Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has expressed deep sorrow and concern over the tragic incident that occurred during an Easter procession in Billiri, in the state, which resulted in the loss of five lives and injuries to many others.

The unfortunate incident reportedly occurred on Monday when a trailer truck transporting grains from Adamawa State to Gombe suffered brake failure and lost control, veering into a group of Christian faithful who were participating in a religious procession to mark the Easter celebration.

Reacting to the tragedy, Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the incident as heartbreaking and regrettable.

His words: “This is a dark and painful moment for the families affected and for all of us as a people.

“On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the swift and full recovery of those currently receiving treatment.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Christian community in Billiri and beyond, as well as with all those affected by this terrible tragedy.

“As a government, we are committed to ensuring that the victims receive the best possible medical care”.

Meanwhile, Governor Inuwa Yahaya has directed the relevant authorities to immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident and vowed that those found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

“We will ensure that those responsible are held accountable, and decisive action will be taken against anyone found wanting in this incident,” the governor stated.

“The safety and well-being of our citizens remain our top priority. While we mourn, I call on all residents of Billiri and the entire state to remain calm and law-abiding. We must resist the temptation to allow grief and anger to lead us into actions that could further endanger lives or disrupt the peace we have worked so hard to build.

“The security agencies have been directed to maintain law and order, and to engage with community leaders to promote peace and mutual understanding at this critical time”.

The governor noted that Gombe State is renowned for its harmony and spirit of tolerance, expressing confidence that, as a people, “we will overcome this tragedy through compassion, understanding, and a sense of unity.”

The Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr Lawal Mohammed, has called on all the 222 senior secondary school principals in the state to support the government’s drive to build excellence-driven education systems.

He stated this recently in Bauchi at the maiden terminal meeting with the principals and management of the ministry.

The commissioner also urged them to work closely with their teachers to build an inclusive and innovative education system that would prepare students for the realities of the modern world.

According to him, for the government to achieve this feat, the principals must focus on improving infrastructure and resources, supporting teachers and school leaders through system strengthening, and enhancing student outcomes through character, creativity, and critical thinking.

“We will work to ensure that our schools are equipped with the necessary tools, technology, and environments that promote effective teaching and learning,” said Mohammed. “You, our principals and teachers, deserve not only recognition but also the training, motivation, and support that enable you to thrive in your roles.”

He added, “Our success will be measured by the success of our students. We must nurture not only academic excellence but also character, creativity, and critical thinking.”

While warning the principals against laxity and other forms of abuse of office, the commissioner emphasised the need for collaboration and innovative approaches among the school managers for better educational delivery.

“I urge us all to embrace innovation, to be open to change, and to always put the best interests of our students first,” stated the education commissioner. “Let us lead by example. Let us build schools where discipline, dedication, and dignity reign.”

In their separate remarks, the ministry’s directors advised the principals to delegate responsibilities to assigned officers, process examination results before holidays, and ensure safe and clean environments.

The special advisers to Gov. Bala Mohammed on Education and Technical, Science and Vocational Education, Alhaji Adamu Zakari and Prof Madugu Yalams, urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s education.

They harped on the need to give more preference to technical and vocational education.

Responding on behalf of the principals, Mr. Rabiu Shehu, the state President of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), called for the domestication of the new teachers’ years of service, condition of service and recruitment of more teachers for optimum service delivery.

The commissioner also distributed teaching and learning aids provided under the Accelerated Senior Secondary Education Programme (ASSEP) to some selected schools across the state.

Gombe State Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Yahaya has expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for approving the State’s request for the takeover and conversion of the newly reconstructed State government-owned General Hospital, Kumo into a Federal Medical Centre (FMC).

Yahaya, while reacting to the development emphasised that the takeover of the new state-of- the-art medical facility by the federal government would significantly improve healthcare delivery in the State and the northeast sub-region.

The Governor noted that the upgraded facility would serve as a teaching hospital for both the Federal University of Kashere and Lincoln University, Kumo, with the expectation that those to be trained in these institutions as medical practitioners would improve the State’s workforce in the health sector upon completion of their education.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing quality and affordable healthcare service, as evidenced by the remodelling of the specialist hospital in Gombe, two general hospitals in Bajoga and Kaltungo, and construction of a brand-new general hospital in Kumo, as well as revitalisation of the 114 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state among other strides in the health sector.

