The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has said the Igbo people would not participate in the proposed June 12 Democracy Day protest.

In a statement issued by the Deputy President General of the organisation, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the body noted that the decision to advocate against participation in the June 12 protests was not born out of indifference but a calculated maneuver aimed at safeguarding lives and properties of Igbo people.

He further declared that no protests would be permitted across all seven Igbo-speaking states until their collective questions were adequately addressed by the Nigerian government.

“We wish to convey a crucial, and perhaps uncomfortable, reality to the organisers of the national protests. There exists a unanimous consensus among Ndigbo regarding our refusal to engage in any form of protest, neither in our region nor in other locales across Nigeria where Igbo reside.

“Moreover, it is of utmost importance to inform the public that a clandestine plot is reportedly being contrived in Abuja, Kaduna, Maiduguri, and Lagos by unpatriotic politicians and unscrupulous anti-democratic elements.

“It appears there is an intention to utilise these national protests as instruments of destabilisation against President Tinubu’s administration, all while seeking to cast the Igbo as adversaries of the state. This must not stand unchallenged,” it stated.

Ohanaeze added that Ndigbo has endured horrific experiences in the wake of previous national protests, which were often marred by betrayal and treachery.

“Historical evidence reveals that during such struggles, Igbos have been ruthlessly scapegoated and sacrificially consumed in the frenzy of national unrest.

“For 65 years post-independence, we have witnessed our people suffer disproportionately in anti-government protests, highlighted by an unforgiving tide of violence.

“Compounding these extraordinary challenges are the severe insecurity issues pervading the Southeast, which renders any form of protest not only imprudent but perilous.

“Additionally, it is paramount to assert that we, as Igbos, will not engage in national protests until our urgent demands are addressed, particularly the release of all Igbo prisoners of conscience unlawfully held across various detention centers,” Isiguzoro said.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on the federal government to prioritize the fundamental needs of the Igbo nation.

In a statement issued by the National Deputy President General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the body noted that evidence on ground illustrates that the North has decisively disengaged from President Tinubu, now seeking alliances with influential leaders of Southeast and Niger Delta.

Isiguzoro warned that unless critical federal government policies are urgently reversed and significant corrective measures enacted, the disenchanted Nigerian populace is likely to align themselves with the chorus of opposition voices spearheaded by Northern leaders.

He further added that central to the new strategies to be adopted by the federal government was to ensure inclusive and credible national census in 2025 – one that mandates the incorporation of ethnicity and religious identity as crucial components.

According to Isiguzoro: “Ohanaeze Ndigbo hereby articulates a clarion call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, asserting that no degree of presidential appeasement – be it through appointments or infrastructural promises – can restore the crumbling partnership between his administration and the Northern region that once prospered in 2023”.

“Evidence on the ground illustrates that the North has decisively disengaged from President Tinubu, now seeking alliances with influential leaders from the Southeast and Niger Delta with a singular and urgent objective: to unseat him in the impending 2027 elections”.

“This strategic endeavor aims to unveil the authentic demographic vulnerabilities that underpin the discussions surrounding Northern numerical dominance”.

“Current realities indicate that approximately 39% of Northern Nigeria’s population comprises Igbo communities, while about 31% consists of Middle Belt Christians; the Hausa and Fulani together account for merely 30%”.

“This disproportionate demographic landscape is precisely why Northern leaders have consistently opposed the inclusion of ethnicity and religion in previous census efforts”.

The apex body outlined condition for the support of Tinubu’s reelection and urged the federal government to act decisively, without further delay, by establishing a sixth state for the Southeast and rejuvenating the Eastern Economic Corridor.

“This includes urgently reopening and dredging the Calabar Seaport, which has been dormant for an astonishing 57 years, maximizing the utility of Port Harcourt Seaport, constructing a deep seaport in Azumiri (Ukwa East LGA, Abia State), and upgrading the Port Harcourt-Aba-Enugu-Maiduguri railway to standard gauge. Moreover, the political release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is essential in fostering goodwill and addressing regional grievances, Ohanaeze Ndigbo added.

