The Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC) has successfully concluded its 2025 Annual Range Classification at the 192 Battalion Nigerian Army Shooting Range, Owode, where it retooled the marksmanship and weapon handling of its personnel.

The event, which drew participation from officers and soldiers of the Centre, ended with a closing ceremony presided over by the Commandant, NAFRC, Air Vice Marshal Bashir Mamman.

In his closing address, the Commandant lauded the professionalism, discipline, and team spirit displayed throughout the exercise. He described the event as more than a test of marksmanship, saying it was a reaffirmation of the bond and operational readiness that defines the military profession.

He said: “The 2025 Range Classification was not just about hitting targets, but about strengthening the spirit that make us a formidable fighting force. To every personnel and support team, who treated safety as sacred and teamwork as non-negotiable I salute you.”

Air Vice Marshal Mamman emphasised the importance of continuous operational readiness, urging all personnel to carry the discipline and camaraderie of the range into every mission and deployment.

He further noted that the Range Classification aligns with the vision of the Chief of Defence Staff for the Armed Forces of Nigeria, which is to nurture a professional force that is people-centric, collaborative, and capable of meeting its constitutional responsibility in a joint environment, while also ensuring that personnel reach the peak of operational readiness in light of Nigeria’s dynamic security challenges.

The exercise featured weapon classifications, including rifle and pistol, with emphasis on live firing, safety protocols, and performance evaluations. Range coaches from the 192 Battalion were applauded for their professionalism in managing the event. Over 320 personnel from the Centre participated in the one-day Range Classification exercise, including the Commandant and the Deputy Commandant. Some of the participants noted the exercise was rewarding and essential for honing weapon handling and marksmanship skills.

Speaking during the declaration by all participants at the range, the Director of Coordination, Commodore I. P. Udoudoh, noted that the exercise was a testament to the Commandant’s resolve to champion a Centre that is operationally ready. He said: “The exercise tested our mental alertness, weapon handling skills, and marksmanship proficiency, all of which are critical for our ongoing security operations across the country.”

Similarly, the Director of Training, Brigadier General I. O. Olatunji, added that the Centre intends to make the Range Classification bi-annual, allowing more personnel to build confidence in weapon handling, crucial for real-life security engagements.

With the successful conclusion of the NAFRC 2025 Range Classification, the leadership of the Centre reaffirmed its readiness to confront emerging threats and contribute effectively to national security. The event ended with a renewed sense of pride, discipline, and commitment to duty.

In a significant step towards preparing Nigerian military officers for life beyond service, the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC) has inaugurated Course 14/2025 of its Middle and Senior-Level Officers’ Entrepreneurship and Management Programme.

The initiative, held in partnership with EMPRETEC Nigeria Foundation, marks the second of four courses scheduled for the year and aims to instill vital entrepreneurial and managerial skills among officers still in service.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony on Monday, the Commandant of NAFRC, Air Vice Marshal Bashir Mamman, underscored the life-changing potential of the programme.

While clarifying that the training is not a pre-retirement initiative, he emphasised its importance in preparing officers for the realities of post-service life.

“This Course will equip you with the skills, mindset, and resilience needed to navigate the dynamic world of business and leadership,” said AVM Mamman. “It aligns with our mandate to provide quality training that adequately prepares personnel for reintegration into civilian life.”

AVM Mamman revealed that over 47,000 personnel—drawn from the Senior Non-Commissioned and Non-Commissioned Officers’ cadre—have undergone training at NAFRC to date.

Many of these ex-servicemen and women now run successful small and medium-scale enterprises across the country.

He added that more than 200 senior officers have benefitted from the entrepreneurship course since its inception, with expectations that the number will rise significantly in 2025 due to its quarterly implementation.

The training covers a wide range of subject areas, including entrepreneurship, agriculture, business law, human resource management, and marketing. AVM Mamman stressed the importance of commitment and adaptability in succeeding as an entrepreneur.

“Success in entrepreneurship is not just about a great idea, but about strategic planning, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to hard work,” he said.

Delivering the keynote address, Mrs Onari Duke, Country Director of EMPRETEC Nigeria Foundation, praised the Defence Headquarters and NAFRC leadership for their dedication to capacity building.

She highlighted the programme’s relevance in the current economic climate, where shifting focus from traditional employment to entrepreneurship is increasingly necessary.

“NAFRC’s commitment to capacity building is critical in today’s entrepreneurial landscape,” Mrs Duke stated. “This course will empower senior and mid-level officers with the skills required to succeed as entrepreneurs and managers in their post-service journeys.”

She further elaborated on the programme’s curriculum, which includes a blend of practical sessions, workshops, and study visits to successful enterprises such as Spectra Industries, Calaway Farms, Commint Buka, and Songhai Farm in Port Novo.

According to her, the training represents more than just skill acquisition; it is a rare opportunity for officers to reflect, recalibrate, and chart a new path of personal growth and societal impact.

The course modules for senior officers include 21st Century Leadership Challenge, Strategic Thinking for Profitability, Financial Modelling and Budget Forecasting, Project Management, Conflict Resolution, and Corporate Governance.

Meanwhile, mid-level officers are being trained in Emotional Mastery, Inventory Management, Health and Wellness, Ƶ Expansion, and Product Specification.

The Commandant formally declared the course open and charged participants to seize the opportunity to plan strategically and begin laying the foundation for their entrepreneurial future while still in active service.

The ceremony concluded with tributes to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for his visionary support, and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his steadfast leadership and commitment to the welfare of military personnel.

Essentially, this initiative reflects NAFRC’s unwavering vision of empowering service members for seamless reintegration into civilian life through entrepreneurship, innovation, and enterprise development.

Operation Awatse Maritime Component Intercepts 1,306 Bags of Smuggled Rice, Hands-over to Customs  /2025/04/17/operation-awatse-maritime-component-intercepts-1306-bags-of-smuggled-rice-hands-over-to-customs/ /2025/04/17/operation-awatse-maritime-component-intercepts-1306-bags-of-smuggled-rice-hands-over-to-customs/#respond Thu, 17 Apr 2025 02:04:28 +0000 /?p=1074912

The Maritime Component of Operation AWATSE, under the leadership of the Commander Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT and Maritime Component Commander of South-West Operation AWATSE, Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel, recently intercepted 1,306 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice at the Majidun Community in Ikorodu West Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Presently valued at over a million naira, the smuggled goods were yesterday handed over to the Superintendent of Customs Ajali Orji of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) under the Harmonised Standard Procedure on

Arrest, Detention and Prosecution.

Speaking, Commodore Nimmyel disclosed that the seizure was made on Saturday, 12th April 2025, during routine security and anti-smuggling patrols conducted by the Operation AWATSE team.

According to him, some vehicles suspected to be involved in smuggling attempted to evade a checkpoint manned by security operatives in the area.

“Operatives of Operation AWATSE, deployed in the Majidun area of Nkodu, accosted some would-be smugglers in vehicles after they almost ran over some of our checkpoints,” the Commander stated. “Our team eventually gave chase, and some other peak response teams were called upon to intercept the vehicle.”

The swift reaction by the Quick Response Team (QRT) of Operation AWATSE, in line with the Joint Task Force’s Standard Operating Procedures, led to the interception of the vehicle. Upon conducting a stop-and-search operation, officers discovered that it was laden with bags of foreign parboiled rice.

“And on discovery of the interception, some bags of foreign parboiled rice were found inside the vehicle,” Commodore Nimmyel confirmed. “At the time the stop-and-search operation was conducted and concluded, we took custody of approximately 1,306 bags of foreign parboiled rice, which you see behind me today.”

The seizure is yet another demonstration of the Maritime Component’s ongoing commitment to supporting statutory agencies in counter-smuggling efforts within its Area of Operations. Notably, the operation was executed with commendable professionalism, with no casualties recorded.

In keeping with inter-agency collaboration and the Harmonised Standard Procedures on Arrest, Detention and Prosecution, the confiscated items were officially handed over to the Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command, Apapa, on Wednesday, 16th April 2025, for further necessary action.