“I am excited about the approval by our dear President,  Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the takeover and conversion of the General Hospital Kumo to a Federal Medical Centre.

“This development will no doubt enhance the delivery of quality healthcare services to our people in Gombe state and our neighbouring states,” the Governor stated.

“Upon completing the reconstruction and equipping of the Kumo Hospital, which is a 200-bed-capacity ultramodern facility designed to provide comprehensive healthcare service, we requested for its takeover and conversion by the federal government into an FMC, especially since the former FMC in Gombe had been upgraded to a Federal Teaching Hospital.

“Today Mr. President has graciously approved our request. On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State, we express our sincere appreciation to the President for this gesture.

“I equally appreciate the support of my dear brother, the Hon. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Mohammed Ali Pate,” Yahaya further remarked.

The Presidency had while announcing the president’s approval for the takeover of the Kumo hospital, acknowledged the commitment of Governor Yahaya to improving healthcare sector in Gombe state, saying “The federal government also recognises the State’s commitment to improving its health sector in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which encompasses comprehensive reforms in healthcare.”

The Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has commended the Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State for his unwavering support for local government financial autonomy, in line with the Supreme Court’s judgment of last year.

According to a press statement issued to journalists on Monday by Isaac Abrak, Chairman, Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP), “This landmark ruling reaffirmed the constitutional authority of local government councils to manage their funds independently, free from state government interference.

The statement also stated that Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s decision to grant local government chairmen in Gombe State full control over their funds without undue interference is a testament to his respect for the rule of law and commitment to grassroots development.

The statement read: “His actions not only demonstrate compliance with the Supreme Court’s directive but also reflect his dedication to strengthening democracy and fostering sustainable development at the local level.

“This also shows his alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision to combat poverty and insecurity by directly empowering the 774 local government councils across Nigeria.”

The NCYP urged all Nigerians, particularly other state governors, to emulate Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s exemplary leadership, saying he has displayed remarkable integrity by refusing to manipulate the Joint Account and Allocation Committee (JAAC) system, which in some states has been used to divert funds meant for local government councils.

The statement further added: “Rather than exploiting administrative loopholes, he has allowed local councils to directly manage and allocate resources for the benefit of their communities.

“We also recognize the crucial role of financial regulatory agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) in ensuring transparency and accountability in fund management.

“Notably, EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has emphasized that local government chairmen do not enjoy immunity and that the commission is actively monitoring their activities through the newly established Fraud Risk Assessment and Control (FRAC) system.

“This initiative serves as a deterrent to mismanagement, ensuring that funds meant for grassroots development are utilized appropriately”.

The Youths further urged the Chairmen of the 11 local government areas in Gombe State to uphold the trust placed in them by Governor Inuwa Yahaya and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

They must ensure transparent and effective utilization of these funds to improve the lives of grassroots citizens, pointing out that, “By doing so, they will serve as role models for their counterparts across the country”.

The NCYP also called on the Federal Committee responsible for implementing Local Government Financial Autonomy, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to provide forthright updates on the progress and challenges faced.

This reform is a pro-masses, national initiative, and public engagement is vital for its success. However, the public can only play its part effectively if it is adequately informed and carried along in the implementation process.

“We urge all stakeholders, including civil society organizations and the National Assembly, to support this cause and ensure the complete enforcement of this constitutional provision.

“A strong and financially independent local government system is essential for Nigeria’s progress and democratic consolidation”, concluded the NCYP.

•Vows to clear all gratuity obligations before end of tenure

Segun Awofadeji in Gombe

Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has presented cheques totaling N4.2 billion to over 2,000 retirees in continuation of his commitment to settling outstanding gratuities inherited from the previous administration.

The payments follow last week’s State Executive Council meeting, where EXCO approved the disbursement to retirees who served the state and retired between 2019 and 2020.

In his address Monday, Governor Inuwa Yahaya revealed his administration has so far settled N17.235 billion out of the N21 billion backlog of unpaid gratuities inherited from the past government.

He assured the public that all outstanding payments would be cleared before the end of his tenure.

