of all the legislators in Delta and Kebbi States, who cross-carpeted to other political parties as stipulated by Sections of the constitution.

‘’We resolved to engage the 19 Northern governors on their seeming inertia to the terrible situation in the North – endemic poverty, state of destitution of our people, insecurity, unemployment, and the appalling economic crisis in the region, which we concluded is as a result of poor governance at the state and local government levels,” the communique stated.

Amaechi’s C’ttee Submits Report

Meanwhile, the Rotimi Amaechi committee of the opposition coalition has submitted its report, recommending the formation of a new political party with the name All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

A document sighted by ĚÇĐÄĘÓĆľ, and signed by Amaechi, titled: ‘’Justification for the Founding of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) and dated May 20, claimed that, ‘’The All Democratic Alliance (ADA) is envisioned not merely as a political party but as a national renaissance movement, deeply rooted in democratic idealism.”

On justice, and visionary leadership, the document stated that, “ADA offers a credible, people-centered alternative to existing political formations, aiming to unify all or most of the nation’s opposition groups and individuals and re-establish trust and common purpose amongst themselves.”

Discussing the strategic timing and political opportunity, the report stated that, “Rising public disillusionment with both ruling and opposition parties has created a political vacuum.

“ADA is uniquely positioned to capture the aspirations of patriotic elites, youths, professionals, and disenchanted voters. Offers a real alternative to the current political system and Channel the growing demand for national healing and competent leadership.”

Hinting at the guiding philosophy and ethical compass, it stated that, ‘’ADA is founded on moral clarity, drawing inspiration from the enduring symbolism of a Tree— representing: Strength and Stability, Wisdom and Knowledge, Growth and Renewal.”

With heritage and tradition, it stated that the party “seeks to redefine leadership in Nigeria based on vision, merit, ethical governance and public spirit.

‘’The Logo, Manifesto and Constitution encapsulate the symbolic power of the party, its Vision and Mission and Core Objectives, all outlining the ideological principles and values on which the party stands,” adding that, “The Motto of the party is Justice for All.”

In view of this, the committee stated that, ‘’The All Democratic Alliance is not just viable — it is imperative for Nigeria’s survival and renewal. Its founding principles, structure and vision reflect a strategic, moral and political readiness to contest and win the 2027 general elections.”

The Sub-Committee therefore urged the coalition to ‘’Adopt the registration of a new political party asits first approach to engaging the incumbent for the 2023-2027 transitional elections.

The report noted that the Sub-committee was constituted about two weeks ago to look at the feasibility of registering a new political party as a viable vehicle to successfully challenge the incumbent government in the 2027 general election.

‘’The Sub-committee met, discussed extensively on the subject matter and arrived at two resolutions. First, it formulated its arguments justifying the registration of a new political party as the best approach in successfully defeating the incumbent. Second, it recommends and provides a name, logo, manifesto and constitution of the new party.

‘’A new party serves as a common platform with a unified all opposition groups around a new vision and purpose, thus overcoming fragmentation and distrust among the diverse opposition groups;

‘’Public Perception of Authentic Change: Nigerians are more likely to support a new, purpose-driven party that symbolises a clean break from old brands.

‘’Moral High Ground: Attempting registration tests democratic institutions. If blocked (which is highly unlikely if a public approach is taken), it exposes government and INEC bias, thereby rallying public sympathy and international support;

‘’Legal and Political Leverage: Denial of registration offers grounds for judicial redress (e.g., writ of mandamus), strengthening the opposition’s case for electoral reforms;

‘’Confusion and Weakening of Incumbents: The exodus of credible opposition leaders to a new platform would destabilise existing parties (PDP, APC, NNPP, LP), creating internal turmoil;

‘’Mobilization Power: A new party can be built with broad coalitions of all critical opposition stakeholders from inception, avoiding legacy baggage and appealing to youth, independents and disenfranchised Nigerians;

‘’Narrative Control: A newly formed party can craft and own its political narrative and brand identity from scratch, unlike co-opting an existing one with historical liabilities;

‘’Symbolic Rebirth of Democracy: Represents democratic renewal and reawakening, offering a psychologically powerful alternative to politics-as-usual; and

‘’Testing Democratic Integrity: The process of registration challenges the fairness of INEC and promotes accountability and transparency in the system early enough before elections.