Isiguzoro further urged the federal government to engage constructively with non-violent Biafra agitators to address the pressing issue of violence and insecurity challenges in the Southeast.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called for the creation of additional two states in the Southeast zone.
In a statement by the Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the apex body said the current imbalance evinced by the northern region, which possesses 19 states exemplified an unjust numerical disadvantage to the South, which is limited to 17 states.

Ohanaeze added that this inequitable distribution has engendered a political structure that disproportionately empowers the North, thus serving as a tool of intimidation against the aspirations of the Southern populace.

“In light of these historical injustices, we passionately implore President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to exhibit the political will and moral courage required to rectify this imbalance.

“The time has come to create two additional states in the South, with an immediate priority accorded to establishing a sixth state in the Southeast.
“This urgent measure is not merely a suggestion but a requisite action to ensure that the Southeast, currently comprising only five states, achieves parity with other geopolitical zones, particularly the Northwest which boasts seven states.

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, as the quintessential voice of the Igbo people, hereby expresses its vehement opposition to the House of Representatives’ recent proposal concerning the creation of thirty-one new states.

“This initiative is not only a farce but also an exercise in futility, lacking the credibility and thoughtful consideration that befits such a significant constitutional matter.

“The bold assertion made by the leadership of the House, particularly through the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who has succinctly dispelled the notion that the proposed states meet requisite constitutional criteria, is commendable and necessary.

“We acknowledge his clarification as an essential step in restoring the dignity of our revered legislative body. It is both premature and juvenile for the House of Representatives to entertain such an ill-considered proposal, one that reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of what constitutes a viable state within our great nation,” he said.

There is palpable tension in Eguho community in Ishielu Local Government of Ebonyi state following alleged threats by hoodlums to attack and kill over 100 people in the area.

ĚÇĐÄĘÓƵ gathered that Eguho has become a flashpoint since the traditional ruler of Ezekunna community, HRH Ezeogo Innocent Nworie and his counterpart of Ezzagu Community, HRH Ezeogo Chinedu Nwankwo were at dagger drawn over territorial jurisdiction of the place.

This incident had resulted to fight for supremacy, making the people of Eguho to agitate for autonomous community to shelve the imminent crisis between the two monarchs.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have appealed to Governor Francis Nwifuru to create Eguho as autonomous community which was initiated during the administration of former Governor Sam Egwu.

They lamented that it was unfortunate that two traditional rulers could be laying claims over jurisdiction which has created tension, confusion and capable of causing total breach of public peace in the place.

However, tension grew last week when voice notes from individuals said to be operating as a gang threatened to unleash deadly attacks on the people of Eguho.

In a petition signed by the Youth Leader of Eguho Development Union, Chetachukwu Nwofia said that the threats have been made on multiple occasions both on video and audio calls.

The petition read: “I, Nwofia Michael Chetachukwu, the youth leader of Eguho hereby submit this petition regarding the ongoing threats to my life and the lives of over one hundred (100) individuals from the community of Eguho perpetrated by a gang identified as a cartel”.

“The individuals responsible whose names and residences are well-known to the people of Eguho continue to terrorise our community possibly due to the silence and fear that they have instilled in the populace.”

“Earlier this year, members of this gang including:  Ugochukwu 911 from Eguho village; Tunder and Chukwudi from Edemugwu village in Ezzagu and others launched a brutal attack on our village (Eguho) firing shots indiscriminately, invading homes, and stealing goods worth millions of Naira, including damage to phone charging shops and stealing over thirty (30) phones from the shop.

The youth leader further called on the security agencies to arrest and prosecute the plotters of the attack.

However, when contacted the Police spokesman in the state, DSP Joshua Ukandu noted that the command has not received any petition and they cannot act in isolation.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on the federal government to impose stringent penalties on any governor abusing their position to browbeat or siphon funds allocated to local councils.

The body implored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action by withholding local government allocations from any state that persisted in these unlawful practices commencing from this month.

In a statement by the Secretary General of the organisation, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the body revealed that governors had colluded to subvert every resource meant for the development of the local areas in the country.

“It is a tragic irony that these custodians of our collective governance are using their offices as instruments of oppression – effectively brutalising the 774 local government areas and sapping them of their financial independence and operational integrity.

