The management of Accion Microfinance Bank has said it has disbursed over N350 billion in loans to more than 500,000 customers over the last 20 years, while maintaining a repayment rate of over 99 per cent.

The bank disclosed this during its 20th anniversary press conference held yesterday in Lagos, where members of the board and executive management highlighted the institution’s contributions to financial inclusion, SME growth, responsible lending, and digital banking innovation in Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Taiwo Joda, described the bank as a pioneer in providing access to finance for underserved entrepreneurs.
According to him, “In 20 years, we have impacted 500,000 customers and disbursed over N350 billion. We are a pioneering microfinance bank looking at the bottom of the pyramid, granting access to capital for micro, small and medium enterprises.”

He explained that the bank supports both underbanked entrepreneurs and those without formal banking relationships, stressing that access to capital has remained central to the bank’s operations.

The Board Chairman, Christian Ruehmer, said the bank was established 20 years ago to bridge the financial inclusion gap affecting millions of hardworking Nigerians.
“We saw many hardworking Nigerians who had dreams to improve their lives but were not bankable. This was exactly the reason why Accion Microfinance Bank started,” he stated.
Ruehmer added that despite technological advancements, human interaction remained critical in banking operations.

“In banking, we differentiate between unwillingness and inability to pay. If somebody comes back with inability to pay, we are here for them and we help them. That is not technology primarily, but human presence,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, Kazeem Bisiriyu, said the bank had adopted robust risk management systems and customer engagement strategies to reduce loan defaults.

“We maintain high-level relationship management. We don’t just give customers money; we engage them, monitor usage and ensure funds are used for the intended purpose,” he said.
The Chief Commercial Officer, Stephen Olalere, said the bank’s lending strategy focused heavily on business financing rather than personal consumption.

“Ƶes are catalysts for economic growth. We don’t just give loans; we educate customers, analyse their businesses, and ensure they borrow within their repayment capacity,” he said.

JustMarkets Top 5 Assets to Trade in 2026 /2026/01/20/justmarkets-top-5-assets-to-trade-in-2026/ /2026/01/20/justmarkets-top-5-assets-to-trade-in-2026/#respond Mon, 19 Jan 2026 23:02:00 +0000 /?p=1167213

As the world markets continue into a new cycle that sees them plunging into much trouble and uncertainty, the year 2026 beckons to be one that is ridden with high uncertainty and volatility in terms of geopolitical and macroeconomic trends. Although the year may pose various threats to traders, it also comes along with unparalleled opportunities that may be leveraged to achieve trading success through various trading assets set to display notable volatility trends in the year 2026.

From long-term fundamentals to trading dynamics, these five key assets on JustMarkets are set to continue to be at the forefront in trading in 2026.

1. Gold (XAU/USD): The Ultimate Macro-Driven Asset

The gold price in 2025 reached $4,500 per troy ounce, and it continues to be one of the most traded assets world-wide. Gold is extremely sensitive to changes in the levels of inflation, interest rate forecasts, geopolitical events, and currency exchange rate movements. The recent years have shown the ability of the gold market to provide an extremely strong bullish momentum, as well as intraday momentum.

CHART

The relevance of the market of gold in the year 2026 specifically stems from the fact that the environment surrounding the economy of the world is facing challenges associated with growth, debt, and the policies of monetary easing. Despite the falling inflation rate in the economy, the real interest rates are also expected to be pressured downward, which has traditionally translated to favorable market conditions for the price of gold. The factor of geopolitics uncertainty and tensions between specific countries also adds to the significance of the market of gold.

For traders, the market offers favorable conditions because of its high volatility regime with adequate liquidity.

2. Silver (XAG/USD): Volatility with a Dual Personality

Silver often overshadows gold, but its performance in 2025 significantly outperformed its main competitor. The precious metal briefly reached $85, making it one of the best-performing assets in 2025. While silver, like gold, is sensitive to monetary policy and market sentiment, it also enjoys strong industrial demand related to energy transition technologies, electronics, and manufacturing.

CHART

This dual nature makes silver one of the most volatile and fastest-growing precious metals and trading instruments overall. In 2026, as global growth expectations fluctuate and industrial cycles remain uneven, silver will experience sharp directional movements and prolonged periods of volatility, but will fundamentally maintain a growth trend similar to gold.

For traders seeking high volatility, silver offers even greater percentage swings than gold, making it a powerful tool for well-managed strategies, both scalping and holding positions for multiple days.

3. Oil (WTI & Brent): Trading Supply, Politics, and Policy

Oil is still among the market-sensitive commodities. The change in OPEC+ production levels, global events affecting major oil-producing nations, as well as changes in global demand can cause prices to surge within a matter of hours.

CHART

Turning the focus on the outlook for the year 2026, it seems likely that the oil market will face well-supplied conditions. However, this will not mean extremely small degrees of volatility. Events surrounding Venezuela represent yet another key source of uncertainty. Changes within US policies regarding Venezuela, the export of oil, and the political leadership of the country could represent important influences on the levels of supply, especially when the focus shifts towards the heavier grades. Yet, the possibility of a substantial recovery looks very unlikely.

Even in highly saturated markets, surprise disruptions, production policy changes, or geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, can cause sharp price moves. Conversely, macroeconomic growth slowdowns or money market cycles may exert pressures on demands, thereby leading to highly two-sided markets.

4. US Stock Indices (Dow 30, S&P 500, Nasdaq): Liquidity and Trend Potential

US indices continue to be key trading assets in global trading activity. The Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq reflect US economic performance, as well as global risk appetite, capital flows, and technological leadership, primarily driven by the AI boom.

CHART

In 2026, stock markets are likely to face divergent forces. On the one hand, monetary easing is supporting valuations, while slowing economic growth, declining interest in AI, and political uncertainty are increasing volatility and the risk of a deeper sell-off. This combination often leads to strong moves, deep corrections, and renewed all-time highs.

Indices offer unrivaled liquidity, clear technical behavior, and the ability to express macroeconomic views without the risk associated with individual stocks, making them important tools for both short-term and position traders.

5. EUR/USD: The World’s Most Traded Currency Pair

EUR/USD remains the benchmark for forex trading. Its deep liquidity, tight spreads, and technical clarity make it a favorite among professional traders. More importantly, the euro reflects the balance between the world’s two most influential central banks: the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank.

CHART

As interest rate differentials narrow and fiscal dynamics shift on both sides of the Atlantic, there’s every reason to believe EUR/USD will experience prolonged and powerful trending phases, punctuated by strong reactions to economic data and central bank signals.

In 2026, shifts in growth expectations, inflation trajectories, and political developments in both regions will keep this pair highly active, making EUR/USD a preferred option for traders who value stability, transparency, and adaptability across all trading styles.

Perfect Assets to Trade in 2026

These five markets unite their relevance on a global stage, and the responsiveness of these markets to macroeconomic and geopolitical events. Markets traded in gold, silver, oil, US indices, and the currency pair EUR/USD include the combination of markets most traders seek: deep liquidity, clear structure, and meaningful volatility.

On the trading platform, these instruments excel because of the optimal trading conditions offered, ensuring effective active trading. Tight spreads, fast execution of orders, as well as high leverage of up to 3000, enable traders to react swiftly to key market drivers, such as central bank statements or inflation figures, as well as geopolitical events.

  • Historic regulatory clearance for RoboMed™ confirms safety and efficacy of robotic surgery for Nigerian patients

Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has granted regulatory approval for the Toumai robotic surgical system, confirming its safety and efficacy for use in Nigerian patients. The approval makes Nigeria the first country in West Africa to clear a robotic surgery platform—a rigorous regulatory milestone that opens the door to advanced surgical care for over 400 million people in the region.

The approval follows West Africa’s first robotic surgeries, performed by Dr. Obi Ekwenna, RoboMed™ CEO, at NISA Premier Hospital on November 22, 2025. Both patients went home in 12 and 48 hours—a fraction of the recovery time required after traditional open surgery.

“This approval reflects NAFDAC’s thorough evaluation of the technology’s safety profile. Nigerian patients can trust that this platform meets the highest regulatory standards. They no longer need to travel abroad for world-class surgical care—we have brought it home,’ said Dr. Obi Ekwenna, RoboMed™ CEO.

The Toumai system, made by Shanghai MicroPort MedBot, gives surgeons precision beyond the human hand through 3D visualization and four robotic arms. For patients, this means smaller incisions, less pain, and faster healing.

“MicroPort MedBot is honored to partner with RoboMed™ in bringing the Toumai robotic surgical system to West Africa,” said Dr. Altug Ergin, First Vice President of MicroPort Overseas Ƶ. “This historic approval validates our shared vision that advanced surgical robotics should reach patients everywhere. Nigeria’s leadership will inspire healthcare innovation across Africa and other lowand middle-income countries.”

