Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Senator Bala Mohammed, yesterday blamed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for the crisis in the PDP.

Mohammed alleged that Wike has vowed to ensure the PDP does not form the next government in 2027, describing the former Rivers governor’s attack on the opposition political party as impunity and insisting that it was not rubbing off well on the Bola Tinubu administration.

Mohammed, alongside others, spoke at the PDP Secretariat in Abuja, where the two groups within the party clashed while attempting to take over control of the party’s headquarters ahead of the parallel meeting reportedly scheduled for the same venue by the faction that held its national convention in Ibadan at the weekend.

This was as the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, states that the ongoing fight was about the future of democracy in Nigeria. He also disclosed the reason behind his fallout with Wike, saying the issue was centered around party discipline and the need to uphold the rules of the PDP.
At the same time, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned what it described as a “disturbing and dangerous assault on democracy” following the attack on the National Secretariat of the PDP in Abuja by armed men under the command of senior officials of the ruling party, warning that the country’s democracy was under siege.

Curiously, the factional National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP loyal to Wike has ratified the expulsion of the Governors of Oyo, Bauchi and Zamfara States, Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed and Dauda Lawal respectively.

Included on the list were chairman, Board of Trustees of the PDP, Senator Adolphus

Wabara, Senator Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja and Chief Olabode George, among others, for alleged anti-party activities.

Bauchi Governor Slams Wike over Alleged Impunity, Gangsterism

Bala Mohammed also called out Wike for working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to destroy the opposition, describing the FCT minister’s attack on the PDP as immoral.

He stated that the so-called splinter group within the PDP is the sole creation of Wike, pointing out that the ongoing showdown is a fight between ‘good and bad’, and maintaining that the former Rivers governor was ‘polluting’ the political space.

“The showdown you are seeing is a showdown between good and bad. The convention has already dissolved their own term. This (crisis) is a creation of one man called Wike, who thinks that he can continue to pollute the political space by showing gangsterism, ‘animism’, and hooliganism and charlatanism.

“And by doing so, he is not helping even the present administration. I’m talking about what is causing all this. We should go by the rules. (This is) arrogance and impunity. This is our secretariat. If they want to say they have a so-called faction, they should go somewhere. All the governors are here,” the Bauchi governor maintained.

According to the PDP governors’ forum chairman, the plan of the FCT minister, who he said is working for the APC, is to ensure that the PDP does not have a presidential candidate, win election or form government in 2027.

“They should go and leave us alone. Must they be with us? This man (Wike), where is he working? Is he not working with the APC? Why didn’t you ask him? Is it moral for him to say that he will be in APC to destroy us? Is it moral for him to say so? Is it normal that he is working for somebody (else) and he said we will not produce a government in 2027?” the Bauchi governor queried.

Besides, the Bauchi governor insisted that the Wike-led group lacks the legal backing to hold a Board of Trustees (BoT) or National Executive Council (NEC) meeting or use the party’s building.

He added: “We don’t believe there is any BoT because that is an illegality. I think the media should also educate and inculcate a sense of orderliness in the political space, so that people will know precisely what you believe in, because the shenanigans the perception should be positive.
“We had a convention where some people were expelled, and then, of course, even INEC does not recognise them, and they are being backed by the police to come and do a charade BoT meeting.

“BoT is constituted by the NWC. They don’t have NWC and they don’t have a constitution. Our constitution says it all. If I’m expelled, I’m expelled, and it is not me or Seyi Makinde, or any person, it is the convention of over 20 states of the federation,” he averred.

On whether the new PDP Chairman, Kabiru Turaki is recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mohammed said: “Yes, he is. He’s recognised by INEC because it’s a legal issue.”

According to him, the speculation that the new chairman is not recognised by INEC just because the electoral umpire was not present at the Ibadan convention does not hold water.

“After the convention, we have already sent all the reports to INEC, INEC is not obliged or forced to attend any convention or any political party. Have you ever seen APC doing any convention? Did you ask them? But they have leaders, and they are recognised by INEC. Why must we be the only people that you assess?”

“The Constitution does not force INEC to be there, but we must give them notice. We gave them notice, and they accepted and acknowledged. We have the acknowledgement that they got the notice. If they decided not to come, that is their own free volition, but certainly we have documents that we have notified them duly and they accepted.

“So convention is legal, because all the court orders have been set aside by the courts. Because we have already made a plea and it has been put aside. So people should know the process of our legal system,” Mohammed argued.

Later, the Bauchi governor took to his official social media handle to react to the incident at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja alongside Makinde, Turaki and others.

He wrote: “As Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, I must state clearly: enough is enough. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) does not belong to any individual, it belongs to Nigerians.

“Regarding the troubling police blockade of our party’s national secretariat, I reaffirm that the PDP Governors’ Forum will not stand by and watch the party be dismantled by those who neither understand its founding principles nor respect its future.”

He added that they were fully committed to working with the newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC) to safeguard the national secretariat, uphold internal democracy, and protect the integrity of the party.

“We shall do so with unity, strategic coordination, and an unshakable commitment to the rule of law. Let me be clear: the PDP will not be cowed, harassed, or silenced. We have weathered greater storms and emerged stronger. This moment will be no different. We will rise from it more united and more determined.

“I must also caution the presidency: it is a dangerous precedent to empower individuals who lack both character and commitment to democratic values, individuals who misuse state power to settle internal political disputes. Such actions do not serve our country, and they certainly do not serve the PDP. Rather, they undermine the very institutions that bind our democracy together,” he said.
Chaos in PDP Secretariat

But there was chaos at the PDP secretariat yesterday as the faction loyal to Wike, temporarily took over the party’s national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

The takeover was ahead of the parallel meeting reportedly scheduled for the same venue by the faction that held its national convention in Ibadan at the weekend.

But the takeover warranted the intervention of Governors Makinde of Oyo State and Mohammed of Bauchi State who immediately arrived at the party’s secretariat to confront the Wike’s faction.

This was followed by police throwing several Cannister of tear gas to disperse the surging party members

The Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) elected at the Ibadan national convention had scheduled its inaugural meeting with party stakeholders at 10 a.m. at the PDP national secretariat.

Also the Abdulrahman-led faction of NWC had summoned emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) meetings for 11a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, at the same venue.

The factional chairman, Mohammed, was already at the secretariat building, which had been under lock and key. Armed security operatives were also deployed to the party secretariat to maintain peace as the police took over all the roads leading to the PDP secretariat with 15 Hilux vans.

The operatives, comprising personnel of the Mobile Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Department of State Services (DSS), were stationed at the entrance gates of the party and other strategic locations within the party premises and environs.

There were also security patrol vehicles stationed along the roads leading to the party secretariat, aimed at forestalling any breakdown of law and order, as the PDP factions lay claim to offices within the premises.

While the suspended National Secretary of the party, Samuel Anyanwu, had already gained access to the party secretariat, with accreditation ongoing ahead of their 103 NEC meeting in progress, the Turaki faction had yet to arrive.

Also, the anti-Turaki protesters were seen carrying placards bearing inscriptions such as “No to Turaki” and “Turaki must go”, dancing to the music provided by a team of drummers.

Anyanwu described the security deployment at the party secretariat as routine security arrangements whenever the party was holding its BoT or NEC meeting.

“Anytime we’re having a BoT meeting or NEC meeting, we usually invite the security because of the people who are around, so they don’t embarrass our members. So, usually we write to all the security agencies for them to give us security to protect the office. That’s why you see the police here. It’s not the first time.

“Well, first of all, I wrote to all the security agencies on the 14th of November, 2025, that we are going to have a BoT at the NEC meeting, the largest NEC meeting here. I wrote to INEC as well, which they have managed, and they have been on the news, and they have put it on television and in newspapers.

“I’m the National Secretary of the party. My office is still running until Dec. 8. So, undoubtedly, I’m doing my function. I want the BoT acting chairman who is here, who has members of the board of trustees who are here, who have come for their meeting.

“You can see there’s no problem. So if we start our meeting and they come here to disrupt our meeting, they become intruders, because we’re already here. I don’t see anybody sensible enough to come and disrupt a meeting that’s going on. If anybody wants to meet, they can meet anywhere. It’s allowed, but we’re here,” Anyanwu said.

As the tension increased amid teargas, Makinde, Mohammed, and Turaki, arrived at the party secretariat and a clash ensued with the Wike faction over control of the secretariat.

Makinde, Bala Mohammed, and Turaki forced their way into the PDP NEC hall to hold their NEC meeting. The governors’ faction however overpowered the Wike faction from the party secretariat.

As tension rose, Wike arrived in a convoy amidst heavy teargas by police led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police. At that point, Bala, Makinde, Turaki, Kosheodo, and other newly elected NWC barricaded the main entrance to the party.

They prevented Wike, his entourage, and other supporters from entering the premises to attend the NEC meeting. It became so rowdy that the police, again, swung into action again.

Bauchi governor decried the situation, saying usurper and interlopers are now occupying their Secretariat. He then called on President Donald Trump of the United States and the international community to wade in and save democracy in Nigeria.

In the same vein, Turaki expressed regrets about the whole drama, saying, “ We won’t give up our secretariat, and we shall defend it with our lives.”
Makinde: Its Fight for Democracy, Explains Fallout with Wike

Governor Makinde in his intervention, stated that the current altercation was not about him, but a fight for the future of democracy in Nigeria. He disclosed the reason behind his fallout with Wike, saying the issue was centered around party discipline and the need to uphold the rules of the PDP.
Makinde emphasised that Nigeria should be a multi-party democracy, allowing Nigerians to have options when choosing their leaders. He stressed that the party’s founding fathers envisioned a system, where multiple parties could thrive, ensuring citizens have a say in governance.

Asked why he was no longer friends with Wike who was a member of the G-5, Makinde said, “Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events. We will rather talk about issues. What’s the issue? The issue is we don’t believe in one party in Nigeria.

“We believe that our founding fathers gave us a multi-party democracy. We must sustain it so that Nigerians can have options when they are choosing their leaders. That is the issue. I don’t want to talk about individuals, and I don’t want to talk about events.”

Earlier, Wike had accused Makinde of orchestrating a breach of trust and undermining party unity. Wike claimed that Makinde’s actions, including promoting Ude Okoye as National Secretary, were a betrayal of their agreements.

The feud between Makinde and Wike had led to a heated standoff at the PDP National Secretariat, with both factions attempting to assert control over the party. The situation remained volatile, with fears of violence and unrest.

ADC Decries Attack on PDP Secretariat

The ADC has condemned what it described as a “disturbing and dangerous assault on democracy” following attack on the PDP National Secretariat, warning that the country’s democracy was under siege.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC criticised the Tinubu administration for employing violence in its bid to take control of another political party.

The party warned that such actions were a direct threat to multiparty democracy and advanced the ruling party’s desire to entrench a one-party rule in Nigeria. The party condemned what it described as the brazen invasion and violent takeover of the PDP national secretariat by agents of the APC federal government.

According to the statement, ‘’The incident, without doubt, is a dangerous assault on Nigeria’s democracy, which must be condemned by everyone, regardless of party affiliation.

‘’Based on its various actions and machinations since coming to power, this government’s anti-democratic credentials are no longer in doubt. However, this latest assault represents a new and dangerous low, even by the already-worrying standards of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.
‘’With this action, the government is sending a chilling message that it would do anything and employ any means, including acts of terror, to advance partisan political interests.

“If the government could send armed agents to enforce factional control of an opposition headquarters, what stops it from doing the same to labour unions, press organisations, student movements, or peaceful protest groups?

“Therefore, let no one make the mistake of thinking that this is a PDP matter. This attack affects the future of democracy in Nigeria and sets a dangerous background for the 2027 general elections.’’

Faction Claims Expulsion of Makinde, Mohammed, George, Others, Dissolves State Excos

The NEC of the PDP loyal to Wike has ratified the expulsion of the Governors of Oyo, Bauchi and Zamfara States, Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed and Dauda Lawal respectively.

Also affected were chairman, Board of Trustees of PDP, Senator Adolphus Wabara, Senator Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja and others, for anti Party activities.

The NEC also ratified the dissolution of State Executive Council of Bauchi, Oyo, Zamfara, Yobe, Lagos, Edo, and Ekiti States. These decisions were taken at the 103 NEC meeting of the party held in the party national secretariat in Abuja yesterday.

Chairman of the PDP faction, Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman, who presented the memo for the expulsion, said it was as result of the affected party members’ disregard for court judgements, an action he said put the party in disrepute.

The NEC meeting’s Communique was read by Anyanwu.

“The National Executive Committee (NEC) met on 18 November 2025 to address recent developments affecting the unity, stability, and constitutional order of our Party. At a time when Nigerians look to the PDP for leadership, NEC convened to uphold truth, justice, discipline, and respect for the rule of law.

“NEC expressed deep concern over the actions of some members who violated subsisting court orders by organizing and attending a purported and unauthorized convention. This act triggered confusion, factionalisation, and the defection of governors and legislators nationwide.
“NEC reaffirmed that the PDP draws its legitimacy from strict adherence to its Constitution and that of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not from impunity.

“NEC received the report of the Acting National Chairman, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, detailing breaches of Articles 58(1) and 59(1), including anti-party activities, disobedience to court orders, and conduct bringing the Party into disrepute.

“NEC approved the commencement of disciplinary procedures against the following; Adolphus Wabara, Olabode George, Ben N. Obi, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), Bala Mohammed, Oluseyi Makinde, Dauda Lawal, Taofiq Arapaja, Setonji Koshoedo, Okechukwu Obiechina Daniel, Woyengikuro Daniel, Mohammed Kadade Suleiman, Emmanuel Ogidi, Sumaila Adamu Burga, Umar Sani, Udom Emmanuel and Emmanuel Enorden.

“NEC further resolved that Chief Ali Odefa must refund all salaries and allowances collected after his expulsion on 12 December 2024. These actions are taken to preserve order and discipline within the Party.

“NEC ratified the dissolution of State Excos in Bauchi, Oyo, Zamfara, Yobe, Lagos and Ekiti. The NWC is directed to constitute caretaker committees and begin fresh congresses immediately while the Edo State Exco led by Barr. Nosa Ogieva has been approved.

“NEC directed Deputies in all National Working Committee positions now vacant owing to expulsion to assume the substantive positions in acting capacity and function as NWC members.

“NEC also formally ratified the appointment of Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman, as the Acting National Chairman of the party.
“NEC directed the legal team and NWC to commence immediate constitutional action to recover seats of all elected officials who defected from the PDP, in line with Sections 68(1)(g) and 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution.

“NEC approved a Party-wide reconciliation initiative to heal divisions and rebuild trust, while ensuring that reconciliation does not undermine discipline. A nationwide membership audit and revalidation will begin ahead of the 2027 elections.

“NEC acknowledged the anxieties among members but assures the Party faithful that these decisions are aimed at stabilising and strengthening the PDP.

“The NEC affirms that the era of indiscipline is over. The PDP will not bow to lawlessness or personal ambition. With unity, discipline, and renewed purpose, the PDP will rebuild stronger and restore public confidence ahead of the next electoral cycle.”

PDP Salutes Nigerians for Support

The Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led NWC of the PDP, has saluted Nigerians and all members of the Party for their solidarity with the PDP in its struggle against tyranny and attempt by undemocratic elements to hijack the Party’s National Secretariat today.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party said, “The support, courage and resilience demonstrated by Nigerians as our party resisted and triumphed over state-backed aggression further confirms the PDP as the Party of choice for Nigerians as we march to take over power in 2027.

“Nigerians celebrated when the National Chairman, accompanied by the Governors of Bauchi and Oyo States, Sen. Bala Mohammed and Engr. Seyi Makinde arrived at the Nation

al Secretariat of our Party for the inaugural meeting of the new executive elected at the successful National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital
“However, upon arrival, compromised personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and thugs reportedly recruited by the expelled former National Secretary of the Party, Sen Samuel Anyanwu and apparently endorsed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who was also expelled from our party, barricaded the entrance and attempted to prevent our leaders from accessing the premises.

“Without any provocation, they fired tear-gas canisters at the Governors, NWC members, party leaders and peaceful supporters. This reckless action triggered a stampede and resulted in multiple injuries.