“Registering a new political party is not just a tactical maneuver – it is a bold strategic act that redefines the opposition’s purpose, unites diverse stakeholders, mobilises public sentiment, creates an authentic alternative to entrenched political forces and spontaneously galvanizes popular momentum. It is the clearest path to inspiring hope, energising voters and transforming Nigeria’s democratic future.”

•Charges members to build on gains of ongoing economic reforms

•Ojulari: Nation’s refineries’ production to rise from 1.5m to 1.9m barrels by end of 2025

Deji Elumoye in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has charged the new board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to bring the experiences of its members to bear on the ongoing efforts to transform the country’s economy.

Speaking while inaugurating the NNPC Limited Board at State House, Abuja, on Thursday, Tinubu said he selected the board members painstakingly to ensure quality leadership.

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Ojulari, said the team had met with industry stakeholders and set clear directions on how to improve various aspects of the company’s operations.

Tinubu told the new board, “When I started searching, it took a while to come up with the kind of character that you represent. You represent the best in the industry, and I have set goals for you.

“You have the reputation, resourcefulness and experience to help the country. It is a call to duty for you. I believe you are among the best the industry can offer.”

The president said the ongoing economic reforms had yielded results, with local and international acknowledgements.

According to him, “Nigeria has come of age. It is now more competitive and turning the corner, and with your highly respected team, I can relax and attend to other issues.

“Thank you for accepting the opportunity to serve your country and our dear country.”

Tinubu also told the board that the

volatility in the world’s economy will require looking inwards for solutions, and Nigerians will depend on them to reposition NNPC Ltd.

“Explore all options for a win-win situation for Nigeria. I am so proud of you and believe you will succeed,” he said.

Earlier, Minister of State, Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri, thanked the president for assembling the team he described as the best in Africa.

Lokpobiri stated, “I got calls from the whole of Africa, my colleagues in OPEC, saying that if this team does not deliver, Nigeria will have to import men from another planet to come and deliver the oil and gas sector in Nigeria.”

Chairman of the Board, Ahmadu Kida, thanked Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the country.

Kida said the new board would uphold the highest standard of leadership, courage, and integrity in delivering on the president’s mandate.

Ojulari said the team had already met with industry stakeholders to review operations and business relationships.

“We have had several meetings, and we have set a direction with the mandate that you have given us. We have commenced the journey with a bi-weekly meeting with stakeholders,” he said.

Ojulari stated that the management had started optimising various aspects of the company, including the turnaround maintenance of the refineries.

He said production had risen to 1.7 million barrels in two months, from 1.5 million barrels, with the target of reaching 1.9 million barrels by year-end.

“We will promise what we can deliver, and we will deliver on our promise,” he added.

Ojulari also said the president’s economic reform had sent the right signals to attract foreign direct investments.

He assured that NNPC Ltd would operate as a business.

Idris: Tinubu’s Reforms Initially Triggered Hardship, Now Yielding Measurable Outcomes /2025/05/21/idris-tinubus-reforms-initially-triggered-hardship-now-yielding-measurable-outcomes/ /2025/05/21/idris-tinubus-reforms-initially-triggered-hardship-now-yielding-measurable-outcomes/#respond Wed, 21 May 2025 04:19:52 +0000 /?p=1085137

•Says renewed hope agenda laying groundwork for nation’s economic rebirth

•Eno: Nigeria’s economic problems not president’s creation

Deji Elumoye and Olawale Ajimotokan in Abuja

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, yesterday, said though President Bola Tinubu’s reforms initially triggered hardship, they had started yielding measurable outcomes.

Idris insisted that the Renewed Hope Agenda, Tinubu’s signature programme, was laying the foundation for Nigeria’s economic renaissance through bold reforms, strategic investments, and inclusive policy innovations.

This was as the Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, hassaid Nigeria’s economic problems predated the administration of Tinubu, stressing that the president deserved national support to steer the country through the difficult times.