“This is proof that Africa can lead in healthcare innovation. We have built the foundation to scale—this is just the beginning,’ said Efosa Eluma, Chief Operating Officer.

“Robotic surgery delivers precision that the human hand cannot match. Our patients experienced it firsthand: faster recovery, less pain, quicker return to their lives,’ said Dr. lyore James, Chief Medical Officer.

“We built NISA so Nigerians would no longer need to seek care abroad. Today, that vision is real,” said Dr. Ibrahim Wada, OON, NISA Premier Hospital Founder.

RoboMed™ will expand through hospital partnerships across Nigeria and the region. RoboMed Academy will train local surgeons t o perform these procedures independently. A public launch event is planned for Abuja in January 2026. Kemet Automotive, a Pan-African electric vehicle (EV) company, has announced a major step in its mission to redefine mobility across Africa. The company has unveiled its updated design direction and confirmed its move into production, supported by more than 10,000 pre-orders from customers across the continent.

“Kemet is building vehicles that inspire pride and deliver real performance,” said Nissi Ogulu, Co-CEO and Co-Founder. “We want Africans to see that world-class innovation can come from here — and lead globally.”

Led by Ogulu, Kemet’s design approach—called Functional Sculpting—prioritises durability, emotional connection, and timeless form. The company is engineering vehicles built for Africa’s varied terrains while reflecting the identity, culture, and aspirations of the people who will drive them.

Kemet’s mission extends beyond vehicle production. Its strategy focuses on: Building thousands of jobs across manufacturing, supply chain, and technology, driving industrialisation through localised production and capability building, strengthening the African economy by reducing reliance on imported vehicles, advancing sustainability with clean energy transportation that reduces emissions and creating ownership of Africa’s future in global automotive innovation

Kemet aims to become one of the continent’s first globally competitive automotive manufacturers — a demonstration of what is possible when Africa builds for itself.

Following the debut of its first vehicle design, Kemet has secured 10,000+ pre-orders, signalling strong consumer confidence and accelerating EV adoption across Africa. This traction reflects the continent’s shift toward sustainable mobility and the growing demand for reliable, locally built transportation solutions.

To support long-term growth, Kemet Automotive has formed a strategic partnership with Africa Design School (ADS) in Cotonou, Benin. Together, they will: Train emerging designers and engineers, create new career pathways in mobility, design, and technology and build a pipeline of innovation grounded in African identity

This collaboration strengthens regional design capability and positions Africa to shape its role in the global EV industry.

With Africa expected to reach 1.4 billion urban residents by 2050, demand for sustainable transportation will expand sharply. Kemet’s localized production model positions the company to lead this multi-billion-dollar opportunity.

As Kemet advances toward production, the company is engaging investors and partners committed to building clean, connected mobility solutions for African markets.

Black Friday: GrabrFi Unveils Borderless US Account to Boost Nigerians’ Global Shopping Power /2025/11/20/black-friday-grabrfi-unveils-borderless-us-account-to-boost-nigerians-global-shopping-power/ /2025/11/20/black-friday-grabrfi-unveils-borderless-us-account-to-boost-nigerians-global-shopping-power/#respond Wed, 19 Nov 2025 23:20:00 +0000 /?p=1147416

Sunday Ehigiator

With the 2025 Black Friday sales season set to unleash billions of dollars in global transactions, digital finance platform GrabrFi says it is equipping Nigerians with a borderless financial tool designed to eliminate the long‑standing hurdles associated with international payments.
The company announced that its offering — a free, secure US checking account paired with a virtual and physical Mastercard — allows Nigerians to shop globally without foreign transaction fees, declined payments, or unfavourable currency conversions. The solution, the company said, is tailored not only for Black Friday deals but also for international subscriptions, software payments, remote work earnings and holiday travel.

According to GrabrFi, Nigerians have for years faced steep financial obstacles when attempting to shop or transact abroad. These include excessive transfer fees — such as paying a $50 fee on a $200 payment — currency losses due to poor exchange rates, and card restrictions that often cause international transactions to fail. As global online retailers prepare for heavy Black Friday traffic, these challenges become even more limiting for consumers and freelancers.

said it resolves these barriers by offering users a US-based financial infrastructure backed by Grabr Inc.’s decade-long global presence. Unlike traditional digital wallets, the platform provides a fully functional US checking account, complete with a routing number, account number and Mastercard debit card, enabling users to spend and receive USD without restrictions. Incoming Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfers are free, allowing remote workers and individuals to retain the full value of payments sent from abroad.

The company added that its system has been designed to support the “holiday economy,” enabling tourists visiting Nigeria to top up their accounts in dollars and make naira transfers instantly within the app. Local vendors can also receive payments seamlessly, while Nigerians saving for Black Friday or Detty December can store funds in USD to hedge against inflation and avoid losses from volatile exchange rates.

emphasised that its platform prioritises security, using advanced encryption and protocols to protect user data and funds — an essential assurance during the high-volume transaction period that accompanies Black Friday and year-end festivities. It said its recent funding round reflects investor confidence in its expansion plans across Nigeria and Africa.

Signing up, the firm noted, takes minutes. New users can download the GrabrFi app, provide a valid Nigerian government-issued ID — including NIN, passport, driver’s licence or voter’s card — and receive immediate access to their US account and virtual debit card. The platform also allows users to buy dollars in-app, convert USD to naira when needed, and spend globally without interruptions.

The company said its US debit card ensures frustration-free international payments for software, subscriptions and business expenses during the November sales rush. It also encouraged users to take advantage of its secure Virtual Card for global e-commerce, especially during peak shopping. For the Detty December festive season, GrabrFi is rolling out features to support easier payments for tourists and local merchants.

In another major update, GrabrFi announced that it is introducing support for stablecoins to give users more flexible, faster and value-preserving transaction options.

The company urged Nigerians to take advantage of the borderless platform ahead of the Black Friday rush, saying it offers maximum savings and unrestricted global purchasing power. Interested users can within minutes by .

Atley Adejola Weighs In on the Rising Demand for Destination Events /2025/11/20/atley-adejola-weighs-in-on-the-rising-demand-for-destination-events/ /2025/11/20/atley-adejola-weighs-in-on-the-rising-demand-for-destination-events/#respond Wed, 19 Nov 2025 23:01:00 +0000 /?p=1147438

Sunday Ehigiator

The global appetite for destination events is surging, and Atley Adejola, CEO of THE ATLEYS & The Honeymooner, believes this shift is more than just a passing trend. It’s a transformation in how people approach life’s most cherished celebrations. From weddings and milestone birthdays to corporate retreats and intimate gatherings, an increasing number of people are opting to celebrate away from home, blending festivity with adventure.

Atley points out that the growing demand for destination events is largely driven by younger generations (Gen Z and millennials ) who prioritize meaningful, curated experiences over traditional large-scale gatherings.

“People want their celebrations to be personal and intentional,” she explains. “A destination event allows for a more intimate guest list, a unique setting, and an experience that truly reflects the celebrant’s vision.”

Cost efficiency is another factor. While destination events might seem pricey at first glance, many find that a well-planned getaway with a smaller group can be more economical than hosting a large event at home. This approach also eliminates logistical stress and provides a more controlled, exclusive atmosphere.

Social media also plays a significant role. Stunning destinations and unique experiences are highly shareable, and many celebrate in places that become social media-worthy backdrops.

With over a decade of expertise in curating exceptional travel experiences, Atley Adejola and THE ATLEYS stand at the forefront of this movement. As Atley puts it, “Destination events are not about replacing tradition, but about expanding what’s possible and making every celebration unforgettable.”

Sunday Ehigiator

The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) has announced the launch of the Sugarcane Outgrower Development Programme (SODP), a flagship initiative aimed at accelerating local sugar production and driving Nigeria closer to self-sufficiency.

In a statement, the Executive Secretary/CEO of NSDC, Mr. Kamar Bakrin, noted that the programme is a key component of the Nigeria Sugar Master Plan (NSMP II) and has been designed to scale up local sugarcane production, reduce the nation’s reliance on imports, and stimulate inclusive economic growth, particularly within rural communities.

“The SODP is designed to boost local sugarcane cultivation, reduce Nigeria’s dependence on sugar imports, and create opportunities for inclusive economic growth by integrating outgrower farmers into the industry’s supply chain. This programme will complement the output of existing large-scale sugar estates and help close the national supply gap,” Bakrin stated.

Bakrin further emphasised that this is a pioneering initiative in Nigeria’s sugar sector.

He said, “For the first time, a structured outgrower development programme will formally integrate farmers at all levels into the national sugar value chain. This campaign is about reaching every stakeholder, from large-scale operators to smallholder farmers, and ensuring that everyone has a fair opportunity to contribute to Nigeria’s journey towards self-sufficiency in sugar production.”