“They fired over 200 canisters at unarmed and harmless citizens who had gathered to witness a lawful party meeting.

“Despite these acts of aggression, party supporters and Nigerians present, stayed firm and courageous, insisting that the right leadership of the party must be allowed to run the party without external influence.

“In the end, they prevailed and the NWC members had access to the National Secretariat.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this struggle transcends the PDP. It is about the survival of electoral democracy in Nigeria, a system that depends fundamentally on the existence of a vibrant and independent opposition.

“This attack on opposition under the authority of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu constitutes a direct threat to the survival of our democracy. When opposition is suppressed, the core democratic principle of institutionalised uncertainty disappears, reducing elections to mere uneventful events with predetermined outcomes.

“Electoral authoritarianism and expansionist disposition of the ruling party destroyed previous republics, and contemporarily we are witnessing the dangerous return of weak institutions, compromised security agencies, and an over-zealous ruling party in this Republic.

“We, therefore, call on all democracy-loving nations, institutions, and individuals to rise in unison and unequivocally condemn this brazen assault on democratic freedom in Nigeria.”

•Our party made a mistake fielding Atiku in 2023, says Abba Moro
•Ortom gives condition to support whoever emerges PDP presidential candidate

Chuks Okocha and Alex Enumah in Abuja

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed satisfaction with the zoning of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket to the South, saying he had to give up his ambition to allow the decision pull through.

In another development the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, yesterday, said the PDP made a mistake fielding former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate in the 2023 general election.

But a former governor of Benue State, Mr Samuel Ortom, has welcomed the zoning of PDP’s presidential ticket to the southern part of Nigeria, with a condition that his support would be determined by the choice of candidate.

Addressing journalists, the Bauchi governor said he was part of the decision regarding the zoning.

“I’m very satisfied with the resolution because I’m part of it– from the arrangement, strategy, and delivery.

“It’s an all-inclusive decision for us to have our national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, and sustain the existing zoning formula in the party offices and to zone the presidential office to the South so that we can have some sanity, understanding, and unity.

“I’m calling on Nigerians to know that politics is not about personal interest, it’s about self actualisation within the framework of party decisions, manifesto, and national development.

“Everything is predicated on sacrifice not interest and of course we must always give allowance, respect each other, and power comes from God.
“So, we are always available as governors, NWC, BoT to work towards making sure that PDP is a darling of Nigerians so that we can give everyone the political space or allowances to come and actualise their aspirations.”

Moro: It’s a Mistake Fielding Atiku in 2023

Meanwhile, Moro has said the PDP regretted fielding Atiku as its presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, describing the move as an error that cost the party dearly.

Moro, who spoke in an interview, revealed that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) made a bold decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region, a move he insisted was rooted in fairness, equity, and justice.

“Zoning the ticket to the south was a strategic correction of past mistakes. To people who have been somewhat pessimistic about the resilience of the PDP, it could be shocking.

“You will recall that I have told you here that a lot of activities have been put in place by the PDP towards resolving some of the conflicts within the party. And that out of the ashes of the storm, we’re going to bounce back,” he stated, addressing the surprise that greeted NEC announcement.

Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Moro admitted that fielding a northern candidate like Atiku was a miscalculation.

He said, “Majority of us, virtually all of us, agreed that a mistake was made in 2023, fielding a northern candidate.

“And this time around, in the spirit of unity, in the spirit of fairness and justice, PDP leaders decided to swallow their saliva and say, look, let’s take this thing to the south, where majority of the people expected that it would have been.”

The Senate Minority Leader acknowledged the party’s regret over the 2023 outcome, stating that, “To lose a very monumental election in that disastrous manner, as it were, certainly is something for regrets.”

He explained the decision to open the ticket in 2023, allowing a northern candidate to succeed a northern president “backfired” as Nigerians resisted the move, contributing to the PDP electoral loss.

On the possibility of former Anambra governor, Peter Obi, returning to the PDP, Moro revealed ongoing efforts to woo him back.
“In the run-up to 2027, I’m aware that certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, saying, ‘hey, come back home. This is what we are likely going to do. And if you come, you stand a chance of being a candidate’,” he said.

He added that Obi’s potential return could bolster the PDP chances.

“If Peter Obi comes back and is the most favoured candidate, the most supported candidate, and becomes a candidate, the PDP will make an impact in the 2027 election,” he said.

Moro also addressed speculations about former President Goodluck Jonathan as a potential candidate, just as he dismissed concerns about constitutional barriers, but cited judicial precedents.

Ortom Gives Condition to Support PDP in 2027

A former governor of Benue State, Mr Samuel Ortom, has welcomed the zoning of PDP’s presidential ticket to the southern part of Nigeria, with a condition that his support would be determined by the choice of candidate.

Ortom, who noted that he and the other members of the G-5 had clamoured for the zoning of the ticket to the south in the 2023 presidential election, however observed that his support for the party’s presidential candidate in 2027, would be determined by the candidate the party brings forward.

Speaking on Arise News last night, Ortom commended the party’s leadership for taking the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the south.
But, when asked if the decision of the PDP would affect his earlier support for the incumbent president, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the former governor pointed out that his decision would be determined by the credibility of the PDP’s candidate.

“If we have a credible candidate” he said, “I will compare him with the current president and will take a decision.”

Discussing the possibility of the PDP fielding a presidential candidate, he said, “We’re waiting… if there is no presidential candidate then we will continue with the south.

“Let us what to see what will happen in the next few days and the build up to 2027,” Ortom added.

Five PDP governors later known as the G-5, led by former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, had in 2023 declared support for APC’s Tinubu, following the refusal of the PDP to zone its presidential ticket to the southern part of Nigeria.

Unfortunately, it was Ortom who headed the committee that zoned the party’s ticket to the north, making it possible for Atiku to run and clinch the party’s ticket.
However, while Ortom has refused to take responsibility for the decision of his committee, which he did not object as the chairman, he still sided with his allies to sabotage his party, while pointing fingers at others.

Ortom, who alongside his aggrieved colleagues openly declared support for Tinubu ahead the 2023 election, recently accused some people of sabotaging the PDP in the election, failing to admit his role in the mess the PDP found itself.

But after emerging president, Tinubu only appointed Wike Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and the minister had since declared support for Tinubu’s return in 2027, despite claiming membership of the PDP.

Curiously, while Ortom and Wike had openly declared support for Tinubu’s 2027 ambition, another member of the G-5 and Governor of Oyo State, Mr. Seyi Makinde, has sided with his party and working with like-minds to get the behemoth back on its feet.

Lukman: Coalition Will Avoid Past Mistakes of Atiku, Obi to Defeat Tinubu in 2027 /2025/07/10/lukman-coalition-will-avoid-past-mistakes-of-atiku-obi-to-defeat-tinubu-in-2027/ /2025/07/10/lukman-coalition-will-avoid-past-mistakes-of-atiku-obi-to-defeat-tinubu-in-2027/#comments Thu, 10 Jul 2025 04:00:35 +0000 /?p=1101392

•Discloses whoever emerges presidential candidate will get massive support, coalition won’t stand on anybody’s mandate

•Tinubu planning clampdown on opposition leaders, Abdullahi raises the alarm

•Coalition dead on arrival, declares ACF spokesman

•ADC takes over factional PDP, APC, LP structures in Benue

Chuks Okocha in Abuja and George Okoh in Makurdi

One of the leaders of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mallam Salihu Lukman, has said the opposition coalition would avoid mistakes made in the past election by both former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, among others willing to contest the ticket of the party.

Lukman spoke when he appeared on a Channels TV programme. He hinted that whoever would fly the flag of the coalition in 2027 election must earn it by winning at the primary election.

Lukman appealed to supporters of the various presidential aspirants to join hands with the coalition to rescue Nigeria.

Relatedly, National Publicity Secretary of ADC, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, condemned a tweet by a presidential aide, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, which alleged that the opposition was planning to overthrow the Tinubu government before 2027.

Abdullahi said the allegation was part of plans by the Tinubu government to clamp down on the opposition.

But Publicity Secretary of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Professor Tukur Mohammed-Baba, described the brewing crisis within ADC as unsurprising, warning that the coalition may risk failure if it continues to focus on personalities rather than presenting a clear ideological and policy-driven agenda.

Meanwhile, ADC had taken over the structures of the factional Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), LP, and All Progressives Congress(APC) in Benue State.

Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman of the ruling APC, said, “Once the opposition leaders are divided, if by 2027 we present more than one candidate, it’s as much as granting victory to APC and President Asiwaju.

“So as much as possible, we must keep the opposition together, and in keeping the opposition together, it’s not about asking anybody to step down.

“I appeal to the Obedients and other groups, to really understand that the ADC and the coalition is the home for them. And they should come and let’s build ourselves together.

“If Peter Obi emerges the presidential candidate of ADC, we will all support him and strengthen him to overcome the shortcomings of the past.

“So also, any other, if it is Atiku Abubakar that emerges, for instance, we will support him and strengthen him in such a way that he doesn’t repeat the mistake of former President Buhari.

“So, I think these are issues, which, as citizens, as Nigerians, we must be very honest and frank in engaging them if we are going to move this country forward. This is the kind of debate we want to have in ADC. Everybody will slug it out in the presidential primary, apparently.”

The Kaduna-born politician said the debate within ADC and within the coalition would factor all and ensure that the issue of equity was properly taken care of and addressed in a way that Nigerians would see there was a new party, which respected the interests of every party member and accommodated everyone.

Lukman, however, declared that there was no discussion about presidential candidates in the coalition at the moment.

He stated, “Let me be very clear on this, there is no discussion about the question of presidential candidate in the coalition up to this moment. And our position is, basically whoever, and that is the first test of whether we’ll be different from the existing parties or not, whoever will be the candidate of the ADC must win the primary.

“It’s the first test of whether those aspiring are, in the first place, democrats or not. And this is the issue we are engaging all of them. And the other test, which we are putting to all of them is that their ambition must go beyond their personal expectation. It has to factor the reality facing the country.”

Tinubu’s Laying Foundation to Clampdown on Opposition Leaders, ADC Raises Alarm

The ADC leadership condemned a recent tweet by a presidential, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, which alleged that the opposition was planning to overthrow the Tinubu government before 2027.

The party said that was part of a grand plot to start clamping down on opposition leaders.

‘’While we consider this tweet as reckless and malicious, we also believe it is a lot more than that. If anything, it potentially lays the grounds for systematic clampdown on opposition leaders,’’ Abdullahi said.

He warned that such reckless and unsubstantiated claim signalled a broader campaign of intimidation and repression against political opposition leaders by the Tinubu administration.

Abdullahi, in a statement, wrote, ‘’Bayo Onanuga’s tweet is a textbook example of a political dog whistle. The APC-led federal government appears to be constructing a false narrative that is designed to justify potential clampdown on dissent, and to criminalise legitimate opposition activity under the guise of national security.

‘’The ADC is not interested in truncating democracy; we are solely committed to saving the nation from the irredeemable incompetence of this government. And the only means available to us is the democratic means. We are not soldiers, we are politicians.

“We don’t have bullets; we only have the ballots. When the time comes, we will only present our solutions and an alternative vision of the future to the Nigerian people and leave them to make their choice.

‘’We are left to wonder why the APC government is so jittery that it is so eager to betray its own heritage. APC is the first opposition party to come to power in Nigeria. It is therefore a great wonder that the same party now appears to find it strange that there is an opposition at all.

‘’We, therefore, call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to promptly caution his aides from further baseless but dangerous allegations that have the potential to heat up the system even two years ahead of the next election. This manner of crying wolf where there is none does not make the president look good and only betrays a sense of panic.”

Abdullahi stated, “We also call on the Nigerian people to be vigilant and discerning, and to reject the underhand tactics being deployed to delegitimise the opposition and silence alternative voices. The health of our democracy depends on a free, open, and competitive political environment.

“We urge the international community, democratic governments all over the world, international observers, and human rights organisations, to closely monitor the unfolding political environment in Nigeria.

“We call on them to hold the Tinubu administration accountable for any actions that undermine democratic freedoms or violate the political rights of Nigerian citizens.

“The ADC remains committed to building a better Nigeria, through peace, participation, and the power of the people.”

ACF Spokesman: Coalition Dead on Arrival

Publicity Secretary of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Professor Tukur Mohammed-Baba, said the crisis in ADC was expected.

Mohammed-Baba warned that the coalition risked failure if it continued to focus on personalities rather than presenting a clear ideological and policy-driven agenda.

Speaking in an interview on ARISE News, Mohammed-Baba said the turbulence rocking the coalition, as well as allegations of infiltration by the ruling APC were in line with Nigeria’s political history.

He said, “Things are still unfolding. We are not sure. This is just the beginning. There is a lot more to come, but it’s not surprising given the nature of our politics and the nature of the persons and personalities allegedly behind the coalition. This is expected.”

Mohammed-Baba stated that Nigeria’s political history had been marked by shifting alliances and fragile coalitions, citing examples from the First Republic to more recent attempts in 2011, 2015, and 2023.

According to him, “Coalitions are not new in our country. Some have succeeded, others have failed. For the last few months, some of the key promoters of this coalition have been jumping from one party to another.

“In fact, if you take any of the individuals prominent in the coalition, you will see they have moved from parties to parties over the last maybe 16 years. So it’s not surprising.”

The ACF spokesman also addressed allegations that APC was actively working to destabilise the coalition from within by coercing members to abandon it, particularly in the North-east and North-west regions.

He said, “If you are talking of this coercion to get people to either drop their ambitions or go to the APC, it’s been going on in various forms. For the last year, people have been coerced to leave their parties. That is part of it.

“I have spoken to people who said the party is dead on arrival because the ruling party will pull out all the stops to ensure that disarray and conflict engulf the new coalition.”

He added, however, that some supporters of the coalition remained determined to press on despite the challenges.

“I have also spoken to others who are very confident, people who are pro-coalition. They are just as determined to ensure that they weather the storms. So you and I are probably jumping the gun. Things are unfolding.” Mohammed-Baba stated.

He warned that the coalition’s focus on political figures rather than substantive policy proposals was disappointing and risked alienating voters.

Mohammed-Baba said, “My reading for now, given the little evidence we have from the coalition, is that to me personally it’s a bit of a disappointment. I have not seen a coherent statement of what they intend to do.

“The emphasis on personalities—who is going to be president, who will be senate president or secretary to the federal government—gives me a sense of déjà vu. We are going back to square one.

“If it is all about personalities, I think they are dead on arrival. If they can present a coherent policy programme and tell us how to restore national institutions, revitalise the economy, and promote inclusion, then maybe they can stand. But for now, I don’t see anything.”

Lamenting the absence of ideological clarity in Nigeria’s political parties, he said, “Probably what is disappointing is that up to now we are talking of personalities. Nobody is talking of ideology.

“All the parties in Nigeria, nearly all of them, maybe one or two exceptions, share the same ideology: liberal democracy and neoliberal economic policies. There isn’t much difference.”

On the debate over the region from which a presidential candidate should emerge, Mohammed-Baba rejected the idea that regional origins should matter, calling instead for a focus on leadership quality and national development.

He said, “I don’t care where the candidate comes from. We are wasting too much time and energy not allowing democracy to take root by insisting that a presidential candidate must come from one region or another. I would prefer that we go for the very best who has an agenda for a united, strong, economically viable Nigeria.”

ADC Takes over PDP, APC, LP Factional Structures in Benue

ADC took over the structures of PDP, LP and APC factions, as they joined the party in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, recenty.

At the event, members of PDP, LP and APC declared their full support for ADC.

Former Speaker pro tempore, Hon Terngu Tsegba, was nominated interim chairman of the party.

Tsegba, who was a three-term House of Representatives member, alongside former governor of Benue State, Dr Gabriel Suswam and erstwhile Senator for Benue North West, Emmanuel Orker-Jev, officially led members of PDP to ADC during the official launch of the coalition.

Two former Senate Presidents from Benue State, Senator Iyorchia Ayu and Senator David Mark, were also represented. The party took over the PDP secretariat at Ochagwu Lawani Street, Old GRA, Makurdi.

According to Suswam the interim state executive council of seven members “was for the purpose of registration only”, adding, “For every local government, we are electing two women and five men.”