His words: “Today’s event demonstrates our resolve to leave no liabilities behind. I am pleased to reaffirm that it is our solemn commitment to clear all gratuity obligations before the end of our tenure in 2027.

“By doing so, we aim to leave a legacy of accountability and compassion, thus ensuring no retiree is left without the benefits they so rightly deserve.

“Since assuming office, my administration has prioritized the welfare of our retirees and civil servants. We have settled gratuities for 11,685 retirees, amounting to over N13 billion for those who retired between 2014 and 2018.

“Today, we are disbursing N4.2 billion to another 2,024 retirees who left service between 2019 and 2020.”

He stated that for the local government retirees, his administration has adopted a pragmatic approach by aligning each local government’s payment capacity with its financial resources.

He however, assured that talks are ongoing with the local government chairmen to work out implementable plans that local government retirees will further benefit from a similar gesture as their counterparts at the state level.

The governor also highlighted that as part of effort to enhance the welfare of civil servants, his administration recently implemented the N70,000 minimum wage for state government workers, a bold step he said has reflected his administration’s determination to shield civil servants from the harsh realities of economic challenges, particularly in the aftermath of the fuel subsidy removal.

He also stated his government revitalized the civil service through structural reforms, including the establishment of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, the introduction of a biometric attendance system to enhance transparency, and the rationalization of ministries to reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies while ensuring regular promotions with financial implications.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya further commended the labour unions, retiree associations, and other stakeholders for their patience, cooperation, and constructive dialogue throughout this process, saying “your support has been instrumental in guiding our reforms and ensuring the welfare of civil servants remains a top priority for our administration.”

Speaking on behalf of the leadership and members of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Gombe State Chapter, Barr. Aliyu Gadalima Doho, commended the governor for his compassionate leadership and the unprecedented efforts to address the backlog of gratuities.

He noted that many pensioners had endured financial difficulties over the years before the coming of his administration, describing the payment as a “lifesaver” for retirees and their dependents.

Earlier in his welcome address, the State Auditor-General and Chairman of the Standing Committee to Review and Ascertain the Correctness of Outstanding Gratuity and its Payment, Muhammed Buba, applauded Governor Yahaya for consistently allocating funds for the payment of backlog of gratuities neglected by the previous administration since 2014.

He assured the governor and the senior citizens that his committee will continue to work on its mandate for the benefit of the retired civil servants.

The Bauchi State Government, yesterday, denied reports that it threatened President Bola Tinubu and the presidency over the controversial tax reform bills, saying what it did was to speak against the bad decisions and policies of the government.

It reacted to the statement by the  presidency asking Governor Bala Mohammed to retract his “threat” to President Tinubu.

In a press statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Comrade Mukhtar Gidado titled: “Re – Presidency’s Misleading Statement on Governor Bala Mohammed’s Remarks on Tax Reform”, the state government declared that Mohammed did not in any way threaten the Presidency or President Tinubu but rather spoke against bad decisions and policies that could worsen the plight of the masses across the country.

According to the government, “The attention of the Bauchi State Government has been drawn to a statement issued by the Presidency, accusing Governor Bala Mohammed of branding the federal government’s tax reform as “anti-North” and unfairly criticising the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“We find it necessary to set the record straight and highlight the facts surrounding Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration and its unwavering commitment to the socio-economic development of Bauchi State and the nation.

“To start with, it is the height of mischief that Governor Bala Mohammed’s candid advice on the dangers of proceeding with bad decisions or policies that could worsen the plight of the masses, has been taken out of context, as a threat on the presidency.

“It would have been out of character for him to threaten the President or the presidency, an institution for which he has the greatest respect.

“His remarks were essentially precautionary, given the deep-seated frustrations caused by the prevailing economic situation, and were aimed at ensuring that the proposed tax reforms are equitable, inclusive, and sensitive to the unique socio-economic challenges of the constituent parts of the country.

“His overall aim, as he has always done, was to foster dialogue and advocate for policies that protect the interests of ordinary Nigerians, particularly those in economically disadvantaged states.

“When Governor Bala Mohammed asserted that the Presidency’s attempt to shove the discredited tax reforms down the throat of Nigerians was a recipe for anarchy, he spoke from the position of someone who is closer to the populace and who carries the mandate of not only the over seven million people of Bauchi State but who also possesses an intimate knowledge of a very significant subregional group in the country.