“In accordance with our mandate to support the lead agency in issues of smuggling, which is the Nigerian Customs Service, we are here today to hand over these bags to the customs operatives,” the Commander noted.

Commodore Nimmyel also issued a stern warning to smugglers and their collaborators operating within Lagos State and the Area of Responsibility (AOR) of Operation AWATSE.

“Let it be known to smugglers in Lagos State and the AOR of Operation AWATSE that all smuggling activities will not be tolerated,” he said.

“We are here to ensure a smooth working environment for everyone, for legitimate businesses to thrive, and to quash all forms of smuggling. We are not going to relent in our efforts. We are going to keep searching and going after smugglers, both on the waterways and on land.”

The interception marks yet another milestone in the coordinated effort to secure Nigeria’s borders and clamp down on economic saboteurs whose actions threaten national development.

Driving Financial Inclusion: How HabariPay’s Hackathon is Shaping Nigeria’s Fintech Future /2025/03/20/driving-financial-inclusion-how-habaripays-hackathon-is-shaping-nigerias-fintech-future/ /2025/03/20/driving-financial-inclusion-how-habaripays-hackathon-is-shaping-nigerias-fintech-future/#respond Thu, 20 Mar 2025 00:29:47 +0000 /?p=1067002

Despite Nigeria’s growing fintech sector, cash transactions still dominate, leaving many without access to digital financial services. To bridge this gap, HabariPay Limited, the fintech arm of GTCO, launched the Take on Squad Hackathon, a platform designed to nurture young innovators and develop practical, homegrown payment solutions. In its second edition, the platform recently brought together students from across Nigeria, challenging them to create scalable technologies that can drive financial inclusion. Chiemelie Ezeobi writes that more than just a competition, the hackathon served as a launchpad for young tech talent, providing mentorship, training, and career opportunities to shape the future of Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem

The Nigerian fintech ecosystem is evolving rapidly, and at the heart of this transformation is the push for homegrown solutions that address the country’s unique financial challenges. Recognising the need to groom local tech talent and drive financial inclusion, HabariPay Limited, the fintech subsidiary of Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), recently hosted the second edition of its flagship innovation event, Take on Squad Hackathon 2.0.

Held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the hackathon brought together twenty teams from universities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These young innovators had the opportunity to showcase their skills, collaborate on digital payment solutions, and develop financial technologies tailored to the realities of Nigeria’s economy. With the theme “Finclusion Revolution: Unlocking Access, Empowering Communities,” the competition aimed to highlight how technology can bridge the financial divide, particularly for underserved populations.

Encouraging Homegrown Payment Solutions

Eduophon Japhet, Managing Director of HabariPay Limited, emphasised that the goal of the event extends far beyond awarding prizes. She explained that the hackathon serves as an incubator for young tech talent, equipping students with the technical and entrepreneurial skills they need to drive innovation within Nigeria’s financial technology sector.

She highlighted the urgent need for homegrown payment solutions, explaining that approximately eighty percent of transactions in Nigeria are still cash-based, noting that many existing digital payment systems, including point-of-sale terminals and card transactions, depend on costly, imported technologies.

The high cost of these systems, she said makes them inaccessible to many small and micro-businesses, exacerbating the financial exclusion of large segments of the population, which was why the hackathon encourages young developers to explore alternative, indigenous transaction methods that are both cost-effective and scalable.

Beyond the Hackathon: Nurturing Long-Term Growth

Reflecting on the impact of the first edition of the hackathon, Japhet revealed that while last year’s winning projects had yet to reach the market, HabariPay had absorbed about 10 participants into its Academy Programme.

The initiative provides mentorship, hands-on training, and internship opportunities, ensuring that young innovators can refine their ideas and gain real-world experience. The academy also covers educational fees, helping students balance their studies with their passion for fintech development.

“Our Academy is an extension of the hackathon,” Japhet explained. “We provide mentorship, training, and internships, and even cover educational fees to support these students. By integrating them into our team, we ensure they have the resources and guidance needed to refine their ideas and contribute meaningfully to the fintech ecosystem.”

Spotlighting Transformative Solutions

The hackathon showcased a range of groundbreaking ideas aimed at addressing Nigeria’s financial challenges. Among the standout projects was Houseify, as a platform that soimplifies the house-hunting process by eliminating agent fees and directly connecting tenants to landlords.

Others include Team Delishgo, an app service that uses drones to deliver food and drinks from restaurants to customers. Team Talk and Pay was an audio fintech app that enables the visually impaired to tap into the financial sector using voice commands.

Another one was Stockly, an all-in-one business management platform that empowers SMEs with seamless inventory tracking. This is just as Split Ease, developed by Team Sirius was showcased as a digital solution to enhance the security of group savings under the Ajo payment system.

With increased participation this year, HabariPay is poised to uncover even more innovative solutions that can drive digital and financial inclusion. By fostering young talent, the company is not only shaping the future of Nigeria’s fintech industry but also redefining how financial transactions are conducted across the continent.

Recognising Excellence: The Winning Teams

After intense competition, Team Savvy emerged as the overall winner, receiving a cash prize of five million naira. Their solution stood out for its practical application in financial inclusion, demonstrating a scalable and innovative approach to solving Nigeria’s payment challenges.

Team Farmceries secured second place, earning three million naira, while Team TBD came in third with a prize of two million naira.

Beyond the financial rewards, the hackathon provided participants with access to expert mentorship, real-world fintech challenges, and the opportunity to gain industry exposure.

Many of the participants will also have the chance to join HabariPay’s Squad Academy, where they will receive further training, networking opportunities, and access to potential job placements within GTCO’s fintech ecosystem.

As financial technology continues to transform economies across the continent, events like Take on Squad Hackathon 2.0 play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide and fostering technological self-sufficiency. By supporting young developers and encouraging the creation of indigenous fintech solutions, HabariPay is actively shaping the future of Nigeria’s digital economy.

In a significant step towards preparing military officers for life beyond active service, the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC), Oshodi, on Friday, March 14, 2025, held a graduation ceremony for participants of the Senior and Mid-Level Officers’ Entrepreneurship and Management Course 13/2025.

The event marked the completion of an intensive four-to-five-week training programme designed to equip officers with entrepreneurial and managerial skills essential for establishing and running successful businesses.

With focus on wealth creation, strategic planning, and innovation, the course is a key initiative aimed at ensuring officers’ seamless transition into civilian economic ventures.

A New Chapter for Graduating Officers

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commandant of NAFRC, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) BR Mamman, described the graduation as a significant milestone in the careers of the participants. He commended their dedication and emphasized that the training had prepared them to become engines of growth, job creators, and innovators in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

“You have been empowered to shape the future, turn visions into realities, and contribute to national development,” he told the graduates. AVM Mamman highlighted that the course had been enhanced with practical learning experiences, including a visit to Songhai Farms in Porto Novo, Benin Republic, where participants gained firsthand knowledge of modern agricultural and business management practices.

As part of its commitment to supporting officers in their entrepreneurial journey, AVM Mamman announced that NAFRC would collaborate with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to facilitate business registration for participants. This initiative is expected to provide a seamless transition for the officers into entrepreneurship, ensuring they have the necessary legal and structural foundation for their businesses.

Encouraging Leadership and Innovation

One of the key figures present at the ceremony was Mrs. Onari Duke, the Country Representative of EMPRETEC Nigeria Foundation, a United Nations-affiliated entrepreneurship development program. Congratulating the graduates, she urged them to apply their newly acquired knowledge to not only improve their personal and professional lives but also to drive innovation in their respective fields.

“This training has equipped you with the tools to become not only successful entrepreneurs but also effective leaders who can drive positive change,” she stated. She encouraged the officers to remain adaptable and forward-thinking, emphasizing the need for continuous learning and mentorship in their business ventures.