He explained, “The ADC constitution has 38 positions and for now, there will be five exco members per council ward and the tenure of the interim exco is going to last for 30 days after which they stand dissolved.”

In his acceptance speech, Tsegha said the first action of ADC, if voted into power, would be the scrapping of the bureaus and ministries of local government affairs and the granting of full autonomy at the third tier of government.

Orker-Jev, while giving his vote of thanks, expressed appreciation for the choice of Tsegba as interim chairman. He pointed out that the former legislator was a veteran politician.

*Dantata was part of a family of traders and merchants who built the famous groundnut pyramids of the First Republic

Deji Elumoye, Chuks Okocha, Folalumi Alaran in Abuja, and Ahmad Sorondinki in Kano

President Bola Tinubu; former President Muhammadu Buhari; Vice President Kashim Shettima; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President, David Mark; Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf yesterday mourned an elder statesman, renowned business mogul and philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who passed away at 94 in the early hours of yesterday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF); presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi; former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ex-governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; Chairperson of the National Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman; and a Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) have also expressed their condolences on the passing of the business icon.

The late Dantata was an uncle to Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

In a statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president described Dantata’s death as a monumental national loss.

“With the death of Alhaji Dantata today, we lost a prominent business mogul, patriot, and elder statesman who contributed significantly to the growth and development of our nation,” Tinubu stated.

Tinubu praised his sterling contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.

The president eulogised Dantata for his public-spirited philanthropy, which touched lives, especially in education and healthcare delivery.

He recalled his relationship with the late mogul, describing his wise counsel and support as deeply encouraging and beneficial.

“Alhaji Dantata will be remembered for his industry, diligence, steadfastness, and great commitment to national unity through his many business ventures and philanthropic activities that touched countless lives of Nigerians,” the president declared.

On his part, former President, Buhari described him as a “visionary leader” whose legacy will endure for generations.

In a statement released by his media aide, Garba Shehu, Buhari said Dantata “leaves behind a monumental legacy in philanthropy and entrepreneurship that reshaped the lives of people and business settings in the country and beyond.”

Buhari extolled Dantata’s far-reaching influence in business, Islamic education, healthcare, and rural development, calling his contributions “inspirational” across national and international spheres.

Reflecting personally on their relationship, Buhari remarked, “I will always cherish my interactions with him.”

Also, in his condolence message, Vice President Shettima expressed deep grief over the passing of Dantata, saying the nation has lost an irreplaceable institution.
Shettima described him as “a living bridge that connected us to our past.

“We have not just lost a leader; we have lost an irreplaceable institution,” the Vice President said, describing Dantata as “one of the greatest titans in Nigeria’s philosophical history” whose departure marks the end of a vital chapter in the country’s economic and democratic evolution.

“In African tradition, when such an elderly person transitions, a vital chapter of our history departs with them. He was indeed among the great titans, a living bridge that connected us to our past,” Shettima added.

Former Vice President Atiku expressed sadness over the passing of Dantata, saying it “marks the end of an era”.

Reacting to the news via his X (formerly Twitter) account yesterday, Atiku described the death of late Dantata as a monumental loss to the nation.

Former Senate president, Mark, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Paul Mumeh, expressed deep sorrow over the death of Dantata.

In a condolence message to the government and people of Kano State, Mark described the late Dantata as a man of impeccable character, whose life was marked by selfless service, humility, and unwavering commitment to humanity.

Kano State Governor, Yusuf, also expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dantata, describing his demise as an immense loss to the state and the nation.
In a heartfelt condolence message issued by his spokesperson Mr. Sanusu Dawakin Tofa, the governor extended his sympathies to the immediate family of the deceased, the people of Kano, and Nigeria at large.

The governor hailed Alhaji Dantata as a towering figure whose lifetime of dedication, philanthropy, and investments greatly shaped the economic and social landscape of Kano.

Similarly, northern governors, under the aegis of NSGF, expressed deep sorrow over the death of Dantata, describing his passing as a significant loss to Nigeria.
The Chairperson of NSGF and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, who described the death as a national loss, said: “It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of national loss that I, on behalf of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, mourn the passing of elder statesman and one of Africa’s most accomplished businessmen and philanthropists, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata.

“His demise marks the end of a remarkable era defined by enterprise, generosity, humility, and integrity,” he said.

On his part, Obi expressed his sadness over “the exit of a business mogul who changed the face of business in Northern Nigeria”.

The former governor of Anambra State described the late Dantata as “a humble man who was outstanding in leadership.”

In a separate statement by his Media office, Obi said:

”His humility, compassion, and simplicity, even in vast wealth, are virtues worth emulating. He uplifted not just Nigeria’s economy but the Nigerian people through his wisdom in commerce and his philanthropy.”

Similarly, Ganduje, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Edwin Olofu, described the late Dantata as a pillar of commerce, philanthropy, and community development, whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

On her part, the acting National Chairperson of LP, Senator Usman, in a condolence message, recalled that the late Dantata believed in mentorship and investment in human capital development.

She pointed out that the late businessman’s drive and foresight led to “the remarkable success of his nephew, Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest man, whose story continues to reflect the enduring impact of Alhaji Dantata’s belief in building people, not just businesses.”

Also, a northern group, CNG, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Dantata.

In a statement, the National Coordinator of CNG, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, described the late Dantata as a pioneer whose contributions to Nigeria’s economic and social development were both foundational and transformative.

Born on May 19, 1931, Dantata was the 15th of 17 children in a family with a storied history in commerce and enterprise.

He was the son of Alhassan Dantata, a legendary merchant who laid the foundation of a business empire that would span generations.

Aminu Dantata began his education at Dala Primary School in 1938 and completed his studies in 1949 through home education at a private school established by his father.

He joined the family business, Alhassan Dantata & Sons, in 1948 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the head of the company in 1960 after the death of his brother and former managing director, Ahmadu Dantata.

Under his leadership, the Dantata business empire expanded its interests across several industries, including construction, petroleum, finance, and manufacturing.

He was the founder of Express Petroleum & Gas Company Ltd. and played a significant role in the establishment of Jaiz Bank, Nigeria’s first non-interest banking institution.

His influence extended to public service. In 1968, he was appointed Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, and Industry in Kano State under Governor Audu Bako.

He also served on the board of the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank and was part of Nigeria’s first global economic mission after independence.
During Nigeria’s indigenisation policy era in the 1970s, Dantata’s companies acquired stakes in prominent firms, including Mentholatum, SCOA, Funtua Cotton Seed Crushing Company, and Raleigh Industries.

Dantata for Burial in Saudi Arabia, Kano Holds Absentia Funeral Prayer

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the prayer, held at the Umar Bin Khattab Mosque in the Kano metropolis, was led by Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, Chairman of the Kano State Council of Ulamas.

Thousands of sympathisers, including prominent personalities such as the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, attended the prayer to honour the memory of the deceased.

Speaking after the prayers, Khalil described the late Dantata as a devout Muslim, philanthropist, and community leader who lived a life of service and humility.
NAN also reported that “he is expected to be buried in Madina, Saudi Arabia, in accordance with family arrangements.”

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The promoters of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) have commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the acknowledgement of its application for registration as a political party.

INEC had in its acknowledgment letter dated June 27 and signed by the Secretary of the commission, Rose Anthony, said: ”Your letter dated ‘19 June 2025’ on the above subject is acknowledged.

”The commission is processing your application in line with the provision of Part 1, clause 2(\i) of our Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022. Accept the assurances of the commission’s high regard,” INEC said.

Reacting, the secretary of the National Coalition for Opposition Group, Dr. Umar Ardo, commended INEC for the prompt response to its application seeking to be registered as a political party.

“Pointedly, it shows how INEC has displayed a positive reaction since ADA submitted its application.

”Within five days of the submission, the commission came out with clear statements indicating its impartiality and readiness to do the right thing, and published all associations that applied.

”And within a week, we got an acknowledgement letter to our application and assurance that it is being processed. With this reaction, the success or failure of our application now rests solely on the coalition group.

”All we need now to be registered in the shortest possible time are two things – comply in full with the requirements of the law and, by our membership, demonstrate to INEC and Nigerians that we are indeed capable of forming a political party that can win all elections in the country. And that can only be achieved if the coalition group remains united,” Ardo stated.

*Insistsfrustrationis part of APC one-party agenda

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday, insisted it would go ahead with its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC), explaining that the regulatory body overstepped the regulations and guidelines for political parties signed in 2022.

The acting national chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum, had on May 30th, 2025 written to the INEC, intimating it with the forthcoming 100th NEC meeting.

But INEC replied through the acting secretary, Harilu Aminu, and told the PDP that the letter did not follow due compliance as the acting national chairman and the national secretary of the party ought to sign the letter.

However, addressing the media at the  national secretariat of the PDP yesterday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said by the recent judgement of the Supreme Court, political parties were allowed to organise its internal affairs.

He explained that both the meetings of the National Working Committee, NWC and the National Executive Committee, NEC were part of the internal affairs of the party.

”By the PDP constitution, the NWC meetings hold fortnightly, while  the NEC meeting holds every quarter. These are part of the PDP constitution. The meetings of these statutory bodies are Constitutional and therefore do not require the permission of INEC to hold such meetings,” he said.

Asked why PDP wrote INEC about the meeting, Ologunagba said, “We wrote INEC out of mere courtesy that we as the oldest political party is holding a 100th NEC meeting.”

He also queried the mood the INEC delivered the letter to PDP, stating that the letter from INEC was already in the social space four days before the letter was sent to the party

Ologunagba said this was part of the process of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of driving home its one-party agenda by manipulating INEC

The spokesman of PDP said the decision to hold the NEC meeting was a decision of the 99th NEC meeting

”At that 99th NEC meeting, you recall that NEC unanimous scheduled and approved the 30th of June for the next NEC meeting, which is about a week from now.

”That 100th meeting, which is coming on the 30th of June, duly and unanimously convened by the NEC. And of course, there was a communique read at the end of that meeting, where the chairman of the party conveyed the resolution.

”You’ll recall at that meeting, two other critical decisions were taken. One, the constitution of the main officers of the zoning committee, and of course, the convention committee.

”And the NWC was directed to begin in consultation with various organs of the party and stakeholders and interests to ensure that the population of those committees are populated.

”So the 100th meeting is to have a review of this process. And so, our members, the members of the National Executive Committee are ready, and they’re preparing from the fillers we’re getting, that they’re ready to participate actively at the next National Executive Committee meeting, which is being scheduled by the NEC for the 30th day of June.

”There are two major bodies in the party, the NWC and the NEC, that are required under the constitution.  Under section 29, subsection 3 of the constitution of the party, I just want to bring you up to speed with this, so that you have a background of our understanding of how we operate as a party.

”The National Working Committee, under section 29, 3, is expected to meet at least twice a month, every fortnight, because they are the managers of the party. Then section 34, subsection 4, talks about the National Executive Committee meeting.

”The National Executive Committee shall meet at least once every quarter at the instance of the National Chairman or at the request of a third of NEC members who shall notify the Chairman at least seven days prior to this meeting and an emergency meeting may be summoned by the National Executive Committee.

”At that meeting, a motion moved by the governor of Oyo State, seconded by the minority leader in the Senate, Senator Abba Moro, was approved that the 100th meeting should take place.

”And then there was a further direction that INEC should be informed by way of courtesy. It must be clear that INEC has no role whatsoever in participating in regular meetings of these bodies that I’ve drawn to you. They have no role at all.

”And then you can see some of the distressing things coming from INEC, which of course is very unfortunate,” Ologunagba stated, adding that, ”There are exception and those are the issues that the Supreme Court has said, are internal affairs of the party.”

*Says country taken hostage by monumental corruption

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has said that the latest alleged “financial irregularities” at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) unearthed by the Senate confirmed his position that Nigeria has become “a crime scene.”
His reaction came 48 hours after the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, examining the books of the oil company from 2017 to 2023, alleged that over N210 trillion could not be accounted for.

The figure included N103 trillion categorised as “accrued expenses” and another N107 trillion classified as “receivables”, which the committee said were contained in the audited accounts of the NNPCL.

Alarmed by the development, the committee, which is chaired by Senator Aliyu Wadada, raised 11 questions for the NNPCL to answer within one week, though a team led by the Chief Financial Officer of the company, Mr. Dapo Segun, relentlessly disputed the conclusions of the committee.

Taking to his X handle at the weekend, Obi tweeted, “It is with the utmost sadness that I once again reaffirm what I have consistently said: Nigeria has become a crime scene.

“How else does one explain the recent revelation by the Senate, which uncovered the audited accounts of the NNPC from 2017 to 2023? The Senate uncovered N210 trillion in financial irregularities, N103 trillion in so-called ‘accrued expenses’, and another N107 trillion in unaccounted ‘receivables. No documentation. No accountability. No consequences.

“This is not just another scandal, it is a clear and damning confirmation of a nation held hostage by monumental corruption.”

Obi said he was dumbfounded that the amount in question was way higher than the country’s total national budget for the period under review (2017-2023).
He wrote, “Our national budget within the said period of 2017 to 2023 is as follows: 2017, N7.440 trillion. 2018, N9.120 trillion. 2019 N8.916 trillion.

“(In) 2020, N10.590 was initially approved and in June revised to N9.974 trillion due to COVID-19; 2021, N13.588 trillion. 2022 N17.130 trillion. 2023 N21.830 trillion. Total: N88.010 trillion.

“Our total national budget within the said period was not up to 50% of the said financial discrepancies and irregularities.

“This is a criminal institutionalised betrayal of the Nigerian people and a grave threat to the future of the society our children will live in.

“No responsible nation can continue to function like this without confronting this truth. This criminality masquerading as governance must be stopped and dismantled for a better Nigeria.”

* Atiku, David Mark, Ardo, Amaechi, Obi, Aregbesola listed among conveners*Keyamo mocks group, says it’s unnecessary hype, weak attempt at mass appeal

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

In a bold move to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, key opposition figures have united to form a new political front—the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

The coalition, comprising politicians from multiple parties and ideological backgrounds, has begun the formal process of registering the alliance with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Seen as a strategic attempt to consolidate opposition strength and present a unified alternative to the APC, the ADA signals the beginning of what could become one of the most fiercely contested electoral battles in Nigeria’s democratic history.

But the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has described the furore surrounding the announcement as an unnecessary hype and a weak attempt at mass appeal.

Keyamo while commenting on the development on his X-handle (formerly Twitter), wrote: “This is just a simple application for party registration. There is nothing like a ‘coalition’ here. It is unnecessary hype. The promoters have been struggling to create all along; it is just a psychological warfare on Nigerians – a weak attempt at mass appeal.”

According to the minister, “no recognised existing political party or parties are part of this. If they are thinking of recreating what the APC did in 2013, then this is nothing but a pedestrian joke; a complete mockery of that seismic political coalition that birthed APC in 2013.

“A few individuals exercising their constitutional right to form a new political party cannot be described as a ‘coalition’ or even a ‘merger’.

“This is not different from several political associations springing up everyday for the same purpose. After all the razzmatazz, it boils down to the fact that a new political party is just attempting registration by a few Nigerians; it is a disappointing anti-climax to all the preceding pomp and pageantry.”

The ADA has its address on 23 Fatai Williams Street in Asokoro, Abuja.

Ƶ learnt that those at the meeting when the decision to register ADA was taken were former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, John Odigie Oyegun, Rauf Aregbesola, Nasir El-Rufai, Aminu Tambuwal, Abubakar Malami, Babachir Lawan, Uche Secondus, Osita Chidoka and Hon. Nnenna Ukeje.
In a letter dated June 20, 2025, submitted to the office of the National Chairman of INEC seeking for registration, the coalition wrote: ”We respectfully write to INEC requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), as a political party.

”This is sequel to the decision taken by the Nigerian National Coalition Group to sponsor our association for full registration.

”The name of the party shall be All Democratic Alliance, with ADA as our acronym and Justice for All as our slogan. The National Secretariat of the party is as stated at the bottom of the association’s letterhead used in this application.