“It is not by accident that his genuine reservation against the tax reforms coincides with those of some APC governors, who have consistently warned against implementing the proposed reform in its present form.

“Therefore, it smacks of a disingenuous attempt at blackmail and a throwback to the insensitivity of the government to single Bala Mohammed out for inquisition. Could it be because he is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)?”

It, therefore, pointed out that, “If the Presidency had genuinely desired an all-inclusive tax reform that would command the buy-in of various stakeholder and subnational groups in the country, it could have subjected a draft to discussion before railroading it to the National Assembly. It did not.

“Even when it was given a soft landing by the National Economic Council, NEC, a body headed by the Vice President of the country and which, by that token, was expected to command the respect of the president, its advice that the reform be taken back was blatantly disregarded. So, who is against dialogue?

“To put it mildly, it is dishonest to accuse Governor Bala Mohammed, as the Presidency has done in its face-saving response, of adopting an anti-dialogue or unstatesmanlike posture.

“That is not the antecedent of Bala Mohammed who, at different times in his illustrious service to the nation, has stuck his neck out to uphold those principles that strengthen national cohesion, constitutionalism and good governance.”

As part of their commitment to safeguard the lives of women and children and to ensure a healthy society, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the Canadian government has provided over 4,300 bottles of vitamin A to the Bauchi State Government.

The Chief of Field Office of the UNICEF in Bauchi, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, who disclosed this at the launching of the second round of the 2024 Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) in Bauchi, weekend, said the Canadian Government, in collaboration with UNICEF, had provided the state with over 4,300 bottles of Vitamin A which will translate to 1,405,400 doses.

The Chief of Field office pointed out that the vitamin A valued at N65 million, will go a long way in enhancing and improving the health of pregnant mothers.

According to her, UNICEF has extended direct cash assistance of N31.6 million to the state government, through the State Primary Healthcare Development Board, to support health interventions for children.

The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) is a week-long initiative providing healthcare interventions to pregnant women, lactating mothers, infants, and children under the age of five.

On her part, the First Lady and wife of Bauchi State Governor, Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed, emphasised the vital role women play in improving family health and urged them to cultivate nutritious foods in their backyards to protect their children and families from malnutrition.

The First Lady reiterated the commitment of the present administration led by her husband towards improving the healthcare system in the state.

She called on parents to avail their children the opportunity to benefit from the myriad interventions being provided.

Also speaking, Commissioner of Health, Dr Sani Mohammed Dambam, highlighted significant progress made by the state, as reflected in the latest data from the 2023/2024 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS).

He stated that the state’s immunisation coverage for children aged U-5 had improved from 33% in the NnDHS (20I8) to 58% in the 2023/2024 data.

The Commissioner explained that Penta 3 vaccine coverage has increased substantially, with coverage for measles vaccines rising from 7% in the 2018 NDHS to 27% in the current survey.

He therefore commended Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State for showing strong commitment to addressing health challenges, through prioritizing health as a central pillar of his administration towards improving of healthcare infrastructure and increased budgetary allocation to the sector.

The Commissioner however acknowledged the rise in maternal mortality rate, where he called for deliberate effort towards bringing down the disturbing figures.

*Red Cross: 108 Mpox cases recorded in 27 states

Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi and John Shiklam in Kaduna

