Oshogwe Anthonia Emike: Building Toniagold2020 With Heart, Not Hype
Behind the 4 million views and the laugh-out-loud skits is a girl from Lagos who never set out to be famous. She just wanted to be real.
Oshogwe Anthonia Emike, or Toniagold2020 as the internet knows her, grew up watching Lagos breathe – its noise, its people, its stories. She studied Marketing in Kwara, but it was life that taught her how to speak to the heart.
Somewhere between a funny video and a quiet DM, her 鈥渟ide hustle鈥 became a sanctuary for strangers. For the girl who felt alone. For the person who said her content got them through their darkest days.
In this interview with MARY NNAH, Anthonia admits the pressure is heavy. Some days she鈥檚 burnt out. Some videos don鈥檛 land. But she keeps showing up because, to her, consistency isn鈥檛 perfection. It鈥檚 showing up as yourself. When the camera is off, she鈥檚 quiet, family-oriented, and deeply grounded by the humility her upbringing gave her. And her biggest hope? That Toniagold2020 will be remembered not for the numbers, but for the smiles, the comfort, and the proof that ordinary people can do extraordinary things with honesty
You grew up in Lagos and studied Marketing at Kwara State Polytechnic. How did those two experiences shape the way you create content today?
Growing up in Lagos exposed me to diverse people, cultures, and everyday experiences that inspire much of my content. Lagos is vibrant and full of stories. Studying Marketing at Kwara State Polytechnic helped me understand audience behavior, branding, and communication. Combining both experiences has helped me create content that connects with people while also building a recognizable personal brand.
At what point did you realize Toniagold2020 was no longer just a side hustle, but a real career with 4M+ people watching?
I realized it had become a real career when I started seeing consistent growth, brand opportunities, and messages from people whose lives were positively impacted by my content. Reaching millions of followers made me understand that this was bigger than just posting videos for fun鈥攊t had become a platform and a responsibility.
Your content is known for being relatable. Where do your best ideas come from -daily life, comments, or random moments?
Most of my ideas come from everyday life. Sometimes it鈥檚 a conversation, an experience, or even something funny that happens around me. I also pay close attention to comments because my audience often inspires new content ideas. The best content usually comes from moments people can genuinely relate to.
With 4M followers, the pressure to stay consistent is huge. How do you create on days when you feel burnt out or uninspired?
I remind myself that consistency doesn鈥檛 mean perfection. On difficult days, I take a step back, rest when necessary, and focus on creating something simple but authentic. I鈥檝e learned that taking care of my mental well-being helps me come back stronger and more creative.
What鈥檚 one video you posted that flopped, and what did it teach you about your audience?
I鈥檝e had videos I believed would perform well, but didn鈥檛 get the response I expected. Those moments taught me that success isn鈥檛 always predictable and that understanding my audience requires constant learning. It also reminded me to stay true to myself rather than chase trends that don鈥檛 align with my style.
You say you鈥檙e committed to inspiring and entertaining. What kind of impact do you hope you鈥檙e having on young people who follow you?
I hope I鈥檓 showing young people that it鈥檚 possible to chase their dreams regardless of where they come from. I want them to see that consistency, hard work, and authenticity can open doors. If my content can make someone smile, feel encouraged, or believe in themselves, then I鈥檝e made a positive impact.
What鈥檚 the most meaningful DM or comment you鈥檝e ever received that reminded you why you started?
One of the most meaningful messages I received was from someone who said my videos helped them through a difficult period in their life. Knowing that something I created brought comfort and happiness to someone reminded me that content creation is about more than numbers – it鈥檚 about people.
When the camera is off, who is Anthonia? What are 3 things your followers might not know about you?
When the camera is off, I鈥檓 a simple, family-oriented person, at the same time a loner. Three things my followers might not know about me: 1. I鈥檓 naturally quieter than I appear in my videos. 2. I enjoy learning new things and developing myself outside social media. 3. I value meaningful relationships and genuine connections more than popularity.
What value from your upbringing do you refuse to compromise on, even as your influence grows?
Humility. No matter how far I go, I never want to lose the values of respect, gratitude, and kindness that I was raised with. I believe staying grounded is one of the keys to lasting success.
The digital space moves fast. Beyond the views and followers, what legacy do you want Toniagold2020 to leave?
I want Toniagold2020 to be remembered as a brand that inspired people, brought joy to millions, and showed that authenticity still matters. Beyond the numbers, I want my legacy to be proof that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things through dedication, creativity, and consistency.