The Director of Training, Brigadier General AO Olatunji, also underscored the importance of the course, noting that it had been carefully designed to address the evolving needs of officers transitioning into entrepreneurship and management. He commended the participants for their discipline and commitment, expressing confidence in their ability to overcome challenges and excel in their new pursuits.

A Call to Action

The ceremony concluded with AVM Mamman formally conferring awards on the graduating officers. He charged them to lead with purpose, innovate with courage, and make a lasting impact in their communities and the nation at large.

As they step into new phases of their careers, the officers are now equipped with the tools, knowledge, and networks necessary to thrive in the world of business and management.

With this initiative, NAFRC continues to play a crucial role in empowering military personnel for post-service success, reinforcing its mission to support national development through skill acquisition and entrepreneurship.

A high-level delegation from the Australian Defence Force (ADF), led by Brigadier General Bassett, Director General of Platforms, has lauded the Nigerian Navy’s cutting-edge maritime capabilities following a visit to NNS KADA, a world-class Landing Ship Tank (LST).

During a courtesy call on the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral MG Oamen, at the Command’s headquarters in Apapa, Lagos, Brigadier General Bassett highlighted the purpose of the visit, stating:

“The Australian Defence Force is currently undertaking a fleet renewal programme, and in the course of our research, we identified NNS KADA as a top-tier option in terms of capability and modern naval requirements.

“It is recognised as one of the best-designed Landing Ship Tanks in the world, and we are keen to understand its operational efficiency firsthand.”

Rear Admiral Oamen welcomed the delegation and underscored the significance of NNS KADA to Nigeria’s maritime security strategy.

He said: “The Nigerian Navy, as the largest naval force in the Gulf of Guinea, requires a platform like NNS KADA to effectively project power and secure vital sea lanes that support international shipping.

“ We are pleased that the Australian Defence Force has taken an interest in this vessel, as it reflects the quality of our naval assets and their potential contributions to global maritime security.”

The FOC West also conveyed the greetings of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral EI Ogalla, to the Australian delegation, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to fostering international naval cooperation.

Navy Brings Hope to Majidun Community with Free Medical Outreach /2025/03/19/navy-brings-hope-to-majidun-community-with-free-medical-outreach/ /2025/03/19/navy-brings-hope-to-majidun-community-with-free-medical-outreach/#respond Wed, 19 Mar 2025 01:19:43 +0000 /?p=1066567

For many residents of Majidun in Ikorodu West Local Government Area, Lagos State, accessing quality healthcare has been a persistent challenge. However, on Tuesday, 18 March 2025, relief came in the form of a free medical outreach organised by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT under the leadership of Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel.

The outreach, known as Medical Rhapsody, was more than just a routine exercise—it was a lifeline for pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, and the elderly, many of whom lack access to essential medical services.

From free blood sugar tests to vital medications and expert consultations, the programme provided much-needed care to those who might otherwise go without.

Speaking at the event, Commodore Nimmyel reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to community welfare, emphasising that the outreach was part of a broader strategy to strengthen civil-military relations.

“This initiative reflects the Nigerian Navy’s dedication to not just securing our waters but also supporting the health and well-being of the people we serve,” Commodore Nimmyel stated. “We recognise the challenges many communities face in accessing healthcare, and through programmes like this, we aim to bridge that gap.”

He further assured the residents that the Navy remains dedicated to their safety and development, urging them to see the military not just as a force of defence but as a partner in nation-building.

Rear Admiral OA Bankole, the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations (CDCMR), echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of outreach programmes in strengthening trust between the military and local communities.

“This outreach is not just about medical care; it is about trust, collaboration, and showing our communities that the military is here to serve, not just protect,” he said.

He encouraged residents to utilise the free services provided and to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities that could threaten peace and stability in the region.

The Executive Chairman of Ikorodu West, Honourable Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju, commended the Nigerian Navy for prioritising the welfare of the people, describing the initiative as a timely intervention.

“Many here cannot afford medical care, and this outreach has brought relief to countless families. We deeply appreciate the efforts of NNS BEECROFT and the Nigerian Navy for prioritising the health of our people,” he remarked.

For the beneficiaries, the outreach was more than just medical assistance—it was a lifeline. A mother of three, Mrs Yetunde Olagunju, shared her relief at receiving free treatment for her youngest child.

“I have been worried about my baby’s health, but I had no money for hospital bills. Today, I got help without paying a kobo,” she said with gratitude.

Another resident, Mr Adekunle Ayodeji, commended the initiative, saying, “This is the kind of collaboration we need between the government and security agencies. It shows that the military truly cares about the people.”

Beyond the immediate impact of Medical Rhapsody, the Nigerian Navy has continued to expand its humanitarian efforts, recognising that access to healthcare remains a challenge for many Nigerians. Initiatives like this are not isolated events but part of a broader vision to integrate military resources into national development.

Officials hinted at the possibility of making such outreaches more frequent, potentially expanding them to other riverine and hard-to-reach communities where healthcare services are scarce. Commodore Nimmyel reiterated the Navy’s commitment to sustaining these initiatives and encouraged partnerships with local health professionals to enhance service delivery.

As the event concluded, residents departed with not just medicines and medical advice but a renewed sense of hope. The Nigerian Navy, through Medical Rhapsody, had left an imprint far beyond healthcare—it had strengthened the bond between the military and the people.

With programmes like this, the Navy continues to redefine its role, proving that its mission extends beyond defending Nigeria’s territorial waters to actively contributing to the well-being of its citizens.

As Majidun’s residents reflected on the day’s events, one thing was clear: the presence of NNS BEECROFT was not just about security—it was about service, compassion, and community upliftment

Nigerian Army Strengthens Counter-security Strategy with Joint Training in Lagos and Ogun /2025/03/13/nigerian-army-strengthens-counter-security-strategy-with-joint-training-in-lagos-and-ogun/ /2025/03/13/nigerian-army-strengthens-counter-security-strategy-with-joint-training-in-lagos-and-ogun/#comments Thu, 13 Mar 2025 01:00:06 +0000 /?p=1064918

Chiemelie Ezeobi

As Nigeria confronts an ever-evolving security landscape, the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has taken decisive steps to enhance its operational readiness and inter-agency collaboration through an intensive training programme.

The annual Operations Planning Cadre, held at the Army Officers’ Mess in Marina, Lagos, focused on strengthening security coordination across Lagos and Ogun states.

With the theme “Enhancing Operational Readiness Through Effective Planning, Collaboration and Capacity Development,” the training brought together personnel from the military, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and other security agencies. This joint initiative aimed to refine strategic planning, improve operational synergy, and foster better cooperation among security forces.

Strengthening Security Coordination

At the event, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, underscored the importance of the training as a critical platform for refining operational strategies and reinforcing collaboration among security agencies. He noted that the Operations Planning Cadre serves as a forum for officers to exchange ideas, develop innovative approaches to security challenges, and enhance inter-agency cooperation.

“The inclusion of multiple security agencies in this training ensures a more realistic approach to modern security challenges, reflecting the complexities of inter-agency cooperation in real-world operations,” Major General Mijinyawa stated. He further emphasised that the training was designed to equip officers with essential planning and leadership skills, enabling them to execute security mandates more effectively.

The collaborative effort aligns with the Nigerian Army’s broader objective of fostering a seamless security framework across its Area of Responsibility (AOR). Given the diverse security threats facing Nigeria—including insurgency, banditry, and transnational crimes—the integration of security agencies in strategic planning is essential for achieving lasting security stability.

Building Capacity for Operational Success

Also speaking at the event, Major General Baba Umaru Yahya, Commander of the Nigerian Army Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, highlighted the indispensable role of training, discipline, and commitment in achieving operational success.

“The discussion around military operations remains central to national security, especially as Nigeria faces an array of evolving threats,” he said. “The involvement of various security agencies has become even more critical in countering non-state actors who pose risks to public safety.”

Major General Yahya stressed that the increasing security demands on the Nigerian Armed Forces require continuous professional development and enhanced support for civil authorities. He reiterated the Army’s commitment to proactive security measures, improved inter-agency cooperation, and mission-specific training.