Speaking at the 2025 Nigeria Public Relations Week in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, Idris stated that the Tinubu administration policy direction had repositioned Nigeria for significant economic reforms, which were yielding visible results across critical sectors.

“Permit me to posit, with every iota of conviction, that the Renewed Hope Agenda is steadfastly paving the way for Nigeria’s economic renaissance,” Idris declared.

He urged public relations professionals to match the moment by strategically deploying persuasive, values-driven and inclusive communication mechanisms in galvanising the population, home and abroad, to participate in the reawakening of an economic giant.

Idris explained that the economic reset began on the first day of the inauguration of the Tinubu administration, with the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rates, describing the move as the bedrock of the nation’s economic transition or renaissance.

He stated that although the reforms initially triggered hardship, they had started to yield measurable outcomes through improved exchange rate stability, increased state revenues, revived local oil refining, and a strengthened fiscal position.

Ahead of the second anniversary of the administration, the minister said Nigerians were now witnessing a period of unprecedented investment in infrastructure, agriculture, security, and human capital.

He highlighted the landmark developments to include: N2.5 trillion being invested in road infrastructure in 2025, the highest in the country’s history; creation of new ministries for regional development and livestock, to accelerate regional economic growth and unlock billions in agricultural opportunities; and the launch of Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund), which had already benefitted over 300,000 Nigerian students in tuition and upkeep support.

Others, Idris said, were earmarking of N200 billion for economic assistance to nano businesses, outfits typically owned and operated by one or two persons, and are significantly smaller than micro businesses, and large manufacturers; direct investment of over $450 million in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure under the Presidential CNG Initiative; establishment of CreditCorp, allowing Nigerians to access credit for housing, healthcare, and other essential needs, among other milestones.

Idris stated, “Today, Nigeria is a vast construction site, with over N2.5 trillion worth of road infrastructure projects approved this year alone, the highest ever in Nigeria’s history.

“The government is linking cities through signature projects, such as the Lagos-Calabar and Badagry to Sokoto superhighways, and in all parts of the country.

“There are several other ongoing works as we speak. From the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries that have come back to life, to the approval of N80 billion for the reconstruction of the failed Alau Dam in Borno, to the progress on the construction of the Kano-Kaduna Standard Gauge Railway Line, no part of Nigeria has been left behind in this massive allocation of infrastructure investments under President Tinubu, who has now been described as ‘The Road Master’.”

He also highlighted other encouraging macroeconomic indicators, underlining the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for April 2025, recently released by the National Bureau of Statistics, which indicated that headline inflation rate for April stood at 23.71 per cent, representing a decrease of 0.52 per cent from the 24.23 per cent recorded in March 2025.

The minister said the indicators could only have happened because the president’s deliberate policy interventions gradually being made manifest, were well-nurtured and paying off.

He urged public relations professionals to take their place as central agents of national renewal by helping in shaping and projecting Nigeria’s rising economic profile to the world.

“Nigeria is on the rise. It has attracted over $50 billion in new foreign direct investment commitments, diaspora remittances are at $21.9 billion, and Nollywood contributed over N730 billion to GDP. These are not just statistics. They are stories waiting to be told effectively, professionally, and patriotically,” he said.

Idris  also reiterated his ministry’s commitment to strategic and coordinated national messaging through the newly-conceived National Strategic Communication Framework (NSCF).

Eno: Nigeria’s Economic Problems Not Tinubu’s Creation, Seeks Support for Him

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno said Nigeria’s economic problems preceded the Tinubu administration. Eno said the president deserved national support to steer the country through difficult times.

Speaking to newsmen on Tuesday after meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at State House, Abuja,  Eno described Tinubu’s first two years in office as “wonderful” and marked by determined efforts to address inherited challenges.

According to him, “President Tinubu didn’t create the problems we are in right now. For me, I believe he is doing his best, and he should be supported to finish strong.”

With his own administration nearing the two-year mark, the governor highlighted achievements across key sectors in Akwa Ibom State, including education, healthcare, road infrastructure, and rural development.

