In 1993, Nigeria won the U-17 World Cup.
In 1994, Nigeria won Afcon.
Both feats were achieved during the regime of Sani Abacha.
The point: governmental incompetence and sporting triumph are not a perfect match.
Corrupt and incompetent governments are best judged by their own lack of achievement.
And that is more than enough.

Logical, Concise and Apt, at once.

For example, nigeria lifted the U-17 world championship in August 1985 shortly before the evil incarnate, Ibrahim Babangida came to power. But for the whole of the 8 years the evil genius was there ill-luck followed nigeria. Immediately he left office in August 1993, nigeria won another U-17 same August. Now that the criminal heroin trafficker & corruption incarnate is there, ill-luck has crept in once more!

Simply put,
Those at that constructed this contraption in their own image, have absolutely no use for sports ; or any thing overly taxing, to the body, or mind. Their ethos is : ruling, mulki.
Ask a typical northerner his definition of success, and he will say ‘ getting sufficient resources to join the class of sarakuna, by marriage or coronation’. A southerner would want to become an ide, or babanla, recognised for his utility to his community. For the one, feudalism, for the other, enablement.
Is it wonder that your list of past greats has hardly a Mustapha, or a Babagana?
Priorities, my dear man, priorities..

Another consolation price.

It is reminiscent of how despite the fact that Nigeria did not qualify for the 2022 world cup, we saw the President of Nigeria Football Federation, Pinnick, galivanting with FIFA President, Infantino, in Qatar. He even bragged about how he and his wife were entertained, during the last world cup in Qatar, when he was interviewed by Arise news earlier this month or late last month

The failure of Nigeria to win a single medal in the 2024 Olympics is a reflection on our society at large. We need to change how we go about our business. We need to spend our resources in a way that we see the dividends of the money we spend. We need to invest in assets and not liabilities

The FGN's students' loan program is a good place to start. Back in the day — about 60 to 70 years ago — when communities all over Nigeria had finite resources for development, they trained only the best students in courses, such as medicine, that will yield immediate dividends to their communities

The FGN's current students' loan program should be targeted at students who are enrolled in courses that have an immediate application to our society. Including, medicine, dentistry, architecture, carpentry, plumbing, etc

After all Britain won only one gold medal in athletics. Then we need psychologists for our athletes. After running and losing they always look dejected, as others smile and run around. Maybe that’s how things should be really, if you lost. When Lyle Noah lost to Tebogo, he claimed it was due to COVID 19 infection. For the first time, I saw an American looking like our Nigerian athletes. Yet, he got a bronze. That’s gold right there, if you were a Nigerian.

That is why it is unlikely for an American, for an example, to opt to compete for Russia or a North Korean competing for South Korea. However, it is a different kettle of fish entirely in Nigeria where athletes have totally lost faith in their country. And you do not blame them because there is absolutely nothing to inspire. Stories out of this country can scare even the most patriotic.

Times were when the likes of Mary Onyali, Beatrice Utondu, Falilat Ogunkoya, Chidi Imo, Ezinwa brothers, Innocent Egbunike, Olapade Adenike, Henry Emike, Peter Konyegwachi, et al. made Nigeria proud in both the world's meets and the olympics. But these were the glory days when the nation still has value for its human resources. Ironically, these were the days of the military dictatorship. Forgotten the Atlanta 1996 games Mother Of All Medals, the men's football event gold medal? Some nostalgia you would say. Why not?

It is a shame that those who are at the helm of affairs in this country do not realize the importance of sports in the unity and socio-cultural integration and development of this country. Whoever that has witnessed the Mobil Meets at National Stadium at Surulere will attest to this fact. The stadium was always jam-packed during the events. This was when Chief Dan Ngerem was the NSC chairman.

Will this country ever reenact those glory days? Unfortunately, I doubt if anyone can say for sure given that presently ominous foreboding pervades the entire socio-political space. Los Angeles 1984 was good for Nigeria where Peter Konyegwachi won silver in the Welter Weight? boxing event. Will there be an encore in 2028?