“The constantly shifting nature of security threats underscores the need for continuous capacity development. This operations planning cadre is expected to provide officers with the necessary expertise to tackle these challenges effectively,” he concluded.

A Holistic Approach to National Security

The Nigerian Army’s emphasis on inter-agency collaboration reflects a strategic shift towards a more integrated security framework. By bringing together key stakeholders in the defence and security sectors, the training aims to enhance operational effectiveness and ensure a coordinated response to security threats.

As Nigeria continues to confront complex security challenges, initiatives such as the Operations Planning Cadre serve as vital mechanisms for strengthening national security. The Nigerian Army’s commitment to training and capacity development remains a crucial component in ensuring stability, safeguarding communities, and addressing emerging threats in an increasingly dynamic security environment.

China’s Deepening Economic, Humanitarian Ties with Nigeria /2025/03/06/chinas-deepening-economic-humanitarian-ties-with-nigeria/ /2025/03/06/chinas-deepening-economic-humanitarian-ties-with-nigeria/#respond Thu, 06 Mar 2025 01:47:40 +0000 /?p=1062710

At a high-profile media dialogue in Lagos, the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China, Yan Yuqing, painted a vivid picture of China’s unwavering commitment to deepening its ties with Nigeria. With China’s investment in Africa soaring beyond $40 billion, she underscored the nation’s role as a pillar of economic transformation, technological advancement, and humanitarian support. Chiemelie Ezeobi reports

At a time when investments from major economies and multinational corporations into Africa have remained relatively static, China’s economic engagement with the continent has experienced a meteoric rise. Reports indicate that China’s investment in Africa has now reached approximately $40 billion, reflecting a sustained commitment to economic cooperation.

Among the countries benefitting from this deepening relationship, Nigeria stands out as a key partner, receiving substantial investments across multiple sectors.

In a recent media engagement held in Lagos, the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China, Yan Yuqing, reaffirmed China’s dedication to systematic economic development initiatives that continue to buoy the African economy.

These initiatives extend beyond infrastructure to encompass scientific research, cultural exchange, and educational development—areas that the Chinese government views as critical to sustainable growth. She highlighted that human capital development remains at the heart of China’s engagement strategy in Africa, with Nigeria playing a prominent role.

Speaking to a group of media professionals, Yan Yuqing emphasised that more Nigerians are visiting China for business, education, and cultural exchanges. She revealed that in 2024 alone, over 19,000 Nigerians have been issued Chinese visas, a number that underscores the growing importance of the Nigeria-China relationship. According to her, this trend surpasses the rate at which Nigerians visit other developed and developing economies.

China’s Role in Technology and Research in Nigeria

China’s rapid advancements in technology and artificial intelligence (AI) present significant opportunities for Nigeria. The Consul-General highlighted that China is at the forefront of AI innovation, with Deep-Seek, a cutting-edge AI development, drawing global attention. “China’s development and research rank second in the world. China is today believed to have achieved more than thrice the US investment in AI. It also has the largest AI investment in the world,” she stated.

Nigeria stands to gain considerably from China’s advancements in AI, research, and technology. The potential for knowledge transfer, investments in research institutions, and AI-driven industries could catalyse technological growth in Nigeria. With China’s expertise in digital transformation, Nigeria has an opportunity to leverage these innovations for economic and industrial development.

Chinese Visas: Affordable and Accessible

One key aspect of China’s outreach to Nigerians is its visa policy. Yan Yuqing stated that obtaining a Chinese visa is among the easiest and most affordable processes for Nigerians. “Last year, we issued more than 19,000 visas from our Lagos State Consulate,” she said.

She further explained that the cost of a single-entry Chinese visa is approximately N10,500, making it significantly cheaper compared to the cost of obtaining a Nigerian visa for Chinese nationals, which is about N420,000. This visa policy is intended to encourage more Nigerians to visit China for business and education.

Yan Yuqing also clarified the requirements for Nigerian business travellers. “A businessman who wants to travel and has been to China before within four years requires just a commercial invitation from his partners in China. For one who hasn’t been to China, he can ask his partner from China to apply from the government authorities on his behalf.”

This policy underscores China’s interest in fostering greater economic and cultural ties between the two nations.

China’s Economic Policies and Their Impact on Africa

China’s economic growth continues to influence its engagements with Africa. Yan Yuqing stated that despite global economic challenges, China’s economy remained resilient in 2024, achieving a 5 per cent GDP growth rate.

She noted that “last September, the government introduced policies that significantly improved the economy, and they aim to implement more proactive fiscal and monetary policies to strengthen businesses for continued transformation of China’s economic growth.”

She further assured that “more of such policies would be implemented in 2025 to improve the methods of economic governance. Efforts would be made to actively promote transformation of China’s economic roles and greatly impact the quality and sustainability of economic growth.”

Over the past 15 years, China has remained one of Africa’s largest trading partners and one of the main sources of foreign investment. “China’s direct investment in Africa in 2023 exceeded $40 billion, and Africa is China’s second-largest overseas contracting and engineering market, with Chinese enterprises contributing business volume of $100 billion over the past decade,” she added.

Free Eye Surgeries: China’s Humanitarian Efforts in Nigeria

Beyond economic investments, China has also played a significant humanitarian role in Nigeria. One of the most notable initiatives is the provision of free eye surgeries for Nigerians suffering from cataracts and other vision impairments. The Chinese government, through its medical outreach programmes, has sponsored surgeries for thousands of Nigerians, especially those in rural areas who lack access to quality healthcare.

These eye surgeries, conducted by Chinese medical teams in collaboration with Nigerian hospitals, have restored sight to many individuals who would otherwise have been unable to afford treatment. The initiative is part of China’s broader commitment to strengthening Nigeria-China relations through social interventions.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

China’s engagement with Nigeria extends beyond trade and humanitarian aid. The two nations have continued to collaborate in areas such as education, infrastructure development, and cultural exchanges.

Chinese companies have invested heavily in Nigeria’s construction sector, with major projects such as railway lines, highways, and power plants benefiting from Chinese expertise and financing.

Additionally, China has been instrumental in promoting educational exchanges, with Nigerian students receiving scholarships to study in China under various government-funded programmes. These initiatives contribute to strengthening the bonds between both countries, creating opportunities for cultural understanding and knowledge sharing.

As China continues to expand its influence in Africa, Nigeria remains a crucial partner in this evolving relationship. With investments spanning economic, technological, and humanitarian sectors, the partnership between the two nations is set to grow even stronger in the coming years.

Disaster Looms at Ikeja Air Force Base as Prolonged Blackout Threatens National Security, Bomb Explosion /2025/03/05/disaster-looms-at-ikeja-air-force-base-as-prolonged-blackout-threatens-national-security-bomb-explosion/ /2025/03/05/disaster-looms-at-ikeja-air-force-base-as-prolonged-blackout-threatens-national-security-bomb-explosion/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2025 02:00:26 +0000 /?p=1062348

•Command battles Meningitis breakout, referred/cancelled surgeries, decomposing bodies in morgue

Chiemelie Ezeobi

A major catastrophe looms at Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Ikeja, the Logistics Command of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), as a 12-day power outage has left high-calibre military armaments, including bombs and rockets, dangerously exposed to extreme heat.

If the blackout continues, experts fear a disaster akin to the 2002 Ikeja Cantonment (now T.A Lagbaja Cantonment) bomb blast, which devastated the area and claimed hundreds of lives.

Military sources speaking under anonymity described the situation as “a disaster waiting to happen”, warning that without electricity to power the cooling systems, the risk of accidental explosions is increasing by the hour.

Additionally, the highly flammable Jet AI fuel stored at the base is exposed to soaring temperatures, further heightening the threat.

Beyond security concerns, the prolonged blackout has crippled essential services. The reference hospital at the base has been forced to refer patients to other facilities due to the lack of power, disrupting planned surgeries.