Speaking on the programme framework, the Head of Out-Grower Management at the NSDC, Mrs. Lade Offurum, explained that the SODP will engage three key categories of farmers, agribusinesses and commercial farmers cultivating 50–500+ hectares, farming cooperatives, who can apply as organised clusters of between 30 and 50 hectares, and individual farmers or friends willing to jointly farm clusters of 30+ hectares.

AREET: Dangote Refinery, PENGASSAN Crisis Threatens Nigeria’s Economic Stability, Energy Security /2025/10/01/areet-dangote-refinery-pengassan-crisis-threatens-nigerias-economic-stability-energy-security/ /2025/10/01/areet-dangote-refinery-pengassan-crisis-threatens-nigerias-economic-stability-energy-security/#respond Tue, 30 Sep 2025 23:02:00 +0000 /?p=1128841

Sunday Ehigiator

The Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics (AREET) has raised alarm over the escalating standoff between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the management of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, warning that the prolonged strike could trigger an economic and energy crisis capable of reversing Nigeria’s fragile recovery.

The crisis, which erupted over the suspension and dismissal of workers at the refinery following allegations of sabotage, has already drawn the backing of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), amplifying the scale of the disruption.

AREET in a statement by its Chairman, Dele Kelvin Oye described the situation as a “severe asymmetric shock” to energy security and macroeconomic stability, stressing that the strike threatens to plunge the country into fuel shortages, inflationary spikes, capital flight and loss of investor confidence.

The group noted that the Dangote Refinery, with a nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, was intended to end decades of reliance on imported refined petroleum products and anchor economic stability.

“Any disruption to its operations,” it warned, “could force Nigeria back to costly fuel imports, widen the trade deficit, deplete foreign reserves and put fresh pressure on the foreign exchange market.”
AREET pointed out that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had only recently reduced the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) from 27.5 to 27 percent, citing easing inflation and improved external reserves of about $42 billion.

Those fragile gains, it cautioned, “could quickly evaporate if refinery operations remain crippled, leading to fuel scarcity, rising transport and power costs, a fresh wave of inflation, and possible reversal of monetary policy.”

The knock-on effects, the group said, would include capital flight, exchange rate depreciation, higher borrowing costs, and GDP downgrades.

The think-tank further warned that public allegations of sabotage against a flagship private investment like the Dangote Refinery could severely undermine Nigeria’s investment climate.
On the social front, AREET warned that fuel shortages could stoke public discontent, raise transportation costs, and ignite wider protests that may escalate into a national political crisis.

Such unrest, it cautioned, “could further constrain government’s capacity to respond effectively, especially with campaigns for the 2027 general election already gathering momentum.”

It also recommended a forensic investigation into the sabotage allegations, a temporary suspension of dismissals until due process is followed, and a coordinated communication strategy to reassure citizens and investors of continuity in fuel supply.

Premium Power Solutions (PPS), has said that it will on October 6, 2025, host the graduation ceremony of the first cohort from its Technician Academy in Lagos, marking a milestone in its mission to bridge Africa’s technical skills gap and empower young people.
The academy, launched as part of PPS’s social responsibility vision, provides free, year-long, hands-on training in electrical and mechanical technology.

Trainees also receive personal protective equipment, professional toolkits, and preparation for the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity trade test; all at no cost.
PPS Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Ejiroghene Udu, said the initiative reflects the company’s broader commitment to community impact and sustainable workforce development.
“Energy at PPS means more than electricity; it’s about unlocking potential and dignity for our youth,” Udu said. “This academy is our pledge to close the skills gap and empower a new wave of talent, especially young women, to shape Africa’s energy future.”
The first graduating class is historic not only for its technical achievement but also for the inclusion of female trainees, breaking barriers in a male-dominated sector.

Exploring Lakowe Lakes, Where Greenery, Serenity, and Hospitality Meet /2025/09/19/exploring-lakowe-lakes-where-greenery-serenity-and-hospitality-meet/ /2025/09/19/exploring-lakowe-lakes-where-greenery-serenity-and-hospitality-meet/#respond Thu, 18 Sep 2025 23:51:00 +0000 /?p=1125108

As Lagosians gear up for another unforgettable ‘Detty December’, the search for serene yet stylish escapes is already underway. Nestled on the tranquil outskirts of the city, Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Estate offer far more than manicured greens and luxury cottages; it is a sanctuary where nature, serenity, and world-class hospitality intertwine. In this report, Sunday Ehigiator recounts his three-day staycation, capturing the essence of Lakowe’s charm through its lush landscapes, warm people, and unforgettable experiences.

The drive to Lakowe was like a gentle peeling away of layers of noise. Each kilometre put more distance between me and the restless pulse of the city of Lagos, its blaring horns, the hurried footsteps, and the constant hum of commerce. By the time my car turned off the main expressway and glided into the manicured entrance of Lakowe Lakes Golf & Country Estate, I felt as though I had stepped through a portal.

Here, the air was different; cleaner, sharper, touched with the faint scent of wet grass and pine. The gates swung open with an almost ceremonial calm, and the security detail greeted me with warm smiles, professional yet friendly, as if to say: “Welcome to a different Lagos”.

Check-in was seamless, almost suspiciously so for someone used to the occasional chaos of Nigerian hospitality. Within minutes, I was ushered into a world where nature, luxury, and thoughtfulness danced together. But the real magic began when I unlocked the door to my two-bedroom lakefront cottage and found a simple but powerful message waiting for me:

“Dear Sunday Ehigiator, It is our pleasure to welcome you to Lakowe Lakes. We are delighted to have you with us. May your stay be filled with relaxation, comfort, and memorable experiences, surrounded by the beauty of nature.

“Should there be anything you require, please do not hesitate to let us know. We wish you a truly exceptional stay, with warm regards from the Lakowe Lakes Hospitality Team.”

It felt personal, as though Lakowe had not just prepared a room, but prepared an embrace. That’s when I knew; I wasn’t here to merely stay, I was here to experience.

Cottage by the Lake

The cottage was a storybook come alive. Balinese-inspired in design, it stood like a quiet guardian of serenity by the bank of an artificial lake spanning 54 hectares, its waters so still that they mirrored the sky.

Through the sliding glass doors in both the living room and the bedrooms, the lake was not just a view; it was a companion. Even from my bed, I could see its silvery shimmer, hear the faint ripple of water, and watch the choreography of birds cutting across the horizon.

There’s a difference between quiet and serenity. Quiet is the absence of noise, but serenity is the presence of peace; Lakowe had mastered serenity. The songs of birds pierced through the stillness, not as interruptions but as soft notes in an orchestra directed by nature itself.

At night, when I slid the balcony door open, the air came alive with cricket chirps and the gentle lap of water against the bank. It was in these moments, lying in bed with nothing but moonlight spilling across the room, that I felt how deliberately Lakowe had been designed; not just as accommodation, but as a sanctuary.

Flavours at ‘The Restaurant on 18’

If the cottage was the soul of my stay, then food was its heartbeat. ‘The Restaurant on 18’ was where every day began, peaked, and ended.

Imagine waking to a breakfast spread that moved seamlessly between continents: the fluffiest pancakes that could rival an American diner, steaming jollof rice that carried the signature spice of home, and omelettes that could be folded into Parisian café culture without anyone raising a brow.

Lunch was an even greater indulgence, a buffet that felt less like dining and more like a culinary festival. There was efo-riro, and egusi, thick and hearty, laced with snail, shaki, and abo-idi, sitting proudly beside pepper-chicken, goat-meat, and some creamy pastas; pepper soup that warmed the throat with each sip, beside a delicate platter of sushi that seemed to wink mischievously at its West African neighbour.

Dinner was no less magical: tender steaks, fresh seafood, vegetable medleys, and desserts that demanded to be photographed before being devoured.

But what elevated the dining was not just the food; it was the hospitality. Staff moved with the ease of people who had been trained to serve but who had also been gifted with natural warmth. Joy, Samson, and Bunmi broke no sweat as they tend to visitors’ stomach infrastructure with delight, while also helping with pictures.

Plates never sat empty for long, glasses were filled before you realised they were half gone, and every meal felt like a carefully choreographed performance where the guest was the star.

Sports & Recreation: Where Energy Meets Serenity

Lakowe is not just about stillness; it is also about motion. At the Revivo Sports Centre, I discovered that play here is not a child’s business, but an adult’s path to joy.

Ping Pong matches echoed with laughter and competitive cheers, swimming sessions were punctuated with splashes of delight, and lawn tennis courts throbbed with the rhythm of rackets meeting balls in the evening glow.

The Bonfire Arena added a communal flavour to it all, hosting games of volleyball under skies painted pink and orange at sunset. For cycling enthusiasts like me, Lakowe offered smooth trails that wound through its 308-hectare expanse, so well planned they felt like they were designed by artists rather than engineers.