“The recent judicial mandate by the Supreme Court, which unequivocally granted full administrative and financial autonomy to local councils, is being flouted with impunity.

“Such conduct is a derision of the foundational tenets of our democratic framework, which relies on the co-equal functioning of the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary branches of government.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo cannot remain silent in the face of this monumental fraud being perpetrated through the brazen manipulation of the local government system.

“The imposition of puppet Chairmen, the controlling influence exerted via state-run electoral commissions, and the alarming emergence of legislation aimed at circumventing Supreme Court decisions are assaults that must be met with resolute resistance,” it stated..

Citing recent actions of the Anambra State House of Assembly, which culminated in the passage of the “Anambra Local Government Administration Law 2024,” Ohanaeze said it served as a glaring example of “legislative madness”.

According to it, “This law seeks not to empower local governance, but rather to entrench a system of coercion, compelling local governments to remit federal allocations to accounts beholden to state authorities.”

The apex Igbo Socio-Cultural Organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has zoned the office of the President General of the body to the Rivers State.

The organization therefore warned two South-east governors and other notable leaders from southwest and Niger Delta who were plotting to impose a candidate from Abia State.

In a statement issued by the Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the body noted that it was the constitutional right of Rivers State to produce the next President General during the forthcoming convention in January 2025.

According to them: “It is paramount to recognize that, as explicitly stipulated in our governing document, the constitutional right of Rivers State to produce the Office of the President General by the dates of January 10-11th, 2025, is both a duty and an honor that must be upheld with the utmost respect and integrity.

“The emergence of the President General from Rivers State through lawful and proper constitutional procedures is not merely a formal requirement; it is essential for fostering unity among the Igbo people.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo has been alarmed by the conspirational efforts of two Southeast governors, alongside a former military general who served as both a Head of State and President of Nigeria from the Southwest, a former 2023 presidential candidate from an opposition party, a notable chieftain of the Pan Niger Delta organization, and several other subversive elements.

“These actors are seemingly united in an effort to undermine the constitutional prerogative of Rivers State and usurp its rightful claim to the presidency of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, instead favoring an individual from Abia State”.

The body insisted that it was increasingly apparent that the aforementioned Southeast governors and the 2023 presidential candidate were complicit in the subversive schemes, driven by political machinations and the calculations surrounding the upcoming 2027 elections.

Ohanaeze assured: “We will prioritize the constitutional rights of Rivers State to elect the next President General, resisting all external influences that seek to impose another candidate from Abia State in direct contravention of our established constitutional framework”.

“We have uncovered the evil plans of the two Southeast governors to continue sponsoring some faceless and non-existent groups bearing Ikwerre ethnic names with the intentions of deny their Igboness and Igbo identities,a ploy to discredit Rivers State from producing the next President General, definitely Ndigbo will always overcome these obstacles.”

The apex body further called on all Igbo interest groups, organizations, and individuals to adopt a unified and cohesive position, ensuring that they remain steadfast in our commitment to preserving Igbo unity.

No fewer than 5,000 stakeholders and youths of Ezza clan in Ebonyi State yesterday threw their support to the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru for the construction of a University of Aeronautics in the state.
In a solidarity rally held at the permanent site of the university at Onueke, the stakeholders praised the governor for the university which they said would advance the economic fortunes of the state.
The people also passed a vote of confidence on the governor and further reiterated their commitments to ensure that the project is completed.
The stakeholders led by the former member representing Ezza South and Ikwo federal constituency, Hon. Laz Ogbee; the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Victor Chukwu and Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Hon. Oguzor Offia-Nwali among others emphasised that the project was the first tertiary institution located at Ezza land since the creation of the state.
According to Ogbee, “We are here to show gratitude to the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru. He has done so many laudable things in Ezza land. But very significantly, we have never had a tertiary institution in the whole of Ezza.
“We are the largest populous clan in Ebonyi State but we have never had any high institution until the emergence of Governor Francis Nwifuru, who has given us a pride of place. So today, the youths of the clan came together to appreciate our dear governor for giving us a University of Aeronautics Engineering.