The mortuary, struggling with inadequate refrigeration, is now battling severe decomposition issues.

The situation is also taking a toll on the health and welfare of personnel stationed at the base. With a severe heatwave gripping Lagos, some soldiers have reportedly contracted meningitis, while others have resorted to sleeping outdoors to escape unbearable conditions in their quarters.

“It’s unbearable. We are serving our country, yet we are being made to suffer,” a soldier lamented.

At the heart of the crisis is the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (Ikeja Electric), which has been accused of failing to honour its agreement with NAF.

Ƶ gathered that despite NAF paying its agreed monthly fee of N60 million for 10 to 12 hours of daily electricity, power supply had remained erratic.

In November 2024, the base was billed N43.4 million but it was said to have paid N60 million, with no explanation or reimbursement for the excess, a situation which repeated in December last year.

The NAF leadership expressed outrage over what it called a deliberate act of sabotage.

It was gathered that Ikeja Electric had been written with the warning that continued denial of power supply could lead to dire consequences, both in terms of national security and military-civil relations.

Some soldiers, who spoke to Ƶ on condition of anonymity, said they were on edge given the way the electricity company had treated personnel who were sacrificing everything for the good of the country.

Declaring it an act of sabotage, one of the soldiers told Ƶ that there had been an outbreak of meningitis, coupled with the fact that the actions of Ikeja Electric had undermined military operations and personnel welfare.

Speaking, also, on strict conditions of anonymity, another personnel told Ƶ that being without electricity for an extended period had raised fears of a potential disaster because even backup generators were struggling to maintain essential systems, with some storage facilities approaching dangerous temperature levels.

Stressing that the continued blackout could lead to accidental detonations or compromise national security, soldier added that the base was running out of options to keep its critical infrastructure operational.

Even with the suggestion of going off grid and powering the command on solar energy, the source said they were exploring all options since solar was a long term solution while the command needed immediate power attention.

Attempts to get the reaction of Ikeja Electric proved abortive as calls put across to the corporate communications persons did not connect, neither did they respond to text messages sent as at press time.

*Calls for discipline and inter-agency cooperation as against conflicts with other security forces

Chiemelie Ezeobi

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has pledged to improve the welfare of Nigerian soldiers by increasing allowances, expanding access to affordable housing, and enhancing service conditions.

Speaking during his official visit to the 81 Division Area of Responsibility in Lagos, where he was received by

the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, the COAS announced a 100 per cent increase in field allowances, raising daily payments from N1,500 to N3,000.

“The current daily allowance is no longer sufficient. We discussed this with the government, and they have responded positively. From next month, your daily field allowance will be N3,000. However, as much as the government is doing for us, we must reciprocate with dedication and discipline,” he said.

The Army Chief also revealed that housing projects for soldiers are expanding nationwide, with new developments in Ibadan, Jos, Port Harcourt, Owerri, and Akwa Ibom, following the completion of the first set of units in Abuja last December.

“We are ensuring the spread of these houses so you can subscribe. Nowhere in Nigeria can you buy a two- or three-bedroom house for as low as N80 million. This is a huge investment by the Army to ensure you have a comfortable service life,” he said.

To provide additional financial relief, General Oluyede said they have instituted a low-interest loan scheme for personnel, offering credit at just three per cent interest, significantly lower than commercial bank rates.

He also assured soldiers of improvements in uniform distribution, with a monthly production target of 100,000 uniforms to address shortages across divisions.

Beyond welfare, General Oluyede emphasised the need for discipline and inter-agency cooperation, warning against conflicts with other security forces.

“One major concern is clashes with the police, DSS, and civil defence. This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Most of these issues arise when soldiers are not where they should be. If you remain within the barracks and report for duty as scheduled, such problems will not occur,” he warned.

Reaffirming his leadership’s commitment to soldiers’ well-being, he said, “My team and I will do everything possible to ensure your welfare and that of your families, so you can focus on your duties. But I need your commitment in return—to serve with dedication and professionalism.”

Also, the COAS visited some units and inaugurated some projects in the division, including the 9Brigade Cantonment in Ikeja, Lagos, where he was received by the Commander, Brigadier General Olawale Oyekola.

At the cantonment, the COAS inaugurated the remodelled accomodation of the Commander 9 Brigade, the newly built residence of the Commander 70 Supply and Transport Command, the renovated seven by Corporal Below Quarters and the three by Senior Non-Commissioned Officers.

The Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC) in Oshodi, Lagos, has officially inaugurated the participants of Course 01/2025, a pivotal six-month programme aimed at equipping retiring military personnel with the skills they need to successfully transition into civilian life.

The ceremony, which held last week, marked the beginning of an intensive training designed to ensure that the retiring officers are prepared to lead fulfilling and financially stable lives after their service to the nation.

Addressing the 540 participants drawn from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Air Force, the NAFRC Commandant, Air Vice Marshal BR Mamman, congratulated the officers on their selection for the highly esteemed programme.

He described the Centre as a “citadel of hope and courage,” emphasising the Centre’s role in providing a platform for personnel to gain valuable vocational and entrepreneurial skills.

“The objective of this programme is to prepare you not just for civilian life but for meaningful, self-sustaining ventures,” AVM Mamman said in his speech.

He highlighted the wide range of subjects included in the training, such as entrepreneurship, financial management, information and communications technology (ICT), health and safety practices, and retirement planning.

The aim is to ensure that participants leave the Centre not only with the knowledge to manage their finances but also with the confidence and ability to create successful businesses or pursue other post-service opportunities.

Feedback from previous participants serves as a testament to the programme’s success, with many graduates having gone on to become thriving entrepreneurs and even employers of labour.

AVM Mamman urged the participants to make the most of this invaluable opportunity. “Punctuality, discipline, and active engagement throughout this course are key to your success. Take full advantage of what is being offered,” he advised.

The Commandant assured participants that they would be guided by experienced instructors and that the course would be tailored to meet their individual needs. Representatives from the Military Pensions Board will also be available to address concerns about retirement benefits, further ensuring that the transition from military to civilian life is as smooth as possible.

However, the path to success in the programme is not without its expectations. AVM Mamman made it clear that discipline is a cornerstone of the Centre’s ethos. He warned participants about the importance of adhering to the Armed Forces Act, with attendance being crucial for certification.

A minimum attendance of 90 per cent is required to obtain the Certificate of Course Completion. Acts of misconduct, absenteeism, or inappropriate behaviour on social media will be met with sanctions.

Brigadier General IO Olatunji, the Director of Training, also addressed the participants, reinforcing the Centre’s mission to ensure a successful reintegration into civilian life. He underscored the importance of the Centre’s world-class facilities and reiterated the need for high levels of commitment, discipline, and respect from the participants.

“Of the 604 personnel nominated for Course 01/2025, 540 are present today, 27 have yet to report, and 37 have been returned to their units due to medical unfitness,” Brigadier General Olatunji disclosed.

The course comes at a crucial time for the Nigerian Armed Forces, as it continues to prepare retiring personnel to enter civilian society with dignity and skill. The NAFRC’s unwavering commitment to providing the necessary tools for successful reintegration ensures that those who have served their country with distinction are well-equipped to thrive in their post-service careers.

As Course 01/2025 gets underway, the participants now have a unique opportunity to embrace this transformative experience, one that will shape their futures for years to come.

The Gates Foundation has kicked off its 25th anniversary year with the announcement of its largest-ever budget of $8.74 billion for 2025.

This milestone aligns with the foundation’s goal to reach annual distributions of $9 billion by 2026, reaffirming its commitment to addressing global inequities and creating a healthier, more equitable world.

The Seattle-based Gates Foundation, is guided by the belief that every life has equal value, thus the foundation works globally to ensure that all people have the chance to lead healthy, productive lives by addressing health inequities, empowering communities, and expanding opportunities, especially for the most underserved populations.

Led by CEO Mark Suzman and its governing board, the foundation has remained dedicated to its vision of improving lives worldwide.