”We have also herewith attached our Logo, describing in details the symbolism of our party, colours and their configuration and the corn (maize). “We have further attached our Manifesto, encapsulating details of our party ideology, and our constitution providing the legal framework that defines our identity, structures our organisation, regulates our affairs and guides our actions in alignment with Sections 40 and 222 of the Constitution, Section 75 of the Electoral Act (2022) and global democratic principles and objectives.”

Officials of the ADA further submitted other documents to INEC for the registration of the new party.

They added, “Please find attached the following documents:, ”Our Party Logo (flag) depicting our Name, Acronym and Slogan, Manifesto;
Constitution, and Minutes of Meeting,

”While we eagerly await further action from the Commission on the next step forward towards attaining our desired goal, please accept the consideration of our highest respect.”

The letter was signed by Chief Akin Rickett as pro tem National Chairman and Hon. Musa Elayo as the pro tem National Secretary.

In addition, officials of the ADA submitted minutes of their meeting where the decision to form the new party was reached.

According to the letter submitted to INEC, ”The National Opposition Coalition Group (NOCG), made up of critical and reputable national political figures chaired by former Senate President, Senator David Mark, met in Abuja Tuesday, 6th May, 2025 and set up a New Platform Committee consisting of 15 members and mandated it to form an association for the purpose of applying to INEC with a view to registering a new political party.”

The minutes of the letter further stated, ”Series of meetings were held, subcommittees were constituted and reports were submitted to the Platform Committee leading to the meeting and resolutions below.”

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

Governors of the 36 states of the federation have agreed to dismantle illegal road blocks and multiple taxes across the country.

They made the resolution after a meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in Abuja, which ended early Thursday.

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who read the communique at the end of the meeting, said the governors resolved to dismantle illegal road blocks and multiple taxes, which they said contributed to food inflation in the country.

The communique was signed by NGF Chairman and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

It read, “The forum received a briefing from the National Security Adviser (NSA), accompanied by the Honourable Ministers of Defence, Agriculture, Livestock Development, and Transportation, on the rising cost of food and livestock transportation across the country.

“The presentation revealed that the proliferation of checkpoints, illegal taxation, and poor infrastructure are key contributors to price inflation and inefficiencies in the food supply chain.

“The NSA noted that a high-level inter-ministerial committee has been established to address these concerns and has submitted its recommendations for the endorsement of the forum.

“Governors acknowledged the urgency of the matter and expressed commitment to collaborate with federal authorities to streamline levies, dismantle unauthorized checkpoints, and improve the movement of goods across states.”

The NSA, Nuhu Ribadu, declined comments on the outcome of the meeting with the governors.

The emergency session came at a time of heightened insecurity in several parts of the country, with increasing calls for both federal and state authorities to take coordinated action.

*Orders security chiefs toimplement earlierdirectiveforlastingpeace, security

*Tasks Alia to convene reconciliation meeting among warring factions to end bloodshed

*PopeLeo XIV, northern CAN condemn massacre, pray for victims, sue for peace

President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, described the recent killings in Benue State as depressing, declaring this must stop, as government will not let the bloodletting in the state continue.

Tinubu directed security chiefs to implement his earlier directive to bring lasting peace and security to Benue State.

He called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to convene a meeting of the warring factions for lasting peace.

Pope Leo XIV, yesterday, expressed deep sorrow at the murderous attack on Benue State, which resulted in the massacre of about 200 persons. The pope spoke during Mass at the Vatican. He offered solemn prayers for the deceased and Nigeria, in general.

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) called on Tinubu to declare war on criminal elements unleashing mayhem on communities in Benue State and other states in the region.

Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Deputy Governor of Benue State, Sam Ode; former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi; and Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) condemned the cold-blooded killings as shocking.

Benue State Youths converged at Wurukum Roundabout early yesterday morning in protest against the unremitting carnage in the state by suspected Fulani herdsmen. They were later tear-gased by policemen deployed to the area.

The attacks in Benue State occurred at night between June 13 and 14 in the town of Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area.

Ƶ gathered that most of the victims were internally displaced persons receiving care at a hospital operated by a local Catholic mission.

Tinubu, in a statement by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, renewed his order in the wake of the latest round of attacks, which had led to the death of many people.

On the president’s directive, intelligence chiefs, the police, and the military have arrived the state to direct security operations and restore sanity.

Tinubu Alia to convene reconciliation meetings and dialogue among the warring parties to end the bloodshed and bring lasting peace and harmonious co-existence between herders and the indigenous communities.

Describing the killings as inhuman and anti-progress, the president called on political leaders and community leaders in conflict areas to stop fuelling the crisis through unguarded utterances that could further inflame tensions. He said leaders should rein in those who were out to cause provocations and ignite reprisal attacks.

The statement quoted Tinubu as saying, “The latest news of wanton killings in Benue State is very depressing. We must not allow this bloodletting to continue unabated. Enough is now enough.

“I have directed the security agencies to act decisively and arrest perpetrators of these evil acts on all sides of the conflict and prosecute them.

“Political and community leaders in Benue State must act responsibly and avoid inflammatory utterances that could further increase tensions and killings.”

The president said, “This is the time for Governor Alia to act as a statesman and immediately lead the process of dialogue and reconciliation that will bring peace to Benue.

“Our people must live in peace, and it is possible when leaders across the divides work together in harmony and differences are identified and addressed with fairness, openness and justice.”

Pope Prays for Victims, Seeks Peace

Pope Leo XIV expressed deep sorrow at the recent attack on Benue, during Mass at the Vatican, offering prayers for the deceased and Nigeria, in general.

Describing the killings as a “terrible massacre” carried out with “extreme cruelty,” the pope called for an end to the cycle of violence.

He said, “A terrible massacre took place, in which about 200 people were killed, with extreme cruelty, most of whom were internally displaced, hospitalised by the local Catholic mission.”

Visibly moved during his remarks at the Vatican, the pope called for an end to the ongoing cycle of violence plaguing Nigeria, a country he referred to as “beloved” but “so affected by various forms of violence”.

He stated, “I pray that security, justice and peace prevail in Nigeria, a beloved country, so affected by various forms of violence. And I pray, in particular, for the rural Christian communities of Benue State, which have been incessantly victims of violence.”

The pope’s statement added to the growing international condemnation of the persistent violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, a region often wracked by sectarian and communal conflict.

The pope urged the global community not to forget those suffering in silence. He called on the Nigerian authorities to uphold the safety and dignity of all citizens.

CAN to Tinubu:Declare Total War on Criminals Terrorising Benue, Borno, Others

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) called on Tinubu to declare war on criminal elements terrorising communities in Benue State.
CAN also urged the government to stop the resurgence of the activities of Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State.

The association, in a statement yesterday in Kaduna, urged the president to urgently take decisive action to end the bloodshed and destructions.
The statement, signed by  Secretary General of Northern CAN, Sunday Oibe, condemned Saturday’s killings  in Benue communities, declaring that the persistent attacks  by suspected herdsmen are unacceptable.

The association expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Benue, Borno, and other parts of the country.

Oibe stated that the violent activities perpetrated by suspected herdsmen and Boko Haram terrorists had made life increasingly unbearable for innocent citizens.

The statement said, “On Saturday, June 13, 2025,  we received distressing reports of attacks by suspected herdsmen in  Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
“Available information indicated that over 100 people were killed in the attacks, which occurred less than 48 hours after the tragic killing of 25 people in Mtswenem and Akondotyough Bawa communities in Makurdi LGA
“Reports indicated that many internally displaced persons (IDPs) and farmers were killed, with some reportedly burnt alive in makeshift shelters.

“The gunmen,  armed with sophisticated weapons, were said to have launched the attack around midnight and operated for over two hours.
“Similarly, last week in Borno State, one person was killed, while Rev. Fr. Daniel Afina, a Catholic priest and project coordinator of a Christian NGO, along with nine others, were abducted by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on the Gwoza-Limankara Road as they were ambushed while returning from Mubi in Adamawa State.”

Oibe lamented that the security situation appeared to be worsening at a time when it seemed that the criminal elements had been contained by security agencies.

He said in the statement, “We urgently call on the federal government to take decisive and comprehensive action to stop the killings and restore peace and security.

“President Bola Tinubu’s administration has made initial progress in curbing these violent activities. However, these gains must be sustained and expanded.

“We urge the president to urgently declare total war against these criminals and direct security agencies to neutralise the threat within a clear and enforceable time frame.

“Should the situation prove beyond the capacity of Nigeria’s security forces, the government should seek international assistance to halt the killings and abductions.
“The killings are unacceptable, even within the animal kingdom. This brutality is rare, yet, in Nigeria, innocent lives are lost senselessly and repeatedly.”

OdeCondemnsKillingsin Yelwata

Deputy Governor of Benue State, Sam Ode, who visited the scene of the bloodshed on the directives of the governor, said the governor was not resting on his oars in efforts to ensure the state experienced peace.

Ode stated, “Governor Hyacinth Alia acknowledges and shares in the pains and grief caused by the this attacks on the community by criminal elements suspected to be armed herdsmen.

“The state government is consistently engaging with federal security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders to strengthen security interventions and provide lasting solutions to these persistent attacks.

“We assure citizens that more tactical teams have started arriving to Benue from the federal government and additional security deployments are being arranged for vulnerable areas.

“Response squad teams are also deployed and will be in Benue from Sunday, strategic community dialogues are ongoing to enhance active intelligence sharing.”

Ode added, “The state’s joint operations units are also being strengthened, and will not relent in its utmost commitment to defending the lives and properties of all residents.

“In the spirit of peace and unity, we call on religious, traditional, and political leaders across the state to sensitise and guide the youths under their influence against unlawful gatherings or confrontations that may spiral out of control.

“We appeal to the public to make use of official communication channels to report any suspicious activities and to stay informed through credible sources.

“Benue State remains committed to justice, peace, and security for all.”

AtikuShockedoverFreshBenue Attacks

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed shock and anguish at the killings in Benue State.

Atiku called on the federal government to move in and ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous crimes were arrested and prosecuted

In a statement, the former vice president lamented that the killers were targeting defenceless Nigerians.

He suggested, “Enhanced security presence in the region, deploying necessary resources, personnel, equipment, and intelligence to guarantee the protection of vulnerable rural areas.”

Atiku stated, “I am deeply anguished and shocked by the devastating news of the fresh attacks in Benue State, where over 100 innocent lives are feared lost.

“These killings, once again targeting defenceless communities, underscores the escalating insecurity crisis facing our nation. Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt by those left widowed, orphaned, or displaced.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and communities who have suffered unimaginable loss. As a nation, we must pause and reflect on the mounting human toll of this senseless violence.

“I urge the federal government and Benue State authorities to launch a prompt, transparent investigation into the attack.

“The identities of the perpetrators must be swiftly uncovered and justice served.”

The former vice president said the federal government should, “Enhance security presence in the region, deploying necessary resources, personnel, equipment, and intelligence to guarantee the protection of vulnerable rural areas.

“Engage affected communities through dialogue, traditional leadership, and civil society to restore confidence and foster resilience.

“Accelerate compensation and support effort, including medical aid, trauma counselling, and livelihood restoration for survivors and bereaved families.”

He said, “This assault on innocent Nigerians is not just a local tragedy, it is a national emergency that demands immediate attention and decisive action.

“I call on all Nigerians, regardless of tribe or religion, to unite in condemning this atrocity. We must hold our leaders accountable and insist on sustainable solutions to the violent tragedies claiming lives across the country.

“May God comfort the grieving families, heal our nation, and help us reclaim peace and security for all.”

Obi: KillingsShowLeadershipFailure

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, condemned the Benue killings, describing them as a direct consequence of leadership failure in Nigeria.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Obi expressed heartbreak over the attacks, which claimed the lives of women, children, soldiers, and displaced persons.

He called for an urgent national response, warning against the growing normalisation of mass killings in the country.

Bi stated, “My heart is heavy as I learn of yet another horrific series of killings in Benue of women, children, soldiers, and displaced persons, all senselessly slain.

“This tragedy has become too common in our national life, and the Benue situation now calls for a national emergency.”

According to the former Anambra State governor, the scale of the killings go beyond isolated violence, but reflects systemic governance failure.

“Over 200 lives have reportedly been extinguished in a single onslaught, homes burnt, families shattered, communities left in ruin. This is not merely violence. It is a failure of leadership, a stain on our collective conscience,” Obi stated.

HURIWA Warns of Looming Ethnic War

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) issued a stern warning to the federal government, urging it to urgently halt the continuous attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen or risk widespread armed resistance by other ethnic groups in the country.

The rights group described the recent massacre of over 200 persons in Benue State as a crime against humanity and a dangerous escalation that could spiral into nationwide ethnic violence.

HURIWA gave the warning in a press statement issued in Abuja by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, following the bloody attack by herdsmen on the Tiv-speaking Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The group said despite prior intelligence from residents about the impending attack, the federal government and security agencies failed to intervene or deploy adequate forces to the area.

HURIWA alleged that attackers stormed the communities from two flanks, overpowered local youths and police operatives, and then proceeded to open fire on defenceless civilians, including IDPs sheltering in market stalls.

HURIWA condemned what it termed the “persistent inaction” of the federal government, describing the security chiefs and the National Security Adviser as grossly incompetent and complicit.

The association warned that should the government fail to act decisively to bring an end to the targeted killings allegedly carried out by armed Fulani insurgents, Nigeria might descend into an unprecedented civil crisis, as ethnic groups facing continued invasions might begin to arm themselves for self-defence.

Benue Youths Protest Killings

Benue State Youths converged at Wurukum Roundabout on Sunday morning to protest the killings of innocent people in Benue State by murderous Fulani herdsmen. But they were teargased by policemen deployed to the area.

The protests had been triggered by the gruesome attacks on Yelewata town yesterday by suspected herdsmen, which resulted in the deaths of almost 200 persons, including women and children, as well as the aged.

The protesters demanded action from Governor Hyacinth Alia and the federal government against the terrorists, who were on a rampage across the state.

The protesters had refused to be addressed by Benue State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, who went personally to the protest venue.

The police commissioner initially sought to address the protesting youths but he was loudly condemned amid angry chants of “CP, Go To Yelewata”.

And when he eventually addressed them, he was confronted with some questions that he declined to answer, stirring another round of anger.

It was also observed that while some military personnel arrived the venue of the protest, the youths continued to press their demands for action from government.

An activist, Comrade Bemgba Iyortyum, wrote on his Facebook page, “I urge the youths to maintain their peaceful and orderly conduct as has been seen in the course of the protest so far, and to stand resolutely by their demands for action from government.

“Together we will win this war against the terrorists who seek to wipe us off the face of the earth and take over our land.”

*Laments public policy responses to insecurity situation remain ineffective

*Women, southeastgroupmobilise support for president

Chuks Okocha in AbujaandSylvester Idowu in Warri

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has criticized President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for being more obsessed with early re-election campaigns and defections to their fold ahead of the 2027 elections as against national concerns.

The group, which said rather than address the security challenges and other existential challenges confronting the nation, the public policies of the administration has remained ineffective.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Professor Muhammad-Baba, the ACF lamented that public policy responses to the insecurity situation, especially in the Northern part of the country, has remained ineffective, even as profligacy and reckless expenditures by public officials were in contrast to sacrifices by citizens.

“A most perverse illustration of reckless profligacy of public expenditure has been the revelation about insertions, in the 2025 federal budget, for the provision of streetlights at a staggering and unimaginable costs of over N260 million Naira each.

“That there has to date been no official denial of such crassly reckless and surreal insertions attests to the insensitivity of public officials and political representatives to the plight of ordinary Nigerians, whose living conditions continue to deteriorate all round.

“Going by precedent, such budgetary insertions are replicated in various ways at state level. As ACF observed a year ago, the existential challenges above are symptomatic of fundamental malaise in the political economy calling for urgent public policy attention.

“Delusional hubris and head-in-the-sand claims continue to characterise pronouncement by officials charged with responsibilities for security in contrast to cries of state governors on ground in locations. Such obsessions and claims only ignore or give blind eyes to possible mass disillusionment, despair, discontent, hopelessness and angst of the populace.

“That Nigerians continue to endure and could even celebrate occasions such as the Eid is a telling testament to their admirable resilience, which ought not to be taken for granted,” the group said.

