Darkness in the three geopolitical regions in the Northern Nigeria was caused by the insurgents operating in those regions, many reasons could be attributed to the insurgency namely:
The tactical support given to the insurgents during Goodluck Jonathan administration for the presidential power to return to the North.
Another factor is the discontinuation of the Alimajiri education initiated by Goodluck but stopped by a Northern president and minister of education this is unfortunate for people to deliberately worked against the interest of the regions.
Another causes of the problem in Northern Nigeria is refusal to adopt birth control because of religious beliefs. An average northerner who is a man must get the full compliment of wives according to their religious belief notwithstanding his economic status. This is very sensitive issue for a southerner to discuss. The current Emir of Kano had severally spoke against it he wad punished for it by detroning him but The All Mighty Allah restored the throne of his fore bearers for him because he did nothing wrong. He advised that instead of building new mosques schools should be built less than ten years he gave the advice the issue of out of school children had became a serious problem for the North because the children are being recruited by the insurgents to cause social, economic problems for the region.
Another factor is that the president Buhari was also tactically supporting the insurgents because they were his people's. UAE gave the list of sponsorer of insurgency to Buahri nothing happened to the people on the list.
Porous nature of the Northern Nigeria with neighbouring countries also contributed to the insurgency because it was difficult to recognise people of Northern Nigeria and their neighbours from Benin Republic, Niger and Chad.
Poverty in the North was also part of the causes of the insurgency. Little fund from the sponsors of the insurgency could make a family to give their children for recruit as a insurgent.

Using derivation to share VAT among states would be unfair to the Northern states because that method should had been done since the introduction of the tax by IBB moreso we have a southerner now as the president of Nigeria who is on first term that is renewable at the expiratory of the term. The nation is divided among regional divides and 2023 presidential election also widen the divides because the three regions of country at independent presented presidential candidates the diffrence between the winner and the first runner-up was less than two million votes and this was one of reasons first and second runner-up went to courts for adjudication