“That is why you can see we are happy. We started from the university site and marched to our Onueke ancestral market. We are here today to thank our governor for giving us a university. The people of Ezza are proud to thank our governor and his team.”

The apex Igbo socio-political organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on Nigerians criticising the purchase of an Airbus A330 business jet for President Bola Tinubu to consider the safety of the president, who is the leader of the country.

In a statement issued by the Secretary General,Mazi Okechukwu  Isiguzoro, the apex body noted that the decision to acquire a new aircraft was for the security and safety of the president.

According to Ohanaeze, the tragic incidents involving the untimely deaths of former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Malawi’s Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima should serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that could occur to high-ranking officials when adequate measures were not taken to ensure their safety.

The statement read:, “We cannot afford to have a similar tragedy occur in Nigeria, and we must prioritise President Tinubu’s well-being.

“While we understand the frustrations of Nigerians during these challenging economic times, it is essential to recognise that the safety of our President is paramount.

“The opposition leaders criticising the purchase of the new aircraft for President Tinubu are, in essence, expressing a desire for his demise. This is unacceptable and goes against the values of humanity and compassion.

“It is hypocritical for these same leaders to remain silent when extravagant gifts, in the form of SUV Jeeps, were given to all the 10th National Assembly elected lawmakers, including the opposition senators and House of Representatives members, yet they vehemently oppose the purchase of a necessary asset for the safety of our president.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo stands firm in our belief that President Tinubu’s safety must be safeguarded at all costs, and we will not entertain any attempts to jeopardize his well-being.”

Ohanaeze urged President Tinubu to address the concerns of the Nigerian people and take swift action to alleviate their suffering.

“It is imperative that he demonstrates his commitment to the nation’s welfare and works towards finding solutions to our country’s challenges. We implore all Nigerians to remain united in the face of adversity and to prioritize the safety and security of our leaders,” it added.

The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) has commenced the reassessment of medical laboratory facilities and their operators in Ebonyi state.

The exercise, which was being done in collaboration with the Chairman of the Ebonyi state chapter of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Mr. Emmanuel Okeh,  was to ensure that qualified medical laboratory facilities are licensed to operate in the state.

While interacting with journalists in Abakaliki, the Head of MLSCN, Ebonyi State office, Mrs Onyekachuku Okeke and the State AMLSN chairman, Okeh noted that this exercise was not going to be business as usual, and therefore warned that any unauthorised medical laboratory facilities would be shut down.

Okeke explained that she  had visited all relevant stakeholders in the health sector as soon as she assumed office in the state to ensure a seamless exercise.

According to her, “The MLSCN pursuant to its statutory mandate to regulate medical laboratory services in Nigeria and in line with directives of the Hon. Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare commences a nationwide reassessment of medical laboratory facilities in the country.”

“It is in view of the directive that we have commenced enlightenment and sensitisation of the general public especially the owners and operators of all medical laboratory facilities in Ebonyi state about the commencement of the reassessment programme.”

“I have met with relevant stakeholders including the leadership of AMLSN  in Ebonyi,  the Ministry of Health; security agencies and others to cooperate with us and regularise with MLSCN.”

On his part, the AMLSN chairman, Okeh threatened that any quack and medical laboratory impersonator without certification would be arrested and prosecuted.

Okeh said: “It is not going to be business as usual whereby some people will come and do whatever they like and at the end of the day, they will be painting medical laboratory practitioners bad. This time, when we come to your laboratory and find out that you’re a quack or impersonating, we will get you arrested.”

“If you know that you are not qualified to own a laboratory or practice in the medical laboratory profession, is better you close your laboratory. If you own any lab, you have to register with the Ministry of Health in Ebonyi state, after which you come and regularise with MLSCN.”

“Furthermore, stakeholders urged other feuding stakeholders of the party to sheath their divisive swords in the overall interest of the LP and our target to better the lots of Nigerians.”

“That a United LP Ebonyi State Chapter shall pursue with vigour the conversion and registration of new members into the party at the right and designated time and also set a target of over 400,000 members”.