The forum also felicitated with the Muslim communities in Nigeria on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir celebration, describing it as solemn reminder of the need for humanity’s values of sacrifice, fellowship and devotion in appreciation of Almighty God’s Benevolence.

It noted that the Eid-el-Kabir celebration came amid struggles under economic-cum-existential challenges, ranging from dire costs of living expenses, inflation, rapid deterioration in the value of wages and salaries among others.

ACF, however, praised Nigerians over their resilience, asserting that national challenges as enumerated by the Forum, can be overcome by the entrenchment of the principles of good governance in public officials at local, state and federal levels.

Women, SoutheastGroup Plan Mass Grassroots Mobilisationfor Tinubuin 2027

Meanwhile, agroup, FOOG Women Support Groupfor Asiwaju has promised to mobilise support for the re-election of Tinubu in 2027.

Facilitator of the group, Chief (Mrs.) Esther Okotie-Eboh, the Iye of Warri Kingdom, made the promise, weekend, during the inauguration ofthe groupin Warri, Delta State.

She said the women in Nigeria have scored President Bola Tinubu ‘s renewed hope agenda, anchored on human, capital and infrastructuredevelopment, very high noting that the president deserves a second term to drive the robust vision to completion.

Chief Okotie-Eboh said FOOG was formed to rally support for good leadership, good governance and sustainable development in the country, stressing that they already found the sterling qualities in the federal government driven by President Tinubu.

Also, a group of young professionals from the South East, under the aegis of South East Progressive Ambassadors (SEPA), has called for support from Ndigbo, for the re-election of Tinubu.

The group, in a statement by its convener, Mr John Ikeotuonye, and the secretary, Dr Justin Ogoo Nwankwo, said it would be to the disadvantage of the zone not to support Tinubu in 2027.

It, however, expressed optimism that people of the zone were already buying into the renewed hope agenda of the president, and that the message has started sinking gradually.

The group expressed the hope that in 2027, the people would vote massively for the reelection of the President.

*APC backs call for Mutfwang to join party

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has challenged Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State to stop his ‘hide and seek’ game over secret plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Matawalle, a former governor of Zamfara State, said instead of Lawal to be hiding in the day and appearing at night, he should be bold enough to come out in the open and follow the proper channel to join the APC as against the kind of game he was playing.

This was as the North Central wing of the APC has  called on the  Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, to defect from the PDP to the APC.  This is coming after the defection of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, over the weekend.

Matawalle, who spoke in Maradun when he received his supporters who paid him a Sallah homage, said the APC was a party of leaders with humility and respect, and therefore advised Lawal to join the progressives through laid down process for the progress of the state.

A statement by Ibrahim Dosara, former Commissioner for Information in Zamfara State, quoted Matawalle as saying he would harbour no grudges if Lawal joined the APC.

According to the minister, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a progressives leader, is a good manager of peace and tranquility and is always focusing on the development of the country and welcomes all wishing to join the APC.”

He assured his teeming supporters of his commitment to their welfare and wellbeing and urged them to continue to support the administration of Tinubu for the realisation of its Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in the areas of security, agriculture, health, social wellbeing and economic development.

He said Tinubu had Zamfara at heart and was always looking forward to salvaging its current insecurity situation and economic hardship.

The minister noted the efforts by the Tinubu administration in eliminating several terrorists Kingpins and their foot soldiers, who were hitherto terrorising Zamfara State, the Northwest geopolitical zone and the county at large.

He also said Tinubu recently ordered security operatives to bring to an end, the spate of insecurity in northern Nigeria before the end of the year, adding that the Federal Ministry of Defence and the security high commands were working out modalities and modus operandi to ensure compliance with the presidential directives.

Matawalle accused Lawal of failing to do the needful in the fight against banditry in the state, but instead, preferred to deceive the people.

According to him, when he served as the governor of the state, people enjoyed and witnessed rapid development and meticulous clamping down on insecurity, and promoted freedom, welfare and social wellbeing of the people of state.

“Unlike the current happenings under Lawal’s administration in the state, where people including members of the PDP are grumbling under the current leadership in the state, these were far better in the state.

Matawalle noted that unlike his tenure with little resources of between N3 to N4 billion per month, the present administration in the state receives between 19 to 24 billion naira monthly from federal allocation.

He, therefore, challenged Lawal to disclose the amount of money accruing to the state on monthly basis to justify the development projects he claimed to have executed.

APC Backs Call for Mutfwang to Join APC

The North-Central APC Forum has called on the  Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, to defect from the PDP to the APC, saying its call was supported by the party’s national leadership.

The Forum has been urging Mutfwang to join the APC. But the campaign has met resistance from some APC leaders in the state, who feared that his defection might automatically hand him control of the party’s structure and the 2027 governorship ticket.

Tensions rose after the Forum endorsed the “Green Cap Movement”—a symbol associated with Mutfwang and his supporters—for the 2027 governorship election in Plateau.

While the Forum insisted this was part of its strategy to woo the governor, some party leaders condemned the move as anti-party and called for sanctions.

As a result, there have been calls for the suspension of the Forum’s chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga.

Notably, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, APC’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, has questioned Zazzaga’s loyalty and commitment to the party.

In a statement in Abuja, Zazzaga, a member of the APC Campaign Council for the 2023 elections, emphasised that the Forum’s outreach to Mutfwang had the blessing of the APC national leadership.

“The North-Central APC Forum is warning those opposing Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s potential defection to the APC to desist from their unprogressive stance. Our campaign is based on a directive from above,” the statement read.

Zazzaga criticised those opposing the move, labeling them as the true perpetrators of anti-party activities, and warned them to “tread with caution,” asserting that efforts to welcome Mutfwang were intended to strengthen the party, not divide it.

“The APC belongs to no individual. As stakeholders committed to the party’s progress in the North-Central, we believe progressive leaders like Governor Mutfwang should be welcomed,” he added.

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has accused President Bola Tinubu of perfecting procedural manipulation of the 2027 general election by putting in place a smart set of systems and manipulative processes to effectively gain absolute control and command of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

HURIWA said one of the procedural manipulations of the system was the deliberate appointment of well-known All Progressives Congress (APC) card-carrying members as National Commissioners.

It also accused Tinubu of compelling second term seeking PDP serving governors to enlist into the APC as decoys for writing the results of the elections in their jurisdictions.

A statement by the National coordinator of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, stated that the development formed the basis why the National Chairman of the APC, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, openly boasted that his political party would win over two-thirds of the states of the federation and keep a commanding control and leadership of the National Assembly.

The rights group expressed the hope that the organised civil society organisations would be able to put measures in place to expose the apparent well-contrived and well-funded election manipulation procedures of the ruling APC.

“By illegally staging a regime change in Rivers State and unconstitutionally suspending the governor Siminalayi Fubara so as to force him into a sudden surrender, is a well-coordinated strategy by the APC to rig the result of the 2027 election in Rivers State even before the first ballot is cast.

“These public outbursts of the handpicked National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress that more PDP Governors and lawmakers would move into APC soon is not a fluke but a revelation of the inner workings of the National ruling party and their electoral strategy for 2027.

“The APC is plotting to establish a China-styled communist one party state in Nigeria. The blueprint for turning Nigeria into an authoritarianism is already being systematically enforced by the APC,” it stressed.

• Atiku, Tambuwal, Oyegun, Aregbesola differ with Amaechi’s camp over party

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The National Opposition Coalition Group led by the former Senate President, Senator David Mark, which had fixed a meeting for Friday, May 30, 2025, to decide on the choice of political party to be adopted by the coalition, failed to meet as scheduled, Ƶ has learnt.

The coalition had wanted to decide either to join an existing political party – African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the Social Democratic Party (SDP), or to register a new political party.

The failure of the group to meet, it was learnt, followed the inability of the members to reach an agreement on the available options.

Ƶ gathered that the discussions between the group and the SDP, which were led by a former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai have reached a dead end.

It was also learnt that the League of Northern Democrats (LND), which is clamouring for the registration of new party, seems to be making concrete progress as many members of the coalition, who had preferred joining an existing political party have shifted ground.

The push for the coalition to join the ADC was being championed by former vice president, Atiku Abubukar; former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ex-Governor of Edo State, Chief John Oyegun; former governor of Sokoto State and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Bello Tambuwal and former governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola.

However, former governor of Rivers State and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and others have thrown their weight behind the registration of a new party, Alliance for Democratic Alliance (ADA)

The position of Amaechi camp was said to have been boosted by a written submission to the National Opposition Coalition Group’s leadership, by a select member of the LND.

In the document submitted on May 29 and signed by the Convener, LND, Dr. Umar Ardo; Chairman, LND Security Committee, Air Vice Marshal Monday Morgan (rtd.); member, LND Strategic Planning Committee, Dr. Mohammed Tumala; among others, the group stated that the clamour for the registration of a new party was necessitated by the need to avoid what they described as “systemic crisis and leadership crisis currently facing the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP).

”After an exhaustive internal review, wide consultations and critical evaluation of the strategic pathways available to the National Opposition Coalition Group ahead of the 2027 general elections, we, select members of the LND in furtherance to our 22 May resolutions, hereby issue the following unanimous resolutions: “We conclude that it is best advantageous for the opposition to register a new party platform, presenting the most viable, principled and sustainable path forward,” the group said.

”The ADC, SDP and similar existing parties already possess entrenched ward, local government, state and zonal structures whose leadership tenures remain legally binding and often deeply resistant to reform. For instance, the ADC Chairman in Adamawa State publicly declared that his mandate, secured in December 2022 in the Zaria convention, remains valid until December 2026; by which time the nominations were long over. This reality exists across the country in all existing parties.

“Fusing into such parties without full and prior harmonisation of interests and control of these structures invites chaos, factionalism, litigation and paralysis.

“We note the unfortunate breakdown of the NNPP fusion arrangement involving Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, which devolved into disputes over leadership and candidacy even before primaries were concluded. “Without sounding negative, the same fate may well befall any hasty fusion lacking ideological clarity or unified control.

“Contrary to certain fears, the timeframe between now and the 2027 elections is sufficient for a serious and focused coalition to register and build a credible new political party. Nigeria’s democratic space provides adequate legal and operational room to do so, as long as the process begins now,” the group added.

Onanuga Defends Tinubu’s Reforms, Says President Tackling Problems Created by Past Administrations /2025/06/01/onanuga-defends-tinubus-reforms-says-president-tackling-problems-created-by-past-administrations/ /2025/06/01/onanuga-defends-tinubus-reforms-says-president-tackling-problems-created-by-past-administrations/#respond Sun, 01 Jun 2025 04:58:53 +0000 /?p=1088493

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, has urged Nigerians to give the president credit for tackling problems that past governments, including those under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ignored, especially the issue of arbitrage in the forex market.
Onanuga, who made this statement during an interview on ARISE NEWS Channel on Friday, said many Nigerians blamed Tinubu for the country’s problems because they had “short memory” and often forgot the situation before Tinubu took office.

He said people were too quick to blame the current administration without remembering the state of the country before the President came in.
“Let me start by saying that many of us in this country- many Nigerians, we sometimes exhibit the problem of lack of memory. We have very short memories.
“We forget where we started from and we just started blaming President Tinubu for all the problems that Nigeria is going through,” Onanuga said.
He recalled that Nigeria was already facing a serious fuel crisis when President Tinubu took office in May 2023.

He said fuel scarcity was common during the months leading up to the general election, with long queues and supply shortages across the country.
According to him, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), which was the only fuel importer at the time, had reduced imports because the federal government owed it over ₦4 trillion in unpaid subsidy claims.

He said as a result, NNPC was also unable to pay its foreign suppliers.

He said it was under these difficult conditions that Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidies on his first day in office.

He noted that the move led to an immediate rise in pump prices and efforts by the government to restore fuel supply.

“I remember, for instance, in May 2023 when Tinubu took over the government, there was fuel shortage in this country.

“NNPC was saying that the federal government was owing it over N4 trillion and it was also owing its suppliers abroad. So, what the federal government did, what President Tinubu did, was to bring some life into NNPC to resume importing fuel so that fuel can be available,” he said.

Onanuga said people forgot these facts easily.

He stressed that Nigeria could no longer afford to maintain fuel subsidies because the country lacked the resources.

“And we were just spending the money that ought to belong to the future generation. So, the resources are not there; so, the government just ought to do the right thing. Yeah, problems followed what the President did.”

He said Tinubu’s administration has been open about the challenges that came after removing the subsidy and has rolled out several plans to ease the hardship on citizens.

He also noted that one of the key achievements of the administration was the fixing of the foreign exchange system.

Onanuga urged Nigerians to give the President credit for tackling problems that past governments, including those under the PDP, ignored, especially the issue of arbitrage in the forex market.

“So, I want to start from there and say, look, Nigeria should give this President some credit for stopping the arbitrage that characterised the foreign exchange regime under previous administrations, including PDP.

“But people are just not willing to give him any credit. Some critics.

“But we know that what he has done are very important, are very necessary, and they are for the benefit of our people.

“And we can see the results of the efforts he has done so far. You can see the results, the gains that have accrued to this country, the reforms that have taken place, and the gains are showing and to the benefit of our people,” the media aide concluded.

Anyanwu: PDP LeadersDemarketing the Party /2025/05/31/anyanwu-pdp-leaders-demarketing-the-party/ /2025/05/31/anyanwu-pdp-leaders-demarketing-the-party/#respond Sat, 31 May 2025 03:38:48 +0000 /?p=1088098

The embattled National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Samuel Anyanwu, speaks on the lingering crisis in the main opposition party, saying any attempt to remove him without due process is a wild goose chase. Chuks Okocha brings the excerpts:

Why is the PDP still in crisis over the office of National Secretary?

We’ve had a lot of negative press for some time now about our party, and it’s very disheartening, and I feel very concerned about it. For me, there’s only one group that can make or mar a situation in any organisation, and that’s the press. But so far, we’ve been able to manage, to balance issues that have to do with our party’s crisis. There’s no doubt our party is in crisis. I’m a realist. We’ve had crises, we’ve had issues, and it’s a man-made thing. It’s all about ambition, and it’s very disheartening.  I was elected in October 2021 as National Secretary of this party. According to the zoning, it was zoned to the South, and micro-zoned to the South-east. And just like every other State in the Southeast, it was zoned to Imo state. Every State in the South-east has a representative in the National Working Committee. For instance, the National Deputy Treasurer comes from Enugu State; the National Auditor from Anambra State; and the Deputy National Legal Adviser, Abia State. So you can see that it is wickedness for anybody that wants to take something from Ebonyi State and put it in Anambra State, when positions are evenly disputed. But assuming that I am no longer the National Secretary, for instance, whoever that will replace me must come from Imo State. Besides, National Secretary of a party is for the entire south. I was not elected by only south-east. I was elected at the convention by the entire nation. I represent the nation, but it’s very disheartening that the governor of Enugu State insisted that this must go to Enugu State, when Enugu already has somebody.

What’s your view on the fact-finding report by the PDP Governors and the party’s national caucus?

(He brings out the report) This is a report of the committee set up by the Chairman, Governors Forum to interface with INEC to ascertain the status and position of the commission as regards the National Secretary.  The Committee chaired by Agbu Kefas with Peter Mbah and Dauda Lawal with the National Legal Adviser co-opted.  Peter Mbah met with INEC official and reported to the committee the position/status of the National Secretary thus:  That the commission still recognised Sen. Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the party in consonance with the Supreme Court judgment; that there’s no vacancy to be replaced until Anyanwu is removed in accordance with the constitution of the party; that notice of 21 days should be given to the commission for any of such meeting to remove and or replace an official of the party, and that the NEC meeting should comply with the provision of the party’s constitution and requirements in the Electoral Act in the case of removal/appointment of an official of the party.

The committee resolved to recommend to the forum that the procedure and the processes be followed to complete the acceptance of the recommendation of the South East caucus in order to lay to rest the agitation and put the Party back on track in South East. Also, that the party in NEC should acknowledge the request/ recommendation of the South-east caucus to be considered at the next meeting, amongst other things.  And by the way, is there any vacancy? There’s no vacancy. In 2023, I wrote to the party that I was going to run for an election and I took leave. I wrote to INEC that while I’m on that leave, my deputy will act, and so he did.

But why is the southeast zone bent on removing you?