“Amid the greatest headwinds to health and development progress we’ve seen in a generation, this funding reflects our commitment to doing our part to reach people who will benefit most from innovations and programs that improve health and expand access to opportunity,” said CEO Mark Suzman.

Accordingly, the 2025 budget will fund initiatives focused on Delivering life-saving tools to reduce maternal and child deaths and combat infectious diseases; Researching and developing new global health innovations; and Empowering women and girls through economic power and agency.

“At this pivotal moment in the foundation’s history, I am confident Alex’s experience, creativity, and energy will build upon the momentum of the [communications] division while charting a bold course into the next phase of our organization,” said Suzman.

“In so doing, she will inspire pride in the foundation’s work across our teams and the thousands of partners who work tirelessly to create a more equitable world,” he added.

In February, June Yoshinari Davis, currently the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Officer, will assume the newly created role of Chief People Officer (CPO), succeeding Sonia Vora, who has served as Chief Human Resources Officer since 2022.

Nexit Launches Globally, Bringing Advanced Navigation to African Road Users /2025/01/18/nexit-launches-globally-bringing-advanced-navigation-to-african-road-users/ /2025/01/18/nexit-launches-globally-bringing-advanced-navigation-to-african-road-users/#respond Sat, 18 Jan 2025 00:21:00 +0000 /?p=1048955

After transforming road travel in the United States since 2019, Nexit, a groundbreaking navigational mapping solution, has officially launched globally on Android and iOS platforms on Friday.

The app, which introduces a host of innovative features, is now set to provide African road users with the same seamless travel experiences enjoyed by its American users.

Nexit has been described as the world’s first fully customisable navigation app, tailored to enhance road trips by integrating user preferences and detailed trip information.

Speaking about the global launch, Randy Carpenter, CEO of Nexit, said the app’s design reflects meticulous attention to mapping resources. “The brains behind the app went into the critical details of mapping resources to provide landmark technology blueprints that sit mobile maps at the core base of today’s travel needs,” he stated.

Dubbed the “ultimate highway-driving co-pilot,” Nexit is designed to predict users’ needs and show them what is available at every highway exit along their route.

Unlike traditional mapping tools, Nexit provides integrated search functionalities, enabling users to perform multiple inquiries simultaneously. This feature, combined with its ability to display upcoming exits, ensures drivers never have to double back or drive too far off course.

“The app is equivalent to the highway-driving co-pilot every road user always wanted, only this time, it is deployed right there on the user’s mobile device,” Carpenter added.

Nexit’s features go beyond standard turn-by-turn voice and visual directions, helping users create personalised road trips.

For example, users can search for specific points of interest, such as petrol stations, restaurants, or hotels, and receive results tailored to their preferences—all displayed in one seamless interface.

What truly sets Nexit apart from existing mapping giants like Google Maps and Apple Maps is its unique, user-focused features.

Among these is its Innovative City Mode, which enables users to conduct multi-layered searches across various categories. This functionality allows travellers to identify areas that meet multiple preferences, making it easier to explore cities or plan coordinated stops efficiently.

Another groundbreaking feature is TravelMatch, which empowers users to make coordinated stops during their journeys. This functionality is especially beneficial for families or groups travelling together, as it allows for better planning and reduces unnecessary detours.

Nexit also introduces Membership Benefits Integration, a first in the navigation technology sector. This feature incorporates membership and loyalty programmes, offering users access to perks from organisations such as AAA, AARP, Costco, and CVS. These integrations aim to help users maximise savings by providing exclusive discounts and benefits they may otherwise overlook.

“Most members of these organisations underutilise valuable features because they are not fully aware of all the benefits included in their membership associations,” Carpenter explained.

“By providing a platform that combines exclusive discounts with membership benefits, Nexit ensures users get the most out of their memberships.”

The launch of Nexit on the African continent represents a significant step forward for road users in the region. With a growing number of travellers seeking reliable navigation tools, Nexit offers a unique solution that is both global in scope and local in its application.

Dr Vincent Ebuh, Founder of Nexit, expressed his excitement about the app’s potential impact. “We’re thrilled to offer a global solution to local ideas that incorporates both our unique deals and existing member benefits in a way that’s easy to use and incredibly valuable,” he said.

Dr Ebuh also highlighted the app’s plans to expand its reach through partnerships with renowned brands. “We will look for new partnerships with renowned brands in the coming months as Nexit expands its benefits to travellers,” he added.

Nexit’s ability to anticipate users’ needs and provide customised solutions is a testament to its forward-thinking approach. By addressing common pain points associated with road travel—such as poorly planned stops, missed opportunities for savings, and a lack of integrated information—Nexit is setting new standards in navigation technology.

The app’s intuitive design and industry-leading search functions make it an ideal companion for highway travellers, ensuring that users have access to everything they need without ever veering too far off course.

Nexit’s global launch is poised to disrupt the navigation landscape, challenging established players like Google and Apple Maps. By focusing on user experience and delivering features tailored to specific travel needs, Nexit aims to establish itself as the go-to app for road users worldwide.

As the app gains traction in Africa and beyond, its developers are committed to enhancing its functionality and expanding its benefits. With plans to forge new partnerships and introduce additional features, Nexit is well-positioned to become a vital tool for travellers seeking efficiency, convenience, and customisation.

For African road users, the arrival of Nexit marks a new era in navigation—one where technology meets the demands of modern travel in an intuitive, user-friendly way. As Dr Ebuh aptly put it, “Nexit is a global solution to local ideas.

For Strides in Innovation, Construction, the Naval Dockyard Receives Rep’s Commendation /2024/11/20/for-strides-in-innovation-construction-the-naval-dockyard-receives-reps-commendation/ /2024/11/20/for-strides-in-innovation-construction-the-naval-dockyard-receives-reps-commendation/#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2024 01:59:14 +0000 /?p=1032682

The Naval Dockyard Limited (NDL)  has solidified its reputation as a hub of innovation driven by the local content while driving Nigeria’s maritime security and bolstering regional stability in the Gulf of Guinea. Chiemelie Ezeobi writes that during the recent oversight visit by the House of Representatives Committee on the Navy, the dockyard deservedly received commendation for its strides in vessel construction, maintenance, and refurbishment, which have significantly enhanced the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Navy and others

Undoubtedly, the Naval Dockyard Limited (NDL) of the Nigerian Navy has emerged as a symbol of innovation given the critical role it plays in enhancing the operational capabilities of Nigeria’s maritime security and the broader Gulf of Guinea. This they have done through local content by constructing, maintaining and even refurbishing vessels, thus enhancing the navy’s ability to combat piracy, smuggling, and other maritime threats.

Recently, the House of Representatives Committee on the Navy, led by its Chairman, Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, conducted an oversight visit to inspect the dockyard’s projects and operations. Their assessment highlighted the Dockyard’s transformation into a hub of local content and technical ingenuity.

The Naval Dockyard Has Been Doing Well

Hon Gagdi did not hold back his admiration for the Naval Dockyard’s progress over the years. Reflecting on his experience, he remarked, “The Naval Dockyard has been doing well. This is my sixth year as Chairman of Navy. So, if there is anybody that knows how the Naval Dockyard was, I should be in a better position. I can tell you the status of the dockyard six years ago: what they produced and what they didn’t produce.”

He noted that the dockyard’s workshops, once plagued by inefficiencies, are now functioning at full capacity. “Their electroplating workshop, electrical workshop, and mechanical workshop are all functional. They mix their chemicals now and will soon start gold plating. Today, 90 per cent of the departments are functioning at full capacity,” Gagdi said.

He went on to add that “From what we have seen here, we have agreed that the performance of the Dockyard is something that the National Assembly needs to commend. We have to ensure that the capacity of the Dockyard is improved to the extent that it becomes a technological institution that will be the pride of the Gulf of Guinea.”