The stakeholders also adopted the 2023 governorship candidate of the party in Ebonyi state, Fidelis Nwankwo as the Leader of the LP in the state.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, has claimed that former Senate President and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, will join the party soon.

Emegha said he had made frantic efforts to bring the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national leader into the APC and he has accepted to join the party.

He said this was why his pictures were used in the local government and councillorship elections APC rally held in Ivo, the former ex-SGF local government yesterday.

Emegha, who stated these during the rally, described Anyim as a critical stakeholder of the APC.

He said on July14, everyone would know that Anyim is a critical stakeholder of APC in South-east.

“I took it personal to be going to him on the need to join us because it will not be possible for the entire south east to be negotiating without a man like him.

“I am a fulfilled person today because I have seen APC poster bearing his name and image in APC rally. It is because of his exigencies that makes him not to be here in this rally.

“I have made frantic and personal efforts and met him in Abuja on the need to join us because of his wealth of experience.

“He is such a wonderful personality and there is no way you can put his picture in our (APC) rally programme without his consent. He has already confirmed to be part of APC and that is why his picture is allowed in our programme today.

“I stand here to announce to us that Senator Anyim Pius Anyim is a member of APC. He is not only an APC member, but a stakeholder in APC.

“By 14th of next month, you will know that he is not only a stakeholder of APC in Ebonyi State, he is a stakeholder in the entire south east of APC,” Emegha stated.

Governor Francis Nwifuru, who was represented by his deputy, Princess Patricia Obila, commended the people for turning out en masse during the rally and urged them to continue to support the APC-led administration in the state.

He assured the people of the state that his administration would resolve the boundary issues in the local government.

Chairman of the local government, Emmanuel Ajah, assured the people that he would provide more democracy dividends if re-elected.

Ohanaeze: Three South-east Governors Sabotaging Efforts to Secure Kanu’s Release /2024/06/25/ohanaeze-three-south-east-governors-sabotaging-efforts-to-secure-kanus-release/ /2024/06/25/ohanaeze-three-south-east-governors-sabotaging-efforts-to-secure-kanus-release/#respond Tue, 25 Jun 2024 03:43:16 +0000 /?p=989129

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has alleged that three Governors of the South east region and some National assembly members, were allegedly plotting to scuttle the out-of-court settlement between the federal government and the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement by the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the body noted the governors and other political leaders were obstructing the progress towards Kanu’s freedom, because of their personal interest and avarice.

He, however, warned all those who seek to obstruct Nnamdi Kanu’s release to be mindful of the repercussions of their actions as the body would sanction them.

“The recent developments surrounding the possible out-of-court settlements between the federal government and Nnamdi Kanu have brought a glimmer of hope to Nigerians and Ndigbo alike.

“The Federal High Court Abuja’s decision to adjourn the proceedings till September 2024, with the directive to both parties to explore negotiations and settlements, indicates a potential path towards justice and reconciliation.

“However, amidst this ray of hope, there are troubling signs of dissent and selfish motives within certain quarters. Some Southeast Governors, along with political elites and misguided elders, seem intent on obstructing the progress toward Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom.

“These individuals, driven by personal interests and avarice, are unwilling to relinquish their grip on power and wealth, even at the expense of justice and peace.

“Additionally, criminals disguising themselves as Biafra agitators, such as Simon Ekpa and his cohorts, continue to perpetrate acts of violence and criminality, further exacerbating the already dire security situation in the Southeast.

“We express our deep concern over the actions of a particular Southeast Governor, who has consistently impeded Nnamdi Kanu’s release since May 2022 for selfish political reasons and fear of Kanu’s opposition to his government.

“The missed opportunity during Former President Buhari’s visit to Ebonyi for the commissioning of the Ebionyi International Airport on 5th May 2022, due to the governor’s interference, is a clear indication of political sabotage.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo will not stand idly by as these governors continue to undermine the interests of the people for their gains,” it said,

The group also added that the people of the Southeast were weary of the ongoing insecurity challenges and economic disruptions that have plagued the region and any attempts to subvert the process towards peace and justice would not be tolerated.