Each ride was a moving gallery of greenery, trees whispering overhead, lakes shimmering beside the path, and cottages peeking from between lush foliage.

For quieter moments, there were indoor board games that rekindled the simple joys of childhood. But the crown jewel of recreation was the golf experience; a course spread across 90 hectares, designed by PGA professional Robert O’Friel. Even if you’re not a golfer like me, walking the expanse is therapy in itself; if you are, then it is nothing short of a dreamscape for swings and putts.

Fishing, Boating & Reflection

Water has a way of stilling the heart, of whispering to the restless parts of the soul that they can take a seat and breathe. At Lakowe, the lakes were not merely ornamental; they were living, breathing characters in the story of my stay.

One afternoon, fishing rod in hand, I found myself perched at the edge of the dock, eyes scanning the lake’s glassy surface for a ripple. At this juncture, I must place a caveat, ‘fishing is not a sport of impatience; it is one of communion with the water, with silence, with one’s own thoughts’.

For me, even though I failed to catch the game, it became a meditation exercise. The sun was gentle warmth on my skin, the breeze a quiet kiss across my face, and the occasional splash of fish breaking the water’s surface reminded me that life teemed beneath the calm.

Then came the pontoon boat ride, gliding across the lake as though on silk, under the professional sailing of Captain Alaba. The boat cut through the water with such gentleness that ripples expanded like lazy rings on a drum.

Sitting back with the wind in my face, and chilling sounds of Omalay, and Jonny Drill blazing from the speakers, I realised Lakowe had designed every experience not to rush you but to slow you down, to unspool the knots wound tightly by city life.

It was not about speed, but presence. Every turn of the lake revealed new shades of green-palms swaying, flowering shrubs nodding politely at the water, and herons darting overhead like ballet dancers. By the time the ride was over, I understood why people describe Lakowe as “an escape.” It is not an escape from, but an escape into.

In-room Spa & Wine Bar Moments

No true retreat is complete without a touch of indulgence, and at Lakowe, this language is spoken with effortless fluency. One evening, after hours of cycling through leafy trails and gliding across the lake, a gentle chime at my door announced the spa team, led by the gifted hands of Masseuse Mercy, ready to transform my evening into pure relaxation.

The deep-tissue massage that followed was not just treatment, it was ritual. As the therapist’s hands worked across my back, kneading away stress I didn’t even know I was carrying, I melted into the bed.

Outside, I could faintly hear birds’ trading songs and the occasional splash of water, but inside, my body was being taught the meaning of surrender. Every knot untied, every muscle released, until I was nothing but breath and gratitude.

Later that night, I found myself at the Wine Bar, glass in hand, sipping something that lingered with notes of oak and fruit. The bar had the kind of lighting that made conversations easier and silences comfortable. It was intimate without being intimidating, lively without being loud. Here, I met other guests; strangers who quickly became companions in laughter. It struck me how Lakowe created not only spaces for solitude but also for connection.

Olamide: The Heart of Hospitality

Great destinations are defined by great people. And for me, Lakowe’s spirit was embodied in one person: Olamide, my concierge. From the moment she greeted me with a smile wide enough to rival the morning sun, I knew my stay was in good hands.

Hospitality is not about reciting scripted lines; it is about anticipating needs, about carrying warmth in your voice and grace in your actions. Olamide had this in abundance. She curated my activities with the precision of a conductor, ensuring that no moment was wasted yet no moment felt rushed.

Whether arranging my fishing trip, guiding me to the golf course, or checking in to ask, “Sir, have you had lunch? She made me feel less like a guest and more like a valued friend.

By the end of my stay, Olamide had become more than a concierge; she had become part of the memory itself. And it reminded me that while architecture and scenery build the bones of a place, people are the heartbeat.

The Emerald Luxe Weekend Pass

In my ‘aproko’ nature, I scooped around during my stay in the cottage and found that Lakowe Lakes is gearing up to host what promises to be one of the most exclusive lifestyle escapes of the year: ‘The Emerald Luxe Weekend Pass’.

Framed as an Emerald Invitational to escape, unwind, and celebrate in style, the three-day affair is designed to blend luxury, leisure, and world-class entertainment into one unforgettable experience.

The package includes two nights of luxury accommodation, all meals, and selected alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks flowing throughout the weekend. But beyond these essentials, it is the carefully curated schedule of events that has already stirred excitement among lifestyle enthusiasts.

The festivities, which arguably should signal the beginning of ‘Detty December’ activities in Lagos, kick off on Friday night, September 26, 2025, with Verse & Vibe, a soulful blend of spoken word and live music headlined by IBQUAKE.

The following day, Saturday, September 27, raises the tempo with the Poolside Pulse Party featuring Folagade Banks and Layi Wasabi, an energetic mix of comedy, music, and Lagos flair. The evening culminates in a glittering Royale Gala Dinner, hosted by Kie Kie, where fine dining and A-list entertainment converge spectacularly.

On Sunday, September 28, the mood softens with a Laid-back Brunch, a relaxed and indulgent close to the weekend’s celebrations.

Guests will also have access to an exciting menu of creative and recreational activities, including Sip & Paint, Caricature Drawing, Pottery & Candy Making, Pontoon Boat Rides, Knock-Around Tennis, and Archery; together valued at over ₦400,000 per person.

For anyone seeking a rare blend of greenery, serenity, and indulgence, the Emerald Luxe Weekend Pass is shaping up not just as an event but as the lifestyle highlight of 2025.

The Architecture of Excellence

Lakowe is not a place that happened; it is a place that was intentionally crafted. At every corner, you feel the planning, the precision, and the pursuit of excellence.

The roads are wide, smooth, and tree-lined; they are not just thoroughfares but experiences in themselves. Cycling or driving along them is like moving through a curated postcard.

Also is the ‘Driving Range’; before stepping onto the grand course, the driving range is where you practice your swing, where beginners flirt with the sport, and veterans refine their art.

More than a building, the Lakowe is a community hub. Perfect for team bonding, it combines lodging, meeting spaces, and an event centre into one harmonious design. Here, corporate meets leisure in ways that are not forced but fluid.

For me, the cottages are my personal favourite. Inspired by Balinese architecture, they combine modern luxury with natural intimacy. Every line, every finish screams attention to detail.

Lakowe might not call itself a resort in the strictest sense, but its resort-like character is undeniable. From recreation to architecture, it is a place where excellence isn’t an accident; it is the culture.

Golf: The Beating Heart of Lakowe Lakes

At the centre of it all lies golf; the sport that birthed this estate, the rhythm around which everything else orbits. Spread across 90 hectares, the course designed by Robert O’Friel is a masterpiece of undulating greens, strategic bunkers, and fairways framed by shimmering lakes.

Even for a novice, walking the course is awe-inspiring. Each hole feels like a chapter, each swing a sentence, each putt a punctuation mark. The grass is manicured with such precision that it could rival carpets in five-star hotels. Golfers spoke of it not just as a course but as a pilgrimage. And standing there, watching the sun set behind the trees while the final balls rolled across the green, I understood.

The City Beyond a City

What makes Lakowe remarkable is not just what it offers but how it feels: a city within a city. Spread across 308 hectares, it holds within it worlds; forests, lakes, cottages, lodges, sports arenas, restaurants, bars, and pathways that weave them together. It is Lagos reimagined; planned, intentional, serene.

Yet, beyond the luxury, there is an ethos of simplicity. It is not about overwhelming grandeur but about thoughtful excellence. Every flower planted, every path curved, every building positioned feels like part of a deliberate choreography.

Lakowe whispers a truth that is rare in Lagos: life can be unhurried, yet fulfilling.

Why Lakowe Stays With You

As I packed my bags on the final morning, sliding the balcony door open one last time to watch the lake breathe under the sunrise, I realised something: Lakowe is not a destination you simply visit; it is a place you carry with you.

It lingers in the taste of buffet meals shared with laughter. It hums in the rhythm of a bicycle wheel rolling down smooth paths. It rests in the warmth of Olamide’s ever-ready smile.

Lakowe Lakes is more than greenery, more than serenity, more than hospitality; it is a reminder that even within the restless chaos of Lagos, there can be a place where peace is not an illusion but a daily reality.

And as I left, one thought comforted me: this was not goodbye. With the Emerald Luxe Weekend Pass coming up later in September, there is already a perfect excuse to return; to rediscover Lakowe’s magic, to celebrate, and to live the luxe life all over again.