He said, “When you come to Akwa Ibom, you’ll find we are working across the board—from schools to hospitals, roads, and markets. We are delivering tangible results.”

Eno stated that while the first phase of his administration focused on grassroots development, the next two years would usher in a wave of major infrastructure projects to position the state as an economic and tourist hub.

“We’re now moving into super infrastructure. We want to make Akwa Ibom a tourist destination—and we are well on our way,” he stressed.

*Urges Nigerians to use their diversity for nation’s stability, rapid development

*Banters with Fayemi, Obi

* VP Vance, Zelenskyy attend Papal installation

*Pontiff seeks unity for divided church, vows not to be ‘autocrat’

Deji Elumoye and Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, joined other world leaders to attend the inauguration mass of the new head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, at the Vatican City.

Tinubu, who arrived Rome on Saturday, felicitated the new Pope on his ascendancy to Catholic Papacy.

At the end of the inauguration mass, Tinubu, like other world leaders, took his turn to shake hands and exchange pleasantries with the Pope.

Tinubu told newsmen afterwards that he felt good being part of the inauguration of the new Pope.

He said his visit was “consistent in the true sense of unity in diversity and I am greatly honoured. We have to continue to work on it. It’s a work in progress for the sake of our country and the continent as a whole”.

On the side-lines of the ceremony, he met with Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 poll, Peter Obi, and former Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who tweeted on his verified X handle, @aonanuga1956, said, “Fayemi sighted President Tinubu, where he sat with other leaders and asked Obi to follow him to pay homage to the Nigerian leader.  Obi agreed.

“On getting to the president, Fayemi broke the ice between Obi and Tinubu. He said, Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.

“President Tinubu, ever quick-witted, responded:  â€˜I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.’ The President’s response cracked up Obi, who agreed with the President.

“Obi said: â€˜Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation’. Peter Obi and Fayemi are staunch Catholics and Papal knights.”

Tinubu had earlier on arrival in Rome on Saturday been hosted to dinner by Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro.

In a post on his verified official X handle, the president said their dialogue was marked by a spirit of fraternity and a shared vision for peace, mutual respect, and global solidarity.

He said Nigeria deeply valued the Vatican’s longstanding goodwill and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to interfaith dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation in what he described as an increasingly polarised world.

Tinubu wrote, “Upon my arrival in Rome ahead of the solemn Mass marking the beginning of the Pontificate of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, I was warmly received and graciously hosted to dinner by His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State to the Vatican.

“Our dialogue was marked by a spirit of fraternity and a shared vision for the future, focusing on common values such as peace, mutual respect, and global solidarity.

“I expressed Nigeria’s deep appreciation for the Vatican’s longstanding goodwill and reaffirmed our commitment to promoting interfaith dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation in an increasingly polarised world.

“As always, Nigeria remains a nation open to friendship, grounded in faith, and committed to building bridges of understanding across the world.”

When he received some members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Tinubu urged Nigerians to use their diversity for the country’s stability and rapid development.

The president, according to a release by Onanuga, issued a stirring call to leaders at all levels to work for the betterment of the citizenry.

Tinubu, a Muslim, said, “If we use our diversity not for adversity but for prosperity, the country’s hope is stability and progress.”

He said being the president of Nigeria when a new Pope was inaugurated in Rome. as historic.

The Catholic bishops were part of President Tinubu’s delegation to Pope Leo XIV’s installation mass on Sunday.

Earlier, Archbishop of Owerri and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, thanked Tinubu for facilitating their visits to the Vatican to bury the late Pope Francis and witness the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.

Ugorji said the development signalled a new era of a more robust relationship between the president and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

He said, “You are always there for us. Now that you have come to the Vatican, whenever we have our conference in Nigeria, we will also invite you, and we look forward to interfacing with you just as you were able to do with the Holy Father.”

Archbishops Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja, Alfred Martins of Lagos, and Mathew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, attended the meeting with the president.

Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV formally began his reign yesterday, with several world leaders, including Tinubu, United States Vice President J.D Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, among others, in attendance.