Ebonyi State Government yesterday said it has revitalised the Ezzamgbo pipe production and building materials industries, which have been moribund for over 24 years in the state.

The state Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and ĚÇĐÄĘÓƵ Development, Chief Oguzor Offia Nwali, made this disclosure while addressing journalists on the achievements his ministry has recorded in the past one year.

According to him, “When I came on board as the ministry leader, one of the very first task I got from my principal is to resuscitate and revalidate the dilapidated pipe production industry.

“There was a total overhauling of the place and all needed pieces of equipment were purchased, fixed and it became functional.

“In sequential orders, the approvals include: procurement and installation of one number Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) machine for use at EPPC Ezzamgbo. replacement of vandalised armored cables at EPPC Ezzamgbo.

The Senate Committee chairman on Information and National Orientation and Senator representing Ebonyi Central Zone, Senator Ken Eze, has secured employment opportunities for over 40 graduates in various federal government ministries and parastatals within his one year in office.

Briefing journalists on his one-year stewardship in office, Senator Eze added that he has been able to pay West African Examination Certificate fees for about 300 indigent students from his zone.

His words: “I’ve paid WAEC registration fees for over 300 indigent students from my constituency who would have missed WAEC registration due to lack of funds and, also paid school fees for over 200 indigent students of tertiary institutions from the same zone.

“I followed it up by securing permanent and pensionable employment in federal government agencies for over forty graduates. When the trickled-down effect is considered, this translates to pulling over 200 of his constituents out of poverty.

“I have also restored electricity light in many communities across Ebonyi Central Zone. Installation of Solar Street light at different locations across Ebonyi Central Zone. Drilling of boreholes for the people at different locations. Periodic cash grant to the youths and stakeholders of Ebonyi Central Zone to cushion the effects of the present economic reality.

“Distribution of over 100 cows, 10,000 bags of rice, other household items and cash running in millions of naira to the people of Ebonyi Central Senatorial District during 2023 Christmas celebration. Consistent sponsorship of unity and peace advocacy across Ebonyi Central Senatorial District, and particularly in Ezza Ezekuna Clan.

“I view human capital development as not just morally imperative for collective and individual growth, but a necessity and a veritable tool to unlock the potentials of any given individual or group.

“Recognizing the importance of an institutional framework for effective human capital development, I sponsored the Bill to establish the Federal Polytechnic, Onueke, Ezza South LGA in Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone of Ebonyi State. This Bill, when passed, will widen opportunities and improve access to quality vocational and technical educational training in Information and Communication Technology, ICT, and applied sciences for youths not just in Ebonyi Central but beyond.

“This will result in the mopping of thousands of talented youths and producing graduates fit for today’s competitive market economy, Senator Eze said.

He enumerated some of his bills sponsored which included a bill for an Act to establish Federal Polytechnic Onueke 2023 among other bills.

According to him: “other bills and motions sponsored and moved include

The apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has alleged that the South-east governors, Igbo leaders, and members of the National Assembly were plotting to prolong the detention of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, till 2027.

In a statement issued by Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo,, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the body blamed the South-east governors for the deteriorating security situation in the zone

Isiguzoro said, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo decries and brings to light the plots by South-east governors, Igbo elders, and National Assembly members to prolong Nnamdi Kanu’s detention until 2027.

“The failure of some South-east governors to utilise their political ties to advocate for Kanu’s release is regrettable and underscores self-interest over communal welfare.”

The organisation stated that the South-east governors and certain Igbo leaders had not provided the essential assurances required to explore political resolutions for the release of Kanu.

According to Isiguzoro, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo underscores the crucial need for unity and cooperation among South-east governors and esteemed Igbo personalities, such as Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Pa Ebitu Ukiwe, Sen. Ike Nwachukwu, and others, in providing the federal government with assurances regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s future conduct post-release.

“Regrettably, it appears some South-east governors and Igbo elite have chosen to exploit Nnamdi Kanu’s detention for personal gain, political bargaining, and the pursuit of political relevance.”

The body noted that it was disheartening that certain South-east governors and Igbo leaders only visited Kanu at the DSS facility to take photographs rather than actively seeking political solutions for his release.