In response, the Admiral Superintendent of the Naval Dockyard Limited, ASNDL,

Rear Admiral Abolaji Orederu, attributed this success to exemplary leadership and the strategic support of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ikechukwu Emmanuel Ogalla.

Modestly declining to take personal credit for the dockyard’s achievements, he said it would not have been possible without the the unwavering support and vision of Vice Admiral Ogalla.

“Everything we have accomplished here is thanks to the support we receive from the Chief of the Naval Staff,” Rear Admiral Orederu said. “His leadership and commitment to strengthening the Navy’s operational capabilities have made our work at the Dockyard possible,” he added.

Prime Example of Local Content in the Maritime Sector

The Naval Dockyard is a prime example of Nigeria’s push for local content in the maritime sector. It’s no gainsaying that the construction of the NNS ANDONI, Nigeria’s first locally built Seaward Defense Boat, in 2012 was a historic milestone that buttresses this as it demonstrated that Nigerian engineers could deliver complex maritime projects.

Beyond this, the dockyard has since expanded its shipbuilding capabilities, producing vessels like the NNS KARADUWA and NNS UNITY, further solidifying its ground and reducing reliance on foreign imports.

Beyond new construction, the dockyard also excels in refurbishing and upgrading vessels, extending their service lives and enhancing operational performance. One notable achievement is the recent refurbishment of a vessel (with five others still in the works) for the Republic of Benin, underscoring the dockyard’s role as a regional maintenance hub.

Enhancing Regional Security

Expectedly, the dockyard’s work has far-reaching implications for regional security. By maintaining a fleet of locally built and refurbished vessels, the Nigerian Navy is better equipped to patrol its waters, enforce maritime laws, and contribute to anti-piracy efforts.

This capability benefits neighbouring countries, especially those in the ECOWAS Zone E of the Yaounde Architecture, this fostering regional solidarity and jointly strengthening the fight against maritime crime.

Therefore, as the Naval Dockyard Limited continues to break new ground, it is imperative that continuous investment is given to the dockyard to sustain this momentum.

To safeguard the maritime domain of the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) Waters and sustain gains recorded so far, the Nigerian Navy in partnership with 25 other global and regional navies and coastguards, yesterday flagged-off Exercise Grand African NEMO.
The annual multinational maritime security exercise is aimed at enhancing safety and security across the GoG and demonstrates a united front to secure West Africa’s vital waters for peace and economic growth.
Flagged off from Nigerian Navy Ship KADA in Apapa, Lagos, the exercise, which would span till November 11, brought together navies and coastguards from 26 nations in a collaborative effort to combat maritime threats in one of the world’s most strategic waterways.
Under the auspices of the French Commander in Chief for the Atlantic, this year’s exercise will focus on strengthening coordination across five operational zones in the Gulf of Guinea while participating forces will conduct exercises in national and zonal phases, which will include live scenarios to enhance response capabilities.
For the exercise, the Nigerian Navy, deploying five ships, helicopters, and specialised units, will operate alongside ships from the United Kingdom and Spain, with the lead vessel being NNS KADA under the command of Captain Andrew Zidon.
At the flag off, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, said the import of the exercise cannot be overstated as it would tackle maritime challenges such as piracy, sea robbery, and crude oil theft, which threaten regional stability and economic prosperity.
epresented by the Admiral Superintendent, Naval Ordinance Depot, Rear Admiral Livingstone Izu, the CNS said:  “Ex Grand African Nemo is a critical initiative allowing African navies to develop collaborative strategies against transnational maritime threats.
“This exercise reaffirms our dedication to creating a secure maritime domain that supports a thriving blue economy. Exercise Grand African Nemo is a landmark opportunity for navies and coastguards of the Gulf of Guinea to address common challenges with an African-led approach.
“Our vision is to foster a safe and secure region that allows economic prosperity and development for all. This exercise highlights our unwavering commitment to ensuring a maritime space where peace and commerce can flourish.”
He added that the Nigerian Navy would remain “relentless and resolute” in its dedication to regional security and combating threats to Nigeria’s territorial waters.
Ogalla, while commending the French authorities and other organisers of the exercise said: “The support we receive from our international partners in this exercise is invaluable. It represents a collective dedication to maritime security, and I assure you that these efforts will not be in vain.”
Also speaking, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral MG Oamen, assured the public of the navy’s commitment to its mandate.

“We are dedicated to maintaining a maritime environment where legitimate businesses can flourish. This exercise will boost our collective skills in defending Nigeria’s maritime assets.”

The FOC said the exercise was  strategically designed to enhance operational coordination, strengthen collective maritime defences, and deepen international partnerships across five distinct operational zones in the Gulf of Guinea.

He said the Nigerian Navy has deployed five ships, two Special Boat Service detachments, helicopters, and five maritime operations centres to the exercise while training scenarios during the event will challenge participants to respond to real-time threats, including piracy and sea robbery, as well as fostering capabilities in the defence of maritime assets.

Oamen also expressed confidence that the extensive training and collaboration between regional and international navies would strengthen the Gulf of Guinea’s defences against maritime criminality.

“By combining our efforts with those of our partners, we are sending a strong message that the Gulf of Guinea is united against piracy, crude oil theft, and other criminal activities,” he added.

MADAA: Fueling the Future of Home-grown Innovation, Entrepreneurs in Africa  /2024/11/05/madaa-fueling-the-future-of-home-grown-innovation-entrepreneurs-in-africa/ /2024/11/05/madaa-fueling-the-future-of-home-grown-innovation-entrepreneurs-in-africa/#respond Tue, 05 Nov 2024 01:14:14 +0000 /?p=1028110

To empower entrepreneurs, social innovators and researchers with ideas to transform and scale their ideas and businesses, the Sahara Group Foundation recently launched an ambitious initiative tagged ‘Making A Difference Around Africa’, MADAA. Chiemelie Ezeobi writesthat withaccess to robust resources, including financial and

investment support worth 100 million dollars and mentorship from seasoned industry experts, selected beneficiaries are expected to thrive and drive economic progress in the continent

The Sahara Group Foundation, the social impact arm of the energy conglomerate Sahara Group, has launched an ambitious initiative titled “Making A Difference Around Africa” (MADAA).

This transformative program seeks to identify and support home-grown innovations and entrepreneurs poised to drive Africa’s economic progress. With an overarching goal of sustainable development, MADAA is a testament to Sahara Group Foundation’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems across the continent.

By combining financial support, mentorship, and a focus on sustainability, the initiative is poised to make a significant impact on the continent’s economic development as the program’s emphasis on local resources and integrated ecosystems ensures that its benefits are felt at all levels of society.

MADAA’s Vision of Transformative Extrapreneurship

In line with its overarching transformative Extrapreneurship model, the foundation flagged off MADAA to give wings to the aspirations of African entrepreneurs as the concept was designed to merge entrepreneurship with social impact.

Essentially, this model is targeted at going beyond profit generation by embedding social good into business practices. Thus, the initiative was officially launched in a high-profile event that drew participation from corporate leaders, budding entrepreneurs, and media representatives in Lagos.

Speaking at the unveiling, Chidilim Menakaya, Head of Programs at Sahara Group Foundation, articulated the vision behind MADAA. “MADAA is a strategic platform developed by Sahara Group Foundation to identify entrepreneurs and social innovators who are on the cusp of greatness,” she said, adding that the initiative is positioned to provide the necessary impetus for these individuals to scale their ideas and businesses to unprecedented heights.

The emphasis on sustainability and local resources marks a distinct approach in MADAA’s implementation. The initiative is not merely about financial support; it aims to build a self-sustaining ecosystem where innovation can thrive.

Entrepreneurs selected for the program will have the opportunity to refine their business models, receive mentorship, and gain access to investment capital that could transform their ventures

MADAA’s launch comes amid Sahara Group Foundation’s drive for inclusiveness and progressive partnerships that promote expansion, business advisory, and capacity

development in the Medium Small and Micro Enterprises (MSMEs) sector across the

continent.