Strengthening Healthcare Delivery through Rotary International, DHL Nigeria’s Strategic Partnerships /2025/09/18/strengthening-healthcare-delivery-through-rotary-international-dhl-nigerias-strategic-partnerships/ /2025/09/18/strengthening-healthcare-delivery-through-rotary-international-dhl-nigerias-strategic-partnerships/#respond Wed, 17 Sep 2025 23:50:00 +0000 /?p=1124757

As part of their shared commitment to improving lives, Rotary International District 9111 and DHL Nigeria recently demonstrated the power of corporate and community collaboration with the establishment of the Sickle Cell Centre, Otta, a facility designed to strengthen healthcare delivery and expand access to specialised treatment for sickle cell patients in Ogun State. Sunday Ehigiator reports

Sickle cell disease (SCD) remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing public health challenges. The genetic blood disorder, which alters the normal shape of red blood cells into sickle-like crescents, shortens their lifespan and obstructs blood flow, leading to fatigue, frequent infections, delayed growth, severe pain, and a host of other complications.

Globally, Nigeria shoulders the highest burden, with an estimated 150,000 newborns diagnosed every year, while about 25 per cent of Nigerian adults carry the sickle cell trait.

Despite the scale of this challenge, access to specialised care in the country remains limited. However, for patients in Otta, Ogun State, a new dawn arrived on June 28, 2025, when the Sickle Cell Centre, Otta, was officially commissioned at the Otta General Hospital.

The facility, donated by Rotary International, District 9111, with the support of strategic partners like DHL Nigeria, represents not just a brick-and-mortar structure, but a beacon of hope for thousands of families grappling with the disease.

A Collective Vision for Change

The project, officially launched by Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, embodies what can be achieved when philanthropy, corporate responsibility, and community service align.

Governor of Rotary District 9111, Rtn. Henry Akinyele explained that the motivation behind the centre was the urgent need to provide better healthcare for the growing number of Nigerians affected by sickle cell disease.

“Through this donation,” Akinyele said, “Rotary hopes to provide adequate healthcare response and ultimately improve sickle cell care across the country. The facility offers a full range of services and equipment accessible to the public.

“This means that in the years ahead, there will be a significant increase in preventive screening and treatment for those already living with the disease. From our findings, over one thousand people visit the facility monthly, and they will now be able to get the care they need.”

Akinyele was joined by the Immediate Past District Governor, Rtn. (Dr.) Oluwole Kukoyi and other club leaders visited DHL Nigeria’s Lagos office to express appreciation for the logistics giant’s support.

DHL’s Strategic Role

The partnership between Rotary and DHL was instrumental in bringing the project to life. Senior Director, Commercial, DHL Express Nigeria, Olaniran Fafowora, highlighted that DHL’s ₦5 million donation was part of the company’s long-standing commitment to supporting community well-being, aligned with its global purpose: “Connecting People, Improving Lives.”

Managing Director, DHL Express Nigeria, Muyiwa Adeseyoju, further emphasised the significance of the partnership: “Our support for the Rotary Sickle Cell Centre in Otta reflects DHL’s commitment to addressing pressing health challenges that affect Nigerian families.

“While we have supported various health causes in the past, this marks our first direct donation toward a specialised facility for sickle cell care. It demonstrates our belief that healthier communities are essential for a sustainable future.

“In line with our purpose of Connecting People and Improving Lives, DHL Express Nigeria will continue to support and partner with organisations that aim to make the world a better place.”

Beyond Bricks and Mortar

The Otta Sickle Cell Centre is more than just a building; it is an avenue for specialised treatment, preventive screening, counselling, and community education.

With Rotary’s philanthropic backbone and DHL’s corporate social responsibility muscle, the facility is already becoming a hub of hope. For patients and families long accustomed to travelling distances for specialised care, it represents relief, dignity, and a promise of better outcomes.

In a country where public-private partnerships are often underexplored, the collaboration between Rotary and DHL demonstrates the power of strategic alliances in addressing health challenges.

It also underscores a vital truth: strengthening healthcare delivery in Nigeria requires more than government effort; it takes a community of actors driven by empathy, purpose, and vision.

With the burden of sickle cell disease still high in Nigeria, the Otta Sickle Cell Centre stands as a living reminder that progress is possible when goodwill and strategy meet.

Mystical Powers Awaken in Teaser for Nigerian Historical Fantasy ‘Osamede’ /2025/07/28/mystical-powers-awaken-in-teaser-for-nigerian-historical-fantasy-osamede/ /2025/07/28/mystical-powers-awaken-in-teaser-for-nigerian-historical-fantasy-osamede/#respond Mon, 28 Jul 2025 04:12:00 +0000 /?p=1107618

Sunday Ehigiator

A first glimpse into the mystical world of the 1897 Benin Empire has been unveiled with the release of the teaser for Osamede, a Nigerian historical fantasy epic from Gold Lilies Productions.

The teaser follows the transformation of young Osamede, an orphaned girl, into a superhuman guardian of the ancient Aruosa stone. Touted as “the chosen one,” Osamede’s journey is portrayed as an ode to womanhood and African identity. The film’s tagline reads: “She’s the chosen one. Her power awakens. An ode to womanhood and African identity.”

Directed by James Omokwe, known for his acclaimed work on Showmax’s Itura, Cheta M, and Ajoche, the film brings to life the legendary Benin Kingdom through rich visuals and culturally rooted storytelling. Ivie Okujaye Egboh takes on the lead role, supported by a cast that includes Lexan Aisosa Peters, William Benson, Tosin Adeyemi (My Father’s Shadow), and veteran filmmaker Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen.

Kenneth Gyang, director of Netflix’s Òlòtūré, praised the film after its screening at the Cannes Marché du Film in May, calling it “a beautiful film.”

Executive producer Lilian Olubi described Osamede as a celebration of African mythology and womanhood. “This teaser captures the essence of what we’re bringing to global audiences. It’s African mythology told through the lens of epic fantasy, celebrating both our heritage and the power of African women,” she said.

Set for theatrical release in the fourth quarter of 2025, Osamede aims to set a new benchmark for African cinema by blending historical authenticity with stunning visual effects to create a story with global resonance. The film will be distributed by Nile Entertainment Group, headed by Moses Babatope, known for brokering international film deals with Disney, Netflix, Prime Video, and Warner Bros.

“Osamede sets a new standard for African cinema,” said Babatope. “Rarely does one find such a film that honours our cultural heritage while delivering the epic storytelling that international audiences crave.”

“Entrepreneurship Found Me at 14,” Rabiu Hassan Lawal Reveals. A Story of Drive Beyond Years /2025/07/03/entrepreneurship-found-me-at-14-rabiu-hassan-lawal-reveals-a-story-of-drive-beyond-years/ /2025/07/03/entrepreneurship-found-me-at-14-rabiu-hassan-lawal-reveals-a-story-of-drive-beyond-years/#respond Wed, 02 Jul 2025 23:53:00 +0000 /?p=1099263

By Sunday Ehigiator

While most 14-year-olds are still navigating their teenage years, Rabiu Lawal was already navigating the world of business. With a vision far beyond his age and a drive rooted in creativity and passion, Lawal’s entrepreneurial journey began in the classrooms and corridors of Funtaj International School, Abuja. And it hasn’t stopped since.

“I’ve always had an eye for art,” he says. “Back in Year 9, I enjoyed drawing and designing. That interest soon grew into something bigger.” Inspired by his love for visual creativity, he started buying plain T-shirts, printed them with his own unique designs, and began selling them to his schoolmates — turning his talent into profit.

The big break came during the school’s annual fun fair, a vibrant event that brought together students from different schools across the city. Rabiu set up a stand and showcased his custom shirts. The response was overwhelming. “That fun fair changed everything,” he says. “It gave my brand visibility. People started asking for more. It was the turning point.”

But Lawal wasn’t just building a brand — he was building a movement.

At 15, he took a bold leap and co-organised a football tournament with few friends. What started as a small, community-based game quickly gained momentum. Today, that tournament has grown into the iconic Golazo Festival. Abuja’s most popular youth festivals, known for celebrating sports, music, entrepreneurship and youth innovation. Thousands attend every year, and it’s become a symbol of what young people can achieve when given a platform.

Driven by a desire to inspire others, he went on to establish the Inspire Youth Development Foundation, a non-profit organisation that empowers young people through entrepreneurship, leadership training and charitable initiatives.

The foundation encourages the younger generation to take ownership of their futures — by building, creating and giving back.

Lawal believes that education is much more than just academics. “School isn’t just about learning mathematics or preparing for exams,” he explains. “It’s a space where students should be encouraged to explore, build confidence, connect with people from all walks of life, and discover what drives them. That’s how you build character — and a future.”

His mission is clear: to instill the spirit of entrepreneurship in young people early. Through every initiative, from custom shirts to the Golazo Festival, Rabiu is proving that youth isn’t a barrier — it’s a launchpad.

“It’s good to start early,” Lawal says. His journey is a shining example of just how far that early start can go.

Sunday Ehigiator

The 2025 edition of the African Workforce Summit (AWS) was recently held in Lagos with a call to address Nigeria’s unemployment crisis through provision of practical interventions, such as skill acquisition and various forms of investment.