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and other stakeholders, have launched a nationwide preventive campaign on the outbreak of Lassa fever.
Relatedly, Director of Health and Care at the Nigerian Red Cross, Dr. Mannir Jega, disclosed that 108 Mpox cases had been confirmed in 27 states across the country.  Jega revealed this on Wednesday in Kaduna at the training of health workers from 15 states. He said Bayelsa State had the highest number of Mpox cases in the country, while the North-central region had the highest cases in the northern part of the country.
Flagging off the campaign in Bauchi on Wednesday with a press briefing at the Federal Secretariat, Director-General of NOA, Lanre Isa-Onilu, declared, “Our objective is to educate Nigerians on the risks, prevention, and control measures to combat Lassa fever.”
Isa-Onilu, who was represented by the Bauchi State Director of NOA, Mrs. Theresa Omaga, explained, “This press conference is a critical step in our efforts to mobilise Nigerians to take proactive measures against this deadly disease, especially that we are now in the dry season, a period of heightened vulnerability to the spread of Lassa fever.”
He stated, “As you may be aware, Lassa fever has claimed precious lives in some parts of the country. This outbreak underscores the importance of collective action in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. We mourn the loss of lives and express solidarity with the affected families.”
Isa-Onilu added, “We urge all Nigerians to take note of the following: Lassa fever is preventable, maintain good hygiene practices, including regular hand washing with soap and water, store food in rodent-proof containers, avoid contact with infected persons or contaminated materials and report suspected cases to the nearest health facility promptly.”
He also stated, “As the agency of government responsible for value reorientation and attitudinal change with robust network, platforms and structures, we shall be doing the following: deploy our network of state and local government offices to disseminate information and utilise various media channels to amplify prevention messages.”
The agency will also engage community leaders, traditional rulers, and influencers to mobilise grassroots support, and collaborate with schools to integrate Lassa fever and other infectious diseases prevention into their teaching engagements, he said.
The director-general said called on Nigerians to “take personal responsibility for preventing Lassa fever, support public health initiatives and report any suspicious cases”.
Isa-Onilu added, “We appreciate the support of the NCDC and other stakeholders within the One Health sector for their partnership and collaboration. Together, with little actions, we can change the narrative for good for the betterment of our country in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President.”
According to him, “The fight against Lassa fever requires a collective effort. We must work together to prevent further spread and protect our citizens. I urge you, members of the press, to join us in amplifying these critical messages.”
Jega said preparedness plans were being developed aimed at reducing transmission of the disease as well as protecting vulnerable populations in low-burden states.
According to him, the Nigerian Red Cross, in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Health, NCDC, and their partners at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, had activated a robust response plan.
He explained, “Mpox is a critical public health issue affecting our nation and the world.
“The Mpox outbreak has been declared a global health emergency by both the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Africa CDC. Unfortunately, Nigeria is among the affected countries.
“The latest figures from NCDC revealed 108 confirmed Mpox cases out of 1,395 suspected cases this year, spanning 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
“While we are fortunate that no fatalities have been recorded thus far, we must act decisively to prevent further spread and mitigate its impact.”
According to him, a similar training on combating the outbreak of the disease has been conducted in 17 states.
He said the current training programme included participants from Kano, Kaduna, Borno, Edo, and among other states.

*Says 16 years of PDP rule best in democratic dispensation

The Zonal Working Committee and states chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Northeast Zone, have declared support for the recent decision taken by the party’s governors’ forum on the leadership crisis rocking its National Working Committee (NWC).

The zone also observed that the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC)-led federal administration has brought untold hardship to the generality of Nigerians, while no proactive measures were being taken to remedy the situation.

The  Zonal PDP at the end of its meeting held in Bauchi, stressed that the meeting was necessitated by the current happening at the national level of the party.

The meeting reflected on the 16 years of the PDP at the helms of affairs as a ruling party and how it lost out to the APC in 2015 declaring that, “The PDP years were indeed a blessing to the Nation.”

The meeting agreed that it was the only party that couldprovide the needed solution to the current challenges facing the nation, thus making it the last hope of Nigerians as the ‘messiah’ for salvation.

The well-attended meeting deliberated extensively on moving the party forward, made resolutions and issued a communique signed by the Zonal Secretary, Kabiru Bappa Jauro, on behalf of the Zonal Chairman, Rev Emmanuel Bovoa and read by the Adamawa State Chairman, Tahir Shehu.

The meeting stated that since the inception of democratic rule in 1999, the PDP had been dominant in the North East sub-region, producing a former Vice President, former/Serving Governors, former/serving National Chairmen, former/serving National Assembly and State Assembly Members making the Party to have tremendously contributed to the socio economic development of the Zone, and Nigeria at large.

“As regards to the National Chairmanship tussle, the meeting wishes to align itself in-toto with the position of the governors, the BOT, National Assembly Caucus and all the Major critical stakeholders in the Zone. This, we believe shall bring decorum and sanity that will lead the party to lofty heights.”