Before then, the National Vice Chairman of the party Southeast, his tenure was elapsing and he wanted to remain a member of National Committee. He went and conjured, manipulating the governor of Enugu State, making him believe that he can have the National Secretary of the party. I’m sure that the governor himself is not aware that the offices are shared according to States. They jumped into it because he knows that the next National Vice Chairman of Southeast is supposed to come from Enugu State and he knows that he will not get it back. So, he wanted to return because his tenure ended on March 3rd or so. That’s how this whole issue started.  He now connived with his friend, who is Governor Makinde of Oyo State, to pressurise Enugu to bring Ude-Okoye in and they went to court.

So, I wonder how my office will endanger any of them because by December, my tenure will elapse. If of course, I choose not to come back. So why don’t you allow sleeping dog to sleep?

Each time they talk about people destroying the party. All these PDP leaders who go on national television are the ones demarketing the party. Instead of saying issues that can build the party, you are saying things that will destroy and demarket the party and accuse the Minister of FCT, because he’s my friend. I will not take it. If anybody ridicules me, I will never tolerate it for any reason. Every position everybody is having now, in the next two years, a few of them will leave and all of us will meet at the lounge of the airport.  It took me time to build my reputation. I’ve been a two-time local government chairman; two times House of Assembly member, went to the Senate, ran for Governor twice and National Secretary. None of them ever said they supported me in my last election, all the governors contributed money to give to other candidates of the party, but they refused to send even a dime to me, rather, they demanded that I resign, and I ran my election without their support.

What is the position of Ali Odefa in all these crises?

So for me, I believe that I’m on the side of the law. I will give an example. Ali Odefa they are parading up and down is not a member of the party.  This is a judgement of  High Court. He was expelled by his ward, affirmed by his local government and of course the State. They went to court and got a  judgement. And this is part of the judgement. “An order of perpetual injunction restraining the first defendant, Honorable Dr. Ali Odefa from parading himself as a member of the People’s Democratic Party and or as the National Vice-Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party for the South East Zone of Nigeria and from performing the roles or exercising the powers of the position”.

It goes further to say, “This court ruling not only fortified the decisions of the party structures at his ward, Local government and State levels, but also permanently banned him from presiding at or even attending any PDP-related meetings. It is thus established that any meeting conveyed or attended by Honorable Ali Odefa remains invalid and infected by the virus of fundamental illegality”. This is the judgment of the High Court. So you will not go to the Southeast and say you are convening a meeting, who was there? I am the National Secretary of the party; I am from the Southeast. What meeting will you convene when I am not there? What justification do you have? Assuming today I am no longer the National Secretary, I am a member of the caucus, I am a member of the Board of Trustees, I am a member of NEC by my position. In politics, the Governor of any state is only the Governor of a State. My question is, what will Governor Makinde say that I did to him? Have I stressed him for any reason? Have I called him funny names? What’s my sin? What’s my problem with him? Have I done anything against him? What I’ve done against him? I consider him as my friend.Let me tell you, nobody can sign a document outside me. They came to find it themselves after doubting what I told them. I sent a message because I know that the Bukola Saraki committee is still meeting.

What is your relationship with the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike

The FCT Minister is my friend and my boss and I can never for any intimidation, deny him. Nobody can make me to deny my friend because after position, there’s still life. Even you as journalists, I don’t know where I’m going to meet you tomorrow. Your job may not be as a journalist. So I cannot under-rate any of you, because this journey is still very far and nobody knows how it will end. This is what I tell my NWC members. We came here as a united family. It would be nice for us to go as a united family so that we can still meet tomorrow and say we are brothers; we served in an organisation. Let nobody try to fragment the NWC. We’ve been here for three years plus. We just have four months to go. Let us do it and go in peace. We just have a few months to go. Why would anybody want to break his head? So for me, the position of the National Secretary is very clear. I’m the Secretary of the caucus. I’m the Secretary of NEC. Some people will say Senator Anyanwu is pro-Wike. What is pro-Wike? Everybody knows his role in this party. Everybody knows that when it mattered most, he was there for the party. He is working with the APC government, and they forget the way he was appointed, he wrote a letter to his party in the State. The party gave him a go-ahead. He wrote a letter to the then Governor, the governor of the State also gave him the go-ahead; he wrote to NWC, and he was appointed. I would not stop him from going to hold that position.

What is your relationship with the PDP Governors?

I respect our Governors because I know it’s not easy to be a Governor. But, that you’re a Governor does not mean that you cannot come out and tell your colleagues the truth.  They know the truth. Why are they shying away from it? They know the truth.

Is the PDP part of the coalition?

No. The PDP is not part of the coalition. The PDP cannot merge with any party. The PDP is the first party and the only party that retrieved power from the military. And at every nook and cranny of this country, you must always find a PDP. So we cannot; rather, other parties will subsume themselves into the PDP.

Anyanwu Postpones PDP NEC After Wike Pulled Out of Agreement with Govs /2025/05/26/anyanwu-postpones-pdp-nec-after-wike-pulled-out-of-agreement-with-govs/ /2025/05/26/anyanwu-postpones-pdp-nec-after-wike-pulled-out-of-agreement-with-govs/#comments Mon, 26 May 2025 03:13:22 +0000 /?p=1086643

*FCT minister discloses terms of current reconciliation

*Accuses Makinde of stoking new fire in party, allegedly instigating others against agreement

*Damagum defends ties with FCT minister, insists party not divided

*N’Central elects new party executives

Chuks Okocha, Olawale Ajimotokan in Abuja and Seriki Adinoyi in Jos

Hours after Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, pulled out of a peace agreement he had with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors and declared he was ready for a fight to the finish, National Secretary of PDP, Samuel Anyanwu, announced a postponement of the 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party slated for May 27.

The rearrangement came as acting National Chairman of PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum, denied allegations of incompetence and collusion with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but defended his relationship with Wike.

In a related development, the North-central zone of PDP held its congress in Jos, the Plateau State capital, and elected new party officials.

A PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting had been slated for today preparatory to the NEC parley, fixed for tomorrow.

But the schedule changed after Anyanwu announced the postponement of the NEC meeting.

A statement by Anyanwu said the postponement was to allow the Senator Bukola Saraki-led Way Forward Committee to conclude its assignment of resolving internal party conflicts.

Anyanwu emphasised that the committee’s work was crucial to ensuring a peaceful and effective NEC meeting.

The statement said a new date for the meeting will be announced in line with the PDP Constitution 2017, as amended, and the Electoral Act, 2022.

The statement warned that any NEC meeting notice or publication issued by deputy national secretary, posing as the acting national secretary, was unauthorised, illegal, and should be disregarded.

Anyanwu expressed regret over any inconvenience the change might cause but reassured stakeholders of his commitment to party unity and progress.

Nevertheless, an official of the party from the publicity directorate asked stakeholders to disregard the statement from Anyanwu.

Earlier in the day, Wike, who went over some of the terms of the peace agreement the party had sealed with him, accused Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of stoking a new crisis in the party by allegedly instigating other leaders, including Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, to move against the agreement.

Explaining his current position, Wike, in a statement yesterday, which he personally signed, said, “Since after the 2023 general election, the PDP has been wantonly swinging from one part of a slippery precipice to another, owing fundamentally to dishonesty and lack of trust amongst its key stakeholders.

“To stem this ugly trend, efforts have been made to arrest this pernicious virus of dishonesty and treachery and enthrone fidelity to agreements with a view to stabilising the party and moving it forward.

“To this end, a meeting of the G5 was held in Lagos. In that meeting, I made it clear to the Governor of Oyo State, HE. Seyi Makinde, that he was the architect of our problems, pointing out to him that non-adherence to agreements reached was the bane of the party, and that he was the chief culprit of this anomaly.
“At the end of the meeting, we resolved to bury the hatchet and make progress.

“As a follow-up to the aforementioned meeting, there was an expanded meeting in Abuja involving HE. Seyi Makinde, HE. Umaru Fintri, HE. Bala Mohammed, HE, Bukola Saraki, and I in Saraki’s guest house.

“In that meeting, I made it clear that I had no personal problems with HE. Bala Mohammed, except that he hides under the facade of Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum to serially renege on agreements. Tensions rose mightily in the meeting and it took all concerned to calm frayed nerves.”

Wike said at the end of the meeting, they came to some resolutions, including, “That Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the National Secretary of the PDP in tandem with the Supreme Court judgement. All legal matters relating to Rivers State must be withdrawn by the National Legal Adviser.

“The suit on the state of emergency be withdrawn forthwith. Nobody should deviate from the agreements so reached.”

According to the minister, “In the light of the foregoing, they pleaded with me to attend the stakeholders’ meeting at the Bauchi Government Lodge, regardless of my many engagements.

“I attended the meeting and clearly reiterated my earlier concerns, and to this end and in order to resolve all other lingering and pending issues, a committee was formed, headed by HE. Bukola Saraki.

“It is disheartening to note that even before the Bukola Saraki Reconciliation Committee began its work, the gentleman’s agreement we reached at Saraki’s Guest House was already being crudely violated.

“To my chagrin, Seyi Makinde had connived with Peter Mbah of Enugu State to orchestrate the summoning of the meeting of so-called South-East leaders to recommend that if Ude-Okoye was not adopted as Secretary, they would pull out of the PDP. I have since granted an interview to the effect that, that resolution of the South-East leaders cannot hold.

“Again, Seyi Makinde organised some people in the National Secretariat to insist that the Deputy National Secretary should act as National Secretary, in violation of the agreement earlier reached. To attempt to give credence to this farce, a letter was written by the Deputy National Secretary, calling for a meeting of the NEC of the party.”

Wike added, in the statement, “Furthermore, the letter confirming the candidacy of the governorship candidate of the party in the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State, duly signed by the National Secretary, Senator Anyanwu, and the acting National Chairman, was portrayed as rejected by the party through a rebuttal letter signed by the National Publicity Secretary, acting on the orders of Seyi Makinde and Peter Mbah.

“All these actions are in complete violation of the agreements reached and would not do the party any good whatsoever.

“On the 24th of May 2025, in Jos, for instance, a well publicised and properly attended zonal elective congress of the PDP was aborted because the letter inviting INEC to the congress was signed by the Deputy National Secretary of the party.

“INEC refused to attend because the proper signatory recognised by law, that is Senator Samuel Anyanwu, was not a signatory to the invitation notice. This is undeniably distasteful, provocative and annoying, to say the least.

“I have painstakingly put out all these facts so that PDP members and the general public would know the truth. I have been in this party since 1998 and have worked tirelessly for the survival of this party with all my strength and it is on record that none of these persons have done anything close to what I have done to sustain this party.”

Wike stated, “What is more painful is that I contributed substantially to most of these governors winning their elections, yet I have not made any personal demands on any of them and I would never do so.

“Most importantly, I had thought that we could keep the trust amongst us, but since it is now obvious that they would continue to play games to the detriment of the party, as is the case in the current debacle in the North-central zonal elections, I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached.
“I have decided to fight on until justice is attained.”

Damagum Defends Ties with Wike, Denies Allegations of Incompetence, Working for APC

Acting National Chairman of PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum, denied allegations of incompetence and collusion with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Damagum, who also defended his relationship with Wike, amid mounting criticisms within the party, insisted that PDP was not divided and would soon overcome its challenges.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, Damagun addressed the accusations directly, dismissing claims that he is a puppet of APC. He reaffirmed his loyalty to PDP.
“May God be judge between me and whoever slandered me, and may God judge us, if I am working for the APC,” he said, referring to allegations that he met with President Bola Tinubu in England.

Damagum emphasised his long-standing commitment to PDP, stating, “I have a history. Since I joined the PDP in 1999, I have never defected. Those who dislike me will have to find ways to either praise or criticise me to get what they want.”

Damagum also responded to criticisms regarding his relationship with Wike. He acknowledged their association but denied any wrongdoing.

He said, “For all those who accuse me of having links with the Minister of FCT, I know him or have had links with him, and many of them have had links with him. My only fault here is that I did not allow them to do what they wanted with him.”

The PDP chairman expressed disappointment over the defection of some party members to APC, describing it as a loss. But he denied any mistreatment of those who left.

Damagum stated, “We must be sad. Whenever you lose someone, you don’t feel happy, even if it’s just one person you’re grieving for.”

He said none of the defectors could claim they were wronged by the party.

Addressing internal divisions within PDP, Damagum admitted that disagreements were inevitable in any political party but maintained that PDP remained united.
He declared, “PDP is one. It is true that there are internal problems, because a party never lacks problems because its leaders are people, and people are in it, and everyone has their own interests.”

Damagum, who also defended his leadership style, stated that he had adhered to principles and refused to yield to individual whims.

He also pointed to the aftermath of the party’s election losses as a period of heightened complaints, but reiterated his commitment to leading PDP with integrity.

North Central PDP Elects New Executives

The North-central zone of PDP held its congress in Jos at the weekend, and elected new party officials.

The congress, which started on Saturday produced Mohammed Abdulrahman as National Vice Chairman (North-central) to lead the zone into future political contests.

The election was widely acknowledged as peaceful and transparent.

Most of the new executives emerged unopposed in the exercise conducted in full compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, with voting and counting duly observed in all positions.

Other newly elected officials included Orogu Francis (Zonal Secretary) and Ndagana Alhasan (Zonal Youth Leader).

Held at Langfield Leisure Park, Jos, the congress attracted key stakeholders of the party from across the North-central region, including former senate presidents, past and serving governors, national and state assembly members, former ministers, and other party bigwigs.

In his acceptance speech, Abdulrahman expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to reposition the party for greater electoral success in the North-central zone.

He described the zone as a stronghold of the party and called on members to rally behind the new leadership to return the party to winning ways.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, while congratulating the newly elected executives, charged them to immediately set to work and unite the party across the zone.

Mutfwang stated, “Today’s congress was peaceful and successful. It clearly shows that the PDP in the North-central is alive and vibrant. We have shown that we are peace-loving, united, and committed to the ideals of the party.

“To those who stepped down in the spirit of party unity, your sacrifices will not be forgotten. I urge the newly elected executive to hit the ground running, reconcile differences, and build a strong, united front ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Be assured of our continuous support in nurturing the party to meet the aspirations of Nigerians.”

2027: Obi Shrugs off Coalition, Says He Will Contest on Labour Party’s Platform /2025/05/25/2027-obi-shrugs-off-coalition-says-he-will-contest-on-labour-partys-platform/ /2025/05/25/2027-obi-shrugs-off-coalition-says-he-will-contest-on-labour-partys-platform/#comments Sun, 25 May 2025 04:16:00 +0000 /?p=1086388

*Blames APC-led government for crises in PDP, LP*Narrates how Yar’Adua, Maurice Iwu forced APGA to resolve internal crisis

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

Despite his relationship with the promoters of a coalition of opposition political parties who are seeking to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has told his supporters that he would contest the next presidential election on the party’s platform.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Obi; former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and others had on March 20 in Abuja announced the formation of a coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

However, with Atiku’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Obi’s LP mired in internal political crises, the prospects of unity in the opposition have remained uncertain.

Speaking to a group of young supporters in a seven-minute, 16-second video, which was circulated yesterday on the LP’s WhatsApp platform, Obi accused the APC-led government of being behind the crises in the two main opposition parties – PDP and the LP.

The former Anambra State governor narrated how the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Maurice Iwu, had forced the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to resolve its internal crisis.

When contacted by Ƶ, Obi’s spokesman, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, and the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, confirmed the authenticity of the video.
Obi explained to his audience that what appears to be an internal crisis in the two dominant opposition political parties has the government’s imprint written all over them.

In response to a question on which platform he intended to contest the 2027 election, Obi said: “I will continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”

While answering another question from a youth who was disturbed about what appears to be Obi’s aloofness towards the LP’s crisis, the former Anambra State Governor said: “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government. Quote me anywhere.

“We had a problem in our party (APGA) in the past. Yar’Adua was the president. I went to him then; he called the INEC Chairman (Prof. Maurice Iwu) and told him ‘I don’t want any problem in any party.’ We were forced to fix it.

“But today, in all the parties, there are problems. These are deliberate problems caused by the system. These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity.

“Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition,” he explained.