Over two days, the event played host to a diverse audience of early-career professionals, entrepreneurs, employers, and development stakeholders.

The summit, designed to equip young professionals with actionable tools and strategies, featured a range of hands-on activities such as CV revamp stations, live interview simulations, LinkedIn profile consultations, professional headshots, and personalised career guidance sessions.

One of the standout features was a pitch competition, where emerging entrepreneurs presented their business ideas for a chance to win a $1,000 seed grant.

Speaking at the event, the Convener of AWS, Joel Moses Babatunde, emphasised the summit’s focus on workforce development. “Not everyone will become an entrepreneur, and that is perfectly fine,” he stated.

“Some will build their futures through employment, and it is our responsibility to ensure they have the skills, tools, and leadership mindset to succeed.”

The summit also hosted a series of panel discussions and masterclasses addressing key themes such as workplace leadership, innovation, corporate culture, mental wellness, and strategic career development.

Notably, a workshop led by performance coach Olakunle Soji-Oke explored the habits and mindset required for high-impact professional growth, while HR strategist Emmanuel Faith offered expert guidance on salary negotiations.

Sycamore Group served as the summit’s headline sponsor. Its Co-founder, Onyinye Okonji, reiterated the company’s commitment to youth empowerment.

“We believe platforms like AWS are vital to cultivating a more resilient, skilled, and employable generation,” she said. “Solving the unemployment challenge requires investment in those building solutions.”

Among the most engaging sessions was a multigenerational dialogue on workplace dynamics, featuring Gen Z and Millennial professionals sharing perspectives.

Another highlight was a panel on startup resilience in Africa, moderated by Kayode Okikiolu, with insights from Onyinye Okonji, Ngozi Nwabueze, and Akpor Ikogho.

The session addressed how African founders are navigating funding gaps, regulatory challenges, and infrastructure limitations.

As the summit drew to a close, its overarching message was clear: Africa’s youth possess the talent to transform the continent, but they must be supported with structured opportunities, strategic mentorship, and enabling environments.

As Wema Bank One-day MD/CEO Initiative Receives Global Commendation /2025/06/30/as-wema-bank-one-day-md-ceo-initiative-receives-global-commendation/ /2025/06/30/as-wema-bank-one-day-md-ceo-initiative-receives-global-commendation/#respond Sun, 29 Jun 2025 23:17:00 +0000 /?p=1097881

From a dream pitched in a short video to sitting in the highest office of one of Nigeria’s most innovative banks, Chiderije Mbah’s journey as One-Day MD/CEO is more than a feel-good story; it is a symbol of what happens when institutions invest in the future, today.Sunday Ehigiator writes

In a world where longevity influences success and sustainability steers the course of the future, it becomes imperative that the leaders of today empower the leaders of tomorrow. Today’s children become tomorrow’s leaders, and the legacies we build today will only thrive if we empower the children to carry on the torch.Such is the vision that has fueled Wema Bank’s drive for nurturing the youth since 1945, empowering them with the resources they need to build the right future and providing guidance for them as they journey towards adulthood. From creating the Royal Kiddies Account for children ages 0-12 to launching the ALAT Xplore App for teenagers ages 13-17, and its various youth-focused initiatives, Wema Bank has been intentional in empowering young Nigerians to thrive. One of the most thoughtful of such initiatives pioneered by Wema Bank, is the Wema Bank One-Day MD/CEO initiative, launched as a “Children’s Special” in line with the Bank’s 80th anniversary celebration.

Commemorating the 2025 global celebration of Children’s Day, Wema Bank, on 22nd May 2025, launched the One-Day Wema Bank MD/CEO initiative, a special campaign curated by the Bank to celebrate children as the leaders of tomorrow. This campaign, a first-of-its-kind in the Nigerian banking industry, provided an exclusive opportunity for a child to become the Managing Director/CEO of Nigeria’s oldest indigenous bank, Wema Bank, just for May 27, 2025.

First-of-its-kind

The One-Day Wema Bank MD/CEO initiative, a first-of-its-kind in the Nigerian banking industry, called on Nigerian children to showcase their potential for leadership and career success in the banking industry, by uploading video submissions where they share their ideal role in the bank and why they deserve to win. The children rose eagerly to the occasion, donning Wema Bank’s brand colours with pride and captivating viewers with heartwarming presentations that were nothing short of inspiring. Dozens of entries later, the numbers spoke. 12-year-old ChiderijeMbah emerged winner, receiving outstanding commendations for his embodiment of the role of MD/CEO. Thus began the journey to his exclusive experience as Wema Bank’s one-day MD/CEO.

As the world commemorated Children’s Day on May 27, Chiderije looked forward to one of the greatest responsibilities a 12-year-old could ever envisage, being the MD/CEO of an 80-year-old bank—for a day. As the rains mimicked the proverbial “showers of blessings”. Chiderije began his stint as Wema Bank’s one-day MD/CEO. From his grand reception at the Wema Bank Head Office Facility in Lagos to one-on-one meetings with top executives of the Bank, Nigerians across the world applauded in awe as Wema Bank set an unrivalled precedence by walking the talk in empowering children to be the leaders of tomorrow.

Chiderije’s bold debut was followed by a deeply symbolic moment: the official handover of the MD/CEO insignia from Wema Bank’s substantive Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Moruf Oseni, who commended the young leader’s courage and foresight. In a surprise move that left everyone in awe, Mr. Oseni gave out his one-day salary for May 27 to the 1-day Wema Bank MD/CEO, Chiderije Mbah, encouraging him to keep up the great work and work hard towards truly becoming an MD/CEO in the near future. Mr. Moruf Oseni further shed light on the Bank’s motivation for annually commemorating Children’s Day in such a grand and intentional manner.

According to Mr. Oseni, “As a Bank, our mission is to empower lives through innovation, and this is a mission we are committed to seeing through from cradle to grave, as encapsulated in our creed, ‘With You, All The Way’. This is why Children’s Day is so important to us. Every great man, woman or even institution, was once a child, so to forge the leaders of tomorrow, we need to begin today. Today, we are reminded of the theme of our 80th anniversary celebration, ’80 years of impact, a future of possibilities’. Our impact over the past 80 years has been indelible, but now we look ahead to a future of possibilities, and what is a future of possibilities without the children? 8 decades from now, it is these children that will carry on the legacy we have built today. This is why this initiative is so important”.

“We can all agree that Wema Bank has been walking the talk over the past 8 decades, thinking out of the box, and creating innovative ways to empower children for the right future. But today, in commemoration of Children’s Day 2025, we are taking things a step further and giving the leaders of tomorrow a platform to lead today. As Chiderijewill be carrying out my duties for today, it is only right that he earns my one-day salary today. The Wema way is ‘work hard, reward hard’, and as MD/CEO for today, Chiderijewill experience it first-hand. It is our hope that this will inspire not just him, but every other child to put in the good work and make us proud. Happy Children’s Day, from Wema Bank”, Oseni concluded.

Thoughtful gesture

Expressing his profound gratitude for the thoughtful gesture, ChiderijeMbah promised to make Wema Bank proud, adding “Thank you very much Sir, for trusting me with this great opportunity, and for always looking out for the children. I am proud to be a part of the Wema Bank family, the bank that not only supports our parents in raising us the right way but also empowers us with the tools and guidance that we need to become financially smart as we grow older. Today has shown me that the sky is just the starting point for every child, and I am excited to spread the word to other children. I look forward to learning from you, the experts, and getting more insights into what it means to be a leader, especially for an organisation like Wema Bank, that has stood strong for 80 years.Thank you again for giving me your time and trusting me with this important responsibility. I will make Wema Bank proud!”

Chiderije’s first act as MD/CEO was to announce four new special rewards aimed at empowering Nigeria’s youth and in his words, “help more children and teenagers save, learn, and grow their dreams through Wema Bank”. The exciting rewards for children and teenagers include free ALAT Xplore Personalized Debit Cards for all teenagers between May 27 to June 30, 2025, N2,000 cashback for every new Royal Kiddies Account (ages 0–12) opened from May 27 to June 30, an extra 1% interest rate on all balances in existing and new Royal Kiddies and ALAT Xplore accounts between May 27 to June 30, and free 1GB of data for teens who register on the ALAT Xplore app from May 27 to June 30.

As Children’s Day came to an end, a sense of pride and fulfillment filled the hearts of thousands; from the Mbah family whose 12-year-old son got to sit at the helm of Wema Bank’s affairs for a day to other parents across the world who saw the possibilities their children could achieve with dedication, the children inspired to dream beyond limits and among others, the Bank that believed in the potential of a 12-year-old to lead an 80-year-old institution. The tales of Wema Bank’s one-day MD/CEO initiative reverberated for days into weeks, as Chijeride’s story was beautifully transformed, forever. Life would go on, but his experience as Wema Bank’s one-day MD/CEO would remain permanently etched in his mind and journey.