Keep Faith with Tinubu, Tuggar Appeals to Nigerians /2024/10/14/keep-faith-with-tinubu-tuggar-appeals-to-nigerians/ /2024/10/14/keep-faith-with-tinubu-tuggar-appeals-to-nigerians/#respond Mon, 14 Oct 2024 04:44:30 +0000 /?p=1021408

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the administration of President Bola Tinubu because of the hardship they are facing, assuring that there is going to be light at the end of the tunnel.

Tuggar made the plea over the weekend while fielding questions from journalists during an interactive session at the Tuggar Foundation office, Bauchi.

He stated that Nigeria was not the only country facing hardship currently, stressing that it is a situation that equally affects other parts of the world.

According to him, the policies of the past administration contributed greatly to the hardship in the country.

Tuggar also blamed the 2008 global financial meltdown and other unavoidable calamities that affected the world, such as the coronavirus pandemic.

He stated, “Nigerians over the years have been importing petrol. We had four refineries, two were built in the 1960s in Port Harcourt. We have the Kaduna and the Warri refineries. These were built when Nigeria’s population was much smaller than what it is today.

“Today we have a population of 220 million, which means the consumption of petrol has gone up, but we have not over the years been expanding our refining capacity, which made us to be importing more petrol as the price was going up globally.

“The other issue is, of course, the exchange rate, which was equally affected by the subsidy. If we are subsidising consumption and not subsidising production because what we ought to be doing over those years was to be subsidising production and industries so that we can prosper. But, unfortunately, a lot of money was going into subsidising the importation of petroleum product.

“When President Tinubu came into office, he made the decision to institute macro-economic reforms. Even if we decided not to make those reforms, we could no longer afford to be buying expensive petrol that we could be using on a daily basis. So, the president embarked on the reforms, which meant that we would no longer be subsidising the importation of petrol.”

Tuggar said there were different exchange rates for different purposes, which created room for arbitrary practices.

According to him, “Some people were getting allocation of foreign exchange of dollars, which they will not use to import the raw materials that industries require but, instead, will sell it in the market and just put the money in their pocket.

“So, President Tinubu closed the exchange rate so that we will have one exchange rate. While all this was going on, the activities of crypto currency traders were undermining the system. There was in particular a crypto currency exchange that was taking advantage of these reforms and was using the opportunity to launder money.

“People who had stolen money and had kept it here in Nigeria were using crypto currency to take the money out, which meant that they were undermining the reforms that the Tinubu administration was carrying out and that of course led to further hardship.

“That is why some of the individuals that were involved in these nefarious activities or representatives of the crypto currencies traders have been arrested and have been charged to court.”

The minister explained that the president had been doing a lot to reduce the current hardship in the country, with the distribution of palliatives to citizens and fertiliser, inputs, seedlings, and pesticides to farmers.

He stated that the reforms were something that the current administration had to do to safeguard the future of the country.

“We are beginning to feel the impact, though it is slow, but we have to remember that Nigeria is not in isolation. This hardship is taking place all over the world so we will continue to remain steadfast,” Tuggar stated.

In a bid to address the shortage of health workers and physicians in his constituency, a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Jaafar Gambo Leko, representing Bogoro, Dass, and Tafawa Balewa in Bauchi, has sponsored 83 students to study at the Bill and Melinda Gates College of Health Sciences and Technology in Ningi.

Leko, who was represented by his aide, Mr. Yau Dass, during the presentation of admission letters to the students in the Dass LGA, noted that the shortage has resulted in inadequate healthcare services, affecting the well-being of his constituents.

Leko said the sponsorship included full scholarships for 82 students to study various health-related disciplines worth N5,186,000 to the shortage of health workers.

According to him, the gesture is part of his efforts to support the educational pursuits of youths in his constituency, emphasising that education is key to unlocking the potential of young people.

While reiterating his commitment to encouraging educational development in his constituency, Leko also revealed that he had discussed with Governor Bala Mohammed to employ the students after their studies, ensuring they have automatic employment upon graduation.

This, he said, would not only address the shortage of health workers but also provide job opportunities for the youth in the constituency.

Earlier, Mr. Anas Bununu, legislative Aide to Leko, highlighted the various projects embarked upon by the representative to empower constituents, including providing farm inputs, water facilities, electricity, health services, and employment.