The statement said, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo expresses deep concern over the behaviour of South-east governors, senators, representatives, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and other prominent Igbo figures who prioritise visits to Kanu in detention over seeking his release and addressing the pressing security challenges in our region.

“It is paramount for Ndigbo to hold South-east governors, Igbo elders, National Assembly members, and traditional rulers accountable for the extended detention of Nnamdi Kanu, and refrain from laying blame on the federal government or President Tinubu.

“The federal government awaits a united stance and commitments from the Igbo community to facilitate a potential release of Nnamdi Kanu.”

Isiguzoro urged all stakeholders in the South-east to set aside personal ambitions and unite in the pursuit of Kanu’s release and the resolution of security challenges in our region.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on President Bola Tinubu to halt property demolitions in Lagos, release Nnamdi Kanu, enhance trade policies, and reopen the Calabar Seaport to stimulate economic growth in the country.

The body also lauded President Tinubu for the strides made in his first year in office, expressing optimism for the future.

In a statement issued by the Secretary General of the organisation, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the body declared Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi as the best performing minister in Tinubu’s cabinet.

The organization also advocated the removal of underperforming ministers to drive progress and efficiency.

Isiguzoro noted that despite inherited challenges such as a retrogressive economy, treasury looting, and infrastructural decay, President Tinubu has demonstrated the political will to overcome these obstacles even more effectively than the previous 8 years under former President Buhari.

According to Ohaneze, “The first year of President Bola Tinubu’s administration has been heralded as a period of progress and development by Ohanaeze Ndigbo. Despite inherited challenges such as a retrogressive economy, treasury looting, and infrastructural decay, President Tinubu has demonstrated the political will to overcome these obstacles more effectively than the previous 8 years under former President Buhari.

“During Buhari’s tenure, the Southeast region faced deliberate economic suppression and targeting, leading to strife and insecurity. In contrast, President Tinubu’s administration has fostered hope and progress in the Southeast through initiatives like the ongoing road reconstruction and rehabilitation projects led by Senator Dave Umahi, fostering economic activity and inclusivity.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo unequivocally declares Senator Dave Umahi as the best-performing Minister in the Federal Executive Council due to his diligence, dedication, and innovative ideas that have reshaped the region’s narrative. The organization also commends Minister Nyesom Wike for his visionary leadership, Minister Toju-Ojo for his reformative efforts, and presidential aide Bayo Ononuga for his invaluable contribution to promoting President Tinubu’s vision.”

Ohanaeze Ndigbo further affirmed its commitment to partnering with the government and urged opposition leaders to join hands with President Tinubu to rebuild the nation for prosperity and progress.

The Ebonyi South senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 3, 2024, by-election in the state, Silas Onu, said he would appeal the ruling of the tribunal that struck out his petition that the Judges should be sacked over alleged bias, injustice and lack of fair hearing in his election petition.

The ruling was sequel to a petition filed to the President of Court of Appeal and copied to the Tribunal Panel seeking their recusal from the bye-election tribunal by the PDP candidate.

The three-man panel headed by Justice H.N Kunaza dismissed Onu’s petition for lacking in merit.

Delivering the ruling by the tribunal sitting in Abakaliki, Justice Kunaza, who was flanked by Justice Bassey Bassey Nkanang and Justice M.O Agboola, said that the PDP candidate failed to prove allegations of lack of fair hearing, bias and injustice in his petition.

Meanwhile, the petitioner noted that he would immediately appeal the ruling, insisting that he has lost confidence in the ability to dispense justice in the election petition by the panel.

Onu wondered why the panel didn’t suspend all actions to await the decision of the President of the Court of Appeal.

The PDP candidate said: “I will also make a personal letter to the panel to know why they are more interested in the election petition than me, and why they aren’t staying all actions to await the decision of the President of the Court of Appeal. We will also appeal their ruling. I don’t have any confidence in the panel. They have to go for justice to prevail in our election petitions.”

Onu’s counsel, Caleb Onwe, said he would immediately apply for the certified true copy of the ruling and study it for urgent actions.