Obi charged Nigerians to take responsibility for ensuring that their votes count, adding that even if agents are paid by political parties to look after their interests, the ultimate decision about the people’s votes counting rests with voters.

He appealed to Nigerian youths and the electorate not to be discouraged because positive change would also be resisted by those who are beneficiaries of the old order.

Obi equally noted that left to him, there should be a retirement age for politicians seeking public office.

He explained further that by the time the 2027 election holds, he would be 65 years old, adding that he would not want to be contesting for elections in his 70s.

The Obidient Movement had last week dismissed speculation that Obi was set to run as a vice-presidential candidate to Atiku in a new coalition being formed ahead of the 2027 elections.

The statement signed by the Director of Strategic Communication and Media for the Obidient Movement, Nana Kazaure, firmly declared that the report lacked any basis in fact and did not reflect Obi’s current political position or objectives.

While confirming that discussions about possible coalition were ongoing, the group stressed that Obi’s priority remained to forge a united front to address Nigeria’s deep-seated challenges, including corruption, bad governance, hunger, poverty, and the growing population of out-of-school children.
“This is not about power for power’s sake,” the statement read.

“It’s about building a politics that stands with the people and serves them.”

The Obidient Movement also affirmed that Obi remains a member of the LP, adding that if that ever changes, the former Anambra State Governor would announce it himself.

• Atiku meets Aregbesola in Osun to woo aggrieved politicians

• Saraki upbeat about achieving reconciliation in PDP

• ADA coalition may launch on May 30

Chuks Okocha in Abuja and Gideon Arinze in Enugu

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President and Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party Reconciliation Committee, Dr. Bukola Saraki, in separate moves yesterday, took steps to consolidate the opposition to make their planned ousting of President Bola Tinubu possible.

While Atiku went to Osun State, where he reportedly met former governor Rauf Aregbesola to woo him into the coalition opposition party, believing that as former governor of the State, he would command some following that would help swell the opposition, other consultations were going on across the country

Also yesterday, Saraki went with his team to Enugu State, where they met Governor Peter Mbah and had a closed-door meeting with him. Although the discussions were not made public, the visit will not be unconnected with the threat by the South East to exit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should their choice of Udeh Okoye as Secretary of the party not be respected.

The moves by Atiku and Saraki are coming as the new coalition in the making under the umbrella of All Democratic Alliance (ADA) has tentatively slated May 30th for the official declaration of the National Opposition against Tinubu and his ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The calculation of Atiku in meeting Aregbesola is that since he was a close ally of Tinubu, but has fallen out with him, all efforts should be made to bring into the fold everyone displeased with the ways of the President who also are abreast of his strategies to gather enough momentum to unseat the ruling party. However, details of their discussion was not made public.

In a post earlier, Atiku wrote: “I was warmly received by stakeholders on arrival at the Akure Airport in Ondo State, ahead of the coronation of the 49th HRH Owa Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup today.”

A video shared by Atiku on his X handle showed him driving into Aregbesola’s home, where the former governor warmly received him. Both men were then seen walking into the residence together, accompanied by their supporters.

Those at the meeting were several notable Osun political figures, including former APC State chairman Lowo Adebiyi; Chairman of Omoluabi Progressives Alhaji Azeez Adesiji; former Secretary to the State Government Moshood Adeoti, and ex-House of Assembly Speaker Najeem Salaam.

However, for the PDP, other members of the Reconcillationa Committee that went with Saraki to meet Mbah who is the Leader of PDP in the region, were a former governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Seriake Dickson, and a former governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo.

Leaders of the PDP in the zone had in a communiqué issued after the South-East PDP Zonal Executive Council Meeting, announced the re-nomination of former PDP National Youth Leader, Udeh-Okoye, to serve out the remaining tenure of the National Secretary, threatening possible exodus should their decision not be respected.

“In the event that our position is not promptly implemented by the Party, the South East PDP, as a family, will be compelled to reconsider our relationship with the PDP going forward,” part of the communique from that meeting had read.

However, addressing journalists after the closed-door meeting, Saraki said that they were in Enugu State to consult with Mbah, adding that Enugu was the first State they were visiting because the committee appreciates the importance of the South East in the PDP family.

“As you all know, the South East has played a key role as the bedrock of the popularity and the strength of our party. In recognition of that, we are here to consult with him and first to commend him on the leadership role he has been playing in the party. More importantly also, to commend what he is doing in Enugu State, which is a reflection for Nigerians to see what happens when you have a PDP government,” he explained.

Saraki said that they discussed how to ensure that “we carry out the assignment given to us and go ahead to have our NEC and our convention. We will have one that is rancor-free and smooth, peaceful and lays the foundation for the PDP that we all are wishing for. With this, we can say here in Enugu we laid the foundation for a greater new PDP that is coming.”

Speaking further, he said “What we have also seen today is that there is nothing insurmountable in the challenge ahead and the spirit, the commitment of all of us, especially our leaders, is very very inspiring.”

Meanwhile, the new coalition is divided into three camps. The first camp is those who wants an entirely new political party formed. This group is headed by the former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi. The other is led by the Liyel Imoke committee that is charged with the chances of considering an existing political party to fuse into.

The other group seeking that the social democratic party be considered as an option. This group is led by the former governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.

According to the secretary of the Amaechi committee, Dr. Umar Ardo, ”coalition is seeking an entirely new party, The All Democratic Alliance, ADA with the aim of bringing something new, something that is not in any way tainted with the impunity of existing political party ”

It was learnt that this committee is trying to avoid the mistake associated with the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP,  that has plunged it into crisis over leadership” struggle between Rabiu Kwankwaso and the founding national chairman, Boniface Aniebonam

It was gathered that while El-Rufai was pushing for Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the choice party for the coalition, the utterances of members of the party was discouraging to the coalition members

The former governor, who spoke with newsmen in Kaduna expressed confidence with the potential of the SDP after undertaking detailed evaluation of the party and found it worthy to join.

El-Rufai said, “I believe very strongly that, the SDP provides the potential to recreate a major political party. But with the support of some of the opposition groups, we will not get all. But most importantly, the people of Nigeria need a credible alternative.

”I use the phrase credible alternative very, very carefully because PDP has run the country for 16 years. Nigerians know what it is, even though it’s a long time. Many may have forgotten.”

However, buttressing why a new party must be formed, Ardo said, ”In reviewing our discussion last night, and especially the report of the Gov. Amaechi Committee submitted to the National Opposition Coalition Group chaired by Senate President David Mark, it is clear that as prominent opposition leaders in Nigeria that are exploring forming a coalition to unseat the incumbent president in the forthcoming 2027 elections.

”The resolve to register a new political party is what most Nigerians are waiting in the wings to see from the opposition leadership as testament to pragmatic strategy, a bold political move and the right democratic renewal. Moreover, a move for registration of a new party through the collaboration and cooperation of all key opposition stakeholders can only result into a broad national democratic movement capable of being a catalyst for the desired change.

”As a matter of fact, Nigeria’s political history is replete with examples of failed coalitions using existing platforms. In the First Republic, the coalition between the Action Group, the National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC), UMBC and NEPU disintegrated under political pressure and ideological differences. Similarly, during the Second Republic, alliances between the Nigerian People’s Party (NPP), Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Great Nigeria People’s Party (GNPP) and People’s Redemption Party (PRP) proved ineffective due to lack of trust and common purpose. Even more recently in 2011, as a result of poor strategy, attempts by Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to build coalitions in the Fourth Republic to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fizzled out, unable to overcome individual ambitions.

”These historical lessons emphasise the futility of forming coalitions without a new and unified structure. In Aristotle’s ‘Politics’, he argues that “a city is not made by a multitude, but by a unity of purpose.” The same principle applies to political parties. Individuals to form a coalition to join an existing political party would lack the unified purpose needed to succeed, as it will simply be an event instead of being a process in challenge of Nigeria’s highly competitive political arena. Only through the creation of a new political party can opposition leaders create the process to achieve success. And there is still time to do so.

”Forming a new political party is the most logical and effective course of action for the opposition. It has huge strategic advantages. The successful formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013 – an amalgamation of various opposition parties – was a process that demonstrates the power of starting anew. The APC’s victory in the 2015 elections was not merely due to discontent with the PDP but also to the perception of a fresh, united and purpose-driven movement.

”Sun Tzu, in ‘The Art of War’, emphasizes that “opportunities multiply as they are seized.” By creating a new party, the opposition would not only consolidate their strengths but also weaken their former parties. Their departure would sow chaos within the PDP, APC and Labour Parties, giving the new party a strategic advantage. Furthermore, this move would inspire public confidence by signaling the opposition’s seriousness about change. Voters are more likely to rally behind a movement that projects strength and unity rather than fragmented factions operating under different banners. The opposition, through its party registration process, will be paving the way for such unity by positioning itself as a platform for all progressive stakeholders.

”The opposition’s fear that the government will block the registration of a new party is both speculative and defeatist. While it is true that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is often subject to political pressure, the mere attempt to register a new party would expose any potential bias. Socrates’ philosophical precept that “an unexamined life is not worth living” applies here. Just as individuals must test their principles, democratic institutions must be scrutinized for their integrity.  If the opposition is denied registration after fulfilling all legal requirements, it would further expose the government’s manipulation and discredit both INEC and the ruling party. By itself, the politics of registering a new political party can be a catalyst for the defeat of incumbency.

”Such a scenario would also provide the opposition with a moral high ground, leveraging public outrage to build a strong support base while pursuing legal redress through a writ of mandamus to compel registration. If the judiciary fails to act impartially as well, it would further tarnish the credibility of this key democratic institution, raising the stakes even higher and creating more political capital for the opposition.

”The opposition’s proactive effort to register a political party would not just be an exercise in resilience but also a potential test case for Nigeria’s democratic integrity. If blocked, the opposition stands tall to expose institutional bias and rally public support for democratic reforms.

“But by refusing to attempt registration of a new party, the opposition would only reveal a lack of political courage. Niccolò Machiavelli’s dictum that “Fortune favors the bold” underscores the importance of decisive action in politics. Timidity and hesitation have never been the hallmarks of successful political movements. In contrast, boldness often inspires loyalty and respect. Voters are drawn to leaders who demonstrate conviction and a willingness to challenge the status quo. The current opposition strategy of joining an already established political party, however, projects uncertainty and fear, which are both unlikely to galvanize public support for the opposition and emboldening the government to push through more electoral devilry.”

”By creating a new political party, opposition leaders would not only assert their independence but also offer Nigerians a true alternative. Such a move would demonstrate their commitment to democratic principles and their willingness to fight for the people’s right to choose their leaders freely. The opposition must embody this commitment and be ready to stand with all like-minded forces.”

In a document seen by Ƶ, signed by the former Minister of Transportation, who is the former governor of Rivers State, Amaechi ”Recommending All Democratic Alliance”

According to the document, ”Justification for the Founding of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) includes ”The All Democratic Alliance (ADA) is envisioned not merely as a political party but as a national renaissance movement, deeply rooted in democratic idealism, ‘justice, and visionary leadership.

“ADA offers a credible, people-centered alternative to existing political formations, aiming to unify all or most of the nation’s opposition groups and individuals and re-establish trust and common purpose amongst themselves.”

Obi: I’m Not Tinubu’s Enemy /2025/05/20/obi-im-not-tinubus-enemy/ /2025/05/20/obi-im-not-tinubus-enemy/#comments Tue, 20 May 2025 02:25:19 +0000 /?p=1084777

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) in 2023, Peter Obi, has said he is not an enemy of President Bola Tinubu.

Obi said he was only interested in joining a coalition against hunger, poverty, and the terrible state of healthcare and education in Nigeria.

Obi made the allusion amid growing rumours of a possible coalition among opposition leaders to unseat Tinubu in 2027.

The statement came as the Obidient Movement, an umbrella group for Obi’s loyalists, described as imaginary and fictitious speculations that Obi would be a running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election.

Obi, who visited Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kubwa, in Abuja, on Monday, emphasised that he was not desperate for any position.

“The only coalition I am interested in is the one against hunger, poverty, and the bad state of healthcare and education in the country. I am not desperate for any position,” the former presidential candidate said.

Obi came third in the 2023 presidential election, with many believing that a coalition between him, Atiku, and other opposition leaders could defeat Tinubu in 2027.

The former governor of Anambra State dismissed a deal to run as a vice presidential candidate in 2027. He insisted that those saying he had an agreement to deputise anyone were playing politics of selfish ambitions detrimental to the growth of the country.

Obi, who made a financial donation to a school project in the diocese, said it was because the government failed to deliver free and qualitative basic education that the church had to bear the huge burden.

He was seen with former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, exchanging pleasantries with Tinubu at the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Sunday.

Obi said he was not an enemy of Tinubu, stressing that he accorded necessary courtesy to him in Rome as protocol demands.

He emphasised that the only enemy he had was corruption and corrupt leaders, who had made life difficult for the Nigerian people.

Aligning with Obi’s position, the Obidient Movement said they were aware of coalition talks with the former governor, but “Obidient Movement would like to state emphatically that there is no truth or basis to the reports whatsoever” of him deputising anyone.

In a statement by its Director, Strategic Communication and Media, Nana Kazaure, the Obidient Movement said, “Even as we know that the publication is imaginary to the author, we are tempted not to ignore it because of the possible far-reaching misconception it will have in the public space.

“While frank and cordial engagements with our partners and stakeholders towards a coalition continue amicably, the Obidient Movement would like to state emphatically that there was no truth or basis to the reports whatsoever.

“Without any risk of contradiction, we would like to reiterate that Mr Obi has maintained that his objective and his involvement in a coalition, is to provide a united front against and to tackle issues of bad governance, corruption, hunger, poverty, poor healthcare, out of school children and the myriad other problems daily afflicting the people of Nigeria.

“We want politics that is progressive, standing firmly with the people and serving the great people of Nigeria and not politics just for the sake of grabbing power.”

Kazaure added, “At this point in time, Mr Peter Obi remains in the Labour Party, and if ever this changes, he will make that announcement himself.

“The Obidient Movement would like to advise against sensationalism and speculation on these matters. At this difficult time, all Nigerians and the media, inclusive, should emphasise and contribute to building a better country.”

HURIWA Queries Missing Electricity Funds, Demands Answers from Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas) /2025/05/20/huriwa-queries-missing-electricity-funds-demands-answers-from-minister-of-state-for-petroleum-gas/ /2025/05/20/huriwa-queries-missing-electricity-funds-demands-answers-from-minister-of-state-for-petroleum-gas/#respond Tue, 20 May 2025 02:22:01 +0000 /?p=1084766

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the refusal of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, to respond to repeated Freedom of Information (FOI) requests regarding the status of a substantial sum of money earmarked for boosting electricity supply towards the end of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

In a press statement issued on Monday, HURIWA accused the current administration of silence and complicity over the unexplained disappearance of this vital fund, which was preserved on the express recommendation of former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

According to the national coordinator of the group, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the recommendation was made in the twilight of the Jonathan administration to prevent some cabinet members from allegedly sharing the funds meant for a critical national development project.

The rights group revealed that former Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, in a now-public letter to the then President, date May 15, 2015, advised that the proceeds—believed to be in excess of $1 billion (NNPC/NLNG dividend funds)—should not be tampered with, but instead preserved to revamp the power sector.

President Jonathan reportedly accepted this recommendation and instructed that the funds be kept intact for electricity infrastructure development.

HURIWA expressed dismay that despite Diezani’s principled stand to preserve the funds for national interest—against pressure from fellow ministers—she was later maligned by the succeeding government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Onwubiko lamented that the former minister became the subject of what it described as “unrelenting media persecution,” based largely on unsubstantiated claims and politically motivated propaganda.

“It is shameful and disturbing that the same woman who stood firm to prevent the looting of a major national fund meant for electricity supply was turned into a scapegoat and publicly humiliated with all manner of false, unsubstantiated, and malicious claims.

“Nigerians were told that she practically collapsed the entire petroleum industry as if she left the country with the entire sector in her handbag,” HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, stated.

“Today, we are discovering through credible documentation that she actually made efforts to protect public interest and national infrastructure development.

“But the most disheartening part is that immediately the Buhari administration took over, that same fund she worked hard to preserve was allegedly shared without any transparency.”