He noted that Leko’s commitment to the well-being of his constituents is unwavering and that the sponsorship of the students is another testament to his dedication.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has inaugurated a high-powered negotiation team as a decisive move to address the ongoing strike unions at the Gombe State University (GSU) which has disrupted academic activities for weeks.

The strike embarked on by the university’s unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), has left government, students and parents concerned about the prolonged halt in academic activities.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony at the Government House, Gombe, Monday, Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed deep concern over the impact of the strike on students and the state’s education sector.

He emphasized the need for a swift resolution, stating: “Education is a priority for this administration, and we will do everything within our powers to ensure that the students return to class. This negotiation team has my full support to explore all avenues in resolving the pressing issues.

“While our investment in education extends beyond the university to include secondary and basic levels, we recognize the critical importance of supporting the university for its smooth operation. Since 2019, we have consistently increased the monthly subvention, ensuring the university receives over 200 million naira each month.”

He explained that the issue of Earned Academic Allowances was an inherited challenge from the past administration, noting that in 2019, when he assumed leadership of the state, the university owed over 1.025 billion naira in allowances while emphasizing his efforts to address the backlog, citing his recent approval of over 265 million naira in benefits for the university staff.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya also emphasized that his administration’s commitment to education was a key factor in his decision to reject a proposal by some members of Gombe State University to raise students’ registration fees as done by other states.

He added that being aware of the challenging economic conditions and the need to make university education accessible to the people of Gombe made him to reject the proposal while noting that other universities in the country charge three times the current fees at GSU.

The governor used the opportunity to explain that the endowment fund, which he had planned to launch prior to the strike, was designed to address some of the unions’ concerns, noting that several prominent philanthropists across the country have pledged contributions to support the fund to complement the government’s efforts to enhance the university’s growth.

He appealed to the unions to recognize the economic challenges at hand, assuring them of the government’s commitment to improving the conditions of both the university and its staff.

In his remarks, the deputy governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, who is the chairman of the negotiation team, assured all stakeholders of commitment to finding a lasting solution to the industrial action.

He called for cooperation from the unions, saying, “This administration understands the importance of your demands, and we are prepared to engage in fruitful negotiations that will benefit both the staff and the university.

“Our goal is not only to resolve the immediate issues but also to establish a framework for long-term stability at GSU. We appeal to the unions to come to the table with an open mind so that we can reach an agreement that prioritizes the interests of our dear state.”

Members of the Manassah Jatau- led committee include the Secretary to the State Government who will serve as Secretary; Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioners of Higher Education, Local Government and Community Development, Finance & Economic Development, of Education, Budget & Economic Planning, as well as Executive Chairperson, Gombe State Internal Revenue Services.

Others include the State Auditor-General, Accountant-General of the State, Permanent Secretary, Bureau for Public Service Reforms, Chairman, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Gombe State, Deputy Chairman, ALGON and Permanent Secretary, Special Services & Political Affairs.

Stakeholders in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector have called for the adoption of UNICEF Sanitation Pool Fund Initiative in Bauchi by other states to scale up the construction of improved toilets by households to check open defecation in Nigeria.

The stakeholders made the call during a one-day workshop organised by WaterAid Nigeria to validate and disseminate Bauchi State WASH situational assessment report held in Bauchi with MDA representatives, CSOs, donors and the media in attendance.

According to the report, the N20 million released to the Bauchi State Government by UNICEF has grown to about N80 million as the fund was lent to toilet business operators who subsequently distributed it to households for the construction of improved toilets. The stakeholders, who commended the Bauchi State government for judicious management of the fund, called for the initiative to be replicated in other states of the federation to achieve open defecation free society.

While presenting the report to stakeholders yesterday, the head of advocacy, policy and communication of WaterAid Nigeria, Mr. Kolawole Banwo, highlighted findings of the report to include access to basic sanitation in Bauchi State which stands at 60 percent, far above the national average of 46 percent and regional average of 51 percent.

“Asides from this, the presence of hand-washing facilities with soap in premises is about 19 percent above the regional and national average of 12 percent and 17 percent respectively,” he added.