Returning to school

Chiderije Mbah, the bright 12-year-old who won hearts nationwide as Wema Bank’s One-Day Managing Director/CEO, returned to school on Monday, June 16, 2025, to a grand welcome brimming with smiles and applauses from students and teachers alike. The JSS 3 student aiming for School Head Boy had lived the dream of many at the tender age of 12, reminding everyone that true leadership begins from childhood. Given the honour of addressing the school, Chiderije shared insights from his experience as Wema Bank’s one-day MD/CEO, beaming with smiles as he recounted the events of the day and the lessons learnt.

“Being the One-Day MD/CEO of Wema Bank has changed how I see the future. It has taught me responsibility and the value of big dreams. I met lots of important people, learnt how much work goes into running an organisation as powerful as Wema Bank, and I saw how dedicated the people were to making the dream work and how delicate the role of leadership is. Coming back to school now makes me want to study even harder so I can do more amazing things in life and hopefully become MD/CEO, not just for one day but for many more years”, Chiderije said.

TheSchool’s Principal,Mr. Irhiemi Emmanuel, highlighted how Chiderije’s feat has inspired the entire school, proving that with the right values, children can achieve anything. “Our school is proud to have one of our own show such maturity and excellence at a young age. We hope his story reminds every child here that leadership is possible when you combine discipline and ambition”, Mr. Emmanuel said.

As classmates openly admired and commended Chiderije’s confidence, his class teacher, Mr. AkinkunmiAkinniyi, added, “Chiderije has always been brilliant and curious, but it’s obvious that this experience has given him new confidence. He’s always been outspoken and driven and I hope this experience makes him even more determined to focus on his studies so that one day he can truly be an MD/CEO. I believe he can do it”.

The One-Day MD/CEO initiative is part of Wema Bank’s broader suite of youth-focused solutions which include the Royal Kiddies Account for children aged 0–12 and the ALAT Xplore App for teenagers aged 13–17; both of which help parents instill smart financial habits in their children from an early age while empowering young users with tools for saving, budgeting, and learning.

Chiderije’s journey is a beautiful reminder that the future belongs to those who believe in it early and Wema Bank remains committed to walking that journey alongside every young Nigerian. Founded in 1945 and currently celebrating 80 years of impact, Wema Bank has consistently demonstrated its people-first values by engaging with Nigerians at every life stage. The Wema at 80 Children’s Day Special has drawn widespread praise for its authenticity, creativity, and commitment to building future leaders—not just in words, but in action.

Saraki: We’re Rebuilding PDP for 2027, Future /2025/06/28/saraki-were-rebuilding-pdp-for-2027-future/ /2025/06/28/saraki-were-rebuilding-pdp-for-2027-future/#respond Sat, 28 Jun 2025 04:19:27 +0000 /?p=1097479

Sunday Ehigiator

er Senate President and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Bukola Saraki, yesterday, cautioned that the main opposition party risks collapse if urgent steps are not taken to resolve its leadership rifts and regain unity before the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on ARISE News Channel, Saraki, who currently heads the PDP’s reconciliation and convention committee, admitted the party was navigating one of the most precarious periods in its history.

Despite expressing confidence that the PDP could still recover, warning however, that the party was yet to witness the full scale of its internal turmoil.
“The worst may not even have come yet,” Saraki said. “We could see more defections, governors, senators, and if we don’t address these issues immediately, we risk not having a viable platform to contest the next elections,” he added.

Central to the party’s troubles is a prolonged dispute over the rightful occupant of the position of National Secretary, a legal and procedural controversy that recently prompted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reject official party communication not signed by the current recognized secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

“INEC has made it clear: any letter not signed by the recognised secretary is invalid. That poses a real threat to our ability to hold a legal NEC or convention,” Saraki explained.

As a result, the much-anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting originally scheduled for Monday has been shelved in favor of an expanded stakeholders’ caucus, a move aimed at sidestepping legal pitfalls.

“We have to be careful,” Saraki emphasised. “We can’t afford a situation where aspirants win primaries and then get disqualified because of internal technicalities.”

Amid ongoing factional disputes, reports of further defections continue to loom large.

The recent reconciliation between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his estranged political mentor, now FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, that was brokered by President Tinubu. has only added fuel to the fire, prompting speculation that more high-profile PDP leaders could jump ship.
“We expect more defections,” Saraki admitted.

“But we take some consolation in knowing the PDP is still strong at the grassroots. The loyalty there is deep, but leadership decisions are threatening that strength.”

He said many defections are not due to widespread dissatisfaction with the party, but rather decisions made by political elites without broad consensus.

“These are top-down moves. Many grassroots members remain committed to PDP and are asking why their leaders are abandoning the party that built their careers.”

Saraki did not mince words about the wider implications for Nigeria’s democracy. If the PDP, the country’s largest opposition party, cannot stabilise, he warned, the nation risks slipping toward a dangerous political imbalance.

“If PDP fails, Nigeria edges closer to a one-party state,” he said. “And that would be a disaster for democracy.”

He urged all stakeholders. within the party and across the democratic spectrum, to recognize the high stakes and commit to internal reforms, legal compliance, and inclusive leadership decisions.

Despite the gloom, Saraki believes the party still has time, barely, to reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Thankfully, this is happening in 2025, not 2026. We have a small window to regroup. We must use it wisely.”

He also called for the emergence of a new generation of PDP leaders and said the upcoming convention must serve as a platform to inject fresh energy into the party’s leadership.

“This is not just about resolving today’s issues. It’s about building for the future. The next convention must not be business as usual, we must bring in new, younger faces who represent the future of this party.”

Saraki ended on a note of cautious optimism, reiterating that while the PDP’s challenges are serious, they are not insurmountable.

“This is a defining moment. If we stay united, follow due process, and put the party’s interest first, we can rebuild. But we must act, now.”

Iran, Israel Trade Air Attacks as Conflict Enters Second Week /2025/06/21/iran-israel-trade-air-attacks-as-conflict-enters-second-week/ /2025/06/21/iran-israel-trade-air-attacks-as-conflict-enters-second-week/#comments Sat, 21 Jun 2025 01:35:47 +0000 /?p=1095050

Sunday Ehigiator with agency report

Israel has launched strikes on dozens of targets in Iran, including missile production sites, and Iran fired a barrage of missiles that hit near industrial facilities in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba and the northern city of Haifa, as the conflict between the two sides entered its second week.

An Iranian nuclear scientist was killed yesterday morning following an Israeli strike in Tehran, according to the Israeli public broadcaster Kan.

The news followed reports from the Iranian media saying that a residential building in the capital’s central Gisha district was hit by a drone strike.
Israel has killed several nuclear scientists since it started attacking Iran on June 13, according to Al Jazeera.

A hospital in Tehran was hit in a separate Israeli missile strike, the third such medical facility damaged in the past eight days, Iran’s health ministry was quoted by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) as saying. There were no immediate reports of casualties from the hospital strike, but six ambulances were damaged, the ministry said.

Despite the attacks, thousands of Iranians took to the streets of Tehran following yesterday’s prayers to denounce Israel and the US for the deadly attacks in the country.

In the northwestern province of Kermanshah, a medical clinic was also hit, leaving it completely damaged, according to Press TV.
Both Iran and Israel have been exchanging allegations of targeting medical facilities, which is prohibited by international humanitarian law.
In a statement, Israel’s Defence Minister Israeli Katz said he has instructed the military to intensify attacks on “symbols of the regime” in Tehran, aiming to destabilise it.

“We must strike at all the symbols of the regime and the mechanisms of oppression of the population, such as the Basij [militia], and the regime’s power base, such as the Revolutionary Guard,” Katz said.

Earlier yesterday, at least seven people were lightly injured after Iranian missile strikes hit Beersheba, the largest city in the Negev desert in southern Israel, according to Israeli media.

The attack temporarily shut the city’s central rail station and damaged several buildings including the Microsoft office located inside a technology park, which is also near an Israeli army military telecommunications branch.

After air raid sirens sounded later yesterday, Israeli media reported there were potential impacts in Tel Aviv, Beersheba and Haifa. At least 23 people were injured in Haifa, according to Israeli emergency service, Magen David Adom.

“The south of Israel is more sparsely populated, and the one missile that we could see landed before the beginning of business hours, so there were no people in the offices, presumably,” Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Amman, Jordan said.

Against the backdrop of deadly exchanges, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in the Swiss capital, Geneva, ahead of a meeting with his French, German, British and European Union counterparts.

Before Israel launched its assault on Iran on last week, Tehran was engaged in diplomatic talks with the United States in an attempt to end the long-running dispute over its nuclear programme.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff had planned to meet Araghchi in Oman on June 15, but the meeting was cancelled after Israel attacked.