Meanwhile, counsel to Senator Anthony Okorie and second respondent, Roy Nweze, commended the ruling but expressed dissatisfaction that no cost was awarded against the petitioner to serve as deterrent to anyone who tries to malign the integrity of Judges.

Ebonyi Bye-Election Tribunal: PDP Candidate Calls for Sack of Panel over Alleged Bias, Injustice /2024/05/01/ebonyi-bye-election-tribunal-pdp-candidate-calls-for-sack-of-panel-over-alleged-bias-injustice/ Wed, 01 May 2024 11:02:00 +0000 https://admin.thisdaylive.com/?p=973771

Benjamin Nworie in Abakaliki

The Ebonyi South senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 3 by-election in Ebonyi State, Silas Onu, has called for the disbandment of the three-man tribunal panel over an alleged bias and lack of fair hearing.

In a petition addressed to the President of the Court of Appeal and the Judges, including Justice H.N Kunaza, Justice Bassey Bassey Nkanang and Justice M.O Agboola, Onu maintained that he does not have any confidence in the ability to dispense justice in the petition by the panel.

The petitioner noted that continuing with the panel was tantamount to having a sealed fate, as nothing just can come out from them.

Onu said: “On April 15, 2024, upon the closing of pleadings and an application for the issuance of pre-hearing notice, electoral materials, specifically the BVAS was specifically pleaded in the petition.”

“The motion was opposed by the 2nd and 3rd respondent on the grounds other than law or facts, while the 1st respondents (INEC) against whom the application was made did not oppose it.

“We made our case for the grant of the order for inspection to be done during the trail and supported the application with a recent Supreme Court decision showing that the tribunal has the power to grant such an application in the interest of justice.

“The 2nd and 3rd respondents also pleaded the BVAS in their respective replies to the petition. On April 27, 2024, the tribunal delivered it’s ruling on the application dismissing same on the ground that granting it will amount to amending the petition.

“This claim by the tribunal can best be described as arguing the case of the respondent in the most untruthful manner, and it can never be acceptable to me and should not be allowed to infest the already beleaguered reputation of the Nigeria judiciary, especially in election cases.

“Firstly, in refusing the application, the tribunal claimed that the petitioner did not plead BVAS. This is not only false, but manifestly wicked and clearly intended to pervert justice by denying the petitioner the right to present their case and evidence before the Tribunal, because the BVAS was copiously pleaded in paragraph 42(16) of the petition at page 32.

“As if their blatant disregard for justice was not enough, the tribunal, without availing me with a copy of the ruling for my perusal so as to decide the next line of action, had hurriedly fixed April 30, 2024, for tendering of documents from the Bar on May 2, 2024, for opening my case which by their pre-hearing report should close by May 3 2024.”

He noted that the petition was not intended to substitute the judicial remedy for the biased ruling which would be appealed against but it was an administrative approach which has become necessary as the petitioner no longer have confidence in the ability of the panel to be neutral.

Meanwhile, the counsel to Senator Anthony Ani, Roy Umahi, expressed regret over the call for the disbandment of the tribunal panel.

Umahi, who was enraged passed vote of no confidence on the panel, noted that the panel had corrected the “slip” made in their rulings.

Suspected gunmen at the early hours of yesterday attacked the police check point at Ishieke junction in Ebonyi State and killed one police officer.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Joshua Ukandu, said the hoodlums also burnt the police patrol vehicle.

He explained that the hoodlums shot sporadically at the officers, who engaged them fiercely and were able to repel them.

According to him, “On April 11, 2024, at about 7:15a.m., hoodlums in an ash colour Toyota Sienna vehicle attacked the police check point at Isheke junction in Ebonyi LGA of Ebonyi State. However, one of the officers was fatally wounded and a patrol vehicle set ablaze.”

DSP Ukandu noted that though normalcy has been restored to the area, the state Commissioner of Police, Augustina Ogbodo, has immediately deployed police operatives to the scene, and they were on the trail of the hoodlums.

The PPRO further called on well-meaning individuals in the state to avail the Command with useful information that would aid in apprehending the fleeing hoodlums while noting that the Command remains resolute in its fight against crimes, and ready to protect lives and property.