With respect to gaps contained in the report, Banwo identified lack of permanent leadership in some of the agencies like the Bauchi State small towns water and sanitary agency BASTOWA, Bauchi State water services and regulatory commission and the state rural water supply agency RUWASA, as creating a gap and therefore called on government to appoint substantive head for this institutions to avert management crisis.

The one-day stakeholders’ workshop advised the state government to revitalise the role of the high level sanitation champions for the state as the policy document does not address the key pillars of sanitation governance.

Earlier, the spokesman of the Ministry of Water Resources, who also doubles as the Permanent Secretary, Mustapha Ahmed Samaila, commended WaterAid for undertaking the project and pledged Bauchi State Government’s readiness to adopt key recommendations contained in the report to move the WASH sector forward.

Gombe State Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Yahaya, has flagged off the 2024 annual vaccination campaign against Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) in cattle, Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in sheep and goats, and anthrax in livestock across the state.

The event held yesterday in the Tumfure-Bashar area of Akko Local Government Area, marked the fourth time the current state government has carried out this initiative aimed at controlling animal diseases to enhance public health in the state.

Speaking at the ceremony yesterday, Governor Yahaya restated the importance of the vaccination exercise in protecting livestock from preventable diseases that have historically ravaged the agriculture sector, threatening the livelihood of farmers and pastoralists.

He said: “The primary goal of this annual vaccination campaign is to control the spread of these diseases, which have long hindered the growth of the livestock industry in our
state.

Diseases like CBPP and PPR cause severe economic losses due to high mortality rates among livestock, while anthrax presents a grave risk to human health as it is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans.”

He emphasised the critical role livestock plays in the state economy, noting that Gombe State is home to thousands of herders and livestock farmers whose contributions to food security and income generation are vital to the state socio-economic development.

Yahaya said: “I would like to reiterate that the livestock sub-sector holds immense potential for growth. To unlock this potential, Gombe State has embraced the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP) and the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project. These initiatives are designed to enhance livestock production. Furthermore, under the Gombe State Development Plan 2021-2030, we have outlined interventions in the agriculture sector to ensure self-sufficiency, sustainable food security, and to support animal husbandry and livestock products, thereby creating wealth and job opportunities for our people.”

He further reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing veterinary services through the provision of necessary resources, including vaccines, personnel, and transportation, to ensure the success of the vaccination campaign. He called on herders and livestock farmers to take full advantage of the programme to present their animals for vaccination.

Governor Yahaya further announced plans to execute new projects that would transform the agricultural landscape of the state across all segments of the agri-business value chain.

He outlined projects such as the construction of a standard modern abattoir in the state; establishment of an international cattle market; construction and rehabilitation of slaughterhouses and veterinary clinics across the LGAs; reactivation of the Poultry Production Unit in Gombe State aimed at boosting poultry production and creating employment for our youths as well as re-demarcation of seven grazing reserves and 37 international and national cattle routes, along with the establishment of control posts at the borders to regulate livestock movement in and out of the state.

On the farmers-herders clash, the governor stated that as parts broader efforts to address the long-standing problem, he reconstituted the Farmers/Herders Prevention and Settlement of Disputes Committee, an initiative he launched at the beginning of his administration in 2019 aimed at finding lasting solutions to the clashes between farmers and herders.

He further stated that the government has also established a task force with the mandate on reclaiming encroached game reserves, grazing reserves, forest reserves, and cattle corridors, warning that whoever is found in this illegal act of encroachment will be made to face stringent punishment in accordance with the provisions of the law.

Speaking earlier, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, Dr. Barnabas Malle, explained that the administration of Governor Yahaya in collaboration with the Livestock Productivity Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has made available sufficient vaccine doses to cover an estimated population of 3.6 million livestock in the state.

The commissioner described the consistent vaccination exercise conducted by the present administration for the past five years as a departure from previous experiences to a new one that facilitates production of healthy animals and assists in the control of animal diseases and diseases of public health importance which can be transmitted from animals to humans.

Also speaking, the state Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Ibrahim Bomoi, noted that the vaccination of animals such as cows, sheep and goats would lead to an economic surge in animal production and processing, commending the government for viewing the consistent vaccination of livestock in the state from the prism of strategic leadership.
