TFC 2026 Pushes Energy Justice Bill, Unveils Clean Cooking Drive in Abuja

Calls for a fair and inclusive energy transition dominated discussions at the The Future Conference (TFC) 2026, where stakeholders urged the Federal Government to fast-track an Energy Justice Bill while unveiling a Clean Cooking Initiative targeted at vulnerable households across Nigeria.

Held at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the conference convened over 500 participants drawn from government institutions, development finance bodies, private sector organisations, academia, civil society, and youth groups. The theme of the event was 鈥淕reen Transitions: The Future of Energy and Climate Change.鈥

The programme was organised by CoreSphere Nigeria Limited, with organisers stressing the need to move Nigeria鈥檚 climate agenda from policy conversations to measurable implementation.

Convener and Chief Executive Officer of CoreSphere Nigeria Limited, Ambassador Sonia Elohor Somuvie, said young Nigerians must go beyond social media advocacy and actively engage with governance and policymaking processes.

鈥淟asting change requires Nigerians to engage directly with policy processes and political institutions,鈥 she said, noting that awareness alone is insufficient without institutional participation.

A major outcome of the conference was a collective resolution advocating for a Bill on Just Inclusion in Nigeria鈥檚 Energy Transition Plan, aimed at embedding equity for women, youth, and vulnerable communities within the country鈥檚 energy reforms. CoreSphere disclosed plans to develop the draft legislation in collaboration with the Abuja Youth Parliament.

Chairman of the conference, Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, called for solutions that deliver tangible impact at community level, while keynote remarks delivered on behalf of Hon. Terseer Ugbor urged stakeholders to prioritise implementation over policy rhetoric.

Panel sessions featured representatives from key institutions including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Energy Commission of Nigeria, the Rural Electrification Agency, the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria, as well as industry and academic stakeholders.

Discussions centred on regulatory reforms, renewable energy financing, off-grid electrification, clean technology investments, and expanding opportunities for youth and women in the energy sector.

The conference also marked the launch of the Clean Cooking Initiative, championed by Senator Nwoko and presented by Mr. Chukwuebuka Anyaduba. The initiative seeks to distribute 1,000 cooking gas cylinders to vulnerable households as part of efforts to reduce reliance on firewood and other polluting fuels.

Organisers said 鈧5 million was raised at the event to kick-start the first phase of implementation, with distribution expected to commence later this year.

Delegates unanimously agreed that Nigeria鈥檚 energy transition will depend on a combination of inclusive legislation, sustained financing, and coordinated action across public and private sector actors.

With resolutions expected to be developed into legislative proposals and community projects, organisers said TFC 2026 has further positioned itself as a platform linking policy dialogue with practical climate action.