In an appearance at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Friday, Araghchi said the Israeli attacks were a “betrayal” of diplomatic efforts.

“We were supposed to meet with the Americans on 15 June to craft a very promising agreement for peaceful resolution of the issues fabricated over our peaceful nuclear programme,” said Araghchi.

“It was a betrayal of diplomacy and unprecedented blow to the foundations of international law,” he said.

Ahead of the Iran-Europe talks, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the only way to end the conflict is for Israel to stop its air attacks.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that Ali Shamkhani, a close adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,  who was seriously wounded in an Israeli attack a week ago, was now in stable condition after round-the-clock efforts of doctors.

“I am alive and ready to sacrifice myself,” Tasnim quoted Shamkani as saying in a message.

LAPO Microfinance Bank has revealed that about 70 per cent of Nigerian households lack access to affordable loans for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure.

The bank revealed this at a recent workshop where it presented findings from its WASH Market Research Survey, held recently at the bank’s headquarters in Maryland, Lagos.

In her opening remarks, the Managing Director of LAPO Microfinance Bank, Cynthia Ikponmwosa, emphasised the institution’s resolve to bridge the financing gap in Nigeria’s WASH sector through innovative loan products.

According to her, “Access to clean water and safe sanitation is not only a basic human right but a catalyst for economic productivity, education, and women’s empowerment. Through our WASH loan program, LAPO MfB is enabling households to invest in infrastructure that transforms lives and protects future generations,” she said.

In his address, Head of Research and Ƶ Development at LAPO MfB, Evbuomwan Efosa, presented critical insights from the research, which was conducted across six states representing Nigeria’s geopolitical zones: Anambra, Edo, Kano, Lagos, Nasarawa, and Taraba.

The study covered 1,500 households and 600 WASH-sector SMEs and employed a mixed-methods approach comprising surveys, interviews, and reviews of local and international WASH financing literature.

In his remarks, Senior Account Partnership Manager at Water.org, a strategic partner to LAPO MfB on its WASH initiative, Gilbert Okpono, noted that, “This partnership underscores our shared values of improving lives and commitment to environmental stewardship by providing equitable opportunities.”

Lekki Freeport Terminal: Repositioning Nigerian Maritime Sector for Growth /2025/06/11/lekki-freeport-terminal-repositioning-nigerian-maritime-sector-for-growth/ /2025/06/11/lekki-freeport-terminal-repositioning-nigerian-maritime-sector-for-growth/#respond Tue, 10 Jun 2025 23:27:00 +0000 /?p=1091368

Lekki Free Terminal continues to put the wind in the sails of its operation through consistent deployment of technological innovations and strategic collaborations that have helped to drive progress, writes Sunday Ehigiator

With a focus on capturing regional growth by connecting global trade and infrastructure development, Lekki Freeport Terminal is efficiently bridging the supply chain gap in trade between Nigeria and the rest of the world. For a maritime sector grappling with infrastructure development, obsolete ports, and shallow draughts, the emergence of LFT in the Nigerian maritime sector has solidified the country’s position as a maritime hub, featuring expanded berths and terminals that can accommodate large vessels, as well asa modern port equipped with state-of-the-artfacilities. All these factors are enhancing connectivity to international markets and driving economic growth, with the presence of CMA-CGM, Maersk, COSCO Shipping, ONE, and ZIM, leading shipping lines that further solidify the terminal’s role as a key player in global trade.

Operational Excellence as Progress Driver

Lekki Free Terminal continues to put the wind in the sails of its operation through consistent deployment of technological innovations and strategic collaborations that have helped to drive progress. With a remarkable 40 per cent year-on-year growth in throughput volume for 2025, the terminal’s capacity and quality of service delivery as a preferred gateway for Nigeria’s import and export tradewere further solidified. Thiscan only be attributed to its strategic collaborations, which contribute to the efficiency of port operations and operational excellence, supported by state-of-the-art facilities. This enables vessels to have a quick turnaround time and experience seamless cargo handling, compared to other ports in the country.

As proof of its influence and partnership in enabling efficient and seamless operations, the terminal enjoys the support of regulatory agencies, including the Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Export Processing Zones Authority, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nigeria Police, and the Department of State Services. The support and cooperation of these agencies have contributed immensely to the success of the port with their presence affirming a commitment to streamlining operations and facilitating the smooth movement of cargo. The terminal’s design, along with its state-of-the-art post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes, RTGs and other cargo handling equipment, sets it apart from other overcrowded terminals, enabling it to operate free of congestion, both at the quay and in the yard. Thereby, guaranteeing optimal vessel productivity during discharge and load operations.

The service delivery and state-of-the-art facilities continue to attract businesses to the port. A case in point is the presence of leading shipping lines of international repute. Currently, CMA CGM, Maersk Line, COSCO, Ocean Network Express (ONE), and ZIM/GSL make weekly calls at the port, a marker that further cements the ambition of the LFT to become the leading maritime hub in West Africa. These services are expected to attract more foreign direct investment (FDI) and enhance Nigeria’s standing in global maritime trade.

At the time the shipping line services were launched, both Lekki Port and Lekki Free port Terminal management described it as a significant milestone in the terminal’s development and expansion of capacity noting that through strategic collaborations with global shipping leaders, LFTis strengthening its international presence and creating new opportunities for trade and industrial growth in Nigeria and the region.

This milestone was also described as a reflection of LFT’s commitment to positioning the nation as the leading maritime hub in West Africa.

Stimulating Productivity with Infrastructure, Accessibility

A major factor in LFT’s efficiency is the heavy investment in infrastructure, which has enabled increased efficiency and safety. With a strong focus on automation, the terminal deploys technology and robotics to streamline various processes, including cargo handling, gate operations, and tracking. This has boosted overall port operations by reducing human errors and improving productivity.

Add these innovative approaches to its seamless cargo inspection under the surveillance of two FS 6000 scanners with capacity to scan containers in a matter of minutes, along with the availability of four boats provided and operated by the Nigerian Ports Authority to ensure safe navigation and berthing of large vessels, it is more than enough to agree that in a matter of years, the terminal will be a reference point across Africa.

A significant infrastructural boost is the soon-to-be completed Coastal Road and the recently approved construction of the 7th Axial Road, which brings light to the tunnel of accessibility to the port. The two roads are strategically important for port connectivity, making cargo evacuation from Lekki Port convenient and fast.

Spanning a distance of 25 kilometres, with completion projected for 2028, the 7th Axial Road —a dual carriageway —will provide a critical alternative route, offering direct access to the A121 Lagos-Benin Expressway. It is expected to reduce travel time for cargo evacuation from Lekki Port significantly. Currently, trucks travelling from LFT to Lagos via the Coastal Road and the A121 corridor spend an average of 4.5 hours on the journey. The 7th Axial Road is projected to cut this travel time significantly, improving cargo flow, reducing turnaround time, enhancing port efficiency, and lowering overall logistics costs.

These developments will further boost turnaround time at LFT, considering the multiple access corridors and ongoing roads upgrade initiatives underway, including the federal government’s consideration of connecting the axis to the national rail network. This, if made possible, will enhance trade by facilitating the evacuation of cargo from the terminal to other parts of the country, as well as toneigbhouring landlocked countries. In terms of time efficiency, the terminal holds an enviable reputation as the most efficient maritime gateway in the country, with truck service time at its gates standing at 1.1 hours, a figure that no Lagos-based terminal can match.

Over the last two years, dignitaries who have visited the terminal have consistently praised its technological advancements. So, it was no surprise to learn that the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, who recently made his official visit to Lekki Deep Sea portcommended the management of Lekki Deep Seaport and LFT for their unwavering commitment to operational excellence and port optimization. He went on to state that the NPA will benchmark Lekki Port and LFT’s cutting-edge infrastructure and advanced technology in its broader port modernisationprogramme.

Still enamoured by the innovation and efficiency, he highlighted the port’s growing transhipment volume, which is meeting the maritime demands of neigbhouring countries and supporting the NPA’s objective of achieving economies of scale. Also, how LFT’s fully automated operations align perfectly with NPA’s goal to implement the Port Community System (PCS), which will pave the way for the long-awaited National Single Window (NSW), designed to streamline the nation’s trade processes.

Echoing the thoughts of the MD of NPA, it is reassuring to know that the future is indeed very bright for the Nigerian maritime sector going by the exceptional praise of the LFT and Lekki Port’s ability to berth super post-Panamax vessels and deliver rapid cargo and vessel turnaround, which he describes as “a strategic asset in enhancing Nigeria’s export competitiveness.”

“A major factor in LFT’s efficiency is the heavy investment in infrastructure, which has enabled increased efficiency and safety. With a strong focus on automation, the terminal deploys technology and robotics to streamline various processes, including cargo handling, gate operations, and tracking. This has boosted overall port operations by reducing human errors and improving productivity.”