Other world leaders at the ceremony were the presidents of Israel, Peru and the prime ministers of Italy, Canada and Australia. German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, and European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, also graced the occasion.

European royals, including Spanish King Felipe and Queen Letizia, also took their place in the VIP seats near the main altar, a Reuters report said.

Calling for unity and vowing to preserve the Catholic Church’s heritage as well as not rule like “an autocrat”, the Pope said as leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Roman Catholics, he would continue Francis’ legacy on social issues, such as combating poverty and protecting the environment.

After a first ride in the popemobile through an estimated crowd of up to 200,000 people at St. Peter’s Square and surrounding streets, Leo was officially installed as the 267th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church at an outdoor Mass.

Well-wishers waved US and Peruvian flags, with people from both countries claiming him as the first pope from their nations.

Born in Chicago, the 69-year-old pontiff spent many years as a missionary in Peru and also has Peruvian citizenship.

Robert Prevost, relatively unknown on the world stage, only became a cardinal two years ago, and was elected Pope on May 8 after a short conclave of cardinals that lasted barely 24 hours.

He succeeded Francis, an Argentine, who died on April 21 after leading the Church for 12 often turbulent years during which he battled with traditionalists and championed the cause of the poor and marginalised, the Reuters report added.

In his sermon, read in fluent Italian, Leo said he would continue Francis’ legacy on social issues, such as combating poverty and protecting the environment.

He vowed to face up to “the questions, concerns and challenges of today’s world” and, in a nod to conservatives, he promised to preserve “the rich heritage of the Christian faith,” repeatedly calling for unity.

Crowds chanted “Viva il Papa” (Long Live the Pope) and “Papa Leone”, his name in Italian, as he waved from the open-topped popemobile ahead of his inaugural Mass.

Vance, a Catholic convert who clashed with Francis over the White House’s hardline immigration policies, led a US delegation alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also Catholic.

Vance briefly shook hands with Zelenskiy at the start of the ceremony. The two men last met in February at the White House, when they clashed fiercely in front of the world’s media.

Zelenskiy and Leo were to have a private meeting later on Sunday, while Vance was expected to see the pope on Monday.

In a brief appeal at the end of the Mass, Leo addressed several global conflicts. He said Ukraine was being “martyred”, a phrase often used by Francis, and called for a “just and lasting peace” there.

He also mentioned the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and said people in the Palestinian enclave were being “reduced to starvation”. Among those in the crowds were many pilgrims from the US and Peru.

Since becoming pope, Leo had signalled some key priorities for his papacy, including a warning about the dangers posed by artificial intelligence and the importance of bringing peace to the world and to the Church itself.

Francis’ papacy left a divided Church, with conservatives accusing him of sowing confusion, particularly with his extemporaneous remarks on issues of sexual morality, such as same-sex unions.

Saying he was taking up his mission “with fear and trembling”, Leo used the words “unity” or “united” seven times on Sunday and the word “harmony” four times.

“It is never a question of capturing others by force, by religious propaganda or by means of power. Instead, it is always and only a question of loving, as Jesus did,” he said, in apparent reference to a war of words between Catholics, who define themselves as conservative or progressive.

Conservatives also accused Francis of ruling in a heavy-handed way and lamented that he belittled their concerns and did not consult widely before making decisions.

Referring to St. Peter, the 1st Century Christian apostle from whom popes derive their authority, Leo said, “Peter must shepherd the flock without ever yielding to the temptation to be an autocrat, lording it over those entrusted to him. On the contrary, he is called to serve the faith of his brothers and sisters, and to walk alongside them.”

Leo shook many of their hands at the end of the ceremony, and hugged his brother Louis, who had travelled from Florida.

As part of the ceremony, Leo received two symbolic items: a liturgical vestment known as a pallium, a sash of lambswool representing his role as a shepherd, and the “fisherman’s ring”, recalling St. Peter, who was a fisherman.

The ceremonial gold signet ring is specially cast for each new pope and can be used by Leo to seal documents, although this purpose has fallen out of use in modern times. It shows St. Peter holding the keys to Heaven and will be broken after his death or resignation, Reuters said.