“MADAA seeks to support African home-grown innovations and businesses

to succeed, scale and thrive sustainably, thereby establishing an integrated ecosystem of collaborators actively contributing toward transforming economic development in

Africa,” Menakaya added.

She further stated that MADAA’s initiative underscores Sahara Group

Foundation’s unwavering commitment to “building sustainable communities through Extrapreneurship,” and represents the first project amongst an array of curated social interventions designed to promote sustainable development in Africa “by growing and

scaling the base of entrepreneurs who have exceptional ideas that can transform the continent’s economic fortunes”.

Empowering the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs

One of the most compelling aspects of MADAA is its focus on empowering young African entrepreneurs given that the continent is home to a burgeoning population of youth, many of whom are brimming with innovative ideas but lack the resources and mentorship to bring those ideas to life.

This lacuna is what MADAA aims to bridge by offering robust resources tailored to the unique challenges faced by African startups.

Process

The initiative’s application process, which runs until the end of November 2024, is open to entrepreneurs across the continent. This inclusiveness ensures that no promising idea is left unexplored due to geographical or socio-economic barriers. The goal is to create a pipeline of talent and innovation that can be harnessed to drive economic growth in various sectors.

Selected candidates will benefit from a comprehensive program that includes financial investment, mentorship, and business advisory services. The financial support, worth $100 million, is a significant commitment aimed at nurturing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that have the potential to make a lasting impact.

This funding will help entrepreneurs navigate the often challenging early stages of business development, allowing them to focus on innovation and growth.

Strategic Focus on Sustainability and Home-grown Solutions

For MADAA, the emphasis on sustainability and the use of locally available resources is a key differentiator as the initiative seeks to promote businesses that can operate sustainably within their environments, leveraging local assets to create value.

The goal is to ensure the long-term viability of the businesses but also contribute to the broader goal of sustainable development in Africa.

According to Menakaya, “We are actively on the lookout for the extraordinary, the unusual, those whose business ideas can be nursed to fruition sustainably.” This focus on sustainability is in line with global trends emphasising the need for businesses to adopt environmentally friendly practices and contribute to the communities in which they operate.

By encouraging entrepreneurs to utilise local resources, MADAA also aims to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility. This localised approach ensures that the benefits of economic growth are felt at the grassroots level, contributing to the overall development of the communities involved.

Building an Integrated Ecosystem for Economic Growth

MADAA is more than just an initiative; it is a movement aimed at creating an integrated ecosystem of innovation and collaboration. The program’s design facilitates partnerships between entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts, creating a network that can support business growth and sustainability.

This ecosystem approach is crucial in addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by African entrepreneurs. By providing a platform for collaboration, MADAA helps to break down silos and encourages the sharing of knowledge and resources. This collaborative spirit is essential in building resilient businesses that can withstand the challenges of operating in dynamic markets.

The initiative also places a strong emphasis on capacity development. Through mentorship and training, MADAA aims to equip entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. This includes not only technical skills related to their specific industries but also broader business management skills such as financial planning, marketing, and leadership.

Expectations

As the application process for MADAA unfolds, anticipation is building around the potential impact of this initiative. The selection of candidates will begin in December, with the actual program set to commence in the first quarter of 2025. The program’s beneficiaries will have the opportunity to transform their ideas into thriving businesses, contributing to the economic development of their respective regions.

Essentially, the launch of MADAA comes at a critical time for Africa when the continent is undergoing rapid economic and social transformation. This is where the growing recognition of the role that entrepreneurship can play in driving this progress, should take centre stage.

Interestingly, initiatives like MADAA are essential in harnessing the potential of African entrepreneurs and ensuring that their innovations contribute to sustainable development. This is in line with the broader vision of Sahara Group Foundation to create a ripple effect that goes beyond the immediate beneficiaries of MADAA by building a strong base of successful entrepreneurs.

While the journey for MADAA is just beginning, its potential to transform the entrepreneurial landscape in Africa is immense because by giving wings to the aspirations of African entrepreneurs, MADAA is not just making a difference around Africa; it is shaping the future of the continent.

Police Trust Fund Secretary Tours Lagos, Pledges Improved Infrastructure, Standard of Policing  /2024/11/05/police-trust-fund-secretary-tours-lagos-pledges-improved-infrastructure-standard-of-policing/ /2024/11/05/police-trust-fund-secretary-tours-lagos-pledges-improved-infrastructure-standard-of-policing/#respond Tue, 05 Nov 2024 01:11:09 +0000 /?p=1028088

Chiemelie Ezeobi

The Nigerian Police Trust Fund (NPTF) Executive Secretary, Mohammad Sheidu, has expressed commitment to improving the infrastructure and standards of police training facilities across the country, bringing them closer to world standards.

Sheidu, who made this pledge during an assessment tour of the Nigerian Police Force College in Lagos with members of the National Assembly and committee members, addressed key areas needing attention, such as power and water supply, as well as repairing leaking dormitory roofs.

Speaking on the need for transparency, Sheidu assured that the NPTF would implement a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework for all projects to guarantee accountability.

He said, “One of the things we stand for is integrity and accountability. And as I mentioned, I didn’t come here alone to assess this place. I am here with National Assembly members of the country.”

While explaining the role of the monitoring team and the importance for project oversight, he said: “We would as a team have a monitoring and evaluation team. I am here to see what it is that is needed.

” We will get an assessment and by time work starts, there are teams that are going to enable and ensure that, as the project progresses, we embark on what is needed, like lighting, solar installations, or rehabilitation. These teams will monitor the projects from inception to completion.”

The executive secretary’s Lagos tour included inspections of training facilities, dormitories, hostels, and kitchens at the Police College, Police Cottage Clinic; and Police Hospital Area F in Ikeja; Shogunle Police Station; and Alakuko Police Station.

Sheidu noted various issues impacting the college, underscoring that projects would be prioritised to improve the welfare of officers in training.

“I can guarantee you, as I said earlier, it is more about accountability and transparency, and that is why I didn’t come here alone. I came with people who will be able to stand for and vouch for this process.”

Sheidu also shared his impressions after visiting facilities in other states, including Rivers, which he found in worse condition compared to Lagos.

While expressing satisfaction with the state of Lagos facilities, he however said there was need for further improvement.

“From the assessment, like I said earlier, it is a needs assessment, and we will be nationwide. Luckily, I also went to states like Rivers, so the disappointment in a state like Rivers and coming to Lagos—I’m actually happier coming here.”

Pointing out areas that require immediate attention, while acknowledging the longstanding issues with certain structures, he said: “I know what we need to do here is to actually do more. We saw some leaking roofs and things like that—debilitated places—so we will be able to come and rehabilitate them”

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs, Abubakar Yalleman, who joined Sheidu on the tour, praised the Lagos facilities, particularly the efforts of the college’s commandant and his team.

He described the facilities as impressive and commended the staff’s work in maintaining them. “I commend the secretary for carrying us along as he said transparency and accountability is also his motive.”

Yalleman emphasised the committee’s role in ensuring the proper allocation and utilisation of funds, as mandated by Sections 88 and 89 of Nigeria’s constitution.

He further praised the executive secretary for his dedication to transparency, saying, “I commend the secretary for carrying us along as he said transparency and accountability is what is also his motive.”

The commandant of the Nigeria Police College, Fasuba Akinyele, expressed his gratitude for Sheidu’s visit, describing it as a morale booster for the college.

“I’m impressed that he fulfilled his promise. It’s marvelous and a great achievement for us. His visit shows he considers us among many colleges.”

The commandant highlighted the college’s structured communication system, which allows trainees to report issues directly to designated officers, ensuring that concerns are addressed promptly.

He explained, “The trainees can report issues to their General Number One (G1), who then informs the course officer”, adding that the system ensures seamless information flow and prompt issue resolution.”

Sheidu’s visit and the pledge for enhanced support have been well-received by both officials and trainees, reinforcing the NPTF’s mission to uphold transparency and make substantial improvements to policing standards across Nigeria.