To get clarity and transparency on the matter, HURIWA said it wrote not once but twice to the current Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, demanding an explanation on what became of the said fund, but the minister has blatantly refused to respond.

“Why is Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo acting as if he is above the law? The FOI Act is not an advisory document—it is a law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It mandates public office holders to disclose information that is in the public interest. His failure to respond to our FOI requests is a direct violation of that law, and we are alarmed by his disregard for transparency and accountability,” HURIWA emphasized.

HURIWA Demands Transparency in Federal Government’s Conditional Cash Transfer Claims /2025/05/19/huriwa-demands-transparency-in-federal-governments-conditional-cash-transfer-claims/ /2025/05/19/huriwa-demands-transparency-in-federal-governments-conditional-cash-transfer-claims/#respond Mon, 19 May 2025 02:18:45 +0000 /?p=1084414

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has raised concerns over the federal government’s recent claim that 2.3 million households have benefited from the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) program, demanding full disclosure of the distribution process and beneficiaries’ data.

During a press briefing at the headquarters of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Director General Abisoye Coker-Odusote announced the revalidation of 2.3 million individuals under the National Social Safety Nets project, noting that disbursements would soon begin.

She emphasized the necessity of accurate identity verification to ensure targeted support and prevent payments to deceased individuals.

However, HURIWA in a statement by the national coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, expressed deep skepticism, pointing to the absence of publicly accessible data and a lack of transparency in the program’s implementation.

The association disclosed that it had conducted an independent opinion poll across Nigeria involving over 50,000 respondents—none of whom had received or knew anyone who had benefited from the cash transfers.

“The government’s assertion of disbursing funds to 2.3 million households is unconvincing without verifiable evidence,” HURIWA stated. “We demand the immediate publication of the distribution framework and a comprehensive list of beneficiaries in national newspapers to enable public scrutiny.”

The association also criticized the government’s management of the CCT initiative, describing the cash transfers as “audio cash” that allegedly end up enriching political affiliates rather than reaching vulnerable citizens.

HURIWA urged the government to end these opaque practices and instead prioritize transparency and accountability in handling public welfare funds.

Referencing recent reports from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), HURIWA noted that poverty levels in Nigeria have continued to worsen.

According to the World Bank’s Nigeria Poverty and Equity Brief (October 2024), approximately 47% of Nigerians are projected to live in poverty in 2024, with 45 million people falling into poverty since 2018/19.

Similarly, the IMF’s 2024 Article IV Consultation report highlighted a rise in poverty and growing food insecurity.

“It is paradoxical that the government claims to be fighting poverty through cash disbursements, while credible international organizations report an escalating poverty crisis,” HURIWA remarked.

“This contradiction raises valid questions about the effectiveness and integrity of the CCT program.”

The group called on the federal government to provide a detailed breakdown of the CCT initiative, including selection criteria, the disbursement process, and safeguards to prevent diversion of funds. It further recommended independent audits to verify that resources are reaching the intended beneficiaries.

“Transparency and accountability must be the cornerstone of all public welfare programs,” HURIWA stressed. “The government must demonstrate its commitment to these principles by making all relevant information about the CCT program publicly available.”

HURIWA reiterated its demand for the publication of the list of CCT beneficiaries and the distribution model in widely circulated national dailies.

The association also urged civil society groups, the media, and the public to hold the government accountable to ensure social welfare programs truly benefit Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens.

SERAP Tells NNPC to Account for Alleged Missing N500 Billion /2025/05/19/serap-tells-nnpc-to-account-for-alleged-missing-n500-billion/ /2025/05/19/serap-tells-nnpc-to-account-for-alleged-missing-n500-billion/#respond Mon, 19 May 2025 02:10:13 +0000 /?p=1084368

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Bayo Ojulari, to account for the whereabouts of an alleged missing N500 billion.

It said the NNPC failed to remit the amount to the Federation Account between October 2024 and December 2024, as revealed by the World Bank.

SERAP urged Ojulari to identify those suspected to be involved, surcharge them for the full amount involved, and hand them over to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation and prosecution.

SERAP also urged Ojulari to invite the EFCC and ICPC to investigate the spending and whereabouts of the alleged N500 billion, and to ensure the full recovery and remittance of the money to the Federation Account without further delay.

The World Bank had last week disclosed that out of the N1.1 trillion revenue from crude sales and other income in 2024, the NNPC only remitted N600 billion, leaving a deficit of N500bn unaccounted for. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also recently called for the subsidy removal savings to be transferred to the  national budget.

In a Freedom of Information request dated May 17, 2025 and signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “There is a legitimate public interest in explaining the whereabouts of the alleged missing N500 billion oil money and grave violations of the Nigerian Constitution 1999.

“The country’s oil wealth ought to be used solely for the benefit of the Nigerian people, and for the sake of the present and future generations.”

According to SERAP, Nigerians have the right to know why the NNPC failed to remit the subsidy removal savings to the Federation Account, and why the NNPC is deliberately denying states and local governments their allocations from the Account, contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

“Nigerians continue to bear the brunt of these missing public funds from the NNPC meant for the economic development of the country.

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel the NNPC to comply with our requests in the public interest.

“The missing oil revenue reflects a failure of NNPC accountability more generally and is directly linked to the institution’s continuing failure to uphold the principles of transparency and accountability.

“The Nigerian Constitution, Freedom of Information Act, and the country’s anti-corruption and human rights obligations rest on the principle that citizens should have access to information regarding the spending of their commonwealth,” it stated.

End to Rivers Crisis in Sight as Wike Insists Fubara Remains His Political Son /2025/05/18/end-to-rivers-crisis-in-sight-as-wike-insists-fubara-remains-his-political-son/ /2025/05/18/end-to-rivers-crisis-in-sight-as-wike-insists-fubara-remains-his-political-son/#respond Sun, 18 May 2025 04:37:37 +0000 /?p=1084211

*Says he’s only fighting those inciting suspended gov against him

*Debunks alleged 2027 presidential ambition, insists he won’t contest against Tinubu

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

An end to the political crisis in Rivers State seems to be in sight as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has dismissed the feud between him and the suspended governor of the state, Siminalayi Fubara, insisting that Fubara remains his political son.

Wike, who clarified that he was not fighting Fubara but those pushing the suspended governor against him, also debunked insinuations that he would pick the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to battle against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking yesterday in an interview with BBC News Pidgin Wike refuted claims of a feud between him and Fubara, describing the suspended governor as his political son, adding also that he cannot fight his son.

The FCT minister stated the battle was not against Fubara, but against those he claimed had been pushing the suspended governor against him.
Wike said: “That one is not a battle. He (Fubara) is my boy; he is my son; why will I fight with him?

“I’m only fighting against people who want to steal what they did not work for.

“When you don’t defeat them; they will think you….. Defeat them to the final stage.

“Now, they are ashamed because they are being defeated. They are the ones pushing Fubara.”

Wike and Fubara have been engaged in a political rift since 2023, fueling an unending political crisis in the state.

There were reports that Fubara, who was suspended by President Tinubu following the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, had visited Wike and tendered apologies to his former boss.

A member of the Rivers State Elders and Leaders Council and pioneer spokesman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, had described Fubara’s visit to Wike, as a sacrifice made in the interest of peace in Rivers State.

Speaking in reaction to the meeting, Sara-Igbe said the suspended governor had consistently shown a desire for peace, contrary to what he described as Wike’s combative stance.

“That discussion is not for public consumption, except the FCT Minister wants to make it public,” Sara-Igbe stated. “At the end of the day, we’ll hear the result.”
He lauded Governor Fubara’s move, emphasising that peace often requires personal sacrifices.

In another development, Wike has debunked insinuations that he would pick the presidential ticket of the PDP to battle against President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

There have been speculations that Wike was nursing the ambition to pick the presidential ticket of the PDP if the main opposition party zones its presidential ticket to southern Nigeria.

However, the former Rivers State governor said he would not contest against his boss.

Asked if he would contest if the main opposition party zones its ticket to the South, Wike simply said: “I will not contest.

“Why will I contest against someone I’m working for?” Wike queried.

When the interviewer further asked him if he believed that President Tinubu would win the 2027 election, Wike said there was nobody in the opposition to challenge the President.

“They said they will zone it to the South; let them zone first. When we get to the bridge, we will know how to cross it,” he added.

Chuks Okocha and Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja

Former governor of Delta State and vice presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, yesterday, maintained that for a stable Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu should do eight years of two four-year tenures.

Okowa also disclosed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar might be on his way out of PDP, stating that there is uncertainty about a so-called coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) being spearheaded by Atiku.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Okowa also took a swipe at former Senate President Bukola Saraki, saying the ex-Kwara State governor has no moral right to question his political decisions, having himself left PDP at some point in the past.

Okowa stated, “The politics today may not be about the north and south, because I believe that both from the north and the south, people are competing, and in all political parties, you’re likely going to have people from the north and the south.

“But beyond all this, for the stability of this nation, I also do believe that, yes, President Bola Tinubu was elected president in 2023, and for the stability of Nigeria, it is best for us to have him complete his eight-year tenure. Then the presidency can move back to the north. I believe that is the right thing.”

Okowa, along with the entire PDP machinery in Delta State recently defected to the ruling APC, citing, among other reasons, the need to align with the central government.

The ex-Delta State governor, who was running mate to Atiku in the last general election, said his vice presidential bid in 2023 failed because he moved against the prevailing political sentiments that power should return to the south.

He pointed out that before he left PDP alongside his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and others, there were several consultations with stakeholders.

But Okowa hinted that there was no need to discuss the matter with former Governor James Ibori, one of the most prominent political figures in the state, because at the time they were not in the same political party.

Okowa also stated that his defection to the ruling party had nothing to do with his matter with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He denied ever speaking with ex-governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, who was rumoured to have assured him that his “sins” would be forgiven once he left PDP for APC.

Okowa said PDP did not appear to be preparing for the 2027 general election. He believed that PDP’s recent outright rejection of collaboration with any other party was a recipe for failure.

On the criticism by Saraki, Okowa said, “First, we did defect to the APC. I did not watch Senator Bukola (Saraki) speak, but I heard about what he said. Ordinarily, I believe that we’re a political family in Delta State, and once we take decisions together, I have to go with my political family, because without that family, I have no politics to play.

“Two, I did not expect that somebody like Senator Bukola Saraki should be able to speak concerning me, because he knows that he had also moved to the APC before and eventually returned, so he has had movement to and fro. I don’t think he has the moral right to even speak about my defection at all. But I don’t want to join issues with him.”

According to him, PDP is no longer a proper political vehicle for Delta State, and it does not also appear that the party is ready to compete in the 2027 elections, especially with the many pending court cases.

Okowa said, “If I had the confidence on my own, and if the governor had the confidence that the PDP as it stands today is prepared to compete favourably and be very competitive at the 2027 elections, we would not have needed to move. But the signs are not there, because if you’re going to compete, it is necessary to reach out to people. We are not spending our time reaching out to people.

“There’s a lot of internal wrangling within the party. And as I said, I do not want to join issues with any of their leadership, because they are doing the best they can within their own thoughts. But those thoughts do not seem to go well with us, because we believe that for us to be truly competitive, we must stretch out our hands to embrace a lot of people.”

Although he admitted that Atiku had invited him last year to discuss the issue of forming a coalition, Okowa stated that he offered his advice to the former vice president, which he was not willing to discuss it publicly.

He stated, “I don’t think it’s exactly true that I was side-lined in the coalition talks, because I know that Waziri Adamawa, Atiku Abubakar, did invite me sometime last year, and I sat with him, and he talked about this coalition. And I did offer my advice at that point in time.

“And as they progressed, we met once again, and I actually did offer my own advice. The advice I gave to him was personal, and I do not think that it’s something that I have to talk about in public. But the real truth is that it’s not a question of being side-lined, but it’s a question of our people.

“He did invite me, and I discussed the matter with the governor. I discussed the matter with some of the leadership of our party, and they were not quite comfortable with a coalition that was being built. The primaries of the parties will start from next year.

“So we’re just one year away from competitive elections, and it does not appear that a vehicle has been confirmed for that coalition, nor does it appear to us as a state and as a political family that the coalition was going to be able to build strength within the short period of time available.

“And to that extent, it became worrying for both the governor and the leadership of our political family in Delta State. And we felt that it was difficult to move into that coalition.”

Okowa also disclosed that he had communicated to Atiku the fact that he was no longer comfortable in PDP, and affirmed that the former vice president’s body language was that he might be leaving PDP, too.

He explained, “Actually, I did communicate with him (Atiku) that we’re going to have stakeholders’ meetings, and I did communicate that we’re going to have the stakeholders meetings this week, that is, in the last week.

“And that it was going to be a leadership meeting, and the outcome of that meeting was going to determine our next path, because we are no longer comfortable with the PDP. And I also know that he was already heading out of the PDP from the communications that he has passed on to me, and that we, Nigerians, also know already.”

He further clarified that his defection was unconnected with the EFCC case. He stated that he was only invited by the anticorruption body, and he honoured the invitation.

According to him, “In the first instance, there are no sins to be forgiven, because no sins were committed. That is number one. Two, I was not arrested by the EFCC. A communication was sent to me, and that communication arrived at my place. I was overseas at that time, and when I returned, I reported to the EFCC to answer their queries.

“I am not afraid of being investigated because I worked for Delta State, and the people.

The large majority of the people understand that I did work for them, and because of the work that I did, I have nothing to fear.”

PDP to challenge Defection of Okowa, Gov

The National Working Committee (NWC) of PDP directed the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamarudeen Ajibade, SAN, to file a court action for the purpose of reclaiming the office of the governor of Delta State from APC.

The NWC also referred the secretaryship struggle between Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye to the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting expected to hold May 27, for final adjudication.

Addressing newsmen after its over five hours meeting, acting National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Umar Damagum, said the NWC resolved that the national legal adviser should file a process in court to recover the office of governor and those of other elected officials who defected last week to APC

Damagum stated, “The 1999 Constitution is clear, you don’t defect when there is no crisis in the party. The national legal adviser will challenge the defection in the court immediately. They cannot take away the fortunes of this party.

“We cannot just be left in the hands of our adversaries; we will take legal action to retrieve those mandates as far as the Electoral Act says whenever you leave you must leave the chair that you have occupied.

‘’No, the party did nothing wrong rather than their wish, according to them, to join the party, which, to me, has taken place. We’ve taken it with all sorts of regret and the pains that have gone down with us.

“I want to also use this opportunity to tell Nigerians that election is not done by the NWC. The election will be between Nigerians and them.

‘’And I believe this should not wear us down. Rather, it should make us roll up our sleeves so that we come to the point that we wouldn’t need to reconcile against each other.’’

Damagum further said, “They can coerce, like I said earlier, cajole and intimidate our members into joining there. But they can only do that because they feel they have what it takes.

“Nigerians, when the time comes, they will receive the result from Nigerians. It has happened before, and it will repeat itself.

‘’The parameters that will make Nigerians revolt against them are all in place. This government has been so insensitive to the yearnings and feelings of people.

‘’They have nothing so far. They have not shown any remorse. We are not conquered people. We are Nigerians, tax-paying Nigerians, law-abiding citizens. And we have rights. And when the time comes, Nigerians will show them that they have rights.”

Damagum stressed, “2027 is between Nigerians and Tinubu and the FEC. So, I want to urge our supporters to remain calm. We’ve just instructed the zonal caretaker committee to oversee the party in Delta after dissolving all the structures that have already been there, since the majority of them have shifted. And in no time, we’ll constitute a caretaker committee.

“We’ve also approved the zonal congresses that have so far taken place in the three zones, South-west, North-east, and South-east, and also approved a caretaker committee of North-central zone, pending when they will have their election soonest. With this, I want to urge our teaming supporters. I mentioned, I want to ask our teaming supporters to support the party.”

Emmanuel Ogidi was appointed to lead the South-south zone as the vice chairman, and directed to go to Delta State to recover all PDP property.

On the leadership struggle over the party’s national secretary, Damagum said the NWC had resolved to send the matter to the NEC meeting to resolve.

Anyanwu, who attended the meeting on the invitation of the NWC to state his position, said NEC would hold on May 27.
